- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's up everybody?
- 0:10Speaker 2: Andrew Decheco here with another edition of the check O DEII. Today,
- 0:14we're going to look at three offensive players that I
- 0:17view to be under the microscope and the reasoning for that.
- 0:21So we will start with running back AJ Dillon, whom
- 0:25the Eagles signed in free agency to a one year
- 0:28prove it deal to really provide some depth behind Saquon Barkley,
- 0:32but also add a physically imposing element that.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Power runner in the power Runner mold.
- 0:38Speaker 2: And he's somebody that out of his four seasons that
- 0:41he's been healthy, he's eclipsed over six hundred yards.
- 0:45Speaker 1: One year he eclipsed eight hundred yards.
- 0:49Speaker 2: So he gives you a competent level of production there,
- 0:53and he has a really good feel for how to
- 0:56get north and south, how to grind out tough yards,
- 1:00potentially be the closer in games where the Eagles really
- 1:05need to kind of grind out clock and they want
- 1:07to preserve Saquon Barkley. That's probably not the role that
- 1:10you want Will Shipley for.
- 1:11Speaker 1: He's not ideally suited for that though.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I do view Will as the clear cut number two
- 1:17running back. But the reason why AJ dillons under the
- 1:20microscope is he was signed to a one year proven deal.
- 1:24There wasn't, at least from my vantage point, a huge
- 1:27market for him. And one, he's a one dimensional player.
- 1:32He doesn't really offer you much in terms of juice
- 1:35or even pass catching ability. He's more of a punishing
- 1:39type of runner who can close out games, good ball security.
- 1:43He can catch the ball a little bit. But the
- 1:45primary reason why he's on my under the microscope list
- 1:50is because he missed the whole twenty twenty four season
- 1:54with the neck injury, and you don't know if there's
- 1:57gonna be any rust. You have no way of knowing
- 1:59how he going to be able to handle contact until
- 2:02we get to training camp, right, So that is a
- 2:05big question that I have because his spot on the roster,
- 2:09at least going into training camp is sort of fluid.
- 2:13They have a number of other players like Montreal Johnson
- 2:15Junior from Florida potentially vying for that third spot as well.
- 2:20And I mean, obviously I think aj Dillon right now
- 2:23has the inside track, but doesn't have a strong foothold.
- 2:27He's going to have to prove it he can stay
- 2:29healthy and that he is healthy to sort of secure
- 2:33his standing in the pecking order. But to be clear,
- 2:36and I've maintained this really since mark, since they signed
- 2:38AJ Dillon, I believe that Will Shipley is comfortably the
- 2:42number two running back on this football team. But for
- 2:45those reasons, AJ Dillon is the first player that I
- 2:49view to be under the microscope.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Now, let's look at the offensive line.
- 2:54Speaker 2: The Eagles traded for veteran offensive lineman Kenyon Green.
- 2:59Speaker 1: He was part of the CJ. Gardner Johnson trade.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Obviously, Kenyon Green is more of a household name when
- 3:05you look at the fact that he was drafted fifteenth
- 3:08overall a few years ago, started a twenty seven game
- 3:13or appeared in twenty seven games, started twenty three, missed
- 3:18his second season, I believe. So obviously there's a lot
- 3:22of he's just twenty four years old.
- 3:23Speaker 1: There's a lot of intriguing.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Elements surrounding this edition, especially when you look at the
- 3:30Eagles right guard situation and how it may be a
- 3:33little bit unsettled with Tyler Stein there, and I look
- 3:36at it more so that this is Tyler Stein's job
- 3:39to lose. But when you add someone like Kenyon Green
- 3:42into the mix, he's kind of in the mold of
- 3:45a player kind of like Mackai Beckton, where he's a
- 3:48reclamation project, and I think that I summer with Jeff
- 3:52Stoutlin could prove to.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Serve him well.
- 3:54Speaker 2: The Eagles did show some type of interest in Kenyon
- 3:59Greenley into the draft, and so we'll have to wait
- 4:04and see what version they're going to get, because Kenyon
- 4:08green did not have a very promising tenure with the
- 4:13Houston Texans, one of the worst guards in the sport.
- 4:16If you're looking at it from a metrics standpoint, I
- 4:19don't necessarily take all of that into consideration. I look
- 4:22and see what the player can do on the field,
- 4:24and when you work with Jeff Stoutlin, players seem to
- 4:27hit another gear.
- 4:28Speaker 1: So we'll have to wait and see.
- 4:30Speaker 2: If he's not able to kind of evolve under his tutelage,
- 4:35that's going to be problematic.
- 4:36Speaker 1: But right now, the way.
- 4:37Speaker 2: That I see it is obviously there's a spotlight on him,
- 4:40and some may be under the impression that he's going
- 4:42to be vying for the starting job. Obviously, when you
- 4:46bring in a player with that kind of pedigree, that
- 4:48would make some sense.
- 4:50Speaker 1: But all we have to go.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Off of is OTAs and the final day of mandatory
- 4:54mini camp, he was repping with a third team. Now
- 4:57it is important to note that he can rep it
- 4:59left and right. So I think best case scenario for
- 5:02Kenyon Green is he fulfills the Tyler Steen role of
- 5:06last season, where you're active on game day and you're
- 5:09that immediate reserve at guard.
- 5:12Speaker 1: So that's that's a pivotal role.
- 5:14Speaker 2: But until he goes out there and earns that role,
- 5:18that's going to be something that we're going to have
- 5:19to keep an eye on. He's a polarizing prospect and
- 5:22for those reasons, Kenyon Green is a player that's under
- 5:28the microscope for me. The final one that I'm going
- 5:31to talk about today is wide receiver Johnny Wilson. So
- 5:34Johnny Wilson was entrenched as the number four wide receiver
- 5:38last season for the Eagles. And you like the size
- 5:41about six foot seven. His blocking prowess is is you know,
- 5:47it's say he's a plus blocker. He does the dirty work,
- 5:49the grimy work that a lot of players are unwilling
- 5:52to do. And he's young. So they drafted him last
- 5:56season in the sixth round. He appeared in sixteen games,
- 6:00played three hundred and sixty nine snaps and thirty or
- 6:04twenty four percent on special teams, So that helps his
- 6:08case because, let's face it, the reserve receiver roles here
- 6:11in Philadelphia are are fluid aside from aj Brown, DeVante
- 6:17Smith and Johan Dodds, and there's some questions there as
- 6:20to who's going to step up and really emerge as
- 6:24those at that fourth and fifth and maybe even six
- 6:27wide receiver spot. Now, I will say that Johnny Wilson
- 6:30has the upper hand as we look at it right now,
- 6:33because he does offer special teams value. But what I
- 6:36would like to see from Johnny, and this is why
- 6:39I don't think that he is a slam dunk to
- 6:42make the roster. He's under the microscope because for all
- 6:45the things that he did offensively in terms of blocking
- 6:48and freeing up teammates and doing the dirty work and
- 6:51the things that don't necessarily show up on the box score,
- 6:54you want to see someone who is that gifted in
- 6:57terms of a hulking frame and the wingspan, and he
- 7:02obviously played football at the highest level at Florida State.
- 7:05You want to see him sort of tap into his
- 7:07receiving prowess a little bit because is there an injury
- 7:10away from him having to play meaningful snaps at wide
- 7:13receiver if he is the four, and you haven't seen
- 7:16his ability to separate with regularity, nor have you seen
- 7:20his ability to catch the football reliably. So you want
- 7:23to see him make some strides as a pass catcher
- 7:26to compliment what he's able to bring in terms of
- 7:30the blocking element and of course the special teams prowess
- 7:33that he has. But right now, I would say that
- 7:37he feels like a decent bet out of all the
- 7:40other players vying for that role to have the best
- 7:43shot at making it. But he has to go out
- 7:46there and earn it, and he has to really continue
- 7:48to grow and develop.
- 7:50Speaker 1: And offer them something else.
- 7:53Speaker 2: And what I mean by that is, really you have
- 7:56to showcase your value as a pass catcher as well,
- 7:59because you he's too from the player that I saw
- 8:03in college. He's too talented to kind of be a
- 8:06one dimensional component here. When you have players like Danny Gray,
- 8:09who was the third round pick of the forty nine ers,
- 8:11you have an Ayah Smith who really is a predominantly
- 8:15slot player, but he can also help you as a
- 8:17punt returner. Well, I think that those are players Tis
- 8:20Marshall as well. Terris Marshall might be his primary challenger
- 8:25from a body type standpoint. Now he's not six foot seven,
- 8:27but he can block and do some of those gritty
- 8:30type of things. He's also a lot more established than
- 8:33Johnny Wilson. And it was a second round pick a
- 8:35number of years ago of the Panthers. So that's a
- 8:38player that I thought caught my eye.
- 8:39Speaker 1: A little bit.
- 8:40Speaker 2: No TIA's and I believe that Marshall will be pushing
- 8:43Johnny Wilson.
- 8:44Speaker 1: But we'll have to wait and see, because.
- 8:46Speaker 2: You never want to get too far ahead basing things
- 8:50off of spring practices.
- 8:52Speaker 1: What matters is what you see this summer.
- 8:54Speaker 2: And jaywhen Hurts has been an advocate of Johnny Wilson,
- 8:58he's mentioned him a multiple occasions. Johnny has gotten Repps
- 9:02with them the previous offseason. I don't know about this one,
- 9:05but there's something to be said for that. So there
- 9:08you have it. There's my three players offensively that are
- 9:11under the microscope for the Foot of Eagles. I'm Andrew
- 9:13Dichecko signing off today for to check o DELI talk
- 9:16to everybody tomorrow with my defensive selections.
