Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:07Speaker 2: All right, well, I'm here with lou Turminello for another
- 0:09Speaker 2: Terminillo's take and a lot of sessions today in radio.
- 0:13Speaker 2: But here we are with Louis Lou on the podcast.
- 0:17Speaker 2: And you know what number comes to mind, right, and
- 0:20Speaker 2: what player comes to mind as we hit the last
- 0:23Speaker 2: weekend of the season, mister Babe Ruth, three pivotal games
- 0:28Speaker 2: for the Yankees and sure the Mets, but for the Yankees.
- 0:31Speaker 2: And I would say in season regular season history that
- 0:37Speaker 2: I can remember the most pivotal final regular season weekend
- 0:41Speaker 2: for a lot of teams, including the Yankees.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Hey, Alex, how are you? Thanks for having me? As always? Well,
- 0:47Speaker 1: the Yankees are in. I mean that they're either going
- 0:49Speaker 1: to play two out of three against the Red Sox
- 0:52Speaker 1: and all likelihood or they're gonna get to buy. For
- 0:58Speaker 1: the Yankees, obviously it's all about the postseason, whether they
- 1:01Speaker 1: win the division or they played in two out of three.
- 1:05Speaker 1: And obviously they've had some past hitting problems come playoff time,
- 1:14Speaker 1: and you know the challenges for the Yankees are are
- 1:16Speaker 1: they gonna be able to to hit playoff pitching? There'll
- 1:21Speaker 1: be pressure on Aaron Judge who's the best player in
- 1:25Speaker 1: baseball to come through come in the postseason, which he
- 1:29Speaker 1: never really has. Can Trent Grisham and Jazz Chisholm take
- 1:34Speaker 1: their best career seasons ever into the postseason and have
- 1:38Speaker 1: continued success. I think those are the questions. Will the
- 1:43Speaker 1: Yankees poor fielding and lack of fundamentals bad base running,
- 1:47Speaker 1: which has done them in in other playoff series rear
- 1:52Speaker 1: its ugly head. I think the Yankees are in pretty
- 1:55Speaker 1: good shape now. I'm not gonna I know that they
- 1:58Speaker 1: had a very easy September schedule and that's helped them
- 2:03Speaker 1: get back into potentially getting the buy and winning the division.
- 2:06Speaker 1: But they took advantage of a favorable schedule, So we'll see.
- 2:13Speaker 1: And again, just like last year, the road to the
- 2:16Speaker 1: World Series is not like it wasn't it is in
- 2:19Speaker 1: the National League, even though the National League isn't as
- 2:23Speaker 1: dominant as I thought it was going to be going
- 2:25Speaker 1: into the season. But I think the Yankees are in
- 2:27Speaker 1: good shape the pit. They got good starting pitching. It
- 2:30Speaker 1: seems like they've strained out their bullpen, and I mean,
- 2:36Speaker 1: they could love next Friday. At this time, they could.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Be out of it.
- 2:39Speaker 1: If they don't win the division if they play the
- 2:41Speaker 1: Red Sox, and the Red Sox have good pitching lined up,
- 2:43Speaker 1: I'm sure Crochet will be geting the game one starter.
- 2:47Speaker 1: They could be out of it, but they could also
- 2:48Speaker 1: be getting ready for the next round. So uh so
- 2:53Speaker 1: we'll see. I mean, the Yankees are closing the season
- 2:56Speaker 1: on an uptick, and that's how you want to go
- 2:59Speaker 1: into the playoff.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I know strength and schedule has really helped them out
- 3:03Speaker 2: here down the run, but as you say, they're taking
- 3:05Speaker 2: advantage of it. They're not losing the bad teams, and
- 3:07Speaker 2: we always say it's how you do against the bad
- 3:09Speaker 2: teams that it's sort of a sign. And also the
- 3:12Speaker 2: fact that they can win now without hitting a homer
- 3:15Speaker 2: every night is vital to postseason. And I'll tell you,
- 3:18Speaker 2: and maybe I haven't looked enough closely at it, the
- 3:22Speaker 2: fundamentals feel a lot better than last year. I don't
- 3:25Speaker 2: know where the change went, but it's like they got
- 3:28Speaker 2: rid of DJ. They moved Jazz the second and all
- 3:30Speaker 2: of a sudden things were moving from that point forward. Yeah.
- 3:34Speaker 1: No, Chisholm has been tremendous for the Yankees, There's no
- 3:36Speaker 1: doubt about it, and that that move to put him
- 3:42Speaker 1: at a second after they got Ryan McMahon, who's done
- 3:44Speaker 1: a good job field and he hasn't hit, but to
- 3:49Speaker 1: save an out or two with a great play that
- 3:51Speaker 1: he may make, I'll help your pitching staff and contributes
- 3:56Speaker 1: to wins. Youon't always have to, you know, go four
- 3:59Speaker 1: for four, contribute to wins as we've seen many times.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And the defense of major League Baseball Alex overall, I
- 4:07Speaker 1: think that is that it's all time greatest. You have
- 4:11Speaker 1: great athletic players. I mean you saw the catch by
- 4:16Speaker 1: Noel z Marte saved the Reds Bacon yesterday by stealing
- 4:20Speaker 1: that home run, going way over the fence to steal
- 4:23Speaker 1: Brian Reils of a home run yesterday that would have
- 4:25Speaker 1: tied the game against the Reds in the game that
- 4:28Speaker 1: the Reds had to win yesterday. Pete crow Armstrong, even
- 4:32Speaker 1: though the Cubs loss, made a spectacular catch on on
- 4:37Speaker 1: a Soto rocket. He's just a great center fielder. And
- 4:41Speaker 1: part of you have these guys are great athletes, better
- 4:44Speaker 1: than ever. But a part of the great defensive plays
- 4:49Speaker 1: are the is the modern major league glove. It's so
- 4:52Speaker 1: big and the web is so strong. It helps these
- 4:57Speaker 1: great defensive players make even greater the plays. So you know,
- 5:03Speaker 1: in this season of wild extremes where teams have won
- 5:07Speaker 1: ten in a row then lost ten out of eleven,
- 5:10Speaker 1: and we've seen we could just about mark every team
- 5:12Speaker 1: in the major leagues. But coming down to the last
- 5:15Speaker 1: three days and you know, we'll see if the Mets
- 5:18Speaker 1: could get in. Obviously, the Mets pitching staff or lack
- 5:22Speaker 1: of pitching has sabotaged their efforts to win games. And
- 5:26Speaker 1: you know they were forced out of desperation to bringing
- 5:29Speaker 1: up Nolan m Playing who's just been spectacular, Johanna Jonah
- 5:34Speaker 1: Tong who has been okay, he probably is it wasn't ready.
- 5:39Speaker 1: And Brandon Sprout, who, with their life on the line tonight,
- 5:41Speaker 1: will be pitching in an important game against the pitcher
- 5:46Speaker 1: won the Saw Young Award two years ago and is
- 5:49Speaker 1: pitching great the last six weeks. Sandy al Contra, I mean,
- 5:55Speaker 1: Lindor Soto, Alonso, Nemo, they all produce for the Mets,
- 6:00Speaker 1: and they did their job, and the Mets have a
- 6:03Speaker 1: layout closer. He did his job and they're still in
- 6:06Speaker 1: the life in that situation. Alex Viento's had a big
- 6:10Speaker 1: twenty twenty four as you like to call him. He
- 6:12Speaker 1: was the call of the year, and he was. He
- 6:15Speaker 1: has been terrible in twenty twenty five. He really has.
- 6:19Speaker 1: They get no center field offensive production. It's good to
- 6:22Speaker 1: have Tyrone Taylor back, even though he's not much of
- 6:24Speaker 1: an offensive player. He's a gold Glove defensive center fielder.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And the two major injuries to Francisco Alvarez has killed them.
- 6:33Speaker 1: But that being said, they should not be in this
- 6:36Speaker 1: position and if they don't make it this weekend, Alex,
- 6:40Speaker 1: this is the biggest failure in franchise history. I mean,
- 6:43Speaker 1: none comes close. And I'm you know, I'm a lifelong
- 6:45Speaker 1: Mets fan, and I would consider myself a Mets of
- 6:49Speaker 1: storian on some level, and I've been watching this team
- 6:53Speaker 1: since that second and third year in their existence. This
- 6:57Speaker 1: is the biggest failure in franchise history. This is bigger
- 6:59Speaker 1: than twothdays and seven because if this playoff system was
- 7:02Speaker 1: in two thousand and seven, even though they blew first place,
- 7:06Speaker 1: they would have been in the playoffs, very similar like
- 7:09Speaker 1: the Detroit Tigers are now, who have blown a fifteen
- 7:12Speaker 1: and a half game lead and still might get a
- 7:16Speaker 1: golden parachute because a there's a playoff position. This is
- 7:22Speaker 1: unlike the two thousand and seven Mets, or the nineteen
- 7:25Speaker 1: sixty four Phillies who blew a six and a half
- 7:27Speaker 1: game lead with a twelve to go, or the nineteen
- 7:32Speaker 1: seventy eight Red Sox, he blew a fourteen game lead
- 7:34Speaker 1: to the Yankees. There was no playoff. There was no
- 7:38Speaker 1: soft landing with a playoff spot. So a very weird season.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I think a very weird baseball season comes to an
- 7:46Speaker 1: end on Sunday. But if the Mets don't make it
- 7:50Speaker 1: absolute failure. And even if they do make it, it's
- 7:53Speaker 1: still been a bad season.
- 7:56Speaker 2: And it's just been a weird year of streaks on
- 7:58Speaker 2: every part. I mean in the core the Tigers streaks
- 8:01Speaker 2: that are doing them in now is the most shocking
- 8:04Speaker 2: of the whole season. But I'll tell you, I remember
- 8:06Speaker 2: that game in a Washington when the Mets let it
- 8:08Speaker 2: get away and threw it away.
- 8:10Speaker 1: They had a few.
- 8:11Speaker 2: More of those games, and if they had those games
- 8:14Speaker 2: sealed up, they would not be in this position right now.
- 8:17Speaker 2: There's no doubt about that.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Yeah, now, there we've got a few games. There was
- 8:20Speaker 1: that game against Washington early in the year. There was
- 8:25Speaker 1: that game on Sunday after against the Yankees where they
- 8:27Speaker 1: almost won, but they were pitching minor league pitchers and
- 8:31Speaker 1: they were in.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Cleveland, the one where you were laced with f bombs
- 8:34Speaker 2: in your response to me because you couldn't believe how
- 8:37Speaker 2: I think it was. Uh, well it was Beatty who
- 8:43Speaker 2: threw the ball in the right field. I mean, well
- 8:44Speaker 2: it wasn't it was that, but it was the tyrone.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Taylor was on first base, and uh, I believe it
- 8:53Speaker 2: was Lindor double down the right field line and the
- 8:57Speaker 2: third base coach, saw Bor held them up and he
- 9:00Speaker 2: should have definitely sent them and I'm almost sure if
- 9:03Speaker 2: Taylor would have scored and then.
- 9:07Speaker 1: The Mets would have won the game. They lost it
- 9:09Speaker 1: in the tenth inning. Those type of little things make
- 9:13Speaker 1: a difference when you're trying to get in the playoffs.
- 9:15Speaker 1: And Alex, let me tell you, even though there are
- 9:18Speaker 1: a bunch of average teams getting into the sixth spot
- 9:21Speaker 1: and fifth spot, there's a lot of average teams. Major
- 9:24Speaker 1: League Baseball loves this, and as fans, we have more
- 9:27Speaker 1: interest the Cleveland Guardians. Fans thought they were out of
- 9:31Speaker 1: it six weeks ago. Now they're in it. And I
- 9:36Speaker 1: mean even a Diamondbacks up, and they're still technically in it.
- 9:39Speaker 1: I mean, they lost two in a row of the Dodgers,
- 9:41Speaker 1: but they traded at the trade deadline Eugenio Chuarez and Nailer,
- 9:48Speaker 1: and technically they're still in it if things go their
- 9:52Speaker 1: way this week. And I don't see it going their way.
- 9:55Speaker 1: But major League Baseball loves this more fan interests. But
- 10:01Speaker 1: it's just been a it's been a bad season for
- 10:03Speaker 1: the Mets, no matter, let's I hope they make it,
- 10:06Speaker 1: but it's been a bad season. It's been a disappointing season,
- 10:09Speaker 1: a very frustrating season.
- 10:11Speaker 2: So all right, but why do I still feel like
- 10:13Speaker 2: it's not as bad as two thousand and seven. I
- 10:15Speaker 2: mean that one just was a meltdown right in front
- 10:17Speaker 2: of our eyes every week.
- 10:19Speaker 1: But Alex, that would have been they still would have
- 10:21Speaker 1: been in the playoffs. I mean, they still have been
- 10:24Speaker 1: in the playoffs if they had there's not they're fighting
- 10:27Speaker 1: for number six. A team with a three hundred and
- 10:30Speaker 1: forty million dollar payroll and paying the luxury tacks are
- 10:33Speaker 1: fighting for the sixth spot. It's different, in my opinion.
- 10:37Speaker 1: It's different my view, It's different than two thousand and seven.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Should they have lost in two thousand and seven, No, No,
- 10:44Speaker 1: I mean I know they had some injuries to the bullpen,
- 10:47Speaker 1: and but they still they had They had a very
- 10:51Speaker 1: favorable schedule in those last seventeen games, and they couldn't
- 10:54Speaker 1: close the deal with a very very good team that
- 10:56Speaker 1: they had that wasn't a team of smoke and mirrors.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I was a very good team.
- 11:04Speaker 2: But let me ask you this, would you take a
- 11:08Speaker 2: Soto forty forty two home run career a year or
- 11:12Speaker 2: would you take him at twenty five or thirty and
- 11:15Speaker 2: then making the playoffs. I'd rather that, But you know,
- 11:17Speaker 2: he did have a record year in that sense.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Well, I mean, the guy's done his job. He has
- 11:21Speaker 1: forty three home runs. Actually, he's third in the National
- 11:25Speaker 1: League in RBIs, he's first, in walks, he's first, and
- 11:29Speaker 1: on base percent first or second and on base percentage.
- 11:32Speaker 1: The guy. I mean, we all wanted to see him
- 11:36Speaker 1: hit seventy five home runs and driving two hundred and
- 11:38Speaker 1: fifty runs. That's not realistic. I never thought he would
- 11:42Speaker 1: playing in city field the majority of his games. I
- 11:45Speaker 1: never thought he would hit forty three home runs this year.
- 11:49Speaker 1: And maybe I'll have a big weekend but the thing
- 11:52Speaker 1: that the Mets have to do, and David Stearns got
- 11:55Speaker 1: away with it last year, and I give him credit
- 11:58Speaker 1: with you know, with the pitching and a Mets pitching lab.
- 12:02Speaker 1: They gotta reevaluate who they go after next year. They
- 12:05Speaker 1: can't go after the Frankie Montasses of the world. We
- 12:08Speaker 1: knew it in December, Alex. We said on this podcast,
- 12:11Speaker 1: what are they doing? They took that thirty four million
- 12:14Speaker 1: dollars and they threw it in dumpster. Frankie Montes' stinks.
- 12:18Speaker 1: He's always stunk. And I hate to talk in such
- 12:22Speaker 1: terms as stink, but that's what he is. He stinks.
- 12:26Speaker 1: And I was a waste the money. You know. I
- 12:30Speaker 1: think they can rebuild all these guys because of analytics.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Yeah no. And then of course the Senga disaster and
- 12:39Speaker 2: that whole thing again this year, and the Clay Holmes thing,
- 12:42Speaker 2: whether he was going to be fit for Starter or not.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I mean, there's been a lot and it's it's not
- 12:49Speaker 2: been pretty, But Lou I have to switch gears for
- 12:51Speaker 2: a second. Although I know he went a weigh in
- 12:53Speaker 2: on which what I just said as well, so feel
- 12:55Speaker 2: free to weigh in on that.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Yeah No, I think say Holmes has done his job.
- 12:59Speaker 1: I mean, they would convert a lifelong well not. I
- 13:02Speaker 1: mean he had started early on in his career in
- 13:04Speaker 1: the minors, and even I think he started a couple
- 13:06Speaker 1: of times with the Pirates. But he's been relieving the
- 13:08Speaker 1: last four or five years. So the conversion of Clay
- 13:11Speaker 1: Holmes from started to reliever I think has been successful.
- 13:14Speaker 1: But again, they got to stretch these guys. I mean,
- 13:16Speaker 1: the other night David Peterson got knocked down the second inning.
- 13:20Speaker 1: I mean, he was fooling No.
- 13:21Speaker 2: One.
- 13:22Speaker 1: And then we had Gary Cohen saying, well, he's never
- 13:24Speaker 1: pitched one hundred and fifty innings? Are you kidding me?
- 13:28Speaker 1: One hundred and fifty innings?
- 13:29Speaker 3: Guys used to pitch two hundred guys used to pitch
- 13:31Speaker 3: two hundred and seventy five, two hundred and Eightyes, I
- 13:35Speaker 3: know things are different because of the way coaches pitching
- 13:40Speaker 3: coaches groomed these guys, and but one hundred and fifty
- 13:45Speaker 3: we got that.
- 13:46Speaker 1: That's a big deal. I mean, please, I don't get it.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Alex all right, Louis, Well, I want to switch gears
- 13:57Speaker 2: here because there's three days, three games for a record
- 14:04Speaker 2: that could possibly be broken. And look, we all know
- 14:07Speaker 2: I love the Yankees, but I'm not I'm gonna, you know,
- 14:11Speaker 2: go like a Yankee fan that things. Judge deserves it
- 14:15Speaker 2: over Cal. The health issue for Judge was evident this year,
- 14:19Speaker 2: and Cal was healthy most of it. And I just
- 14:22Speaker 2: think he is the MVP. Sorry Yankee pans, I just do.
- 14:25Speaker 2: There's just no way around it.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Oh, I agree with you, you know, and I think Judge
- 14:30Speaker 1: is the best player in baseball. I think there's two.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Probably since two thousand, there's two great players in baseball.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Mike Trout and Judge are probably the two best. Akunya
- 14:45Speaker 1: Ronald Lacuna was on his way and he still might
- 14:49Speaker 1: regain that, but he had He's had two back to
- 14:52Speaker 1: back terrible knee taires, but he would also be in
- 14:56Speaker 1: that category. And but again as most valuable, he's a catcher.
- 15:02Speaker 1: He's a switch hitting catcher. He plays baseball toughest position.
- 15:06Speaker 1: And like I said last week, if I had a vote,
- 15:08Speaker 1: I'm voting for Cal Raley. I mean, Judge is gonna
- 15:11Speaker 1: win it again. I mean, hey, only four guys, and
- 15:15Speaker 1: I'm not include I know it's seven, but I'm not
- 15:18Speaker 1: including Sosa McGuire and Bonds. It's the three Yankees, Judge,
- 15:25Speaker 1: the Babe, Marris and cal Raley that alone sixty home
- 15:30Speaker 1: runs to sixty home runs, and the Seattle the Seattle
- 15:33Speaker 1: Baseball Park is not a home run hitting haven. I
- 15:38Speaker 1: would vote, I mean I can't. I think he's winn
- 15:41Speaker 1: it pretty easily. But you hear the analytics, these guys,
- 15:44Speaker 1: all these gas bags, and they who have votes, they
- 15:48Speaker 1: I think they're gonna vote for for judge.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Well they'll say the intentional walks and they'll say the
- 15:54Speaker 2: ops and look, I'm still impressedent Aaron has maintained a
- 15:57Speaker 2: high average most of the season. That's that's a good sign.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Means he's hitting on all cylinders. But you look at
- 16:03Speaker 2: the biggest thing.
- 16:05Speaker 1: He's the best player in baseball. He's he's the most
- 16:09Speaker 1: dangerous offensive player in baseball. He comes up to the plate,
- 16:13Speaker 1: you have to change your strategy for that inning or
- 16:17Speaker 1: whatever the situation is. If it's slate in the game,
- 16:22Speaker 1: there it did. When when he changes your strategy the
- 16:27Speaker 1: opponent's strategy, that's all you need to know. He's the
- 16:31Speaker 1: best player in baseball. I mean, you could talk about
- 16:34Speaker 1: Otani o'tonni struck out one hundred eighty eight, one hundred
- 16:36Speaker 1: eighty seven times this year, and he doesn't and he
- 16:39Speaker 1: doesn't play the field. You know that's true. That's just me.
- 16:43Speaker 1: I mean, like I said, and you know I'm a
- 16:46Speaker 1: Yankee fan, but the judge is the best player in
- 16:48Speaker 1: baseball by he is always.
- 16:50Speaker 2: The best player in This season alone tells them something
- 16:53Speaker 2: that we haven't seen, absolutely all right, And of course
- 16:59Speaker 2: as a catcher, we haven't seen that from that position,
- 17:02Speaker 2: I think in history in a lot of ways. But
- 17:05Speaker 2: moving along here, because I can talk baseball all day,
- 17:08Speaker 2: like I these three games are on my mind before
- 17:12Speaker 2: we move on to football and Jackson Dart Yanks have
- 17:16Speaker 2: to win all three. I don't think you can lose
- 17:18Speaker 2: at least one of these games. That's the way it
- 17:20Speaker 2: feels right now.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Well, I think the Orioles are gonna be tough. I mean, obviously,
- 17:25Speaker 1: the Orioles and Yankees have been playing each other for years,
- 17:28Speaker 1: many times in tough down to the wire pennant races,
- 17:32Speaker 1: so there's a history between the Yankees and the Orioles.
- 17:35Speaker 1: The Orioles have played better the last six weeks. They've
- 17:40Speaker 1: been pitching better than they have been, so they're gonna
- 17:43Speaker 1: tell them, hey, they would love to see to push
- 17:46Speaker 1: the Yankees out of the division and having to play
- 17:49Speaker 1: in that you know when that basically anything goes to
- 17:52Speaker 1: out of three. So I don't think it's an easy
- 17:56Speaker 1: weekend for the Yankees. I don't think it's an easy
- 17:58Speaker 1: weekend for the for the Blue Jay either, because you know,
- 18:01Speaker 1: Kevin Cash and the Jays, even though they're out of it,
- 18:04Speaker 1: they're going to play the game to the to the hilt,
- 18:07Speaker 1: right to the end, just like the Miami Marlins are
- 18:10Speaker 1: gonna do. I mean, there's gonna be a ton of
- 18:12Speaker 1: met fans down in Miami this weekend, and that's gonna
- 18:16Speaker 1: that's gonna juice up the Marlins. It's going to juice
- 18:20Speaker 1: up the Marlin players. So it's a great baseball weekend
- 18:24Speaker 1: and as you said, it's an interesting football Sunday also,
- 18:28Speaker 1: all right.
- 18:28Speaker 2: In two thousand and six, I think it was the
- 18:35Speaker 2: Yangs had a chance to they were in Boston for
- 18:38Speaker 2: the final game of the year, and they went to
- 18:40Speaker 2: Aaron Small or something like that. There are some controversy
- 18:43Speaker 2: toe it didn't start Small maybe that's what it was,
- 18:45Speaker 2: and it was like, what are you doing? It's the
- 18:47Speaker 2: final game of the year. I mean, you have to
- 18:49Speaker 2: start freed on Sunday. I know you're looking at the
- 18:52Speaker 2: playoffs and you want to give them a little rest,
- 18:53Speaker 2: but you've got to start freed on Sunday eight to
- 18:56Speaker 2: help them get the twenty wins. That would be pretty cool.
- 18:59Speaker 2: But because you still might have a division to clinch
- 19:01Speaker 2: on Sunday.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Well, if it comes out to not playing for the week,
- 19:05Speaker 1: you're that that's under consideration. But if the Yankees are
- 19:08Speaker 1: eliminated from winning the division, they can't pitch Freeda on.
- 19:13Speaker 1: They cannot pitch Freeda on a Sunday. If the Yankees
- 19:17Speaker 1: know Tomorrow night that they have no chance of winning
- 19:20Speaker 1: the division. Tomorrow night's Saturday night, as we record this
- 19:23Speaker 1: on Friday night, they cannot pitch MaTx freed On on
- 19:29Speaker 1: a Sunday. They got because he's gonna pitch Tuesday night
- 19:33Speaker 1: against against Garrett Prochet if they're in all likelihood they'll
- 19:36Speaker 1: be playing the Red Sox. So if the Yankees, no,
- 19:38Speaker 1: they're not gonna win the division. Sorry, fore you're not
- 19:41Speaker 1: gonna win your twenty games. And he doesn't want to
- 19:43Speaker 1: win the twenty games. He wants to pitch Tuesday Night.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Uh, well, that's true too. He is thinking about that,
- 19:51Speaker 2: and that's something Judge's tone about this whole. He wants
- 19:54Speaker 2: to win every single game out right. I feel like
- 19:56Speaker 2: he's serious.
- 19:57Speaker 1: I really should Yeah, absolutely, Yeah, determined year.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Note that he wasn't last year. But I feel like
- 20:02Speaker 2: there's a different target after what we saw the last
- 20:05Speaker 2: postseason that he wants to Alex.
- 20:08Speaker 1: The Yankees have made the playoffs twenty six l last
- 20:10Speaker 1: thirty one years. That's remarkable. Yeah, I know six, I know.
- 20:15Speaker 1: I know they've bought a lot of players and I
- 20:18Speaker 1: know all that and I hate all that stuff. You know,
- 20:20Speaker 1: they are, they are the ring leaders in buying players.
- 20:24Speaker 1: But again, he's played a lot of playoff series, and
- 20:29Speaker 1: he's played a lot of playoff series where he has
- 20:31Speaker 1: been unsuccessful. We've talked about it. He has a two
- 20:34Speaker 1: oh five lifetime playoff batting average. But one of these
- 20:38Speaker 1: playoff series, he's gonna, he's gonna, he's gonna mash it.
- 20:42Speaker 1: He's gonna be the hero. So the more, the more
- 20:45Speaker 1: opportunities you have, that's all you can ask for. So again,
- 20:50Speaker 1: we'll see what happens. It should be a very interesting postseason.
- 20:57Speaker 1: It'll be interesting. But the Yankees have the home field
- 20:59Speaker 1: even if they're in two out of three, and that
- 21:00Speaker 1: should help them. And Devin Williams is pitching better Alex,
- 21:05Speaker 1: so he's pitching the better.
- 21:07Speaker 2: And he has his own intro like everybody else does.
- 21:09Speaker 2: He's he's a he's doing well. Finally that he's coming around,
- 21:13Speaker 2: and that's what they need from him to vall Bednar
- 21:16Speaker 2: and the crew in the bullpen.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Uh.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Well, we'll have to see how this whole thing plays out.
- 21:22Speaker 2: All right, let me let me shift gears to Sunday
- 21:25Speaker 2: because obviously the Giants are now going to start Jackson Dark.
- 21:29Speaker 2: And let me tell you something. I thought, you know,
- 21:33Speaker 2: Russell was going to get another week. But at the
- 21:35Speaker 2: same time, after what happened the final drive of the
- 21:38Speaker 2: game against the Chiefs and all the booze, I think
- 21:41Speaker 2: they had to make a move here.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Well, this is my question. They made the draft a
- 21:48Speaker 1: trade to trade up to get Jackson Dark, which is fine,
- 21:52Speaker 1: and I I'm a big proponent in that move. But
- 21:57Speaker 1: my then my question is why did the Giants sign
- 21:59Speaker 1: Russell Wilson in the first place if they were going
- 22:02Speaker 1: to go to uh to ben him? After you know
- 22:06Speaker 1: three games for Jackson dark they did have. They could
- 22:11Speaker 1: have just signed Jamis Winston like that like they did
- 22:15Speaker 1: and start him for three games, and if you bench
- 22:16Speaker 1: him after three or four games, it would be less
- 22:19Speaker 1: I don't want to say controversial, because two weeks ago
- 22:23Speaker 1: the guy threw four hundred and fifty yards in Dallas,
- 22:25Speaker 1: And yes, the Dallas defense may not be very good
- 22:28Speaker 1: at this stage of the season, but four hundred and
- 22:31Speaker 1: fifty yards is still four hundred and fifty yards. So
- 22:34Speaker 1: I'm just surprised that came this early. He must be
- 22:37Speaker 1: They must have a lot of confidence in them. Is
- 22:41Speaker 1: this is this? Did this come from John Mara? I'm
- 22:46Speaker 1: not so sure. Did this come from Joe Shane. I'm
- 22:50Speaker 1: sure that Joe Shane and Brian Dable talked about it,
- 22:53Speaker 1: but they're emphatic. They didn't say he's only starting this week,
- 23:00Speaker 1: said Alex unless he gets hurt, he's the starter for
- 23:02Speaker 1: the rest of the season. So what does that mean
- 23:05Speaker 1: for Russell Wilson? Will he be here next week? Will
- 23:08Speaker 1: he be released like Daniel Jones asked for his release
- 23:12Speaker 1: last year? Will he be traded? The quarterback injuries everywhere
- 23:16Speaker 1: in the league. Is he totally washed up. I'm not
- 23:19Speaker 1: so Russell Wilson is totally washed up. Obviously, he's nowhere
- 23:23Speaker 1: near the player he was five six years ago. Yeah,
- 23:29Speaker 1: it's I mean, Giants have a bunch of tough games
- 23:32Speaker 1: coming up, the Chargers, they got a couple of games
- 23:34Speaker 1: with the Eagles next week. Is a you know, a
- 23:37Speaker 1: soft landing doesn't mean they're gonna win. They're down in
- 23:39Speaker 1: New Orleans, and New Orleans seems to be bad, really bad. So, uh,
- 23:46Speaker 1: you know, it'll be very interesting interesting to see how
- 23:48Speaker 1: Jackson Dart does. Obviously it will juice up the fan base.
- 23:52Speaker 1: I'll be playing at home, it will juice up the
- 23:55Speaker 1: uh other players on the field. But again, he has
- 23:59Speaker 1: to play. He has to play effectively.
- 24:01Speaker 2: So as I don't want to go throwback here, but
- 24:05Speaker 2: I remember when a certain Kurt Warner was benched by
- 24:09Speaker 2: the Giants for an ole miss QB and Eli Manning
- 24:12Speaker 2: and everybody thought it was the most wildest thing the
- 24:14Speaker 2: Giants could do. But then the kid brought the Giants
- 24:18Speaker 2: to Super Bowl years later.
- 24:20Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, but again, those those seven games that
- 24:24Speaker 1: he played, he was bad. They lost six in a row,
- 24:27Speaker 1: and they won that meaningless last season, a season ending
- 24:30Speaker 1: game against Dallas. So you gotta be careful with this.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Also, today's generational rookies are different. I don't know what
- 24:37Speaker 2: it is, but they're not the.
- 24:42Speaker 1: I would agree with that, Alex, I would agree, But
- 24:46Speaker 1: I think they all look they might most of them
- 24:47Speaker 1: are ready to play quicker than some. But look at
- 24:51Speaker 1: look at CJ. Stroud. Two years ago, he was not
- 24:54Speaker 1: only the best rookie in the league, offensive rookie in
- 24:57Speaker 1: the league, he was an MVP candidate, legitimate MVP candidate
- 25:01Speaker 1: for the Houston Texans. As a rookie. He's regressed last
- 25:05Speaker 1: year and the first three games this year. Uh, he's
- 25:08Speaker 1: he's regressed. So oh, you gotta be careful. That's that's all.
- 25:12Speaker 1: That's all I'm saying. And uh, you know, we'll uh we'll,
- 25:17Speaker 1: we'll see what happens on Sunday, but I'll make It'll
- 25:20Speaker 1: make the Sunday afternoon game obviously very interesting.
- 25:25Speaker 2: All right. I gotta say, uh, I feel like this
- 25:29Speaker 2: mid season, even though it's a week three, it feels
- 25:32Speaker 2: like a mid season change already happening. They could have
- 25:36Speaker 2: a great effect. But I'm looking at these two managed,
- 25:39Speaker 2: two coaches who are determining my moods every day and
- 25:43Speaker 2: or every weekend, every day, right, Boone and Dable, and
- 25:47Speaker 2: they're doing what they can to save their jobs. But
- 25:49Speaker 2: but I want to go to Boone. He got into
- 25:52Speaker 2: the playoffs again, and I think Dave will get the
- 25:54Speaker 2: Giants playoffs again. But these coaches are having to navigate
- 25:56Speaker 2: crises both of their seasons. Is sort of parallel to this.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Well, I mean, Boone's had success. No matter what you
- 26:03Speaker 1: want to say about Boone, he has the Yankees in
- 26:05Speaker 1: the playerff almost every year, and he was the manager
- 26:08Speaker 1: of a team even though it was a weak American
- 26:11Speaker 1: League last year. He has on his resume a world
- 26:14Speaker 1: serious appearance. And I don't think the Yankees are firing
- 26:20Speaker 1: Boone unless something catastrophic happens in the playoffs where he
- 26:24Speaker 1: makes an absolutely dumb in game move. As far as
- 26:29Speaker 1: dab Dabele's job is on the line right now, that's
- 26:32Speaker 1: why I think he put Jackson Dart in there again.
- 26:39Speaker 1: You don't want to start over. That's the worst thing,
- 26:42Speaker 1: losing franchises. That's what happens, losing franchises. But if the
- 26:51Speaker 1: remaining fourteen games, we don't see the Giants with the
- 26:54Speaker 1: arrow pointing up in any way, I have a feeling
- 26:58Speaker 1: that they'll be coaching change.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I think that's on the horizon. But we'll
- 27:04Speaker 2: see how Dabile navigates, just like we saw how Boone
- 27:07Speaker 2: is navigating this whole season, and I don't know. And
- 27:12Speaker 2: then on the other side, your manager, Carlos Mendoza, I
- 27:16Speaker 2: felt navigated things better last year than this year. Am
- 27:19Speaker 2: I right in that?
- 27:20Speaker 1: Well, that's because he got better pitching last year than
- 27:23Speaker 1: this year.
- 27:25Speaker 2: But his commentary has been a little different than last
- 27:27Speaker 2: year I feel like too. Like his postgame conference, he's
- 27:30Speaker 2: sort of calling out the players a little more, which
- 27:32Speaker 2: is what you might needed a manager, But it wasn't
- 27:35Speaker 2: the even keel we saw last year.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Well again, remember after June first, they played twenty nine
- 27:41Speaker 1: games over five hundred the rest of the year. Since
- 27:44Speaker 1: the famous June thirteenth date, or the day after Alonso
- 27:50Speaker 1: made that ridiculous throated Senga and injured Senga's hamstring, the
- 27:55Speaker 1: Mets have the fifth worst record in the major leagues.
- 27:58Speaker 1: So there's I mean, those are two different dynamics for
- 28:03Speaker 1: a manager to speak post game or you know, down
- 28:08Speaker 1: the stretch. Now, the thing is Alex the Mets. The
- 28:12Speaker 1: Mets weekend is a disaster. They don't make the playoffs,
- 28:16Speaker 1: which is a which is a realistic possibility. Who's gonna
- 28:20Speaker 1: get the blame? You saw what the Liberty did. They
- 28:23Speaker 1: fired their coach two years ago. They got to the finals.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Last year they won the championship. This year they start
- 28:29Speaker 1: off nine to zero, then they have a bunch of injuries,
- 28:32Speaker 1: they lose in the first round and she's out. So
- 28:36Speaker 1: is somebody gonna take the fall for the Mets, whether
- 28:39Speaker 1: it's in whether they don't make it this weekend or
- 28:42Speaker 1: whether they lose too straight to the Dodgers? Uhuh? Next week?
- 28:47Speaker 1: Is Mendoza going to be the scapegoat? If Stern's looking
- 28:50Speaker 1: to protect his ass? I mean, you know he he's
- 28:54Speaker 1: the one who wants to put these teams together an analytically,
- 28:59Speaker 1: he's the one who's his first base production isn't important? Well,
- 29:03Speaker 1: tell me where would the Mets be without Alonso's thirty
- 29:06Speaker 1: seven home runs and one hundred and twenty three under
- 29:08Speaker 1: twenty four rbs. Where would they be? They would be
- 29:12Speaker 1: down there with the White Sox.
- 29:14Speaker 2: You're right, and Alonso carried this team a lot of
- 29:17Speaker 2: the season in addition to being the now all time
- 29:19Speaker 2: Mets franchise home run.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Here.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Hey, by the way, I got to tell you Howie
- 29:24Speaker 2: Rose is on a podcast with Joel Sherman and John
- 29:28Speaker 2: Haemon saying he has at least another year in him. Man,
- 29:31Speaker 2: I get kind of sad when I hear all these
- 29:33Speaker 2: guys wrapping it up. But I'm glad how he's still
- 29:36Speaker 2: doing this for at least another year.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Well on how we have some medical issues. He's a great,
- 29:42Speaker 1: great broadcaster. I mean, he really is. He should be
- 29:48Speaker 1: considered for the Baseball Hall of Fame. And yeah, it's
- 29:54Speaker 1: gonna be sad to see him leave Mets radio because,
- 29:58Speaker 1: as the great Hall of Fame broad caster Bob Murphy
- 30:01Speaker 1: called Mets games for all those years, said we paint
- 30:04Speaker 1: the word picture on radio. And Howie Rose definitely a
- 30:09Speaker 1: disciple of of of Lindsay Nelson, Bob Murphy and Ralph
- 30:14Speaker 1: Kiner from those houseame days of Mets broadcasting. He definitely
- 30:18Speaker 1: learned that that system. And he's a great he's a
- 30:21Speaker 1: great forecast. I hope, I hope he does games for
- 30:23Speaker 1: another five years. All right, Well, I got to tell
- 30:26Speaker 1: you my history with him as generational.
- 30:27Speaker 2: I mean I was up in the booth with him
- 30:29Speaker 2: as a kid before an Orioles met game at batting practice.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Then he saw me in the Yankees Jersey met at
- 30:37Speaker 2: Yankee Sames saying you're confusing me, Alex, And overall I
- 30:42Speaker 2: just kept listening to him over the years. I remember
- 30:44Speaker 2: listening to him at the apartment on East forty fourth Street,
- 30:47Speaker 2: and it just he's a household name, a household voice.
- 30:50Speaker 2: And as you know, I got to interview him as
- 30:52Speaker 2: well when I was at Queen's College. So he's been
- 30:54Speaker 2: very special, not just on the air, but as a
- 30:57Speaker 2: person and part of our you know, extended family, if
- 31:00Speaker 2: you will. And I still email with him time to time,
- 31:04Speaker 2: so I got to reach out and just check in
- 31:05Speaker 2: and seeah, well.
- 31:07Speaker 1: The two most famous Queen's College alums, Howie Rose and
- 31:11Speaker 1: Alex Garrett.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Now Paul Simon is up there and signed b oh all.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Right, okay, yeah, we'll sneak him in there.
- 31:19Speaker 2: I'll take it. And of course I'll tell you that
- 31:22Speaker 2: one quick story. In twenty seventeen, when I was covering
- 31:25Speaker 2: it the Mets for the Queen's Gazette, he came over
- 31:29Speaker 2: and spent twenty minutes after or right before first pitch,
- 31:32Speaker 2: spent twenty minutes with me shooting the breeze and at
- 31:34Speaker 2: the time I was at Salem, you know, four years in.
- 31:37Speaker 2: He want to find out how I was doing. So
- 31:40Speaker 2: he's really taken me under his wing a law. But
- 31:42Speaker 2: even though we don't talk a lot, I just feel
- 31:44Speaker 2: his presence, you know.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Yeah, No, he's a good man.
- 31:51Speaker 2: All right, we gotta get to hockey because obviously we
- 31:53Speaker 2: real quick because obviously we have the preseason underway. But
- 31:56Speaker 2: more importantly, your Islanders have made some interesting moves with
- 32:00Speaker 2: regards to their Hall of Fame.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I saw that, Alex, and they're going to uh
- 32:10Speaker 1: put Pat Lafontaine, a great player, a member of the
- 32:14Speaker 1: Hockey Hall of Fame, is going to be inducted into
- 32:17Speaker 1: the Islanders Hall of Fame. Finally, before a game against
- 32:21Speaker 1: the Tampa Bay Lightning, a great player, he scored one
- 32:24Speaker 1: of the most famous goals in Islander history, the incredible
- 32:27Speaker 1: four overtime Easter Epic against the Washington Capitals, which ended
- 32:35Speaker 1: on East started on Easter Saturday, ended on about two
- 32:38Speaker 1: o'clock on Easter Sunday morning. He was he was a
- 32:44Speaker 1: great player, one of the great, one of the first
- 32:46Speaker 1: great American players. Uh. The Islanders actually made a trade
- 32:52Speaker 1: with the with the then Colorado Rockies, not to be
- 32:55Speaker 1: confused with the Baseball Colorado Rockies, for their first round
- 33:02Speaker 1: draft pick. They traded one of their longtime defense from
- 33:04Speaker 1: Bob Lorimer and another player I forget who. I think
- 33:07Speaker 1: it might have been Dave Cameron for the Colorado Rockies
- 33:10Speaker 1: first round pick. The Rockies were terrible. They should not
- 33:13Speaker 1: have been giving up first round picks. So the Islands
- 33:16Speaker 1: had the third pick in the draft a couple of
- 33:18Speaker 1: years later, and they picked Pat Lafontaine. And he played
- 33:24Speaker 1: in the finals when the drive for five that fifth
- 33:27Speaker 1: when we were going for five cups in a row.
- 33:32Speaker 1: He played like the last twenty games and he's and
- 33:36Speaker 1: he was very effective right off the bat. But the
- 33:39Speaker 1: Islanders lost the finals to the Edmonton Oilers, and he
- 33:44Speaker 1: had he had a tremendous career, hadn't had a contract dispute,
- 33:51Speaker 1: and the Islanders traded and Bill Tory trade them to
- 33:53Speaker 1: the Buffalo Sabers for Pierre Jhon and a couple of
- 33:56Speaker 1: other players. I think Benoa Hope might have been that
- 33:58Speaker 1: trade also, and Pierre Turjon two years later scored fifty
- 34:02Speaker 1: eight goals. He's a member of the Hockey Hall of
- 34:04Speaker 1: Fame also, So it was a trade that helped both teams,
- 34:06Speaker 1: and the Islanders got to the Stanley Cup Eastern Conference
- 34:09Speaker 1: Finals in ninety three, where they lost to the eventual
- 34:14Speaker 1: champion Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canaines, who are who's who
- 34:21Speaker 1: are led by their now coach Patrick Waugh who beat
- 34:25Speaker 1: him in five games, and then they ended up being
- 34:27Speaker 1: the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup finals. But
- 34:30Speaker 1: La Fontaine deserves every accolade that's coming to him. A
- 34:34Speaker 1: great player, and it's good to see the Islanders bring
- 34:37Speaker 1: one of their old greats back. But besides the Islanders,
- 34:43Speaker 1: the New Jersey Devils have not signed Luke Hughes yet
- 34:47Speaker 1: and he's not in camp. And you know, you just
- 34:51Speaker 1: hear a lot of rumors of what's going on with
- 34:55Speaker 1: the Devils, that Dougie Hamilton might be on a trade block.
- 34:59Speaker 1: He has a he has a nine million dollar cap
- 35:01Speaker 1: hit and I believe he has two more years left
- 35:03Speaker 1: on his deal. You hear all this talk about Quinn Ughes,
- 35:07Speaker 1: the Hughes brothers wanting to play together and Quinn Us
- 35:11Speaker 1: is going to be a free agent at the end
- 35:12Speaker 1: of this year. I don't know. Could could Doug Hamilton
- 35:16Speaker 1: be part of a trade to Vancouver where Quinn Us
- 35:20Speaker 1: would be coming back to the Devils sometime this year
- 35:24Speaker 1: at the trade deadline. I don't know. I mean, it's
- 35:27Speaker 1: just just a lot of just a lot of talk
- 35:29Speaker 1: going on even here, talk that that at the Penguins,
- 35:34Speaker 1: who are in total rebuild mode, might offer Sidney Crosby
- 35:39Speaker 1: up and he could obviously Crosby can still play. Would
- 35:43Speaker 1: the Devils be interested in getting somebody like that. Uh,
- 35:47Speaker 1: I don't think that the Rangers or Islanders would be
- 35:50Speaker 1: interested in in Crosby. Uh. The Islands obviously were a
- 35:54Speaker 1: young team and uh they've had cal Richie who they
- 35:58Speaker 1: got for brock Nelson had a good camp. I don't
- 36:01Speaker 1: think he's going to start this season with the Islands.
- 36:03Speaker 1: But that's somebody look at when the season begins, so
- 36:07Speaker 1: you know, hockey season's here. But keep an eye on
- 36:11Speaker 1: the the U's brother situation, both Luke who is unsigned
- 36:16Speaker 1: and not in camp, and uh the quinn u situation.
- 36:21Speaker 1: The brothers have said they want to play on the
- 36:23Speaker 1: same team, so whether.
- 36:25Speaker 2: They wanted to play with their third brother, who everybody
- 36:28Speaker 2: seems to forget about it in the Upper Upper West,
- 36:31Speaker 2: you know, up Northwest.
- 36:33Speaker 1: I mean, you know, he's literally the first or second
- 36:36Speaker 1: best defenseman in the league. And he's won, you know,
- 36:39Speaker 1: he's won accolades, he's won he's been first team, he's
- 36:43Speaker 1: won trophies. But the old brothers want to play player
- 36:47Speaker 1: on the same team, whether it's the Devil's whether it's
- 36:49Speaker 1: van I don't think it's gonna be Vancouver. So we'll see,
- 36:53Speaker 1: we'll see what what what happens there, will that will
- 36:56Speaker 1: Luke Hughes got a three year bridge Bridge deal, we
- 36:59Speaker 1: get an eight year deal. I think that's what he
- 37:00Speaker 1: probably will get. But they haven't signed him yet, and
- 37:04Speaker 1: the opening day is October eighth or ninth, so it's
- 37:07Speaker 1: not that far away. Alex.
- 37:08Speaker 2: I know the Rangers October seventh, the hundredth campaign, one
- 37:11Speaker 2: hundred season, and pretty special to be witnessing that. We
- 37:16Speaker 2: all know the Giants one hundred went south. But the
- 37:19Speaker 2: hockey is a very different sport than the Rangers seem
- 37:22Speaker 2: to always it's got for last year. They always seemed
- 37:24Speaker 2: to be in the thick of it. So we'll love
- 37:26Speaker 2: to see. But for now, Lou, I got to jump
- 37:28Speaker 2: back on the air, so I wanted to take a
- 37:30Speaker 2: long time to talk with you tonight. I'm excited we
- 37:32Speaker 2: did Terminola's take for this week. We'll have a more
- 37:35Speaker 2: extended edition next week because I we still got to
- 37:38Speaker 2: get to your Jets and what they're gonna do moving forward.
- 37:41Speaker 2: But right now, the focus seems to be on Dart,
- 37:44Speaker 2: the Yanks going for the division, the Mets hanging on
- 37:47Speaker 2: by a thread, and the new threads for the one
- 37:50Speaker 2: hundred season all seemed to be the storylines this year.
- 37:53Speaker 1: This week, Louis, yes, you hit the nail on the head.
- 37:56Speaker 1: The Mets are hanging on by a thread.
- 37:59Speaker 2: All right, Well let's see what happens Inami and I
- 38:03Speaker 2: think it's funny right in two thousand and seven who
- 38:06Speaker 2: they have to face against in that final weekend and
- 38:08Speaker 2: brawl with Miami, well Florida then, and they were a
- 38:12Speaker 2: different looking team then, but the sentiment remains the same.
- 38:15Speaker 2: I think it'll be a rivalry weekend for sure.
- 38:18Speaker 1: Absolutely, Alex, thank you for having me as always, I
- 38:21Speaker 1: much much appreciated.
- 38:22Speaker 2: All Right, that's lou Terminilo Terminela's take on One Leg
- 38:25Speaker 2: Up alex Sports,
