Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Project Ecology episode 181.
- 0:04SPEAKER_01: Today the council is convening the Guardians, rather, are convening to discuss Lanterns.
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: The brand new HBO series that has been taking the DCU universe to the next level, or rather, back a level, to a more rural story, which is one of the more bizarre things I can possibly say about a lantern series, but I'm excited to talk about it.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Guys, my name is Dakota.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: I'm one third of your host today.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: Joined as always with Anthony, and yes, we are covering HBO Max's lanterns.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: And um can't do it alone.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: We are also joined with Rich.
- 0:46SPEAKER_03: Very excited to be with you guys, talk about this.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: I've uh been watching it for you know since it started.
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: I'm really excited.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: I have my uh Hal Jordan is in my bathroom always guarding sector uh 2864.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: I think I'm right on those numbers.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Close.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: You're very close.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: You got two of those you got three of those four numbers correct.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: I got three of the four.
- 1:09SPEAKER_03: Man, I'm close.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: 2814.
- 1:13SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm really, really honestly really excited.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: You know, uh like legitimately last week Dakota brought up covering the show, and I I was just super, super thrilled.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: We pushed it back a day because Rich was really excited about covering this show.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: So had to had to do it to him, had to do it to you guys.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: But uh all three of us are here.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Unfortunately, Jen, my wife, could not make it.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: You know, watching TV with a baby is hard, and she's having a hard time just like getting into anything new recently, which is a drag.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: But yeah.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: Sounds like fear to me.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: It is it is definite fear.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: My wife is not showing any signs of fearlessness.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: She would do well in the Yellow Lantern core, but that's not what we're here to talk about.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Lanterns is an interesting series.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: It is uh the furthest thing I would ever expect to experience from a Green Lantern's uh helmed series.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: Green Lantern's plural, you know, it's not just Hal Jordan, it's not just Jon Stewart.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: It's Hal Jordan, Jon Stewart, Guy Gardner, and also Sinestro in a weird way, you know, like it's there's a there's a lot of lanterns in this show, and I'm all for it.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: I'm like excited to talk about this, but before we jump into any of that, let's get into what we've been up to for the past week.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: And Anthony, what have you been up to, sir?
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: Um nothing too much.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: Mostly just been playing uh World of Warcraft forever in preparation of the release on November 4th.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: It's the beta right now.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: Unfortunately, after the beta, everything is gonna be wiped, so I have to make a brand new character, but that's okay, because I already kind of have an idea of the kind of character that I want to create and kind of the path that I plan on doing that I wish I did when I initially made the character.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: So when it drops, I'm pretty excited to uh to hop into that, into the full game.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: I'm why do you have to why do you guys have to why do you lose the progress you've made in the beta?
- 3:18SPEAKER_03: I'm I don't play a lot of the uh MMR PGs.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: So it's just a matter of like making sure the game is fair to everyone.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: So the beta is making sure that the game works, right?
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Up to a certain level.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: And it's just a way to build hype ultimately.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: You know, I think I think Blizzard knows that their game works after 22 years of service.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: I don't think they really need a beta, but under understanding the player base and making sure that the people that can really influence the the sales of the game or the renewed interest in the game is more important than just the continued player base, I guess.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: And I think that that's that's what they're aiming for with Wow Forever.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: And it's working because you know, I I got a call from my father this past week.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: A bizarre call.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: You know, it was a normal call from my father, you know, like have you you know, like what where are you with this?
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: You know, normal father stuff, you know, like have you done this?
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: And then all of a sudden he goes, but on on a real note, I have to talk about you I have to talk to you about something serious.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: And you know, I'm thinking like, oh man, are my grandparents okay?
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Like what's going on?
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Like, what's happening?
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: I was thinking about getting back into World of Warcraft.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: That was a real conversation I had with my father.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Have you heard about WoW Forever?
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: I'm like, yeah, I've heard about it.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: What about well, your mother and I are gonna be playing separately, so we were hoping that we could also play with you.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: And I'm thinking, like, well, I'm not gonna say no to play a game with my mom and dad.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Like, how often do that does that ever happen to anybody?
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna be jumping on to WoW Forever, and I'm sorry you couldn't influence me, but I'm happy that my father and mother deciding to jump onto that game are going to influence me to jump back into World of Warcraft.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: And I'm honestly I'm kind of scared, you know, like I don't know how deeply I'm gonna get back into this.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: Because last time I was into it, it was like for five years.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: Like it wasn't like a quick thing.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: World of Warcraft is a very addicting thing, you know.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: Like I I'm a little worried, you know, like by the time I'm over this, my son's gonna be able to play the game.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: Like, and it's not like a it's a one it's not a one-time payment thing, it's like a it's a subscription service.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: So here we go again.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Thank you, Blizzard.
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: For but I just saw the meme from San Andreas.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: Here we go again, just going down that alley.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: I'm I I am excited.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: I've watched a couple videos and I asked my dad like what got him back into it.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: I'm just like, you know, like everyone's you know, there's a lot of positive press.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, like I saw like Asmungold is starting his own.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: I was like, why do you even know that name?
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: It's just like he he's a he's a huge I know who he is, and dude dude.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: I run into I because he has so he has like his main guild and then he has like a bunch of like brother and sister guilds.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: I run into it and it's called Olympus.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: I run into somebody in Olympus like every like five steps.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: Like it's it's too big to it's really insane, and like they have a whole add-on for the guild, and it shows like how many players are are across all the guilds, all the realms or whatever.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: He has like he has like 60,000 people.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Dear lord.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: I would say that like he's got the largest like single guild?
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: The largest just guild across, yeah.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: That's two months.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: That's not here that's gonna have to help anyone with that.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: But anyway, Ant, I'm excited to jump in and play with you.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: It does suck a little bit that you have to restart from scratch.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Are you are you excited to play the new race that's gonna be dropping, or are you starting with one of the more classic races?
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: So I've been playing the Skyborn Elf, and uh the it's pretty cool.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: They have like their own starting zone, and I created a mage.
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: That's probably what I'm going to create again as a skyborn mage.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: They have a really cool I don't know, they they kind of remind me of like the Air Janasi a little bit with some of the things that they have.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: Uh they have this thing called um what is it walk on air, and like they can kind of glide down for a little bit.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: And so as a mage, I have the ability to do that and slow fall, so I can like jump from really, really high and not take any damage because I can use both.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: Like I'll do the walk on air, and then once that runs out, slow fall.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: So oh, so I didn't know that walk on air ran out.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: That's interesting.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: It yeah, it has um I guess be because they don't want you to just do it indefinitely.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: So cooldown on that makes a little sense.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: But they also have like the the ability to kind of tap into these like magic, like they're like little like not fissures, but they're like little cracks of like magic like throughout the world that the air that almost call them air genasi that the scare that the skyborn elves can like tap into for like kind of like a little buff.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: So I thought that that's a pretty cool mechanic that they've added.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: It's interesting because it it's like it's WoW Classic Plus, but then it's got elements of retail in it, so it's kind of it's interesting to see like the the combination of of both old and new.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: What I've heard is that it's almost as if it's like World of Warcraft if Blizzard would have made it now.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: You know?
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: That's exactly that before too.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: It's like wow if they made it uh nowadays, yeah.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: Which is great because they've kind of like gotten over like the the buggy stuff that original WoW had, but also it has the feel of original WoW, which is probably the the level grind, like from one to thirty in uh like classic and forever, it takes just as long as it did in classic.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: It's not like like retail where one to thirty can like you can get it to thirty.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: I feel like you could get it to thirty in like a day.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: Like less than a day.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: Thirty in classic?
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: No.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: No, you're that's gonna be some days mo mo like realistically we work, so you're not gonna be doing that all in one day.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm gonna get to level nine, and then it'll take me the weekend to get to level thirteen.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: So just I've never spoken to ChatGPT about this game ever.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: I just said what is the most addictive game ever?
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: The within 16 seconds it said if I had to crown the most addictive video game of all time, I'd give it to World of Warcraft 2004.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: So imagine World of Warcraft 2004 with today's gameplay style.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: I'm excited to see what Blizzard has in store.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: Because they really Yep.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Anthony pulled out the same exact thing.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: It's uh it's definitely gonna be an interesting, interesting uh experience moving forward.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: But yeah, because I've kind of like I've kept my finger on the pulse of Azaroth.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: I've over the years in the podcast, I've always kind of hopped.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you've mentioned it several times.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Several times, yeah.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: So I've definitely you know stayed in the world.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: So it's interesting to see a lot of these like old time players coming back because there are a lot of veterans.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: Like you're you're not the yeah, yeah.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of veterans that stopped.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: You know, they probably hopped on classic for a little while and then they stopped, and then now they're like, you know what?
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: A lot of people have asked for a classic plus, and you know, this is Blizzard giving it to pretty much like the OG players, but it's also like bringing in new players too.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: Like I made a friend in there that's like brand new to World of Warcraft, and I help them like quests and everything and dungeons and everything.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Brand new, brand new to the to to Azeroth and everything.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: I'm telling you, it's bringing new people in.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: That's awesome.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: Alright, let's um move away from the World of Warcraft discussion for a little bit.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: Uh, we have another person on the podcast who's had a crazy couple days.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: Let's take it over to Rich.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: You've not only been invited to a a cultural event, but you have paid for your own cultural event.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: Talk to us about your past 24 hours.
- 11:32SPEAKER_03: It's been pretty crazy.
- 11:33SPEAKER_03: Uh my dad's a doorman in the city, so sometimes you know he works at like Ritzy buildings and he gets uh the people who live there have opportunities, and one of the opportunities was that they offered him two tickets to the Yankee game, uh playoff game, which uh I never thought in my entire life I would ever attend a playoff Yankee game.
- 11:50SPEAKER_03: Uh my dad and I are both of the same ilk.
- 11:52SPEAKER_03: We both feel very out of place.
- 11:55SPEAKER_03: This is a weird s thing because I go to many ballparks around the the country and I never feel out of place.
- 12:02SPEAKER_03: At the Yankee Stadium yesterday, I felt like I wasn't like I didn't even know what I was attending.
- 12:07SPEAKER_03: Like it just felt it was an out-of-body experience.
- 12:10SPEAKER_03: We got we he got like second row behind home plate at the 300 level.
- 12:15SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, no, the seats were the seats were oh no, yeah.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: Sorry, sorry.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: I would have seen you.
- 12:21SPEAKER_03: No, no, let me explain.
- 12:23SPEAKER_03: Uh we're one of the poor's.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: So like when I say second row behind home plate, like that's always gonna be upper level, but it was still fantastic, you know.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: Uh we so it was definitely an experience.
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: I I normally drive to baseball games and I know the stadiums very well.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: You know, there's nothing like attending a stadium during a playoff game because now everything's different, you know, like the entries are different, and there were millions of people, not millions, but thousands of people milling about, and I felt very disoriented.
- 12:47SPEAKER_03: But uh you love the Bronx.
- 12:49SPEAKER_03: We had a good time.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, I mean, and I'm a Queens guy, so like uh you know, Mets games, it's not just because I like the Mets, but also like I know the area very well.
- 12:58SPEAKER_03: So this is a little different.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: But uh as we were leaving, because I I had to catch the uh the Metro North, because we were going to Comic-Con today, so I had to make sure I got back at a decent hour.
- 13:07SPEAKER_03: And the last train that I could take that was a decent hour was 1054.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: So as we're walking out of the stadium, a home run is hit, seemingly, and uh a fan reached over the outfield wall and tried to catch it.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: By doing that, caused uh interference.
- 13:25SPEAKER_03: That fan was actually thrown out, and instead of a tie game, the Yankees were then losing four to three.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: So hold on, I I wanna I wanna stop you right there.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: I just want to know your opinion.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: Do you think it would have been a home run, and do you think it would have been a tie game at that point?
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: I think it wouldn't have been a home run, but I don't think the fielder would have caught it so that the player didn't advance further than second base.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: Okay, I see what you're saying.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: Uh uh I think that really changed because I've seen plays like that where bounce the guy bounces around, he fumbles on grabbing it, he slips, you know, whatever.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: There's so many things.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's no way to dismiss it.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: That's the thing.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: Like there's no way to like it.
- 14:05SPEAKER_03: It's the third time that the New York Yankees the third or f I think it's the third or fourth time that specifically a Yankee fan has interfered in the outcome somehow of a Yankee playoff game.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: It's crazy.
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: They've done it, they did it in the 90s, uh, I think twice.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: Then there was in 2024, famously, two Yankee fans ripped the ball out of a player's.
- 14:29SPEAKER_03: That was crazy.
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: That was a bad one.
- 14:31SPEAKER_03: Got kicked out.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: So uh it was pretty crazy.
- 14:34SPEAKER_03: It was an out-of-body experience.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: Thank you guys for uh pushing the show.
- 14:38SPEAKER_03: I really want to talk about lanterns, but uh it was it was a cool thing to go to, I won't lie.
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: Like I, you know, I didn't have to pay a dime, so it was it was nice that way.
- 14:46SPEAKER_03: I would have never paid a single penny to go.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: I'm sure you were very happy with the outcome.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: My dad was so paranoid that we uh asked someone to take our picture and I handed them the phone, and my phone had is a Mets case, right?
- 14:58SPEAKER_03: Okay, and he's like, Hey kid, should we use my phone?
- 15:01SPEAKER_03: I'm like, You have an iPhone 8 dad, put it over here.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: Here's the thing though, like I'm gonna be straight with you, Rich.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: I don't think Yankees fans care if you have a i uh a Mets Mets case.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: I don't think that they do.
- 15:13SPEAKER_03: My dad's hyper paranoid.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: I understand, okay.
- 15:15SPEAKER_03: And then uh more relevant, I guess, to the to our show, I got to go to New York City Comic-Con.
- 15:20SPEAKER_03: It is uh I think it's like I want to put it, I mean, I I went to like one of the, you know, if I didn't go to the first one, I went to the second one.
- 15:28SPEAKER_03: You know, like I've been going every year since the pandemic.
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: It's actually something that's really wholesome for my family and I.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: We've gone ever since Charlie was born.
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: His first costume was uh a Wolverine onesie back in the day.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: He's gone every single year.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: We cosplay as a family every year.
- 15:45SPEAKER_03: This year we decided to go as Ted Lasso Coach Beard, and uh Charlie was Trent Krim from the Ted Lasso show.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: So uh it's the first time, it's really cool.
- 15:55SPEAKER_03: Normally, like Charlie or I'm gonna be around.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Wait a minute, I just realized you're wearing a Richmond jersey.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm still in cosplay.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: I was I I was like, I recognize that dog on his jersey.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Like, what is that from?
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: It's from Ted L dude, that's sick.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: I'll send you guys a little bit.
- 16:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, please do, please do.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: The coolest thing is that normally Charlie or I get stopped a lot and asked to take pictures, right?
- 16:17SPEAKER_03: But this is the first time that Lauren got that joy, right?
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: Like that normally Lauren's like they're like, oh, and they piece together that she's like also in the crew.
- 16:27SPEAKER_03: But like this, I feel like this is the first time in you know, Charlie's 11.
- 16:32SPEAKER_03: So 11 years that we've been going, that people were like, Coach, believe, and they were just stopping her and asking her for pictures.
- 16:41SPEAKER_03: She uh so we had a you know, we had a great time, ran into friends, uh, got some really cool merch.
- 16:46SPEAKER_03: I got the Schwartz that I was talking about early in the show.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: You were talking off camera off episode there was uh the the Schwartz ring, the Schwartz ring from Space Balls.
- 16:55SPEAKER_03: Really cool moment was that Charlie really recently asked me to download a whole bunch of uh or purchase, I'm sorry, purchase, a whole bunch of Al Ewing Venom comics.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:05SPEAKER_03: And he specifically wanted Al Ewing.
- 17:07SPEAKER_03: Yes, I purchased.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: It wasn't uh Jack Sparrow thing.
- 17:10SPEAKER_03: It was no, I went to All Yeah Comics in Harrison.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: All jokes aside, I did go to All Yeah Comics and buy a bunch of them.
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: So we're walking down the Artist Alley, and honestly, we're very tired at this point.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: We've been at the con for about four hours.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: We're doing like a slight run through of Artist Alley, uh, which is downstairs, and if you wait till the end of the day, it's not great.
- 17:30SPEAKER_03: It's really packed, and as you go down the escalator, I don't know, I have a little bit of like crowd anxiety.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: Going down the escalator at New York City Comic-Con to Artist Alley, it's intimidating.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: It's so we decide we're only gonna do like three rooms.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: There's nothing like it.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: It's it is like entering the cradle of civilization cradle of creativity.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: It's not like even it is one of the best feelings in the world, and I don't know what Rich is talking about.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: But um keep keep on Rich.
- 18:00SPEAKER_03: I got to see uh quickly Chris Claremont, who's uh one of my favorites.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: You saw Claremont.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 18:06SPEAKER_03: I I've met him locally here, but you know, so I didn't go up to him, but I I showed you know Charlie, and then we got to see Al Ewing.
- 18:14SPEAKER_03: I was just we only walked down three of the lanes there, the rows, and Al Ewing was sitting there and I was like, Charlie, it's Al Ewing.
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: So he's like, No.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: So he got to go and get Al Ewing's autograph.
- 18:24SPEAKER_03: The comic was signed to him directly, so uh I thought that was uh that was one of my favorite moments, I think.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: You know, my wife really enjoying it, and Charlie getting to meet an artist that he's really starting to enjoy.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: I thought was uh it was great, you know.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: Uh the only thing about it is it's the Thursday.
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: It was honestly the cheaper option.
- 18:42SPEAKER_03: And the one complaint I think that we all had was like the lack of really dope costumes.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: Uh they usually reserve those for later in the week.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: Thursday doesn't really get a lot of love that way sometimes, and uh that's probably the only thing that was a little disappointing.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: Tell you what though, Thursday of New York Comic-Con is usually the publishing day.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: So for me, I got a lot of good news today.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: I got a lot of good news today, from Star Wars to Avatar The Last Airbender.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: We have a new Claudia Gray book coming out featuring Princess Leia.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: So it's gonna be taking place after A New Hope.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: Um and Claudia Gray is probably my favorite writer of the canon era for the Star Wars novels.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: So I'm I'm extremely excited about that.
- 19:27SPEAKER_03: Small question.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: So, like, if I remember correctly, uh I remember reading a book with Princess Leia where she went to a planet and the this is like after New Hope, and they or maybe is it Claudia Gray where she it was all about how she went to this planet where they kind of revere Darth Vader, and maybe it's a little later in the timeline, actually.
- 19:51SPEAKER_03: They revere Darth Vader and they kind of honored her as like his daughter, and she kind of leveraged that a little bit, but maybe that's a little bit later.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: You might be conflating a couple things.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: Um, she does have a book called Bloodline that Yeah, yes, Bloodline.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: So she doesn't go to a planet that reveres Darth Vader, but she does work with a younger senator who has respect for the Empire, and he has Empire era memorabilia that she finds very offensive.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: So you you might be conflating the idea, but she at that point is in her 50s, 60s, so she's Ben Solo's already like in his teenagers at that point.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Oh okay.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: But she's done a couple books about Leia, she's done Bloodline, she did Leia Princess of Alderon, which is another fantastic book.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: She did the the book Lost Stars, which is a reimagining of the Star Wars story with like a rebel and an empire character who are kind of in love with each other, and it's genius, it's absolutely genius.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: I know Anthony and I, I think we read a book called Mas uh Master and Apprentice, which covers Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, their story.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: It's she's so good at writing characters that I I've I think I've read out all of her Star Wars output up until this point.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: So hearing that she has another Leia book coming out is very exciting.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: Dark Disciple No, no, no.
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: Oh, is that no no no, that's Christy Gold.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, correct.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: Boom.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: Um she's another good one though, too.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: I like her stuff.
- 21:27SPEAKER_03: Christy Gold is uh with Adventress with uh with Voss.
- 21:32SPEAKER_03: Quinlan Voss, yeah.
- 21:34SPEAKER_03: That yes.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: That was uh that was the first Star Wars book that made me cry.
- 21:37SPEAKER_03: To correct myself before anybody gets uh up in the comments, I was talking about the uh Maliari Usch that were in the Dark Force Rising, which is the Timothy Zahn series.
- 21:48SPEAKER_03: I was uh I was kind of mixing up a couple of uh things all together.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: That makes a lot more sense.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: But that I didn't so when Disney erased the after Jedi stuff, right?
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Did they also like is like Trusa Bhakura, for example, or the courtship of Princess Leia, are those not canon anymore either?
- 22:10SPEAKER_03: So is this like replacing that canon now?
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: So um I mean it's been a w it's it's well over a decade at this point that you have to you've had to come to terms with this.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Um I'm not telling you something new.
- 22:26SPEAKER_03: Um I just wasn't sure if like Truce of Recur.
- 22:29SPEAKER_03: Like I, you know, there was like the Witches of Dath Amir and True Supra Current.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: Like there was a couple of the early.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying there aren't good legends books, and those books still exist.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: What's amazing is that, you know, like Star Wars is one of those unique franchises where books that were released, like tie-in books that were released 50 years ago, are still in print today.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: You know, like you can still buy new copies of 50-year-old Star Wars books, even if they aren't like in their current canon.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: So like that's a that's a big selling point for me anyway, at least for getting into legends or whatever.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: But uh going back into Avatar, The Last Airbender, there's a couple new things, but for me, the biggest item on the agenda of new stuff is that they're bringing Korra graphic novel trilogies back.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: So the comic books, I'm showing you guys this, but like on this shelf here, these series of books are like comic book trilogies that existed for the Last Airbender.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: I think there were six trilogies for The Last Airbender and two trilogies for the Legend of Korra.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: Finally, they're doing a third trilogy of comic books for The Legend of Korra that is written by the original uh writer for the series, or the original uh like showrunner Michael um uh Michael Dante Di Martino.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: And that's huge for me.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: So that's all I'll say.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: I haven't been up to too much besides like doing a little bit of work on my app, and we're well into the recording at this point, but we've been up to a lot, so let's jump into our discussion of lanterns.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: Anthony, when you uh were pitched this series originally, what did you think versus what did you feel when you finally got to sit down and watch it?
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: I thought it was definitely an interesting take, and it kind of made me think.
- 24:20SPEAKER_02: So the the the changes to some of the characters kind of made me think back on, and it's I know this is insane, but there's huge character changes to Hal Jordan, right?
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: He in the comics, I know in the ser in the series he's old, but in the comics he's I mean, yeah, he's got a bit of cockiness, you know, he's a pilot, um, but he was always like very heroic and like very like pretty honorable, right?
- 24:49SPEAKER_02: And then I could say the same thing with Jon Stewart.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: Jon Stewart is like kind of embi embodies the the Green Lantern core pretty well.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: And these characters were are different, right?
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: And like the way that they're setting up how how Jon Stewart is supposed to be the next one next Green Lantern is interesting.
- 25:12SPEAKER_02: But something that made me think so Hal Jordan's personality and this kind of reminded me of Luke Skywalker from The Last Jedi.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: I feel like there is I think it was an interesting take, and I I didn't hate it, but I know people who don't like this series because of the changes to Hal Jordan.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: And I was thinking like, you know, I was like, okay, I I was trying to think of the perspective, and the perspective was Luke Skywalker.
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: People hated The Last Jedi because of the changes to Luke Skywalker's character, and they don't believe that he would have been this crotchety, like just person to just give up on everything.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: You know, like the last time we saw him, he was very, you know, young, young and like kind of heroic, and so you know, that was a huge gripe for a lot of people, and so I could see that same gripe being formed for this show too, for this character, you know?
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we have a long-term character with Hal Jordan being in DC comics.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: You want to be able to relate to the character that you grew up with in some way or form.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: And I think one thing that we have to deal with James Gunn's DCU is that he likes to turn the tables on characters.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: That's something that he's very famously done even before the DCU with Guardians, you know, like a lot of the characters of Guardians aren't anything like they are in the comic books.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: But again, nobody really knew the character nobody knew Star Lord, nobody knew Groot or I mean some people knew Rocket, but Drax or Gamora, they be these were that was a deep cut.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: Relatively deep cuts, but now they're household names, you know?
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: So it's one of those.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: Did he do them a favor by you know changing the base chemistry of those characters, or did he do them a disservice?
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: Because now people going back into those comics don't actually get those experiences that they were promised by the movie.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: So it's it's back, you know, you can play this game back and forth.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: Um that said it's a lot different.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: Hal Jordan is a bigger character.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: I feel like it's a lot bigger.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: Green Lantern's a lot bigger.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: Hal Jordan is a bigger character, and um he was never a he was never a rated R character, I would I don't think, you know, based on like what I've read.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: So it was interesting, and I I will say that there was a change there, and that's not the Hall Hal Jordan that I know, but it was I thought it was an interesting take.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: If that is if I'm allowed to say that.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I thought it was an interesting take on the character.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: Because I, you know, you Yeah, yeah, I would say so too.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: I feel like I don't think they were trying to disrespect Hal Jordan.
- 28:03SPEAKER_02: I think that Hal Jordan they're they were trying to kind of reflect or they were trying to there there was like a parallel that was going on with Hal Jordan and his father, right?
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: His father was kind of like at the end of his rope, and Hal Jordan was essentially there too.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: And I mean there was even a where Jon Stewart was talking to Hal Jordan's copy of his consciousness, and they even bounced with the idea of like maybe Hal Jordan killed himself, right?
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: Like his you know, the like his dad, which we find out he didn't, but you know, there there is definitely that darkness there too, with like, you know, there's some mental health going on with his family, you know, because it I think it like went on like from his like grandfather too, that there was some stuff going on.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think it's it's it's fairly interesting when it comes to the you know, you mentioned Anthony that like they kind of are mirroring what happened with his father to himself, and I think that that is a important distinction because that's part of the storytelling that they're trying to deliver.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: You know, like we don't know a lot about his father.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: We do know that like he wasn't there for most of Hal Jordan's life.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: But what I will say about the Hal Jordan that we did get is that he's a very developed character, you know, like we you can look at him at any one given episode and decide, like, wow, this guy's a jerk, or maybe this guy's okay, or maybe this guy's a jerk, or you know, this guy kind of sucks, or you know, like you can bounce back and forth, and then by the final episode, you're like, if you only watch the final episode, you're like, Hal Jordan's alright, you know, he he wants what's best for John.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: And we don't really know what the final version of Hal Jordan actually was.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: We don't know where he was in his life cycle, how jaded he actually was.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: But I find that that makes him such an interesting character for me, because I don't know what to expect from him any given scene.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: He could be trying to like run a car into a pole with the person inside it, or he could be doing everything he can to save this person.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: So, yeah.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: That was a bit crazy though, I will say that he crashed into that pole and yeah, Jon Stewart literally like burned alive.
- 30:25SPEAKER_02: Like, I mean he got saved by a manhunter.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: I yeah, so that's that is uh a little bit far for me.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: And I I did think that there was a moment in the series where I was definitely not a big fan of Hal Jordan, and that's okay because that's the story that they're telling.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: I I'm not I'm not like super I you know, even from the beginning of the series, I'm not married to the character because I I realize they're doing a different version of that, it's not gonna be the exact same thing.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: And the story is ultimately about Jon Stewart taking over the role of Hal Jordan.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't know how they're gonna get there, I do now, but yeah.
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: Well, at least for Earth.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: At least for Earth.
- 31:07SPEAKER_02: I I do like that we got Guy Gardner, which he is a jerk.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: Like, I mean, he is just like straight up dude, the gold tooth.
- 31:16SPEAKER_02: The gold tooth, man.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 31:19SPEAKER_03: You know, I have a little bit of a different take on this because I had I don't if I I have to be honest, I don't think I've ever read one Green Lantern comic book in my entire life.
- 31:29SPEAKER_03: So I what I know of Hal Jordan was the Ryan Reynolds movie.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: And uh the I think I I spoke about this when we watched the original, uh, or when we watched the Ryan Reynolds movie, you know, it was being at Great Adventure and seeing the the oath on on like the the write-up for every character that they had.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: They used to have for the Superman ride, they used to have a write-up for every like a lot of the DC characters.
- 31:56SPEAKER_03: And you know, you that was one of the rides that when it came out, it was there were the long lines.
- 32:01SPEAKER_03: So I remember just standing in front of the line, the just staying there in line memorizing what was there.
- 32:07SPEAKER_03: So I remember like, you know, like I know the oath by heart and stuff like that.
- 32:11SPEAKER_03: So I'm more of a DCU like observer from like I I'm really more about the movies than I am about any of the comics.
- 32:20SPEAKER_03: I I've other than like some Batman stuff, very little DC comic reading in my life.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: So I didn't have this marriage to Hal being one certain way or another.
- 32:31SPEAKER_03: Like this was just like I thought this was adapted from a comic, so I was like, oh, this is just how this is kind of who Hal Jordan is.
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: And it didn't really bother me.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: I mean, the scene where he drove John into the pole, when we're like thinking about everything, I wonder if that he he was pushing the manhunter to come out and reveal herself.
- 32:53SPEAKER_03: You know, he was pushing Zoe.
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: He was doing that to push Zoe to a point where he thought that because he had his I think he had his suspicions that it was Zoe, and he knew that Zoe and John had a relationship, so I think that he was trying to suss out if Zoe was indeed the manhunter and would kind of come up and save him.
- 33:13SPEAKER_03: A risky case.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: I think he would have pulled up on her though.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: Like when she showed up, he would have pulled up.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: He would have shown up.
- 33:19SPEAKER_02: I think that like I think it was his twisted way of like kind of like removing him from the board.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: I don't think that he was a hundred percent not wanting John to take over.
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: I think that there was a small part of him that wanted that.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, like you kind of got that in the end.
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: And I I just think that like I think it was a mixture of that, like I mean, because yeah, he he's a bit upset that John was, you know, withholding information, and you know, the way that John was kind of like colluding, you know, colluding with the guardians in the background, and you know, I mean he heard that whole thing that like you know John was essentially that how Jordan didn't deserve the ring, you know?
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: And you know, what which we don't know how how Jordan was in this universe, but I know in the comics, if he hadn't earned it when he first got the ring, by the time he passes on the mantle, he de he definitely well deserved having that that ring because he was extremely honorable.
- 34:26SPEAKER_02: He held that oath.
- 34:27SPEAKER_02: Like, I mean, not to say that that you know there weren't any crazy moments, like I haven't read everything Green Lantern, but I mean the Justice League was like my first I mean not my first foray into DC comics, but I think it was like the first time it really like piqued my interest and like read a little bit of like the DC comics like from that because I uh dude the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, those cartoons were absolutely amazing, and then they they kind of did um some they did like a little bit of crossovers.
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: There was a a cartoon called Static Shock that they crossed over the Justice League with Static Shock.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: So I got to I got to know a lot of these characters like through that, and so that's when I went and kind of like I read a little bit more of Jon Stewart because that was like really like my first Green Lantern that I really like got to know, and then I got to know a little bit of Hal Jordan.
- 35:21SPEAKER_02: So that's why like I kind of bring up you know like the the thoughts of you know like why some people might not like the show as much.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: Like I think it's great and I think it's done really well, but for some of those like crazy like comic book fans, it m the the character changes might have not landed as well, if that makes sense.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: No, and that's a really good point, Anthony.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: I think that that is something that's worth talking about.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: I I just think that And I know it sounds like that I don't like the show, but I actually liked it.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: I thought it was done really No, you're playing Devil's Advocate, and that's that's totally fine.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: I think that uh it's important to play Devil's Advocate on occasion when it comes to certain stuff that people have either, you know, like a mild or acute dislike towards for a very specific reason.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: And yeah, uh Hal Jordan was played very at the end of his rope, I guess you could say.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: He had done his course as a hero and he was just doing things his own way at a at this point.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: And I think that that's in at the that's an important distinction because I don't think he was always this way.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: I don't think he was always a loose canon.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: I think he became that way in his later years, he he just became jaded.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: Maybe that was after the fact of uh Sinestro like killing one of the guardians.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: You know, Sinestro was his teacher as a lantern.
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: So we don't actually know like when how Jordan changed or like when he lost his moral compass, I guess.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: Because he definitely lost it a little bit, you know, like there's there's no way to deny that.
- 36:57SPEAKER_03: And they don't really I think it's like I it reminds me of the relationship between Obi-Wan and Dooku.
- 37:04SPEAKER_03: But like let's say Obi-Wan isn't as positive as he is, right?
- 37:09SPEAKER_03: Because like it's almost like Hal's just a little bit to the left, or more to the left than Obi-Wan is, right?
- 37:16SPEAKER_03: Like he saw his mentor, like who he worshipped and like thought was like the Beesneys, now prove himself to be a kind of an awful entity, but then that behavior made him challenge it challenged his belief in the Guardians, right?
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Obi-Wan never wavers in his belief of the council.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 37:39SPEAKER_03: Okay, which is almost a little bit unbelievable in that universe, right?
- 37:43SPEAKER_03: It's like because I honestly I and I again I defer to you guys, I don't know Hal Jordan as a character that well, but this idea that like your mentor breaks bad and starts, and he's you know, he's a he's a serpent, he's a wordsmith, like he manipulates people so much.
- 38:02SPEAKER_03: So I really think a lot of this is that Sinestro manipulated Hal so much that he questioned everything and became an isolationist and grew in his grumpiness and his, you know.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he he basically like stepped into whatever apostasy that Sinestro fell into.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: You know, like we don't know what happened to Sinestro, we don't know why he broke bad with the Guardians, why he killed the Guardian, one of the twelve.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: And we don't know to what extent Hal still respects him at that point, because we we know he visits him for advice in jail, briefly, but we don't know what they talked about or like how much he actually respects Sinestro's opinion on the goings on of the galaxy.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: Like, there's there's a lot that's still unknown about Hal's jaded demeanor, but we know that he was still chaotic good.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: You know, like he definitely everything that he did while it was chaotic still leaned toward, you know, like the good of the universe or the town or whatever he deemed to be protecting at that given moment.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: And I think that he loses his way definitely because he realizes he's being replaced.
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: And I I think that there's something to that, you know.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: Um I I don't want to say like it's it's a good thing to like get into a car accident with your protege, but I do feel like he wasn't ready to give up that mantle, so being forcibly put into that position forced his hand a little bit, but again, nobody's forcing your hand into uh car accident with your protege in the car.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: So twice, twice, two times, twice, yeah.
- 39:52SPEAKER_02: One one's off the cliff and then one is into a pole.
- 39:56SPEAKER_03: Anthony, do you think you know you know a lot a lot more about Hal Jordan than I do and everything the way it works out?
- 40:03SPEAKER_03: Do you think that they shot themselves in the foot by having him die in the first episode?
- 40:08SPEAKER_03: I know like the story's great and everything, but now like if you do a second season or if you do something else, like now Hal's not there.
- 40:17SPEAKER_03: Are we just gonna do the hologram?
- 40:19SPEAKER_02: So I I'm actually No, no, the the the hologram is gone.
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's right, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:25SPEAKER_02: When John recharged the ring, it erased the consciousness.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: At least that's what was said.
- 40:31SPEAKER_02: I'm actually surprised that you like that.
- 40:32SPEAKER_02: This show was one giant flashback, and you hate flashbacks.
- 40:36SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 40:37SPEAKER_03: I won't lie to you guys.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: I'm watching it and I'm like, oh man, why do they gotta do this to me?
- 40:43SPEAKER_03: Like, why can't I just get a linear story along?
- 40:45SPEAKER_01: But I I appreciate it.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: It wasn't necessarily flashbacks, it was like three linear stories going on at once.
- 40:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think that's the difference, Ant.
- 40:53SPEAKER_03: I think like when you just go like, oh, yeah.
- 40:56SPEAKER_03: Remember that time we did this, and then like and then you go back, you know, like Naruto episodes for three in a row out of nowhere.
- 41:03SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, it's like the time we had that bowl of ramen.
- 41:05SPEAKER_03: That annoys me way more.
- 41:07SPEAKER_03: I think they I was confused, you know.
- 41:10SPEAKER_03: Obviously, I don't like the timeline stuff so much, but uh, I was a little confused at times.
- 41:15SPEAKER_03: Also, I feel like they dropped the ball, like they had like 1986, what was it, 2026, right?
- 41:22SPEAKER_03: But then there was like one year that was like 2005, or like one of the years was like not the sixth, and I was like, really?
- 41:28SPEAKER_03: Like, why do you gotta be dirty?
- 41:30SPEAKER_03: Like, just make it clear, you know, like back to the future.
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: There was a lot of flashbacks.
- 41:34SPEAKER_02: I'm actually really surprised that you like this show because they had the John flashbacks to when he was a kid, then the Rush, the Rushville flashback.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: Honestly, this show was nothing but flashbacks like through and through.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: It was it was like 80% flashback, I will admit.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: It was like 80% flashbacks.
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: I'm actually where it was like 2016 or 1996 or whatever it was.
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're right.
- 41:56SPEAKER_02: It was like 2026, and then it would go back to 2016 to see what happened in uh Rushville, and then we go back to 2026, and then I like how the way that they age up Jon Stewart is just by giving him a beard, which is a classic beard.
- 42:12SPEAKER_02: It's actually Jon Stewart, but that like that's how I remember him in the comics and the cartoons.
- 42:17SPEAKER_02: He has like that like goatee kind of beard, you know, with the mustache.
- 42:21SPEAKER_02: So that's like that classic look.
- 42:23SPEAKER_02: I do like that that we got uh what is it, the Guy Gardner again.
- 42:29SPEAKER_02: Like the last time we saw him was in the Superman.
- 42:32SPEAKER_02: I honestly I think it's so funny that they kept his haircut, and I feel like it wouldn't be Guy Gardner without the haircut.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: It's just that bowl cut.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: Like it's just that bowl cut.
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: He's just yes, yeah, he needs to be that guy.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: So I I want to talk a little bit about that.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: Because like when they originally signed on to doing a Superman movie and they were gonna show like Hawk Girl and Mr.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: Terrific and Green Lantern, I was like, that sounds great.
- 43:02SPEAKER_01: And then they said Guy Gardner, and I was like, huh?
- 43:05SPEAKER_01: Because Guy is like he's not that guy, you know, like he's not the guy you want.
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: He's a guy, but he's not that guy, you know?
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: He's he's the jerk of the Green Lanterns.
- 43:18SPEAKER_02: He's the guy that I will say I've read some of his comics and like I genuinely like laughed like big time while reading those.
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: He's just the outcast of the Green Lantern.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: And there there's been a couple Green Lanterns.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: Um there's probably like six of them at this point.
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: So they had their pick of the lot.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: They chose Guy Gardner, who is uh a big one.
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: He's he's among the top three or four Green Lanterns that have existed outside of Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, and Jon Stewart.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: But they I I could not believe that they chose Guy Gardner as the Green Lantern of today for the Superman movie.
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: I thought
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: That was a a crazy It's so James Gunn though.
- 44:03SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:04SPEAKER_02: So James Gunn for him to like pick.
- 44:07SPEAKER_02: Like he's like, he could have done Hal Jordan.
- 44:09SPEAKER_02: He could have done Jon Stewart.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: Which which Queen Lance are you gonna choose?
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: Choose the one that everyone hates.
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:16SPEAKER_02: And it's so funny because they give him that like personality.
- 44:20SPEAKER_02: Like when he's like fighting, like remember like he like does the middle fingers?
- 44:24SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 44:25SPEAKER_03: He's so Nathan, it's a Nathan Fillion role.
- 44:28SPEAKER_03: Nathan Filion.
- 44:29SPEAKER_03: Perfect.
- 44:29SPEAKER_03: It's a perfect job.
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: It's a perfect role.
- 44:32SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't know, again, this is I don't know Guy Gardner that much.
- 44:36SPEAKER_03: For me, Guy Gardner is Nathan Fillion, right?
- 44:39SPEAKER_03: Like the haircut is and like his face, like he's so good at being so obnoxious and really embracing the character that like in his few performances, I feel like I understand Guy Gardner without ever reading the comics.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: Yep, you do.
- 44:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 44:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's crazy, man.
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: It's so crazy.
- 44:58SPEAKER_03: And like I feel like the hair is so great because like I don't know, man.
- 45:03SPEAKER_03: Like in this, you know, we have we have all the superhero stuff, right?
- 45:07SPEAKER_03: We have all this content.
- 45:08SPEAKER_03: In 30 years, man, that bold cut's gonna shine.
- 45:12SPEAKER_03: Like people are gonna look back, I think, and be like, but that Guy Gardner, you know, bowl cut was perfect on Nathan Fillion.
- 45:18SPEAKER_02: You know, like hey man, the amount of like mullets that I see like people out there with, I it really doesn't surprise me that the bowl cut will come like and be like popular.
- 45:28SPEAKER_01: But that's all it takes is let's let's just let's run this back a little bit because Guy Gardner was chosen as the Green Lantern for the beginning of this DC universe, the DCU, and then this show called Lanterns comes out, and it's about Jon Stewart and Hal Jordan.
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: So you as a DC me personally, as a DC guy, I was just thinking like, what the heck are they on about?
- 45:51SPEAKER_01: Like, what are they gonna do with this?
- 45:53SPEAKER_01: This was not the story that I expected, but this is the only story that could have made sense no, it's not the only story that could have made sense, but it's a it's a story about Hal Jordan, who is no longer Hal Jordan, basically, and they're trying to find a replacement, and Jon Stewart is too good to take the ring for himself.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: That is a great Green Lantern story, and not only that, this is a great detective story.
- 46:19SPEAKER_01: From beginning to end, you have who is the manhunter, who what are these aliens fighting for, who killed Hal Jordan, and then what happened on that planet of aliens that like caused them to like go crazy with fear?
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: Like there's so many little mysteries, and it's almost like a detective story.
- 46:37SPEAKER_02: I it's a detective story, but uh, but like now not a Batman, like Batman's a detective.
- 46:43SPEAKER_02: No, Green Lantern is now.
- 46:45SPEAKER_03: This is like Anthony.
- 46:47SPEAKER_03: This is I think why I was able to see past the flashbacks.
- 46:50SPEAKER_03: I really like who done it type things.
- 46:53SPEAKER_03: Like I really like to try to figure out who it is and kind of parse that out.
- 46:57SPEAKER_03: And I think that it was the whole entire world was such a new thing for me that I think I kind of accepted the flashback stuff because I really wanted to know like who killed how?
- 47:07SPEAKER_03: How did we get there?
- 47:08SPEAKER_03: You know, like the I think the way they did that first episode uh really kind of got it got its claws on me.
- 47:16SPEAKER_01: Before we jump any further, I just want to take a moment to request to our audience that they give this podcast a five-star juicy review.
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: As I discussed this, I am drinking a our official but non-official Voodoo Ranger Juicy Haze IPA.
- 47:35SPEAKER_01: Make sure that your podcast is or excuse me, make sure that your review is a juicy five-star review, guys.
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: We cannot possibly continue just talking into the ether without you know reaching a little bit more viewership or listenership.
- 47:51SPEAKER_01: So your help in this matter, uh, you know, d wherever you're listening to your podcast, be sure to give us a five-star juicy review.
- 47:59SPEAKER_01: And we'll be sure to continue on next week and the weeks to come because that helps us get to more ears.
- 48:05SPEAKER_03: But yeah, dad, you listen to this, dad?
- 48:07SPEAKER_03: Leave a damn review.
- 48:08SPEAKER_03: My dad hasn't left a review yet, so I'm just gonna call him out in the podcast.
- 48:12SPEAKER_03: Also, I just want to comment, never, I mean, I guys, you can't see this because this is an audio podcast, obviously, but Dakota pulling out that uh unofficial, official beer of the podcast, unofficial, official ju juice.
- 48:24SPEAKER_03: Uh I I had the same beer uh lined up uh on my so I was very excited to see this.
- 48:29SPEAKER_03: Uh Anthony, we gotta make it a trifecta one day.
- 48:32SPEAKER_03: All right, one day.
- 48:33SPEAKER_02: I'll drink IPAs.
- 48:35SPEAKER_02: I do not like that hops.
- 48:36SPEAKER_01: You just gotta open you just gonna hold the beer close to the camera.
- 48:39SPEAKER_01: That's what's all you gotta do, buddy.
- 48:41SPEAKER_02: If I if I took a sip, I I would like internally like puke from just from the hops.
- 48:48SPEAKER_01: Uh spontaneous combustion right here on the podcast.
- 48:51SPEAKER_02: Yes, uh yeah, I would just instant headache.
- 48:53SPEAKER_02: Let's uh yeah, that oh something that you brought up.
- 48:57SPEAKER_02: You uh the so the the show like the primary antagonist of this were the manhunters, which is interesting because like one of another character that I really liked from Justice League, Martian Manhunter, and like that's his people.
- 49:12SPEAKER_01: I'm so curious what they're doing with that.
- 49:14SPEAKER_02: John Jones.
- 49:15SPEAKER_02: I don't know I can't wait to see John Jones.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: I don't know what they're doing with that because like you know, like they keep saying this is the last manhunter, this is the last manhunter, and this, you know, the last episode introduces the concept.
- 49:27SPEAKER_01: Spoiler alert to everyone watching or here listening, this is actually a pretty big spoiler, but the the the lady that John kills uh in this, I think in episode five or whatever, is not the last manhunter.
- 49:41SPEAKER_01: The reason she was willing to allow herself to be killed is because her grandson was also uh manhunter by blood.
- 49:51SPEAKER_01: Noah, the son of is it Carrie or Kelly?
- 49:56SPEAKER_01: I think it's Carrie.
- 49:57SPEAKER_01: I've been watching I've been watching uh Office again, and Kelly is a character, so I'm I'm confusing the two a little bit.
- 50:04SPEAKER_01: But Carrie has a son that she wa she you know she revealed that sh was born out of some sort of transaction that was created via the manhunter previous to her.
- 50:20SPEAKER_01: And Noah, her own son, became an embodiment of that and literally is a Manhunter.
- 50:28SPEAKER_01: So we don't know actually at this point whether or not Noah is going to be the character's true name.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: And I almost think that like John, John, as in like the Green Lantern, John Stewart, is going to take Noah under his wing a little bit, and that character might become a John Jones type character, like a Martian Manhunter character.
- 50:49SPEAKER_01: Because I don't know how else they're gonna like broach that idea, you know.
- 50:53SPEAKER_01: Like they've brought up manhunters, they brought up that they're very dangerous, that they're very power-hungry, but that this particular manhunter is very conscious of his own power hungriness, if that makes sense.
- 51:07SPEAKER_01: So he he doesn't want to continue in that route.
- 51:11SPEAKER_01: And Jon Stewart is of the mindset that he wants to he thinks he's a good kid.
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: You know, he wants to do what's best for this kid.
- 51:19SPEAKER_01: And I I I have a feeling that Noah might end up becoming John Jones, the the Martian manhunter, as you know, as we say.
- 51:30SPEAKER_02: I could see that because like John Jones really does have like a a compassionate, like like he has a really good heart in in the show.
- 51:39SPEAKER_02: Um like he like loses his family, and he he essentially doesn't want like anybody to experience that hurt, also.
- 51:47SPEAKER_02: And I mean he has some like really cool powers.
- 51:50SPEAKER_02: I hope like they explore that, like he could like go like go through solid objects, he could fly, like he had all these like really cool powers.
- 51:57SPEAKER_02: So I'm really interested in seeing like how they explore that.
- 52:00SPEAKER_01: I also I feel like I I remembered Jon Stewart having a good relationship with John Jones.
- 52:06SPEAKER_01: So like there might be something there.
- 52:08SPEAKER_01: Like I might I might not be just like shooting out into the ether, but Rich, you have something to say.
- 52:13SPEAKER_03: So I just I hope that this detail comes out at some point because you probably had to get papers to you know corroborate Noah's birth.
- 52:22SPEAKER_03: And I wonder if maybe a Luther Corp maybe was behind the documents.
- 52:25SPEAKER_03: Uh it would just be like an awesome call back to like off Smallville and how like Lionel Luther was in charge of the adoption papers, you know, and they're like, where did this boy come from?
- 52:35SPEAKER_03: And they're like, Oh, well, you know, Lionel Luther's adoption company, uh, you know, he was the one who made the transaction over here.
- 52:42SPEAKER_03: I wonder about the Martian Money Hunter stuff, and I what you guys are saying makes sense.
- 52:47SPEAKER_03: I don't know if I know about enough about the manhunters.
- 52:50SPEAKER_03: First, why didn't Zoe just leave Earth?
- 52:53SPEAKER_03: Because they were being hunted by the Guardians?
- 52:55SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 52:56SPEAKER_01: I it's one of those things where like I don't know enough about that like we just have to pick up the pieces.
- 53:02SPEAKER_03: And like Anton is a manhunter as well?
- 53:05SPEAKER_01: No, no, he's like he's a different he's a different alien altogether who has been hunted by manhunters.
- 53:10SPEAKER_03: By manhunters.
- 53:11SPEAKER_03: And do manhunters specifically like so there's the Martian Manhunter, right?
- 53:16SPEAKER_03: If they're home, like uh if they're home to a planet, like maybe I don't know, is the Martian Manhunter like not a great dude on his planet, but then like he comes to Earth and he's a nice guy?
- 53:27SPEAKER_03: Like, is there something about the planet they're tied to that leads them to take advantage of those people more than say of other planets?
- 53:35SPEAKER_03: Because they seem to be so powerful that I don't understand why they can't just zip around and do whatever they want.
- 53:41SPEAKER_01: I think it's more of a case of like Krypton, like there's not a lot of them left.
- 53:44SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, d didn't John Jones lose his family.
- 53:47SPEAKER_02: Well, what was it?
- 53:48SPEAKER_02: Was it a sickness?
- 53:50SPEAKER_01: I believe it was a sickness, yeah.
- 53:52SPEAKER_01: But I think it was like it was Mars as the it's too on the nose that that's you know, like artists.
- 54:00SPEAKER_02: They just yeah, they just call him manhunters in the show, but I I mean I I call him Martian Manhunter because that that's literally like that.
- 54:08SPEAKER_02: That's what uh John Jones is called as the Martian Manhunter.
- 54:11SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 54:11SPEAKER_03: So I thought that there were like, you know, there was the Martian Manhunter, and then there's the Uranus Manhunter, and there's the Jupiter Manhunter or something.
- 54:20SPEAKER_01: I think it was it's kind of like Superman is the Krypton.
- 54:27SPEAKER_02: Kryptonian Jesus or something.
- 54:30SPEAKER_01: Basically.
- 54:30SPEAKER_03: He's like Jim Caveasel.
- 54:32SPEAKER_01: I do think that the mythology that James Gunn and Peter Safran are building with the DCU is interesting.
- 54:41SPEAKER_01: You know, like they're not doing necessarily the easy thing and just making everything as realistic as possible.
- 54:51SPEAKER_01: You know, I think that that is admirable and a better service to the the comic history than what we could have had.
- 55:01SPEAKER_01: So a lot of people are very curious about whether like how they're going to incorporate Batman into this universe.
- 55:06SPEAKER_01: And they they do reference the the guy in Gotham in this series.
- 55:11SPEAKER_01: Carrie too.
- 55:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:13SPEAKER_01: Carrie's from Gotham.
- 55:14SPEAKER_03: She's what's her name?
- 55:15SPEAKER_03: Her last name is uh Kane, right?
- 55:17SPEAKER_03: So she's from uh the there's a possibility that she could have she's uh Batwoman, Carrie Kane, I think it's uh her name is from Gotham, right?
- 55:27SPEAKER_03: So there's like like it's like she escaped, but the Kane I think the Canes were a fairly well-to-do family that may have been in line with either the Moronis or the Falcones.
- 55:39SPEAKER_03: I can't remember that exactly, but I I'm pretty sure I'm I'm big into the Penguin series, so I've been watching that.
- 55:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, the the actress who played Carrie was also big into the Penguin series because she modeled her own accent based off of like someone who's been away from Gotham for about 10 years.
- 55:59SPEAKER_01: And it actually does come through.
- 56:01SPEAKER_01: As soon as I heard that she's she modeled herself after like uh like how people were talking about in in Penguin, it was fascinating.
- 56:09SPEAKER_01: Now, Penguin is technically not the same universe as the DCU.
- 56:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
- 56:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of people who want that Batman to be part of the DCU.
- 56:22SPEAKER_01: I'm one of those people who want it to be completely separate, but I appreciate the realism that like she brought to the role.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: Like, I want to sound like these people who live in Gotham, and this is the most recent iteration of Gotham that we have.
- 56:36SPEAKER_03: So for me, isn't her brother in the Batman movie?
- 56:40SPEAKER_03: There's a I think she has an act, uh, she's a brother who's an actor who's like the actual character.
- 56:46SPEAKER_03: Like the detective.
- 56:47SPEAKER_03: No, I think like she's like I'm I mean, I'll come back to that.
- 56:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, look it up.
- 56:51SPEAKER_01: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 56:52SPEAKER_01: Anyway, there's a lot that happens in this series.
- 56:54SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I think we've kind of only just brushed the surface of like what it was about, but I just want to say that I think that making it as grounded as possible into a rural town instead of making it an intergalactic like space opera, basically, is such a choice.
- 57:15SPEAKER_01: And it's a very James Gunn choice because coming from someone who's made Guardians of the Galaxy, he could have very easily said, no, we're gonna put this in space, we're gonna send them to Oa, we're gonna like show all the Guardians, we're gonna show the Green Lantern core.
- 57:29SPEAKER_01: We didn't get any of that.
- 57:31SPEAKER_01: We got maybe one more Green Lantern past that point, which was Sinestro, who wasn't even a Green Lantern at that point.
- 57:37SPEAKER_01: And I loved it.
- 57:39SPEAKER_01: I think it was such a brilliant choice, like not making the show.
- 57:44SPEAKER_01: They wanted to separate it as much as possible from Green Lantern 2011.
- 57:49SPEAKER_01: And actually, they introduced the character that became the villain in the 2011 series, uh Hector Hammond, you know, like the Brainiac guy, the guy with the huge head in the in the 2011 movie.
- 58:01SPEAKER_01: He was just a normal guy who was just like the in-between between uh Zoe and the lanterns.
- 58:08SPEAKER_01: And it is it's such a a bizarre change of pace that they chose for this movie, and I I'm all for it, because they've made something that is entirely different from what anyone would have expected.
- 58:23SPEAKER_01: And they actually showed, like, recently they showcased some of the concept art for the lantern show that could have happened, and it was very much a space show with ten different lanterns all at once, you know, and it would have been fun, I'm sure.
- 58:38SPEAKER_01: It would have been a a good time seeing all those like Kilowag and the Squirrel Lantern, and I love how even like Hal's halogram was like, how was the how was the you know funeral?
- 58:52SPEAKER_01: And he was like questioning how and he he asks about the the planet that is one of the Green Lantern Corps.
- 58:59SPEAKER_01: He's just like, yeah, right, that's a planet.
- 59:05SPEAKER_01: Oh man, I there's something about James Gunn being at the helm of DC that creates a level of uh ridiculousness that is somewhat believable and also just crazy, you know, that that just makes it so enjoyable.
- 59:24SPEAKER_01: Go ahead, Drich.
- 59:26SPEAKER_03: I think that see, I think he gets it, right?
- 59:28SPEAKER_03: We're all growing and aging, right?
- 59:32SPEAKER_03: And obviously there's a you know, some of the audience, you know, the audience is an older audience now, right?
- 59:37SPEAKER_03: And he's writing he's creating content based off of essentially children's comics from years ago.
- 59:46SPEAKER_03: And he's he gives it that little hey yeah, this is a little silly.
- 59:52SPEAKER_03: And I I think that's important.
- 59:54SPEAKER_03: I think that's maybe why lanterns 2011 didn't get the greatest reviews, because it didn't have a little bit of that grit, of that acknowledgement of like, yeah, this is all kind of ridiculous, so we're gonna take some time to to laugh at ourselves, and then we're gonna return to making you love these characters.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I'm picking up what you're putting down.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_01: I'm picking up what you're putting down.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_03: That's why Guardians worked so well.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_03: Not because anybody cared about Groot or Zamora or Gamora sorry, that's a student of mine.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_03: Zamora or Gomorrah.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_03: Uh shout out to Chris if you're listening to the podcast.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_03: No, but seriously, that's what like nobody cared about those characters before that movie came out.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_03: It was because they were genuine, because they were multidimensional.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_03: They weren't just these heroic beings that are almost infallible.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_03: And I think I think he's just found he's found the way for the best presentation of comic book characters that appeal to young audiences and old audiences.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_03: Older, I should say.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_02: Just to let you know, Green Lantern fans are really old because this character was created in 1940.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_01: Alan Scott, not Hal Jordan.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, Alan Scott, but I mean the the actual like Green Lantern like as a character was created in 1940.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_01: What's interesting is that Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, is not part of the Guardian's core.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_01: So he's not part of the Lantern's core.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_01: So he has a magic lantern that is entirely separate from the Green Lantern core of you know the Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_01: It's it's a bizarre DC heritage thing.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_02: You know, like it's basically it's as if Wells Hal Jordan is old too.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_02: What 1959?
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm I'm not I'm not saying that he isn't, but I'm saying like Alan Scott is such a bizarre character, and that that was the original intent for lanterns, the series, was to do a Alan Scott and Hal Jordan series because Alan Scott is such an interesting character because he's not part of the Guardian's core at all.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_01: He just happens to have a magical lantern, plus there's a whole other Green Lantern core on the side.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_01: So like that's the magic of DC comics.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_01: They it they added to the lore at a certain point that kind of like negated certain other lore, but they kept that negated lore, and that's what Alan Scott is, plus Hal Jordan on the side.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_03: Can is the lantern the lightning cable like I I the one thing I don't understand is what recharges the lantern?
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_03: Does that also have to be recharged, or is it just the like I don't I mean if I don't want to the lantern can get the power directly, then can't the ring just get it directly, Guardians?
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_03: Like what's with the lightning cable in the middle?
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_01: Good question.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, that's actually a good question.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_01: And you're right, if the lantern can get it directly, the ring should be able to get it directly.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_01: But that's not the case for whatever reason.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_01: And I will say that it's like a portable battery bank.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_01: Yes, and the battery bank appears to be limitless, at least in terms of our lifespan.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_03: Just because So couldn't they just couldn't Hal always I'm sorry, this is like maybe I just don't understand it, right?
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_03: Like, can't Hal using the power of the ring just always have the freaking land like can't he shrink the lantern into like pocket size and then he always has it on his on himself?
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_03: Like, why does he have to hide it somewhere?
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_01: I mean uh I don't think he has the that ability.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_01: He can create constructs with the ring, he can't change the nature of reality with the ring.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_01: Um, okay.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_03: Alright, so that's my fault.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_03: No.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_03: That's my misinterpret.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_03: You're good, you're good.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_03: And then the last lantern that Sinestro so when John finally does recharge the lantern, it has that pardon me if I sound ill-educated, but that Japanese style of repairing things with gold.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_03: So that's the lantern that he recharges from, right?
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_01: That is the lantern.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_03: Like the one that was Sinestro made that was filled with that kind of fear gas, no?
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_03: So like is that is his why didn't his ring turn I thought the ring was gonna turn yellow, is I guess my question.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_03: Like, why did it just charge up green?
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_01: You're talking about Kinsugi, which is the you know, like you break something and you repair it with gold filament.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_01: We don't I I thought the same thing.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_01: Like it because he he mentions that there was some fear locked within that lantern.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_01: That was like what he created it with.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_01: And ultimately his oath, too, had a little bit of self-doubt in it, you know.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_01: Like I forget exactly the wording of uh John Stewart's oath, but it wasn't the typical Green Lantern oath.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_01: He chose a different oath that uh allowed fear into fearlessness.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_01: So it's interesting, and I don't think there's a a solid answer for what you're asking, but obviously there's more courage and willpower than there is fear in in terms of Jon Stewart's oath and recharging the ring and everything.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it's an interesting series, man.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_01: It's a weird one, but I I really like it.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_02: What about John's ability to uh manifest things with the ring and then being able to take off the ring and like maintaining focus to keep the whatever it was that he constructed, like that bird, the fact that he was able to take off the ring and howl's like consciousness like maintain like he was able to maintain it without the ring.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_02: So what what'd you think about that?
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_01: Incredible.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_01: Incredible.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_01: When he first of all, when he took off the ring, when he was unconscious and he woke up from his consciousness and the bird was still there.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_01: I didn't understand because that level of Green Lantern power is just as far as I'm aware, beyond the character.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_01: You know, like it's uh like it's not impossible, but it's way above Hal Jordan levels.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_01: So when Hal's Halogram mentions the fact that, you know, how are you doing that without wearing the ring, you know, that's really impressive.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_01: Like there's a handful of Green Lanterns that can do that, and I'm not one of them.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_01: He 100% bel like is is telling the truth in that instance.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_01: Like he is deeply impressed with uh Jon Stewart in that moment.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_01: And I that's why that's why I'm so like Hal has to be a jaded character, because like his Halligram, which is like 10 years old or at this point, is a nice guy.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_01: For whatever reason, Hal becomes a very jaded person in his old age as he's being replaced.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_01: And it's it's an interesting change of pace, and I really appreciate his uh his other half, you know.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_01: Like I don't know.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_01: I think it's I think it's cool.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_01: So when Hal or Hal's Hologram is telling him that like what he's doing is exceptional, he's 100% sincere in that instance because that doesn't happen.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_03: That's pretty cool.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_03: I didn't I mean the show, like you said, the hologram kind of explained that a little bit, but I didn't you know when he first did it, I didn't think it was something that was that out of the ordinary, I guess.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_03: So I thought the show did a really good job of kind of highlighting how important that was.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_01: Did we have anything else we wanted to say, or did we cover everything?
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_03: How did you guys feel about uh naked drawing?
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_03: Macon when Macon uh forces Jon Stewart to I uh I was dying.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_03: I was just like uh I was like, where is this show going?
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_03: I'm like, why does he have to sketch this man in the nude?
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_03: This is kind of weird.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_01: Macon was uh on something else because at that point we assumed he was the uh he was the manhunter and he was just on a power trip, but he wasn't even the manhunter.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he was just in proximity and like he was bossing around the manhunter at that moment.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_01: You know, like he was telling his wife what to do, you know, like you know you know honey, you should stay here too.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_01: Like, okay, that's weird.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, watching the scene like I watched it two times as I always do.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_03: Watching it the second time, knowing that Zoe's the Manhunter, is just kind of makes Macon so much more of a ridiculous character.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_01: Gotta make Macon a ridiculous character.
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_01: Um, it is just a ridiculous like concept that Jon Stewart just becomes embroiled in a literal sexual manner with the uh major antagonist of the antagonist plus protagonist of the town.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_01: It's a very confusing relationship she has with the town.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_02: Prantagonist.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_01: Prantagonist, there we go.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_01: And then Macon finds out somehow, like really Zoe must have been like, oh yeah, I did that with him.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_01: I was very confused how quickly he found out.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_01: But man, I really enjoyed this show.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_01: I'm sad that it's over.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_01: Uh it's one of those, like, you know, it's a it's a very adult show.
- 1:09:04SPEAKER_01: It's it's very not ex it's entirely not what I expected from a lantern series.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_01: It's not an it's not anything what I expected from DC.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_01: Coming from Peacemaker and maybe Creature Commandos, I would have guessed something like this.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_01: But not uh Justice League level character.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_01: It's completely out of left field.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_01: And it's something Marvel would have never done.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_01: And that's that's the number one thing that I appreciate.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_01: Marvel, in all its glory, would have never done this in in the next 20 years, Marvel will never do this.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying it right now.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_01: They will never do this to one of their main characters.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_01: And I appreciate that.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_02: They might need to.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_01: They might, but they're not gonna.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_02: I'm telling you, they're not gonna do it.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_02: I guess you know that that's the benefit that the that what was it, just DCU now?
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_02: It's not DCE right now, right?
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_02: It's just DCU.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_02: I guess it's the benefit that they have because like let's be honest, a lot of people aren't expecting much from you know.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_02: We've been burned by the DCEU.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_02: I mean the the Schneiderverse is entertaining, but like when you when you put it next to what Marvel was putting out at the time, you're like, there's no comparison here.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_02: Like even even though it and and like it almost seemed like it and it felt like the DC EU was desperate to capture that same magic.
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_02: I think that James Gunn, like helming it was a good idea because he found he just finds ways to take unknown or just deep cuts in general and making them into just putting them on the screen.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_02: And it's I mean, like like like we said, Guardians of the Galaxy, the fact that he decided to bring Guy Gardner as our as our literal like the first Green Lantern that we see.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_02: Now now we finally got Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart, but the actual like you know full-fledged Green Lantern is Guy Gardner.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_02: It's insane.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_02: But only I feel like it's very much so a James Gunn thing, and I feel like he's like one of the very few people who could pull something like that off.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_02: And yeah, I I just think that yeah, I think that there wasn't a certain expectation, like you said, you're you're thinking like a they could have easily done it in space, and I feel like James Gunn was like, that's too easy.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_02: Let's do a different way.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_01: I I also find that the story that they were telling about Jon Stewart's family, the idea of not being afraid, him hating Hell to his core, you know, like he ruined his father's life, he ruined his own life in the military, was fascinating.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_01: It was deeply interesting.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_01: And that did not change John's character.
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_01: You know, like he was very much a military man to the point where, like, you know, even if he didn't like this guy at all, if he hated this character, he would still defer to him as, you know, his commanding officer or whatever it was.
- 1:12:10SPEAKER_01: And I I respect that.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_01: I think that that's such a fascinating story.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_01: And also the idea that his father was the original intent before Hal Jordan got the call for the Green Lantern Corps.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_01: The idea that his father was like pulled out of bed and be like, Are you afraid?
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_01: And like, yeah, hell yeah, I'm afraid.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_01: Leave me alone.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_01: Like, I get it.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_01: I would be I'd be terrified if I was floating in bed by a green light.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_03: Do you think that Jon Stewart's mom is possibly the worst human ever?
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_03: Because the father seems to have trepidation along the way, and the mom's just like you're such an embarrassing human.
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_01: It's weird because you you grow to hate the father, like at the early stages of the series, and then you realize wait, the mom is the one who's really must be.
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_03: It's not the father, guys.
- 1:12:57SPEAKER_03: It's always the mom.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_03: Okay, it's ne the dad's never the real bad guy.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_03: It's always the mom.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_01: I've been telling my son this since he was born.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_02: It's it it's a it definitely is insane because I was thinking that same thing that the dad initially the dad did seem like he was the bad parent, but there was, yeah, like when they were when the mom was wanting him to do all this stuff, there were some r reservations.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_02: Like, are you serious?
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_01: The father did hate Hal Jordan.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_01: There was a reason he didn't want them to watch a TV special about the Green Lantern.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_01: So that was legitimate, but like the overall structure of his childhood, you know, like shooting an apple off of his head, dude.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_01: That was his mom.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_01: That was insane.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_01: So was his mom.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_02: But he did that.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_02: He he was like, he shot the and what was insane to me was like, you know, like he get he gets caught, John gets caught caught watching the Hal Jordan special, and then like right after he he gets the apple shot off his head, his dad's like uh puts his arm around him, like, alright, let's go eat a burger.
- 1:14:01SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm like, wait, what?
- 1:14:03SPEAKER_03: I said this is insane.
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_03: I did love the story that he's he became a vegan because like he associated like the burger with like you know the reward for that and he didn't like it.
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_03: But then like I like that he went back to eating meat.
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_03: You know, he's like, nah, like I'm cool with it now.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_03: Like now I can have my burgers.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_03: Uh enough time like as a as as somebody who could not even fathom being a vegan, right?
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, normally you have like the story, you know, someone becomes a vegan and they're healthier, blah blah blah.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_03: I like that in this story, it's one of the few stories in all of media that I've ever encountered that somebody becomes a vegan and then it's like, nah, man, I'm I'm gonna go back to my burgers.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_01: Like, I I I don't know.
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_01: I do I do love the theory of you know, like breaking away from the topic at hand.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_01: I do love the videos of like people who haven't had like meat in like 10 years trying a burger and they're just like they just like oh my god, it's so good.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_01: You know, like every time bad for them, every time for them.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_01: But anyway, going back to John, I do think, you know, like it was interesting because we did not see we had at up until that point, we did not see the mother in the modern day.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_01: So when it came to the scene where John shot the apple off of his mother's head, we did not know if she was alive past that point.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_01: We don't and that I in my head I was like, oh crap, he's about to kill his mom.
- 1:15:28SPEAKER_01: And that's his origin story.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, that's dark.
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_01: I'm happy that didn't happen.
- 1:15:34SPEAKER_01: But like it was definitely written to a point where like that could have happened, you know, like we didn't know if the mother was alive past 26, or you know, 2006, whatever it was.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_01: But anyway, what do we think about this series ultimately?
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_01: Like, what is our what are our final thoughts, Anthony?
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_01: I'll I'll start with you.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_02: I enjoyed it.
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_02: I thought it was an interesting take.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_02: I do like what we did get of the green, like we didn't really like talk too much of like the Green Lantern, like the power of like the ring, like what we did get with like the manifestation and some of the stuff like how Jordan like creating those like shields when he was like covering the the those like lasers, the the hammer of dawn from Gears of War coming down.
- 1:16:21SPEAKER_02: And uh and so like he was creating those shields, like there's a lot of like really, really like cool moments that we had seen uh Hal Jordan using uh the ring.
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_02: And uh and and Jon Stewart too, like he he had some cool moments also.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_02: I would say that like I said, like I I know a couple people who weren't big fans of this show just because of like the changes in the the characters of like Jon Stewart and Hal Jordan.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_02: So I kind of understand that, but in the end for me, I just think that like the the DCU needed to inject itself with something fresh, something new, and I feel like the characters were enough of themselves that it made it believable that this was Jon Stewart and this was Hal Jordan.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_03: Rich, final thoughts?
- 1:17:11SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, like I said a couple times during the show, I really went into this not completely blind, I knew the oath by heart, and I knew of the lantern core and things like that, and I knew, you know, a little bit about Guy Gardner, but I uh I just kind of went into this like a trustful.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_03: Like I uh I closed my eyes and I just fell back.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_03: I didn't and I think it was really cool for me, you guys know I get very nitpicky about stuff, especially like when it's translated from one medium to another.
- 1:17:41SPEAKER_03: I can get like irritated that this was left out and like uh like Anthony's talking about the people who are irritated.
- 1:17:46SPEAKER_03: That would be me if this was like a Wolverine thing, maybe.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_03: But it's not.
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_03: It's it and as somebody who's not deeply invested in the lore, I really like this show.
- 1:17:56SPEAKER_03: I thought that the Hal character, the actor, was fantastic.
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_03: I thought that the Jon Stewart character uh and the actor were fantastic.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_03: Uh I I I really thought the casting was great.
- 1:18:07SPEAKER_03: I thought that they didn't skimp on the budget.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_03: I never felt like the the the CGI or anything like that was poorly done.
- 1:18:16SPEAKER_03: I just think that from every aspect, this is a really well done show.
- 1:18:21SPEAKER_03: And if you haven't seen it yet, and despite our spoilers, go watch it.
- 1:18:25SPEAKER_03: I mean it's a it's a it's a really fun time.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_03: I mean okay, it's depressing and stuff like that, right?
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_03: It's not I'm sorry, it's not uplifting.
- 1:18:32SPEAKER_03: But I think it's a really interesting watch, and I think that it's worth your time.
- 1:18:37SPEAKER_01: I also really like the actor for Hal Jordan, and I just want to say I've been a big fan of him ever since Godzilla, King of the Monsters.
- 1:18:47SPEAKER_01: He played Maddie's father.
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_01: He plays he plays the father in that in that Trifecta.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_01: And I think he does a good job.
- 1:18:56SPEAKER_01: He does an even better job with lanterns, I will admit.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_01: He just has more meat on the bone to chew from.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_01: And man, what a fantastic casting choice for this series.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_01: Like Kal Chandler in this series is just a stunning choice because he's not only endearing, but he's also someone you can easily hate in an instant.
- 1:19:19SPEAKER_01: You know, it's it's such a fascinating you hate him one instant and you're like, yeah, that's my guy.
- 1:19:25SPEAKER_01: Next instant.
- 1:19:25SPEAKER_01: You know, it's just it's one of those just one of those characters.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_01: And um, I'm amazed.
- 1:19:30SPEAKER_01: Like, I I never would have expected a Hal Jordan series like this.
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_01: And I'm not discounting the idea that Hal Jordan can return, you know.
- 1:19:40SPEAKER_01: Like it we understand that he has a consciousness somewhere in the ring, probably it's gone by now, but and that's probably for the best, you know, like if they don't bring him back.
- 1:19:49SPEAKER_01: But they could very easily bring the consciousness of Hal Jordan back for an episode or two in a season two, and I I would love that.
- 1:19:58SPEAKER_01: I would absolutely love that.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_01: And I don't doubt that they will try to do something like that moving forward.
- 1:20:03SPEAKER_01: But yeah, guys, this uh this was a fantastic series.
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_01: It's up there with some of the other like Damon Landeloff shows like the Watchmen series that came out a couple years ago.
- 1:20:17SPEAKER_01: Secret Wars.
- 1:20:18SPEAKER_01: I think you're talking about Secret Invasion, perhaps?
- 1:20:21SPEAKER_03: Oh, yes, that's what it meant.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_01: Secret Wars has not come out yet.
- 1:20:24SPEAKER_03: Um I was trying to be terrible, annoying, and trolly, and I uh I picked the wrong thing.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_03: So way to go, Rich.
- 1:20:30SPEAKER_03: Nice job.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_01: Well, you got me second-guessing my own mental state, so you you did it.
- 1:20:35SPEAKER_01: You fit you you got the job done.
- 1:20:37SPEAKER_01: Next week, we are covering Mortal Kombat Annihilation or Mortal Kombat 2, the the other 90s Paul W.
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_01: S.
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_01: Anderson film.
- 1:20:46SPEAKER_01: Guys, thank you so much for listening to us here for episode 181.
- 1:20:49SPEAKER_01: We will hear from you, or you will hear from us rather, next week.
- 1:20:53SPEAKER_01: Bye.
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_02: Goodbye, y'all.
