2:28
Speaker 3: I do want to welcome to the show now the
2:30
Speaker 3: Superintendent of Puttnham County Schools, Brismangrew. Good morning, sir, welcome
2:33
Speaker 3: to the show.
2:34
Speaker 2: Good morning Dave. Thank you for having me this morning.
2:37
Speaker 3: Thank you for being here. When does school start for
2:38
Speaker 3: students in Putnam County?
2:41
Speaker 2: Monday, the twenty fourth first day?
2:43
Speaker 3: Students report and the staff? Are they already back? Are
2:46
Speaker 3: they heading back? What's the status of the staff?
2:48
Speaker 2: Our two hundred day employees, including teachers, aids, bus drivers,
2:53
Speaker 2: they all report it today. This is their birthday back
2:57
Speaker 2: on the job.
2:58
Speaker 3: Welcome back. I hope everybody has a great school year,
3:00
Speaker 3: you included. I want to talk about the state of
3:03
Speaker 3: Putnham County schools. I had read a report over the
3:06
Speaker 3: weekend that one of your schools, and if I got
3:08
Speaker 3: the school wrong, then I apologize. I think it was
3:10
Speaker 3: West Tays Elementary was named one of the top elementary
3:14
Speaker 3: schools in the state. That's pretty good stuff, that is correct.
3:17
Speaker 2: They're doing good things there, and you know, all of
3:20
Speaker 2: our schools are doing good things, and some of the
3:23
Speaker 2: results they've had with assessments, some of the things they
3:26
Speaker 2: have in place have just given students greater opportunities. And
3:30
Speaker 2: that's what it's all about. Anytime that we can enhance
3:34
Speaker 2: a students' educational opportunity for their future, that's what we're
3:40
Speaker 2: supposed to be doing. I'm proud of West Days and
3:42
Speaker 2: the staff and the teachers, administrators what they're doing there.
3:45
Speaker 2: So it's an outstanding accolade for them.
3:49
Speaker 3: Let's talk about the other schools in Putnam County, because
3:51
Speaker 3: again there's all these reports that come out about schools
3:54
Speaker 3: that are underachieving, overachieving Putnam County depended on which report
3:58
Speaker 3: you looked at. Seems like that traditionally your schools, I
4:03
Speaker 3: don't want to say overperformed, but they perform better than
4:07
Speaker 3: what other counties do in many cases, are what are
4:09
Speaker 3: your schools doing right in Putnam County, sir, Well, first.
4:13
Speaker 2: Of all, they're putting students first. And if you put
4:17
Speaker 2: students first, you're going to have good results. We've got
4:20
Speaker 2: great people in Putnam County. We've got outstanding teachers. But
4:25
Speaker 2: you know what, we've got outstanding students. We've got families
4:29
Speaker 2: and parents who promote you know, academics wanted them to
4:34
Speaker 2: do their best and preparing them for the future. So
4:38
Speaker 2: there's a lot of things that go on in our county.
4:41
Speaker 2: We have a curriculum team that's outstanding, that provides opportunities
4:46
Speaker 2: of training and enhancement for our our principles and our teachers.
4:51
Speaker 2: And you know, we've been talking about the drip effect.
4:54
Speaker 2: We want things that we've got in place here to
4:59
Speaker 2: drip down to the principles to drip down to the teachers,
5:02
Speaker 2: to drip down to ultimately our students to where they
5:05
Speaker 2: value working hard and having a work ethic and not
5:09
Speaker 2: being satisfied. I say all the time, we're either better
5:13
Speaker 2: or worse, we're never the same, and we can't be satisfied.
5:17
Speaker 2: Complacency is a dangerous state to be in. And when
5:20
Speaker 2: you're at the top and test scores, we're blessed, we're fortunate,
5:26
Speaker 2: but we also know it's more than just test scores.
5:28
Speaker 2: It's about relationships. It's about students being prepared for the future,
5:34
Speaker 2: being able to communicate, work hard, and have that consistency
5:38
Speaker 2: on their future jobs in their careers.
5:40
Speaker 3: Talking again with Putnam County School Superintendent Bruce Magroove Dave
5:43
Speaker 3: Island show in five Adyline brought to you in part
5:45
Speaker 3: by Pinnacle Consultants, helping to identify environmental concerns as best
5:49
Speaker 3: as led mold, indoor quality issues and buildings all across
5:52
Speaker 3: the state, providing inspections, testing and accredit to lab services
5:55
Speaker 3: you can trust. Check out Pinnacle Court dot net helping
5:58
Speaker 3: you understand your environment because what you don't know can
6:00
Speaker 3: hurt you. I talked to your counterpart here in Canawa
6:03
Speaker 3: County Schools, doctor PAULA Potter, on Friday, and I know
6:07
Speaker 3: on midday we actually talked to a superintendent from the
6:10
Speaker 3: Eastern Panhandle, and there seems to be that there's this
6:13
Speaker 3: movement in a lot of classrooms in West Virginia to
6:16
Speaker 3: back away a little bit from technology. Certainly not Bruce
6:21
Speaker 3: doing away with it altogether by any stretch of the imagination,
6:24
Speaker 3: but maybe putting a little less less emphasis on technology
6:28
Speaker 3: and getting back to more old school teaching in the classrooms.
6:33
Speaker 3: Puttnam County taking that approach as well.
6:36
Speaker 2: We are starting to do that, especially at the elementary age.
6:39
Speaker 2: You know, technology is a great thing, but we become
6:43
Speaker 2: as human beings, we become so relac upon it that
6:48
Speaker 2: when it's not working, when the software is not responding
6:55
Speaker 2: the way it's supposed to, there's so many problems you
6:57
Speaker 2: run into. But it's also about with students, and it's
7:02
Speaker 2: the same for adults. You get tied into that device
7:05
Speaker 2: and it's so easy to get up, get caught up
7:10
Speaker 2: in it to where you're on that device all the time.
7:13
Speaker 2: It's not healthy. I'm a former health teacher. It's not healthy.
7:16
Speaker 2: They need to be hands on more, They need to
7:19
Speaker 2: be active learning and not just staring at an iPad
7:23
Speaker 2: or a computer screen. So there is that push, there
7:27
Speaker 2: is a change. It's coming about. Doesn't mean technology is
7:30
Speaker 2: going out the door. By no means it's too valuable,
7:34
Speaker 2: but to lessen the amount of time that's spent on
7:37
Speaker 2: it is going to be beneficial. There's no doubt because
7:42
Speaker 2: again we've got a society that relies on a computer screen.
7:47
Speaker 2: We need to be able to look people in the eyes,
7:49
Speaker 2: be able to work together collaboratively and solve things and learn. So, yes,
7:54
Speaker 2: that is going to happen.
7:56
Speaker 3: Talking again with Brisceburergres, Superintendent of Pudam County Schools, I
8:00
Speaker 3: know a lot of the discussion has been about that
8:02
Speaker 3: Google Data center Bruce and Putnam County, but I will
8:05
Speaker 3: say that we won't get into that debate, but I
8:06
Speaker 3: will say that the folks of Google came through it
8:08
Speaker 3: a big way for some school systems in your county.
8:11
Speaker 2: Yes they have. I mean, if they're going to come
8:14
Speaker 2: to Putnam County and see the value of public education
8:17
Speaker 2: in West Virginia and public education in Putnam County, it's
8:22
Speaker 2: the maximum that you can be. It's outstanding. What are
8:26
Speaker 2: public education West Virginia and specifically Putnam County offers. And
8:31
Speaker 2: you know, they're in a business. They realize too that
8:35
Speaker 2: we can help them because that they can attach to us,
8:39
Speaker 2: it only builds their products. So we're grateful for their
8:43
Speaker 2: contributions to some schools in the Buffalo area. You know,
8:48
Speaker 2: coming into the county. But you know they do realize
8:52
Speaker 2: that to attach themselves to West Virginia Public Schools is
8:56
Speaker 2: a big mark for your company. So that's the way
8:59
Speaker 2: it works. And you know we'll work with them and
9:01
Speaker 2: what they offer to benefit our students. And it's a good.
9:04
Speaker 3: Thing you mentioned earlier about your education. I mean your experience,
9:09
Speaker 3: I should say, as an educator, health teacher, and you've
9:11
Speaker 3: been principals, superintendent, done all the things in the school.
9:14
Speaker 3: If you could give parents, superintendent, any advice for the
9:18
Speaker 3: upcoming school year for parents, what would that be?
9:22
Speaker 2: Well, keep your priorities in line. You know, you got
9:25
Speaker 2: to follow the Good Lord first of all, or all
9:28
Speaker 2: the other plans are going to fall apart. But to communicate,
9:31
Speaker 2: to have relationships, to know what's going on at their
9:36
Speaker 2: students school. You know, have those sit down conversations talk
9:39
Speaker 2: about today. It's nothing sophisticated, it's not rocket science. It's
9:43
Speaker 2: returning to values morals that our society needs. And students
9:47
Speaker 2: want to communicate, They want to talk about their day
9:50
Speaker 2: and I think you'd be surprised to find out when
9:53
Speaker 2: you sit down and spend time with them how beneficial
9:56
Speaker 2: that can be. On a student's everyday life in our
9:58
Speaker 2: school system very beneficial for communication, staying involved. There's so
10:04
Speaker 2: many opportunities in our school system for not just parents,
10:09
Speaker 2: but the community to be involved in. We've got an
10:12
Speaker 2: outstanding thing going on here that the bottom line is
10:17
Speaker 2: we get students prepared, But the major thing I would
10:22
Speaker 2: say is communicate and be involved. You can't stress that enough.
10:27
Speaker 3: Budham County School Superintendent Bruce McGrew, Sir, have a great
10:29
Speaker 3: school year. Thank you for joining us and we'll talk
10:31

14:44
Speaker 3: Danny Jones coming up. Do you want to bring in
14:46
Speaker 3: Metro News media rollogist Brian Hughes. It's been a busy
14:49
Speaker 3: uh twenty four forty eight hour actually seventy two, let's
14:53
Speaker 3: say three weeks exactly.
14:54
Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, and if you if you really go back,
14:58
Speaker 9: it was let's see here tomorrow. Yeah, tomorrow is when
15:02
Speaker 9: we started talking about the flooding potential a month ago.
15:05
Speaker 9: So you know, you're looking at twenty eight almost thirty
15:08
Speaker 9: days where we've had just non stop rain across the
15:12
Speaker 9: state of West Virginia and beyond.
15:14
Speaker 3: And it's and that's what especially, it seems like it's
15:18
Speaker 3: been here over the last I mean, you said for
15:21
Speaker 3: a long time, but I mean even this weekend. I
15:24
Speaker 3: mean it's just non stop, and it's and we got
15:26
Speaker 3: another event coming. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
15:29
Speaker 9: Listen, I was looking at my numbers that my Facebook
15:32
Speaker 9: page alone had over two million, two point three million
15:35
Speaker 9: views in the last two days, and that's absurd. But
15:39
Speaker 9: people are clamoring for more information, when's the next round
15:42
Speaker 9: of rain coming, when's the next storm coming? And you know,
15:45
Speaker 9: thankfully we had the showers and storms that were in
15:47
Speaker 9: eastern Kentucky that got to the border and just started
15:49
Speaker 9: falling apart. Okay, from eight am till ten am across
15:53
Speaker 9: the country as you're in those different time zones, that
15:55
Speaker 9: is the most stable part of the day in the atmosphere,
15:58
Speaker 9: eight to ten am. Not he peaks around nine o'clock.
16:01
Speaker 9: And if storms can last through that, it's going to
16:04
Speaker 9: be a bad day.
16:05
Speaker 10: Okay.
16:06
Speaker 9: But we literally had at eight o'clock, those storms started
16:09
Speaker 9: to fall apart as they were getting the right there
16:11
Speaker 9: to the Kentucky border, and they've fallen apart to where
16:13
Speaker 9: now there's just a few sprinkles in the neighborhood in Putnam,
16:16
Speaker 9: moving into Kenwak County, parts of Lincoln County. But by
16:19
Speaker 9: this afternoon we are going to see showers and storms
16:22
Speaker 9: tramping back up into the early evening and nighttime hours.
16:25
Speaker 9: And we've got one hundred percent chance of rain today
16:28
Speaker 9: because of the showers and storms later on this afternoon
16:30
Speaker 9: of this evening, some of those will be strong and
16:31
Speaker 9: severe gusty wins will be the primary threat. But I
16:34
Speaker 9: say the primary threat, it's probably a secondary threat when
16:36
Speaker 9: you consider the rain, because flooding is the primary threat
16:40
Speaker 9: now across the entire state. When you had yesterday yesterday
16:44
Speaker 9: in Fayette County, you had in parts of the county
16:46
Speaker 9: over a foot of rain, and the majority that fell
16:51
Speaker 9: within twelve hours, but we had a foot of rain
16:54
Speaker 9: over a twenty five hour period. That just blows through
16:56
Speaker 9: every record possible, and it really makes August the wettest
17:00
Speaker 9: August we've already seen. I think it's I think right
17:02
Speaker 9: now we're at number two, but we are going to
17:04
Speaker 9: be number one after today, we will be and then
17:06
Speaker 9: when you add the rain for the rest of the
17:07
Speaker 9: mine and we're just gonna blow through all these records.
17:09
Speaker 9: But the creeks and streams still running. They're not running
17:14
Speaker 9: obviously like what they were yesterday last night. But you know,
17:18
Speaker 9: we've got the big river Kenaal River. It's it's at
17:22
Speaker 9: sixteen and a half feet and it's steady and it's
17:24
Speaker 9: going to slowly drop over the next couple of days.
17:26
Speaker 3: How are things are your place? Because you know, Brian
17:28
Speaker 3: lives on the river rich you know, yeah, well he's
17:31
Speaker 3: like I Cantina, he's rolling on.
17:33
Speaker 9: The river right right exactly, rolling, rolling, rolling down the river.
17:37
Speaker 9: I think we am not rolling down the river, but
17:39
Speaker 9: I'm rolling on the river. You know. Last night I
17:41
Speaker 9: was like I heard a big bang, and every time
17:43
Speaker 9: you hear a big bang, you go crap, what's that?
17:46
Speaker 1: You know?
17:47
Speaker 9: And I was like, I think something hit the boat.
17:49
Speaker 9: And I went out there and there's a refrigerator up
17:51
Speaker 9: against the front of the boat.
17:53
Speaker 3: So yeah, you know, just when did Big Sandy start
17:56
Speaker 3: doing it that way?
17:57
Speaker 2: Right?
17:57
Speaker 10: Well, listen, if they're going to do ever it.
17:58
Speaker 3: They're gonna deliver via the water.
18:00
Speaker 9: Ryan, you ain't enough new fra age, That's right, I
18:02
Speaker 9: do well, Big Sandy Superstore can help you out here.
18:05
Speaker 9: But no, but that you know, had a refnger hit
18:08
Speaker 9: the boat, and it's actually it's rare for that to happen.
18:11
Speaker 9: But the water was churning so much yesterday because I'm
18:14
Speaker 9: in a part of the river where there's a bend,
18:16
Speaker 9: so I don't get a lot of that, but I sure.
18:17
Speaker 3: Got the debris yesterday.
18:19
Speaker 1: So it's a mess.
18:20
Speaker 3: But so what do we have for the rest of
18:21
Speaker 3: the day.
18:22
Speaker 9: Rest of the day, there could be a shower any
18:24
Speaker 9: point during the day, kind of like these couple of
18:25
Speaker 9: these springs.
18:26
Speaker 3: But it's kind of be like it was yesterday. From
18:27
Speaker 3: what I've been.
18:28
Speaker 9: Told, it is not. But we do have more showers
18:30
Speaker 9: of storm this afternoonto this evening again. Primary threats flooding.
18:33
Speaker 9: Secondary threat is going to be win and obviously the lightning,
18:37
Speaker 9: Holy smack of Rooney's. I mean, we've got so many
18:40
Speaker 9: people without power, but a lot of that is because
18:42
Speaker 9: the trees that have come down into the power lines
18:44
Speaker 9: and such.
18:45
Speaker 3: I saw our good friends up with the animal shelter
18:47
Speaker 3: had some trees on their building. A matter of fact,
18:49
Speaker 3: I wan't read you this text. It says to ask
18:51
Speaker 3: me if Dave, did you happen to see the Facebook
18:53
Speaker 3: post of a young hero who rescued two drowning pigs
18:56
Speaker 3: from floodwaters in Mount Carbon. Seems that CBS News saw it.
18:59
Speaker 3: Lets this young man and people please don't leave animals behind.
19:02
Speaker 3: I have not seen that, but they sent me the
19:04
Speaker 3: article on go check out.
19:05
Speaker 9: Yeah, listen, there a lot of people who are doing
19:07
Speaker 9: a lot of good things yesterday. You know, every single
19:10
Speaker 9: boat that Charleston Fire Department had yesterday, those right doing
19:13
Speaker 9: the swift water rescues. And not just Charleston, we had
19:16
Speaker 9: tons of volunteer fire departments of the fire departments that
19:19
Speaker 9: were out and about doing the Lord's work yesterday taking
19:22
Speaker 9: care of people. But as the new forecast models have
19:25
Speaker 9: just come in and we're looking at you know, by
19:28
Speaker 9: the time we get to noon, we start see things
19:31
Speaker 9: bubbling back up. And two three o'clock this afternoon, all
19:34
Speaker 9: the way through about five o'clock, some good showers of
19:36
Speaker 9: thunderstorms passing by. It's another round probably nine to mid nine.
19:40
Speaker 9: And then after that just a couple of spotty sprinkles,
19:43
Speaker 9: and then for your day tomorrow maybe a twenty percent
19:45
Speaker 9: chance for a sprinkle, and then going into Wednesday high
19:48
Speaker 9: and dry. Next chance of rain after that will be Thursday.
19:50
Speaker 9: But it's afternoon, this evening and tonight. This is our
19:53
Speaker 9: last good round until we probably see Thursday.
19:55
Speaker 3: All right. Of course, you can follow Metro News Media
19:57
Speaker 3: rollers is Brian Hughes and social media by downloading the
19:59
Speaker 3: Metro News Telling Vision app and give me hearing from
20:01
Speaker 3: him a lot throughout the day today. So I appreciate
20:04
Speaker 3: you being here, man, Thanks so long. Absolutely all right.
20:07
Speaker 3: I want to bring in our good buddy Rich the realtor,
20:10
Speaker 3: and I'm sure that you have seen is he's serving
20:12
Speaker 3: his rich client today. Not so much ridge toil, although
20:15
Speaker 3: I may give him a chance to plug something. So
20:18
Speaker 3: the USS Lincoln now deployed for over two hundred fifty days,
20:21
Speaker 3: originally supposed to be a seven month deployment. We heard
20:24
Speaker 3: reports of terrible conditions on the ship, food shortages, mental
20:27
Speaker 3: health issues, et cetera, et cetera. Rich joins me today
20:32
Speaker 3: because he spent a little time on those ships, right
20:35
Speaker 3: well a ship. Yes, I served three and a half
20:38
Speaker 3: years on the USS nimts. So NIMENS class did two
20:42
Speaker 3: Mediterranean deployments. You know, the thing that I think about
20:46
Speaker 3: is that the mental health part is real. We did
20:51
Speaker 3: fifty day and well it may have been the Nimets,
20:53
Speaker 3: may have been the Department Defense at the time, but
20:55
Speaker 3: anytime you served more than fifty days, the Navy does
20:58
Speaker 3: their best to try and they know that the stress
21:00
Speaker 3: is there. So they would throw a still still deck
21:03
Speaker 3: picnic for us. So they would secure the flight the
21:06
Speaker 3: secure all of the aircraft and then take everybody out
21:09
Speaker 3: of the flight deck, new cookouts. There's football and frisbee
21:12
Speaker 3: and skeet shooting off the back and like they're doing
21:14
Speaker 3: what they can to relieve that mental stress. So how
21:18
Speaker 3: in your opinion? I don't I'm not going to ask
21:20
Speaker 3: you to get too political because you're a businessman, right
21:22
Speaker 3: and that's not always good, you know, But how does
21:24
Speaker 3: this happen? I mean that that they're out there for
21:27
Speaker 3: that was what was supposed to be. You know, one
21:29
Speaker 3: time it got you know, got stretched out to what
21:33
Speaker 3: it is now. I mean, is this common?
21:35
Speaker 11: Well, so here's what I'll say is that I think
21:38
Speaker 11: and this is what prompted you to call me last night,
21:40
Speaker 11: because of what I shared on my Facebook page about
21:43
Speaker 11: you know, there's people that don't know what they're talking about,
21:45
Speaker 11: need to be careful about spreading this kind of stuff.
21:47
Speaker 11: I'm not sure either. It's been many, many years since
21:50
Speaker 11: I've been involved or serving on that ship, so you know,
21:55
Speaker 11: there are supply underway replenishments that happened regularly on those deployments.
22:00
Speaker 11: Maybe those unaway replenishments are backlogged, Maybe there's trouble getting
22:05
Speaker 11: you know, all of the supplies onto those ships that
22:07
Speaker 11: bring them to the aircraft carrier and resupply their fresh food,
22:10
Speaker 11: and you know that kind of thing. But we're we
22:12
Speaker 11: never I mean, and we were at sea for a
22:14
Speaker 11: long time, but we never struggled with that kind of stuff. No,
22:17
Speaker 11: we didn't have social media to complain about it, and
22:20
Speaker 11: you know, call home and talk to our parents, and
22:22
Speaker 11: there were no safe spaces and you know that kind
22:24
Speaker 11: of thing. What I'll say, when we did get strained,
22:26
Speaker 11: and there were definitely some skirmishes during my deployments that
22:30
Speaker 11: made us a little bit stressed, you know, but I
22:32
Speaker 11: can tell you that the sailors on board the Nimets,
22:36
Speaker 11: they would all buckle down and just get the job done.
22:38
Speaker 11: During those skirmishes, there was no question about what was
22:40
Speaker 11: happening there. We trained for that kind of stuff, you know.
22:45
Speaker 11: And again I want to emphasize that I recognized the
22:47
Speaker 11: mental health is real and they need that break and
22:50
Speaker 11: be at sea. The problem that I see this, the
22:52
Speaker 11: biggest problem, is that they've been at sea consecutive more
22:55
Speaker 11: than two hundred days. I mean, that's amazing and that's
22:58
Speaker 11: going to stress anybody out.
22:59
Speaker 3: What does it do. I know you're not a psychologist,
23:01
Speaker 3: you're a realtor, but but what does it do to
23:03
Speaker 3: the mind?
23:04
Speaker 1: You know?
23:05
Speaker 11: I just I think it brings on the It enhances
23:08
Speaker 11: all of those feelings of loneliness and depression can sneak
23:11
Speaker 11: sneak in, and you want to go home. Some of
23:13
Speaker 11: those sailors, men and women whatever having children at home
23:17
Speaker 11: that they haven't met, and their parents might be sick
23:20
Speaker 11: and like trying to get back to them. But they
23:22
Speaker 11: have no control over where that aircraft carrier is going
23:25
Speaker 11: to go. Now I understand that the USS George Washington
23:29
Speaker 11: is en route. They've they've diverted that to go and
23:32
Speaker 11: relieve them from that deployment, you know, which is a
23:35
Speaker 11: good thing. But who knows why those things are happening
23:39
Speaker 11: unless you're in the room. That's why I'm careful about
23:41
Speaker 11: talking with you know, radio pundits and these I know,
23:47
Speaker 11: the politicians and all that that say they bring experts. Yeah,
23:50
Speaker 11: I'm not an I'm not an expert either. I lived
23:52
Speaker 11: in those conditions. But yes, I lived in those conditions
23:55
Speaker 11: and was never I mean I was. I was just
23:57
Speaker 11: one of the worker bees there. You know, ever in
23:59
Speaker 11: a leadership position, and I think even the you know,
24:02
Speaker 11: the department heads and the captain of the ship, they're
24:05
Speaker 11: only doing what's best for that ship and what they're
24:09
Speaker 11: being told to what's best for our country.
24:11
Speaker 3: But I mean, you know the reason I reached out
24:13
Speaker 3: to you again. I saw your post on social media
24:15
Speaker 3: that you did about people getting and talking about things
24:17
Speaker 3: that they don't know anything about expound upon.
24:20
Speaker 11: Yeah, well exactly what I've been saying is like, you
24:23
Speaker 11: don't know, you haven't been there. You know, some of
24:26
Speaker 11: these reports as you know, the news, I'm not talking
24:29
Speaker 11: about the you as the media, but they like to
24:33
Speaker 11: expand on this kind of thing and make it dramatic
24:34
Speaker 11: to get the clicks real and sure, and you know,
24:38
Speaker 11: nobody nobody there on that ship. There could be people
24:41
Speaker 11: there that are I'm sure there are people there that
24:43
Speaker 11: are stressed and they're talking to their you know, their
24:45
Speaker 11: folks back home or loved ones back home and they
24:48
Speaker 11: had to tuna fish sandwiches again or something like that.
24:51
Speaker 11: But we that would have never phased us, you know.
24:54
Speaker 11: And is it bad or is it not as pleasant
24:57
Speaker 11: as it could be where they're fixing a Thanksgiving meal
25:00
Speaker 11: for you or something. Listen, my best friend and from
25:03
Speaker 11: the Navy is Craig Breman, New Orleans, and here and
25:05
Speaker 11: I share a store every year that on Thanksgiving we
25:08
Speaker 11: couldn't get to the mess dex for any kind of uh,
25:11
Speaker 11: to get any kind of a meal, and we shared
25:14
Speaker 11: barbecued Vienna sausages and risk crackers.
25:17
Speaker 3: So we just like the Pilgrims did that.
25:19
Speaker 11: That's but you know what, and then General Quarters is
25:21
Speaker 11: called and we go do our thing, and uh, you
25:24
Speaker 11: know it's it's an important job and I think, you know, well,
25:27
Speaker 11: let's stress you out. Sure, you know, that's why the
25:30
Speaker 11: port calls are important for to get them to re
25:32
Speaker 11: relieve some stress and distract them from their job and
25:34
Speaker 11: that kind of thing.
25:35
Speaker 3: Talking to Rich Climb to Dave Island Show on five,
25:37
Speaker 3: Adieline Brown to you parted by the all new generations
25:39
Speaker 3: for the hurricane visit generations for dot Com. You'll never
25:44
Speaker 3: hear me say anything negative about anybody in the military.
25:47
Speaker 3: That's not That's not what I do. I mean, those folks,
25:49
Speaker 3: those men and women are serving more more than I did.
25:53
Speaker 3: You serve more than I did. Danny, who wanna talk
25:55
Speaker 3: to you next? You know hour was in Vietnam the
25:58
Speaker 3: utmost respect. But do you think there's a difference though,
26:01
Speaker 3: in in the mentality of people serving today as it
26:06
Speaker 3: was in the nineteen eighties when you were serving, well one.
26:09
Speaker 11: Hundred percent, that's true. You know, technology has changed things.
26:13
Speaker 11: When I served on board the limits there were, as
26:16
Speaker 11: I understand there where I as remember, there was about
26:18
Speaker 11: six thousand sailors demand that you know when we're fully deployed,
26:22
Speaker 11: and now they're five thousand. So technology has certainly increased
26:26
Speaker 11: and you know, reduced levels of productivity those kind of things,
26:30
Speaker 11: which is a helpful thing that it's also encouraged the
26:34
Speaker 11: social behaviors that we all know between the generations, and
26:37
Speaker 11: you know, you think about whether or not today's day,
26:41
Speaker 11: I mean, these guys are in a war. They literally
26:43
Speaker 11: are in a war. This is new for everybody. What
26:46
Speaker 11: a generation of you know, people like Danny handled that better.
26:51
Speaker 11: I would say they probably would have just because of
26:53
Speaker 11: the generational the way they were raised.
26:55
Speaker 12: You know.
26:56
Speaker 11: I recently lost my dad veteran and there we talked
26:59
Speaker 11: about this a lot at the memorial services. That they
27:01
Speaker 11: don't make them like that anymore, you know. So and
27:03
Speaker 11: each generation gets a little bit, you know, just different,
27:07
Speaker 11: and it's different. Trying to be careful, but it is different.
27:10
Speaker 11: And again, there were no safe spaces and things like
27:12
Speaker 11: that on board. When I was on board, we didn't
27:14
Speaker 11: do that kind of thing. We relied on each other,
27:16
Speaker 11: you know, and we just bonded with each other and
27:19
Speaker 11: got each other through that.
27:21
Speaker 3: I got you, well. I appreciate you giving us your perspective.
27:24
Speaker 3: And because you were nice enough to drive in here
27:26
Speaker 3: from your office in Tay's Valley to be our you know,

28:34
Speaker 11: Oh yeah, just that I remember Bruce McGrew taught me
28:37
Speaker 11: how to drive the car and drivers at at Wentfield
28:39
Speaker 11: High School. Okay, just a few years ago. Actually we're
28:42
Speaker 11: both still very young.
28:43
Speaker 3: Yes, say did you have to crank the model t
28:46
Speaker 3: or it was?
28:47
Speaker 10: He had?
28:47
Speaker 11: He had to get in the back and to push it,
28:49
Speaker 11: and I dropped clutch and get.
28:50
Speaker 3: The still he was in the rumble seats. Then we
28:51

28:54

32:01
Speaker 3: you're pushing fake news about the navy. We all know
32:04
Speaker 3: sailors are getting fed fresh vegetables, filet mignon, crab legs,
32:07
Speaker 3: all the soft drinks they want. And we also know
32:09

32:15

32:44

33:27
Speaker 10: Holy smack a doodle?
33:30
Speaker 3: Do you hear Hughes say that? It's like, I don't
33:33
Speaker 3: know exactly what that means?
33:34
Speaker 10: Rights a listener, Brian talk all day.
33:37
Speaker 3: It's official meteorological term.
33:39
Speaker 10: Holy talking about we're afraid your roudier hitting the boat. Yeah,
33:46
Speaker 10: that's a new way that the company levering them.
33:50
Speaker 3: And well now I said that line.
33:51
Speaker 10: Oh you did that. I'm good.
33:53
Speaker 3: I'm the funny guy, all right. Uh so you heard
33:56
Speaker 3: some of the conversations that I was having with my
33:58
Speaker 3: good buddy Rich. The realre there. And I want to
34:01
Speaker 3: ask you something as somebody who you both of you
34:04
Speaker 3: guys served big and look, I have said this, I
34:07
Speaker 3: don't care whether you served during wartime, peace time or whatever.
34:09
Speaker 3: You still served, Yeah, whether and I did not, So
34:12
Speaker 3: big props to you, and big props to Rich and
34:14
Speaker 3: my late father and so many others that did. Do
34:17
Speaker 3: you think there's a difference though, in the types of
34:21
Speaker 3: people that are serving now. And I'm not disparaged in
34:22
Speaker 3: the military. Boy, any stretch of the imagination. I would
34:25
Speaker 3: never do that. But you just think that there's a
34:27
Speaker 3: difference between the type of people that serve today and
34:29
Speaker 3: what served let's say, during your generation and going back,
34:32
Speaker 3: because I mean, society itself has changed. So I mean
34:35
Speaker 3: it would, I guess it would. I'm answering my one question.
34:37
Speaker 3: I guess I guess that there would be a difference
34:40
Speaker 3: in the type people that Well, we.
34:42
Speaker 10: Had two million people in the Fleet Armed Forces. Now
34:49
Speaker 10: you've got what eight or nine hundred thousand, and they're
34:55
Speaker 10: paid more. They're there because they wanted to be there. Remember,
34:59
Speaker 10: I was try but I made the best out of it,
35:05
Speaker 10: made the most out of it, got lucky. I'll tell you.
35:10
Speaker 10: If I had my way, I'd have gone to Vietnam
35:13
Speaker 10: earlier and stayed there later.
35:15
Speaker 3: And why is that?
35:16
Speaker 10: Because it it was casual. It was I was in
35:27
Speaker 10: the name they called that Rocket City. We were hit
35:31
Speaker 10: by rockets a lot, but there's a lot of time
35:35
Speaker 10: we weren't hit by rockets, and it was very casual,
35:40
Speaker 10: and it was very what you call salty. I mean,
35:44
Speaker 10: we developed some pretty salty attitudes. Yeah, I mean we
35:48
Speaker 10: raised a lot of sand. When cigarettes went from fifteen
35:52
Speaker 10: to seventeenth center. Back really, we had a what's called
35:57
Speaker 10: on January twenty eighth, and I found a schedule somewhere
36:01
Speaker 10: on the internet. We had what's called a boxing smoker
36:06
Speaker 10: where they set up a ring right right where I
36:10
Speaker 10: pulled my truck in to turn it around to pick
36:13
Speaker 10: up troop to take them back and forth to the
36:15
Speaker 10: flight line. And these guys could box and you could
36:20
Speaker 10: have a beer if you wanted one. So I think
36:26
Speaker 10: I drank two beers while I was in Vietnam, and
36:29
Speaker 10: they were that night, and they were Schafers beer and
36:35
Speaker 10: you had to have a church key to open them. Yes,
36:39
Speaker 10: they didn't have a pop up. I mean they may
36:42
Speaker 10: have come from World War two. You know, you never know.
36:45
Speaker 3: They didn't know about born on datings.
36:46
Speaker 10: Back then. We had. The worst part about nom for
36:51
Speaker 10: me was the mosquitoes. And you would it's a good
36:58
Speaker 10: way to get malaria.
37:00
Speaker 3: My dad talked about that too.
37:01
Speaker 10: So you would put it all over your arms and
37:04
Speaker 10: all your exposed parts, especially at night, and those mosquitoes
37:10
Speaker 10: would go towards your arms and boot they'd come right
37:13
Speaker 10: back up. And that mosquito repellent came from World War two.
37:18
Speaker 10: It was army issue, but it was it was what
37:27
Speaker 10: you call gungee. And I wasn't in the bush. I
37:30
Speaker 10: wasn't crawling around, and I wasn't on Hamburger Hill, you know. So,
37:36
Speaker 10: But I mean I like them. I mean it scared
37:42
Speaker 10: me when and we we took one convoy up the
37:47
Speaker 10: case on and that got pretty weird. But otherwise you've
37:53
Speaker 10: got to remember that most of the time you weren't
37:55
Speaker 10: getting rocketed. It was a normal ex distance.
38:00
Speaker 3: Yeah, my dad, my dad talked about that too. And uh,
38:03
Speaker 3: he was always in the clerical into things, and that's
38:06
Speaker 3: what he did outside the service. He was a purchasing
38:09
Speaker 3: agent for a cold company. He bought all the stuff
38:12
Speaker 3: on the equipment whatever, and that's kind of similar. He
38:15
Speaker 3: was in charge of, you know, inventory and things of
38:18
Speaker 3: that nature. And he said a lot of days it
38:20
Speaker 3: was a nine to five job, and just it was
38:22
Speaker 3: just like I was in the States. But in other
38:24
Speaker 3: days your officer get blown up. So well, it wasn't
38:26
Speaker 3: like a nine to five job, and.
38:27
Speaker 10: That what in them. It was never nine to five.
38:30
Speaker 10: It was ten to twelve hours every day, but it was.
38:39
Speaker 10: Do you remember in Mash, the movie Mash, when they
38:43
Speaker 10: backed that truck up and all the troops were in
38:47
Speaker 10: back and there that canvas top. And remember that's what
38:51
Speaker 10: I drove, Yeah, in Vietnam, right, that's what I drove.
38:55
Speaker 3: And let me read a text here. Notice the difference
38:58
Speaker 3: in the generations to the texture. You ever hear stories
39:00
Speaker 3: of the heroes who stormed the beaches at Normandy is
39:02
Speaker 3: saying they felt a little anxious about what they were
39:05
Speaker 3: about to do and needed safe spaces.
39:08
Speaker 10: I don't, well there.
39:10
Speaker 3: What I think what the texture is trying to say
39:12
Speaker 3: is is that Rich talked about how and again I'm
39:15
Speaker 3: not disparaging their military, but in it stretch of the
39:17
Speaker 3: imagination looked to please understand that, but that that that
39:20
Speaker 3: that things have changed a lot. And and this texture
39:22
Speaker 3: is saying that you would have never heard the complaints
39:25
Speaker 3: that you're hearing on this ship spoken by people that
39:29
Speaker 3: were storming the beaches at Normandy.
39:31
Speaker 10: I would have done they would have kept it.
39:33
Speaker 3: Within probably and then you know, go ahead, glad.
39:35
Speaker 10: I would have done absolutely anything they told me to do, anything,
39:40
Speaker 10: because I knew it was going to end. And if
39:43
Speaker 10: some if something happened bad to me, I'd have never
39:46
Speaker 10: known it. That's why I looked at it when I
39:49
Speaker 10: was in numb, but it was it was casual. The
39:55
Speaker 10: attitude was salty. It was almost like being in Greenwich Village.
40:00
Speaker 10: I mean it was just uh and there you pick
40:03
Speaker 10: up a lingo, you know.
40:05
Speaker 3: Yeah, well, just like with anything else.
40:06
Speaker 10: Yeah. You remember in Donnie Brasco when they said forget
40:10
Speaker 10: about it. I remember that.
40:12
Speaker 3: Yeah, Okay, we said, there it is that that was
40:15
Speaker 3: your lingo. H.
40:16
Speaker 10: There it is. Whether you agreed with him, there it is.
40:20
Speaker 10: There it is.
40:20
Speaker 3: That's an exclamation point on everything we're talking to. Danny Jones,
40:23
Speaker 3: a Dave Allen Show in five of Eline Brown two
40:25
Speaker 3: part by Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury law firm, Texas,
40:28
Speaker 3: please be careful with the then versus now comparison of
40:32
Speaker 3: life experiences. I remember when Vietnam soldiers were roundly criticized
40:36
Speaker 3: for calling attention to the medical side effects of agent orange.
40:39
Speaker 3: That's true. Something to be said for that that.
40:42
Speaker 10: You know, you saw that big chart I had of
40:46
Speaker 10: all those chemicals. I don't know. I had a graph
40:50
Speaker 10: in here one day. Maybe you all had it. I
40:52
Speaker 10: don't know. It was a picture of all these different
40:54
Speaker 10: chemicals that were in Vietnam. It may not have been
40:58
Speaker 10: agent orange may have been another chemical. I mean, and
41:03
Speaker 10: they were doing stuff. They were experimenting on us. They
41:05
Speaker 10: were giving us pills and we were urinating different colors.
41:10
Speaker 10: I mean, we were. It was It was weird. But
41:14
Speaker 10: there were a lot of chemicals in Vietnam, and I
41:18
Speaker 10: would certainly have been exposed to them because of the
41:20
Speaker 10: flight line, because of the five hangars that were on
41:24
Speaker 10: the flight line, and you know the Sea one thirties
41:28
Speaker 10: and all the planes, and back then they weren't they
41:32
Speaker 10: were pretty primitive. Well.
41:34
Speaker 3: Experimenting on troops though, is not something new that even
41:37
Speaker 3: started at Vietnam. And I want to look up the
41:39
Speaker 3: Tuskegee Airman if you want more information about that than yeah,
41:42
Speaker 3: some of the other things.
41:43
Speaker 10: I met. One of those guys, his name was Daniel
41:46
Speaker 10: Chaffie and he was a He was a spokesman for
41:51
Speaker 10: the Richard Nixon Melvin Laird Defense Department, and he was
41:58
Speaker 10: an Air Force general and I loved him.
42:02
Speaker 3: Texts Every Monday Show should be a segment with Danny
42:05
Speaker 3: Jones and a segment with Tony Hodge. They always have
42:07
Speaker 3: interesting take something.
42:09
Speaker 10: I'll take that any day. I'd like to listen to
42:11
Speaker 10: Tony all right, We'll put two of.
42:12
Speaker 3: Y'a on together and I'll go out for breakfast and
42:15
Speaker 3: you two just talk.
42:16
Speaker 10: No, we're not going to do that.
42:17
Speaker 3: Text says, I really think they should bring back the draft.
42:20
Speaker 3: Take a look at the difference in the men that
42:23
Speaker 3: became once they discharged and how they interacted with society,
42:26
Speaker 3: compared to this generation that we have now, who thinks
42:28
Speaker 3: the world owes them something that they had the right
42:30
Speaker 3: to act out the way they do with no consequence.
42:32
Speaker 3: So do you think that you bring back the draft.
42:35
Speaker 10: I think people should serve. I mean I remember when
42:39
Speaker 10: they did away with the draft. That was Nixon, right,
42:42
Speaker 10: who did that right? And I thought it was a mistake.
42:48
Speaker 3: In a lot of countries, though, you have to do
42:50
Speaker 3: some sort of service. I know people that I knew
42:53
Speaker 3: in college, and people we had for an exchanine, students
42:56
Speaker 3: at my school, whatever. Everybody at one point had to
43:00
Speaker 3: had to serve something they didn't do in the military.
43:02
Speaker 3: They had to go into almost like a peace corps
43:05
Speaker 3: kind of tight. I mean, I didn't do that, but
43:10
Speaker 3: I don't think it's a bad idea.
43:11
Speaker 10: Well now people don't even consider it now. My son Jared,
43:17
Speaker 10: he's army I really believe he's going to make a
43:22
Speaker 10: career out of it.
43:23
Speaker 3: Really.
43:23
Speaker 10: Yeah, that took That's fine with me. I wish i'd
43:26
Speaker 10: live to see it all.
43:28
Speaker 3: Now, if you make a career out of it. I
43:29
Speaker 3: know every situation is different, but what's the ad I
43:32
Speaker 3: could google us what's the average like retire? When could
43:35
Speaker 3: he retire?
43:36
Speaker 10: Twenty years and twenty years? He could retire okay, yeah,
43:39
Speaker 10: and then he when he gets out of am I
43:43
Speaker 10: at twenty one or twenty two years old. He could
43:48
Speaker 10: retire at forty two, or he could retire at fifty two.
43:51
Speaker 10: And now they'll let these high ranked officers stay longer.
43:58
Speaker 10: You know, they'll stay longer, but I don't know. I
44:07
Speaker 10: I'm very proud of that. When he went to Bible Center,
44:11
Speaker 10: there was a Bible Center Junior High middle school. There
44:17
Speaker 10: was a retired Marine Corps lieutenant colonel up there who
44:21
Speaker 10: I think influenced him. And I just saw this guy
44:25
Speaker 10: on last week when I got a blood test. We
44:28
Speaker 10: were both at the VA at the same time. And
44:32
Speaker 10: I'll never I mean, I think he influenced here. It
44:36
Speaker 10: in such a way that Jared, I'm going in the military.
44:40
Speaker 10: Jarrett like the Army he was in an army R
44:43
Speaker 10: O T C. So it's okay with.
44:46
Speaker 3: Me, Texas, thank you for your service. How do you
44:50
Speaker 3: answer that when people come up? Because my veteran friends
44:54
Speaker 3: and my dad, you know, answered it differently.
44:57
Speaker 10: Can I get on the airplane early?

Speaker 3: think forced service is a great idea as long as
46:47
Speaker 3: politicians children are the first to be forced to sign up.
46:52
Speaker 10: Well, I mean it was it was good for me.
46:56
Speaker 3: I think it just goes to everybody, whether your politicians
46:58
Speaker 3: get or not.
46:58
Speaker 10: I mean, but what happened and was most of the
47:00
Speaker 10: guys I got out of high school with they went
47:03
Speaker 10: to college, and then by the time they went to college,
47:08
Speaker 10: the lottery kicked in, so that kicked the law and
47:11
Speaker 10: most of them didn't go in the in the service.
47:14
Speaker 10: By seventy three, it was all over. But you were
47:17
Speaker 10: asking me, what what do I say when people say
47:20
Speaker 10: thank you for your service? What depends on who would
47:23
Speaker 10: be Like Donna Burzil said it to me, and I said,
47:27
Speaker 10: thank you very much. She was you know, she's all
47:31
Speaker 10: the South.
47:31
Speaker 3: Oh, I know, I love her. She's I don't agree
47:34
Speaker 3: with her on everything, but but that doesn't matter. He's entertaining.
47:37
Speaker 10: She she's a she's a great American patriot and a
47:41
Speaker 10: big support of the state of Louisiana. Yeah, and thank
47:46
Speaker 10: you for your.
47:47
Speaker 3: I love it when she's on with Bill Maher. I
47:49
Speaker 3: think she and mar just have such a such a
47:51
Speaker 3: back and forth. I know you've got something you want
47:53
Speaker 3: to talk about, but I'm going to get you this
47:54
Speaker 3: Texas for you said, did you happen to hear about
47:56
Speaker 3: a Vietnam veteran back in I believe on the late
47:59
Speaker 3: six these early seventies, who was walking across the Washington
48:02
Speaker 3: Street bridge came across two little hippie punks. They messed
48:06
Speaker 3: with him and they basically held him over the rail
48:09
Speaker 3: of the bridge.
48:09
Speaker 10: Didn't hear it, Okay, didn't know it. Well, I wanted
48:13
Speaker 10: to talk about and nobody's going to expect this. On Netflix,
48:17
Speaker 10: I watched a series about the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders and
48:22
Speaker 10: I was really surprised. First thing, I always thought, boy,
48:28
Speaker 10: those football players they're gonna, yeah, they're gonna get with
48:32
Speaker 10: those girls. They're not gonna happen.
48:35
Speaker 3: They're not allowed.
48:36
Speaker 10: It's not that they're not allowed. They don't cross paths.
48:39
Speaker 10: They don't. They don't. They're never there, they don't. They
48:43
Speaker 10: don't even walk by them. Second thing, these are for
48:48
Speaker 10: the most part, very religious people, women that are married,
48:55
Speaker 10: and their views are somewhat for not all of them,
48:58
Speaker 10: but the ones I was a supposed to were conservative,
49:03
Speaker 10: and I think, you know, I just think i'd be
49:11
Speaker 10: proud of any of them are my daughter, and of
49:15
Speaker 10: course they are good looking, but you kind of get
49:18
Speaker 10: lost in that because they worked so hard and some
49:23
Speaker 10: girls wake up in life as little babies they want
49:28
Speaker 10: to be Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders and they're not going to be.
49:32
Speaker 10: Most of them aren't going to make it. And you
49:34
Speaker 10: watch that too, and their their hearts were just broken.
49:39
Speaker 3: What made you decide to want to watch a documentary
49:41
Speaker 3: about the Dallas Cowboy years.
49:42
Speaker 10: I don't know, you know, I watched Netflix and it
49:45
Speaker 10: was too long. It was it was too long, but
49:49
Speaker 10: I got into it and then I picked two girls
49:54
Speaker 10: that I wanted to win, and they won. One was
49:57
Speaker 10: from Australia and another one was named Parker. You can
50:04
Speaker 10: look them up, Faith and Parker. You can get on
50:06
Speaker 10: the internet and find them, and you'd think that it's
50:10
Speaker 10: it's not about sex. It's not sexual at all. It's
50:14
Speaker 10: about it's about choreography and for me, sociology because the
50:21
Speaker 10: way they interact with each other, they love each other.
50:25
Speaker 3: I mean, and the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders have been I
50:28
Speaker 3: mean they were they were the first ones that really
50:30
Speaker 3: got marketed. I mean, all teens had cheerleaders and so on,
50:32
Speaker 3: and they were the one, you know, the I mean,
50:34
Speaker 3: I remember the as a cowboy fan and as a
50:36
Speaker 3: kid of the nineteen seventies. You know, I had a
50:38
Speaker 3: poster of the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders hanging up in my Yeah,
50:41
Speaker 3: in my room.
50:42
Speaker 10: But two of the Dallas Cowboy former cheerleaders that are
50:47
Speaker 10: close to my age are the ones who are on
50:49
Speaker 10: the show, and everything centered around them. They were the matriarchs,
50:55
Speaker 10: and it was just I thought it was good and
50:58
Speaker 10: interesting and it changed my view you and what's changed
51:04
Speaker 10: in my life? David, If we got just another minute,
51:06
Speaker 10: we got about thirty seconds ago. Okay, is women's sport,
51:11
Speaker 10: uh huh? And I hope they don't mess with it.
51:15
Speaker 10: I mean, I get up in the morning, I go
51:17
Speaker 10: to YouTube to watch your recap of the fever. Uh huh.
51:20
Speaker 10: And because that didn't happen when I was a kid, right,
51:24
Speaker 10: all right.
