- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hey y'all, um, this is Sam Van Ryder.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: I'm uh co-founder of Cyberset Community.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Um, and I just wanted to take a quick moment to talk about burnout.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Um at the conference, if you were here that this year, Joe Marshall closed this out with a really interesting and new framework, an official framework that he just uh put out there for everybody to use to basically measure burnout.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: And uh that got a lot of thoughts turning in my head.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Um and the for me, look, first I'm not in a cyber practitioner role, right?
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: I'm I I am in an account management role for large strategic accounts within my day job.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: And then I obviously am co-founder of this great big community we all have.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Um and so I'm I'm basically burning the candle at both ends in a lot in a lot of cases.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Um, but you don't have to be somebody in a specific profession.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: You don't have to be sitting in a sock or a high-level executive or whatever, or you know, it doesn't matter what kind of position or what level you're at.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Uh it can happen to everybody.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: And I did this to myself.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm in that role right now where I notice burnout.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Um with I've usually not been one to recognize it because I've always been a go, go, go, go, uh typical Gen X, you know, keep moving, don't let things stop, and always looking for the next thing and always thinking about the next thing.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: And um it's for me, I started getting some symptoms around it that told me, hey, something's off.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And after seeing Joe's Joe's presentation, it really just kind of rang a bell.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: And I'm not that deep, I'm not into some of the other uh uh areas of burnout that he talks about.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: I'm literally in that first phase, but it's early enough for me to address it.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: So um I did a lot of this myself between doing the two two jobs that I do, and then I had some other things that I've been working on at home, some major projects, and I really did this to myself.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: So, first of all, here's a here's a call to you to go.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: If you even think you're getting into that realm, go check out Joe's presentation.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Even if you're not and you know people that are, go check out Joe's presentation.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: It's a it's it's a great presentation.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of really good uh information there.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: But for me, I started seeing symptoms like I was getting frustrated people or things that I usually wouldn't get frustrated at, or just losing energy in the middle of the day and literally having to push myself through the rest of my day, trying it with espresso and everything else, which I enjoy, but uh not really for the sake of caffeine.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Um and weekends just weren't working.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Like weekends are trying to shut down, and I I you know had a hard time shutting down and never really do.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: And people that have seen the emails from me over the weekends, they're probably aren't surprised.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Uh, but another symptom I had, which is problematic, was my to-do list kept getting longer and things were falling off my radar.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: So I was forgetting things that I shouldn't, I was forgetting things that I usually don't.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Um, and I was not getting things done and committing to things that I weren't wasn't able to deliver on.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: So um I'm I'm really I'm really uh paying attention to this.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: So I have got PTO schedule, uh cup, got some uh time coming up here for about a week that I'll be able to shut down and I'm making all the things happen around me to make sure people are informed that I'm not gonna be available.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna really try hard not to be um spending too much time on email or or returning calls and things like that.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: So, and I'll be focused on you know hanging out with good friends, with family, and just blowing off some steam.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And heck, I might even meditate.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: So I don't know what's to come, but uh I would like to encourage you to pay attention to those symptoms.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Try to dress them early on.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Don't be afraid to take your time off.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Don't be afraid to, you know, ask for help if you need it, especially if you're getting into those deeper realms uh like Joe describes.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: So uh wishing all of you guys a great week and hopefully you all are able to address this better um in the future.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Thanks to Joe.
