Chapter 5: Best Human
Ken's daughter Claire sends a present: the PawTalk Pro 3, a collar that turns barks into words, trained on two million hours of devoted owners. It needs an app, a password with a special character, and forty-one pages of terms.
Tess refuses to bark into it. Ken says "Woof" and it translates him. Then, on a video call with the grandsons, the collar announces "I love you, best human!", and a dog who has said nothing for six weeks decides that enough is enough.
Ken reverses into the fridge.
