The lily-white movement began within the Republican Party after the Civil War. A fight developed not only in Texas but also across the South between white and Black factions for control of the "newly" formed party.
An organized lily-white movement had begun in Texas during the mid-1800s. Specifically 1870. In 1884 the lily-whites started a concerted drive for mastery, party takeover, and control.
