Transcript
- 0:00Chris Powell Couch coach live. How you doing Connor?
- 0:03I'm not sure if you listen to what Dale Earnhardt junior said
- 0:06on his podcast the other day. He said that quote this kid has
- 0:10the runway to become a multi time NASCAR Cup champion.
- 0:14What was your thoughts on his statement and just the praise of
- 0:18Dale Junior? Yeah, it's.
- 0:20It's really cool to have, you know, a guy like Dale kind of
- 0:23supporting me. I'm racing for him later.
- 0:24This year in the Xfinity Series and in the 88 car and you know,
- 0:28obviously. You know, I've already worked
- 0:30with them quite a bit to, you know, put that deal together
- 0:33and, you know, I've been around him a lot at the.
- 0:34Late model racetrack. And you know he's just been a
- 0:37good guy to kind of help give me advice and you know he.
- 0:42It was funny, we. Were leaving Florence one one
- 0:44day after a race and he came up to me.
- 0:46He's like. Hey, like, where do you live?
- 0:47And I was like, I live in Moore, so he's like, we ought to ride
- 0:49to Florence together next. Time we go to the racetrack and
- 0:52you know, it's kind of cool a guy like.
- 0:53Dill Earnhardt. Junior, you know, is as big of a
- 0:56name as he may be like. It's just cool that, you know,
- 0:59he is just another one of us and he's a racer and you know, he
- 1:03doesn't want to be kind of known for how big of a, you know,
- 1:06household racing name he is. He just is another driver and
- 1:09you know, it's really cool that you know, he, he says those
- 1:12things about me and you know, he has the faith to put me in his
- 1:15Xfinity car. Shane Connor.
- 1:16Charlotte Observer. So when you were growing up in
- 1:19Charlotte, obviously I know you ended up getting you know,
- 1:21involved with NASCAR race specifically later after you
- 1:24started, you know meet with work with Kevin Harvick's son
- 1:27specifically. But what was kind of the impact
- 1:29of NASCAR to you growing up in Charlotte?
- 1:31What, you know, what kind of influence did the sport just
- 1:33have in general, even as as in your early days of racing?
- 1:37Yeah, honestly, I wasn't the biggest NASCAR fan growing up.
- 1:40I raced Rd. Course Go Karts and you know
- 1:42kind of grew up watching Formula One and you know all the big
- 1:45sports car races. And you know I never really was
- 1:48too big of a NASCAR fan until I met Kevin and kind of got more
- 1:52of an in depth sense of you know what the NASCAR community and
- 1:55you know what it's like on kind of this side of of things in the
- 1:59racing world. And you know growing up I, you
- 2:01know, I went to a few races and you know I was just never that
- 2:05big into it. I I kind of was focused on what
- 2:07I was doing and you know, that was road racing and you know,
- 2:10you know, trying to get to. You know, go.
- 2:13Race in Europe and I race go karts in Europe and I wanted to
- 2:15race F1 and you know, it kind of just became a, you know, a fever
- 2:19dream almost and it wasn't possible for me.
- 2:21So, you know, it was, it was definitely, I'm fortunate that I
- 2:25lived in Charlotte. But you know, I think growing
- 2:27up, I didn't really have that big of, you know, an interest to
- 2:30race NASCAR one day until I really learn more about it.
- 2:33And being a younger driver now and having experience in
- 2:36different forms of Motorsports, what are some things about
- 2:38NASCAR that really kind of make it stand out to you?
- 2:43I think just the, the popularity around NASCAR, you know, I feel
- 2:46like everybody knows about NASCAR and you know, knows you
- 2:51know the big names in NASCAR. And you know if you kind of
- 2:55talk, say the same thing about other forms of Motorsports in
- 2:58North America, it's not the same, right.
- 3:00Not everybody knows about IndyCar, not every knows, not
- 3:03everybody knows what IMSA is. But you know, I feel like it's
- 3:06just the biggest form of Motorsports in North America.
- 3:09And I feel like that's what makes it appealing to me.
- 3:11And you know, I kind of want to just be the best and whatever I
- 3:14get in And you know, if that means that you know I'm going to
- 3:17race NASCAR, then you know I'm going to put put all my work
- 3:20into, you know, hopefully being the best in in NASCAR one day.
- 3:23John Newbie, NBC. I mean, you've already had kind
- 3:26of a baptism by fire of the aggressiveness of NASCAR.
- 3:30What are some of the other you know things that you expect to
- 3:32face as like a learning curvage prepare you know if your first
- 3:35Xfinity race. Yeah, I mean, a lot of the stuff
- 3:39that happened at Coda was to no fault but my own.
- 3:43You know, just rookie mistakes kind of that shouldn't have been
- 3:46made. And you know, I don't, I don't
- 3:48really want to say it was more aggressive than other racing
- 3:50that I've done previously. I don't.
- 3:51I don't really think it was, you know, I I think it was just me
- 3:56not not executing, not doing my job.
- 3:58But you know, I think as we move on, the biggest thing for me,
- 4:01it's going to be getting on the big ovals and kind of learning
- 4:03how the car feels. I don't think the racecraft to
- 4:06it's going to be that big of a, you know, difference to me.
- 4:10You know, I feel like some of the air stuff in the trucks is
- 4:12going to be different. And you know, there's there's a
- 4:14few things, but I feel like the biggest thing is just going to
- 4:17be figuring out how to race on a big Oval and you know how to go
- 4:20fast. You know, I feel like it's not
- 4:22going to be the speed that kind of scares me.
- 4:24It's just the technique and and you know what what that takes.
- 4:27But you know, I've been working really hard and I've done a lot
- 4:30of simulator work already and I don't even race until, you know,
- 4:33the end of the year. So, you know, it's it's all
- 4:36about preparation for me and you know, I'm doing everything I can
- 4:38to be prepared for the end of the year.
- 4:39You've raced in so many different types of like vehicles
- 4:43already, so many different type of competitions.
- 4:46Being that you're so young already, are there things that
- 4:49you wish that could be integrated for fan experiences,
- 4:53crowd experiences that could really help NASCAR grow over
- 4:56well? You know, drawing bigger crowds
- 4:59that people could relate better to?
- 5:02You know, I always think there's things that as a sport we can do
- 5:05better. I went to an F1 race in 2020 and
- 5:07that made US look like we were going to the County Fair.
- 5:10Almost like it was crazy how much money goes into every event
- 5:14in F1. And I don't think it's really
- 5:16possible to do that for us just because we're not.
- 5:19We're not F1 and you know NASCAR isn't F1, but you know a lot of
- 5:23the hospitality stuff that they do, making it truly a fan
- 5:27experience and you know, giving the people that are willing to,
- 5:30you know, spend that kind of money to come to the races and
- 5:33you know, have that kind of experience, giving them
- 5:35somewhere to go would definitely be helpful.
- 5:37But you know, honestly, I feel like it's tough 'cause, you
- 5:41know, F1 is such a big sport and you know they have, it's just
- 5:45it's way bigger and you know, the amount of, it's just crazy,
- 5:48the amount of money that goes into every single F1 event.
- 5:52I don't know the logistics of it all, but I don't know if it'd be
- 5:55possible for us to do and I doubt it would.
- 5:57But you know, that was definitely an eye open
- 5:59experience for me. But I don't really know what
- 6:02what we could do different. Steve Post from Motor Racing
- 6:05Network. Connor, you've mentioned
- 6:06multiple times here at the end of the year.
- 6:08You're working toward the end of the year.
- 6:11How are you with the patience to to wait till the end of the
- 6:14year? We all want it now.
- 6:16We all want to be in the Xfinity race today and the Cup race
- 6:18tomorrow. How are you?
- 6:19How are you managing yourself and the patience to to to to to
- 6:23work the process until at the appropriate time to get these
- 6:26opportunities? Yeah, patience is a big thing
- 6:29for me. And, you know, I feel like even
- 6:32not only this year but the years to come, just not rushing myself
- 6:36into anything, not forcing anything.
- 6:38I don't want anybody to put me in a situation that I'm not
- 6:41ready for yet. And, you know, I feel like it's
- 6:43honestly a good thing that I get the next few months to, you
- 6:46know, race 10 ARCA races before I go into an Xfinity race and,
- 6:50you know, before I, you know, kind of move to the next level.
- 6:53I want to make sure that I'm prepared and I won't get thrown
- 6:55in the deep end. So you know it's frustrating as
- 6:58it may be that I have to wait until, you know September to
- 7:00make my first Xfinity start. I think it'll honestly be better
- 7:03for me in the long term just because I'll, I'll be more
- 7:05prepared. But you know I do wake up every
- 7:08morning and countdown the days till I go racing and you know
- 7:11the next NASCAR, my next NASCAR race and I think my next one is
- 7:15not until August or September. But you know, it is tough, but I
- 7:20think it'll it'll play out play out for me in the long term,
- 7:22probably in in a better, it'll be better for me in the long
- 7:25term, I hope. Steven Sykes alive in global
- 7:29media. As a young man you had to speed
- 7:32up obviously a lot of different life skills faster than what
- 7:34most would go through, what leadership and also business
- 7:38skills that you had to learn differently than would you say
- 7:41in terms of how to handling business money contracts that
- 7:44you had to learn differently than before.
- 7:46Yeah, I've definitely had to grow up, grow up fast.
- 7:48And you know that's a big thing that people kind of maybe forget
- 7:51sometimes as I am still am I I am still 17 and I'm a kid.
- 7:55But you know, with that I, you know, have to be able to deal
- 7:59with sponsors and you know, I'm basically, I have a full time
- 8:05career almost at 17 and at times it is tough, right?
- 8:09You know people you know my dad gets hard on me at times but
- 8:13it's all it's all out of a place I love.
- 8:15But you know it's it's tough sometimes I'm experiencing
- 8:18everything for the first time and you know I'm still learning
- 8:21every day what you know, real world problems and you know
- 8:25whatever may come my way. But it's been so good for me as
- 8:29a as a human being to grow up this fast and deal with these
- 8:32things every day. And you know I just got put into
- 8:36the real world, real world at a young age.
- 8:38But it's been it's been really cool for me getting to
- 8:41experience this and you know I don't go to high school.
- 8:43I do online school and you know, my life's a lot different than a
- 8:46normal 17 year old, but it's all for the better I think.
- 8:49Well, before we close here with Connor, I want to share some
- 8:52pretty impressive stats so far here just for 2024.
- 8:56Started off the season winning the Rolex 24.
- 8:59Go on to Sebring and just last week at Cody you made your
- 9:04NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut.
- 9:06You win the poll at Coda. Now here you are going to be
- 9:10going NASCAR Xfinity Series racing later this season.
- 9:14Just close this out here by talking a little bit about the
- 9:17transition from sports car racing to NASCAR.
- 9:23Yeah, it's completely different and you know, it's not easy
- 9:28making the transition, but I feel like I've raced in so many
- 9:30different disciplines already that I feel comfortable making
- 9:34the transition. You know, I I definitely do
- 9:37struggle from time to time. You know, when I go back and
- 9:40forth and have to learn things again and you know, learn new
- 9:43things. It's definitely not easy, but
- 9:45it's at the end of the day making making me a better race
- 9:48car driver and helping make me better.
- 9:50So, you know, I try not to worry about the days that don't go too
- 9:54well. I don't.
- 9:56I don't worry about it too much because I know that, you know,
- 9:58I'm going to have those days and, you know, not everything's
- 10:02butterflies and rainbows and you know, it's not all going to be
- 10:05good. But, you know, I'm still so
- 10:07young and I have a lot of time to learn.
- 10:09And you know, that's the biggest thing for me is don't focus on
- 10:11the results, just focus on getting better.
- 10:13And you know, that's that's the biggest thing that, you know,
- 10:16I've had to learn at a young age is, you know, you're not always
- 10:18going to succeed and it's not always going to go well.
- 10:20But you know, you're just kind of building for your future.
- 10:23And you know, that's that's been a hard thing for me to learn,
- 10:27but it's been a good lesson.
