- 2:14Let's get started on this journey from pain to purpose.
- 2:17Let's give veterans a voice through military broadcast talk.
- 2:22Hey, how are y'all? Today is Saturday, July 12th,
- 2:30the year of our Lord 2025 and I am recording today from McDaniel
- 2:35College here in Westminster, MD and I'm in the green room of the
- 2:43theater. It's pretty cool being live on
- 2:48set, if you will. I have had a fabulous time this
- 2:53past week expanding my boundaries on things.
- 2:59I'm just stretching, stretching my wings and learning some new
- 3:04stuff, including playing the guitar.
- 3:06No, I didn't bring the guitar in with me to do the show.
- 3:11I already had enough to carry and I've been carrying it all
- 3:13week long, so maybe I will break it out on a different show when
- 3:18I've had a little bit more practice.
- 3:22And so I think we're going to have a pretty neat show today.
- 3:28Like I said, I'm live here at Westmin.
- 3:33What am I saying? McDaniel College in Westminster,
- 3:38MD And so Jose is going to be popping.
- 3:43His show just finished. He will be popping over and
- 3:47we're going to Co host for a little bit because we know quite
- 3:51a few people together. This is a pretty how do I say
- 3:57it? It's a it's an adult camp.
- 3:59And who knew that adult camps existed?
- 4:02I, for one, really did not, not from this side of things
- 4:07anyways. You know, I've gone to some
- 4:10veteran events, been involved with a, you know, a variety of
- 4:16nonprofits. So this is kind of a different
- 4:18nonprofit, but they collaborate with an organization called
- 4:23Common Ground and it's here at at this college.
- 4:28I'm not sure how many other colleges do it throughout the
- 4:32country. So back in December, I was
- 4:36invited by Jose connect me with the leadership here to help be a
- 4:42presenter for the women Veterans program.
- 4:45And of course, I was happy to accept and, you know, deliver,
- 4:52deliver some, I want to say training.
- 4:55It's not really training. It's really it's, you know, so
- 4:59this part of the the better it's called Veterans Initiative.
- 5:03And that's really pretty key for I think it's really focused on
- 5:10integration, not just with not just with this school
- 5:16environment, if you will, but also with other veterans and
- 5:21civilians and in a variety of different classes.
- 5:24So the different classes that they've offered have been music
- 5:27inclined. So I took, I took beginning
- 5:30guitar and believe me, I'm very beginner and, and I'll touch on
- 5:36that here in a couple minutes. And then there's banjo, there's
- 5:39mandolin, there's harmonica, there's ukulele, probably other
- 5:47instruments. I don't even know that they had
- 5:49here. Probably, I think violin.
- 5:52Let's see, they had some art classes, stained glass and I'll
- 5:58be setting up a show at a different time for the stained
- 6:02glass people. And then there's we'll see.
- 6:08I think I saw a dugout canoe making.
- 6:11There was bonsai tree pruning and stuff like that.
- 6:17There's, let's see, we had both the veterans interactive, which
- 6:21is Coed and then we had the class that I was leading was for
- 6:27the women's, women veterans. There's common ground, which is
- 6:32bringing different speakers and from the community that can talk
- 6:38a variety of topics. One of the speakers we had was
- 6:41from Palestine. So I thought that was very
- 6:44interesting that she grew up in Palestine, but she's an American
- 6:48and, and, and what her journey has been with, you know, the
- 6:57travels, not just the travels, but some of the trials going on
- 7:03in the Palestine area and you know, the community that's
- 7:06involved there. Let's see.
- 7:08I'm trying to think of some of the other classes. 01 of the
- 7:16classes that I was also in was also there was a film class, you
- 7:23know, just discussing filmmaking and looking at different
- 7:26samples. So I did get to preview, preview
- 7:33my film, my documentary From Pain to Purpose, her second
- 7:37service story with the audience there.
- 7:41And there was another filmmaker that presented their film too.
- 7:46And oh, there was golf and so variety of different topics that
- 7:54anybody could attend and, you know, and we stayed in the dorm.
- 7:59So that was pretty cool staying in the dorms all week long.
- 8:03I had the dining facility that we could go and eat at.
- 8:10Let's see. But I, you know, of course I'm
- 8:12on my diet this week and I had to had to kind of navigate hi,
- 8:20hi you. Are you going to jump on the
- 8:24show? What's that?
- 8:25I'm live on? I'm live on radio.
- 8:28You want to come and say hi to the audience?
- 8:31No, I'm not. Part of the show.
- 8:34OK. Maria, do you need so sorry.
- 8:38We have some people coming and going and they are getting ready
- 8:43for getting ready for a reception in the other room
- 8:48because there's going to be a big veterans interactive concert
- 8:51tonight and Josh Izel is going to be popping in as a drop in
- 8:57guest here in a little while when he gets in.
- 9:00And let's see who else you know. Hopefully there'll be some other
- 9:05pop in guests as well. There are quite a few veterans
- 9:08who are former students that are part of Common Ground and they
- 9:15support what Common Ground is doing and they, so they've been
- 9:19doing, you know, it's interesting to learn what
- 9:24different communities do. So Common Ground has been around
- 9:27for 30 years, and it was started by some former students and
- 9:32quite of them, a few of them very musically inclined.
- 9:37And it's going to be a great show tonight.
- 9:39So I'll, you know, when the show ends at 7, when my show here
- 9:44ends at 7:00, I'll be going upstairs and watching the
- 9:49concert tonight. And I'm pretty excited.
- 9:53It's it's just neat to see how things have evolved with this
- 9:59organization. Get somebody else.
- 10:01Oh, OK. Oh, OK.
- 10:03All right, my roommate popped outside the door there.
- 10:09So you're kind of in the. I know.
- 10:16Yeah. So that's what I get for being
- 10:22in the green room. But it we tried to put it in the
- 10:24best place we could to be able to have the show tonight.
- 10:30So anyways, it's fun. I'm trying to think of what
- 10:35else? Oh, so the young girl that I was
- 10:38talking to in the background, so she was one of my suite mates
- 10:43and the guy that was just saying something to he that's her
- 10:47grandfather. So they have this neat program.
- 10:51Never. It's the first time I've ever
- 10:53seen something like this where a lot of these are grandparents.
- 10:56Some of them are going to be parents and they have their kids
- 11:01or grandkids are in the youth camp version going through very
- 11:07similar classes. Some of it is music, some of
- 11:11it's art. So you know, what a neat, I want
- 11:17to say generational way of having a camp and being able to
- 11:22have, you know, have have have these generations that so this
- 11:31young lady, she was in her own room right across the offer me.
- 11:35Her grandfather was in the next room and bye.
- 11:41And so that was kind of cool to be able to see that she's, you
- 11:48know, being able to eat with him and spend quality time with her
- 11:52grandfather while he's in his classes and, you know,
- 11:55activities. And she was in her art classes
- 12:01and music classes. They performed last night.
- 12:03So it was really exciting to get to see the youth get up there.
- 12:08There was about 10 of them. Jose had two of his grandkids up
- 12:13there and they were singing and one little boy got to play the
- 12:17harmonica in front of the whole crowd in the audience.
- 12:20So it's that same, same, the same.
- 12:27What's my trying to think? I'm trying to think of the
- 12:29upstairs. It's the same hall where y'all
- 12:31watched me sing the song that my class created.
- 12:34So you know, that was pretty neat.
- 12:37So let me go ahead and talk about that.
- 12:39That was one of my class. It was, was a songwriting class.
- 12:43So we all we started working on our own individual song.
- 12:50He put us through some prompting to help us be able to start
- 12:57crafting, you know, writing a song.
- 12:59And where do where do you start? Well, you, you it's really going
- 13:03to start with you and whatever your topic is that you're
- 13:06wanting to discuss. But typically it's going to it's
- 13:09got to have that beginning, right?
- 13:10It's going to have some kind of a family in here and it's going
- 13:15to have a beginning. It starts with you, whatever it
- 13:18is that you're wanting to sing about.
- 13:19Yeah, you do an interesting search.
- 13:22So I was on, you know, one of the music apps and you can
- 13:28Google, you know, Google on their search on their folk, folk
- 13:32songs. And it's a interesting to see
- 13:35the different types of topics that might pop up.
- 13:39I think there was one even about refrigerators, which is kind of
- 13:44silly, right? But if you think about it, I
- 13:46mean, you can pretty much think about anything and just find
- 13:52whatever joy or crankiness that you want to out of it and sing
- 13:57about it. It's you know, you could sing
- 14:00about sitting around a fire and just enjoying the view and the
- 14:04music that the song is, you know, the music that the fire
- 14:08makes, you know, with the crackling, that could be a song.
- 14:10So it really can be just about anything and let it occur, right
- 14:17Some that's the way our instructor talked about it was
- 14:22the song can just occur. So I think, you know, I made we
- 14:28performed that song last night that we created as a group and
- 14:32that was fun as a collaboration. Haven't ever done anything like
- 14:36that before. So that was really kind of
- 14:38empowering to not only finish the song, but then get up there
- 14:42and be able to perform it. And then I have a song that I am
- 14:47writing, which was kind of what I wanted to do it anyways, but I
- 14:52just didn't know where to begin compared to writing a book.
- 14:56And, you know, you just start writing it in as well and
- 14:59editing and editing and everything.
- 15:00So, yeah, you know, it's just kind of neat to explore these
- 15:05different things. And I thought the idea of just,
- 15:10you know, even taking the guitar class, since I have not ever
- 15:13picked up a guitar before, really, other than, oh, it's
- 15:17dad's guitar. Let me pluck hot in a little
- 15:19bit. But I didn't really know
- 15:21anything about chords. What am I trying to play?
- 15:24And now I have a little bit better foundation to, you know,
- 15:27start, you know, learning some more.
- 15:30So anyways, I am going to go ahead and play a song and let's
- 15:34see. I really like Die Tired, so I
- 15:37think I'm going to go ahead and play them.
- 15:39And this is the need to feed. So we'll be back after this
- 15:42song. Oh.
- 17:41Hey, what's going on? What happens?
- 17:43When you hit a button up. Sorry.
- 17:47As it happens. Stopped it mid song
- 17:50accidentally. We're just looking at some of
- 17:52the changes. Changes in stream yard.
- 17:57Jose, join me. What's?
- 17:59Up people how you doing if you don't know you better ask
- 18:01somebody glad to be here with my girl Eva my battle right that's
- 18:04right that's right that's right we've.
- 18:05Had a good time this week. We have.
- 18:08We have. It's been.
- 18:09It's been stupendous. Yeah.
- 18:11And now that I got plenty of time, I can, you know, in fact,
- 18:14next year we got even better stuff, don't we even?
- 18:16Yeah, we. Got I don't know, you talked
- 18:17about that. No, I haven't really talked
- 18:20about, you know, Yeah, because I was covering what I've been
- 18:23doing all week long and writing a song, you know, we performed
- 18:28it last night. And it was good for.
- 18:31Being the photographer. It was so much fun.
- 18:34I got this out a little bit in the class and just seeing the
- 18:37magic happen from a couple of words or song.
- 18:40What was it? What was his name?
- 18:43The constructor. Oh, Bob.
- 18:44Bob, Bob, yeah. Bob Bob Lucas is amazing looking
- 18:48up. Apparently he's some of the bigs
- 18:52on stage are singing his song. So this was not just a you know,
- 19:00nothing burger song, even though the I The funny thing is that,
- 19:05well, no, we get this fly in here.
- 19:06It's attacking us. I must smoke it.
- 19:08It's the. It's the perfect.
- 19:09Yeah, yes. Absolutely so.
- 19:12So apparently there are 700 songs with the title of Common
- 19:17Ground. So this was Common Ground 70.
- 19:20One. That's right, That's right.
- 19:22Version 2.0. We got this.
- 19:24Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I would tell you that, you
- 19:27know, having even here and and some of the things we'll be
- 19:31doing hopefully next year, I bring with this what's crazy, I
- 19:34bring my kids here and I used to when I used to teach here ROTC
- 19:39and then my kids came here, they grew up and now my grandkids
- 19:42were singing last. Night, I know that was amazing.
- 19:46That was amazing. And, you know, it's really back
- 19:50back here. I mean, we're in the theater
- 19:52room. It's pretty cool.
- 19:53Yeah, we're in the green room and there's.
- 19:55So many different little. Things in here, I mean, even
- 19:59this chair looks like it was designed for Alice in
- 20:02Wonderland. I haven't turned it around, but
- 20:05there's prop stuff in here. It's all.
- 20:07Really unique, got a skull in his side.
- 20:12But yeah, but no, it's been, it's been stupendous having Eva
- 20:15here and some of the other veterans as a veteran
- 20:17initiative. When did when did you first
- 20:20come? 2003.
- 20:21Yeah. 2003 because and the first time I came here, it was as a
- 20:28veteran with some issues before I got diagnosed.
- 20:31But then after a while I really got into the groove of it and
- 20:34just OK. Like I learned how to play
- 20:35guitar, you know, and meeting people from all over the world,
- 20:39you know, we have people from Ireland and just how to play.
- 20:42The because I heard that it was much.
- 20:45Different it was a few years ago.
- 20:47And they changed it. I think part of it changed
- 20:50because of some of the syllabus requirements or.
- 20:53Something that. To get the credits, yeah,
- 20:57college credits. So some of that changed, but I
- 21:01think what we're looking at doing next year for the women
- 21:04veterans program is going to be pretty stupendous it.
- 21:07Is to Oh my God, because we know.
- 21:09Lots of people that we can bring in a speaker.
- 21:12So, you know, if you're in the DC Maryland area and want to
- 21:18participate. I was even talking to my friend
- 21:21Denise and see if we can. So she's, you know, maybe
- 21:25hopefully I was talking with her today.
- 21:28She's been helping out with this, all the Gulf War study
- 21:31stuff and can kind of talk. About things from.
- 21:33The health perspective. Absolutely, Absolutely.
- 21:36Even though she lives in in Colorado that maybe we could do
- 21:41her as a remote. Zoom in.
- 21:43That would be great. We.
- 21:44Could do her as a remote in and since it's just for an hour.
- 21:49So I think there's some opportunities like that to be
- 21:52able to talk to women veterans and not talk to but talk with
- 21:58and different topics. And you know, I have a friend
- 22:03that is over at the women's memorial that we could come in
- 22:07she's an ambassador and see if she'd come in.
- 22:10I'm sure she'd be happy to talk. And so if this is something that
- 22:15you're interested in and want to be able to do this, neat.
- 22:19I call it an adult camp. It is.
- 22:22It is with, yeah, that little camp with Yeah, yeah, with long
- 22:25leashes like they used to put your kids on.
- 22:27But. Yeah, but you know.
- 22:28It's really nice. It's neat, but it's it's their
- 22:31full days. They're if you know bottle of
- 22:33mine is a devil's playground. There is not any time in the day
- 22:37to really have an idle mind because the first class starts
- 22:43at 9. You they have the chow hall, you
- 22:45know, the dining facility is so bad.
- 22:49So they have the dining facility opens up at 7:45.
- 22:52First class is at 9. Obviously you don't have to sign
- 22:55up for, you know, all right, right.
- 22:57There are five classes that you can take.
- 22:59They're an hour and 15 minutes long and a decent sized lunch
- 23:03and. Then every night don't they have
- 23:05we have a. Yeah, so so actually.
- 23:09But they have that Angel choir. I didn't participate in that.
- 23:13They have an Angel choir that you can, if you think that you
- 23:17can sing. And probably I should have, I
- 23:19should have signed up for it, but.
- 23:22You were good, Eva. You were good.
- 23:23I got. You I used that time as going
- 23:26and taking my nap so I could go to the concert.
- 23:29I'm used to, you know, I'm used to getting up at 3:30 in the
- 23:33morning and taking the commuter bus, so.
- 23:37My. Sleep schedule has been all off.
- 23:40You know you. You it was up.
- 23:41Harry and Harry. Harry, come here.
- 23:43Come here. Harry, Tell them who you are.
- 23:46We're live. Tell them who you are.
- 23:47Harry, I'm Harry. You're loved.
- 23:49And I have a gig to do, so I need to leave.
- 23:52We'll be watching it. Hi, brother.
- 23:54I see. That's one of one of the guys
- 23:57who plays the guitar. And and also we when we talked
- 24:00about the the for the female veteran.
- 24:02It's open to, You don't have to be a veteran to attend the
- 24:04class, right? So you can, you know, if you're
- 24:06interested in, you don't have to be a female, right?
- 24:09You can be, anybody can attend and we're going to provide
- 24:12education. We do question and answers
- 24:15something so you can leave with. So yeah, it's not just for
- 24:17veterans we want to open it to. Every well we have the Veterans
- 24:19Initiative Coed class, we have the women veterans class and
- 24:24then all of these other classes. I mean, even though we have
- 24:27civilians that can attend these classes too, but all the other
- 24:30classes that are offered in common ground are open to any.
- 24:36I mean, there is a fee. Of course there is a fee.
- 24:38Apparently, registration will open up next spring in 2026.
- 24:43So if you're looking for something that's a little
- 24:45different to do with your time and be around a great group of
- 24:50people, you know, it's been phenomenal camaraderie and
- 24:56meeting lots of people, enjoying the music, you know, concerts
- 25:02and, yeah, the jam session concert.
- 25:07Yeah. There's the jam sessions that
- 25:10you go to like midnight and then everybody's like struggling to
- 25:13get to go in the next morning. They say if by Thursday and
- 25:18Friday you're not almost just dragging, you didn't have a good
- 25:21time. So, you know, that's one of the
- 25:22things like, you know, But talk about Dan Collins, the
- 25:25filmmaker. Oh, yeah.
- 25:26I talked briefly about Dan, you know, so he's a filmmaker, I
- 25:32guess. He's done quite a few
- 25:33glassblowing films that, that. Yeah, the the famous, the famous
- 25:39glassblowers who are out there making different.
- 25:45What do I say? They they have, they're bongs,
- 25:48but there's other pieces of art, you know?
- 25:51The one with the guy takes the flower and puts it in that is.
- 25:53Amazing. Oh yeah, that was neat too.
- 25:55That was neat too. And it was just interesting to
- 25:59see that, you know, the documentary and what's his name,
- 26:01though, the guy who was the new, the one who works with Josh
- 26:05Simi? Simi.
- 26:06And he did a, he did a Remember, he was a first director.
- 26:09Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's an assistant director and
- 26:11so he's took it. He's taking over the program, so
- 26:15we got a good taste of his style.
- 26:17Very fair. Josh Heisel is still
- 26:20participating in the program, but Josh is doing some other
- 26:24stuff too. So, you know, there's, I think
- 26:28in a good way that Sammy coming on is younger, you know, younger
- 26:33generation of veterans getting out.
- 26:36So this will be, you know, good. I think it's a good strategy to,
- 26:41I want to say pivot and be able to open up to other younger
- 26:47veterans getting out and show that, you know, there's
- 26:51something here for you to be able to grasp on and enjoy
- 26:58exploring some things that are, I want to say, you know, that
- 27:04are soothing. I don't have a better word where
- 27:06it's it's an alternative like learning how to play the guitar.
- 27:11And I was interested, you know, in learning how to play the
- 27:14guitar because for as an, you know, from teenager to adult, I
- 27:21was focused on being in the military or being a mother and
- 27:27then being in school and working.
- 27:30And and I'm finally finding some of this extra time to do Eva.
- 27:35Me time. Yeah me time and so yes well,
- 27:41it's not like I don't have other things to do like studying
- 27:43that's OK I'm. Getting.
- 27:47Getting into all these other things, sometimes it's nice to
- 27:50sit there. I've discovered in this process
- 27:54this week to sit there for 30 minutes and distract myself and
- 27:59kind of look at the music and I'm doing something.
- 28:02These sounds are very soothing, right?
- 28:05They help me focus and just enjoy the process of learning
- 28:13something new, even if I'm only perfecting Happy birthday right
- 28:16now and. Yes, yes.
- 28:19I will get there. I will get there.
- 28:22We'll figure out how to have a jam session.
- 28:24Yes, I'll bring my guitar. I remember the first one of the
- 28:27first class, I think guitar took spoken word and that was
- 28:30stupendous because you got a person who you start off that
- 28:33first. We just get in that words and by
- 28:34the end of the week you're doing a poem and spoken word.
- 28:37It's really nice. And you do it in up here, you do
- 28:41it on the stage. So you know they recognize that.
- 28:43And it's really, really, if you want something different that
- 28:46you've done it never done, this is the place to get out of your
- 28:49comfort zone. Or if this is something you've
- 28:51been looking for, but give it a try.
- 28:53And Eva and I will be pushing this once registrations open up.
- 28:57You know you can shoot us an e-mail because, you know, we'll
- 29:00talk more as we get more information about the.
- 29:02Scholarship you. Know we'll get and we'll see how
- 29:04that works, but this scholarships for for veterans,
- 29:07you know, give it a try. But the cool thing is, is guess
- 29:10what? You're not coming here knowing
- 29:12no one because you know, what are you right?
- 29:16And don't worry, you know? So they do their best to make
- 29:20accommodations for people too. We had some people with scooters
- 29:25and were able to get around. There are it there's there's
- 29:30some elevation. We'll check, you know, but so
- 29:33you're going to get some steps in.
- 29:34Don't be afraid of that. But the weather has been very
- 29:37cooperative this week and the classes are, you know, nice.
- 29:43The dorms are pretty. They're dorms, you know, they're
- 29:45nothing, nothing. They're better than many hotels.
- 29:49Oh yes, absolutely. In, in, in Westminster.
- 29:53We have everything. Tell them where you went off the
- 29:54Installation 0. Yeah, SO is nearby.
- 29:58Oh, I went shopping today at the discount mall.
- 30:01Yeah, yeah, yeah, I got some good bargains, not gonna lie.
- 30:05Got some good bargains. So.
- 30:06We got all the big, you know we got.
- 30:07What's that one with the steak place?
- 30:09I'll take the Australian one. What is it?
- 30:11Australian Outback. Outback, Outback in Texas
- 30:15Roadhouse and we have Olive Garden.
- 30:18She got everything here in case you didn't want to here and go
- 30:20out. Yeah, you don't want to.
- 30:21You have options. That's the key is having
- 30:23options. It, it will change you, it will
- 30:26change you by the end of it. There's a lot of discussions
- 30:29that will have, it will challenge you if you wanted to,
- 30:32you know, and The thing is like if I say common ground.
- 30:35Finding I think the biggest thing is you know you're not
- 30:38coming here and let's say you know how to do.
- 30:42Let's say you've never like I, I never played played the guitar
- 30:47before. I know we have basics.
- 30:49Now I can go home and I can keep practicing.
- 30:52I can watch YouTube videos and you know, I know that the VFW
- 30:58that I go to that I'm a member of over in Arlington, they have
- 31:02guitar for vets on Saturdays. Look at that.
- 31:05So I can go over there and now I'm not feel like I'm just brand
- 31:10new amongst amongst all these. Veterans.
- 31:12That's right. That's right.
- 31:14No pressure. But I, you know, the neat thing
- 31:17is even even in the guitar class that I was in this week, I was
- 31:22the newest. I was not holding back the other
- 31:25three people who are very versed at playing guitar because the
- 31:30instructor, Amy, Amy, shout out to Amy Ferriby.
- 31:34So Amy was stupendous. Yeah.
- 31:36Yeah, she, she was able to teach it in a way that even though I
- 31:41was the newest of new guitar players, I wasn't holding back
- 31:46the other players from learning new stuff too.
- 31:49And, you know, now they have these takeaways and some very
- 31:53basics. She's very well educated on
- 31:57classic guitar and she's she's, you know, just phenomenal.
- 32:02But there are all these other classes as well.
- 32:04Yeah, there's some. You don't have to be an expert
- 32:07or know anything about it. They're going to teach you, Eva.
- 32:11The Rug Lady. The rug lady?
- 32:13Oh yeah. What's the name of that?
- 32:15RYA RYA rug. I had never heard of that
- 32:17before, but it was oh. My God, take a class and learn
- 32:20how to make rug so you know how. Remember there is the latchuck
- 32:23thing. Well, this is the old fashioned
- 32:27really needle and canvas and special yarn Ryo rugs.
- 32:35There you go. We were trying to get her on.
- 32:37I don't know. I haven't seen her all week, no.
- 32:39No, but then we have a car, though.
- 32:41I got a car. We do have a car.
- 32:42So she was willing to do that. Yeah, do have her.
- 32:44Car. So.
- 32:45Yeah, so there's a lot that you can do here that's going to
- 32:47stretch, you know, stretch you and, and learn something and
- 32:51you'll leave with something. Meet.
- 32:52Oh my God, you're going to leave you with a lot of friends.
- 32:55You're going to meet some great people.
- 32:56And every instructor you meet here is is they will take the
- 33:00time. They are experts.
- 33:01Yes, they are. They really are.
- 33:03In their fields, you know, like the guy, Guy Davis, who's
- 33:06playing tonight. Guy Davis looking up.
- 33:08Yeah, look. Linda Ronstadt Linda Ronstadt
- 33:12Nephew is a nephew or brother What?
- 33:14Is he nephew? I think nephew, yeah.
- 33:16So Michael Ronstadt, I think is the same.
- 33:20Michael Ronstadt. Did you talk about your your,
- 33:23your roommate, the one that's doing the Dolly Parton?
- 33:26Oh yeah, so he retired 2 days ago.
- 33:28I found out this. Morning.
- 33:30Yeah, he used to work for work with.
- 33:34Dolly Parton, Look at that work with Dolly.
- 33:36Parton. That's amazing.
- 33:37That is just amazing, the amount of people you meet that you
- 33:40would never know what's behind the scenes, how things happen
- 33:43and then the stories you hear, especially at the at the jams.
- 33:46Afterwards and. It's like, yeah, that's what
- 33:48things. Happen.
- 33:49But they are just people too, yeah.
- 33:51That's it. What is what is it?
- 33:52You know what when we come back at 6:33, When we come back,
- 33:56let's talk about what has been your favorite class that you
- 34:00ever took here? Or we can do that.
- 34:02Yeah. So let me, I'm going to go
- 34:05ahead. And mess with that.
- 34:07Like we did before, I know we're going.
- 34:08To let the whole thing play. I don't want my glasses on.
- 34:11I'm sorry. Let me play.
- 34:13How about Mr. Red, White and Blue?
- 34:14OK, copy, Anderson. We'll be right back.
- 37:50Hey, we are back. This is Eva.
- 37:53I'm your host from the Pain to Purpose radio show, and we've
- 37:57got Jose here from the Motivated Mindset classes.
- 38:01Classes back on. Yes, yes, yes.
- 38:05So we are live here today at McDaniel College in Westchester,
- 38:12MD, Westminster. Maryland, but Westchester's
- 38:15close enough. It's good enough for government
- 38:18work. That's right.
- 38:21For government work is good. Westminster, MD.
- 38:24And this has been a cute little town.
- 38:28You know, I, I had my back went out earlier this week.
- 38:32I was pretty miserable and I had a lot of very nice people
- 38:36helping me with my guitar, toting it, you know, to class.
- 38:41And I was fortunate and able to find a massage spot down the
- 38:48street and went and did that during lunch.
- 38:49So, you know, if you're worried about being able to get
- 38:53amenities for things like that, I was able to get an appointment
- 38:57and I got right in during lunch. And that my question before I
- 39:04went to commercial was what has been your favorite class so far
- 39:09and why? Yeah, so I think it was maybe
- 39:112005 when I came back, one of my classes was taking African
- 39:15drumming. And at that time I had my two
- 39:17kids, Jose and Sydney, and we were all taking African
- 39:21drumming. And the reason I liked it
- 39:23because I thought it was just banging on the drums, but
- 39:26there's more to it. You got to use your, this part
- 39:28of your hand and you got to do timing and everything.
- 39:31And then you got to be coordinating with everybody else
- 39:34who's with you. And it was just a it brung
- 39:37everybody together, You know, everybody was working and
- 39:40singing and then we did some dancing, African dancing and
- 39:43that, that whole class. That was probably one of my
- 39:45favorite classes that I really enjoyed.
- 39:47And I made friends with, with the with the instructors and
- 39:50every year they came back. I don't think they're here this
- 39:52year. And that was really nice.
- 39:53But they have drums set up to be a big thing.
- 39:56Maybe, maybe they were here. There's a big thing they said,
- 40:00like there's 50 drums. Wow, there's a whole bunch of
- 40:02drums. Maybe there Yeah, make sure you
- 40:04got your ear plugs you got. And then I that was my favorite
- 40:08class, even that one was yeah, because it was physical, but it
- 40:11was still also mental. You had to pay attention to
- 40:14everything. It was really, really good.
- 40:16But it sounds like it's not just an individual thing.
- 40:18No, it was. It's a team or.
- 40:20Team to work, yes. But you know what I mean?
- 40:23You are hitting it individually, but it's like part of the band.
- 40:27You're still doing it as a team effort, which is a lot of life,
- 40:30what we did in the military. But that reminds me of something
- 40:35that Sammy had talked about when he was, you know, that's who I
- 40:39mentioned him earlier. He's taking over as leading the
- 40:42classes for Veterans Initiative is.
- 40:46So he's an assistant director in the film industry and he saw for
- 40:51him the parallel wells of what he has seen in the hierarchy.
- 41:01A the hierarchy of military ranking is, is very similar to
- 41:09the film industry. And, and when he was talking, I
- 41:12was like, oh, that makes so much sense.
- 41:14It does because a lot of that hierarchy came from the guys
- 41:19that got out and gals, but they got out of World War. 2.
- 41:24World War and War 2, when the film industry was starting and
- 41:27they shifted the people with that rank structure to the film
- 41:32industry and that way it wasn't just chaos putting a film.
- 41:36Together there was order to. It there was order to it with,
- 41:42you know, so that it made sense and things could get done
- 41:45effectively and not just random and you know, like I said, the
- 41:51chaos. Yeah, yeah, organized chaos like
- 41:53we have in a military. I don't know.
- 41:56I think it really depends upon the unit.
- 41:58Right. It really.
- 41:59Depends upon the unit because at the end that you're trying to
- 42:02still get a film done on time, under budget and, you know, be
- 42:08quality just like our military, you know, have been.
- 42:14But that's also the same thing that we experience even in I've
- 42:18been working for the federal. Government.
- 42:19Absolutely. That you know there are still
- 42:23parameters that we're supposed to.
- 42:24Operate. Yeah.
- 42:27It, it was just, I know for me when I first got out, my first
- 42:31job was working on Fort Meade DoD.
- 42:33So it was an easy transition because, you know, DoD is a
- 42:36structure we had I, I knew my place, my roles and what I had
- 42:40to do. But when I came up with a HUD,
- 42:42thank God that I had my ICS. My leaders were all military
- 42:48prior. So it was an easier transition
- 42:50because they walked me through and that made life so much
- 42:53easier. They once I knew my left and
- 42:55right limit, they let me go because they knew.
- 42:57OK, now I know what I can and cannot do, you know?
- 42:59And one thing I learned was about because in DoD there's no
- 43:02what you call that presidential appointees as it like it is in
- 43:06our job. Political appointment.
- 43:08Yeah. And that was something I
- 43:09learned. So, you know, there's different
- 43:10things, but in the end it's just having structure.
- 43:12And he was able to show us from what the director and compared
- 43:17to a first Sergeant or something like that.
- 43:19So, yeah, it was a lot of a lot of similar things.
- 43:21Like in Rosebud. Come on in.
- 43:24Hey, what's up? Going on.
- 43:25What's up? Hey, Josh, What's up?
- 43:30Hey. There's.
- 43:32Josh And then I go to my former. To my former.
- 43:35Guys, we've talked about you guys and,
- 43:51and getting more veterans to come and females, you know,
- 43:55civilians, anybody, yes. Yes, that person, yeah.
- 43:59Absolutely. So we'll be talking all about
- 44:01that. That's that's what's up, you
- 44:03know, so. We are here to expand the
- 44:05middle. Yes, yes, expand the.
- 44:08Middle. As long as you still keep
- 44:10working out, you know what I'm saying.
- 44:14And there's even a gym here too. I didn't even got to go.
- 44:20So this is Dan. I mentioned him a while ago with
- 44:23the filmmaking class and yeah, you know, lots of great projects
- 44:29that you've done and you're teaching now and we're.
- 44:33So we're. Well, I don't know if you want
- 44:35to talk about where you teach. What do you do?
- 44:36Yeah, pull up. Please.
- 44:40Wow, this was unexpected. This is these are the best.
- 44:43Ones Dan Collins. Everyone.
- 44:46I'm friends with these crazy people.
- 44:48Yes, yes, yes, yes. I'm a film maker out of
- 44:50Philadelphia. I do video production work for
- 44:55university upstate, pay the bills while I do grad school.
- 44:57But mostly I'm a documentary storyteller and done a lot of
- 45:01work with a lot of different topics, but my work with
- 45:04veterans. Specifically, all you is.
- 45:08And what? What's the name of the
- 45:10documentary that you made? With From War to Wisdom.
- 45:13Yeah. Yeah.
- 45:14So we released that in 2017. It's on Amazon.
- 45:16It's on a couple of those channels.
- 45:19And yeah, it was a, it was like cathartic experience for
- 45:22everybody involved. I think me probably most of all,
- 45:25but I think it it helped a lot of these guys feel heard in a
- 45:28way that people transitioning back to society sometimes have a
- 45:31hard time being. Heard so which is great.
- 45:33I mean, that's why I wanted you guys to stop by because we are
- 45:37about giving veterans a voice, you know, and, and telling that
- 45:41story. And I think it's, you know, it
- 45:46is, it's not always about the end result of the documentary.
- 45:50It's the process that it took getting there, right?
- 45:53And, and you have to remember, making a documentary is not
- 45:56something you can just turn on a dime because there is a process
- 46:00to it. That one was about 6 years I
- 46:04think really from start to finish.
- 46:06I do them a little quicker now. Part of it is the learning
- 46:10curve. I had my own learning curve when
- 46:13I did mine so. And we would gather here
- 46:15annually. So each year I'd follow up and
- 46:17try to get a little further in this story and you raise funding
- 46:21piece meal. So you're like a couple little
- 46:24bit of change that pays for a trip to LA to go see little
- 46:27riders working with homeless veterans.
- 46:28Alright, a little while later, common ground on the border.
- 46:31Let's go down there and, you know, see what's happening
- 46:33there. So it takes a while, but you
- 46:35know, you just stick with it till you, like I said in my
- 46:37class, sometimes you get the ending you're looking for.
- 46:40Yeah, sometimes you don't. And you just go, well, real life
- 46:43doesn't always have, but here, years later, I'm seeing results.
- 46:50So so say hi here. I'm going to compound because I.
- 46:52Got to do a couple things. You're really just kind of
- 46:59thinking you're Facebook Live in a way.
- 47:02It's also going to be on LinkedIn, but you're really just
- 47:06kind of think about you're talking to us and it's just and
- 47:10it'll, it'll go out to YouTube and yeah.
- 47:12Hi, brother. So.
- 47:15I'll just introduce. Myself, yeah.
- 47:17Yeah, yeah, Hans, I work as a lighting director at the 9:30
- 47:21Club in Washington, DC Live music, it's pretty rad.
- 47:28I was Marine Corps infantry and I fought in Armani Wreck in
- 47:322004, in 2005 and again in 2007. Wow, so when did you get out of
- 47:39the military? 09/09 I was in 03 to 09 and I re
- 47:45enlisted and halfway through my second enlistment I got kicked
- 47:48out for smoking weed. Oh.
- 47:50You know, I, I re upped and I decided to get out of the
- 47:54infantry, take a break from getting shot at for a little
- 47:56bit. That was probably the worst
- 47:57decision I could have made. I feel like because it's a whole
- 48:00different Marine Corps on the the non infantry side, right?
- 48:03Right, right. It's.
- 48:04A lot slower pace, do you know what I mean?
- 48:07It is and. I was at the non deployable unit
- 48:09so like it was nothing but time to let all that shit catch up,
- 48:13you know what I mean? I don't.
- 48:14I don't. Mine is a devil's playground.
- 48:16Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that is so true.
- 48:20But you know, it's fine. Like I got my benefits and.
- 48:22Yep. Are you at 100%?
- 48:24No, where you at now 80? Okay, keep working.
- 48:27You're still working it. No, I'm like, I feel like we all
- 48:32know the VA game, you know what I mean?
- 48:34I feel like if I try to like up it or whatever, they're just
- 48:39going to be like, Oh no, we made a mistake without Haiti back
- 48:41down at. 30 you know what I mean, so.
- 48:44I'm happy with it, it pays my rent.
- 48:45Got you. You.
- 48:46Know what I mean? So all my all my job money is.
- 48:48Yeah, that's cool. Also for bills, but.
- 48:51I know I got you bro. It's rough out there right now,
- 48:53especially at DC. It's a crazy city.
- 48:55It is. I know we worked down there.
- 48:57What was what was What was your best take away out of coming
- 49:01through Common Grounds? Oh.
- 49:08Was it the camaraderie? I mean, I moved.
- 49:10Here from Texas after I got divorced because I didn't really
- 49:16have anything going on for me back home.
- 49:18And like, I knew a bunch of people out this way.
- 49:20So I was like, Austin ain't ain't it for me right now.
- 49:24I'm going to change the scenery. I moved to Westminster, MD.
- 49:30It is. That is quite a yeah, but.
- 49:32I did Westminster and then I moved even further out to the
- 49:35middle of nowhere with with my parents partner at the time,
- 49:39Manchester, Maryland. I don't know.
- 49:41Yes, out there in sticks. Dude, gotcha, gotcha.
- 49:45And then I moved to Frederick. Awesome little city.
- 49:47Yeah, yeah. Frederick lived with Frederick
- 49:49for five years. OK, Yeah.
- 49:51So yeah. Well, Dietrich's out there.
- 49:53Yeah, yeah. It is.
- 49:54Yeah. Yeah.
- 49:54Cool. Cool.
- 49:57What was your favorite class? Dan Collins, his documentary
- 50:03class, he always found the most engaging, most interesting, most
- 50:07riveting, most heart wrenching, most like intense documentaries.
- 50:12I don't know how he does it, probably.
- 50:14Because he's a yeah, yeah. Yeah, just no shit like that.
- 50:17You. Know what I mean?
- 50:18Yeah. Yeah.
- 50:18So it's. True or do you have any?
- 50:21You have to like. No beat.
- 50:23Out my leg. No, no, no, no, no, no, not
- 50:24here. No, it's they're all veterans.
- 50:27Yeah, yeah. Those are the ones you can see.
- 50:34Where? On the side right here, yeah.
- 50:35Right down. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 50:36Cool. Right on.
- 50:37Yeah. But but it gets it.
- 50:40It's the live numbers, but then it's going to get reshared and.
- 50:43You know, yeah, not a numbers guy anyway.
- 50:46Just do it for the love, right? That's it, that's it.
- 50:48That's what we do. It's to me this is about if it
- 50:52reaches one person and it can identify with something we just
- 50:56say and that helps them through today and that's all that
- 50:59matters. Do a dance movie.
- 51:01Because. For a while it felt like nobody
- 51:05had seen it. I mean, but like, every once in
- 51:08a while I got a contact from my dad, like out of the blue,
- 51:13hadn't talked to him in years. And he was like, hey, someone at
- 51:17work saw saw you in this documentary.
- 51:20It's really cool. You know, I understand.
- 51:22A little bit of where where? You're coming from now, you know
- 51:25what I mean? I was like, well, I guess
- 51:27somebody saw it, you know what I mean?
- 51:29Yeah, but but that hopefully that brought you and your dad
- 51:34together a little. Bit closer.
- 51:35That's okay, we don't have to get into that.
- 51:37But yeah, yeah, yeah. Sorry.
- 51:39That's okay. Yeah, it's fine.
- 51:41At least you reached out and told you that.
- 51:43Sure. Yeah.
- 51:43That's important. I mean, that's a blessing.
- 51:45Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
- 51:48Oh my goodness, I know. Bring the fucking vibe down.
- 51:50No, no. No.
- 51:53No, no, no, no, not even now, brother.
- 51:56This is This is what it's about. No, but did you enjoy you enjoy
- 51:59doing lighting? Oh, yeah, I'm like, I kind of
- 52:02stumbled ass backwards into it, into the job.
- 52:06A friend of mine I met here at Common Ground, actually, Phillip
- 52:09Spies. OK, he was living in DC at the
- 52:14time when I moved there and he was like, bro, apply to be a
- 52:17stagehand at the 9:30 Club. And I was like, I don't know
- 52:20anything about, I'm not a musician.
- 52:22I'm not an artist. On that, I'm not that crew or
- 52:24anything like that. It's like, doesn't matter.
- 52:26You can push a case. You're not strung out on heroin.
- 52:28You're a golden dude. You know what I mean?
- 52:31You can show up on time. And like push a.
- 52:33Case you're good, dude. And I did and I finally like I
- 52:36needed a job and they they hired me for as a stagehand and I did
- 52:41that for about a year and I was good at it.
- 52:44I mean, it doesn't take much. You just show up and follow
- 52:47instructions. Right, right, right, right.
- 52:49We're good at that. Right?
- 52:50Yeah, yeah. But they, they needed, I got in
- 52:53there at the right time because like there's this mass exodus of
- 52:56all the lighting and audio guys about a year before I got there.
- 52:58So they were. They needed some some roles to
- 53:01fill. You know.
- 53:03Now, I've been lighting at the 9:30 club for two years.
- 53:06That's cool. I.
- 53:07Also worked the anthem, the Lincoln Theatre and the the
- 53:13Atlantis. Wow, there we need tickets.
- 53:15Start today. No, what's where's the Atlanta?
- 53:17What kind of club is the? Atlantis is a it's our smallest
- 53:20venue, 450 personal cap is what we call it, and it's made to
- 53:29like, bring emerging artists. Onto the it's the nine. 30.
- 53:33Atmosphere. I see what you're saying.
- 53:35No, no, I have to now that I'm. I got time on my hands.
- 53:38Yeah, for sure. Yeah, no, I'm sure.
- 53:39Definitely. You know, I would like to go
- 53:40there, I think to check it. Out or venues?
- 53:43Check them out. You see any show you want to go?
- 53:44OK, OK. In.
- 53:45Contact with Hazel or Yeah, yeah.
- 53:47Yeah, before we leave. Yeah, that'll be cool.
- 53:49That'll be cool. Habit from 10 years.
- 53:51Ago you made my #8 change. Some things don't change.
- 53:55Some things don't change, man. It's 443.
- 54:00Well, that's OK. OK. 443.
- 54:03Yeah. And this is how we do it guys.
- 54:05We are live, right? It's this is connections.
- 54:09You know, it's pretty cool to get to do.
- 54:12This and just, you know. Talk, talk to people this.
- 54:16I couldn't imagine not being able to do a live after after
- 54:23being in class all week long and being able to see, you know,
- 54:30just kind of do this recap and and meet, you know, say goodbye
- 54:35to all these people. It'll be pretty cool when you
- 54:40when you after you finished your class, you know, back when you
- 54:45went here, common ground. Did you stay in contact with
- 54:49other people though? I've been here for 13 years now,
- 54:53I just couldn't make it this year.
- 54:54If it, yeah, it's. It's our maintenance time.
- 54:57'Cause we're. We're in our slow season for
- 54:59shows so we've our rig is broken as fuck right now so.
- 55:03OK. Yeah, I've been fixing lights
- 55:06and shit. Yeah, yeah.
- 55:07So couldn't make it this year unfortunately.
- 55:10I'll be back next year. Probably, yeah.
- 55:11And that's all that might we connect like?
- 55:13I said I've been coming 13 years straight.
- 55:16This is the first year I haven't.
- 55:17Yeah, attended. Yeah, well, fantastic.
- 55:21I'm glad you found it. You know Jose, Josh who was
- 55:25interact with? Yeah.
- 55:27We used to play Battlefield 3 together and you know, we just
- 55:32get drunk and talk shit. At 2 minutes you want to come
- 55:37over and say hi? Absolutely.
- 55:39Yeah, I am. So we'll switch you guys out.
- 55:43Thank you for coming on. Yeah, thank you brother.
- 55:45I move my homie. Yep.
- 55:47Yep, Yep. So everybody, this is Josh.
- 55:50Hi. Hello.
- 55:51Hello. So I have glasses on my eyes it.
- 55:53Really sensitive today? Yeah, sure they are.
- 55:57We really are. Like, no.
- 55:59Got you, man. Yeah.
- 56:00How's everyone doing? We're doing great.
- 56:02It's been good. It's been good.
- 56:03It's been good. It's been a good week.
- 56:06Yeah, we're excited for Eva next year.
- 56:08We've got the program, you know, so learn some stuff.
- 56:12She enjoyed it. She's enjoyed it and meeting new
- 56:14people. So I'm just glad that we have a
- 56:16women in the military teacher, yeah, that we know is coming
- 56:20next year. We've had a hard time getting
- 56:24this. Class together.
- 56:25And as you know, I always have our own fused to be a male
- 56:29veteran to teach. I'll never do that.
- 56:31I don't think that's right. It should be from the lens of a
- 56:33woman. And I think that we have a lot
- 56:35to learn from them about their experience.
- 56:38And so it should never be me. You know what I mean?
- 56:41And So what that it took a few years to get it going.
- 56:44We have the right teacher. Thank you.
- 56:47You have the right person. Yes, it took time to get there.
- 56:50Yeah, she is stupendous and she's more like 3 trophies in
- 56:53karaoke, but that's another. She's freaking awesome.
- 56:56We won't go there right you. Heard me sing last night, right?
- 57:01Yeah, you're off next year. You don't get off the hook.
- 57:03You're coming to the gazebo. We're gonna sing together.
- 57:06There you go. And I get you on.
- 57:08Stage right. There you go.
- 57:09There you go. Yeah, I will.
- 57:10Plonk, plonk. Yeah, play some C's and D.
- 57:14'S well, but here's the thing. You're in class here too,
- 57:16correct? Yeah, we said.
- 57:18Yeah, taking very beginner basic guitar.
- 57:20So a year from now. I should be a little.
- 57:33Bit better give me. The give me the finger sheet.
- 57:43Thing. 16 years here. I've been here and I've never
- 57:53been more serious than I am about expanding the middle.
- 57:57And this week we did that hard work.
- 57:59We did, yeah. There was some uncomfortable
- 58:01days. Yeah.
- 58:02But those are those are the moments when you know it's
- 58:04working, when you have to go back and be alone and just take
- 58:09a minute. Yeah, You know you're doing
- 58:10that. Yeah.
- 58:11Absolutely. And Eva, I can't thank you
- 58:13enough for. For thank you.
- 58:15Like with the cancellations and all this shit and you were like,
- 58:18I got it. Yeah, that's that's.
- 58:20That's right, we don't walk past me.
- 58:22That's. Right.

- 58:39Yeah, yeah. Yeah, hey, if you're a veteran
- 58:42and you like music, art or conversation, come to Common
- 58:45Ground. Next, we're going to bring 30
- 58:50veterans. Next, that's what I'm.
- 58:51Talking. I love it, love it.
- 58:52That's a great. Thing what you and I are going
- 58:54to do is be marketing on our podcast.
- 58:56Every show, every show, hey, we're going to take 5 minutes
- 58:59and talk about common ground and put it out there and that's,
- 59:02that's it. And you know what?
- 59:04And I'll close with this, 30 vets doesn't matter.
- 59:08It doesn't matter if you're the music, doesn't matter if you're
- 59:10anything. But I think that it's our job as
- 59:12veterans to show these people how to expand the middle.
- 59:16Yep, Yep. All right.
- 59:17We're going to be living examples of what we expect to
- 59:20see in the world, and they're going to take.
- 59:24Yeah. That's the only way I know how
- 59:26to do it. Yeah, yeah.
- 59:27Well, I can't wait to hear you jam out tonight.
- 59:31And you know, he, he, they, they practiced while ago all day.
