- Simeon Schlicher: All right. That was week one. You get me framed weirdly, lit weirdly, Makaiah, Robert, on vacation. Dude, who even knows what we're gonna get, who we're gonna get here. This is the mostly college football recap brought to you by you guys, the fans. I am your host today, Simeon Schlicker, aka aka aka fancy trash can, aka your mom's favorite friend. I don't know. I don't know where I'm going with that. Listen. I had Micaiah Robert on vacation. So I'm covering for them the best I can. Listen, we know you like Micaiah. He's better than I am. but we're gonna get into it. I actually had the chance Miss Tuesday, had the chance to watch some games yesterday. Luckily, my wife was at a bachelorette, so that gave me time to ch hang out with my kid, my son, and watch some football. And we got your recap at least three games for you. The the theme of this week was Bloodbath for one reason or another. listen it kinda started Friday. Louisville beat Villanova fifty thy fifty nine thirteen. I'm not I'm not gonna go over Thursday. Miami beat Fam U 77 to seven. Okay. I'll come back to that why that's a fun fact later on. Missouri getting chippy with Kansas is hilarious to me, just for a fun fact. I'm not gonna I don't don't have the coach's name off the off the top of my head, but he basically said that he didn't like the racial undertone of calling it the border war, hearkening back to the Civil War. I just find that funny. They beat Missouri beat Kansas thirty eight twenty one Friday evening. I had that game on for a little bit in the background, found that interesting. Greg Shiano is gonna get fired week by week six. He's gonna win win our Jimbo Fisher award for co for coach to get fired by week six. They lost again 28-21 to but the Boston College Eagles on Friday. Again. I'm just setting up this theme. Bloodbath. We'll see more later a little bit. but we're gonna jump over to Saturday where the big things happened. I got three games for you on the breakdown. I was able to watch two of three. Makai gave me the rundown on the other one. We're looking at the Oklahoma Sooners at the Michigan Wolverines. to me, it was a tail of two halves. Michigan looked dominant in the first half. Underwood went nine for nine for seventeen with a hundred and eleven yards. he had an additional eighteen carries for eighty-seven yards and a touchdown, which was huge. both touchdowns came on the ground, Jordan Marshall breaking the seal, getting the other one. I texted I texted the group chat and again that'll be a common theme on today's episode. I texted the group chat. I'm scrolling back to find it because it's it's good enough. I won't believe and trust that Michigan is good until week twelve when they inevitably probably lose to Ohio State. Micaiah said I was out of line, but I'm right, which is fair because I was jinxing them. I was gonna say they were beating Oklahoma and they tried to lose in the second half. Defense, again, kept them in the game. When Michigan played their game, when they ran the ball, even for two yards, two and a half, one and a half, two yards, established the run game. When they established the run game, both north and south, east and west, when they were able to Consistently move the ball and not make mistakes. I think they had like nine penalties for like a hundred and some yards last week against Western Michigan. this year, this week they cleaned it up. They still made bonehead mistakes. So did Oklahoma. but they were able to get 10 points in the first half, turn around, have their defense cover them, and then go down and score a touchdown there at the end, handoff close yardage situation to Jordan Marshall. was a success. and this camera angle is bugging me now at this point. I'm gonna just gonna go ahead and yeah, there's my actual head. Now I'm just a floating head, but that's better than what it was. Johnny Matteir. I call him Johnny Matteir. I have fun. John Matteir said the sideline reporter said at the beginning that when he broke his thumb, he felt like he was throwing pancakes. Dude probably would have done better on the offensive line. to be honest with you. He he went seventeen for thirty three, consistent through a pick. Oklahoma's again, it's it's they're they were the same team. These were two teams playing each other. It was a mediocre offense, met a fantastic defense both ways of the ball. It was a fun game to watch. Don't get me wrong. It was actually it wasn't nail biting. Michigan won with more than one second that they had to put back on in order to get this done. so I'm happy for that, you know. I think the thing with Oklahoma is we're gonna see them they did this last year, they did this year before, where they like kind of fumbled through or stumbled really probably better through the first five games and then found their rhythm. They got that big win. It was last year or the year before against Alabama, and then they were just finally able to play their game. defense really started choking down. but John Matir's gotta look better. They gotta throw the ball. I mean, he has the receivers. They have the talent. They were just not there. jumping over to Oklahoma State, Oregon. Again, bloodbath. Technically, the Michigan, Oklahoma game was an upset. As a Michigan fan, screw them. the Michigan one-on-one, according to this podcast, no matter what to say. This was an upset. This was the game I didn't watch. Makaiah said, you didn't have to. Here was the storyline. So this is the storyline by Captain Boring. defense was touted as this fantastic unit who knew what they were doing. Fanta didn't, didn't. Drew Mestermaker th had 43 attempts, 23 of them completed, QBR of 80, 317 yards, two tutties, two interceptions. I'm just looking at this. He had another A hundred yards on the ground. They ran for 237 yards, threw for 300 and n 17. If you're a top defense, you can't be doing that. You just can't. Makaiah said Dante Moore looked good. Drew Mestermaker looked like Drew Mestermaker looked like a first round one-one overall pick. Your mom's favorite player, sort of situation. I would expect to see the Oklahoma. I would expect to see Oregon drop to probably in the teens. When the A P drops later today and the Cowboys come in twenty five, twenty four, whatever that may look like. In the chat, what was happening was we were saying, listen, it maka Makai said this. Makai said this twice. And I get I'm just reporting. You have defensive and offensive coordinator leave. What do you expect to happen? This is what you expect. You expect to be extremely shaky. And most importantly, you it's a good team. Even with Mike Gundy, it was gonna be a hard played team, but now you got a new coach, they have something to fight for. Here we are. What do you expect? This is what you're gonna get when you book when you book non-cupcake teams in your first three games. and that's that's all you're gonna what's gonna happen. You might lose them. And if you're not ready to take if you have your new defensive, new offensive coordinator, and they're not ready to step into what they need to do, this is what they're gonna get. You're gonna get run over by the Oklahoma State mean green. You're gonna get thrown all over for f what is that? Like five hundred and fifty yard five hundred and fifty total yards? When you're only doing a hundred and eighty yourself. The number the math ain't math in there. who are they playing next week? Oreg plays My computer is not fast enough. Portland State. And then they get USC. So hopefully they'll bounce back. That's on the Big Ten network. Oklahoma State. I'm even gonna go back and tell you who Oklahoma or Michigan playing. No one actually cares enough besides the fan Murray State. SU plays Murray State and then West Virginia, they open up against West Virginia. the night game was Ohio State, Texas. Again. Tale of two halves. I blame Arthur Smith for this game. The joke on the internet is that Arthur Smith, you have Kyle Pitts, you have Drake London, you have Bijan Robinson. Let me not use them. Let me throw decoy plays out there. let me look at the box score. Jeremiah Smith, eight receptions, 164 yards, averaging twenty yards a play, a catch. Bo Jackson also four yards, thirty seven four for thirty seven. Ten in the first quarter, ten points in the first quarter, ten points in the second quarter, nothing nothing in this latter half. What are we doing? Ohio State. Ryan Day. I don't know what this makes you. I should have looked this up before I hit record. This makes you one for what? Against ranked teams? Two for what against ranked teams? Not a good number. Again, a massive choke job. Arthur Smith. Throw the number one overall, pick the ball. You have you had Julian saying in the first half. I'm like, Ohio State looks so Good. They look like the national championship. They looked like they might even be able to beat insert basement dweller NFL team here. That's how competitive and good they looked. They had NFL talent. Bo Jackson looked amazing. Offensive line was pushing Texas's defensive line around. And then you come out in the second half and change everything. Why? It was working for you. Run the ball, throw it to Jeremiah Smith, win the game in Texas. This isn't that difficult. Arch Manning bounces back. You let you let a stone cold killer kill ya. Actually, you pick the you pick the gun up off the ground, loaded it, handed it to him, and put it against your head, and let him kill you. 23 for 37. QBR of 83. The only reason he did that was the last two drives. Dude looked like an assassin out there. Scored twenty one of their twenty four points in the fourth quarter. Yeah, your defense is gonna get tired against a Steve Sarke a Steve Sarkeesian offense. No duh. You you can have the best de you which they don't. They lost a lot. They had to recover quite a bit, but you could have the best defense in the world and they're gonna get tired. And Arch got hot and was clearly had good self talk to him because it was like, this isn't gonna, this isn't gonna go well. Like you saw that last year with Arch Manning. He got in his he clearly got in his head towards the end of the year or beginning of the year. And was in his head. And then this time he just said, No, my last name's Manning. I am a surgeon. Yeet. He was throwing balls that everybody wishes they could throw. Yes, they had some drop passes on for Texas. I think Ohio State had a bunch of drop passes too. Julian Sain looked extremely serviceable. Thirty two seventeen for thirty-two, two hundred and seventy-eight yards. Again, total offense. I'm doing quick math. Two three sixty ish. All in the first half. Could not play the second half of football. No one knows why. Choke chop, Ryan Day. Dude, you've got to figure this out. You guys looked good. You should have won this game. For the rest, like the rest of it. Like the rest of the league is what I'm getting now. Horrible. Listen, there were other games. That's another ranked on ranked violence, as Makai likes to say, as we like to say. no really big upsets. Those were the big one those were the technically the three big ones, right? And Ohio State it was one v four. So is that really even an upset? The reason I say that this was a bloodbath of a week. Great example of this. Purdue took Wake Forest to overtime. What are we doing? What what is happening in in the NCAA that we're take that Purdue's taking Wake Forest? Two bot basement dweller teams are taking each other to overtime. Great game. Wish I would have watched it. Honestly wish I would have watched it. Here's the real fun fact. Makai sent it to me this morning. I sent it to him yesterday. Nine teams scored over 60 points. Of those, six of them scored seventy or more. Miami beat Famue 77 to 7 on Thursday. Malachi Tony is is him. He only had 96 yards. Just just insane. Notre Dame beat Rice 52 0. This was the type of day we were having. This is the big one. James Madison beat Wagner 87 3. 90 total points scored in a college football game. I I don't know if they had their first or thirds in. Wagner is not a horrible FCS team by any stretch of the imagination, but they were throwing on it. I I saw Western Michigan put up like 30 points against whoever whatever FCS team they were playing. North Texas beat UNLV 44-6. Florida beat Campbell 52-3. I'm just throwing this out there. look at that. Ohio and Jane and Jacksonville State went to four overtimes. After a boring week one, week two really showed y Colorado State beat if you include Colorado State fifty-eight points or more, Colorado State and I forget who the other team was, fifty-eight, fifty-nine respectfully. That's eleven of the games yesterday had a team scoring fifty-eight points or more. Montana State beat Nevada and Illinois State beat Northern Illinois. That's the other half of this. Those are two FCS schools upsetting FBS schools, yes, not fantastic FBS schools, nonetheless. But we're gonna see this shift in college football, where it's gonna take five to ten years before we start to see things even out again because of all the transfers. And it's gonna take that extra year of eligibility to wear off, before we see anything. It's Massachusetts put up 37 points. Period. In a game. Massachusetts, UMass. I don't know who I I don't know what all of the players must have eaten their Wheaties this week. listen, you'll get more on Tuesday. This is all you're gonna get from me. We like to put these things out. Big games. Big games last week. Expect more again more of the same this week. this has been the mostly college football rundown. See you on Tuesday.
