- 0:00Hey there, welcome back. I want to ask you a question.
- 0:05Have you ever wanted to know more about the fruit of the
- 0:08Spirit or how it operates in you or how you can actually apply it
- 0:14to your life? Well, today I sit with Ava
- 0:18Pennington. She is an author, speaker, Bible
- 0:22teacher, and she is certified in adult Bible studies from Moody
- 0:26Bible Institute. She is also a member of the
- 0:29Christian Authors Network and the Advanced Writers and
- 0:33Speakers Association and has authored so many books,
- 0:37including this one we're going to talk about called Flourish,
- 0:42Grace Centered Practices to Protect and Grow a Fruitful Life
- 0:47in Christ. In this episode, we explore the
- 0:519 attributes of the fruit of the Spirit as described in Galatians
- 0:56522 through 23 and the practical application that guide us to
- 1:01understand how these qualities reflect God's character and how
- 1:06they can be cultivated in our everyday lives.
- 1:09We also talk about protecting and growing the fruit and the
- 1:13four unique sections of this book that I absolutely love that
- 1:17sets this book apart from others.
- 1:20I love this conversation so much, and I know you will too.
- 1:24So if you're ready, I'm ready. Here's my guest, Ava Pennington.
- 1:28Hi Ava, welcome to Speaks Life. I am so thrilled you are here
- 1:33sharing with us today. Welcome.
- 1:35Well, thank you. I'm thrilled to be here.
- 1:37I'm really looking forward to our conversation.
- 1:39So thank you for having me. Yeah, we're going to be talking
- 1:42about something that's really, I think, vital in our walk with
- 1:47the Lord. We're going to be talking about
- 1:49the nine attributes of the fruit of the Spirit out of Galatians
- 1:53522 through 23. And you had written a book
- 1:57called Flourish, Grace Centered Practices to Protect and Grow a
- 2:01fruitful life in Christ. And I can't wait to talk more
- 2:06about your message. And before we do, I would love
- 2:10for you to share if you have a scripture verse that resonates
- 2:16with you right now and why. Well, actually I do and it
- 2:21resonates with resonates with me, but it also resonates with
- 2:24the topic. And it's Ephesians 610 where
- 2:29Paul writes to the Christians in Ephesus be strong in the Lord
- 2:35and in his mighty power. And he actually uses that
- 2:38sentence to introduce the armor of God.
- 2:44So you you might think, well, that's the armor of God.
- 2:47That's not the fruit of the spirit.
- 2:49But I love that verse because it combines 2 things and it's such
- 2:54a, a good reminder for me because he's telling us be
- 2:58strong. And that's me.
- 3:00That's what I bring. That's the the commitment I'm
- 3:03going to make. But how am I strong in his
- 3:08power? And God is the one who equips me
- 3:11to be strong. And isn't that the tension that
- 3:14we have in the, in the Christian life, that balance of doing our
- 3:20part and yet relying on him for the equipping and the strength
- 3:24to do our part? So I love that, that it's such a
- 3:28short burst, you know, be strong in the in his in the strength of
- 3:33the Lord and his mighty power. And I love that it it
- 3:36encapsulates both sides. Yes.
- 3:40Oh, so good. Yeah.
- 3:42Beautiful. Short, but just so powerful.
- 3:45I love it. Thanks for sharing that.
- 3:48That's encouraging and just a reminder of His power.
- 3:52We have our part and then He does the rest, right?
- 3:55So let's talk about your book and your message.
- 4:00You're guiding us through ways we can understand these
- 4:04qualities that reflect God's character and how to cultivate
- 4:08the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.
- 4:10So what encouraged you to write Flourish?
- 4:14Share your personal faith journey on how this shapes your
- 4:19book. It actually grew out of my own
- 4:21need. I mean, I I asked the question
- 4:24in the book if Christians are promised the fruit of the
- 4:28Spirit. And by the way, I so appreciated
- 4:30that you said that this is about the at the 9 attributes or
- 4:35facets of the fruit singular because so many times people
- 4:40refer to it as fruits, plural, but it is a single fruit from
- 4:45the Holy Spirit that is manifested in nine different
- 4:50ways. And I, I was motivated to study
- 4:54this more because I had to ask myself, if Christians are
- 4:59promised this fruit because we have God's Spirit dwelling in
- 5:04US, why is it I, and I realized in talking to people, so many
- 5:10others, why is it I keep saying, I wish I had more self-control.
- 5:14I wish I had more peace. I wish I had more joy.
- 5:17I wish I had more patience. OK, so where's the disconnect?
- 5:22Why don't I have these things? Why aren't I experiencing them
- 5:27in abundance? If that's what God promised me?
- 5:31And God doesn't lie, right? He promised this.
- 5:34So where is the disconnect? And that's that's really what
- 5:39got me started on the subject. I love it.
- 5:42I know. I think it's a common one that
- 5:45we just kind of push aside. We don't quite think about it or
- 5:49we're not intentional about it. We don't totally understand that
- 5:54it is in US and it's accessible anytime and so and that we can
- 6:00mature it. And so that's why we're here.
- 6:02We're going to talk about it and because you've done your
- 6:04research on it, I'm going to have you share all about it.
- 6:09And I love that you emphasized in your book about protecting
- 6:13and growing the fruit of the spirit.
- 6:15I've heard growing the fruit of the spirit, but I haven't heard
- 6:18about protecting. So I love that you share that.
- 6:22This is a, a key practice that defends against any spiritual
- 6:27attacks. So could you expand more on
- 6:30that? Sure, I'm there are a lot of
- 6:34books out there about the fruit of the Spirit and some really
- 6:36great references and resources, but I haven't found a lot that
- 6:45helps me guard against the enemy's attacks in my life.
- 6:50The temptations and the obstacles and the struggles that
- 6:54actually work against my nurturing and cultivating the
- 6:58fruit that God has planted in me by his Holy Spirit.
- 7:04And so when we talk about protecting that fruit, it's are
- 7:08we aware of how the enemy and the world?
- 7:13And this is not just about the devil, but it's, it's how does
- 7:17the world we live in work against the fruit that God wants
- 7:22to grow in US? And the more that we can be
- 7:26aware, Paul talks about being aware of the schemes of the
- 7:30devil to understand so that we can be on guard.
- 7:35And so that was part of why I wanted to look at not just
- 7:42growing that fruit, but understanding what is happening
- 7:47in our life, in the world around us that works against growing
- 7:52that fruit. Yeah, So what works against
- 7:56growing that fruit? Like what shared like an
- 8:00example? OK, so for each of the
- 8:05manifestations of fruit, you know, there are different kinds
- 8:09of temptations. You know, we think about the
- 8:13classic story of of Peter coming out of the boat and walking on
- 8:17water and what happens? He takes his eyes off Jesus.
- 8:20He looks at the wind, in the at the waves and he starts to sink.
- 8:24So, you know, being distracted is, you know, being tempted to
- 8:27distract and being tempted to be so focused on our circumstances
- 8:33that they completely cloud out or or block our view of the Lord
- 8:40and what he is trying to do. We often I think the biggest
- 8:48obstacle is that works against us is our Western culture that
- 8:56does not view the word surrender positively.
- 9:00So you know, we are we're raised that you know, we don't
- 9:04surrender. You know, we're, we're tough,
- 9:06we're going to be independent and, and yet surrenders the
- 9:11heart of it. You know, the Holy Spirit is
- 9:13planting this fruit. How is it nurtured and
- 9:16cultivated? It's nurtured and cultivated
- 9:19through surrender to him. And that's where and, and we do
- 9:26talk about the things that we can do to grow the fruit.
- 9:29Each chapter is divided into 4 sections.
- 9:31So there's the first section is how does the enemy work against
- 9:35our fruit? The second section is how does
- 9:37God view that particular facet of fruit?
- 9:41Because we need to understand his perspective.
- 9:44And I don't know about you, but often my perspective is not the
- 9:47same as God's and I need that reminder.
- 9:50And then once we know how the enemies at work and how God
- 9:54views it, how do we then recover and grow that particular facet
- 9:59of fruit? How do we nurture it?
- 10:00How do we cultivate it? And then finally, how do we
- 10:04share it? Because it's never meant just
- 10:06for us. And so we want to share the
- 10:09fruit. So looking at those 4
- 10:12perspectives of each of the facets or attributes of the
- 10:16fruit of the Spirit, it helps us be aware of what works against
- 10:24our particular in our particular situation, what works against us
- 10:28and how does God want us to respond?
- 10:31And then how do we respond? What are we going to do now?
- 10:34What's our part? And that kind of takes me back
- 10:36to Ephesians 610, right? We're to be strong, but we do it
- 10:41in his might, in his strength. And it's the same with the
- 10:44fruit. This isn't about.
- 10:48And I've done this so many times in my life, you know, I'm going
- 10:51to be more patient if it kills me or I'm going to be, you know,
- 10:55I'm going to, I'm going to exhibit self-control.
- 10:57If this kills me, I'm going to try harder, work smarter, do
- 11:01better. And then of course, 5 minutes
- 11:03later I fail and I fall flat on my face.
- 11:06If this is the fruit of the spirit is not about trying
- 11:10harder, working smarter, doing better, The fruit of the spirit
- 11:14is surrendering to the Spirit. He's the one who is the source
- 11:20of this fruit. Yeah.
- 11:22And in that surrender, then purpose that I am going to make
- 11:27choices that are consistent with that surrender, which is
- 11:32actually kind of sounds contradictory, but it's both.
- 11:36It's my purposing to to choose to live a certain way, but not
- 11:41in my own strength. That's so good.
- 11:44And how is it more easy to be led by the Holy Spirit by
- 11:51filling ourselves with God's word.
- 11:54It's you know, we're going to be walking in the flesh and doing
- 11:58things our way when we're not filling ourselves with God's
- 12:01word. So first we got to feed
- 12:04ourselves his word and that in return.
- 12:08Then we know and that's that's the leading of the Holy Spirit
- 12:11becomes easier and easier as we let his words take root in our
- 12:17heart. So, so good.
- 12:19I love all that you said on that.
- 12:22OK. How would you define a fruitful
- 12:26life in Christ? What role does grace play in
- 12:32cultivating fruitfulness as well?
- 12:36For me, the best description of a fruitful life would be how
- 12:39much am I resembling the Savior? How much am I looking like
- 12:45Jesus? Because these are his
- 12:47attributes, right? These are God's attributes.
- 12:50And his word tells us that his goal is to conform us to the
- 12:57image of Christ, to make us more like Christ.
- 13:00So if you ask me, what does a fruitful life look like?
- 13:04I would say it looks like Jesus and am I day by day, week by
- 13:09week, month by month, year by year?
- 13:12Am I looking more like him? Am I moving in that direction
- 13:19and looking at the 9 facets or the 9 attributes of the fruit?
- 13:24Those are good ways to, for lack of a better word, measure that
- 13:30to be able to say, am I growing in joy?
- 13:32Am I growing in love? Am I growing in being being able
- 13:37to exhibit patience or kindness or self-control?
- 13:43You know, and I think for me it boils down to what do I want in
- 13:48that moment? When I'm in a situation that is
- 13:53causing me to be impatient or less joyful or more self focused
- 13:59and less kind, What is it that I want in that moment?
- 14:05Do I want what I want or do I want to be like Christ?
- 14:10And that's going to be the determining factor in how I
- 14:14respond. I can say I want to be more
- 14:20patient, but in that moment, do I want that or do I want my own
- 14:26way more? Do I want to protect my rights
- 14:30more? You know, that I feel maybe that
- 14:32person is violated or. And so it's always asking that
- 14:36question, which do I want more? And if I want to be more like
- 14:41Christ, that's the moment where I have to be willing to
- 14:47surrender. Yeah.
- 14:49And it's not easy. I mean, well, maybe it's easy
- 14:52for some people. It's not easy for me.
- 14:55But I found that the more I surrender, the easier it gets
- 15:02because I'm now forming that habit or that perspective that
- 15:06values surrender to the Holy Spirit, that in that moment
- 15:12values looking more like Christ than wanting my own way.
- 15:19And believe me, I'm not perfect in that process at all.
- 15:23But it's it, it is a process and it's a way we.
- 15:26Grow Yeah, I, I, I think it was key what you said about your
- 15:31response. I mean, that's what it's all
- 15:33about. You know how many times our knee
- 15:36jerk reaction wants to get impatient or, you know, and and
- 15:41not distribute the fruit of the spirit and and really, if we
- 15:46just stop and recognize how do we want to respond?
- 15:53Guarantee it, it's going to come out in a better way than if you
- 15:57didn't stop and pause and think about that.
- 15:59So it's not being, you know, reactive, I guess the word.
- 16:03It's about being responding, you know, in a way that you were
- 16:09saying Christ like, and you know, what would Jesus be
- 16:13displaying in this moment? And you know, and just knowing
- 16:18that all the, the fruit of the Spirit is already in us.
- 16:22So we're just, we're just yielding to it, like you're
- 16:25saying, surrendering to what's already in place in us that God
- 16:30designed us with when we became believers, when we accepted him
- 16:35as Jesus, as our Savior, Holy Spirit came in, fruit of the
- 16:39Spirit, our inheritance, everything came in and, and
- 16:43dwelled in us. So, you know, I love that you
- 16:47said just recognizing that and and then living it out and
- 16:53having the actions. And and that's important too,
- 16:56because your actions are showing onto others Christ like
- 17:01behavior, which then in return you're being a witness for him,
- 17:06being a light, being the soul of the earth so that they can know
- 17:09him. Yeah, there's so many different
- 17:11facets and different actions that the fruit of the spirit
- 17:15does in our lives. I absolutely love it.
- 17:18So you had mentioned in your book about recognizing and
- 17:22recovering from what the thief has stolen, which we know the
- 17:26enemy is that guy there. Can you collaborate on more on
- 17:31how to identify those losses and reclaim them with biblical
- 17:36principles? I thought this was so good that
- 17:38you touched on this in this. Book.
- 17:40Yeah. And let me clarify.
- 17:42I mean, we, we talk about the enemy's stealing offering.
- 17:47I mean, often I, I think there are books out there that if I
- 17:51remember correctly, one title was, you know, identifying Joyce
- 17:54Steelers. And we need to remember that the
- 17:58enemy can't steal what the Holy Spirit has placed in us.
- 18:02That's right. But it feels like he's stolen
- 18:06them. It feels like our joy has been
- 18:09stolen or our patience has been stolen, and we use those terms.
- 18:12I've heard Christians use those terms.
- 18:15We do need to understand that the enemy can't override what
- 18:20the Holy Spirit plants in us. That's right.
- 18:22But by the same token, he can work to stunt their growth.
- 18:28He can throw up obstacles so that we're not growing the way
- 18:32we should be or the way God is calling us to grow.
- 18:36So that's a struggle. That's really a struggle for us.
- 18:41And I think part of the problem is that often, hate to say it
- 18:46and, and, and I'm guilty of it often the enemy doesn't have to
- 18:51work very hard to steal or stunt the growth.
- 18:54Often I am, if I'm honest. I am cooperating so well with
- 19:01the enemy by giving into temptation, by being distracted,
- 19:05by filling my life with things that I shouldn't have, or by
- 19:10focusing less on spending time with with the Lord or spending
- 19:14time in His Word. The enemy doesn't have to work
- 19:17very hard because I'm cooperating with Him.
- 19:20I'm making it easy to have that fruit stunted and, and to not
- 19:28grow. So, you know, it's not a matter
- 19:31of, oh, you know, comedian years ago used to say the devil made
- 19:35me do it. You know, the, the devil made me
- 19:37do it. Not really.
- 19:38I mean, the devil's always at work in the world.
- 19:42But often I could be my own worst enemy by the choices I
- 19:48make. Yeah.
- 19:49And by what I value, do I value spending time in God's Word?
- 19:53You said it a few minutes ago. You talked about the needing to
- 19:59spend time in God's word because that's where we're going to get
- 20:02the information and the strength and the conviction and the, the,
- 20:06the joy of growing in Christ. So I, I could blame the devil.
- 20:14And how many times do we do that?
- 20:16We do blame the enemy. Or we, we like to feel sorry for
- 20:21ourselves. And what do we say?
- 20:23Well, I'm only human and what do you expect?
- 20:25And I'm not perfect. And Jesus was God and he was,
- 20:28you know, when he walked the earth that he was, he wasn't
- 20:32just a man, He was the Son of God.
- 20:35But I really think that's a cop out because ultimately I am
- 20:40responsible for the choices I make.
- 20:44And again, it goes back to that Ephesians 610, you know, be
- 20:46strong. I have a choice, but yes, I am
- 20:53just human, but I can be strong in in the power of the Lord, in
- 20:59the strength of his might. He doesn't expect me to do this
- 21:03on my own. And that's where the grace comes
- 21:06in. And I'm so grateful for God's
- 21:08grace. I'm so grateful to know that he
- 21:12doesn't just throw me out there in the deep end of the pool
- 21:15without a life preserver and without swimming lessons.
- 21:18And with that, but he's, he's saying, I'm here with you.
- 21:22I'm going to equip you. My spirit dwells within you.
- 21:25My spirit is going to nurture these fruit in you.
- 21:31Yeah, Will, who will you cooperate with?
- 21:35Will you be cooperating with my spirit?
- 21:38Or you just going to make it easy to be distracted and
- 21:41tempted and focus on on things that don't have eternal value?
- 21:49So it's a series. It's a, for me anyway, it's a
- 21:51constant series of choices, but it's not all dependent just on
- 21:57me. And I know that sounds like a
- 21:59contradiction, but that's the way it is.
- 22:02Yeah, I mean, I can't help but think of the verse when Jesus
- 22:06ascended and said, I'm going to leave you the Helper, right,
- 22:11Holy Spirit, you can do greater things than here.
- 22:16You know, the stuff here on the earth that's happening right
- 22:19now. So it's like you can do even
- 22:21greater things now with the Holy Spirit.
- 22:24So what's crazy is when you're talking, I just had this
- 22:29conversation with my husband the other day about how much we give
- 22:35the enemy credit, like how much we give him power, which he
- 22:39really does not, and how much we blame the devil for things.
- 22:46And really, it comes down to what you were just saying about
- 22:50distractions. What are we seeing?
- 22:53What are we hearing? You know, the enemy can just
- 22:55suggest things because he can't read our minds, but he could see
- 23:01what we do in action. But he's not everywhere all the
- 23:05time like God is, right? So it's like if we're, you know,
- 23:12distracted and we're seeing something in our and we're not
- 23:15protecting our eye gates or even our ears, then we're going to
- 23:20start these thoughts, you know, whether it's something we saw
- 23:24that triggered fear in US, right?
- 23:28And like I was telling my husband, you know, you cannot
- 23:32prevent birds from flying over your head, but you can prevent a
- 23:35bird from obviously making a nest in your, in your hair,
- 23:38right? So it's like, are you gonna
- 23:40allow fear the dwelling you or make a home, give it a welcome
- 23:45mat or whatever it is that that triggered, you know, whatever
- 23:50temptation or whatever it was, or are you going to, you know,
- 23:55capture that thought like the verse says, submit it to the
- 24:00word of God. Anything that, you know, cast
- 24:03down all imaginations that go against the knowledge of God,
- 24:07right? And and and captivate, capture
- 24:09that thought and submit it to the word of God.
- 24:12So that's preventing anything to take root in us.
- 24:16But like you said, if we made a choice beforehand and did not
- 24:22choose, you know, to hear that, to see that, to take action in
- 24:27something that wasn't good for us, then, you know, the enemy
- 24:31wouldn't get like, you know, have a little playground, right?
- 24:34You wouldn't have something to work with, right?
- 24:37And so I, I love that you mentioned that because we were
- 24:41just talking about that the other night.
- 24:43What you just shared reminded me of the song that we teach kids
- 24:48and, and, or they used to teach kids in Sunday schools.
- 24:51Be careful little eyes, what you see.
- 24:54And then there's a verse about being careful what you hear and
- 24:58be careful where you go because we often hear and, and watch
- 25:07things that are just not good for us.
- 25:10And we'll open the door to wrong choices later.
- 25:16And you know, we can blame the enemy for that or and we can be
- 25:20honest and say that's on me. I chose in that moment to do
- 25:26something, say something, hear something, go somewhere that I
- 25:30have no business doing. Do you find it amazing how the
- 25:341st is love and how that's just the foundation of them?
- 25:39Absolutely. I mean, if you think about it,
- 25:41how do we show love? OK, Love is it's a relational
- 25:45thing. So how do I show that in my
- 25:47relationships? I show it with joy and peace and
- 25:51kindness and goodness and being faithful and being gentle.
- 25:55And, you know, all of these, these facets of the fruit are
- 26:00actually just ways we display love.
- 26:04Yeah. You know, think of Paul's, the
- 26:07famous love chapter in Corinthians.
- 26:09You know, he talks about love and then what does he do?
- 26:12He goes on to describe it. Love is, you know, patient and
- 26:16gentle and kind and, you know, all of these things.
- 26:19So yes, I, I think even with the fruit of the Spirit, he says the
- 26:24first display or facet is love. But then what does that look
- 26:28like? Yeah, and then they all follow.
- 26:31I love that. OK.
- 26:32I love concluding with a take away something that the listener
- 26:36can't ponder on or take action in.
- 26:39I would say that the biggest take away for me comes back to
- 26:43surrender, comes back to saying asking myself in the moment, in
- 26:49the moment, what do I want more in that moment, whatever the
- 26:55situation is to be able to ask what do I want more in this
- 27:00moment? Do I want to look more like my
- 27:03savior or do I want my way? And if we can learn to stop in
- 27:10that split second and ask that, I think we'll see a huge change
- 27:19in the way we in the way we grow and in the level of our growth.
- 27:26Yeah, Amen. So good.
