- 0:15Speaker 2: And here we are two days prior to kick off,
- 0:20and uh, let's get right back to it. Logorn's head
- 0:24coach Steve Sarkisian from the media Zoom today.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Okay, exciting week. You know, I think, you know, from
- 0:31our perspective, you know, when you have two weeks to
- 0:33prepare for a game like this, it's kind of a
- 0:36crescendo as you as you build to the ballgame and
- 0:40now having Thursday's practice in the books, and you know,
- 0:44having a walk through Friday and then head up to Dallas.
- 0:46I know our team is really excited about the opportunity.
- 0:49It's a great game to be part of, as we
- 0:51touched on all week. But I'm very I was told
- 0:54they just got done telling the team. I was really
- 0:56proud of the way they've prepared this week. You know,
- 0:57they've been very focused. I've had great intensity. We we
- 1:01had you know, some really good physical and fast practices.
- 1:05But in the end of this week, you know, I
- 1:06think they're really dialed into the details, which is going
- 1:09to be you know, really important in a game like.
- 1:11Speaker 4: This, Steve, not just with Quinn, but with any of
- 1:14your players. How do you determine a players healthy enough
- 1:18to play?
- 1:18Speaker 5: Is that?
- 1:19Speaker 4: How much of a collaborative effort is that between you,
- 1:21the players, your training staff? How how what's that process?
- 1:24Speaker 5: Like?
- 1:26Speaker 3: I think they're all in some way, shape or form
- 1:29a little bit different, right, Injuries are different. Player history
- 1:34of coming back from an injury is different. You know.
- 1:37I think there's obviously a medical component to this of
- 1:40when he is cleared by doctors to play. I mean,
- 1:42whether I think he can play or not, he has
- 1:44to be cleared to play. And then and then I think,
- 1:47then it goes to myself, if you know what is
- 1:50my I tell me not only from a physical ability,
- 1:53but also from a mental ability to be ready to
- 1:57go play. I think a lot of times players can
- 1:59come off injuries and be physically ready to play, but
- 2:04mentally still have some things in there that that are
- 2:07you know, causing hesitation or not, you know, not playing
- 2:11one hundred percent full speed and that that can be
- 2:14dangerous too. And so I guess there's science involved, there's
- 2:18gut instinct involved, there's psyche involved, there's a there's a
- 2:21lot that goes into it. But in the end, we're
- 2:23just trying to instill confidence in the player that that
- 2:25he's more than capable of going and doing it. But
- 2:28then there's the other player that will tell you he
- 2:29feels great just because he can't wait to get back
- 2:31out there, and the doctor say, you know what, he's
- 2:33not quite ready to go, And so that's where that
- 2:35dialogue comes in. But I do agree with you it's
- 2:38a collaborative effort, Steve.
- 2:39Speaker 6: When facing a guy like Hawkins who's athletic back there,
- 2:41I was wonder if you could just talk about rush
- 2:43lane integrity and how crucial that is to have success,
- 2:46and if possible, just maybe the difference between facing a
- 2:49guy who looks to use his legs to scramble versus
- 2:51a guy who's looking to throw in that process.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I think there's a lot of layers
- 2:57to this, you know, because I think coverages can dictate
- 3:02maybe how your rush lanes go. You know, when when
- 3:05you're playing zone coverage, sometimes you can you can be
- 3:08a little more aggressive with trying to really rush the
- 3:11quarterback because the majority of the eyes of the defenders
- 3:15in the secondary are on the quarterback and they can
- 3:17react if he does escape the pocket and you can
- 3:19get him on the ground. Where you have to be
- 3:21really careful with your rush lanes is when you're playing
- 3:24man coverage because when you're a man coverage and you
- 3:27get out of a rush lane and you give the
- 3:29quarterback somewhere to escape when he goes to run, all
- 3:32of those guys in the secondary's backs are turned to
- 3:35the quarterback because they're guarding somebody. And now that can
- 3:37create you know, longer yardage type runs. You know. The
- 3:40other the other way you can do that is to
- 3:42is to play man try to really rush the quarterback
- 3:45and have a spy where you can keep some somebody's
- 3:48eyes on the quarterback and when he does go to
- 3:50go to scramble, you can try to get him on
- 3:52the ground. And so, you know, I think I think
- 3:54one of the keys in games like this is you
- 3:56can't you have to continue to mix your looks, right.
- 3:59You can't just keep throwing a fastball. You gotta throw
- 4:02a curve, you gotta throw a change up. You got
- 4:04to keep switching it up or or a quarterback can
- 4:07find that rhythm, you know, the guys that that that
- 4:12that drop back and then extend to scramble as opposed
- 4:15to guys that drop back to extend to throw. It's
- 4:18pretty I don't want to say it's easy when when
- 4:21they're one or the other. When it's really hard is
- 4:23when they do both. Because now you now players are
- 4:27really compromised of do I do I come up and
- 4:29try to get him on the ground or do I
- 4:31stay in coverage? And so those guys are really the
- 4:34most dangerous of that because they can do either or.
- 4:37And I actually think Michael Hawkins is one of those guys.
- 4:40You know, he has plenty of arm talent that can
- 4:41that can make those throws when when plays get extended,
- 4:44but clearly he's he's very dangerous with his legs when
- 4:47he tucks it and runs.
- 4:48Speaker 7: Coach, good morning. The NCAA released new n l I
- 4:52guidelines this week, and I'm curious what you think of that,
- 4:55what impact that has on you guys as the coaches.
- 4:58And also shortening transfer window from forty five to thirty days,
- 5:02how does that impact a coaching staff.
- 5:05Speaker 3: I gotta be honest with you, I haven't read any
- 5:07of it. I'm gonna I'm gonna look into it a
- 5:08little bit this afternoon when I have a little bit
- 5:10of free time. I try to keep the main thing
- 5:14the main thing. And you know, you know, CDC has
- 5:18done done a good job of keep me abreast of
- 5:20some of the decisions that are coming. Our compliance department has,
- 5:23our recruiting department has. But at the end of the day,
- 5:26they also know I'm trying to game plan and get
- 5:28ready for this ballgame. But but I'll probably have a
- 5:31little more dialogue with them this afternoon when I have
- 5:34a little bit of downtime to h to kind of,
- 5:37you know, drill down on this a little bit more.
- 5:38But so I don't have I don't have a great
- 5:40comment for you on that.
- 5:41Speaker 8: Hey, Steve, whenever Quinn goes through the NFL draft process
- 5:45and starts meeting with pro personnel, do you envision him
- 5:48having some issue in terms of being labeled injury prone
- 5:52just given the amount of injuries that he's had throughout
- 5:53his career.
- 5:55Speaker 3: I don't necessarily think so. You know, sometimes injuries have
- 6:00happened because they happen, you know. I mean, you know,
- 6:03when a guy gets pile drived on to his shoulder,
- 6:05there's a pretty good chance. It doesn't matter who you are,
- 6:07your shoulder is probably gonna be sore to some capacity.
- 6:11Or when you get pile drived and you're clavigal gets
- 6:14gets popped. I mean, I don't I don't know many
- 6:17guys that would have withstood that hit from from Dallas
- 6:19Turner a couple of years ago. That that was an
- 6:21odd hit. And and I've seen that injury, that same
- 6:25injury Quinn had that year. Jalen Hurts had as well.
- 6:29Oddly enough, you know, he has the oblique strain there
- 6:31a few weeks ago, and I'm watching the game the
- 6:33other night, Derek Carr is out of the game oblique strain.
- 6:35You know, So things happen in football, you know, our
- 6:38sport is our sport. I think more importantly is is
- 6:41they monitor his ability to come back and how he
- 6:43comes back and how he plays. And I think Quinn
- 6:46has shown over his time that when he's been injured,
- 6:49he's engaged, he comes back and he plays really good
- 6:51football coming off of injury. And so that's this to me,
- 6:55is another chance for him to go show that he
- 6:57can do that here moving forward.
- 6:59Speaker 9: Yees, Steve, if you could speak to how quickly your
- 7:02plan has come together, and you know, rising to number one,
- 7:07you know, just barely into your fourth year, has that
- 7:10even exceeded your expectations? And as Quinn definitely started.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Uh yeah, Quinn's gonna start Saturday. I'm to go backwards.
- 7:18That was it. That was the easy answer. I don't
- 7:23I don't know, you know, I I don't know if
- 7:26I ever had just a timetable on when we were
- 7:30going to be, you know, competing for championships. I definitely
- 7:34wanted it to happen sooner than it did, I'll be
- 7:36truth be told. You know. You know, you go through
- 7:39some of those the tough roads of year one and
- 7:42and some of the ups and downs in year two,
- 7:44and you're thinking, man, we're so close. Uh and what
- 7:47would that you know, year or two have looked like
- 7:49if we had uh maybe not lost that lead at
- 7:52Oklahoma State, you know, and and what what would that
- 7:55season have looked like? But to think last last season,
- 8:00to go twelve and two, to be conference champs and
- 8:02to be a play away from competing for a national championship,
- 8:06that felt like that felt right to me. That felt
- 8:08like that's this is where we're supposed to be. And
- 8:11now we got to try to take the necessary steps
- 8:13to try and to go finish it. But that's that
- 8:15every year, there's so many other new challenges that present themselves.
- 8:19And so for this journey this season in twenty twenty four,
- 8:23to get off to the start that it has, I'm
- 8:26like I said, I'm proud of our coaches, our staff,
- 8:27our players that we are in this position, but we
- 8:31have there's such a long way to go, you know,
- 8:33it's even it's even hard to see the light at
- 8:36the end of the tunnel for the season, and we
- 8:38know how difficult and how challenging our conference schedule is,
- 8:42and now we're navigating different waters with with what an
- 8:46extended college football playoff could look like. That I just
- 8:49try to appreciate the way we prepare and the way
- 8:52we play week in and week out, and I try
- 8:54to appreciate the culture and the leadership that we have
- 8:58and the and the intent in which our guys come
- 9:00to work every day, and that that, to me, is
- 9:02what I envisioned. You know that, I think the record
- 9:05and the rankings and all those other things are a
- 9:07byproduct of what we put in every single day. And
- 9:10so that part I'm proud of and you know, when
- 9:12we'll see what the end result looks like. There, you know,
- 9:14at the end of the.
- 9:15Speaker 5: Season, coach the piggyback off of Kurt's question there talk
- 9:19about you know, we're enamored with ourselves. When you think
- 9:23about the week and the preparation that the team goes through.
- 9:26Are there some specifics that you see the team doing
- 9:30outside of your coaching. They maybe took your coaching now
- 9:33they're taking it to another level in preparation, either mentally physically.
- 9:37And are there some players that just kind of rise
- 9:39above that kind of set the standard for everybody else?
- 9:42Speaker 3: Well, I mean some some simple things I look for,
- 9:45like when I see them at lunch or when I
- 9:48see him walking through the building, what are they talking about? Right?
- 9:52Are they talking about you know, hey, how we're going
- 9:55to play a certain coverage or I can't wait for
- 9:57for Sark to call this, or man, you know, I
- 10:00was studying number five this week. Here's what you know
- 10:03when they're talking about football generally, that that gives me
- 10:06a sense and a feel of like, Okay, they're they're
- 10:08engaged in what we have going. I think the other
- 10:10thing I look at is the energy that we bring
- 10:13every morning You know, we start with these guys every
- 10:16day at seven fifteen. You know, what kind of energy
- 10:18do they have in the team meeting when we walk in,
- 10:21what kind of energy do they have when they take
- 10:22the field at practice for pre practice? You know what
- 10:26a stretch feel like and look like, and so all
- 10:28those things kind of give me a sign of like, man,
- 10:30these guys are engaged. And then the ultimately it comes
- 10:33down to how do we practice? You know, do what
- 10:35is our you know, are we do we have the
- 10:37right mental intensity to reduce the number of missed assignments?
- 10:42Are we finishing runs? Are we finishing blocks? Do we
- 10:45have Does it sound loud on defense because we're communicating
- 10:49at such a high level, right, There's a lot of
- 10:51layers to that, but but all adds up to what
- 10:54to your point, it's that are we preparing the way
- 10:57that that is of importance, that that we've value you know,
- 11:00we value preparation, We value practice because I think that
- 11:04that's what instills belief and confidence in what we're trying
- 11:07to go do.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Hey, Steve, just with Michael current on the injury report,
- 11:11what's the what's the concern level there?
- 11:13Speaker 3: And then what's the plan if he can't go.
- 11:15Speaker 10: Uh uh.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Ian Ratliff will punt if he can't go, and then
- 11:20obviously you know Michael's still a holder too, so you
- 11:23would be the backup there if he can go as well.
- 11:26Speaker 11: Steve, you mentioned on Monday about Jake, you know, leaving
- 11:30the game last year and Connor playing, and we talked
- 11:34with Jake about, you know, anticipation for this game considering
- 11:37he didn't get the chance last year. Have you noticed
- 11:39any difference in him and how he prepares or is
- 11:42he trying to kind of keep it same old, same old,
- 11:44even though you know last year happened for him.
- 11:48Speaker 3: He feels pretty same old to me.
- 11:50Speaker 11: You know.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Jake's uh, he's a he's a really good leader because
- 11:55you know, when it's football and he's you know, in
- 11:58his hands on that ball and he's made in the calls,
- 12:01he's very intense, I mean, very very intense player. In
- 12:04pre practice when we're working quarterback center exchanges, you know,
- 12:08he's loose, he's laughing, he's having fun. And then when
- 12:11you come to meetings and we're working third down protections
- 12:14and all the calls, I mean, he's dialed in and
- 12:15it's like he's almost an extension of Coach Flood. So
- 12:19he's a he's a really well versed guy that I
- 12:23think is for me, it's calming. You know when I
- 12:25see Jake like that, he's in great spirits, but yet
- 12:28he can he can shift gears kind of within the
- 12:31day or within even practice. That makes me feel good
- 12:35because that tells me he's not over the top in
- 12:37one direction or the other. And then I think that
- 12:39that kind of permeates throughout the offensive line. Steve Guy's
- 12:43just curious about what were your final thoughts or Coach
- 12:47Flood's thoughts to the offensive line about OU's pass rush
- 12:52something they do really well. Yeah, they're a great pass
- 12:54rush team. I think one they've got good players, and
- 12:58two they've got good scheme and and and three they
- 13:01play hard. You know, they play with play with really
- 13:03good effort. And so you put all three of those
- 13:05things together. Uh, they do a heck of a job
- 13:07of getting to the quarterback and because of that, they
- 13:10do a heck of a job of creating havoc, which
- 13:13I think leads to the opportunistic defense that they have
- 13:15where they create turnovers. So a lot of what they
- 13:18do defensively starts up front. And that's kind of been
- 13:21a staple of coach Venables defenses throughout the years, you know,
- 13:24regardless of the school he was at. Uh, it's always
- 13:26started up front. And you know this, this group's not
- 13:30not much different than that. You know, they they do
- 13:32a heck of a job of creating pressure internally, they
- 13:34do a good job coming off the edge, They do
- 13:37a good job with their pressure packages and and a
- 13:39variety of those that they have. So there's layers to
- 13:42what they do. And we know we've got to work
- 13:44cut out for us this week with that.
- 13:47Speaker 12: Hey, coach, what's the the SEC rule as far as
- 13:52how many guys can travel to a neutral site? And
- 13:55what's that number compared to what it looks like in
- 13:58the normal season?
- 13:59Speaker 13: Uh?
- 13:59Speaker 12: And then what you know for regular road games, and
- 14:02how does that impact your preparation as far as special
- 14:04teams or anything as relates to that number that.
- 14:08Speaker 3: There is no special consideration for neutral site. So we
- 14:11get as a road team in the SEC, we get
- 14:13to travel seventy four. Players a home team in the
- 14:16SEC you get to travel eighty. We're obviously the road
- 14:20team this year, so we get to travel seventy four.
- 14:23And then the only caveat that is different from what
- 14:27we had in the Big Twelve. In the Big Twelve,
- 14:29we were able to we were then able to bring
- 14:31the remainder of our team the day of the game
- 14:34and they could be on the sidelines. And this year's
- 14:37format with the SEC, we're not allowed to do that.
- 14:39So so a little unfortunate, but we'll have seventy four
- 14:42guys and it really doesn't impact us too too much.
- 14:46You know, there's a couple of guys you'd really like
- 14:48to bring that could you know, maybe be you know,
- 14:51a second or third team guy on teams, but we
- 14:53just have to adjust accordingly.
- 14:56Speaker 13: Hey, Steve, you and Quinn were basically a freshman the
- 15:00Red River Rivory your first and you did your first
- 15:03one together. What were those conversations like with a young
- 15:06quarterback playing in that kind of atmosphere and what what
- 15:11did you have to remind yourself because it was your
- 15:13first one as well.
- 15:15Speaker 3: My first one was with Casey and he's on the
- 15:17other team.
- 15:17Speaker 13: Now, Yeah, yeah, Quinn about Quinn then, ye, Quinn.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Quinn's was a little unique in that he is coming
- 15:28off the injury, and but I knew how much this
- 15:31game had meant to him growing up right in South
- 15:34Lake and uh, havn't been to the game and sitting
- 15:37in the stands watching this game. My big thing for
- 15:41him was just relax and go have fun, you know,
- 15:43and go play ball. And we had a pretty good
- 15:45team and we were playing pretty good at that that
- 15:48juncture of the season, and so I thought I thought
- 15:51he did that. He had a heck of a game.
- 15:53I joked with him. In the middle of the game,
- 15:55he threw one of the worst interceptions I've ever seen.
- 15:57He was trying to throw the ball away and it
- 15:59kind of just fluttered in the air and I actually
- 16:01thought it hit the wire from it from the TV
- 16:03camera that it but it didn't. So we're able. I
- 16:06think that's one thing Quinn and I are able to
- 16:08do that a lot of times doesn't get seen. Like
- 16:11we're able to laugh things off. And I think that
- 16:13that's important for a guy like him, and really for
- 16:16Arch for that matter. Like we're a very intense quarterback
- 16:19room and we coach them hard, but we also have
- 16:21the ability to kind of laugh at ourselves and have
- 16:24fun with things, and and and that, and that ended
- 16:27up itself. I think in games like this is really helpful.
- 16:31When the intensity is so high around you, the emotions
- 16:34are so high around you, the quarterback has got to
- 16:36be that steady see. You know, he has got to
- 16:38be that even keel guy that can that can remain
- 16:41calm and keep his poison composure in the midst of
- 16:45all the intensity.
- 16:46Speaker 14: Hey, Steve, kind of an off the wall one here
- 16:49for you. I'm working on a story on your Spanish
- 16:52broadcast crew and I was listening to the call. I
- 16:55heard you do an ad for him. I'm wondering if
- 16:58you were able to do that off the rip or
- 17:00if you had to read it, and do you ever
- 17:03go back and and kind of listen to the energy
- 17:05those guys bring.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Let me say this the fact that you asked, did
- 17:09I have to read it or did I let it?
- 17:11Let it come off the rip? I'm so pumped about
- 17:14because I had to read that. I had to have
- 17:16it narrated to me for me to say it my Spanish.
- 17:20I wish was better than it is, but uh, I've
- 17:23listened to it a couple of times and I cringe
- 17:26it like gosh, I should be better at this. But
- 17:28what a great telecast they do, and and the covers
- 17:32they give us and just the energy they provide. So
- 17:35but no, I I had a halfway read it and
- 17:37have it halfway kind of you know, read to me,
- 17:40and then I was kind of repeating it back.
- 17:44Speaker 10: Hey, Steve, I know Big Humans has been a big
- 17:47part of how you guys have built this program. I'm
- 17:49curious what are the traits you look for, whether it's
- 17:54like arm length, explosive and strength in your offensive line
- 17:57and also the trees you look for defensive line, and
- 17:59that led you two guys like Kelvin Banks or DJ
- 18:03Campbell or Collins meant yeah.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Man, I think one is the first measurable is the size, right,
- 18:08there's height, weight, Then do they have the ability to
- 18:12bend because you can be a really big guy, but
- 18:15if you can't bend, then you probably can't move. And
- 18:18you're always looking for initial quickness, lateral quickness, change a
- 18:21direction and then when we get them, you know obviously
- 18:24you know arm length matters, hand size matters. Uh, those
- 18:27are all those are all things that that you know
- 18:29through you know historically, you know when you when you
- 18:32look at the NFL draft and you look at the
