- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Cover 4.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: If you're a Section 4 football fan, this is your podcast.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: I'm Coach Smith, your host.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Buckle your chin strap, put your mouthpiece in, and tie your cleats in double knots.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Welcome to our Games of the Week for week two.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Today we will analyze two key matchups between four undefeated teams, two of which are reigning state champions, plus our first segment of Ask Coach Smith.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Thank you to Tim Burney, the original TB, one of our Cover Four podcast football analysts, for sharing his analysis.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Now for our first game.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: The Horseheads Blue Raiders, currently ranked number 14th in New York State in Class A, will travel to Waverly to take on the Wolverines, who are currently ranked number one in New York State in Class C.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: The game will be Friday the 20th at 7 p.m.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: at Waverly.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Horseheads is off to a good start with the convincing wins over Watertown and Norwich, but this is a Waverly team that will be by far its stiffest test of this young season.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Waverly has flashed a balanced offense in the last two weeks, with sophomore Ben Shaw taking over at quarterback for five-year starter Joey Tomaso and a running back by committee backfield.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: The Blue Raiders also have a balanced offense led by quarterback Don Cardinale and a number of quality backs led by Bryce Thomas.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: It will all come down to the battle in the trenches, it usually does.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And Waverly has a pair of All-State linemen back in 350-pound Cam Hills and 260-pound Troy Beaman, and two other starters from last year, and a big tight end, Matthias Wells.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: The Wolverine defense has allowed just three points in wins over Class D state power climber Sherman Panama and Class A Binghamton.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Waverly also has one kick return and two punt returns for touchdowns, and an all-state kicker in junior Hogan Shaw, who has a 35-yard field goal to his credit already this season.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Keys to the game?
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Horsehead's D will have to be disciplined to stop Waverly's diverse offense.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Horses' offense will have to find a way to run the ball.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: And if Waverly forces Horseheads to throw the ball, it could spell trouble for the Blue Raiders.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: And now for our other game.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: That'll pit the Tioga Tigers, who are currently number one in New York State in Class D and on a 43-game win streak, are going to travel to Shenango Forks to take on the always tough Blue Devils who are ranked number two in Class C.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Not often do you get to see number one and number two play each other, but that has happened a few times here in Section 4 because Section 4 is so good.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: That game will be Friday night, also the 20th, at 7 p.m.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: at Shenango Forks.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: After wins over Class B Marivelle 26, 27-6 and Class C Windsor 31-20, it's safe to say the demise of the three-time defending Class D state champion Talga Tigers has been greatly exaggerated.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: The Tigers returned three and a half starters on the offensive line in Tate McAuley, Garrett Godfrey, Derek Mills, and Jackson Clark, who saw a great deal of time last season.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: And on to our second game.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Tyoga ran for 378 yards against Windsor and are averaging 329 through the first two games.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Shenango Forks began the season with decisive wins over West Hill 42-28 and Johnson City 26-0.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: This is the first of three straight home games against very tough competition.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: After Tyoga, Shenango Forks will face Newark Valley, then Maine Enwell.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: They need to remain focused on Tyoga and not look too far ahead.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Forks returns sophomore quarterback Sam Paskey and running backs Lucas Bartlow and Finn Stark.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: The Blue Devils did lose two or three starters up front, and that has to be a concern.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Shango Forks has more team speed than they've had in the past couple of seasons.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Keys to the game?
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Tiago will have to establish its running game against the traditionally rugged Blue Devils.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: The Tigers have only completed two passes this season.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: And now on to our Ask Coach Smith segment.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Bill writes, last weekend I attended a Section 4 football game.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: No one made a public announcement, but a running clock was started at the start of the third quarter.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: I presume it's a mercy rule, but it denies valuable playing time for second stringers.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: The clock started and ran all the time except for injuries or timeouts.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: It even ran during extra points and change of possession and time between a touchdown and the subsequent kickoff.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: My question is, what is the official rule for when to start a running clock, mercy rule?
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: And what's the the stop and start points under a running clock?
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Or is it a gentleman's agreement determined in the moment?
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Hi, Bill.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Thank you for your question and being a loyal Section 4 football fan.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: I consulted with Jim McLean, the rules interpreter for the Southern Tier football officials, and Jim states, New York State does not recognize any official mercy rule as it relates to a running clock.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: The decision is left to the discretion of the officiating crew.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Officials typically honor the request of the losing team to go to a version of a running clock if the point differential is substantial.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: In the case Bill cited, the coach of the losing team asked for a running clock.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: We typically let the winning coach know of our plans, and if he doesn't disagree, we go to a running clock.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: We wouldn't typically get to this point, usually until the second half.
