- 0:19Speaker 1: Elk Meat. Old man had been a long time without
- 0:24Speaker 1: food and was very hungry. He was trying to think
- 0:27Speaker 1: how he could get something to eat when he saw
- 0:29Speaker 1: a band of elk come up on a ridge. He
- 0:31Speaker 1: went over to them and spoke to them and said, brothers,
- 0:34Speaker 1: I am lonely because I have no one to follow me.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Go ahead, old man, said the elk, we will follow you.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Old man led them about for a long time, and
- 0:44Speaker 1: when it was dark, he came near a high, steep
- 0:47Speaker 1: cut bank. He ran around to one side where the
- 0:50Speaker 1: hill sloped, and then went back right under the steep
- 0:53Speaker 1: cliff and called out, come on, that is a nice jump.
- 0:56Speaker 1: You will laugh. So all the elk jumped off and
- 0:59Speaker 1: were killed, except one cow. They have all jumped, but you, said,
- 1:04Speaker 1: old man, come on, you will like it. Take pity
- 1:08Speaker 1: on me, said the cow. I am very heavy and
- 1:10Speaker 1: I am afraid to jump. Go away. Then said old man,
- 1:12Speaker 1: go and live. Then some day there will be plenty
- 1:15Speaker 1: of elk again. Old man built a fire and cooked
- 1:18Speaker 1: some of the meat. And then he skinned all the elk,
- 1:20Speaker 1: and cut up the meat and hung it up to dry.
- 1:23Speaker 1: The tongues he hung on a pole. The next day
- 1:26Speaker 1: he started off and was gone all day, and at
- 1:28Speaker 1: night as he was coming home, he was very hungry.
- 1:31Speaker 1: He was thinking to himself that he would have some
- 1:33Speaker 1: roasted ribs and a tongue and other good things. But
- 1:36Speaker 1: when he reached the place, the meat was all gone.
- 1:39Speaker 1: The wolves had eaten it. It was lucky I hung
- 1:41Speaker 1: up those tongues, said old man, or I should not
- 1:44Speaker 1: have had anything to eat. But when he took down
- 1:47Speaker 1: the tongues, they were all hollow. The mice had eaten
- 1:50Speaker 1: out the meat, leaving only the skins. End of chapter eighteen.
