- 0:30Amen. Amen.
- 0:31Open your Bibles. First John chapter 1 is where we
- 0:34are. First John chapter 1, we're
- 0:38going to pick up where we left off in verse five.
- 0:42First John 15 and I've entitled our Bible study in the Light.
- 0:47In the light being misunderstood really stinks, doesn't it?
- 0:51It can lead to so much frustration, so many
- 0:54difficulties, and he can even do great damage to relationships
- 0:59over a simple misunderstanding. It happens all the time.
- 1:02We try to help someone, but actually it's made worse.
- 1:05We try to encourage someone, but the words are not well received.
- 1:10And since we can so easily be misunderstood on the human
- 1:13level, it's no wonder that God himself and the Gospel of Jesus
- 1:20Christ is so often misunderstood.
- 1:24Jesus himself is misunderstood and misrepresented.
- 1:29So many look to Jesus and see bad news.
- 1:32They see irrelevance and an unnecessary moral burden.
- 1:38They dismiss Jesus so quickly. And Christianity is mythology
- 1:42and superstition. And you'll hear these words.
- 1:45But throughout history, God has revealed himself through the
- 1:49biblical writers very deliberately, very clearly, and
- 1:54very plainly. The Bible reveals his actions
- 1:58and his desires and His love and His grace toward man.
- 2:02John, in the revelation given to him, takes a little bit
- 2:05different angle as he begins to share his personal experience.
- 2:10John reveals 3 of the greatest definitions and you can just jot
- 2:14him down. You might want to turn to them
- 2:16as well. You can circle them, put a star
- 2:18next to them, but very important that you learn in Bible study
- 2:21that take notes whether you're in the room or downstairs or
- 2:24yeah, I know that we've over the years, like in the world have
- 2:27been taught. We can do two things at once and
- 2:29we can kind of. But you, when you're the Bible's
- 2:31being taught, you got to give it your full attention as much as
- 2:34possible. And one of the ways to keep it's
- 2:36just to write those things down that the Holy Spirit is speaking
- 2:39to you or a scripture that you can't look up.
- 2:41You go, well, I was turning to that scripture head and you
- 2:43moved on to the next one. You moved on.
- 2:45It's good to take notes. It's good to write in your
- 2:47Bible. It's good to jot things down.
- 2:49John reveals 3 of the greatest definitions of God's nature.
- 2:53Number one, in John's gospel, chapter 4, verse 24, John
- 2:58reveals that God is Spirit. God is Spirit.
- 3:02In first John 4/16, he reveals to us and we'll get there
- 3:05eventually that God is love. And here today in first John
- 3:11chapter one verse 5, we learn that God is light.
- 3:17And as John begins a short but powerful letter, he carefully
- 3:21clarifies the message that he received from Jesus, and he
- 3:25tackles head on the subjects of God, of man and sin.
- 3:30And what's at stake here? Three times the word Koinonia is
- 3:34used in this section, and we know the Greek word Koinonia is
- 3:37translating the English fellowship.
- 3:40What's at stake is our fellowship, fellowship with God
- 3:44and fellowship with one another. If we're the fellowship with the
- 3:48one true God, we need to know who He is and how he revealed
- 3:52himself to man. Verse 5, chapter 1.
- 3:55This is the message which we have heard from him and declared
- 4:00to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
- 4:09John didn't make this up. He wants to be clear here.
- 4:13This is the message he received directly from Jesus.
- 4:18Three years he spent with Jesus. All of the apostles, when they
- 4:22share, they share first hand eyewitness testimony.
- 4:28This is what they lived and experienced.
- 4:31You know how it is. You've lived something and
- 4:33experienced something and you share it with someone else and
- 4:36they don't believe you and you, just what are you going to do?
- 4:39How can you not believe me? I was there, I lived it.
- 4:42Now you know, your angle might be off a little bit or you might
- 4:45remember it different than it actually happened, but for most
- 4:48of it, you were there. Now John the Holy Spirit has
- 4:51made sure he's 100% accurate but you know that feeling when you
- 4:55have like I'm time to tell you I was there, I experienced, I saw
- 4:58with my own eyes and it's good to see and experience things
- 5:03with your own eyes. All the apostles had first hand
- 5:06knowledge. Jot it down.
- 5:07Second Peter chapter one verse 16.
- 5:10They were already being accused of making things up in the 1st
- 5:13century. They were already hearing this
- 5:15accusation. Peter writes, for we did not
- 5:18follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the
- 5:22power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we're
- 5:27witnesses of His Majesty. And here's the message, verse 5,
- 5:32the message that we heard and we're telling you right now is
- 5:34that God is light. This is a positive affirmation
- 5:40of God's essential character. He is not some light.
- 5:45He is not a light. He is light and the symbolism
- 5:51and imagery of God, the imagery of God is light is used
- 5:55throughout the Old Testament. This is something that would be
- 5:58very familiar to his audience. That's why when a pastor is
- 6:02here, as I am today, and he's grasping for illustrations, he
- 6:07used something that's relevant to the day.
- 6:10You know, I may, if I want to talk about football, I may talk
- 6:12about the Broncos. If I talk about baseball, I'm
- 6:15going to definitely talk about the Dodgers, of course.
- 6:20And if I want to talk about, you know, Christians are winners,
- 6:22I'll probably compare them to, well, you get the point.
- 6:28I'm going to use something that's going to grab your
- 6:30attention that you won't forget. It's relevant.
- 6:34It's now I want you to hold on to it that you might forget
- 6:38other things I say. But if you can remember the
- 6:40illustration or you can remember the little thing that made you
- 6:42laugh, it'll be a hook that the Holy Spirit can bring back
- 6:45another memory. And so as he uses imagery, this
- 6:49is familiar to them. Let me show you turn over to
- 6:51Psalm 36. This would not be unfamiliar.
- 6:54It immediately connect to them. Psalm 36.
- 6:58You know, when I'm using illustrations like I-25 because
- 7:02our Bible studies are all throughout the country or even
- 7:05around the world. There are times where I have to
- 7:07clarify I-25. I might have to say that's the
- 7:10main highway. You guys know the North and
- 7:12South. Now, of course, you guys know
- 7:14that, but other people outside of Colorado may not know it.
- 7:17And so there are times when I'm clarifying things because
- 7:20there's an audience much bigger than the room here, But you guys
- 7:23get it. I-25, you know, I-25, the
- 7:25traffic and the lanes. And now they're making us pay
- 7:28for roads that we already paid for.
- 7:29Have you seen that? That's a different Bible study
- 7:33for a different day. Psalm 36.
- 7:36Notice this illustration of light in verse 9, For with you
- 7:41is the fountain of life, and in your light we see light.
- 7:46Psalm 104. Since you're already in the
- 7:48Psalms, Psalm 104, we have this picture all throughout the Old
- 7:54Testament. It's very, very familiar.
- 7:56In Psalm 104 and verse one, it says Bless the Lord, O my soul,
- 8:02Oh Lord my God, you are very great.
- 8:05You are clothed with honor and majesty.
- 8:07You cover yourself with light as with a garment who stretch out
- 8:12the heavens like a curtain. John is not saying that God is a
- 8:17light bulb when John says that God is light.
- 8:20There are several truths that this illustration points to.
- 8:25Again, jot them down #1 Light is almost a almost always a
- 8:29universal truth, a symbol of truth.
- 8:32It's almost used exclusively as a universal symbol of truth.
- 8:36Again, Psalm 43, verse 3, send out your light and your truth.
- 8:41Let them lead me. Let them bring me to your holy
- 8:44hill and to your Tabernacle. Morally, light represents purity
- 8:50and holiness. Isaiah chapter 5, verse 20.
- 8:53Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness
- 8:58for light, and light for darkness, bitter for sweet, and
- 9:02sweet for bitter. Light also #3 often represents
- 9:07guidance and illumination in Psalm 27, verse one.
- 9:12The Lord is my light and my salvation.
- 9:16Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my
- 9:19life. Of whom shall I be afraid?
- 9:21Another one to that Proverbs chapter 6, verse 23.
- 9:24For the commandment is a lamp and a law.
- 9:30A light reproves of instruction or a way of life, symbol of
- 9:34truth, purity, holiness, guidance, illumination.
- 9:40Then Jesus comes on the scene and what does he say?
- 9:43In John chapter 8, verse 12, Jesus spoke to them again saying
- 9:46I am the light of the world and he who follows me will not walk
- 9:52in darkness but have the light of life.
- 9:56John is saying that Jesus got in the flesh, we touched him, we
- 10:00heard him, and we want you to share the same joy and
- 10:03fellowship that we have. God is light.
- 10:07And then he says in verse 5, since God is light, there is no
- 10:12darkness in him at all. This is important to grasp, very
- 10:17important to grasp as you're dealing and ministering and
- 10:20serving with other people. First of all, God is absolutely
- 10:24perfect. There is no deviation from truth
- 10:27from Him. In Him is joy, peace,
- 10:30righteousness and fidelity. Everything about God is honest,
- 10:35right, just, holy. Jesus is not like the moon who a
- 10:44mere reflection of light. He is the sun in that comparison
- 10:49with no darkness at all radiating his love.
- 10:54And so while life light symbolizes truth and holiness
- 10:58and purity, the symbolism of darkness is also important.
- 11:02The symbolism of darkness is just as you know when you
- 11:05somebody refer to somebody that black and white.
- 11:07This is the area where we're getting light and dark.
- 11:10There is no in between, and the symbolism of darkness represents
- 11:14everything that is contrary to the life that God desires for
- 11:17His children. And I want you to notice if you
- 11:20read ahead first, John's very easy to read.
- 11:23You can read it every week. You can read it daily if you
- 11:25like for a month, and it'll start absorbing it.
- 11:27But it's interesting that John doesn't speak about Gray areas.
- 11:32I hear a lot of believers speak about Gray areas.
- 11:35They like to live in the Gray areas.
- 11:38They like to find places, and typically if you're living in
- 11:43the Gray area on purpose, you're probably leaning more toward
- 11:46darkness than you are light. Why would you need Gray if
- 11:49you're not farther away from the light than you need to be
- 11:52typically? Now, I do recognize I'm not
- 11:55opposed, and I've even taught Bible studies on how to live
- 11:59when you see yourself in the Gray area, and I'll always point
- 12:01you toward the Lord for sure. But I do admit there are areas
- 12:05where you need to learn how to make decisions that may not seem
- 12:09so black and white. However, I want to suggest to
- 12:12you that most of life is really black and white, light and dark.
- 12:17And the reason why you're stuck in the Gray is because you want
- 12:21to be stuck in the Gray. And you don't want to say that
- 12:24you're totally in the darkness. No way.
- 12:27And you know, you can't say you're totally in the light, but
- 12:30you're kind of in the middle. For example, I'll give you an
- 12:33example that just pops into mind this whole issue of smoking
- 12:36cigarettes. Smoking cigarettes, I'm not
- 12:38going to be able to find anywhere in the Bible that says,
- 12:40you know, in 3rd Corinthians chapter 5, thou shall not smoke
- 12:45cigarettes. It's a Gray area to some degree,
- 12:48but Gray area, you're not going to find a Scripture that says
- 12:51don't smoke cigarettes, just not going to be there.
- 12:56And so those that are addicted to cigarettes or love
- 12:58cigarettes, it's like it's a Gray area.
- 12:59It's a grayer, brother. I got freedom.
- 13:01I got freedom. Yeah, I know.
- 13:03I know. But God is light and he's not
- 13:06going to light up with you when you like that one that just came
- 13:11to me right now, not on my notes at all.
- 13:16I'm glad you're with me. Hope you laughed.
- 13:19And when you're not in the room, but it's it's really not as
- 13:23great as you think it is because there are other places that
- 13:25inform such a behavior. Like you're the temple of the
- 13:28Holy Spirit. You want to take care of
- 13:31yourself, want to honor God. You want to live as long as you
- 13:33can so you can be used as long as you can for the glory of God.
- 13:36You don't want to purposely shorten your life.
- 13:39You don't want to be addicted and held by these things.
- 13:41There's a lot of reasons that would lean you toward the light,
- 13:44wouldn't it? There's not too much that's
- 13:46going to take you to the dark. You don't want to go to the
- 13:49dark, though, because the Bible says that God is light, and the
- 13:53Bible says that God lives in you.
- 13:55So the more you would reflect the light of God, the closer you
- 13:58are to Him. But so many believers today
- 14:02would just rather live in the Gray area and make it larger and
- 14:06larger and larger. But the Bible says even today
- 14:09God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.
- 14:13Let me give you another example, lying.
- 14:17Lying couldn't be more clear. The Bible speaks of lying as an
- 14:23absolute light. Thou shalt not lie that is given
- 14:29to us as the epic part of the epic 10 that God gives us from
- 14:33Mount Sinai, reflecting his character.
- 14:35But it's repeated over and over and over and over and over
- 14:38again. So what do people do?
- 14:39Believers even even in, in order to live in the Gray area, they,
- 14:43they, they create colors and they assign them to, to lies.
- 14:47So you know, brother, that was just a little white lie.
- 14:51OK, that's darkness. A little white lie is complete
- 14:55darkness. Well, you know, that was just
- 14:57one of the you got to and it wasn't really a lie.
- 14:59I was just didn't really tell the whole truth.
- 15:02I know that's darkness. That's not Gray, that's
- 15:05darkness. And John's saying the message
- 15:08that Jesus gave is that he's light and in him there's no
- 15:13darkness at all. Darkness, if you're taking
- 15:16notes, is a picture of lostness. Matthew chapter 4, verse 16.
- 15:20The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light.
- 15:24It pictures separation. Darkness does.
- 15:27It's a picture in the Bible of separation from God's life.
- 15:31Ephesians chapter 4, verse 18. It says having their
- 15:34understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God.
- 15:39The Bible tells us that the world, this system lives in
- 15:43darkness. And why is this world system so
- 15:46full of darkness? Why does darkness enter the life
- 15:49of Christians all the time? Because the light of the world
- 15:52is refused and excluded, they can't exist.
- 15:56At the same time Jesus said in John chapter 3 verse 18, he who
- 16:00believes in him is not condemned, but he who does not
- 16:03believe is condemned already because he is not believed in
- 16:07the name of the only begotten Son of God.
- 16:09And this is what Jesus says in verse 19.
- 16:11He says for John chapter 3 and this is the condemnation.
- 16:15You ready? That light has come into the
- 16:18world and men loved darkness rather than light.
- 16:22That is not just a world unbelieving decision.
- 16:27Believers do this all the time. They love the darkness more than
- 16:31they love the light. There's another illustration.
- 16:36I think we need to spend a little bit of time on today and
- 16:39just lay it out there for now and for anyone that listens to
- 16:42this later. And that is this one other
- 16:45symbol, darkness. It also implies secrecy, or that
- 16:50which is unseen. People have a tendency to hide
- 16:55things in dark places. When they're hiding something,
- 16:59they try to put it in a dark somewhere away from just
- 17:03normally being seen and in the light.
- 17:06Sometimes what's hidden is sin. In Psalm 19 verse 12, the
- 17:12psalmist says who can understand his errors cleanse me from
- 17:16secret faults. Which leads to an interesting
- 17:19question, a good question, and that is there is there such a
- 17:24thing as secret sin? It's kind of a trick question.
- 17:31Is there such a thing as secret sin?
- 17:34The answer is yes and no. It's actually a question that
- 17:38has 2 answers. It was Louis Schaefer that put
- 17:42it this way. And I quote secret sin down
- 17:45here. Is open scandal up there?
- 17:51And so while you and I may be able to keep sin a secret from
- 17:56each other temporarily, temporarily, be sure that your
- 18:00sin will find you out. The Bible says temporarily there
- 18:04is no secret sin when it comes to our relationship with God.
- 18:08There is nothing hidden in his sight, nothing.
- 18:12So it's answer is yes and no. I want you to remember it that
- 18:15way. There is a great prideful
- 18:18confidence among believers either.
- 18:19I'm not naive enough to think that there's stuff right now
- 18:23that's hidden. You have the air right now in
- 18:25this room. Some of you have the air that
- 18:27you're walking with the Lord and all is well.
- 18:29But you know that you're hiding something and you're hiding it
- 18:33from us, and the only person that you're hurting is you.
- 18:36And I guess secondarily, you're hurting the body of Christ
- 18:40because you're living in sin and pretending not to, and you're
- 18:44trying to hide it from us, but you're just exposed and you're
- 18:47exposed and you're exposed before the Lord until finally
- 18:50you just harden your heart and you don't listen anymore, you
- 18:53grieve the Holy Spirit. It's a hard thing to live with
- 18:57when you're hiding sin. You have it.
- 19:00The enemy has you believe in a lie.
- 19:02And that is if I come clean and I repent, it's just going to
- 19:05ruin everything and it's going to be so hard.
- 19:07Now, actually, that's a lie because, yeah, it might be hard
- 19:11and things might be ruined, but you're already ruined.
- 19:14You're living in perpetual ruin right now.
- 19:18And your life is hard right now. And all the relationships that
- 19:21you have with people that love you are not real.
- 19:24You go. What do you mean, Ed?
- 19:26Well, we all love you and we care for you, but we don't know
- 19:28the truth. We love a false part of you.
- 19:33We love you for who you are. But now you're not giving us
- 19:35yourself. You're holding back from the
- 19:38body of Christ. You can't fellowship with God
- 19:40and you're having a hard time fellowshipping with us, and you
- 19:43are being set up to be completely destroyed.
- 19:50For what? What do you gain out of it?
- 19:54Guilt, shame, condemnation, separation.
- 20:02Is there such a thing as secret sin?
- 20:03Yes and no, as God is calling you to himself.
- 20:07I remember David in Second Samuel Chapter 11.
- 20:10David thought that his blatant sexual adulterous sin with
- 20:14Bathsheba, he thought he got away with it.
- 20:19He thought he kept it secret instead of living in the life
- 20:22number 1. He tried to transfer his
- 20:24transfer his sin to someone else #2 he tried to hide his sin with
- 20:30another sin #3 he tried to cover his sin by just ignoring it.
- 20:36And #4 God brings Nathan to him and gives him a little story
- 20:41that awakens the morality inside of him, gives him the whole
- 20:44story. David, is it?
- 20:45Go kill the man, kill the man. But the penalty for the story
- 20:50wasn't death. But what was he carrying the
- 20:54penalty of his own sin. It's not God's will for you and
- 20:58me to live with any secret sin. There is no such thing as secret
- 21:03sin with God. But we're not to hide anything
- 21:05with one another or try to put on errors or be hypocrites, just
- 21:08to live our life in the grace of God, to be humble and repentant
- 21:12and get things in order. He certainly doesn't want you
- 21:16living in darkness. He doesn't want you living in
- 21:18the Gray areas. He wants you living in the
- 21:21light. To bring our sins into the light
- 21:24and be forgiven in Jesus, to enjoy God.
- 21:28John says God is light. We were with him.
- 21:32He's absolutely pure and holy and without fault or sin.
- 21:36And you see over and over again that the atmosphere that Jesus
- 21:40created was one of truth. They were themselves with him.
- 21:44So much so they say they would come to Jesus.
- 21:46Jesus, they would come to Jesus. As we learn with John and his
- 21:49brother, We're going to wipe them out.
- 21:51OK, You want us to wipe them out?
- 21:53We're ready to wipe them out. Jesus, we got murder in our
- 21:56hearts. And Jesus says, no, guys, no,
- 22:00no, no, no, don't want to kill them.
- 22:02I want to serve them and love them.
- 22:07You guys, you don't even know what spirit you are, but you're
- 22:11one step closer to that knowledge because you told me
- 22:13the truth. You told me what you wanted to
- 22:17do. And you don't see that repeated
- 22:19again. You don't see John trying to
- 22:22kill people at every city. Wipe them out.
- 22:25James and John wipe them out. No, what?
- 22:27What do we see? John becomes the apostle of
- 22:31love. There was an honesty and a
- 22:35fidelity, not a perfection. None of us are going to be
- 22:39deliver perfection. We've learned that none of us
- 22:41are. But we we.
- 22:42That's no excuse to live in willful, hidden sin or to make
- 22:47excuses for our behavior. We need to come to the light,
- 22:52the light of the world who reaches out in his love.
- 22:56And now John is going to lead us to a logical conclusion.
- 23:00If God is light and we're in fellowship with Him, then our
- 23:03lives should reflect the same characteristics he possesses.
- 23:07John will say that people who truly have fellowship with God
- 23:11will share things in common with God.
- 23:14Back in your Bible, you'll notice in verse 6, in verse 8
- 23:18and verse 10, you can just see it ahead of time.
- 23:20You see the phrase if we say verse 6, then again in verse 8
- 23:25if we say, and again in verse 10 if we say, He'll measure us for
- 23:35our claims and he'll match our claims with our actions.
- 23:40We typically judge ourselves by our motives, but everybody lives
- 23:45with us by our actions. I don't know if you noticed
- 23:48that, but if you've hurt someone or you did something wrong and
- 23:51you're trying to work it out, one of the first things that
- 23:53comes up, you might say this because you probably mean it.
- 23:56I didn't mean to do that. That's a statement of motive.
- 24:00I didn't mean to do that. Like you might be messing around
- 24:03and, you know, you slap somebody beside the head and they start
- 24:06to bleed and you go, well, I didn't mean to do that.
- 24:09Like, bro, it was your hand. Like I I get it was your hand,
- 24:12my face, your hand, my blood. They're not denying the fact
- 24:17that they didn't do it. They're speaking immediately to
- 24:20the motive of the heart. And what John is saying is when
- 24:25you're in the light, your actions match your motives.
- 24:30It's so good. That's what we want anyway.
- 24:32Notice verse 6. If we say that we have
- 24:36fellowship, that Greek word is what?
- 24:38Koinonia, Koinonia, Koinonia, beautiful Bible word.
- 24:45If we say we have Koinonia or fellowship with him and walk in
- 24:49darkness, what does that mean? We say church lie and do not
- 24:55practice the truth. It's a very important principle.
- 25:00We have been invited and been given the privilege of walking
- 25:03in the light of the glory of God.
- 25:05What an incredible thing that God would want to walk with us.
- 25:09And it's important to remember that if we say that we are
- 25:12walking in the light, then we won't walk in darkness.
- 25:16In the context of what we just studied, if we say we're walking
- 25:20in the Spirit, we will not walk in the flesh.
- 25:25If we say we walk in the Spirit, we won't fulfill the lusts of
- 25:28our flesh. It's one or the other as we
- 25:33fell. Have fellowship in the light.
- 25:36There were false teachers, the Gnostics in the 1st century.
- 25:40There were false teachers that were saying that you could live
- 25:44in the darkness and in the light at the same time.
- 25:48The Gnostics spelled GNOSTICS. The Gnostics taught that it
- 25:55really didn't matter how you acted.
- 25:58They claim to have the highest knowledge of God, but their
- 26:01lives spoke otherwise. That phrase, walk in darkness is
- 26:06in the present tense, Speaking of a continual lifestyle.
- 26:10The false teachers were saying, and some were agreeing as saying
- 26:13in effect, that I can walk in both the light and the darkness
- 26:16at the same time. I can practice sin and be in
- 26:20fellowship with God at the same time.
- 26:22And John's answer to that was that's a lie.
- 26:26It's not possible, which is why I think since humans, we create
- 26:30new categories while I'm in the Gray area.
- 26:33I mean, you may or may not be in the Gray area, but you have to
- 26:35check yourself. You have to check before the
- 26:38Lord that you haven't created something to try to get away
- 26:42from the fact that you're saying you're walking in a light, but
- 26:44you're walking in darkness. It's possible for all of us.
- 26:50Let's add a little clarity here so we understand the reality of
- 26:54our humanity. Is it possible for a Christian
- 26:59to fall into sin? Yes.
- 27:02Is it possible for a Christian to even begin practicing sin?
- 27:07Yes. Those are both unfortunate
- 27:10realities of life. But it is not possible for the
- 27:14person in sin to be in fellowship with God at the same
- 27:18time. It's impossible for a prodigal
- 27:22son or daughter to be in fellowship with God when they're
- 27:24actively rebelling against God. It is the exact opposite.
- 27:30Living in darkness spiritually is frightening.
- 27:33But here's the danger. You and I, men and women, have a
- 27:38tendency to like just a little bit of darkness, a little bit,
- 27:45just to dabble in a few areas of the world, a few areas of our
- 27:48thoughts. Bright lights tend to irritate
- 27:52us. If I had one of the bright LED
- 27:56flashlights that we just purchased to fix things, not
- 28:00like I fix things, but the flashlights there in case I need
- 28:02to see what needs to be fixed. We literally had a guy come out
- 28:06and fix something and we like the flashlight so I wouldn't got
- 28:09one. Not that I could fix anything,
- 28:10but the flashlight was pretty cool so I got it there.
- 28:13Super bright, you can set it up and move it all around and super
- 28:16bright. But if I took that flashlight
- 28:17and I shined it in your eyes, you would naturally turn away.
- 28:22It's not comfortable to have a bright light in your face, which
- 28:28when we open the Scriptures, the Bible being the light of God's
- 28:32counsel to us and it sheds light on our dark lives.
- 28:35We don't always like what it says.
- 28:36I mean, I said a few things tonight aren't very popular,
- 28:39like Vassar. You calling me a liar?
- 28:41A no God is. If you think you can live in
- 28:46darkness but say at the same time you're in the light, what
- 28:52does it say? We lie and do not practice the
- 28:56truth. It's a hard that's the light.
- 28:59That's for some the light just and you naturally recoil.
- 29:03Why? Because we like a little bit of
- 29:05darkness. Brightness has a tendency to
- 29:08irritate us. And spiritually it's easy to
- 29:12grow comfortable as long as the light is not turned completely
- 29:16on. I believe that's one of the
- 29:20attractions in churches today that don't quite teach the
- 29:23Bible, but they use it. They don't quite teach the
- 29:26Bible, but they use it. And they have series of Bible
- 29:31studies over the years where, you know, they're entertaining
- 29:34and informative, kind of pep talky.
- 29:37You leave in courage. You leave because there's a
- 29:39little bit of light. We can deal with a little bit of
- 29:41light. I like a little bit of light.
- 29:43I talked maybe mentioned sin every five weeks or so, or we
- 29:48might see that in the Scriptures.
- 29:49It's very challenging though, for pastors such as myself in a
- 29:54I'm saying it's challenging. It's not challenge for me
- 29:56personally, but I could see how it's challenging where you're
- 29:59looking ahead and like, oh man, Lord, you want me to mention
- 30:02that there are liars in the church?
- 30:04That's hard thing. They're going to stone me, man.
- 30:07Like that's a hard thing to say. Maybe I could just soften a
- 30:10little bit. That's bright.
- 30:12That's a big word. That's a bright word that's
- 30:15going to that's going to get some that's going to shine the
- 30:17light on someone's darkness that that they're living in
- 30:20compromise and that they're just, they're, they're being
- 30:22hypocrites with the people that want to love them.
- 30:24Those are hard words. And the father says, yeah, but
- 30:28they'll never have fellowship with the son until they get
- 30:31through that truth. They've got to turn away from
- 30:34the darkness and get back to the light.
- 30:37But our problem is, is we don't like the bright lights.
- 30:41We would rather have like the, you know, if, if we could
- 30:43control the dimming switch, we'd rather have it dimmed.
- 30:46And in my office, I have two light switches and they're both
- 30:51go on. And in my, up in the ceiling,
- 30:53there are light fixtures with three light bulbs.
- 30:56And I'll tell you, I almost always just flip one switch that
- 30:59only turns the middle one on because I think all three of
- 31:01them are way too bright for my little office.
- 31:04And, and I understand, like I'd rather, I don't want it so
- 31:06bright personally, if, if people will allow it, I'd rather not
- 31:09turn the light on at all and just open the shades a little
- 31:12bit and have a little bit of light coming.
- 31:14It won't be bright at all. But when we have that spiritual
- 31:19dimmer switch and we're really not wanting the brightness,
- 31:22it'll lead us into lifestyles of sin every time and starts always
- 31:26with a little compromise. And God will send a Nathan into
- 31:31your life and you'll just reject him, and he'll send someone else
- 31:35and you'll reject them and it'll always be someone else's fault
- 31:39and always be the situation. It'll always be.
- 31:42You don't understand. It'll always be something.
- 31:44When God is being merciful to you is what he shines like.
- 31:47This happens a lot in this church in particular, where you
- 31:51may have come from another fellowship family that didn't
- 31:55expose the situation so much with the light.
- 31:59And you have come into a sanctuary in a place where the
- 32:03light is always on. All the switches get turned on
- 32:06because we want what's best for you.
- 32:09You may be held accountable to behaviors you've never been
- 32:12accountable to in your whole life.
- 32:15I have spoken to people who go, I've been in a church my whole
- 32:17life and nobody's ever said that to me.
- 32:19And my first answer is, I'm sorry.
- 32:21How could you be in a church your whole life and not read
- 32:23this verse? It's right here, like it's been
- 32:26there all the time. You've been carrying your Bible
- 32:28to and from church all this time and and it's very uncomfortable.
- 32:31So what happens is you fight the light and you can't fight the
- 32:34light because you'll lose against God.
- 32:36So you know what will happen? You'll fight the people that
- 32:38share the light with you. And John says, look, just make
- 32:42it simple. God is light.
- 32:45Is there any darkness in him Church?
- 32:47No, not. At.
- 32:49All James would say that there's no shadow of turning with him,
- 32:54no shadows, no Gray. In verse 7, it says, but if we
- 32:59walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship
- 33:03with one another and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses
- 33:07us from all sin. Isn't that great?
- 33:12We're going to study that next time.
- 33:14I don't want to gloss over this, so I'm going to pause here and
- 33:18we're going to pick it up next time.
- 33:19This verse enough to say now this verse has become a banner
- 33:25truth in serving on the team here at Calvary.
- 33:31We've had episodes on our team here at Calvary where there have
- 33:34been people not walking in the light as he is in the light and
- 33:39it broken fellowship among our team, among those that serve and
- 33:42done great damage to the body of Christ.
- 33:45So we're always like, no, we got to walk in the light.
- 33:47We have to be truthful one another.
- 33:48We have to support one another. We have a phrase, you know, as
- 33:52we're going forward in spiritual warfare.
- 33:53We have a phrase, we call it an axiom or a principle here where
- 33:56we lock Shields and we fight together.
- 34:00We move forward together. We are together and and this is
- 34:03a band. We have to do it in the light.
- 34:06You, you won't make much progress.
- 34:08There may be the frustration you carry you.
- 34:10Perhaps I'm speaking to people that aren't even here, but
- 34:13they'll hear it later. The frustration.
- 34:14You might feel as if you're not in the light.
- 34:16You're going to feel frustrated. You may feel left out and there.
- 34:23This is one of the truths that you need to come back to.
- 34:26Am I walking in the light like He is in the light?
- 34:31Because Jesus was truthful. He told the truth, the easy, the
- 34:37hard, those that hit, good, those that didn't.
- 34:42And the truth for us is not to walk in darkness according to
- 34:45verse 6, but to walk in the light.
- 34:47And we'll get into that more next time.
- 34:49I don't want to just go through it quickly.
- 34:51So Father, as we look to you today, knowing your character is
- 34:56to be in the light and knowing your character is a light and we
- 34:59are to be in the light. I just pray over our church
- 35:03today that we wouldn't be hypocrites.
- 35:06Not that we haven't stumbled or that we maybe haven't made
- 35:09mistakes along the way, of course we have.
- 35:12But to willingly be deceitful and deceptive with each other
- 35:18but also with ourselves. Deliver us, Lord, why are we
- 35:24here? But to walk in the light, why
- 35:26are we here? But to learn how to be truthful
- 35:28with our spouse and with our children, with our siblings,
- 35:31with our church family, with our friends?
- 35:34To not hide anything, to not be afraid to be found out.
- 35:39To not have to like, run away from the light, but to just flip
- 35:45all those switches on to enjoy and welcome the truth.
- 35:49To receive light is warmth and guidance and purity and
- 35:54holiness. To not live in darkness, not be
- 35:57swayed by the darkness of this world, but to walk in the light.
- 36:03And even as we will learn to walk in the light, as He is in
- 36:08the light, we're going to have fellowship with one another,
- 36:11fellowship with you, God, fellowship with one another.
- 36:14The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin.
- 36:18Thank you, Lord, for that glorious truth.
- 36:21Pour out your Spirit upon us as we leave here.
- 36:25Speak to us, Lord. I know looking at these truth
- 36:28stirs up so much, but it only stirs it up so we could skim it
- 36:31away. Lord, skim it away.
- 36:33We want to be like David, try to hide and destroy and try to get
- 36:37away with something. We don't want a Nathan.
- 36:40We have the Holy Spirit. We don't need a Nathan to come
- 36:42and tell us. We have the Holy Spirit.
- 36:44We can come clean before you right now.
- 36:46And if you're here today, you need to come clean before the
- 36:48Lord. Just do it.
- 36:49I'm not going to ask for an open response or anything.
- 36:52I want to embarrass you. I'm not asking for that.
- 36:55You might after the service, come and talk to somebody, tell
- 36:57somebody. I just can't clean tonight.
- 37:02Have a testimony. Maybe for the first time, you
- 37:05need to receive the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 37:08You can just ask God to forgive you of your sins.
- 37:11The blood's been shed. For some of you who might need
- 37:14to tell the truth to someone, you've been lying to them.
- 37:16You got to tell the truth. I didn't have it in my notes,
- 37:21but that silly illustration about cigarettes.
- 37:23Maybe you have some addiction that you've been presenting
- 37:26yourself. I know the world, what the world
- 37:27calls addiction. Jesus says if you present
- 37:29yourself a slave to it, sin, you'll be a slave to sin.
- 37:33But if you present yourself to righteousness, you'll be free.
- 37:36The sun sets you free. You know what the Bible says,
- 37:38you'll be free indeed, true for you.
- 37:42Just let the Spirit work, walk in newness of life.
- 37:46Allow him, allow, give them, give them permission again,
- 37:51search me, Lord, and know me and show and reveal any unclean
- 37:55thing in my life. And then after the service,
- 37:58pastors and their prayer team will be up here to serve you and
- 38:00pray with you. The body of Christ will be here.
- 38:03Serve and pray for one another, encourage one another and the
- 38:06Lord, pray for each other and what's on your heart and on your
- 38:10mind and just what you're carrying.
- 38:12Like Kevin brought those prayer requests.
- 38:14If you're hurting, let us pray for you.
- 38:16If you're struggling, let us pray for you.
- 38:19If you've been living the hypocrite life, let us pray for
- 38:21you. Maybe you're listening on the
- 38:22radio. You need to drive down here
- 38:24before we lock up. We'll be here for another half
- 38:26hour after the service. You can drive down here.
- 38:29Hampton and Tower, we'll be here.
- 38:31Just come on in and we'll pray for you.
- 38:35You're welcome here. Come clean before the Lord.
- 38:38Let him do that thorough work in you.
- 38:39The time is short and the coming of the Lord is at hand.
- 38:43God is calling His church to the light and away from darkness.
- 38:47Let's sing this song. Allow the Spirit of God to
- 38:49minister and read ahead for the rest of the chapter.
- 38:53See what God has for us should we get to come back again to
- 38:57worship. We pray that you've been
