- 0:00Speaker 1: Is this a sponsored feature, Gina, It's.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Brought to you by This is Ingenious dot com slash
- 0:07Speaker 2: Live to see what the donut has in store for us.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Well, the donutcritic Bentley is here. These aren't donuts. This
- 0:19Speaker 3: is an ice cream novelty.
- 0:21Speaker 4: It is an ice cream novelty. What we are playing
- 0:24Speaker 4: today is Feast or Flop.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Wow.
- 0:27Speaker 4: So these are viral Chinese ice creams. So we've we've
- 0:31Speaker 4: tried a lot of things that are feast or Flop,
- 0:33Speaker 4: so I brought in a lot of things that are
- 0:35Speaker 4: somewhat viral. A lot of has been croissant wise, but
- 0:40Speaker 4: today it is ice cream.
- 0:41Speaker 5: So you get ice cream for breakfast.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Cream so it's almost like a mochi.
- 0:46Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 0:47Speaker 2: So they're Chinese.
- 0:48Speaker 5: What's the company?
- 0:50Speaker 4: I'm not going to profess to know these, but you yeah,
- 0:53Speaker 4: those are Ico. So there's a few different brands now.
- 0:55Speaker 4: So these ice creams really hit our socials probably a
- 1:00Speaker 4: year and a half to two years ago.
- 1:02Speaker 5: I jumped on it and I was able to try these.
- 1:05Speaker 4: You can get them at China, the Chinatown Supermarket on
- 1:08Speaker 4: thirty three ninety South and State or h Mart out
- 1:12Speaker 4: in West Jordan.
- 1:13Speaker 5: So how does one go about.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Yeah, this isn't a traditional ice cream where it's like
- 1:20Speaker 4: just packaged in like shrink wrap from the US. So yes, Carrie,
- 1:24Speaker 4: you have one, and it's clipped on the bottom, so
- 1:27Speaker 4: you got to unclip the bottom.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Unclip the bottom like that.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Yeah, and then that slips out. So now you have
- 1:36Speaker 4: a handle so if you can, ah, you.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Can wooden't handle traditional wooden handle there, yep, and then
- 1:43Speaker 2: you just pull the Now that the ice cream is
- 1:45Speaker 2: shaped like the fruit that it is flavored, yes, like
- 1:49Speaker 2: so if you're looking at Carr, very artistic, he got
- 1:52Speaker 2: orange and it looks like kind of like a half
- 1:54Speaker 2: an orange sitting there there.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Mine looks like I'm almost eating mango.
- 1:59Speaker 4: I've a actually really enjoyed watching we've all try to
- 2:02Speaker 4: unpackage those.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:04Speaker 5: Yeah, pulled out straight off there you go. You're supposed
- 2:06Speaker 5: to keep, supposed to keep.
- 2:07Speaker 2: The sleeves because look, it has a little sleeve so
- 2:11Speaker 2: your hand doesn't get covered in ice cream. It protects
- 2:14Speaker 2: your hands.
- 2:15Speaker 4: See yeah, so if it drips, yeah, okay, so there, Yeah,
- 2:20Speaker 4: it's ingenious, like you said, but they have a new
- 2:24Speaker 4: couple of new flavors that I've had that I haven't
- 2:26Speaker 4: had that I just barely picked up. One was grape,
- 2:29Speaker 4: and that's what you ate, Gina, I like it. Yeah,
- 2:31Speaker 4: the grape was really good. And then the orange, the
- 2:33Speaker 4: mandarin I hadn't had before it as well.
- 2:35Speaker 1: It's quite tasty. It's refreshing.
- 2:37Speaker 5: It's very refreshing. Yeah.
- 2:40Speaker 4: So also there's a lemon, there's a mango, and a peach,
- 2:44Speaker 4: and I think I've had the strawberry too.
- 2:45Speaker 5: When I went down to h Mart, Well, I would
- 2:48Speaker 5: say feast. I would not say this is a flop.
- 2:50Speaker 5: I would say I, I would agree.
- 2:52Speaker 4: I didn't want to tell you whether I liked it
- 2:54Speaker 4: or not until you tried it.
- 2:56Speaker 6: It's got this kind of a coating, yeah, side of
- 2:58Speaker 6: the ice cream.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Traditionally, our ice creams in America have that hard shell,
- 3:03Speaker 4: so we usually have you know, fudge or whatnot that's
- 3:06Speaker 4: kind of hardened on the outside and makes it kind
- 3:08Speaker 4: of crunchy. And the first time I bought into that, say,
- 3:11Speaker 4: was that same experience. Oh no, this this is silky
- 3:15Speaker 4: and it's like a white chocolate exterior, and so it
- 3:19Speaker 4: almost adds to the creaminess.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Oh that's wonderful. And how much there's one of these costs?
- 3:23Speaker 4: So down at the Chinatown Market. It's three ninety nine
- 3:27Speaker 4: so for one of them. But I mean, like you said,
- 3:30Speaker 4: it's art and I think it's very delicious as.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Well, very good.
- 3:35Speaker 4: My kids love them, so anytime we are even near
- 3:39Speaker 4: any of those stores, they really want to get those
- 3:41Speaker 4: ice creams.
- 3:41Speaker 1: They're very good.
- 3:43Speaker 4: But those were one of the surprising feasts. You know,
- 3:47Speaker 4: we have a lot of viral stuff going on. If
- 3:49Speaker 4: you open up Instagram or TikTok, there's always going to
- 3:51Speaker 4: be something viral.
- 3:52Speaker 5: A lot of times it's recipes.
- 3:54Speaker 4: You know, I've seen cottage cheese that you can make
- 3:56Speaker 4: into ice cream, or you know, you can bake a
- 3:58Speaker 4: cake out of two ingredients, and so these things are
- 4:02Speaker 4: sometimes a flop and sometimes they're a feast. And this
- 4:06Speaker 4: one really happened to be a feast or flop or
- 4:09Speaker 4: a feast of the flop.
- 4:11Speaker 6: Yeah, these are great. My wife just sent me one
- 4:14Speaker 6: of these. Oh yeah, a hack you know, from from
- 4:17Speaker 6: the internet. Okay, the uh salted maple, doctor pepper, salted maple.
- 4:24Speaker 5: That sounds horrible.
- 4:25Speaker 1: I don't know, Well, you don't like maple. It's easy.
- 4:28Speaker 6: The topping is made with five tablespoons of heavy cream
- 4:32Speaker 6: one and a half tablespoons of maple syrup and a
- 4:34Speaker 6: little sprinkling of salt sea salt. You mix that froth
- 4:38Speaker 6: together until it's you know, frothy and foaming. Okay, fill
- 4:42Speaker 6: a glass with Doctor Pepper eight to ten ounces, and
- 4:46Speaker 6: then put doll up the whipped cream on top. Okay, mix,
- 4:50Speaker 6: you know, finish it off with some nutmeg, and you've
- 4:52Speaker 6: got you've salted cream.
- 4:55Speaker 5: I'm gonna go home and try that.
- 4:57Speaker 1: It's supposed to be like you've got a mess.
- 4:58Speaker 4: I don't know, but that's a lot better than there
- 5:01Speaker 4: was a trend for pickles in Doctor Pepper, and I
- 5:05Speaker 4: refused pickles and soda. No, I'm sorry, And I understand
- 5:09Speaker 4: the whole like salty, sweet and all the other flavors
- 5:13Speaker 4: kind of like mixed in between.
- 5:15Speaker 5: But no, I'm not. That doesn't sound right, No, yeah,
- 5:17Speaker 5: it doesn't.
- 5:18Speaker 3: I was listening to I don't know her name, she
- 5:21Speaker 3: wrote that cook book about salt, fat whatever. Yeah, and
- 5:26Speaker 3: she's got a new book out, but she's talking about
- 5:29Speaker 3: bean broth. You know, your homemade beans in there, they'll
- 5:32Speaker 3: they make a lot of broth while you cook the beans.
- 5:35Speaker 3: And she says you can use that for all kinds
- 5:37Speaker 3: of things. You can even use it to make meringue.
- 5:40Speaker 3: You just whip, you whip it and it's it'll whip up.
- 5:42Speaker 3: The broth will whip up like meringue.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Have an egg was watching well, I mean the yeah,
- 5:50Speaker 4: the price of eggs.
- 5:50Speaker 5: I mean, I don't figure about that.
- 5:52Speaker 3: She said, it's just it's just you know, you sweeten
- 5:54Speaker 3: it up and it has the consistency of meringue.
- 5:57Speaker 4: But I mean, there are desserts from the Philippines that
- 5:59Speaker 4: I had that have beans in it. They have quite
- 6:02Speaker 4: a few bean inspired Well.
- 6:03Speaker 3: You get ice cream with the red beans in Hawaii,
- 6:07Speaker 3: I know, yep, which I always quite liked.
- 6:09Speaker 5: No, for sure.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Now you listed some flops, and I'm kind of surprised
- 6:12Speaker 2: you think these are all flops.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Well, and I think it all depends to where you
- 6:17Speaker 4: get it or how you prepare it. So like what, Well,
- 6:21Speaker 4: I had one of those square croissants. So croissants last
- 6:25Speaker 4: year were the big hit, you know, and everybody was
- 6:28Speaker 4: doing croissants. In one shop did a big square one,
- 6:31Speaker 4: and so it just went across the nation. I tried
- 6:34Speaker 4: it in Vegas and it was the biggest flop because
- 6:36Speaker 4: it just was crusty on the outside and then bready
- 6:39Speaker 4: on the inside, and it's like, you don't want a croissant.
- 6:41Speaker 5: That tastes like bread on flaky yeah, flaky.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:45Speaker 5: Another one was Crookie.
- 6:47Speaker 4: I did bring in cookies, and I feel like we
- 6:49Speaker 4: all just thought they were okay, Like it was. It
- 6:51Speaker 4: took away again that flakiness of the croissant, and so
- 6:54Speaker 4: the crookie was, in my opinion, a flop. And then
- 6:58Speaker 4: the kruffin it got a little dry. We talked about that. Yeah,
- 7:02Speaker 4: shell was a little too hard, and so you you
- 7:04Speaker 4: didn't have a great experience. But if you go on
- 7:08Speaker 4: my Instagram, I do these on my stories every once
- 7:10Speaker 4: in a while. I have one that I posted last
- 7:12Speaker 4: night and I do smash your pass, which is just
- 7:16Speaker 4: would you buy it or not? And last night I
- 7:19Speaker 4: did sodas and drinks. And there are a few new
- 7:22Speaker 4: ones like diet coke. Lime is now reintroduced, so it's
- 7:25Speaker 4: come back a lot of while. Yeah, And if you
- 7:28Speaker 4: go on there, you can vote for these. And then
- 7:30Speaker 4: there's shelf Stable chocolate milk that's made from with candy bars, so.
- 7:34Speaker 5: There's like a twig, there's a sneakers.
- 7:36Speaker 4: I am not a shelf stable milk type of person.
- 7:39Speaker 4: I lived in Ukraine for a few years and that's
- 7:41Speaker 4: all I drank, and I just anytime it ruined, you ruined. Yes,
- 7:47Speaker 4: but there's a few other things that are kind of
- 7:48Speaker 4: fun too. The Cheetos released a Spicy Deal.
- 7:53Speaker 5: Cheeto for that.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I can agree with that, because anything you know,
- 7:59Speaker 4: deal is is probably pretty good. But some of those
- 8:02Speaker 4: flavor combos just just get me.
- 8:04Speaker 3: If you really want a great experience, though, go to
- 8:07Speaker 3: that Chinatown supermarket thirty three ninety South State.
- 8:12Speaker 1: There's stuff in there.
- 8:14Speaker 5: I mean, it's just it's amazing.
- 8:15Speaker 1: It's huge, and there is you just look at you go,
- 8:19Speaker 1: where does all this stuff come from? Yeah, this is
- 8:21Speaker 1: just amazing.
- 8:22Speaker 5: No, And it's one of the best things I've done
- 8:24Speaker 5: with my kids.
- 8:25Speaker 4: We go down there and we just walk the halls
- 8:27Speaker 4: and like, I just let them choose whatever, because I
- 8:30Speaker 4: love that they are wanting to try other things, and
- 8:33Speaker 4: they do so many good flavors. The ice creams and
- 8:37Speaker 4: these fruits they do so well. So we always get those,
- 8:41Speaker 4: and then we always try different candies and whatnot.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I mean, just to bring it.
- 8:45Speaker 3: I'm guessing that these nutritionally are maybe better than regular
- 8:49Speaker 3: ice cream too.
- 8:51Speaker 5: I'm not going to make that claim.
- 8:52Speaker 1: But you don't know. No, I think there's less. No,
- 8:55Speaker 1: I think it's I bet there's less butterfat in them.
- 8:58Speaker 5: There's probably let me.
- 9:00Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 9:01Speaker 5: I'm not sure they're chemically.
- 9:06Speaker 1: They're good. Yeah, that's all I need to know.
- 9:10Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly. It's not a health food, it's a it's
- 9:12Speaker 5: a fun food.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Well, it's all the nutritional information is all in Chinese.
- 9:17Speaker 1: I'm not expected.
- 9:19Speaker 5: You got to get the translate app and just put
- 9:21Speaker 5: it up there.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Only one hundred and eighty calories in one pop?
- 9:24Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I I well, yours is extra special.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:29Speaker 5: They put a little sprinkle, a little extra more on
- 9:31Speaker 5: your folks. This is we got the donut critics here.
- 9:33Speaker 2: We don't ever talk about calories on things.
- 9:36Speaker 5: These are treats, that's true.
- 9:37Speaker 4: And and if we ever talk about calories, it's about
- 9:39Speaker 4: how we're going to run it off a little bit
- 9:41Speaker 4: later too.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Yeah, well, thank you. These are really good.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:45Speaker 5: Thanks, and we'll do a feast or flop again.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Terrific.
- 9:49Speaker 5: Thank you, Ben. All right,
