Transcript
- 0:00In his novel Martin Chuzzlewit, Charles Dickens exposes us to a
- 0:05character who is perpetually cheerful, Mark Tapley.
- 0:11We meet him in a comfortable situation, working at an inn
- 0:14with a warm relationship with the proprietor of the inn with
- 0:18whom he is in love and who is in love with him.
- 0:23He recognizes that this cheerful attitude may be conditioned by
- 0:27his favourable circumstances and posits that he will only know
- 0:32the steadfastness and character of himself and his cheerful
- 0:36responses to life if he can maintain that attitude in
- 0:41difficult circumstances. He purposely chooses to give up
- 0:46the comfortable situation and place himself in life
- 0:49circumstances that will challenge his ability to be
- 0:53cheerful. He passes the tests he set for
- 0:56himself and prove that he is able to face everything that
- 1:00life confronts him with while maintaining his basic and
- 1:04characteristic positive attitude.
- 1:08Poverty, life and death circumstances, being cheated by
- 1:13con men and facing all kinds of adversity did not shake him.
- 1:20What Charles Dickens illuminates here is an important lesson not
- 1:23only for life in the external world, but also for the way we
- 1:27confront obstacles, setbacks, difficulties, delays, and
- 1:33diversions that can come up during the spiritual practice.
- 1:39Srioro Bindu and the Mother remind us that the basic element
- 1:42of cheerfulness comes from the opening of the psychic being,
- 1:46and it's shifting the attention away from the external ego
- 1:49personality to the spiritual purpose and focus.
- 1:54It is the vital ego that suffers under the blows of the world.
- 1:59The psychic being can appreciate and understand that when there
- 2:03are issues or obstacles, they are part of the process of the
- 2:07transformation process and need to be taken in stride.
- 2:13The psychic naturally turns its focus towards the divine and
- 2:17thus attracts the support and energy that comes from the
- 2:21divine, just as the sunflower turns its face towards the sun.
- 2:28Srioro Bindu observes quote Cheerfulness is the salt of
- 2:34sadhna. It is 1000 times better than
- 2:37gloominess. It cheerfulness puts you in the
- 2:41right condition for the psychic to work, and without knowing it,
- 2:46you grow in just the right perceptions and right feelings
- 2:50for the spiritual attitude. The mother adds quote.
- 2:57All depression and gloom is created by the hostile forces,
- 3:00who are never so pleased as when throwing on you a melancholy
- 3:04mood. Therefore face your troubles
- 3:07joyously opposed with invariable cheerfulness the obstacles that
- 3:12beset the road to transformation.
- 3:16The best means of routing the enemy is to laugh in his face.
- 3:21You may grapple and tussle for days and he may still show an
- 3:24undiminished vigor, but just once laugh at him and lo, he
- 3:29takes to his heels. A laugh of self-confidence and
- 3:34of faith in the divine is the most shattering strength
- 3:37possible. It disrupts the enemy's front,
- 3:40spreads havoc in his ranks, and carries you triumphantly
- 3:44onwards. The converted vital feels a joy
- 3:49in the process of realization. All the difficulties implied in
- 3:54that process it accepts with gusto.
- 3:56It never feels happier than when the truth is shown it and the
- 4:00play of falsehood in its lower nature laid bare.
- 4:04It does not do the yoga as if carrying a burden on its back,
- 4:09but as if it were a very pleasurable occupation.
- 4:14It is willing to endure the utmost with a smile if it is a
- 4:18condition of the transformation, neither complaining nor
- 4:22grumbling, it endures happily because it is for the sake of
- 4:26the divine that it does so. It has the unshakable conviction
- 4:32that the victory will be won. End Quote.
