Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: May 28, 1955 marked the CBS radio broadcast of Gunsmoke, episode.
- 0:07Speaker 2: 163, Cow Doctor.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Jerry Pitcher arrives in Dodge seeking Doc Adams. Because Jerry's father, Ben,
- 0:14Speaker 1: is known to despise doctors, Marshal Matt Dillon rides with
- 0:18Speaker 1: Doc to the remote Pitcher farm, where the urgent summons
- 0:22Speaker 1: has consequences for both the household and Dodge. William Conrad
- 0:27Speaker 1: leads the cast as Matt Dillon, with Howard McNear as
- 0:30Speaker 1: Doc Adams, Parley Bear as Chester, and Georgia Ellis as Kitty.
- 0:36Speaker 1: John Meston wrote the script, and Norman MacDonald directed and produced. Now,
- 0:42Speaker 1: back to the golden age of radio.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Around Dodge City and in the Territory on West, there's
- 0:59Speaker 3: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:02Speaker 3: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:05Speaker 3: gun smoke. Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The transcribed story of
- 1:29Speaker 3: the violence that moved west with young America. And the
- 1:32Speaker 3: story of a man who moved with it.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first
- 1:39Speaker 2: man they look for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:43Speaker 2: It's a chancy job. And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:47Speaker 2: And a little lonely.
- 1:59Speaker 4: THE END.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Hey, Mr. Dillon, look who I got with me.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Oh, hello, Kitty. Come on in.
- 2:22Speaker 6: I ran into Chester on the street, Matt. He insisted
- 2:26Speaker 6: I come along with him.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Well, I'm glad he did.
- 2:30Speaker 5: I mailed him letters and things at the depot, Mr.
- 2:32Speaker 7: Dillon.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Oh, good, good, Chester.
- 2:35Speaker 5: I took that circular over to Mr.
- 2:36Speaker 8: Hightower.
- 2:37Speaker 5: He'll print some up in a couple of days.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Oh, good.
- 2:42Speaker 5: That's all you wanted me to do, ain't it?
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's all.
- 2:46Speaker 5: Ain't nothing else you need. I mean, not right now.
- 2:49Speaker 2: No, no, nothing else.
- 2:54Speaker 5: Everything's pretty well took care of, ain't it?
- 2:56Speaker 2: Everything's fine, fine, Chester, yeah. Except for that buzzin' in
- 3:02Speaker 2: your head.
- 3:03Speaker 5: My head?
- 3:05Speaker 2: Come on, what is it, Chester? Just speak it right out.
- 3:09Speaker 5: Well, thing is, I run into this friend of mine
- 3:11Speaker 5: a few minutes ago. I ain't seen him in years.
- 3:13Speaker 5: I knowed him a long time ago, way back in
- 3:15Speaker 5: the Army. You know how it is.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Well, go on.
- 3:20Speaker 5: Well, see, he's stationed out at Fort Dodge.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Right here.
- 3:24Speaker 9: Only five miles away.
- 3:25Speaker 5: My, just imagine that.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Chester, I got an idea. Yes, sir? Look, why don't
- 3:34Speaker 2: you ride out and see your friend, huh? Now, you
- 3:37Speaker 2: can stay a couple of days if you want. There's
- 3:39Speaker 2: nothing for you to do around here.
- 3:41Speaker 5: Well, you think that'd be a good idea?
- 3:44Speaker 2: Well, it's my idea, isn't it?
- 3:46Speaker 8: Yes, it sure is.
- 3:47Speaker 5: Well, I'd better get going then. No use wasting time,
- 3:49Speaker 5: is it?
- 3:50Speaker 10: Bye, Chester.
- 3:51Speaker 9: Bye, Miss Kitty. I'll be back in a day or two, Mr.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Jones. Yeah, well, you have a good time, Chester. And
- 3:56Speaker 2: leave the door open. It's awful hot in here.
- 3:58Speaker 8: Yes, sir, I will. Goodbye.
- 4:03Speaker 2: So that's why he wanted you here, huh?
- 4:05Speaker 6: Oh, I guess he thought it might help. But he
- 4:07Speaker 6: forgot to mention something.
- 4:08Speaker 2: No? What's that?
- 4:10Speaker 10: This dear old friend.
- 4:11Speaker 6: Of his has got a pretty interesting job in the Army.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Yeah, is that so?
- 4:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 4:15Speaker 2: He's a mess sergeant. A mess sergeant?
- 4:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Well, after a couple of days of that, I'll have
- 4:20Speaker 2: to go after Chester with a wagon.
- 4:22Speaker 10: You may never see him again.
- 4:24Speaker 9: Marshal Dillon?
- 4:26Speaker 2: Oh, come on in, son.
- 4:28Speaker 9: I'm looking for Doc.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Well, his office is right next door.
- 4:31Speaker 9: I've been there. I've been everywhere.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Oh, you need him bad?
- 4:35Speaker 9: I was sent to fetch him.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Somebody sick?
- 4:38Speaker 9: My pa told me to bring him out to our place.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Well, is it your pa who's sick?
- 4:42Speaker 9: He wants the doc bad, Marshal.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Who is your pa, son?
- 4:45Speaker 9: Ben Pitcher.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Are you Ben Pitcher's boy?
- 4:49Speaker 9: My name's Jerry.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Oh, Jerry, your pa must be pretty sick if he's
- 4:53Speaker 2: sent for doc.
- 4:54Speaker 9: I know. He hates doctors. Don't believe in them. But
- 4:57Speaker 9: he wants doc to come, Marshal. He told me I
- 4:59Speaker 9: had to find him. I've looked everywhere.
- 5:01Speaker 6: Oh, there's a back room at the Dodge house, Jerry.
- 5:04Speaker 10: Doc sometimes plays a little poker in there.
- 5:07Speaker 9: Thank you, lady. I'll go look.
- 5:09Speaker 2: If you don't find him there, come back and I'll
- 5:11Speaker 2: help you, Jerry.
- 5:12Speaker 9: Thanks, Marshal.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Oh, and Jerry.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Yes, sir.
- 5:15Speaker 2: If you do find him, be sure and tell him
- 5:16Speaker 2: that I want to see him before he leaves.
- 5:19Speaker 9: I'll tell him, Marshal.
- 5:22Speaker 2: That's a surprise.
- 5:24Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 5:25Speaker 10: I've heard about Ben Pritchard. How he hates doctors.
- 5:29Speaker 2: His wife's just as bad.
- 5:31Speaker 6: I remember he got cut up in a knife fight
- 5:32Speaker 6: here in town sometime back and then threatened to kill
- 5:35Speaker 6: Doc if he got anywhere near him.
- 5:36Speaker 2: He almost bled to death as a result. You know,
- 5:40Speaker 2: there's something wrong about this, Kitty. I think I'll ride
- 5:45Speaker 2: out there with Doc. Good.
- 5:47Speaker 10: I'd sure hate to see anything happen to Doc.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Yeah, so would everybody. Except Pitcher.
- 6:03Speaker 4: How do you like riding in a buggy, Matt?
- 6:25Speaker 2: Make you feel important? Yeah, it sure does, doctor. But
- 6:28Speaker 2: the way you drive, I'd feel a lot safer on
- 6:31Speaker 2: a horse.
- 6:32Speaker 8: You'll get used to it.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Well, I hope not.
- 6:47Speaker 8: And I don't see anybody around.
- 6:48Speaker 2: You expect a sick man to be waiting on the
- 6:50Speaker 2: porch for you?
- 6:51Speaker 10: Well, I'd expect most anything of Ben Pitcher.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Well, a man can change, Doc.
- 6:57Speaker 8: Oh, change. Not him. Not Pitcher.
- 7:00Speaker 2: I will soon find out.
- 7:21Speaker 9: What are you doing here, Marshal?
- 7:23Speaker 2: I came along to keep Doc company, Mrs.
- 7:25Speaker 7: Fitcher.
- 7:26Speaker 6: Oh.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Ma'am?
- 7:28Speaker 8: Where's the boy?
- 7:30Speaker 2: Jerry said to tell you he'd be along directly.
- 7:32Speaker 10: Why didn't he come with you?
- 7:33Speaker 2: He said that you gave him a list of stuff
- 7:35Speaker 2: to buy while he was in town.
- 7:37Speaker 7: Oh.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Forgot.
- 7:39Speaker 8: We're wasting time. Where's Ben, Mrs. Fitcher?
- 7:42Speaker 9: He's out back.
- 7:43Speaker 7: He's out.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Out back?
- 7:45Speaker 8: In the barn.
- 7:46Speaker 6: In the barn.
- 7:49Speaker 8: What's he doing in the barn?
- 7:50Speaker 10: You ask him, Doc.
- 7:51Speaker 9: I don't interfere in my husband's way of doing things.
- 7:54Speaker 8: Is he sick or isn't he?
- 7:56Speaker 9: He's in the barn. You go see him. I got
- 7:59Speaker 9: work to do.
- 8:03Speaker 8: That woman could drive me crazy, man.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Maybe that's what happened to Pitcher, Doc.
- 8:10Speaker 8: Between the two of them, it's a wonder the boys
- 8:12Speaker 8: made out at all.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Yeah, Jerry seems okay.
- 8:16Speaker 8: If they have their way, they'll make a spook out
- 8:18Speaker 8: of them, yeah.
- 8:19Speaker 2: You know, you're not very charitable, Doc.
- 8:21Speaker 8: Oh, charitable. You don't fool me, Madeline. You don't like
- 8:24Speaker 8: them any better than I do.
- 8:25Speaker 2: I always try to look for the good side in people, Doc.
- 8:28Speaker 8: Oh, it's your hogwash. Well, pretty good barn he's got here.
- 8:35Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Look, I'll go in first.
- 8:38Speaker 6: What's that?
- 8:39Speaker 2: You follow me. Pitcher. Hey, Pitcher.
- 8:54Speaker 7: I'm back here.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Come on, Doc.
- 8:58Speaker 9: Over here in this stall.
- 9:05Speaker 7: I thought it was Doc.
- 9:06Speaker 2: He's here, Pitcher.
- 9:09Speaker 8: What are you doing in there with that cow?
- 9:12Speaker 7: I thought you were sick. It ain't me that's sick.
- 9:16Speaker 9: Well, who is sick?
- 9:18Speaker 8: My cow.
- 9:19Speaker 2: What?
- 9:20Speaker 7: The cow's got the colic or something. I've done everything
- 9:24Speaker 7: I can for her.
- 9:26Speaker 9: You mean you had me come all this way, way
- 9:30Speaker 9: out here, to Dr.
- 9:31Speaker 7: Cow? I wouldn't let your doctor know a human.
- 9:34Speaker 8: I thought there was something wrong about all this.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Cows, cows, different.
- 9:39Speaker 11: I don't mind so much you working on a cow.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Oh, you don't.
- 9:42Speaker 7: Cows are different.
- 9:44Speaker 11: Humans can get well by themselves, but cows is helpless and.
- 9:48Speaker 7: They're kind of pitiful. Listen to her. She's hurting bad, Doc.
- 9:54Speaker 3: I ought to kick you right in the head, Ben Pritchard.
- 9:57Speaker 11: Don't take it out on me that you, Doc, don't
- 10:00Speaker 11: know nothing. If you're so smart, do something for my cow.
- 10:06Speaker 11: Before she dies, Doc.
- 10:09Speaker 2: All right. I'll look at her.
- 10:11Speaker 9: But you sure don't deserve it, Ben.
- 10:13Speaker 7: You ain't doing it for me.
- 10:14Speaker 2: You bet I'm not.
- 10:15Speaker 9: Now get out of the way and let me in there.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Take your time, Doc. I'm in no hurry.
- 10:38Speaker 7: What's he doing in there all this time, Marshal?
- 10:42Speaker 2: Leave him be, Ben. He'll let us know if he
- 10:43Speaker 2: wants any help. How's my cow, Doc?
- 10:48Speaker 7: Oh.
- 10:49Speaker 2: I guess he's through.
- 10:51Speaker 9: Here's your knife, Ben.
- 10:53Speaker 8: Did you stick her with it?
- 10:54Speaker 1: I did.
- 10:55Speaker 8: She's going to feel a lot better. You can give
- 10:56Speaker 8: her all the water she wants, but don't let her
- 10:58Speaker 8: eat anything for a day or two. Is she going
- 11:00Speaker 8: to live? I don't know.
- 11:01Speaker 7: If she dies, I ain't going to pay you.
- 11:04Speaker 8: I wouldn't take any money from you anyway.
- 11:06Speaker 7: What's wrong with my money?
- 11:07Speaker 8: It's not your money.
- 11:10Speaker 2: It's you.
- 11:11Speaker 7: Who do you mean?
- 11:11Speaker 9: Hey, Pa, I'm back. I got all the stuff Ma wanted.
- 11:15Speaker 7: You'd better, Rose.
- 11:16Speaker 9: Oh, Doc, Marshal.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Jerry.
- 11:18Speaker 9: Say, Doc, you missed all the excitement.
- 11:20Speaker 8: Oh, is that so?
- 11:21Speaker 9: Yeah, it happened just after you left. Everybody was running
- 11:23Speaker 9: around looking for you.
- 11:24Speaker 2: What happened, Jerry?
- 11:25Speaker 9: Old Mrs. Hill, she was walking down the street, and
- 11:28Speaker 9: I guess the sun was too much for her or something. Anyway,
- 11:31Speaker 9: she fainted and she fell against the window right there
- 11:33Speaker 9: at the general store. And it cut her arm real bad.
- 11:37Speaker 9: Nobody could get it to stop bleeding.
- 11:38Speaker 8: They couldn't.
- 11:39Speaker 9: That's why they were looking for you, Doc. I told
- 11:41Speaker 9: them you'd come out here, but they wouldn't believe me.
- 11:43Speaker 9: What happened to Mrs.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Hill, Jerry?
- 11:45Speaker 9: She died, Doc.
- 11:47Speaker 7: Huh?
- 11:47Speaker 9: Just before I left.
- 11:50Speaker 8: She died? Did you hear that picture? A woman died.
- 11:58Speaker 7: What?
- 11:59Speaker 2: If I'd been there, I could have saved her, but.
- 12:02Speaker 8: But she died.
- 12:02Speaker 7: Don't talk at me.
- 12:04Speaker 3: She died because of you and your rotten, twisted wings.
- 12:07Speaker 7: Ah, none of you doctors is any good. You couldn't
- 12:10Speaker 7: have done nothing.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Oh, no good.
- 12:11Speaker 8: Well, I'll show you.
- 12:13Speaker 2: No, wait a minute, Doc.
- 12:14Speaker 4: Here now.
- 12:15Speaker 2: I'll show you. Nobody hits me.
- 12:17Speaker 9: But Pa's got a knife.
- 12:18Speaker 2: No, picture, picture. Oh, he cut him.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Picture.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Here, Doc.
- 12:23Speaker 7: Here.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I got you.
- 12:30Speaker 8: He ripped me with a knife, Matt.
- 12:34Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 12:35Speaker 2: You hurt bad?
- 12:36Speaker 8: Well, it's bleeding. See that? He helped me in the house.
- 12:40Speaker 8: We can look at it there.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Yeah, sure, Doc.
- 12:45Speaker 9: What about Paul?
- 12:47Speaker 2: You let me know when he comes to. I'll come
- 12:50Speaker 2: back and knock him out again. Well, it's pretty clean now, Doc.
- 13:11Speaker 8: Oh, well. Oh, gee, that looks better.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's still bleeding.
- 13:19Speaker 9: I don't care for that mess you're making on that bed, Marshal.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Go get me another pan of hot water.
- 13:25Speaker 9: You're ordering me around my own house?
- 13:27Speaker 2: You do it. Matt.
- 13:28Speaker 5: All right.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Yeah, Doc?
- 13:34Speaker 8: I'm not sure, but I.
- 13:37Speaker 8: I don't think that knife ruptured anything.
- 13:40Speaker 2: No, that's good.
- 13:41Speaker 8: But a couple of those veins have to be tied off,
- 13:45Speaker 8: and then it's got to be sewed up, you see. Oh?
- 13:50Speaker 8: Needles and thread in my bag. Now, I'd do it myself,
- 13:53Speaker 8: but I can't reach it easy enough.
- 13:58Speaker 2: You mean you want me to do it?
- 13:59Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:00Speaker 8: I'll tell you how I'll match you.
- 14:02Speaker 2: What? You think I can't?
- 14:04Speaker 8: Oh, it's easy. Especially for a gunfighter.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I was thinking.
- 14:15Speaker 8: I can bleed to death this way.
- 14:20Speaker 2: I won't have any trouble, Doc. Here, you hold the
- 14:23Speaker 2: cloth on it, huh?
- 14:24Speaker 4: I got it.
- 14:25Speaker 2: I'll go get your bag.
- 14:29Speaker 7: Marshal.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Get out of here, pitcher.
- 14:33Speaker 7: You hit me awful hard.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Did I?
- 14:36Speaker 7: He jumped me first. You saw him. I was protecting myself.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Pitcher, if Doc doesn't come out of this all right,
- 14:42Speaker 2: I'm going to quit being a marshal and I'm going
- 14:44Speaker 2: to come after you as a plain man looking for revenge.
- 14:47Speaker 7: You're threatening me.
- 14:48Speaker 2: It's wrong of me, but I'm going to kill you, Pitcher.
- 14:51Speaker 4: No, no.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Get out of here. And stay out of this house.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Go on.
- 14:58Speaker 9: I'm going.
- 15:00Speaker 7: I'm going.
- 15:02Speaker 4: I'm going.
- 15:07Speaker 2: It wasn't easy, and I felt like I had fence
- 15:10Speaker 2: posts for fingers. But I finally got Doc sewed up.
- 15:15Speaker 2: He'd lost an awful lot of blood, and he passed
- 15:18Speaker 2: out before I finished. So all I could do was
- 15:21Speaker 2: sit there and watch him. And maybe that was the
- 15:25Speaker 2: hardest part. In the morning, however, he seemed better. And
- 15:32Speaker 2: he insisted that I take him in a Dodge. So
- 15:35Speaker 2: I made him a bed in Pitcher's wagon and had
- 15:37Speaker 2: Jerry drive the buggy alongside. He was in bad shape
- 15:42Speaker 2: by the time we reached town, but I got him
- 15:44Speaker 2: into his own bed and then sent for Kitty to
- 15:46Speaker 2: help me out. I don't know what I'd have done
- 15:49Speaker 2: without her for that next week.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Mac?
- 15:56Speaker 2: Yeah, Kitty, I'm coming.
- 15:57Speaker 6: You know what he wants now?
- 16:00Speaker 7: Oh, what?
- 16:01Speaker 10: He's tired of drinking plain water.
- 16:03Speaker 6: He says if we don't start cutting it with some
- 16:05Speaker 6: good corn, he won't drink anymore.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Then let him go thirsty. He won't hold out long.
- 16:09Speaker 8: No public servant's gonna tell me what's good for him.
- 16:13Speaker 9: You send that lawman down for some whiskey.
- 16:20Speaker 7: Doc.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Now, we've gone to a lot of trouble to keep
- 16:23Speaker 2: you alive.
- 16:24Speaker 10: We sure have.
- 16:26Speaker 9: Oh, don't you worry about me.
- 16:27Speaker 8: I'd get out of bed right now. I like being
- 16:30Speaker 8: waited on.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Now, who's that?
- 16:32Speaker 8: Oh, that's a dumb question. Who's that? How do I know?
- 16:35Speaker 8: Go look.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Doc, I never thought anything could make you any ornerier
- 16:38Speaker 2: than you've always been, but getting stabbed did it.
- 16:40Speaker 9: Oh, never mind the gab.
- 16:42Speaker 8: Just answer the door.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Well, come on in.
- 16:44Speaker 8: Oh, what a man.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Come on in, I said.
- 16:46Speaker 8: Oh, good heavens.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Well, go ahead, Doc. Fire me.
- 16:49Speaker 9: Doc?
- 16:50Speaker 7: Doc?
- 16:51Speaker 1: Doc.
- 16:51Speaker 2: In here.
- 16:52Speaker 8: Oh, there. It's Jerry. Yeah, come on in, son.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Oh, Doc.
- 17:00Speaker 9: Marshal.
- 17:01Speaker 2: What are you doing in town, Jerry?
- 17:02Speaker 9: I come for Doc.
- 17:04Speaker 7: What?
- 17:05Speaker 9: Paul's sick. He's about to die so sick.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Oh, now look, Jerry.
- 17:08Speaker 9: It's the truth, Marshal. Paul made me lie last time,
- 17:11Speaker 9: but he don't even know I'm here now.
- 17:13Speaker 8: He doesn't know you're here.
- 17:15Speaker 9: He's too sick, Doc. It's like he's out of his head.
- 17:17Speaker 9: He don't know nothing.
- 17:18Speaker 2: What about your ma? Does she know you're here?
- 17:21Speaker 9: I didn't tell her. She'd have stopped me.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Doc?
- 17:23Speaker 2: Jerry, your pa tried to kill Doc the last time,
- 17:26Speaker 2: and he's still in bed. Now, he can't go anyplace.
- 17:29Speaker 9: Please, Doc.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Why should he risk his life for your pa? Wait
- 17:32Speaker 2: a minute, Matt.
- 17:32Speaker 8: Now, just wait a minute here, will you? I'll come, Jerry.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Now, don't be silly.
- 17:38Speaker 8: I'm a doctor, Matt. A man's dying. Doesn't matter what man.
- 17:42Speaker 9: I knew you'd come. I knew you would.
- 17:43Speaker 10: You're crazy, Doc. You'll open that cut riding out there. Besides,
- 17:47Speaker 10: you're not strong enough.
- 17:48Speaker 2: You'll be taking an awful chance.
- 17:49Speaker 8: Jerry.
- 17:50Speaker 2: What?
- 17:51Speaker 8: How'd you come to town?
- 17:53Speaker 9: I figured you'd need it, so I brought the wagon.
- 17:56Speaker 8: I thought so. Well, are you going to help me out, Matt?
- 18:03Speaker 2: All right. I'll help you out, Doc.
- 18:08Speaker 6: The End.
- 18:33Speaker 2: I wish you'd let me carry you, Doc.
- 18:35Speaker 8: No, no.
- 18:36Speaker 2: I'll make it.
- 18:37Speaker 9: He's awful weak, ain't he?
- 18:39Speaker 2: Yeah, he is.
- 18:41Speaker 9: Here, I'll get the door. Come on in. Ma's probably
- 18:46Speaker 9: in the bedroom. It's over this way.
- 18:49Speaker 2: We know where it is, Jerry.
- 18:51Speaker 9: Oh, I forgot.
- 18:52Speaker 1: That you, Jerry?
- 18:53Speaker 9: It's me, Ma.
- 18:54Speaker 10: Where you been?
- 18:57Speaker 1: Doc.
- 18:58Speaker 5: What are you doing here?
- 18:59Speaker 8: Jerry came after me, Mrs. Pitcher.
- 19:02Speaker 9: We don't want no doctors.
- 19:05Speaker 8: Your husband's sick?
- 19:06Speaker 10: He's terrible sick.
- 19:08Speaker 5: But you can't do him no good.
- 19:10Speaker 8: I can try.
- 19:10Speaker 9: Jerry, I'm going to whoop you.
- 19:11Speaker 4: No, Mrs.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Pitcher. No, you're not.
- 19:13Speaker 9: Don't you tell me what I'm going to do.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Look at Doc, Mrs. Pitcher. He can tell he shouldn't
- 19:18Speaker 2: be here at all, but he came. He came to
- 19:20Speaker 2: help a man who tried to kill it. And nobody's
- 19:23Speaker 2: going to stop him. Now, come on, Doc. Get out
- 19:33Speaker 2: of the way, Ms.
- 19:34Speaker 7: Pitcher.
- 19:35Speaker 5: Wait a minute.
- 19:43Speaker 2: I'll get you a chair, Doc.
- 19:45Speaker 8: Oh, thank you, man. Thank you very much. Now, here
- 19:48Speaker 8: you are.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Yeah, he.
- 19:56Speaker 8: He looks pretty sick.
- 19:59Speaker 7: Marshall!
- 20:00Speaker 10: You stole me, Jerry!
- 20:01Speaker 2: Now what?
- 20:03Speaker 9: She's got a gun, Marshall! You told me, I said.
- 20:07Speaker 2: I got her, Jerry.
- 20:07Speaker 8: I'll kill you.
- 20:09Speaker 9: You and Doc both.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Give me that.
- 20:10Speaker 8: No!
- 20:11Speaker 7: There.
- 20:13Speaker 2: There. Now you sit down. Go on. Jerry, you go
- 20:22Speaker 2: see if Doc needs any help, huh?
- 20:24Speaker 9: Okay, Marshal.
- 20:27Speaker 2: You know, Miss Pitcher, you don't deserve Doc being here.
- 20:32Speaker 2: You don't deserve it at all.
- 20:33Speaker 7: Oh.
- 20:46Speaker 6: Marshall?
- 20:49Speaker 2: Yeah, what?
- 20:52Speaker 5: I've been thinking.
- 20:53Speaker 9: All night I've been sitting here thinking.
- 20:56Speaker 7: Oh?
- 20:58Speaker 5: I don't want my husband to die.
- 20:59Speaker 9: I can't have him die.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Doc's doing everything he can for him.
- 21:05Speaker 8: Miss Pitcher. Can he save him?
- 21:07Speaker 10: You think he can save him?
- 21:10Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 21:13Speaker 8: Hello, Mrs. Pitcher.
- 21:15Speaker 9: How is he, Doc?
- 21:17Speaker 8: Well, he's past the worst. I think he'll be there.
- 21:25Speaker 10: Can I see him? Can he talk?
- 21:28Speaker 8: Yes, but not for long. He needs a lot of
- 21:32Speaker 8: rest now.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Speaking of rest, Doc, you look like you could use some, too.
- 21:43Speaker 8: Yeah, we're going back to Dodge, man. Oh, I'll sleep
- 21:48Speaker 8: the whole way.
- 21:49Speaker 2: Good.
- 21:49Speaker 9: Doc, he wants to talk to you.
- 22:00Speaker 8: What is it, Pitcher?
- 22:02Speaker 2: Ma.
- 22:04Speaker 7: Ma says you was here all night.
- 22:07Speaker 8: I was, yes.
- 22:09Speaker 7: She says you saved my life.
- 22:12Speaker 8: Maybe I helped her.
- 22:13Speaker 7: Maybe.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 22:15Speaker 7: But what I want to say is that I ain't
- 22:19Speaker 7: gonna pay you.
- 22:20Speaker 8: I didn't ask you to, Fitcher.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Fitcher, Doc saved your life. Maybe he did.
- 22:29Speaker 7: But I ain't gonna pay him.
- 22:30Speaker 2: It doesn't matter, but why not?
- 22:33Speaker 7: Because my cow died.
- 22:35Speaker 2: No, but... Fitcher, I'm gonna.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Matt, Matt, Matt.
- 22:39Speaker 8: Don't bother. Come on, let's go.
- 22:41Speaker 4: Let's go.
- 22:43Speaker 7: Okay, Doc.
- 22:48Speaker 8: Doc?
- 22:49Speaker 7: Yes?
- 22:53Speaker 9: He means what he says, Doc.
- 22:56Speaker 10: I can't change him.
- 22:58Speaker 8: It's all right now.
- 23:00Speaker 10: I can't change him, but there's something I gotta say.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Yes?
- 23:07Speaker 6: I'm proud to have you in my house, Doc.
- 23:11Speaker 2: I'm real proud.
- 23:15Speaker 10: I can't say no more.
- 23:27Speaker 8: Well, Doc, I've been paid, man. I think I've been
