- 0:32what what's going on
- 0:34everybody welcome to lunch
- 0:36with the cladsdale I am
- 0:38here at least in spirit if
- 0:42not in a body um I actually
- 0:46contemplated not doing the
- 0:47show today but I want to
- 0:49stay consistent and be here
- 0:50for you guys every day um
- 0:52man I was thinking when I
- 0:56was younger like I could
- 0:59I could go out drinking with
- 1:02my buddies or my wife and
- 1:06light it up and get home at
- 1:10three o'clock in the
- 1:10morning and get four hours
- 1:12sleep and bounce back and
- 1:14go to work the next day and
- 1:16not even feel any effects.
- 1:18Now I don't drink at all,
- 1:21but if I don't get like
- 1:22seven to eight hours sleep,
- 1:24I am like a dog turd in the morning.
- 1:28woke up today it was a rough
- 1:30night had a lot to do with
- 1:36just taking care of my wife
- 1:37and the dog and all that
- 1:39kind of stuff and then I
- 1:41had to be back to work this
- 1:42morning and I got very
- 1:44little sleep last night and
- 1:46I am stro on the struggle
- 1:48bus just trying to stay
- 1:50awake uh through my work
- 1:52day oh my goodness
- 1:56anybody else experience that
- 1:58as you get older where you
- 1:58just like sleep has become
- 2:02so important in my life um
- 2:04and not that I like sleep a
- 2:06ton but I if I don't get
- 2:08that seven to eight hours
- 2:09man I am I'm a complete dog
- 2:13turd the next day and
- 2:14that's how I feel right now
- 2:16so uh but I wanted to jump on
- 2:19talk a little bit uh hang
- 2:22out with you guys so uh the
- 2:25first thing's first last
- 2:27night caroline I had great
- 2:29show if you did not watch
- 2:30sunday night crossfit talk
- 2:31you need to go check that
- 2:32out um there was some great
- 2:35discussion last night great
- 2:36comments in the chat uh you
- 2:39need to go check that out
- 2:41but one thing that we I
- 2:43posed a question to her is
- 2:46with this new season format
- 2:50Do we have to change the way
- 2:52we look at training?
- 2:53Because forever, CrossFit has been train,
- 2:58train, train, train, train,
- 2:59peak for this big event,
- 3:02and then do that big event.
- 3:04As we're moving forward through CrossFit,
- 3:10whatever it's going to become,
- 3:12we've added more off-season competitions.
- 3:15So now we have Rogue.
- 3:17Now we have Dubai.
- 3:18Now we have Waterpalooza.
- 3:20Um, now we have reps ahead.
- 3:23That's come in adding
- 3:24another element to the season.
- 3:26We've added the world
- 3:28fitness project now adding more, um,
- 3:31competitions, qualifiers, et cetera.
- 3:34Now we've added more in-person, uh,
- 3:36qualifying events,
- 3:38which have their own
- 3:39qualifiers and those in the season.
- 3:43And so.
- 3:46my I just got breaking news
- 3:48mike mccarthy is out as
- 3:50cowboys head coach just got
- 3:52let go or did not get
- 3:54resigned uh today so
- 3:56there's news there so
- 3:57anyway you have this season
- 4:00that goes on and is it
- 4:04going to become where if
- 4:06you want to be in more
- 4:08events you need to um
- 4:13you need to be more
- 4:15consistent through the
- 4:16season as opposed to peaked
- 4:19during the season.
- 4:21Like find a way to train
- 4:23where your body can perform
- 4:26more often at a greater rate at a,
- 4:31at the highest quality
- 4:32possible for that than just train, train,
- 4:36train, train, train peak for the,
- 4:38this big event at the end of the year.
- 4:41Um,
- 4:43I think this is what the
- 4:44athletes have been
- 4:45clamoring for for a very
- 4:46long time is they want more opportunity.
- 4:49They want to professionalize the sport.
- 4:52But with that comes,
- 4:55with the more opportunity,
- 4:56comes a different way that
- 4:57you have to look at the season.
- 4:59Um, and we hear people like it crash say,
- 5:03Hey, I, yeah, I did.
- 5:05Okay.
- 5:05But I wasn't peaked for this.
- 5:07Or that seems to be like the
- 5:09relative excuse at all of
- 5:11these different events.
- 5:12When someone doesn't do well,
- 5:14I wasn't peaked for this.
- 5:16Well, I think in the new style of CrossFit,
- 5:19you're not going to be
- 5:20peaked for things anymore.
- 5:21You are going to have to be
- 5:22the best you can be in that
- 5:25moment to compete.
- 5:27Now,
- 5:28The World Fitness Project
- 5:29has one thing right on this.
- 5:32You earn points at every
- 5:34event throughout the season
- 5:36showing that the most
- 5:37consistent athlete gets to the end.
- 5:43Where in the CrossFit game season,
- 5:45it's an elimination style.
- 5:48So either...
- 5:50They're not really focused on consistency,
- 5:53and maybe that's where
- 5:55there needs to be a tweak
- 5:56or something they can learn
- 5:58from this competitor that
- 6:01maybe they need to come up
- 6:02with a way to show
- 6:03consistency to get you to the finals.
- 6:07And then the most consistent
- 6:08people throughout the
- 6:09season are the ones that go
- 6:10to the CrossFit Games.
- 6:13Because with elimination style,
- 6:15if you are not ready to go
- 6:17in some of these events
- 6:18where they only take the top two,
- 6:20you are not going to make
- 6:21it to the CrossFit Games.
- 6:27Kenneth,
- 6:27whatever happened to don't get ready,
- 6:29stay ready?
- 6:30Right.
- 6:31I mean,
- 6:31isn't that kind of what CrossFit is
- 6:33built on?
- 6:34Readiness?
- 6:35Readiness for the unknowable,
- 6:37the unexpected, to be able to jump in and
- 6:42save someone from a burning
- 6:43building or jump in and be
- 6:44able to lift a car.
- 6:50I mean, those are extreme examples,
- 6:52but when I first joined CrossFit,
- 6:54it was all about functional
- 6:58fitness and being ready to
- 7:00jump into action when
- 7:01called to when emergency
- 7:03situations happened.
- 7:06yes the sport is a little
- 7:08bit different but I like
- 7:10the concept of hey let's
- 7:13stay as consistent as we
- 7:15can throughout the season
- 7:17as opposed to let's beat
- 7:18the body up and peak for
- 7:20this um one I think your
- 7:23athletic career will last
- 7:24longer you won't beat up
- 7:25your body you won't hear
- 7:26the stories of like rich
- 7:28froning and his knees and
- 7:30and things like that I think that
- 7:32it's an alternative way of
- 7:34looking at the season,
- 7:35but I do think that, um,
- 7:38it's almost the right way to do it.
- 7:40Maybe it's time to,
- 7:42to write this season and,
- 7:44and look at functional being functional,
- 7:48being able to be ready at any time, um,
- 7:52to do things.
- 7:53And then you have more
- 7:54opportunities throughout
- 7:55the season to show what you can do.
- 7:58Um,
- 7:59And so I want to hit a
- 8:00couple of these from Train to Live.
- 8:03Love more competitions,
- 8:04hopefully with reliable
- 8:05streaming options.
- 8:06Couldn't agree with you more.
- 8:09We need a way to find,
- 8:10we need a way to stream all
- 8:13of these events that are going on.
- 8:15It doesn't have to be
- 8:15perfect off the get-go,
- 8:17but we have to get there.
- 8:21Gives more opportunities for
- 8:22behind the scenes with
- 8:23athletes on how their
- 8:24training may be changing
- 8:26with increased opportunities.
- 8:28Yeah.
- 8:28My,
- 8:29my biggest worry like in this is I
- 8:31think that would be fascinating,
- 8:33but I think what is crazy
- 8:35is I think a lot of the
- 8:37athletes that's going to be
- 8:38to their advantage at first.
- 8:40And we may have a little more, um,
- 8:43undercover training for a
- 8:45little bit as people are
- 8:46trying to figure this out.
- 8:48They don't want to give up
- 8:49the secrets that they think
- 8:50are going to make them more
- 8:51successful in the new way
- 8:53the season is going to hit.
- 8:55Um,
- 8:56And so we may not get the wide open, hey,
- 8:59this is how I'm training
- 9:01for a little bit.
- 9:02But I think that once we do,
- 9:04it's going to be
- 9:04fascinating to see who changed what,
- 9:07how it worked.
- 9:10Maybe people admitting that
- 9:11they didn't change fast enough,
- 9:14things like that.
- 9:14I think that would make some
- 9:16fascinating documentary
- 9:17behind the scenes stuff
- 9:20with athletes for sure.
- 9:24And anytime we can get more media content,
- 9:26it's good for us junkies
- 9:28who love to watch it all.
- 9:31It's good for CrossFit,
- 9:32and it's good for the athletes.
- 9:34So, uh, speaking of which I cannot wait,
- 9:38cannot wait to watch
- 9:38Hiller's video with Raptus,
- 9:41Alexis Raptus.
- 9:41She's,
- 9:42she's always been a fascinating
- 9:44individual to me.
- 9:45Um, I can't wait to learn more about her.
- 9:48Um, uh,
- 9:49I just have not had time this
- 9:51morning with work to, to dive into that.
- 9:53And I dove into, uh,
- 9:56the mayhem podcast because
- 9:58they advertised it as
- 9:59preview of the season.
- 10:01It really was not that.
- 10:02And so I got stuck into that.
- 10:04and um and we'll talk about
- 10:07that here in a second we've
- 10:11all seen what works for one
- 10:13doesn't work for all
- 10:15example frazier and
- 10:16froning's programming
- 10:17breaking some people I
- 10:19don't disagree at all some
- 10:22people were just built uh
- 10:25to train all the time um
- 10:29And Rich trained every day.
- 10:30He did not take time off.
- 10:32Where Matt took big chunks
- 10:33of time off and then went
- 10:35at it in a very dedicated,
- 10:39silo-focused way, which is interesting.
- 10:47I just watched the Hiller video.
- 10:49Alexis is awesome.
- 10:50She is.
- 10:52I got to interview her one time,
- 10:54and I actually interviewed
- 10:55her when I was with Morning
- 10:56Chalk Up at the West Coast
- 10:58Classic right before the
- 11:00final event where she ended
- 11:02up losing her spot to the games.
- 11:06And I always wondered, like,
- 11:07did she think of me as bad luck?
- 11:10Because I interviewed her
- 11:11right before that moment.
- 11:13But she's awesome.
- 11:15She's always been cool to
- 11:16talk to at events.
- 11:19I'd love to get her on again.
- 11:21Because I find her very fascinating.
- 11:24And I do believe all the
- 11:26things that she has
- 11:26struggled with in her career...
- 11:29she's a sneaky, could be a sneaky surprise,
- 11:33uh,
- 11:34podium finisher at the games or at
- 11:37some of these big events, uh,
- 11:38because she she's overcome so much.
- 11:49What do you think about reps
- 11:51ahead being at water Palooza on Thursday?
- 11:53I think it's awesome.
- 11:55I think any time that you
- 11:57get to highlight athletes,
- 11:59and what I like about Reps Ahead,
- 12:01there's a couple things they do really,
- 12:03really well.
- 12:05One, it's one-on-one,
- 12:06so it's really easy to watch the race.
- 12:09Two,
- 12:10they have the rep counters very visible,
- 12:13so you can see,
- 12:14you know the story immediately,
- 12:16who has more reps than the other person.
- 12:18The person in green has more,
- 12:20the person in red has less,
- 12:21and you know the count.
- 12:25Um,
- 12:26and I think that I hope that people
- 12:29stick around to watch the,
- 12:31this group do it after the
- 12:33final individual event on Thursday night,
- 12:36because it's,
- 12:37it's a great lineup hopper versus pepper.
- 12:38Uh,
- 12:39and it is going to include an echo bike,
- 12:42which I think is really cool.
- 12:45You know, they want to,
- 12:45they want to test who's the fittest,
- 12:48who's the King of the echo bike.
- 12:50And they're going to get that opportunity.
- 12:51Um,
- 12:52Um, and so I think that's great.
- 12:54And Gazan versus Lawson.
- 12:56We really haven't seen Emma
- 12:58since the games.
- 12:59Uh,
- 13:00it's going to be interesting to see how
- 13:01she looks.
- 13:02I, if anything,
- 13:05I just want to see how she
- 13:07looks and how she, um,
- 13:11carries herself after all
- 13:13the kind of questioning of
- 13:15the last season.
- 13:16So I think that's going to
- 13:17be really fascinating to watch.
- 13:19And Alex Kazan is just a stud.
- 13:20I love watching her and
- 13:23seeing what she can do.
- 13:27Kenneth says, Reps ahead is growing on me.
- 13:29Still have hopes Fit Wars will come back.
- 13:31I've lost faith in Fit Wars.
- 13:34And I've talked to Wad Zombie about that.
- 13:38And I don't think he has any
- 13:40desire really to bring it back.
- 13:42He just wanted to show that
- 13:43it could be done.
- 13:45And I think reps ahead
- 13:46taking that is a good thing.
- 13:51It's different.
- 13:52It's fast.
- 13:54If I want to show somebody
- 13:55what CrossFit is,
- 13:57it's usually over in five minutes.
- 13:59So it's not something they
- 14:00have to invest an entire weekend in.
- 14:03And I can kind of show them
- 14:04briefly what it is and
- 14:06maybe get them more
- 14:08interested than if I was
- 14:09trying to get them to watch
- 14:10a CrossFit Games or a
- 14:11semifinal event or things like that.
- 14:16Uh, Kenneth also asked,
- 14:17have I watched the podcast
- 14:18on Madera's channel with him,
- 14:20Dell and Justin?
- 14:21Pretty great conversation.
- 14:22Yeah.
- 14:22We actually talked about it
- 14:24at length last night on the
- 14:25Sunday night CrossFit show
- 14:26that it was a gem of a podcast.
- 14:29Um,
- 14:30because mainly when I'm watching that
- 14:32kind of stuff,
- 14:32I'm looking for information
- 14:34to talk about on this show.
- 14:37And what I loved about that
- 14:38is I could just sit back
- 14:40and listen to them talk and
- 14:42laugh at their stories.
- 14:44Um,
- 14:46And I really, really enjoyed it.
- 14:48And I cannot wait.
- 14:49They're doing two more,
- 14:50one on Dallin's channel,
- 14:51one on Hopper's channel.
- 14:53And so I can't wait to hear
- 14:54what those are like as well.
- 14:57And I think it's a great format.
- 15:00And I hope that other
- 15:02athletes look at what
- 15:03they're doing and maybe can
- 15:05pull the same thing off.
- 15:06But I think the key to it is,
- 15:08that Justin was great as a moderator,
- 15:11kind of keeping the flow of
- 15:12the interview or not interview,
- 15:15keeping the flow of the
- 15:16storytelling going in a way
- 15:18that made sense.
- 15:21So it's going to be
- 15:22interesting to see if like
- 15:24Dallin becomes the
- 15:25moderator when he does it on his channel.
- 15:27And if Hopper becomes the
- 15:28moderator on his channel,
- 15:30But I think that was key
- 15:32that you have to have that
- 15:33person that kind of keeps you on track,
- 15:35keeps you rolling to the
- 15:36next subject and keeps the
- 15:38stories flowing.
- 15:39So I don't think I don't
- 15:42know if it was intentional
- 15:43or if it just kind of
- 15:44happened to be that way.
- 15:45But Justin was awesome in that role.
- 15:48Kudos to him for the way he
- 15:51handled that and really,
- 15:53really thoroughly enjoyed that.
- 15:55that podcast a lot it was
- 15:57just a turn the brain off
- 15:59and let them tell stories
- 16:01and I said last night the
- 16:02story with luke parker and
- 16:04jason hopper is priceless
- 16:07and uh every young person
- 16:10should uh hear that story
- 16:12that you know sometimes
- 16:14when you say things on
- 16:15social media it's going to
- 16:16come back and bite you so
- 16:19uh but I thought that was hilarious
- 16:27This might be too much information.
- 16:29Kenneth,
- 16:30I cleaned my bathrooms to that show.
- 16:34Yeah.
- 16:35Um, the funny thing about the,
- 16:37the Dallin pepper,
- 16:40talking about hopper rooting
- 16:42against him at west coast
- 16:43classic is I was at that
- 16:45event and I actually was
- 16:47standing beside hopper for
- 16:48a lot of that weekend um
- 16:51where I was in the media
- 16:52pit is where matt frazier
- 16:54and matt o'keefe were and
- 16:55hopper was there with his
- 16:56wife we actually did an
- 16:58interview with him and his
- 16:59wife for the morning chalk
- 17:01up that weekend and
- 17:02up in a VIP suite because he was,
- 17:08he had killed it at
- 17:10syndicate crown earlier in the season.
- 17:13And he came out of nowhere.
- 17:14Nobody really knew who he was.
- 17:16So we were scrambling to get
- 17:18us some interviews with him.
- 17:20And I,
- 17:21I believe that that is where O'Keefe
- 17:24signed him as an agent.
- 17:27And maybe he signed with
- 17:28HWPO that weekend as well.
- 17:32It was,
- 17:33But it was crazy.
- 17:34I was standing right there for most of it.
- 17:39But yeah.
- 17:45trained to live, unrelated,
- 17:47but with everything you have going on,
- 17:48are you still working with
- 17:49your nutrition coach?
- 17:50I've taken a break from the
- 17:52nutrition coach.
- 17:54I just needed to simplify
- 17:55some things in my life for
- 17:57a brief amount of time.
- 17:59I'm still working on my nutrition.
- 18:01I'm still losing weight.
- 18:03I'm still doing all my blood markers are
- 18:06going great.
- 18:08I just had to kind of
- 18:09simplify things for me
- 18:11while everything else was
- 18:12going crazy around me.
- 18:14And that's just one thing
- 18:15that I could control.
- 18:17I love Cheryl.
- 18:19I think the world of her and
- 18:20I'll probably hook back up
- 18:22with her in the near future.
- 18:24But I just needed something
- 18:26simpler for a brief minute.
- 18:29We had been working together
- 18:30for two and a half years
- 18:32and I just needed a break
- 18:33from the everyday of that.
- 18:36um but yeah still believe in
- 18:40the way she does things
- 18:41still believe in her and uh
- 18:45yeah oh this is questions
- 18:50for the clydesdale day
- 18:52what's your limit on a lego
- 18:53set whether it's pieces or
- 18:54price I've been looking at
- 18:56lord of the ring sets but
- 18:57it's like a thousand bucks
- 18:59so I don't think I've ever paid
- 19:04I don't think I've ever paid
- 19:05more than a hundred bucks for a Lego set.
- 19:07Uh, most of my stuff is very small.
- 19:12Um, my Chicago bear stadium, right.
- 19:17And that's not even officially Lego.
- 19:19That's a Brixels.
- 19:20It's a, they're smaller bricks,
- 19:23really a pain in the butt, but, um,
- 19:26that's the most,
- 19:26that's about a hundred bucks right there.
- 19:29Um, uh,
- 19:31But I've been looking at
- 19:32some sets on the Lego
- 19:34website that are much more than that.
- 19:40There's a friend set that I really,
- 19:42really like.
- 19:43There is an X-Men set that I
- 19:47think is really cool.
- 19:49It's the X-Men Mansion.
- 19:51But my nephew is also really into Lego.
- 19:54And he lives here in Columbus.
- 19:56And he just got the Daily Bugle.
- 20:01from Spider-Man and it is
- 20:02probably four to five feet
- 20:05tall and it comes with like
- 20:09it comes with like thirty
- 20:10minifigures but it is from
- 20:14Spider-Man across the
- 20:15universe and it is really
- 20:18cool and I've only he has
- 20:20not opened the box yet so I
- 20:21can't wait for him to to do that
- 20:26But yeah,
- 20:28I've been working on a Pirate Parrot,
- 20:30which is the mascot for the
- 20:31Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 20:32And it's in the Brixel.
- 20:33So the bricks are probably a
- 20:35quarter of the size of a Lego brick.
- 20:38And I have to use tweezers
- 20:39sometimes to put it all together.
- 20:42But I'm almost finished with it.
- 20:43I should be done with it by
- 20:45the end of the day today.
- 20:47And I actually bought my
- 20:48wife her first Lego set for Christmas.
- 20:52And it is the characters from Up.
- 20:56and it's called like brick heads.
- 20:57So you actually build the people.
- 21:00It's not the mini figures.
- 21:02And, um,
- 21:03she just put together Carl from up
- 21:05and it even has his little
- 21:06cane with the four tennis
- 21:08balls at the bottom.
- 21:10Uh, and then it has Kevin, the bird and,
- 21:13uh,
- 21:17the kid, Russell, Russell, the kid.
- 21:21And she really enjoyed it.
- 21:22And we talk about how, what,
- 21:24how satisfying it is to
- 21:26click those pieces together.
- 21:27And it just,
- 21:28it's like a feeling of accomplishment.
- 21:30Every time you like hear the click,
- 21:32feel the click.
- 21:33It's it, it's,
- 21:37it just feels like you're
- 21:38accomplishing something and
- 21:39it's so relaxing for me.
- 21:42So whenever I get a chance to do that,
- 21:44Uh,
- 21:45I do cause it just chills me out
- 21:48immensely,
- 21:49but I was working on the pirate
- 21:50parent and I had to read
- 21:51the CrossFit rule book.
- 21:53And so I had to put that
- 21:54down until I could get that done.
- 21:55So we could talk about that last night.
- 21:58Um, and it's,
- 22:00it's not a fun read to go
- 22:02through all that and take
- 22:03notes and be ready for show, uh,
- 22:06for that.
- 22:06So, so yeah.
- 22:11Wow.
- 22:13Got a lot out of this.
- 22:14So you guys are, so, um,
- 22:17I have not seen the Lord of
- 22:18the Rings sets, Kenneth.
- 22:20Uh, I'm not a huge Lord of the Rings fan.
- 22:24Um, I've watched them all of course.
- 22:26And I read the Hobbit in high school,
- 22:29but I, yeah.
- 22:32And there's so many Star Wars ones,
- 22:34and I'm not a big Star Wars fan.
- 22:36I love Indiana Jones.
- 22:37That was my deal when I was a kid.
- 22:39I did like superhero stuff.
- 22:42I have seen the Avengers Tower in Lego,
- 22:46and that's pretty massive.
- 22:48That's a few hundred dollars.
- 22:51The X-Men Mansion really is
- 22:54probably the one that's in
- 22:54my head the most.
- 22:56And I think that's two or three hundred,
- 22:58maybe three hundred.
- 22:59So...
- 23:02Yeah, it was a, you said Star Wars,
- 23:04Star Wars ones are overpriced.
- 23:06Anything that's licensed.
- 23:07I understand.
- 23:08I hear is like super expensive.
- 23:10because they have to pay the
- 23:11licensing fee to get those.
- 23:14So whether it's Lord of the Rings,
- 23:16whether it's Star Wars,
- 23:20whether it's Friends, whether it's X-Men,
- 23:24Avengers, any of those,
- 23:26they have to pay a licensing fee,
- 23:27which jacks the price way up.
- 23:30If you just want like a car, they're way,
- 23:32way cheaper.
- 23:43Jay Birch talk,
- 23:44talk with the young man who
- 23:45built a stadium five rocket.
- 23:47That's really cool.
- 23:48Saturn five rocket got
- 23:50stadium on the brain.
- 23:53All right.
- 23:53Train to live.
- 23:55Bring us back to CrossFit.
- 23:58Yeah.
- 23:58CrossFit NorCal workout with
- 24:00traveling to double unders.
- 24:06I don't hate it.
- 24:06I don't, I don't hate it.
- 24:10I don't love it.
- 24:13And it's just, it's for the qualifier,
- 24:14right?
- 24:15So I think anytime you add
- 24:21elements to the jump rope,
- 24:23it becomes a party trick in
- 24:25some form or fashion.
- 24:30I think heavy ropes and
- 24:34double unders are fine, but
- 24:39when you start doing like
- 24:40the crossover thing,
- 24:42cause I am not the fittest
- 24:43person in the world,
- 24:44but I have done crossovers my whole life.
- 24:46Crossover double unders are
- 24:50just easy for me.
- 24:51It's a party trick that I've
- 24:52had since I was like five years old.
- 24:55And when we would,
- 24:57when I would be at the gym
- 24:59and we're doing double honors,
- 25:00I would just mess around
- 25:01and do crossovers just to
- 25:02like talk smack to my friends.
- 25:06So when that got LM got introduced,
- 25:10I thought it was a little
- 25:11bit of a party trick.
- 25:13Um, and I'm,
- 25:13I kind of feel the same way
- 25:15with the traveling double unders,
- 25:17although it's a lot more
- 25:19simpler than a crossover
- 25:21because you're really just
- 25:22bounding off your toes and
- 25:23you're just shooting
- 25:25yourself forward with every jump.
- 25:27It shouldn't,
- 25:28I haven't really tried it to
- 25:30be honest with you.
- 25:31Um, I just think that it's not that hard.
- 25:36but it's kind of a party trick.
- 25:39I don't know.
- 25:44Kenneth says it's NorCal.
- 25:45They had a bucket hold last year,
- 25:47just a NorCal ism.
- 25:49I get that.
- 25:50But now you're,
- 25:52you are an event qualifying
- 25:55people to the CrossFit games.
- 25:58At some point you,
- 26:00you need to test the right
- 26:02things to get the right
- 26:03people to the CrossFit games.
- 26:06And by doing traveling double unders,
- 26:09what are you testing that
- 26:13tells you that that's the
- 26:14best athlete for the CrossFit Games?
- 26:16So I think that's the
- 26:17question you have to ask
- 26:18whether you like them or not.
- 26:26Double unders with the
- 26:27weighted vest would be a
- 26:28better alternative.
- 26:30I don't disagree with that.
- 26:34I think that's very similar
- 26:35to like the weighted double
- 26:36weighted handles or the weighted ropes.
- 26:45Yeah, I don't,
- 26:47I think that's less gimmicky
- 26:48than traveling.
- 26:51And so what are they
- 26:55measuring distance time?
- 26:57Like it doesn't matter how
- 26:59many double unders you do,
- 27:00as long as you,
- 27:02make it from point a to
- 27:03point b uh in such time if
- 27:07you is it do they have to
- 27:09be unbroken I guess I need
- 27:11to look into a little more
- 27:18but yeah I do think when
- 27:21you are an independent
- 27:23competition you can do all
- 27:25the fun stuff like uh the
- 27:27bucket holds and uh
- 27:33the traveling double unders
- 27:34and all of that stuff, right?
- 27:36When you are now qualifying
- 27:37someone to the CrossFit games,
- 27:40I think you need to like
- 27:41pull your stuff in, uh,
- 27:44so that it meets the
- 27:45requirement that you're
- 27:46getting the right people to
- 27:48the finals of the season.
- 27:56The trap,
- 27:56the distance increases each round
- 27:58on the traveling dubs.
- 28:00Do they have to be unbroken?
- 28:04Or if you break,
- 28:06do you go back to where you
- 28:08started to jump from the last one?
- 28:10Gosh, that seems like a judging nightmare.
- 28:16I would almost think that it
- 28:17would have to be unbroken, but,
- 28:21or you're putting a lot of
- 28:23pressure on a judge.
- 28:29So, yeah.
- 28:30I like the guys at NorCal.
- 28:31I think they try to go old
- 28:34school with a lot of their stuff,
- 28:36which I do find...
- 28:39to be a good thing.
- 28:41Um, I just,
- 28:43I hope they stay away from the
- 28:44gimmicky thing, um,
- 28:46and get the right people to
- 28:48the CrossFit games because
- 28:49they are essentially going
- 28:50to be the last chance qualifier.
- 28:55They are the last event on
- 28:56the calendar where people
- 28:58are going to go and try to
- 29:00get their way to the games,
- 29:01meaning they're going to
- 29:02have every big name that
- 29:04has not qualified is going
- 29:06to sign up for that.
- 29:08Uh,
- 29:12Uh, and it's going to be insane.
- 29:13It's going to be a great competition.
- 29:15And I just hope that they,
- 29:18they do their best to make
- 29:20it a great test to get the
- 29:22right people to the CrossFit games.
- 29:27Not sure where Lex is with these answers.
- 29:29I think it's broken into
- 29:30twenty five foot segments.
- 29:32Okay.
- 29:33That makes a little more sense.
- 29:35unbroken for twenty five
- 29:36feet would be okay I still
- 29:41I still don't I'm not in
- 29:41love with this but lex was
- 29:44here off the top of the
- 29:45show but I know she works
- 29:48too so maybe she's at work um but yeah
- 29:55But I do know that Carolyn
- 29:57probably will be at NorCal
- 29:59because Lex lives right there.
- 30:02That's an easy competition
- 30:03for them to get to.
- 30:04It cuts down on travel for sure.
- 30:09So, yeah.
- 30:14Craig,
- 30:15did you talk about no quarterfinals
- 30:17this year?
- 30:18At the affiliate,
- 30:18I heard members who made
- 30:19quarterfinals last year
- 30:20seem bummed about no
- 30:22quarterfinals this year.
- 30:23I don't think they'll sign up this year.
- 30:28so I know we talked about it
- 30:29briefly on sunday night
- 30:30crossfit talk because jamie
- 30:32had the same sentiments
- 30:34that you're talking about
- 30:34here she has athletes that
- 30:37just missed quarterfinals
- 30:39last year and it was their
- 30:41goal to make quarterfinals
- 30:43this year now with the
- 30:48community cup you would
- 30:50know if you made it if you were a level
- 30:55eight or up, and then some of the sevens.
- 31:01So,
- 31:04so you can still kind of test yourself
- 31:06to see if you make it in it.
- 31:08You're just,
- 31:09you're shooting for a level now,
- 31:11as opposed to a thing
- 31:13called quarterfinals.
- 31:15And then you get to compete
- 31:16against the same,
- 31:18the people in your level group,
- 31:22which if you are a seven or an eight,
- 31:24you get to compete with all
- 31:26the sevens and eights.
- 31:28um and they're called
- 31:29something and I don't
- 31:30remember exactly what that
- 31:31is but there's like a pro
- 31:33advanced intermediate
- 31:35rookie and it's every two
- 31:38levels so level one and two
- 31:40are rookie um I don't
- 31:42remember what I think level
- 31:45three and four are scaled
- 31:49number I don't know I I
- 31:51don't want to say anything
- 31:52and misspeak but um but yeah
- 31:58And then you'll get to
- 31:58compete against people in that group.
- 32:00So you still get that opportunity.
- 32:02It's just not called
- 32:02quarterfinals anymore.
- 32:05Yeah.
- 32:07Yeah.
- 32:10NorCal still being
- 32:10exclusively streamed by Savant.
- 32:13I know it's being streamed by Savant.
- 32:15I heard them say that on the spin.
- 32:18Whether that is exclusive or not,
- 32:20I do not know.
- 32:21I would guess yes,
- 32:23because I don't think
- 32:23they'd want to invest in
- 32:25more streaming when there's
- 32:27someone already streaming.
- 32:29But Bill and John will be
- 32:30calling the NorCal Classic.
- 32:34They announced that on the spin,
- 32:37not last week, maybe.
- 32:51Do we know if the levels
- 32:52carry over or is it just
- 32:54based on this year?
- 32:56I was bummed about not
- 32:57having quarterfinals,
- 32:58but I have some hope with
- 32:59the explanation of the community cup.
- 33:02I don't know.
- 33:05I don't know if it carries over.
- 33:06I think at least some aspect of it should.
- 33:10How that would look, I don't know.
- 33:12But it seems right now it's
- 33:14in a very simplistic state
- 33:22where it seems to be just
- 33:23the year we're in.
- 33:25But I think that...
- 33:30I think they want to see
- 33:31like the engagement of this
- 33:33and how many people actually sign up.
- 33:36Uh, and then,
- 33:41and then we'll go from there
- 33:42and see maybe they'll,
- 33:43they'll tweak it or something in the,
- 33:45in the future.
- 33:47Craig says no one's really
- 33:48promoting the community cup.
- 33:50Well,
- 33:50Dave just put on Instagram two days ago,
- 33:54the explanation of what the
- 33:55community cup is and how it works.
- 33:58So I think that's the first
- 33:59time we've actually
- 34:00understood how it's going to be.
- 34:02And that was just two days ago.
- 34:05And I think I'll pull that
- 34:07up and we can play that
- 34:09because he really does
- 34:10explain it well and what
- 34:11the divisions are.
- 34:12Yeah.
- 34:17Let me pull that up super fast here.
- 34:24And I'll just play it live
- 34:25on here and you can,
- 34:26you can watch it from here.
- 34:31Hit the wrong.
- 34:39Okay.
- 34:40So here we go.
- 34:50As long as it always has
- 34:51been out of the open,
- 34:52once you finish the three workouts,
- 34:54you'll be assigned a level,
- 34:56level ten all the way down to one.
- 34:58Those are the percentage range.
- 35:00The percentage you finish in
- 35:02the open determines your level.
- 35:04So if you finish in the
- 35:05fiftieth percentile in the open,
- 35:08you're a level five athlete.
- 35:10Once you have your level,
- 35:11then in the community cup,
- 35:13you will be assigned a category.
- 35:15So you're a pro.
- 35:16an advanced, intermediate, novice,
- 35:19or rookie.
- 35:19So in the example of fifty percentile,
- 35:22I finished in the fifty
- 35:23percentile from the open in
- 35:25this intermediate category.
- 35:27In the community cup,
- 35:28you will then have the ability to compete
- 35:31amongst these categories
- 35:33against your peers, essentially.
- 35:36It'll be one week,
- 35:37three events across that one week.
- 35:39So the goal out of the open
- 35:40is to try to perform as
- 35:43well as you can and be in
- 35:44the highest level possible
- 35:46that you can be in to then
- 35:47compete against people in
- 35:49your categories.
- 35:50The workouts will be
- 35:51programmed appropriately for each group.
- 35:53So if we use an example of
- 35:56and handstand pushups, deadlifts,
- 35:58the rookies might use one
- 35:59thirty five and substitute
- 36:01for the handstand pushups
- 36:02where the pros might do
- 36:02handstand walk and we might
- 36:04amp it up to two seventy five.
- 36:06So we programmed
- 36:07appropriately for the group.
- 36:08The reason we did this is to
- 36:09give more athletes from the
- 36:11open an opportunity to
- 36:12compete in another stage of competition.
- 36:15And I hope to see you on the leaderboard.
- 36:18So the.
- 36:21That is.
- 36:23Dave's explanation as to
- 36:24what the community cup is.
- 36:27As you can see the percentile,
- 36:29that's one thing I actually
- 36:30missed the first time I watched it.
- 36:32Like a level ten,
- 36:33you have to be ninety ninth
- 36:34percentile or a hundredth percentile.
- 36:37Nine is eighty eight to ninety eight.
- 36:40And then it goes down from
- 36:41there and kind of the gap
- 36:43widens a little bit.
- 36:45But yeah, to be in that pro division,
- 36:47it's really the upper like
- 36:51Level ten is the two percent in the world.
- 36:55Nine is eighty eight to ninety eight.
- 36:57And then all of that would
- 36:58be the pro from eighty
- 36:59eight to nine to one hundred.
- 37:01And then you get to compete
- 37:02in that pro division in the
- 37:04community cup.
- 37:07So.
- 37:09Yep.
- 37:10And that's what they're trying to do.
- 37:13It's allowing everybody in
- 37:15the CrossFit world,
- 37:17not just the top twenty five percent,
- 37:19but everybody an
- 37:20opportunity to keep playing.
- 37:23So instead of quarterfinals,
- 37:24we have this where
- 37:25everybody gets to go on.
- 37:26But you get to compete in
- 37:27your division against
- 37:29people of your level.
- 37:39Kenneth says,
- 37:39I'm not quoting this by any means,
- 37:41just how I understood it.
- 37:42But last night on seven
- 37:43Hiller mentioned the need
- 37:45of news updates coming from
- 37:46an actual brick and mortar HQ,
- 37:48as opposed to just on or Dave.
- 37:51So I watched that as I was
- 37:53going to bed last night.
- 37:54Um,
- 37:56And I think what they were
- 37:58trying to say is what needs
- 38:00to happen for CrossFit to grow.
- 38:02And they were saying that it
- 38:03really needs to have a
- 38:05group of people in a brick
- 38:06and mortar building who can
- 38:08share creative ideas and
- 38:11bounce things off of each
- 38:13other to come up with newer
- 38:16and greater ideas.
- 38:18What I have always
- 38:19complained about is I hate
- 38:21that the news comes out
- 38:23from an individual's Instagram account.
- 38:27If you're going to be a legit company,
- 38:30there are press releases.
- 38:32They do press releases,
- 38:33but they choose not to use
- 38:35them in some aspects.
- 38:37If you're going to release
- 38:38information on the community cup,
- 38:41do a press release.
- 38:42There are now all these
- 38:44third party media companies
- 38:45who want content to talk
- 38:47about on their shows and
- 38:49they can grab the press
- 38:50release and we can get,
- 38:52that's just a marketing
- 38:53thing that would help them move forward.
- 38:55Instead, we have to scour Instagram,
- 38:58see what Dave's saying,
- 38:59see what the CrossFit games
- 39:00page is saying,
- 39:01see what the CrossFit page is saying.
- 39:04And then God forbid,
- 39:04if Don Fall does a podcast,
- 39:06you need to make sure you
- 39:07go see that to see what he
- 39:09is saying and what
- 39:10information is being released there.
- 39:12It's just being released
- 39:13from every different aspect
- 39:15instead of one simple place
- 39:19for a press release where
- 39:21we can all grab that and we
- 39:23can talk about it with our
- 39:24audience and have these
- 39:26discussions like we're having today,
- 39:28which I think are
- 39:29invaluable and great for marketing.
- 39:32Because we just showed that
- 39:34Instagram thing,
- 39:36and Craig's going to tell
- 39:37his members tonight on how
- 39:38it all works and kind of
- 39:40promote it from a grassroots level.
- 39:43That's what makes CrossFit great.
- 39:45When you do things in a way
- 39:47that allow the grassroots
- 39:49marketing of what we do,
- 39:52then things get better.
- 39:57But there's tons of us out there.
- 39:59There's me.
- 40:00There's Coffee Pods Mods.
- 40:01There's Siobhan.
- 40:01There's Hiller.
- 40:03There's, gosh, Talking Elite Fitness.
- 40:07There's Get With The Programming.
- 40:10When all those people start
- 40:11talking about this stuff,
- 40:13it will spread like wildfire.
- 40:15We just have to get it out
- 40:16to them in a way that makes sense.
- 40:30D reads as if CrossFit HQ
- 40:31centralizes communications,
- 40:33they will need an
- 40:34infrastructure to do that
- 40:35kind of goes against their
- 40:36current staffing trend.
- 40:39I see what you're saying.
- 40:41I do think that.
- 40:44So this.
- 40:46okay.
- 40:47I work from home.
- 40:48Um, I work for the state of Ohio.
- 40:50We have meetings all the time, uh,
- 40:53where we talk about things,
- 40:54we bounce ideas off each other.
- 40:56Uh,
- 40:56but we have a very structured meeting
- 40:58set up, uh,
- 40:59throughout the week to be able
- 41:00to do that.
- 41:01I just don't,
- 41:04I'm not a firm believer where
- 41:05it has to be brick and mortar,
- 41:07but you have to have a,
- 41:09you have to have systems
- 41:10set up where you are in
- 41:12communication with other
- 41:13people in your units, uh,
- 41:17to bounce ideas off one another.
- 41:20Um, you, and you,
- 41:21it has to be forced because
- 41:22if you're working from home,
- 41:24the trend is you just want
- 41:25to dive into your work,
- 41:26but you have to have
- 41:27mandatory meetings where people come,
- 41:29we talk, we bounce ideas off each other.
- 41:32It took a couple of years
- 41:33for us to figure that out.
- 41:34We've gotten there and I
- 41:35think CrossFit could do the same thing.
- 41:41So.
- 41:44Right.
- 41:44Exactly.
- 41:45We use Microsoft Teams all the time,
- 41:48Jay Birch.
- 41:49And we actually are forced to be on video.
- 41:53When we first came home,
- 41:54we didn't have to be and
- 41:56people weren't on video.
- 41:58We are now forced to have
- 42:00our video on whenever we're
- 42:02on MS Teams and so that we
- 42:04can talk and be interactive
- 42:06with each other.
- 42:23So, uh, kind of thank you.
- 42:27Like, and subscribe,
- 42:28support the show for free.
- 42:30Yeah.
- 42:30My lunch hour is just about over.
- 42:32I do want to a couple of reminders.
- 42:35Um,
- 42:36than the like and subscribe
- 42:38and hey and if you're
- 42:38listening to us this shows
- 42:40doing really well on audio
- 42:41so if you're listening to
- 42:42us on Spotify or iTunes or
- 42:44Amazon music or any of
- 42:45those make sure you leave a
- 42:47five-star review there as
- 42:48well but I want to remind
- 42:51you we have my first
- 42:53interview with an athlete
- 42:54since the CrossFit Games
- 42:55I've taken a break from
- 42:56that for about six months
- 42:57We are having Hattie Canio
- 42:59on tonight at six PM Eastern time, uh,
- 43:01to talk about her off season,
- 43:04what the season looks like for her,
- 43:06what she's going to do this,
- 43:07this season coming up.
- 43:09And, uh,
- 43:10can't wait to catch up with an old
- 43:11friend.
- 43:12If you don't know,
- 43:13we used to do a show
- 43:14together where she was live from Bali.
- 43:16Um,
- 43:17And training there.
- 43:18And so we're going to have
- 43:19her on tonight to talk
- 43:20about her first games
- 43:22experience probably didn't
- 43:23go the way she had planned.
- 43:26So we'll talk about that and
- 43:27we'll talk about what she
- 43:28has looking forward to this season.
- 43:30And she's actually had a
- 43:31pretty awesome offseason.
- 43:34So can't wait for that.
- 43:36And then tomorrow,
- 43:37he just popped into the chat.

- 44:01Corey and I's list tomorrow.
- 44:03We'll debate that.
- 44:05If you guys have any questions tomorrow,
- 44:07Corey's a Masters athlete
- 44:08trying to make his way to
- 44:09the CrossFit Games in the next few years.
- 44:12We'll talk a little bit
- 44:12about his experience at Legends this year,
- 44:15which was his goal,
- 44:17and then what he's doing to
- 44:19move forward as an athlete
- 44:21in the Masters space.
- 44:23With that, guys,
- 44:24thank you so much for a great lunch hour.
