- 0:00Welcome back to the Deep Dive. That sound you just heard,
- 0:02reformed thinking. Well, that sets the stage for
- 0:05today's analysis. Our mission today is very
- 0:09specific. We are plunging into the
- 0:10theological forecast of Jonathan Edwards.
- 0:13We're looking at his structured scriptural analysis of the final
- 0:17total destruction of Satan's visible Kingdom here on Earth.
- 0:20That is right. And, you know, most people think
- 0:22of Edwards and they immediately go to the Great Awakening or
- 0:24maybe his big theological works. But here we're turning to a
- 0:28really key section of his book, history, the work of redemption.
- 0:31He gets past recounting what God has already done in history, you
- 0:35know, creation, the fall, Christ, life.
- 0:37And he starts using prophecy alone to guide his forecast.
- 0:41He's looking at events from his own day right up to the very end
- 0:43of the world. And what we're looking for here
- 0:45is more than just some general optimism.
- 0:48Edwards doesn't really deal in vague hope.
- 0:50He gives us a specific blueprint, the signs that come
- 0:53before this great work, the spiritual mechanism that drives
- 0:56it, the nature of the opposition.
- 0:57It's going to rise up against the church, and then the
- 1:00detailed, glorious result. So if you're curious about how
- 1:03this this towering figure of Reformed thought saw the success
- 1:07of Christ's redemption playing out on a geopolitical and
- 1:09spiritual stage, well, this deep dive should give you the context
- 1:13and clarity you need. We're analyzing those aspects
- 1:16Edwards thought were more evident from the prophetic word.
- 1:20It gives us a kind of shortcut to understanding this pivotal
- 1:23theological forecast. His view is rooted in a post
- 1:26millennial certainty, the belief that Christ's Kingdom is going
- 1:29to achieve a near universal triumph before his physical
- 1:32return. So we're really looking at his
- 1:34structured view on the mechanism, the how of this world
- 1:37altering event, especially when it comes to destroying the
- 1:40Kingdom of Antichrist. OK, let's unpack the initial
- 1:43condition that Edwards puts forward.
- 1:45He suggests that just before this glorious revival kicks off,
- 1:49the spiritual state of the world and will the visible church too,
- 1:52is going to be remarkably bleak. Spiritual interest will be at a
- 1:55real low point, kind of mirroring patterns we've seen
- 1:58before other great movements of God in history.
- 2:01Right. This idea of preparatory
- 2:03darkness is a recurring pattern for Edwards, both theologically
- 2:06and historically. You know, think about the world
- 2:08right before Christ's first coming.
- 2:10Prophetic expectation was high, but the spiritual reality, it
- 2:13was one of exceeding degeneracy, formalism, doctrinal corruption
- 2:17among the Jews. Or look at Europe just before
- 2:20the Reformation. I mean, the visible church was
- 2:22just mired and and moral decay. Edwards argues that God often
- 2:28lets things get seemingly hopeless to magnify his
- 2:31deliverance when it comes. And he connects this spiritual
- 2:34decline directly to the rise of what he calls infidelity and
- 2:37scoffers. He brings up Luke 18.8.
- 2:40When the Son of Man cometh, shall he find faith on the
- 2:43earth? Now that verse is often read as
- 2:44looking ahead to the second coming.
- 2:46But Edwards, with his specific focus here, he applies it
- 2:49directly to Christ's coming to establish his Kingdom, you know,
- 2:51to avenge his suffering church by destroying Antichrist.
- 2:55For him, it signals A widespread unbelief right before this
- 2:58deliverance happens. And that interpretation is very
- 3:00characteristic of his time. You have to remember Edwards was
- 3:03writing at the height of the Enlightenment.
- 3:05Rationalism and deism were highly confident, very
- 3:08influential, especially among the educated elites.
- 3:11Deism, this belief in a non intervening impersonal God, was
- 3:15scornful of supernatural revelation, of historical
- 3:18prophecy, of any kind of experiential faith.
- 3:22So Edward sees this rise of deism and skepticism, these
- 3:24scoffers walking after their own, less as the actual
- 3:27observable fulfillment of prophecies like Second Peter 3
- 3:30and Jude 1718. So he's not just talking in
- 3:33generalities about sin, he's actually pointing a finger at a
- 3:37specific intellectual movement in his own time, the scorn that
- 3:40was directed at what he called vital religion.
- 3:43OK, for Edwards, if Christianity isn't deeply personal and
- 3:47experiential, it's just formalism.
- 3:49And that lack of vital religion is precisely what prophecy
- 3:51predicts for the time right before Christ's triumph.
- 3:55It's a time when vice is common and true faith is minimal.
- 3:59And the spiritual winter it serves another function.
- 4:02It sets the stage for God's justice.
- 4:04This dark time justifies the long continued suffering and cry
- 4:07of the persecuted church. Edwards quotes Revelation 6.10
- 4:11Agonizing cry from under the altar.
- 4:13How long, O Lord, holy and true, does thou not judge and event
- 4:16our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
- 4:19This period of darkness and intense persecution is the
- 4:21ultimate reason for the coming deliverance.
- 4:23The prolonged silence makes the final judgement all the more
- 4:26dramatic and righteous. So the severity of the spiritual
- 4:28winter then kind of acts as a negative assurance that the
- 4:31promised spring is near. The world hits a spiritual low
- 4:35point which confirms that the time has come for the Lord to
- 4:38answer the prayers of those who have suffered for centuries
- 4:41under what He calls spiritual Babylon.
- 4:44It's the darkest point of the night, right before the dawn
- 4:47breaks. Right now, despite the cosmic
- 4:49size of the event, he's promising the annihilation of
- 4:52Satan's entire visible Kingdom. Edwards firmly counters a
- 4:55popular idea. The idea often held by
- 4:58Anabaptist groups back then was that this would all happen
- 5:01instantaneously, or just by some single great miracle, like an
- 5:05army of angels descending. And that distinction is crucial,
- 5:08isn't it? It's not some sudden global
- 5:10magic trick, he asserts. This world changing work will be
- 5:13wrought gradually through ordinary means, primarily the
- 5:16preaching of the gospel and the faithful use of the means of
- 5:18grace. Why do you think he was so
- 5:20insistent on ordinary means for such an extraordinary
- 5:23conclusion? Well, it speaks directly to
- 5:25Reformed theology concerning God's Providence.
- 5:28God typically operates through secondary causes.
- 5:31To expect a sudden single miracle would contradict the
- 5:34patterns we see all through redemptive history.
- 5:37He even gives historical parallels.
- 5:39The return from the Babylonish captivity wasn't one big March.
- 5:43It was gradual in successive companies slowly rebuilding the
- 5:47city and temple. Same with the destruction of the
- 5:50heathen Roman Empire. It was achieved by a gradual,
- 5:53though certainly swift, prevalency of the gospel over
- 5:55several centuries. So the.
- 5:56Speed is in the effect, not the method.
- 5:59The method is continuous labor and preaching, but the effect is
- 6:02an accelerated rate of conversion.
- 6:03He uses some powerful scriptural imagery to solidify this idea of
- 6:07gradual yet unstoppable expansion by the stone cut out
- 6:11of the mountain without hands in Daniel Two starts as a small
- 6:14thing, but it grows gradually until it fills the whole earth,
- 6:17shattering that colossal image of human kingdoms.
- 6:19That stone imagery is perfect. It shows Christ's Kingdom
- 6:23starting small may be as insignificant as the early
- 6:25missionary efforts in the 18th century, but destined for global
- 6:28domination. And Christ himself repeats this
- 6:31pattern in Matthew 13 when describing the Kingdom of
- 6:33heaven. It's like a tiny grain of
- 6:36mustard seed which starts small but becomes the largest herb.
- 6:39Or like Levin, hidden 3 measures of meal silently, internally and
- 6:43gradually influencing the whole mass until every bit is
- 6:47completely transformed. Which means we should be looking
- 6:49for successive conversions, spreading revivals that jump
- 6:53from one continent to another, and the gradual enlightening of
- 6:561 nation after another. That's some singular global
- 6:59moment where everyone just wakes up converted at the same time.
- 7:02The process is organic, unstoppable once it begins, and
- 7:06relies on human voices carrying the divine message.
- 7:08To further structure this progression, Edwards points to
- 7:11the prophetic periods detailed in Daniel 12, which signals
- 7:14successive glorious events. He references the 1290 days and
- 7:18the 13135 days. Now, without getting bogged down
- 7:21in precise calculations which Edwards knew were conjectural,
- 7:24the key insight is the relationship between those two
- 7:27periods. Right.
- 7:28So what's the difference between the blessing attached to the
- 7:301290 days and the one for the 13135 days?
- 7:33Well, the 13. 135 days is associated with a specific
- 7:36blessing. Blessed is he that waiteth and
- 7:39cometh to the 1305 and 30 days. This suggests that while the
- 7:43first period, the 1290 days, see some big events, maybe the start
- 7:46of the final push against Antichrist, the later period
- 7:49brings something much more glorious.
- 7:51It brings a settled state of spiritual happiness and peace.
- 7:54It's the time of ultimate flourishing after the great
- 7:57battles are finally won. So the whole process is
- 8:00structured sequentially. The first period brings conflict
- 8:02and success, which then leads to the second period of unrivaled
- 8:06spiritual prosperity. The victory over the enemy is
- 8:09followed by a period of deep flourishing, which fits that
- 8:12model of gradual yet swift progress perfectly.
- 8:16OK, so if the work is gradual and it's accomplished by means,
- 8:19we need to identify the source of its acceleration.
- 8:22What's the engine that takes these slow, ordinary means and
- 8:25gives them this extraordinary global effect?
- 8:28Edwards is completely clear on this.
- 8:31This great work is not achieved by the political authority of
- 8:33Princess, or the wisdom of learned people, or even the
- 8:36skill of preachers. It is solely by God's Spirit.
- 8:39It's a direct echo of Zechariah 4.6 and seven, not by might, nor
- 8:43by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of Hosts.
- 8:46This is a necessary theological safeguard against human pride.
- 8:50Human institutions, whether they're governmental or
- 8:52academic, they will not be the driving force behind this
- 8:55revolution. It's a sovereign spiritual work
- 8:57of divine intervention in the moral world.
- 8:59When God pours out His Spirit as promised in Ezekiel 39.29, the
- 9:03entire spiritual climate just changes dramatically.
- 9:05And the immediate effect of that addresses the very darkness we
- 9:08were just talking about. Vice and wickedness, which were
- 9:11so prevalent in that time of infidelity, will suddenly just a
- 9:14bait and flee away. And that vital religion, that
- 9:18deep experiential faith that was mocked as fanaticism, will
- 9:22suddenly revive and become universally honored and
- 9:25respected. It's a complete moral and social
- 9:27inversion. Right.
- 9:28And not only does the quality of religion change, but the speed
- 9:31and the scope of conversion during this time will be
- 9:34unprecedented. Edwards cites Isaiah 44 saying
- 9:37that the work will break forth and go on in such a manner as
- 9:40never has been hitherto. This is the Holy Spirit not just
- 9:44converting individuals, but also raising up and equipping the
- 9:47human instruments, ministers, missionaries, filling them with
- 9:50extraordinary knowledge, wisdom, and fervent zeal for this
- 9:53specific goal of promoting Christ's global Kingdom.
- 9:56I find that scriptural image he uses in Isaiah 60.8 so evocative
- 10:00for describing the speed of these conversions, multitudes
- 10:03flying as a cloud and as the doves to their windows.
- 10:07What does an image like that convey about the nature of the
- 10:09spiritual movement? Well, it conveys several things.
- 10:11First, volume, A cloud implies an immense multitude, far beyond
- 10:16any revival we've seen before. Second, speed.
- 10:20They are flying, moving rapidly. And 3rd instinct doves
- 10:24instinctively fly to their own windows, their nesting places,
- 10:28for shelter and safety. It suggests that once the gospel
- 10:31light is truly seen, the human soul, under the influence of the
- 10:34Spirit, just instinctually flees to Christ as its natural,
- 10:37necessary refuge. It's a massive, immediate and
- 10:41irresistible movement toward the goodness of the Lord, with
- 10:43streams of people flowing together continuously.
- 10:46So this divine acceleration is the mechanism, the means used.
- 10:49Preaching, teaching, evangelism are ordinary human instruments,
- 10:53but they're made overwhelmingly effective through the immediate
- 10:56operation of the Spirit. It shifts the focus away from
- 10:58the human ability of the preacher or the wisdom of a
- 11:01political strategy, and it places the entire burden and
- 11:04glory on the sovereign intention of God.
- 11:06Exactly. And this spirit fueled
- 11:08conversion wave is inseparable from the powerful proclamation
- 11:11of the gospel. Revelation 14 indicates that
- 11:14before Babylon falls, before Antichrist is destroyed, the
- 11:17everlasting gospel shall be powerfully preached and
- 11:20propagated in the world. The preaching is the means, the
- 11:23Spirit is the power. Edwards calls this glorious time
- 11:26ahead, the church's jubilee. He's drawing a typology from
- 11:30Leviticus 25, where the silver trumpets were sanded throughout
- 11:33Israel at the start of their jubilee year.
- 11:35And that was a year of incredible restoration.
- 11:37Debts were canceled, land went back to its original owners and
- 11:40bond servants were set free. And the Gospel itself is that
- 11:43silver trumpet announcing liberty, Isaiah 27 foretells.
- 11:47The great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which
- 11:49were ready to perish in the land of Assyria and the outcast of
- 11:53the land of Egypt. It is the sound of good tidings
- 11:56and release for those who were previously held captive by
- 11:58spiritual servitude to Satan or superstition or their debt to
- 12:02divine justice. What's so significant here is
- 12:05the widespread success that's anticipated this gospel
- 12:08preaching. Now, coupled with this massive
- 12:10outpouring of the Spirit, it causes specific doctrines that
- 12:13were previously ridiculed, especially those about original
- 12:16sin, atonement, sovereign grace. To revive it results in a
- 12:21massive turning away from organized heresy, from popery,
- 12:25and from other false ways that dominate the spiritual
- 12:27landscape. And this movement is predicted
- 12:29to spread swiftly through every tongue, kindred, and nation.
- 12:34Edwards understands that since the gospel is preached to every
- 12:36nation, kindred, tongue and people before the fall of
- 12:39Antichrist, it must be gloriously successful.
- 12:42It has to bring in vast multitudes from every corner of
- 12:45the earth. It's not some weak token effort.
- 12:48It's a successful evangelistic campaign on a global scale.
- 12:51It's compelling that the means stay ordinary, the simple act of
- 12:54preaching, but the result is globally extraordinary because
- 12:57the Spirit is poured out without measure.
- 12:59This revival turns scorn doctrines into universally
- 13:02accepted truth, and it formally introduces the Church's time of
- 13:05liberty, the jubilee that follows centuries of captivity.
- 13:09This period also implies a huge preparation phase.
- 13:12I mean, for the Gospel to reach every corner, there has to be a
- 13:15massive translation effort, logistical support, and a zeal
- 13:19for missions that's unparalleled in history.
- 13:22The Spirit not only converts the hearer, but also moves the
- 13:25Church to execute the Great Commission with unprecedented
- 13:28vigor. So we've discussed the coming
- 13:30glory, but Edwards reminds us that this transition from
- 13:33darkness to light is not seamless.
- 13:36It's not peaceful. As Christ begins to come forth
- 13:38in glory and Satan's visible Kingdom shows those first signs
- 13:42of cracking, the powers of darkness will rise up in a
- 13:45unified, violent and desperate opposition.
- 13:48Right. Edward sees this as the last and
- 13:50greatest effort of Satan to save his domain.
- 13:52He sees the foundations of his visibility and his authority
- 13:55starting to crack, which causes a catastrophic alarm throughout
- 13:58the realm of hell. I mean, if Satan was furious
- 14:01when he was cast out of just the Roman Empire in Constantine's
- 14:03Day, how much more intense is his rage when he's faced with
- 14:06the prospect of being cast out of the entire world?
- 14:09To understand the mechanism of this final conflict we have to
- 14:12turn to Revelation. The scriptural basis for this
- 14:15counter effort is found after the pouring out of the 6th vile
- 14:19in Revelation 16. We should probably be clear for
- 14:22the listener, what exactly are the vials in Edwards's prophetic
- 14:26framework? OK.
- 14:28In classical reformed interpretation of prophecy, the
- 14:30seven vials of Revelation represents 7 successive
- 14:33judgments poured out by God on the Roman Empire, primarily the
- 14:36anti Christian Kingdom which they saw as popery.
- 14:40The first five are generally seen as judgments already
- 14:43executed, maybe culminating with the Reformation.
- 14:46The 6th vial poured out on the river Euphrates is symbolic.
- 14:50It dries up the river, which is interpreted as preparing the way
- 14:53for the kings of the East. Just as the literal drying of
- 14:56the Euphrates allowed Cyrus to conquer Babylon historically, so
- 15:00Edward sees this as a weakening of the power structures around
- 15:03spiritual Babylon Rome to pave the way for its destruction.
- 15:06And it's after this weakening that the crucial counter move
- 15:09happens. 3 Unclean spirits, like frogs, go force to the kings of
- 15:12the earth. Right, and these spirits are
- 15:14gathering global support, uniting all opposition to the
- 15:18battle of the Great Day of God Almighty, which is often
- 15:20identified with Armageddon. This alliance is not regional.
- 15:24Edward sees it as total, uniting all the remaining visible forces
- 15:27of Satan, anti Christianity, Muhammadanism and heathenism.
- 15:32So this alliance represents the entire visible Kingdom of Satan
- 15:35across the whole world. Let's breakdown the sources of
- 15:39these three spirits, because this is where Edward's specific
- 15:4218th century geopolitical analysis really comes in.
- 15:44They come from the mouth of the dragon, the beast, and the false
- 15:48prophet. Right.
- 15:48The dragon commonly signifies the devil as he reigns over the
- 15:51heathen kingdoms, the gross idolatry that dominates vast
- 15:55swaths of Africa, Asia, and America.
- 15:58The beast refers specifically to Antichrist or Popery,
- 16:02representing the idolatrous Roman power.
- 16:04That's a standard Protestant interpretation.
- 16:06But the false prophet is the key historically.
- 16:09While sometimes that term is applied generally to the Pope
- 16:11and his clergy, Edwards makes a point of distinction here.
- 16:15He argues that the false prophet refers specifically to Muhammad,
- 16:18the figure his followers revered as the great prophet of God.
- 16:21And that's a major theological move.
- 16:23Why separate the false prophet from the beast from Popery?
- 16:27Because in Edwards Day, the Islamic Ottoman Empire was an
- 16:30immense geopolitical and spiritual force, Muhammadanism.
- 16:34It was just as large a visible obstacle to Christ's global
- 16:37Kingdom as Potpourri was. So by identifying the three
- 16:41spirits with the Dragon Heathenism, the beast Potpourri,
- 16:44and the false prophet Muhammadanism, he's saying that
- 16:47this final desperate battle pits the unified spirit of all three
- 16:51major false world systems against Christ and his Church.
- 16:55And this unified opposition will involve external force is
- 16:58joining hands, as Revelation 19 notes.
- 17:00But Edwards is quick to remind us that the fight is also deeply
- 17:03intellectual and spiritual. It includes subtle disputations,
- 17:06carnal reasoning, fierce persecution craft, and virulent
- 17:09reproaches aimed at those who profess vital religion.
- 17:12Satan employs his entire arsenal, gathering his most
- 17:15articulate and powerful instruments for one last stand.
- 17:17But despite the global scale and the intensity of this
- 17:20opposition, the outcome is never in doubt.
- 17:23Christ and his Church upset a complete, swift and total
- 17:26victory. This isn't a partial success.
- 17:29It's a definitive absolute routing of Satan's final effort.
- 17:33The advance of Christ and his Church is described in
- 17:35Revelation 19 in a way that is just August and glorious.
- 17:39Christ appears on a White Horse wearing the title King of Kings
- 17:43and Lord of Lords. It's a display of conquering
- 17:46majesty. The sheer magnitude of the
- 17:49overthrow is shown by that gruesome imagery of calling the
- 17:51fowls of heaven to eat the great supper of the flesh of kings,
- 17:55captains and mighty men. That signifies the total
- 17:58destruction of the military and political structures that oppose
- 18:00Christ. And the decisive moment of
- 18:03victory coincides precisely with the pouring out of the 7th vial.
- 18:07If the first six vials weakened, Antichrist the 7th delivers the
- 18:11fatal blow. Revelation 16 records that after
- 18:13the great army is gathered at Armageddon, the 7th Angel pours
- 18:17his vial into the air, and a great voice cries out.
- 18:19It is done. It is done.
- 18:21And what's the significance of the vial being poured into the
- 18:23air? Well, in Scripture the air is
- 18:25frequently referenced as the special seat of Satan's Kingdom.
- 18:29Ephesians 2.2 calls him the Prince of the power of the air.
- 18:33So pouring the final judgment into the air signals that the
- 18:35very atmosphere, the whole spiritual environment
- 18:38encompassing the earth, is purified.
- 18:40The entire visible dominion of Satan is shattered, marking the
- 18:44definitive completion of the work.
- 18:46And that blow is the finishing structural destruction to the
- 18:49world image described in Daniel 2.
- 18:51That stone which was growing gradually, now strikes the image
- 18:54of gold, silver, brass, iron and clay.
- 18:57The entire structure breaks to pieces and becomes like the
- 18:59chaff of the summer threshing floor, blown away completely.
- 19:02And This is why the victory is the greatest ever obtained in
- 19:05redemptive history. It's a total defeat of all of
- 19:08Satan's measures, leaving him baffled and confounded.
- 19:11His anti Christian, Muhammadan, and heathenish kingdoms all
- 19:15tumble down at the same time. Christ demonstrates his absolute
- 19:18dominion, dashing his enemies in pieces like a Potter's vessel,
- 19:22fulfilling prophecies like Isaiah 42, where the Church has
- 19:26made a new, sharp, threshing instrument that shall thresh the
- 19:28mountains and beat them. Small divine strength is
- 19:32manifestly seen coming out of apparent weakness.
- 19:35So following this great military and spiritual victory, Satan's
- 19:38visible Kingdom on Earth is systematically destroyed.
- 19:42Edwards details this destruction in four major comprehensive
- 19:45categories. This is where we see the global
- 19:48scope of the change. The world is wiped clean of
- 19:51these dominant structures of sin and opposition.
- 19:53Right. And that 7th vial poured into
- 19:55the air is the agent of this cleansing.
- 19:57It signals the comprehensive removal of the spiritual
- 20:00influence of darkness from the Earth's atmosphere, making way
- 20:03for the universal light of the Gospel.
- 20:04The first area of overthrow addresses spiritual corruption
- 20:08among those already under the light of the gospel.
- 20:10Before dealing with external heathens, internal enemies have
- 20:13to be purged. So heresies, infidelity and
- 20:16superstition, specifically Deism and other forms of intellectual
- 20:19skepticism that were so bold in Edward's time, she'll just
- 20:23vanish and be driven away to nothing.
- 20:25And the result is a doctrinal uniformity never before seen in
- 20:28the Church's history. Edward Sites.
- 20:30Zechariah 14.9. The Lord shall be king over all
- 20:34the earth in that day. Shall there be 1.
- 20:36Lord and His Name 1. All believers will agree on the
- 20:39great and key doctrines of the gospel, a doctrinal peace
- 20:42following centuries of contentious debate.
- 20:45All superstitious modes of worship will also be abolished,
- 20:48ensuring a universal purity of practice.
- 20:51Then comes the centerpiece of the prophetic victory for 18th
- 20:54century Reformed thinkers, the utter destruction of the Kingdom
- 20:56of Antichrist, which they identified as spiritual Babylon,
- 20:59the idolatrous Roman government, first under heathenism and then
- 21:03supremely under potpourri. Right.
- 21:05Edwards views the Reformation as merely weakening Antichrist,
- 21:08like a vial poured on his throne.
- 21:10But now he's utterly destroyed. Revelation 18 gives the explicit
- 21:15details. This cruel, proud city,
- 21:17spiritual Babylon, that lifted herself up to heaven, will be
- 21:20thrown, found with violence, like a great millstone cast into
- 21:24the sea, never to be found again.
- 21:26The destruction is so complete that she becomes a habitation of
- 21:28devils and the hold of every foul spirit.
- 21:31That imagery of the kings turning on Rome is particularly
- 21:34striking, isn't it? The political support base just
- 21:36collapses entirely. The kings of the earth who once
- 21:39gave their power and strength to the beast will now actively hate
- 21:41the whore, make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh and burn
- 21:44her with fire as it's described in Revelation 17.
- 21:48The political and economic loyalty that maintained that
- 21:50anti Christian power structure dissolves and the very powers
- 21:53that propped her up turned into her executioners.
- 21:55And it is necessary to state that we are reporting on Edwards
- 21:58historical interpretation of these specific prophecies.
- 22:02For him, the destruction of the centralized, corrupt, visible
- 22:05form of institutional oppression, spiritual Babylon,
- 22:09is synonymous with the success of Christ's rule.
- 22:12This abolition ensures that the path is clear for the simple,
- 22:15pure preaching of the gospel to dominate.
- 22:17OK, so the second and third major components of Satan's
- 22:20visible Kingdom to fall are the Muhammadan Empire and Jewish
- 22:23infidelity. Let's start with Muhammadanism.
- 22:27Edwards views this as the smoke which ascended from the
- 22:29bottomless pit represented by the locusts and horsemen in
- 22:33Revelation 9. Right Muhammadanism, despite
- 22:35being upheld by a vast empire, the Ottomans were a massive
- 22:38force in his day and widely propagated geographically, shall
- 22:42be utterly scattered. The smoke will vanish before the
- 22:45light of the glorious Gospel day.
- 22:47This underscores the conviction that political and military
- 22:50strength is no match for the spiritual reality of the
- 22:52outpouring of the Spirit. An established global empire is
- 22:55fragile when confronted by divine light.
- 22:58Then we addressed the Jewish infidelity after 17 centuries of
- 23:01national obstinacy following the crucifixion of Christ.
- 23:04The thick veil that blinds Israel will be removed as
- 23:07promised in 2nd Corinthians 3, and this is defined as a
- 23:10national conversion, not just scattered individuals
- 23:13integrating into Gentile churches.
- 23:15And here is where the deeply emotional and theological
- 23:18dimension comes in. Their hearts will be melted and
- 23:20renewed by the Spirit, leading to profound penitence.
- 23:24They will mourn for Christ, looking on him whom they have
- 23:27pierced, mourning for Him as one mourns for an only Son, as
- 23:31foretold in Zechariah 12. This is an awakening rooted in a
- 23:35national recognition of their rejection of the Messiah,
- 23:38leading to widespread faith in Him.
- 23:40And Edward stresses that nothing is more certainly foretold in
- 23:43Scripture than this national conversion, specifically
- 23:46referencing Romans 11. He sees their continued
- 23:48preservation as a distinct nation for over 1600 years,
- 23:52dispersed, yet retaining their identity across the globe as a
- 23:55continual miracle providing tangible proof of God's explicit
- 23:59intention to restore them. And this restoration also
- 24:02requires the reunification of the remaining 10 tribes, often
- 24:05called Ephraim, with Judah. They will be brought in together
- 24:08as one people, returning to the unity they had under David and
- 24:11Solomon, fulfilling prophecies in Hosea and Ezekiel.
- 24:15The physical in Gathering is seen as coinciding with the
- 24:17spiritual in Gathering. And the timing of this
- 24:20conversion is prophetically synchronized with a Gentile
- 24:23triumph. Romans 11 states that they're
- 24:25coming in will be life from the dead to the Gentiles.
- 24:28We really need to unpack this monumental phrase.
- 24:30What does Edward suggest life from the dead means in this
- 24:33context? Is it just a quantitative
- 24:35increase in missionary success, or is it something more?
- 24:37It's generally understood to be qualitative, though it certainly
- 24:40includes massive conversions. Life from the dead suggests A
- 24:43resurrection level spiritual intensity, a new creation.
- 24:48The restoration of Israel is seen as releasing such a potent
- 24:51spiritual blessing and such a demonstration of God's
- 24:54faithfulness, the fulfilling of promises made to Abraham, that
- 24:57it will inject an entirely new level of spiritual vigor,
- 25:00vibrancy, and holiness into the already flourishing Gentile
- 25:04church. The conversion of Israel is a
- 25:06catalytic event leading to a spiritual experience for the
- 25:09global church, far surpassing even the glories of that initial
- 25:12Gentile success. So the spiritual harvest in the
- 25:15Gentile world might be great, but after the Jewish conversion,
- 25:18there's a subsequent, even greater spiritual awakening, a
- 25:21resurrection of fervor, piety, and purity that follows.
- 25:25That's a powerful incentive to consider the Jewish Inn
- 25:27gathering not as an isolated event, but as the trigger for
- 25:31the ultimate spiritual climax of the church's time on earth.
- 25:34Right, and the final massive aspect of the overthrow is the
- 25:38complete end of gross heathenism.
- 25:41Edwards notes that heathenism possessed the largest part of
- 25:43the earth in his day, far more adherence than all Christian or
- 25:47Muhammadan professions combined. This darkness shall be totally
- 25:51enlightened. And this requires an
- 25:53unparalleled mobilization. He foresees a wonderful spirit
- 25:57of pity and zeal poured into multitudes across the Christian
- 26:00world, inspiring them to carry the gospel abroad into regions
- 26:04that were previously considered inaccessible.
- 26:07This joyful sound will finally reach the vast, long neglected
- 26:10regions of the Earth that have been covered with darkness for
- 26:12millennia. The geographical scope he
- 26:15outlines is truly revolutionary, especially for an 18th century
- 26:18New England minister who had never traveled beyond the
- 26:20colonies. He explicitly names three vast
- 26:23regions that will be visited by glorious light, demonstrating a
- 26:26world map view of prophetic expectation.
- 26:29Let's detail these three areas, keeping in mind how daring this
- 26:32vision must have been in the 1740s.
- 26:34First, Africa. Edwards identifies that nations
- 26:37in Africa then viewed by many Westerners as below the level of
- 26:42beasts due to their deep barbarity and lack of political
- 26:45organization. Harsh perspective, we report as
- 26:49reflecting the attitudes of his era, will become a civil,
- 26:52Christian and holy people. This predicts the total
- 26:55spiritual transformation and civilization of the entire
- 26:57continent, overturning deeply entrenched societal darkness.
- 27:012nd, the vast continent of America.
- 27:04Edward sees America, despite having Christian settlements, as
- 27:08largely covered with barbarous ignorance due to the presence of
- 27:11indigenous populations engaged in what he called devil worship.
- 27:15He prophesized that this entire continent will be covered
- 27:17everywhere with glorious gospel light, replacing that devil
- 27:20worship with praise to Christ. And 3rd, the populist part of
- 27:23the world known as the East Indies.
- 27:25So modern Asia, which was dominated by complex, long
- 27:28standing religious systems and often engaged in devil worship.
- 27:31Edwards predicts the Kingdom of Christ will be established here,
- 27:34overturning ancient civilizations.
- 27:36He even extends this geographical vision to newly
- 27:39discovered lands toward the North and South Poles, where
- 27:42people live in isolation and often in savage conditions.
- 27:45The idea that evangelism would reach every single corner,
- 27:48regardless of physical or cultural obstacle, really
- 27:51defines the universality of this vision.
- 27:53And this comprehensive victory fulfills Isaiah 35.1.
- 27:56The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them,
- 27:59and the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the Rose.
- 28:03It's the total abolishing of idols and the scattering of
- 28:06darkness from the earth, reaching even the most remote
- 28:08and seemingly hopeless parts of the globe.
- 28:11The fourfold overthrow, Popery, Muhammadanism, Jewish unbelief
- 28:15and heathenism leaves no stone unturned in the visible Kingdom
- 28:19of Satan. So if we synthesize this
- 28:21fourfold overthrow, the scope of Christ's rule becomes crystal
- 28:24clear. It means the fulfillment of that
- 28:26ancient promise made to Abraham, that in his seed all the
- 28:29families of the earth shall be blessed.
- 28:32Christ becomes the desire of all nations, as Haggai 2 foretells.
- 28:35And Edwards insists the Kingdom will extend to the whole earth
- 28:38in the most strict and literal sense.
- 28:41There's no room for exceptions or reservations.
- 28:44To illustrate this total coverage, he leans on the
- 28:47metaphor in Isaiah 11.9. For the earth shall be full of
- 28:51the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.
- 28:54That analogy is perfect for conveying totality, isn't it?
- 28:57Just as there's no part of the sea channel or bed that isn't
- 29:00covered by water, there'll be no part of the world of mankind, no
- 29:03tribe or remote nation that is without the knowledge of God.
- 29:06And this universal dominion will be given under the whole heaven,
- 29:09as Daniel 7 promises. We discussed earlier that the
- 29:13casting out of Satan from the Roman Empire was described in
- 29:16Scripture as Satan being cast out of heaven to the earth.
- 29:19Well now through this final work of redemption, he is cast out of
- 29:22the earth as well and shut up in the bottomless pit.
- 29:25This shift, the total overthrow of Satan's visible Kingdom which
- 29:29it stood since the confusion of Babel, is regarded as the single
- 29:32greatest revolution that has ever occurred in the world's
- 29:35history. It's why Revelation 16 compares
- 29:38it to a mighty earthquake such as was not.
- 29:41Since men were upon Earth, it shatters the entire corrupted
- 29:45structure of global society. And this dispensation is so
- 29:48earth shattering that it's likened to Christ's physical
- 29:50coming to judgment, far more so than any preceding work.
- 29:54The accompanying spiritual resurrection of the Church of
- 29:56God, seen in the widespread conversion and purity, resembles
- 29:59the general resurrection at the end of the world.
- 30:02This is the time when Christ destroys Antichrist with the
- 30:04brightness of his coming. As noted inside the
- 30:06Thessalonians, the work is decisive, final and glorious.
- 30:11We should acknowledge, though, that this glorious introduction
- 30:13isn't entirely peaceful for the enemies of Christ.
- 30:16It's preceded by the visible, awful hand of God executing
- 30:20terrible judgments and fearful destruction upon God's enemies.
- 30:24This divine vengeance is directed against blasphemers,
- 30:27deists, obstinate heretics, and other clear enemies of the
- 30:30Gospel who persist in their opposition.
- 30:32The severity of the judgments is particularly concentrated
- 30:35against anti Christian persecutors.
- 30:37The cruel perpetrators of the Church of Rome will suffer far
- 30:40more dreadful punishments than they inflicted on the Saints,
- 30:43fulfilling Revelation 18. It's likened to casting
- 30:46Antichrist alive into the Lake of Fire, which symbolizes
- 30:50immediate and complete destruction, not just a gradual
- 30:52decline. And the physical imagery used to
- 30:54describe these judgments really emphasizes their crushing
- 30:58finality. They're compared to great
- 31:00hailstones from heaven, every stone about the weight of a
- 31:03talent signaling the exceeding greatness of the plague, as seen
- 31:06in Revelation 16. This is also the time of the
- 31:09treading of the winepress described in Revelation 14,
- 31:12where God executes his fierce wrath.
- 31:15But these judgments signal the absolute conclusion of the
- 31:17church's suffering state. Her afflicted state, which
- 31:20lasted from Christ's resurrection until this time,
- 31:23finally comes to an end. Isaiah 40 proclaims that her
- 31:26warfare is accomplished and her iniquity is pardoned.
- 31:29The Lord has removed the cup of trembling from her hand, and she
- 31:32will drink it no more. The historical period of the
- 31:34church operating under a men's arrest and persecution is over.
- 31:38The entire era preceding this was the Church's sewing time, a
- 31:42time of Labor, often sowing in tears and in blood.
- 31:45Now is the glorious harvest, where she comes again rejoicing,
- 31:48bringing her sheaves with her. The time of travail for the
- 31:51woman close with the sun is concluded, and the spiritual
- 31:54manchild is brought forth in universal glory and peace.
- 31:58And with sorrow conclusively giving way to triumph, the
- 32:01praises ascending to God will be truly universal.
- 32:04They will rise from all parts of the earth as promised in Isaiah
- 32:0742, filling not only the earth but also heaven itself with
- 32:10shouts of joy. The Church on earth and the
- 32:13Church in heaven will unite in rejoicing and praising God with
- 32:15one heart. Edward specifically draws
- 32:18attention to the fact that the holy apostles and prophets in
- 32:20heaven will rejoice because God has avenged them, linking this
- 32:23overthrow directly back to their historical sufferings and those
- 32:27long continued cries for justice.
- 32:29This joy is magnificently described in Isaiah 44.23.
- 32:34Sing, O ye heavens, for the Lord hath done it.
- 32:37Shout ye lower parts of the earth, break forth into singing,
- 32:41ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein.
- 32:44The Universal Church in heaven and on earth sings joyful
- 32:47praises on this occasion, as detailed powerfully in the
- 32:50beginning of the 19th chapter of Revelation, when the voice of a
- 32:52great multitude, child's Alleluia for the Lord God
- 32:55Omnipotent, reigneth. And the culmination of this
- 32:58entire dispensation is the definitive introduction of
- 33:00Christ's everlasting Kingdom. The old heavens and old earth,
- 33:04referring to the existing order erupted by sin, darkness and
- 33:07opposition, pass away in a greater measure than ever
- 33:10before. The new heavens and new earth,
- 33:12representing the glorious state of peace and purity, are set up
- 33:16in a far more magnificent manner, bringing this entire
- 33:18phase of the success of Christ's purchase to its climax.
- 33:21And this new state is not the eternal state, but that glorious
- 33:24long period of peace and spiritual flourishing known
- 33:27generally as the Millennium, where the Church enjoys
- 33:30uninterrupted light and fellowship, preparing the world
- 33:32for Christ's final physical return.
- 33:34So Edwards, drawing purely from prophecy, provides a remarkably
- 33:38detailed and specific sequence for the ultimate triumph of
- 33:42Christ's Kingdom. Let's just review the blueprint
- 33:44for the listener. We start in a time of spiritual
- 33:47darkness and widespread infidelity, followed by the
- 33:50sudden, swift revival triggered by the pouring out of the Spirit
- 33:53the Church's jubilee. Right.
- 33:55And this success provokes the final unified opposition, the
- 33:59Triple Alliance of the Dragon Heathenism, the Beast Potpourri
- 34:03and the False Prophet Muhammadanism.
- 34:05The victory arrives decisively, with the pouring out of the 7th
- 34:08vial into the air, signaling the absolute completion of the work
- 34:12and the total overthrow of all of Satan's visible kingdoms.
- 34:14And that overthrow is comprehensive and fourfold the
- 34:18abolition of internal heresies and the fall of spiritual
- 34:20Babylon, the collapse of the Muhammadan Empire, the highly
- 34:23anticipated national conversion of the Jews, and finally the
- 34:26Enlightenment of all heathenish darkness across continents like
- 34:29Africa, America, and Asia. The true value of this prophetic
- 34:32view, especially from this Reformed viewpoint, is seeing
- 34:35God's reliance on the ordinary means of grace, the faithful
- 34:39preaching of the gospel, even during the world's greatest
- 34:42spiritual revolutions. It assures us that God's
- 34:45providential control extends even to the precise geopolitical
- 34:49fall of specific empires and false religions, all through the
- 34:52mechanism of widespread conversion.
- 34:55It grounds the grand prophetic narrative in the diligent use of
- 34:58the simple means appointed by Christ.
- 35:00It's a work executed through the steady process of evangelism,
- 35:03just amplified by sovereign grace.
- 35:05So here's the final thought to consider that builds directly on
- 35:08Edwards source material. We've analyzed how Edwards,
- 35:11following Romans 11, insists that the national calling of
- 35:14Israel will be life from the dead to the Gentiles.
- 35:17This implies a spiritual surge of resurrection level intensity.
- 35:21So if the conversion of the Jews follows the initial glorious,
- 35:25widespread conversion of the Gentiles and results in a
- 35:27blessing that is life from the dead, what does that suggest
- 35:30about the depth and the qualitative experience of the
- 35:33spiritual blessings still awaiting the global church even
- 35:35after Christ's Kingdom is established everywhere?
- 35:38A compelling question to Mull over as you reflect on the
- 35:41absolute triumph of the work of redemption.
- 35:44Thank you for joining us for this deep dive into prophetic
- 35:46scripture. We look forward to your
- 35:48continued knowledge seeking.
