- 0:44Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast, Ron, Siegel it
- 0:50is late on a Saturday night. My friend.
- 0:51How are you sir? I'm good, buddy, watching,
- 0:55Michigan. Close this one out against the
- 0:57dub. Yeah, that a little bit of good
- 0:59day for college football. Been a few few upsets a few
- 1:02close calls. It has Ohio State goes down to
- 1:07Oregon without cave on Thibodeau.
- 1:09That was a little bit shocking. The old BC quarterback, Anthony
- 1:14Brown leads them to Victory. Brian is Texas back.
- 1:21No sir. No, they are not an isolated.
- 1:28In Fayetteville that Arkansas, we get that one wrong.
- 1:33Yeah, well you're wrong. That's okay.
- 1:37It's okay. Arkansas is defense.
- 1:39Show the hell up? They did you know who else
- 1:42showed the hell up and almost pulled out a massive upset, kind
- 1:46of driver. Oh yeah, Colorado abstain as
- 1:50well. AB state was on the door.
- 1:53I took the nine. You know, the hurricanes and
- 2:02their wonderful home stadium with 26,000 people not much of a
- 2:09place to play. So it was a really good day for
- 2:14college football and even better when the Hokies BL w.
- 2:23We stay. We have we gotta get to W.
- 2:28Naught may be the prettiest. We we are not enthusiastic about
- 2:32this W but we will take it. We will take it.
- 2:36I was a hot garbage time touchdown from nailing the
- 2:39spread on the money at 28 and then you know we decide to put
- 2:44every young player in and they almost held but they did.
- 2:48I was in close. I almost I pretty much nailed.
- 2:51And what Tennessee state was going to do.
- 2:55I was a undersold Us by a field goal.
- 2:57So I was pretty damn close. If it was if it was Price, is
- 3:01Right? I hit that shit on the money.
- 3:02You did, you did hit the prizes to Bronson.
- 3:05Let's first before we do anything else, let's toast the
- 3:08W. Yes, sir.
- 3:11Hey guys, you know, I'm repping fighting Hoagies here with this
- 3:14is actually Sierra Nevada. So you're writing fighting
- 3:18hokey, pull stand up a little bit, show the Sheraton.
- 3:22You get to find Hoagies long if shirt.
- 3:25I got the number Clear, Mountain, Air John laser shirt.
- 3:29We are truly 2021 spokespeople for the Hokies out there.
- 3:34So, but again, we got the W. I think, if I think if this run,
- 3:41if I tell you the game in the 3514 but it was 21, nothing in
- 3:45the first half. I think everyone is doing this
- 3:47game different but it didn't happen that way.
- 3:50No, not the flow of the game is the problem and kind of the
- 3:54overall We're all feeling of way.
- 3:57The first half kind of went down was the problem, not necessarily
- 4:02what the end result is. I think we're pretty much fine
- 4:06with with the end result cover. The spread Captain, it orange
- 4:11length, especially the entire second half.
- 4:13But that first half just, it didn't sit.
- 4:16Well it didn't feel right and it kind of got everybody in a
- 4:19little bit of a funk, right? You're right.
- 4:22You're up. So let's jump into it.
- 4:24So before A jump into it though. Shout out, Matt Neal.
- 4:27What are you drinking tonight? Stan.
- 4:30Hello and listening in. I bet.
- 4:33It's bourbon. I bet it's Tito's.
- 4:36Hey, I bet it's Tito's Tito's, and he does and some some
- 4:43Lacroix out there. All right, so Brian is
- 4:46effectively labeled the Middle, Tennessee State, the tale of two
- 4:52halves. So let's start with the first
- 4:54half and let's start the first play of the game Run.
- 4:59Keshawn King kind of in the doghouse little bit for the
- 5:02fumble. Last week comes out.
- 5:05Gets it right at the goal line. He takes it.
- 5:08He sees a crease left, he cuts and he goes.
- 5:12Yep. And you saw the leverage, he was
- 5:16going to get caught but not before he got just about to
- 5:18Midfield. I mean when that happened to me
- 5:24the first thoughts in your mind like it's like okay this is
- 5:27going to be a route. Yeah, I was like okay we're
- 5:30coming out the gate hot again, you know this this is kind of
- 5:33the energy that we brought to the start of the UNC game.
- 5:37We're going to kind of keep that going and then the offense took
- 5:40the field and it just felt different Seem like they just
- 5:45couldn't get out of their own way.
- 5:46A little bit did really, like the way the offensive line was
- 5:51playing in the first half, but those first couple drives a
- 5:54particular look, like, they just weren't quite getting the calls
- 5:56where they needed to be weren't quite where they wanted to be
- 6:00getting to the second level. Blankenship was making plays.
- 6:04Did a good job of kind of running sideline, to sideline,
- 6:07to stretch some of those lateral runs out.
- 6:10And it was just just wasn't a good start for us.
- 6:12Yeah, it was yucky it. As yucky it looked super plane.
- 6:16Unlike you and see we did not attack the edges.
- 6:19Any and in the passing game? No.
- 6:23Well, in Braun, something mean, you talked about was they were
- 6:26small undersized quick defense, would you have with the first
- 6:30play you have read would have been outside zone or if you
- 6:32around a little, something different.
- 6:34I mean, it's our bread and butter but at the same time it
- 6:38does kind of play into the string.
- 6:39So what they like to do and how they like to attack the
- 6:41offensive lines. So Have been nice to see
- 6:44something different. Something similar to kind of how
- 6:47we came out against UNC with that.
- 6:50Little swing pass to get Blackshear up open, get them
- 6:53kind of on their heels a little bit, you know, but it seemed
- 6:57like the the plan from the get-go was kind of to keep
- 7:02things vanilla on both sides of the ball.
- 7:04That's kind of how we came out on the offense, the call the
- 7:07calls, were kind of vanilla kind of straightforward and
- 7:10unfortunately, the way we executed them reflected, That.
- 7:15Yeah, the way we executed reflected the way we executed it
- 7:19also looked like again why did not want to be right?
- 7:24Is because you know, like any time we get a ranking this early
- 7:30in the season it's like I don't necessarily say goes to the guys
- 7:32heads, but it's like it. We lose the chip.
- 7:37We had a chip last Friday night we played angry.
- 7:41What's up tally? Thanks for checking in with us
- 7:43tonight. Man in tally we got a we got
- 7:47Billy on here. Billy everybody will Bill
- 7:51appreciate you guys jumping in hanging out with us.
- 7:53Exactly. For Billy though.
- 7:55Billy you're in the west coast man.
- 7:57It's the night has just begun for you sir, but it's the whole
- 8:01piece of We get it, we lose the chip and then it takes us having
- 8:07a bad have to get the chip back, you know?
- 8:10So the first two drives not good.
- 8:14It started the game off slow. But you know what?
- 8:16Brian, what we saw last week with UNC defense came to play
- 8:22again. Yep, defense came to play, had a
- 8:26couple couple plays where they had some positive.
- 8:29Then we would just we would put it back in the - there and then
- 8:32we got two quick three and out. It's to start the game for them.
- 8:36I like the energy that the defense brought out the gate,
- 8:39which the offense would have batch that.
- 8:42But overall, first two drives ended up debt.
- 8:46What for total, three announce for both sides.
- 8:48They're so kind of a slow start on both sides all offensively
- 8:53and then we kind of woke up. It was kind of a weird way that
- 8:56we woke up man because we woke up after a Braxton Burmeister
- 9:00scramble that resulted in a big shot on his shoulder that end
- 9:03up. Taking Braxton back to the
- 9:06locker room for a little bit. Yeah, unfortunately, that had a
- 9:09happening. And when that happened, Brian, I
- 9:11just in the words of Leslie board and I just sat there.
- 9:14I went. Well, shit.
- 9:16That's the season. Usually wait, you went full in
- 9:23the other ear. Like alright.
- 9:23We're done. It's over.
- 9:25Yeah. Stick a fork in this.
- 9:27I was like no. Well now we gotta we gotta wait
- 9:28on this man. Well, this is still I mean no
- 9:32disrespect to Middle Tennessee but this is still Middleton.
- 9:34Ceci, hold on there. But yeah, we'll just be thinking
- 9:37long-term whole season, not just one.
- 9:39Sure, sure. But it's also the fact that he
- 9:41got hit and he just laid there. Yeah.
- 9:44Laying there and we can we know his history with his shoulder
- 9:47and we haven't know that. One of the key things we want to
- 9:51do is try to try to limit that those big hits.
- 9:54You know, his game, he's going to take some shots but you don't
- 9:58want him taking shots like that you know, somebody that's on the
- 10:03the baseball team. Team, teach this kid to slide,
- 10:06please. Let's do that first.
- 10:09If you don't teach him to slide at least teach him to leave his
- 10:12left shoulder, not his right shoulder.
- 10:17I mean he's a full-on gamer though because you know, we had
- 10:21a couple good plays from Knox. Kadem came in there, we got one
- 10:25another about 20 yards. Yeah.
- 10:27Or so on that drive after knocks came in.
- 10:30Then you know, Braxton comes back out, throws a nice little
- 10:34Fade to a v on Robinson and the left corner of the end zone.
- 10:38Good guys are up 7-nothing. Exactly, good guys up 7-nothing,
- 10:42they ran that route a little bit shorter than they did.
- 10:46Last week against UNC and nailed it perfect, something else.
- 10:50And it might have saved for Braxton on that drive was there
- 10:53was a review for targeting dip because Braxton went out, he
- 10:59went to the tent. Then they took him back and I'm
- 11:02sure that it will just make sure he wasn't concussed.
- 11:05But I'm Ted was quick to so maybe he was back.
- 11:08He was back in the locker room. Probably shoulder pads off
- 11:11before they ever even got back from the review.
- 11:14So this is what I think. And with that, I think they went
- 11:17under the tent because test pool, you know you can get up in
- 11:20there, Brian feel, anything, feel broken know and probably
- 11:24the next thought was well you've bleeped up this shoulder before.
- 11:28Let's get these pads off us. Check your ranges of motion.
- 11:31Get him back here. Pull the shoulder pads off.
- 11:33Check the range of motion. Everything looks good.
- 11:35Feel good. Yep.
- 11:35Let's go. He's on the sidelines.
- 11:37Throwing That targeting the review that took like four and a
- 11:41half to five minutes. I think that was big because it
- 11:46got him, they got him back out, make that touchdown pass and get
- 11:50the confidence up. Yep.
- 11:53Because I mean, at that point, throwing the ball that had been
- 11:56definitely Struggle Bus for most of the entire first quarter
- 12:00there. So getting him in a with a throw
- 12:03that he's comfortable with getting that touchdown that
- 12:06definitely got a little confidence, going back in the
- 12:08offense. Oh absolutely.
- 12:09And by the way what needs to be said is some of his passes you
- 12:14know the downfield stuff isn't where it needs to be, but the
- 12:18fade routes especially short yardage compared to what they
- 12:21were last year. When we Psalm they've gotten
- 12:24significantly better more touch more accurate.
- 12:27Yeah. In that thing for both of those
- 12:29things are. So the touch gives the receiver
- 12:32a chance to be where he needs to be the accuracy.
- 12:35Obviously means that when it's thrown, it's not going to be a
- 12:38pic and it gives the receiver a chance to come down with it in
- 12:41bounds every time. So that is really big, in my
- 12:44opinion, and it's great to see. All right, so defense does its
- 12:49job again and then Tavian Robinson, absolutely wonderful
- 12:55punt. Return flips, the field and
- 13:00Brian, let me just say this between Keshawn King and Tavian
- 13:03Robinson. Any Royals in the booth today at
- 13:08Ian's? Bill here in.
- 13:09Touchdown, tech gave me chills, but I think we have two Elite
- 13:15return men. In the country, not just in the
- 13:19ACC in the country, they both have good Vision, they both have
- 13:21good speed what we saw today, numerous times.
- 13:27You know, with a couple good kick returns and good punt.
- 13:30Return was we flip the field without having to do too much
- 13:34just those guys being good. Yep.
- 13:38And that's going to be key because I think that was
- 13:40definitely something that was lacking.
- 13:42Especially on the punt side last year is that they never got
- 13:47fully comfortable back there. Had a couple muffs.
- 13:51We ended up kind of having a rotating cast of characters as
- 13:54we close out the year last year punt.
- 13:56Return That, that was more of a mitigating disaster position
- 14:03than it was about having any sort of positive impact on our
- 14:07team. And I feel like that's
- 14:09definitely turned into an asset at least in the early going of
- 14:12the year so far. Absolutely, he seemed very
- 14:14comfortable back there. He's getting the opportunities
- 14:17to run, which is really big. All right?
- 14:22So that sets up the really good drive.
- 14:24BB has that as a really good scramble.
- 14:27Which, you know, I'll have to ask you.
- 14:29Brian, you know. Yay, or nay.
- 14:35Did you like him still scrambling after taking that
- 14:37pop? Yeah, because he's got to play
- 14:39his game. I don't want to see him change
- 14:41how he's approaching the playing the quarterback position, just
- 14:46because of one big pop now, I do want to see him, not take
- 14:49unnecessary hits at the end of plays.
- 14:52Okay, so there's a difference there, right?
- 14:55Yeah, one is how you're approaching.
- 14:57Your mindset in terms of what you do with the ball, the other
- 15:00is how you finish the play and keep yourself safe.
- 15:03So you can still make those plays.
- 15:05And as its closing out, you get out of bounds when you need to
- 15:08you slide ahead of the contact. When you need to, you make a
- 15:12good slide in that lead with your head and shoulder, right?
- 15:16Okay. Truth of that you may live
- 15:18slides. Yeah.
- 15:19Don't, don't put yourself out there.
- 15:21Like you did the first time and get yourself absolutely killed.
- 15:23Yeah and I mean it wasn't a fighting for yardage getting the
- 15:26first down In. You had the first day on you
- 15:28just need to get down safely, right?
- 15:30Exactly. This isn't a John Elway sticking
- 15:32his neck out there to get the get the first down.
- 15:35It's not the Super Bowl, and you have to continue to drive to go
- 15:41take the lead or to extend the lead.
- 15:44Yep, it's early in the game. All right, so he gets a good
- 15:47scramble and we get down inside the 10 yard line and they bring
- 15:51in kind of Limerick. We get ten yards, Bloomberg up
- 15:57the middle, little little sweet to Big Stone Gap.
- 16:02Yep. He Dives forward, he just misses
- 16:04it and then we take Connor blumrich up the middle one more
- 16:08time pounds it in its 14-nothing.
- 16:12The return of the wild turkey. We had a little diamond
- 16:14formation running on that one. It was it was a pretty sweet
- 16:17thing to see. Well simply shows that the the
- 16:21gears are turning a little bit there, in terms of at least
- 16:23getting Connor active in the The offense because I feel like that
- 16:25was something that we didn't really see a whole lot last
- 16:27week, that's an element. That's a wrinkle that we showed
- 16:30this week. We didn't show a lot of wrinkles
- 16:32on offense. This week getting Connor,
- 16:35blumrich involved in the offense, was one of the few
- 16:37wrinkles that we did present this week from.
- 16:40And we'll talk, we'll talk more about that in the second half
- 16:42and I kind of like what we did in the second half even more
- 16:46than what we did in the first so that his teacher asked exactly.
- 16:51But let's, let's, let's just let me Dress for a second if you
- 16:55don't mind. Yeah, go for you had a similar
- 17:00guy, the last who years on this team, that you did not do these
- 17:08things with coaching staff and now he's out at North Dakota
- 17:13State so if anything I get more irritated because me and you
- 17:19call we were calling for like get Quincy, some packages like
- 17:23this. This.
- 17:25Yep, some packages like this because if nothing else it takes
- 17:30it makes them see something different on goal-line situation
- 17:33and you know, eventually with especially when you throw in
- 17:37those phases, like actually gets into State visually, they're
- 17:40going to sell out and there's going to be just an easy slant
- 17:43or easy fade route. So I'm done digressing about
- 17:47that because we have a similar guy that could do the same
- 17:51things and you chose not to do it.
- 17:52Shout out qp4 tearing it up today.
- 17:55Oh, did he good day? Yeah, good day.
- 17:58Good day for him. Nice.
- 18:00Alright, let's jump back. Look at the defense again.
- 18:04You know. After kind of what happens,
- 18:10really great start. We start to see some old Ryan.
- 18:13What did you specifically see that kind of, you know, when
- 18:17they gave up the touchdown on that long drive?
- 18:22I saw a lot of off coverage Corners play in about eight
- 18:28eight to ten off the receivers. They were mixing in some covers
- 18:33six and looks like Middle. Tennessee was consistently
- 18:36attacking the half-filled side of that coverage behind the
- 18:41corner in front of the safety Corner.
- 18:44Routes little kind of will sluggos things like that where
- 18:49the can get the wall then behind the corner back.
- 18:51Back and linebacker didn't have enough time to get over to make
- 18:55the coverage there. And it happened on key downs.
- 19:00And I think that was what it was more frustrating.
- 19:01Is that, you know, we have, we have good to you first down
- 19:05second down, they'd be either third and five or more.
- 19:10And then they would just keep running.
- 19:11Kind of the same route Concepts that kept kind of working in the
- 19:16same areas of the defense. And There was a moment where it
- 19:19looked like Armani. Chapman was a little frustrated
- 19:22with, with kind of those Concepts.
- 19:24Had a little, little little back and forth.
- 19:26There with J Hamm or someone on the sidelines.
- 19:30And, you know, we kind of wrote out the rest of that drive like
- 19:33that. They ended up getting a
- 19:35touchdown. It was a close play.
- 19:36We're about an inch and a half from that being kind of a yeah,
- 19:40Linda incomplete pass. It was called incomplete on the
- 19:43field. He got that right foot down,
- 19:45just as he kind of secured the ball and then, you know, the
- 19:48Left foot came down out and little bit of wind out of the
- 19:53sails there. Just because you know when when
- 19:56we got the ball back, didn't do anything with it.
- 20:00Yeah, I think that was the more frustrating thing.
- 20:02Well, that three-and-out drive was frustrating in a lot of ways
- 20:05because it was the first time we kind of purposely took shots.
- 20:13Down the field. Right?
- 20:14Purposely took shots. Yeah, and I know there was
- 20:17actually a sense of urgency. It was a one score game.
- 20:20We were getting late in the Hat, the first half.
- 20:22So they're actually feels like, okay, we're it's not just early
- 20:25going anymore. We're almost in the end of the
- 20:28first half and they're still in this thing, right?
- 20:31Exactly. And I think you mentioned
- 20:33something to me. Um, when we talked about 5:00
- 20:39today you've said, that is the first place you should have
- 20:44seen. Like, this is how we should have
- 20:45came out immediately roll MVP, get a few yards and then attack
- 20:51them because they're clearly they're clearly song sinking in.
- 20:55Here's why? Yeah, I would like to see, you
- 20:57know, shots down the field like that because I mean, there were
- 20:59a couple plays where we were running verticals across the
- 21:02board. We didn't see a whole lot of
- 21:05Those Outlet routes with Blackshear where he was kind of
- 21:09the guy underneath that if it wasn't there.
- 21:13There was someone to drop it off to.
- 21:14We saw one time where they rob was targeted, but it was clearly
- 21:19Braxton was just getting rid of the ball out of nice to seem,
- 21:22you know, some sort of Outlet route to, you know, get it into
- 21:25Blackshear. Maybe get five or six yards.
- 21:27See if he can break a tackle and get a first down.
- 21:29Yeah. And I'd like to see more levels
- 21:32to the concepts here. We're here.
- 21:35We're not necessarily running for guys deep and there's
- 21:39there's no Outlet. You know, run Too Deep.
- 21:42Run Run something whipped up the seam run one guy on the outside
- 21:46deep and then you know maybe work in a dig or or a some sort
- 21:51of like play in the flats just to get get the ball out of
- 21:56nothing's working for you. I don't like these Concepts
- 22:01where we're just running for deep and there's, there's no
- 22:03really other option than either thrown it Deeper throwing it out
- 22:05of bounds. Exactly.
- 22:07And I think the big piece on you do that sort of concept is, we
- 22:10know how risk-adverse that they're teaching the
- 22:13quarterbacks to be about not turning the ball over.
- 22:15Yep. Well, you're running these
- 22:17Concepts that essentially, that essentially, you're teaching
- 22:23them to be risk adverse and you're giving very high-risk
- 22:25Concepts versus, and we have guys that can do it, right?
- 22:31I think this is probably what frustrates us more than
- 22:33anything. versus running Blackshear or Holston, or Big
- 22:38Stone Gap, or any of those guys putting them out just in the
- 22:42flats or having them hook up 325 yards downfield, because if
- 22:48someone blows coverage and forgets about those guys and
- 22:52you're able to make that dump down, You're running guys. 20 30
- 22:56yards off. Yeah there's going to be a if
- 23:00the guy doesn't make the initial tackle there is going to be that
- 23:05right there in front of those guys.
- 23:07Yeah so did I mean like I said we're looking at Kind of what we
- 23:13did. I'm a I'm definitely looking at
- 23:15it and say, okay, well, they went full vanilla in this game
- 23:19that was that was by Design By Design.
- 23:22They weren't going to do anything.
- 23:24Yeah well I mean look at look at the UNC taping and look at this
- 23:27tape. The concepts are significantly
- 23:32less unique less inventive. There was not the only zero
- 23:38Throwbacks. I mean there was yet another
- 23:45There was none of that. So keep that in mind.
- 23:48When you're evaluating, what this offense did today by no
- 23:52means, am I happy with the outcome?
- 23:55But at the same time, I recognize that by Design, this
- 24:00was supposed to be vanilla. The only difference is Middle
- 24:02Tennessee. Did a fairly decent job of
- 24:04stopping vanilla? Exactly, by the way, folks, if
- 24:07you see me and Brian's head or eyes move, We're watching Pac-12
- 24:12after dark. We made some things on these
- 24:15games. So and that's why we just run
- 24:20this live right now, we're going to be up anyway, watching the
- 24:23late night games and, you know, showing our love for college
- 24:26football. So you'll see our eyes move
- 24:29pivot on slovis, just slid perfectly and then he did a
- 24:32Braxton slide across straight anymore.
- 24:37If Braxton did that, like perfectly slide and then the
- 24:40next one, Look like an awkward draft going down.
- 24:44All right, so burn. One more thing before we hit a
- 24:47break here under 90 seconds, left the balls at like the 4
- 24:52yard line. We finally, get aggressive.
- 24:55Tell me your frustration would happen.
- 24:59So I'm not frustrating that we did it in this game.
- 25:02I'm frustrated that we did it in this game, with 116 left inside,
- 25:08our own 10-yard line, starting the Artie, the drive when we
- 25:13didn't do that against UNC with more time and better field
- 25:16position. Can you explain that?
- 25:21That's in that that's that's that's my beef, you know, I get
- 25:25that I'll say this. We needed to show after the the
- 25:31couple drives we had before that that we could still move the
- 25:34ball consistently against that defense just to just to mental.
- 25:39So I think some of that played a role, okay?
- 25:42But at the same time just I mean if you're going to be
- 25:45conservative or aggressive, situationally I would prefer it
- 25:50to be a little more predictable and I'm not saying predictable
- 25:56from a, you know, the It says it's coming to but you know.
- 26:01If you're going to be aggressive in those situations, be
- 26:04aggressive or, no, but it's kind of, it was kind of weird that,
- 26:09you know, you get different treatment here.
- 26:10I get there's less Stakes here. So, yeah, it's 14-7.
- 26:15It's, you know, we have seen, you have the same roughly, the
- 26:20same lead, right? But you're playing a lesser what
- 26:23you consider a lesser opponents. So you feel like the stakes are
- 26:25lower right Stakes, a little you feel like if you make a mistake
- 26:29they're not going to take advantage of it especially way
- 26:31that Consider played the 85 percent of the first quarter so
- 26:36get it completely. All right guys before we do get
- 26:39into the second half, we are going to take a quick pause for
- 26:44a message from our digital Partners.
- 26:46All right, Brian. Let's start second half and
- 26:49Middle. Tennessee, State comes out and
- 26:52probably has their second best Drive of the game to open it up,
- 26:58you know, and what they showed. And I hope that JC price and
- 27:03Bill Care on it. Sorry to be the throw you off
- 27:10there so that's all two questions.
- 27:13Come up they want to write real quick.
- 27:15Yeah, so so meals asking that, you know, if our passing game is
- 27:19based on smoking mirrors and misdirection, you know, why do
- 27:22we side decide to go vanilla against anyone?
- 27:25I think I mean, you got West Virginia, your, you got a big
- 27:28game coming up. Maybe they don't want to put
- 27:30some of the stuff on tape, but my beef, but that is that, you
- 27:33already put some of it on tape against you and see.
- 27:35I'd rather you throw the kitchen sink out There and make West
- 27:39Virginia have to pick and choose how they're going to prepare
- 27:41against you. Then go full vanilla, but you
- 27:44still got some tape from you and see that they can fall back on.
- 27:49That's a good point. I'll let you continue into the
- 27:51second half, sir. Well, I'm gonna I'm gonna just
- 27:54follow up on that and makes it makes perfect sense, right?
- 27:57Like it makes perfect sense. You've already shown it.
- 27:59Why not continue to let the guys execute the plays on the field
- 28:03against live competition again. I think you said it before,
- 28:08sometimes this coaching staff outsmarts themselves and it gets
- 28:13us in trouble. I think the game today throwback
- 28:17to everybody, 2019, the game today could have been firming
- 28:20back in 2019. It could have yet, but I think
- 28:25we are have a much much better leadership group.
- 28:33Between guys like Brock lettuce, Shamari Connor Dax Jordan
- 28:39Williams. And some in Jermaine Waller, you
- 28:42have more guys who can hold everybody together, where things
- 28:46like that, things weren't going, right.
- 28:49It was just like, what do we do? What do we do?
- 28:51What do we do? And it wasn't good.
- 28:54Yeah, leadership wise, this is closer to the the 2016 and 17
- 28:59edition of the Hokies and hopefully Carries forward and
- 29:03games like this where we aren't quite fired on all cylinders.
- 29:07We've got that leadership to fall back on where we don't let
- 29:10you know, a couple of - plays whether offense or defense turn
- 29:14into two or three touchdowns that end up costing us the game.
- 29:19Exactly. All right.
- 29:21So now let's go to Middle Tennessee State out of the half,
- 29:25as I've said, a couple minutes ago, had a really good drive to
- 29:30come out of the half and kind of show something.
- 29:32I hope built to your neck and that I hope JC price are showing
- 29:37the defensive line. The big play on that drive.
- 29:40Was a little throwback screen essentially, taking a girl,
- 29:44taking advantage of their aggressiveness on the of on the
- 29:47defensive line Brian. I know it was Middle Tennessee,
- 29:50State. But I know.
- 29:51Please like that or things as an offensive.
- 29:53Lineman you love and offensive guy.
- 29:55You love ya. And I mean the concept was
- 30:00great. I saw it coming before it.
- 30:02Then I was like they gave a completely free rush to Bar
- 30:07know, something's coming, that's not by Design and then it all of
- 30:12a sudden you see the guy come out.
- 30:13The other side of the, the formation you see the the
- 30:19throwback from Hockman over there to him and ended up being
- 30:23what about 35, yard gain? I think on that play huge game,
- 30:28I mean really huge gain. And, you know, luckily, we they
- 30:32Get down to about the 30. And, you know, instead of going
- 30:36for it, regardless of down and distance, they chose to punt and
- 30:42they pinned us deep and, and I'm not saying, I mean, it's 14-7 so
- 30:47you get it. But I also, why is it not in the
- 30:51back of their mind? We scored one time on them.
- 30:56We had to go out of our normal pattern, to score a touchdown.
- 30:59Every other time, we touch the ball.
- 31:01We did a little To nothing. Why aren't we taking advantage
- 31:06of this? But you essentially think they
- 31:09might be an empty the clip mode, right?
- 31:11Exactly. I would be you would think you
- 31:13would think given the scenario you're in how close the score
- 31:16is, you empty the clip but they did and they did and they
- 31:20decided to play it conservative. They thought their defense could
- 31:24could keep them around and our offense came out a little bit
- 31:29more Mojo in the second half. Yes they did.
- 31:32Typically it started with, I know we talked we broke it down
- 31:36a little bit, they broke it down, really good.
- 31:38Actually in the the broadcast, the trade, the big ball to trade
- 31:44that kind of set up everything there looks like, Blankenship
- 31:50decided he was going to kind of free wheel a little bit.
- 31:52He wanted to jump under the route, gave a signal to the
- 31:56safety safety. Didn't quite get it.
- 31:58Thought he had inside leverage inside held here.
- 32:02If not Trey had a free release up, the seam ball was a little
- 32:06under thrown a little. If it was a perfect ball tree,
- 32:10probably walks in it wasn't but I will take an under throw over
- 32:15and over, throw anybody that saw the Tennessee first half can
- 32:20definitely understand exactly what I'm talking about.
- 32:25And it wasn't just the one wide open one, but it was several
- 32:28others that were overthrown. There were five.
- 32:32I've over throws. We're like, What was completely
- 32:36wide open, which was terrible. Two of the other three.
- 32:39If he'd, even under thrown a little bit, they have a chance
- 32:43to catch the ball, if at worse, it's a pi.
- 32:48Yeah, at least in this situation, the way I think.
- 32:51The way we talked about it felt about bronze this, okay?
- 32:56If there's tight coverage, you must overthrow.
- 32:58You must you just have to. It's the safest place.
- 33:01The guy gets there and catches it wonderful.
- 33:04In this case would be be. Looked there was no one there.
- 33:09Okay to under throw that. Yep.
- 33:11Okay, what I'll do? I want to see you hit in stride?
- 33:14Absolutely. Yes.
- 33:16Absolutely. Because you hit him in-stride.
- 33:19It makes every single defender on that side of the ball
- 33:22especially in the secondary safety.
- 33:23We've got to stay further back which What we do opens it up
- 33:27more as beautiful as that was the play that scored the
- 33:32touchdown on this drive. Brian had Jalen Holston looking
- 33:37like Khalid, oh Herbert with that cut because that cut was
- 33:41nasty, that was the best cut of Jalen holsten's career.
- 33:44That I've seen foot in the dirt and kind of weaved between two
- 33:50Defenders that were engaged in a block and then boom up the
- 33:54field. Early 90s as your shirt says.
- 33:57They're nothing but clean Mountain Air.
- 34:00Oh yeah, number clean Mountain, Air touchdown.
- 34:03And in right there it's 28 the game's over.
- 34:08Effectively, right there. The game is over.
- 34:12We put enough distance from you want me to be 17, the games, get
- 34:17it 21-7, the game's over because they're already plane surrender
- 34:20COBRA. They can't hit their deep shots
- 34:22to get touchdowns. They're getting deep shots just
- 34:25to move the ball and The defense after that initial open drive
- 34:33timed up a little bit. Brian defense started playing a
- 34:37little bit closer to the line of scrimmage at the cornerback
- 34:39position. And there was less room for
- 34:43those guys to kind of get to their spot in their routes in
- 34:47the slower, they get to their spot, the more the defense can
- 34:50react in that zone coverage. Right.
- 34:53True. But do you like it that we're
- 34:55playing that we were essentially giving them some easier?
- 34:59Rose. Do you like that?
- 35:00We're playing that cover six that soft quarters in a 21-7
- 35:04game because games it's not over quite yet.
- 35:07But you feel like we have control.
- 35:09Well, that means the reason I like it is because what happens
- 35:11next? What we sow Waller in a good
- 35:15position, laughter cuts the route, he knows he's got help
- 35:19behind him and all of a sudden, you know, gets the pick runs it
- 35:24back for about 25 yards. We're sitting pretty again,
- 35:28right? We're ready to punch it in one
- 35:30more time. We are.
- 35:31So, I think what you're trying to, what you're kind of saying
- 35:34here is two score lead, you're doing this.
- 35:37Eventually, they're going to get to a point when we're sending
- 35:40these zones, there's going to be no free run because there's
- 35:43going to be no where to go. And essentially, and I mean, I
- 35:46think we do need to do a better job of mixing up coverages and
- 35:50key Downs. Like, third, and five, third,
- 35:52and six. I mean, we can't be playing 89
- 35:54yards off the ball. You know, we're inviting first
- 36:00downs. You're in blindly saying, you've
- 36:02got to react exactly right to stop the first down, right.
- 36:07All right. Okay.
- 36:09So we meet, we need to. I think we need to mix it up
- 36:11again, but I think Even looking at the defense, the calls were
- 36:16vanilla tonight. There was a couple Zone Blitz is
- 36:20here and there, but there was nothing that was put on tape.
- 36:25That said, okay, I mean we didn't see the stunts that we
- 36:28saw against you and see we didn't see any of that stuff.
- 36:31Now, we saw big very basic in, you know, I'll go later on into
- 36:37how they ran the ball which wasn't very well.
- 36:39So your main intercepts ball. We're on the right side of the
- 36:44field after his interception. And then, you know what?
- 36:48We have next goes on. It was b.
- 36:56B's. Big scramble.
- 36:58And then like you did a good job.
- 37:00So he stepped up. He saw that, it wasn't their
- 37:03took off up, the feel made, a couple guys miss and that was a
- 37:07big run. And then, you know, Blackshear
- 37:10kind of took over the back half of that, that drive had a good
- 37:14run that said set us up in the the Red Zone, then closed it
- 37:17out. So it was it was really probably
- 37:21the in terms of fluidity kind of the most fluid drive.
- 37:24We had it was it was one of those quick quick.
- 37:28Punches there. And at that point, you kind of
- 37:30felt like, all right, this this this game has been put in hand.
- 37:36We're comfortable again. We're doing what we want to do
- 37:38on offense for shutting them down on defense a little bit you
- 37:42kind of felt good about where it was heading.
- 37:44There still would like to see the offense be a little more
- 37:48consistent with some of their plays because we kind of got got
- 37:52back into some of that later in the game.
- 37:56But overall I'm happy With, with the way the second half went off
- 38:00fensively. Well, let me ask you this Raheem
- 38:04Blackshear, you know, ten Russia's. 53-yard didn't see
- 38:09much in the past game tonight. How did you feel about his day
- 38:12in general day in general? Really good anytime.
- 38:15He's over five yards, a carry is a good good game for him.
- 38:21I like that. He had ten carries, I'd like to
- 38:23see him. Get about ten carries every
- 38:24game. I'd like to see him used a lot
- 38:27more than the One catch for five yards.
- 38:31He needs to at least get five targets a game.
- 38:33Minimum are you? Are you still?
- 38:39I guess now it is what it is. Like we're not going to see him
- 38:42come out of diamond. We're not going to see Colston
- 38:44him on the field the same time yet.
- 38:46Maybe maybe maybe that's in the cards for the next game.
- 38:51That's something they've never seen but it still feels like
- 38:55we're not last week. It felt like we took advantage
- 38:57of his whole arsenal today. Again with the vanilla game plan
- 39:02you don't and I don't like that because of this, you're going to
- 39:07play another team. If you take away the actual live
- 39:12situations where he's running the wheels or the flats, or you
- 39:15run some screens to him or doing some other things to him, all
- 39:18you have ever done, is put him in the Situation's behind
- 39:21practice, not live games and we start up with that.
- 39:26You let them do it in a live game.
- 39:28You saw him get 60 plus receiving guards against you and
- 39:35I'm with you, I would like to see him get more opportunities
- 39:39in any. A game, because any game against
- 39:42live competition, is better than any simulation in practice,
- 39:45right? Woohoo.
- 39:46So that's what I would prefer to see is, is a little bit more.
- 39:50You don't have to, you don't have to show anything you
- 39:52haven't already shown on tape, but you need to, at least keep
- 39:55that those elements in your offense, right?
- 39:57Yes. But you've already shown against
- 39:59you and see. It's already on tape against a
- 40:01quality opponent one, similar plays.
- 40:04Yeah. We run the same thing.
- 40:07But but again it's I think this is why the why we always are
- 40:13critical of the offensive staff, is because some of these designs
- 40:17are just like, you can show this 30 times.
- 40:20Yeah. And, and you can even say it
- 40:24again. Look how he was schemed open
- 40:25last week. Screaming somebody open is going
- 40:30to consistently happen because the second that they decide to
- 40:33move that linebacker to the flats, what you're doing is,
- 40:35you're opening up a slant route. Yeah.
- 40:38And you're open up the slant route, where if that Defender
- 40:40doesn't play perfectly and he puts it on the mate, on the
- 40:43money to tray or Tay and that other linebacker, you know, the
- 40:47weak side linebacker is out of place.
- 40:50It's gonna be the strong safety or the free safety style to come
- 40:52down and take him out. And if they don't take him out,
- 40:54it's are. So it's like why are you
- 40:57outsmarting yourself? Yeah, like I said and you know,
- 41:02they made a point there with when Neal brought it in there.
- 41:05A lot of what we do is misdirection a lot of what we do
- 41:07is getting our Playmakers in space so they can make guys
- 41:11miss. When you take away those
- 41:13elements, our offense is very pedestrian because we don't
- 41:17we're not a especially this year coming off of last year.
- 41:21We're not a just line up and run it down your throat offense this
- 41:25year. That's not that's not our game.
- 41:28And when you go vanilla and you don't have that, it shows real
- 41:33quick and I think that's what we saw in this game.
- 41:35True we have a more diverse offense than we did last year we
- 41:39don't have quite maybe the Home Run potential because of the way
- 41:42Khalil Herbert could run yep we have a more diverse offense to
- 41:46get the ball down. The field in numerous ways which
- 41:48we need to take full advantage of.
- 41:50We need to be better at matriculating.
- 41:52Like I like big plays as much as anybody else.
- 41:54I like the excitement of a big play.
- 41:56I don't think this offense is going to be an Exciting offense
- 41:59to watch but I think it could be a very efficient offense.
- 42:03If we do the things that we're talking about nature, all right?
- 42:07Brian, let's go last Drive Unit. A Robinson to get some big 26.
- 42:13Yard haul sets up Connor. Blumrich coming in 30-yard run.
- 42:23I think kind of Boomer might be officially part of this offense
- 42:27in packages. Now, after we see him multiple
- 42:30times today not seeing him last week and then black sheer caps
- 42:34it in with the second touchdown of the day, you know?
- 42:41It's 28-7, the game's over. It's just another good drive to
- 42:45get people feeling good. That baby's actually 35 35 7.
- 42:50At that point. Yep 30,000 that made it 35 7.
- 42:53Yep. So long I'm looking up here.
- 42:57Stanford just should request to open with USC every year.
- 43:01Ha ha ha. I mean we definitely on the
- 43:13wrong side of that one stand up for USC.
- 43:17All right, let's move on Braun Soca.
- 43:20So let's talk about Connor there because Connor got in their HVAC
- 43:24sweet. Took it to the one yard line.
- 43:26Things like that or what we talked about, we thought Connor
- 43:28might end up doing in this offense outside of, you know,
- 43:33the short Yardage heavy, backset like the wild turkey that that
- 43:37type of formation. And that's what you that what we
- 43:41want to see. I mean he is an athletic player,
- 43:43he is a little bit more of a athlete than kind of the other
- 43:47guys on the, on the line there, except me and Mitchell.
- 43:50Maybe the one exception that has that degree of athleticism.
- 43:54I don't think she quite has the top end that when we're at, can
- 43:57get to and he's designed to be a little bit more Shifty because
- 44:02he has played that quarter. Position has played HVAC for am
- 44:07before. So getting him involved is going
- 44:10to be good. I like that.
- 44:11We at least saw what he could do even though we didn't see him
- 44:15throw the ball and I like that knocks got a couple drives there
- 44:20at the end. I know we kind of we've wrapped
- 44:22up the scoring here, but but not just got out there again after
- 44:26having that, you know, half a drive.
- 44:29When Braxton went down, he got two more drives late, yashoda,
- 44:34Again that he's capable of getting the ball down the field,
- 44:37a little bit, showed a little bit of his laugh.
- 44:39Lettuce is, mm. Yeah, yeah, I'm thinking he
- 44:43doesn't have, you know, he doesn't have Braxton level
- 44:45athleticism but he can, you know, make a guy Miss and get a
- 44:49first down when he needs to. Yeah, he's one of those own
- 44:52schedule, guys. You know you think about where
- 44:55he played down in Georgia, that was the Trevor Lawrence
- 44:57Division. And he was like right on the
- 44:59heels and then they won the State title the year after
- 45:01trailer went. So obviously he Was from a
- 45:04really good football background, but I think just the the kind of
- 45:10the end of the fourth quarter. You had some younger offensive
- 45:13guys, get out there. You had younger defensive guys,
- 45:16get out there. We talked about needing to look
- 45:18at the depth that happened. I wish it would have happened.
- 45:23More myth third, not worn to the fourth but that is what it is
- 45:27because of our digressions in the first half.
- 45:30So yep. Brian you let them hang around
- 45:33for too long to Ali. Get any substituent snaps out
- 45:36there but it was nice to get something there at the end.
- 45:40Even though it was the garbage time was a lot more protracted
- 45:43than we wanted it to be. Yeah, 100% run.
- 45:49Now Brian before you know we close what that final thoughts
- 45:53here. Yesterday because it is nine 12
- 45:58mil yesterday was 9/11 in the 20th anniversary and it's it's
- 46:04probably the honest truth Brian in our lifetimes.
- 46:09It is probably the most earth-changing life-changing
- 46:14event that's happened to us. I was 18, you were seven.
- 46:18Yep. And I mean, a lot of things, you
- 46:21know, it changed a lot in real time and it changed a lot of
- 46:24how, you know, the next Decade or two how our day-to-day
- 46:29change. So there's definitely been
- 46:32serious ramifications from that moment.
- 46:35And you know, I think that's one thing that we kind of we kind of
- 46:39miss a little bit is that you know, regardless of how we're
- 46:43feeling you know, politically or socially or all that stuff.
- 46:48There was a moment in time there where we were kind of felt we
- 46:51felt United, We felt like we were on the same ground
- 46:54everybody everybody. She had come together in
- 46:57response to that and it'd be nice to get a little bit of that
- 47:01back. So but it was it was a sad day.
- 47:07It was, it was sad to feel attacked and attacked in a way
- 47:10that targeted civilians and not military assets.
- 47:16And I think that was that was the big thing for us.
- 47:19It's absolutely right. So for, you know, thinking about
- 47:22it for everyone that lost their lives that day weather in New
- 47:27York at the towers at the Pentagon, or on flight 93 that
- 47:31went down in Pennsylvania and then for all the military in the
- 47:36subsequent years, but essentially lost their lives.
- 47:41You know, a tip of the hat and a big thank you.
- 47:47Because it was the changing event of our lifetimes and it's
- 47:52been 20 years in. For some of y'all who are
- 47:57listening tonight, y'all are kids.
- 47:59We weren't we were on the present.
- 48:01We were, we were adults, we essentially, we're adults.
- 48:04I have football practice after after this happened that day and
- 48:08that was a different type of experience, you know, a lot of a
- 48:14lot of talking about things that were happening and those those
- 48:17ramifications and kind of what the what the future was going to
- 48:20show for us and how the next few weeks were GoGo and again we
- 48:24were I was in Halifax County. I was more or less removed from
- 48:31the actual events themselves and they still had that let that
- 48:34degree of impact on the day-to-day life and I can only
- 48:36imagine what the folks that live through that in real time in New
- 48:43York in in DC and on The on flight 93.
- 48:49I can only imagine what that was like for them.
- 48:51So you still sad day day of remembrance and and something
- 48:56that will never forget In Our Lifetime, not at all.
- 48:59All right. So folks, we're going to go back
- 49:01to the football now and kind of hit our closing thoughts from
- 49:03today's game, the beta version, and I'm going to hit you with
- 49:07some stats crying. And then, I want your some of
- 49:09your philosophical thoughts here.
- 49:11All right, things I like for the day, Braun, who are over 50
- 49:15percent, converting third Downs, On this team that must be
- 49:18consistent. We were right at 50% last week.
- 49:225.7 / rush if we rush 5.7 / Rush every game this year, we are
- 49:28going to win a lot of games. I don't give a damn what anybody
- 49:31says, because if we're going to run the ball, anywhere between
- 49:3330 and 40 times a game like we did today, we're going to get
- 49:36200 plus yards. All right, the things that
- 49:40didn't like or one more thing I did like zero turnovers.
- 49:45You play Queen games, were going to beat.
- 49:47In every games or against lesser opponents like this, we are
- 49:50going to essentially run away from them.
- 49:52Yeah, well then like we have to clean up the first half, we have
- 49:57to clean up and every time we get the ball we must take
- 50:00advantage there. Cannot be three and outs.
- 50:04There can be non scoring drives but there cannot be three and
- 50:07outs. We're like in Keyshawn, Kings
- 50:10case when we get a three and out we're at Midfield.
- 50:14You are roughly 25 yards from putting points on the board.
- 50:17We cannot let that happen. And then the other thing is the
- 50:20passing game, we've got to kind of look at what Braxton does
- 50:24best and take advantage of it. So sir, I'm going to turn it
- 50:28over to you. What are your thoughts on some
- 50:30of this stuff? So my first thing is this, you
- 50:35talked about yards per carry. I'm okay with with what we did
- 50:39in the running game. I think we need to be more
- 50:42consistent with how we rush the ball and get to the next level.
- 50:47So I'm going to go a little bit of criticism here on the
- 50:50offensive line. The offensive line is what I had
- 50:52the biggest problem with in the first half and it was poor pass.
- 50:59Pro-poor Blitz pickup and A poor job on combo blocks in the zone
- 51:05game of getting to the second level.
- 51:08We would more or less manage their defensive line, but then
- 51:11their linebackers would come up and make the play to yard
- 51:14three-yard gain. We can't make our entire game go
- 51:17off at two or three yard gain. So you got to be more consistent
- 51:22by getting to the second level. When we did get past that second
- 51:25level we hit some pretty good plays both in the scramble drill
- 51:30and a couple of those line up. Running plays, and especially
- 51:33some of the jet sweeps. So we did a pretty good job,
- 51:36total of getting yardage in those, you know, those big,
- 51:40gains offset, the negative plays.
- 51:42I want us to be more consistent, especially in the first half,
- 51:45right? Yeah, second thing we need the
- 51:50need need to get something going in the passing game consistently
- 51:55because we did a really good job of peppering in the short
- 51:58passing game against UNC, especially in the first half.
- 52:02And I didn't see hardly any of that in this game.
- 52:04And I know again, I know they were going vanilla here, but
- 52:09that doesn't mean you go away from what's working for you,
- 52:11right? It's true.
- 52:14It's true. So that was frustrating.
- 52:16And on defense, I want to see a j Hamm.
- 52:19Get be a little bit quicker with the trigger on adjusting those,
- 52:23those coverages. When he sees that they're
- 52:25clearly taking advantage of The Off, Man.
- 52:29And some of the, the cover six philosophies.
- 52:32He was going with for an extended period of time there
- 52:35because they were, they were just working it behind the
- 52:37corner in front of the safety. Every time there was a key down
- 52:40and we couldn't stop it. In on defense.
- 52:44Brian, you know, we get we gave up some big plays tonight.
- 52:48I think we can live with that. I think are pass.
- 52:50Rush is good enough. I do I think the password is
- 52:54good enough. Listen, you guys want to take
- 52:55five and seven? Step drops against Powell on
- 52:58garbage. Jordan Williams, Pollard
- 53:00Kendricks fuga bar no Griffin go for it.
- 53:06You're going to pay whether you actually get sacked or there
- 53:11right there and bearing down on you, so that's fine.
- 53:15But we have to be careful with it as we get into games against
- 53:18better defense has become, plays are going to kill us.
- 53:22What I will. What I will compliment.
- 53:24I'm gonna compliment real quick. We did a good job of when there
- 53:28was that big play of as Ted last and likes to say be like a
- 53:33goldfish, we forgot about it. We moved on, we play the next
- 53:37play, right? So That's what you like to see.
- 53:41We didn't let one bad play. Turn into five that turned into
- 53:44scores consistently. Yep, the other thing, I noticed,
- 53:509 of 19 on third and fourth, and almost 50% cannot do.
- 53:54That cannot do that, especially how bad they were against
- 53:58Monmouth on third down. Like, yes, this is, I will
- 54:03caveat here caveat. So I was just talking about the
- 54:07one scoring Drive, they had. In the second quarter almost
- 54:10half of those third down, conversions occurred on that one
- 54:13drive. All right, so we take that drive
- 54:16out there. It's more like 40%, 40%
- 54:23conversion versus you know, 65% question.
- 54:27Right at 50 productivity. Right in 50 percent conversion.
- 54:29Okay. Hi.
- 54:31The good 12 - plays. Three sacks nine.
- 54:34Tackles for loss, I thought we'd have more but clearly they were
- 54:39playing the underneath game. They were trying to hit him
- 54:41quick, but anytime we last week we're at 95%, I'd love to see
- 54:47the rush ratio, the quarterback hit ratio as well, but if you're
- 54:51twenty percent of getting a play in the backfield, That's one out
- 54:57of one every five plays, that is a good thing.
- 55:00As long as we stay between that 20, I'm going to hope there's a
- 55:03game where worth 30%, maybe it's next week and I get to be wrong
- 55:06about something that Brian you were not happy about the number
- 55:12of yards. They got your up, haha, I'm
- 55:15wanted less than 50 Prime there at one point eight per carry.
- 55:19We had 66 total yards. Rushing I want to under fifty
- 55:22eight, I'll allow it. I'll allow it.
- 55:26So I mean, good job overall by the defensive line linebacker
- 55:28played. Well, Tisdale had a really good
- 55:31game again. I only feel had a solid game
- 55:34again. Consistently on third down, went
- 55:37through nickel, though. Love it.
- 55:39That's it. I mean, that's was running off
- 55:41more often than not on third down, unless it was third and
- 55:45short. He was coming off.
- 55:47If we could sub, we've got that sub package going in with three
- 55:50really good defensive backs. Now Brian, the one last thing,
- 55:53they're going to be people looking And saying, we gave over
- 55:57300 yards to this offense. Do not count the last 86 yards.
- 56:03That was literally all of our freshmen and this.
- 56:08That wasn't even to deeper on. That was like three and forty
- 56:11out there. You can count those yards, but
- 56:13you need it in context and understand that, you know, this
- 56:16was this was garbage time, right?
- 56:18So, if you take that out, 260 yards of total offense.
- 56:24Yeah, I'd like to see under 250 but you know, all right.
- 56:30Brian if I Spect a shins. All right, Brian.
- 56:33Here's the deal, man. Yep, I'm looking at pics.
- 56:37We actually had a good week. Okay.
- 56:39A good week. We had only about it.
- 56:41You can go no worse than 500. Okay, I'll take that.
- 56:46No worse. That means you're not making
- 56:47much much ground on me. I'm not actually.
- 56:51I want seven and three it. I can go seven and Korea you, so
- 56:55you're so you might catch me. Let's see, or B?
- 56:590 b, 1 game back. No no no no.
- 57:01I'm not gonna be one game back because I started off so bad.
- 57:05That's going to take a little while.
- 57:07But here's what we got folks, Illinois's UVA Brian.
- 57:11Got that right? I still don't think UVA is a
- 57:16good team actually went back and looked at pick six previews and
- 57:20read some more stuff on Illinois that damn Nebraska game was a
- 57:23fucking anomaly but never really bad.
- 57:28They were that was the outlier. I want some of that game early.
- 57:33Own. And there was just like, no one
- 57:36near UVA players and it's like, Look at some of Brenda Donald
- 57:40Sterling's passes their Ducks. If he goes and throws those next
- 57:44week against crimes and stormed up, they're going to have 4 plus
- 57:47turnovers easy easy. So Brian got that one right?
- 57:53I missed on that one. Tennessee pit.
- 57:57I got that one right? Brian?
- 57:58I took pick came close. Man.
- 58:00I called the hooker coming in and almost getting the come
- 58:03back. I didn't quite finish it though.
- 58:05Hookers. Now the quarterback at
- 58:06Tennessee? Yep.
- 58:07Occasional quarterback. Tennessee.
- 58:08There's There's not even a question about.
- 58:10It looked more fluid in that offense.
- 58:12He was more consistent with throwing the ball again.
- 58:16I know I talked about it earlier, but Milton trying to
- 58:18throw anything further than 15 yards over shot every time every
- 58:24time like you would think, I mean it is, this would be one
- 58:28thing if there was tight coverage every time and all
- 58:30this, but he had three of those. His guys are either wide open or
- 58:35had two steps on the corner. Zack.
- 58:38You can't. This really miss those.
- 58:40Exactly. All right.
- 58:42Rutger Syracuse, we both cook. Rockers laying the two and a
- 58:44half. That was an ugly game.
- 58:47Syracuse was really in it to the end barriers has them fighting.
- 58:52I just don't think there's the talent there and it showed
- 58:54today, that the way Rutgers has recruited last couple years with
- 58:59its Keanu, who has a nasty bird as that or Papa John's.
- 59:10But the way, when they start playing The Talented teams even
- 59:13if they have the perfect game plan, they execute great.
- 59:16Eventually the fourth quarter of the gas is going to run out
- 59:20Milton is pathetic t. Oo SM.
- 59:24Yes very pathetic. We both got that one right NC
- 59:28State we both missed on. Yeah, it's not so much the
- 59:35defense. I think we expected Mike Leach
- 59:38to get some points on them but they couldn't run the ball
- 59:42against that defense. Yeah, that was shocking.
- 59:45That it took them. I mean they never really got the
- 59:47running game going. Leary was having to carry that
- 59:50offense and he you know, didn't do a bad job but he just didn't
- 59:55have a whole lot of help and you know that that was problematic.
- 59:59They really kind of got behind and you can't really fall behind
- 1:00:01against a team that Can do things offensively and then the
- 1:00:07defense for Mississippi State showed that they can, they can
- 1:00:11run with with a pretty decent offense.
- 1:00:14So NC State going down is definitely kind of my well, I
- 1:00:19don't call it an upset of the week, okay.
- 1:00:22All you've got to say some of us.
- 1:00:23Don't say what you said to me. I'll Fair we're not saying that
- 1:00:25yet. No, we're not saying that at
- 1:00:28all. Hey, but NC State going down
- 1:00:31definitely was kind of the, the Sha Shocker for me of the
- 1:00:34weekend in terms of teams, I thought we're going to kind of
- 1:00:38handle their business that didn't ya.
- 1:00:42So it's sort of shocking to see that but you know, kind of is
- 1:00:46what it is, right? So we both missed on that one.
- 1:00:50AB State, Miami. Told you Brian hangover game?
- 1:00:54Hangover Miami is officially not my pick to win the coastal.
- 1:01:00Oh sour. Word on the canes and it only
- 1:01:05took two weeks only to couple weeks but I got that one right
- 1:01:09Brian. Swing on it.
- 1:01:10We nailed the game of the day we nail game of the day.
- 1:01:14Iowa's goes into Iowa, State goes into Ames and handles
- 1:01:18business, such as clean water, but they also took a nail today.
- 1:01:22It took a big Elder day. You know what?
- 1:01:25I think. Matt camels probably found his
- 1:01:27home for the next 15 years. Okay.
- 1:01:31Now, I'll say that in two weeks, he's going to beat Oklahoma by
- 1:01:34like 20. He's the best coach in the
- 1:01:36country, Texas, not back. Not that that we both swung and
- 1:01:42missed on that one in Miss. Big-time terribly on that one,
- 1:01:46but we got Michigan, Right? Michigan will yield Michigan.
- 1:01:49Michigan, definitely Michigan. Without any expectations, is a
- 1:01:54different team. No, it's not Michigan.
- 1:01:57It's Jim Harbaugh with no. Tation Harbaugh with no
- 1:02:02expectations at Stanford. Look what they did.
- 1:02:05Yeah. Great.
- 1:02:06All right. Unbelievable.
- 1:02:07Even when they were doing okay people still writing them off
- 1:02:11Harbaugh when he went to San Francisco.
- 1:02:13After six. And ten year, there were no
- 1:02:15expectations, right. None 13, and 3 to Kyle Williams
- 1:02:20fumbles from punching a ticket to the Super Bowl.
- 1:02:24So, when there's no expectations on Harbaugh, I think he just
- 1:02:27coaches looser. All right, but we got that.
- 1:02:29One, right? And then the big game of the
- 1:02:32day. I thought Ohio state with them
- 1:02:36without Kavon Thibodeau, but Anthony Brown.
- 1:02:39We talked about it earlier handles business.
- 1:02:41We nailed that one organ wins out rights of our 14 and a half
- 1:02:47easily lays there. And I tell you what it's really
- 1:02:51interesting to see Does the playoff picture of the moment?
- 1:02:58It's I mean for real. It's really interesting because
- 1:03:01you have, you know, you feel like right now is a 2 SEC teams,
- 1:03:06guaranteed with Georgian Bama, don't know yet, we don't, it's
- 1:03:11too early. We don't list is too early.
- 1:03:14But I mean if you're using the sample size we have and
- 1:03:18projecting that out over 12 games, then the answer is, yes.
- 1:03:24True. Because right now, The Big Ten
- 1:03:30could be left out, the ACC could be left out.
- 1:03:34And you know, that would get things super interesting.
- 1:03:39Yeah, I also think honestly other than Oregon that means you
- 1:03:44gotta see ya, I mean, they're down 14 right now to Stanford.
- 1:03:50So I was more saying like other than Oregon.
- 1:03:53I mean has any other non SEC teams really looked impressive
- 1:04:04How many teams teams that are in position to make the play off
- 1:04:09that you thought were in position to make the play off?
- 1:04:12Well, I'm glad you got Georgia and Bam and you get Oregon has
- 1:04:15anyone else looked interested in two weeks?
- 1:04:18Not really because Notre Dame did not look in Brussels today.
- 1:04:21They mean they were borderline about the most certainly do so
- 1:04:26who knows and obviously so that gets us Brian five and four I'm
- 1:04:31six and Three at the moment. If Stanford covers, we're both
- 1:04:35going to finish about 500 and but Stanford cover.
- 1:04:41And also, I think we got that in the bag because I don't think I
- 1:04:44can see USC scoring 32 unanswered.
- 1:04:46Now they have, I won't find it in some way, so, you know, I'm
- 1:04:54going to get a few games back after starting absolutely
- 1:04:56terribly this year. Yeah.
- 1:04:58My week to went a whole lot better than my week one in my
- 1:05:01week. One.
- 1:05:01Close to 500. So, I think this should put me
- 1:05:06above 500 altogether. If Stanford ends up finishing,
- 1:05:11how we think, or I'll bring a movie, you will be at 500 and
- 1:05:15500. Okay, I'll take it.
- 1:05:18We had 500 yet. We're probably going to be up
- 1:05:22another hour or so. Yeah, ladies and gentlemen, if I
- 1:05:25get to 500 and you guys can officially say that, I'm just as
- 1:05:29good as flipping a quarter when it comes to betting.
- 1:05:31All these cases. We gotta we gotta go back and
- 1:05:35look at our combined pics here, Rutgers want to know, then 1 +
- 1:05:3912, + 12 + 23 + 2. We can go five and two combined
- 1:05:47same pics. Okay, might be finding
- 1:05:50something. We like the same game.
- 1:05:52Bet on a guy's as anything else. Popped up honking Nation.
- 1:05:55I don't think, I think we got this game unscathed, no injuries
- 1:06:00that we had, we had a couple. Of scares.
- 1:06:03You know, we had Mitchell with a Nick, we had obviously Braxton
- 1:06:05went back and then we had what was it Griffin had?
- 1:06:10That had that scare coming off of The Edge one time but I think
- 1:06:16overall you know nothing ended up being something that was
- 1:06:19going to keep guys from from significant time.
- 1:06:22Hopefully he had to Jenkins gets his foot, right?
- 1:06:25He'll be ready for next week. Yeah, I think it's got such a
- 1:06:30good will take Brian. There is one thing we missed
- 1:06:33Florida, State loses to Jacksonville State.
- 1:06:36I was actually about to mention that because I saw that pop up
- 1:06:39in my feed here after closing out of their minds against Notre
- 1:06:43Dame on all those. See what Notre Dame did today.
- 1:06:46I'm not sure that this is necessarily a Notre Dame team to
- 1:06:49really talk about is is what Notre Dame did to Florida state
- 1:06:53is that they're going to kind of be what happened to us. 2018,
- 1:07:04learn some new things about the next week.
- 1:07:06I don't, I don't know if I don't think the first two weeks.
- 1:07:08We really know a whole lot about that.
- 1:07:10I think we know that Their offensive line is is very much
- 1:07:14average this year. They record you next week, okay.
- 1:07:19Who is 2 and 0, but they have played Oregon, State, and
- 1:07:25Connecticut for Duty. Connecticut, today, 49 to
- 1:07:28nothing. That's can I give me a that's
- 1:07:32not going to be any game vacant Overlook.
- 1:07:34I mean produce probably not the greatest team out there but they
- 1:07:38will show up and they will give you hell for four quarters.
- 1:07:42So we want one. If they all come in there and
- 1:07:45start like they have the last couple weeks, they could take
- 1:07:50the L there, you know, cone cone showed some metal today and the
- 1:07:54way he finished that game. Yeah.
- 1:07:57But their defense isn't what it Was last year and their offense
- 1:08:01because of the offensive line. I mean, they had to find
- 1:08:05inventive ways to get Tyree the ball in space, where he can make
- 1:08:09some plays, because they're not a team that can just line up and
- 1:08:12run it down your throat anymore. Yeah.
- 1:08:14I think, I think the defense and they're, they're still good up
- 1:08:19front on the line, but I think not having a su su a Jeremiah.
- 1:08:24I was going to say that that second level is where they're
- 1:08:27missing it because I don't those guys have grown into the
- 1:08:31position of what they need to be in that defense, I think even
- 1:08:34more. So with a new defensive
- 1:08:36coordinator and Marcus Freeman, you know, certain people out
- 1:08:41there love Marcus Freeman and he is not doing great to begin with
- 1:08:46anything else, breaking Brian and I felt tomorrow.
- 1:08:51Yeah, boys. We kick it off tomorrow.
- 1:08:54Looking forward to see what the Colts can do against the
- 1:08:56Seahawks. I know Curtis wants us to get
- 1:09:00the W so that's what matters the dove please.
- 1:09:03I'll be probably listening. Yeah, a bunch of errands to do
- 1:09:06tomorrow. I'm going to probably be
- 1:09:07listening to the Niners game and the San Fran affiliate as I mow
- 1:09:12my grass tomorrow afternoon. So yeah, Brian if nothing else.
- 1:09:18Let's let's sign off here, let's watch the end of the holy word
- 1:09:21word. BYU just got like a nine-yard
- 1:09:25tackle for loss on like an inside hand.
- 1:09:27Hoff. Yep.
- 1:09:28That was the most. Unbelievable thing I've it was
- 1:09:30the most slow developing handoff I've ever seen and be white
- 1:09:33things. Blew it up that makes bronstein
- 1:09:36Springs. Little compressive, Arizona
- 1:09:38State in a dogfight with UNLV and USC having to make the
- 1:09:44comeback. So I'm going to sign it off.
