- 1:40Dr. Laura Purdy: I am so pleased to welcome Michelle Dore of Tiny Talks Collab, a valued client and partner we've had the privilege of working with since I think October 2024.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:56Dr. Laura Purdy: Wow.
- 1:56Dr. Laura Purdy: Yep.
- 1:57Dr. Laura Purdy: Michelle is building something deeply thoughtful in the aesthetic space, bringing together vision, intention, and a clear commitment to helping people feel more confident in themselves and in the care that they choose.
- 2:11Dr. Laura Purdy: So in today's conversation, we're gonna talk about what it really takes to build a brand and a business that has substance, how trust is created in an industry that depends so heavily on relationships, and why the most meaningful growth often happens from staying grounded in both purpose and people.
- 2:32Dr. Laura Purdy: Please enjoy this conversation with Michelle Doer.
- 2:36Dr. Laura Purdy: Hi! How are you?
- 2:40Dr. Laura Purdy: I'm so happy to be here with you today, Michelle.
- 2:43Dr. Laura Purdy: I know you've popped up a few times.
- 2:45Dr. Laura Purdy: We've done content, we've filmed courses, we've done a lot of stuff together.
- 2:48Dr. Laura Purdy: But for the people that haven't met you and don't know what our relationship is and how it works first, just introduce yourself.
- 2:55Dr. Laura Purdy: Tell us who you are, where you are, what you do, and what we do together, how we know each other.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: So I have been a nurse for over 13-ish years.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: I started in the surgical ICU in Rochester, New York.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Um, ICU critical care, that's my passion.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: I loved thinking critically and using my brain.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Um, unfortunately, as most nurses uh experience, uh I had a lot of burnout and I felt that I couldn't give my patient what they actually needed.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: And it became frustrating because you kind of lose a lot in the ICU.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: When I went on leave, I actually had a surgery that was like the best thing ever for me because it led to short-term disability, which then led me to rethink my career.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: And eight, almost nine years ago, I started with a very small business uh with a doctor who was just starting out in aesthetics.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: I knew nothing about it.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: I was like, eh, I'll try it.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Like it wasn't, it wasn't anything that was like big, as big as it is now, because obviously this market has exploded.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: This industry's so many people that want to do this.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: But started eight years ago, I worked with that doctor for five years, and then I branched out on my own, which is where one day I just googled, and lo and behold, I saw Dr.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Laura Purdy.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: It does work that way.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Who's who's this chick?
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Like, she looks awesome.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, she's pretty rad.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: She plays piano and she was in the army.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Like crazy.
- 4:48Dr. Laura Purdy: And the rest is history, right?
- 4:51Dr. Laura Purdy: The rest is history.
- 4:52Dr. Laura Purdy: The rest is history.
- 4:53Dr. Laura Purdy: And one of the things that I've loved, because we have a pretty big audience that is in the non-physician founder sector, which is you.
- 4:59Dr. Laura Purdy: You're a non-physician founder, and our businesses go into business together.
- 5:04Dr. Laura Purdy: Um, and one of the one of the most important things that I think you have that's different from what your peers have, is that you have always understood that this is a relationship.
- 5:17Dr. Laura Purdy: This is not you off there doing your own little thing and the medical director hiding in the back being not seen, not heard, and not accountable.
- 5:24Dr. Laura Purdy: It's a real relationship.
- 5:26Dr. Laura Purdy: And sometimes I I don't know, I'll actually let you answer that because I know you know a lot of founders, but a lot of times that's almost like an offense to the ego of the non-physician business owner, understanding that the doctor's gotta be involved.
- 5:42Dr. Laura Purdy: A lot of people are offended by that.
- 5:44Dr. Laura Purdy: What what's why are you different?
- 5:46Dr. Laura Purdy: And what's your take on that?
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: So it's kind of interesting.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: What I hear from a lot of nurses that are going into this career, um, and it's around tier two.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: I have uh someone that comes to mind that says, Oh, yes, I have a medical director, but I never talk to them.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: I never see them.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: It's great.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: No.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: And in my right, right, it's not great, it's not great at all.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Because we have to work in our scope of practice.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: And I am extremely compliant, and I wanted to work with someone that wasn't just gonna be like, oh yeah, I'm signing off on your records, and oh, if you have a vascular occlusion, I mean, call me, I may answer.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: No, I need structure.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: I need to know like, who am I calling, when am I calling, are you available?
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Because again, like this is it's it's about, it's not about me.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: It's about client care and delivering excellent and superior care to our patients, whether it's the ICU or whether it's this aesthetic industry.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: If you don't have a relationship with your medical director, what are you doing?
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Like it kind of scares me.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Like, you are a resource to me.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: We bounce ideas off of each other.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: And I'm always like, hey, how about this?
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: And you're like, eh, I don't think so.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: And it's like, you need that, like, and you need that relationship in order to be successful.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Because as we know, bumps do occur along the way, and you and mishaps and adverse events, we don't like them.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: It's not if they happen, it's when they happen and how you deal with them.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: So, how can you deal with it if you don't have a medical director that you don't have a relationship with?
- 7:41Dr. Laura Purdy: I can't imagine, and I can't imagine saying that to the nursing board, right?
- 7:44Dr. Laura Purdy: Like let's say you're an RN and Botox and fillers and microneedling and chemical peels or GLPs or peptides or whatever, whatever it is that your business is doing, the state defines them as the practice of medicine.
- 7:59Dr. Laura Purdy: And no amount of training courses or CEUs or whatever it is that you do as a nurse, none of that makes you a doctor unless you go to NP school and you live in a state where you can be an NP without a doctor.
- 8:10Dr. Laura Purdy: But short of that, yes, getting trained, opening an LLC, having a sign with your business name on it, having an Instagram and being able to order products does not give you the authority to practice medicine.
- 8:25Dr. Laura Purdy: And that's why you have to have a medical director, right?
- 8:29Dr. Laura Purdy: Yes.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: And that's that's why it's like I feel like this industry, it never, we're always fighting to get the respect that we deserve because it is it's medical.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: We are treating people, Botox, filler, these are medications.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Serious things can happen.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: And we need to know how to treat those and be there for our clients.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: So it's so important to have when you start your business, it's so important before you even open your doors to really think about all the boring stuff that you should do first, which is having your SOPs, having your policies and procedures, having your relationship with your doctor, having standing orders, what are we using?
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: How are we using it?
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: Good faith exams, um, and good faiths.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Like we need to have all these things in place before we even lay hands on the client.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: And I I think we're losing that.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: And it's so frustrating because, you know, we are called the Barbie injectors, and it seems like, oh, anyone can do this, and you you don't need to think about what you're doing.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: And that is so not true.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: Because let me tell you, like I like I dealt with uh I had a VO that looked like a suspicious VO.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: And you know, this is someone's face.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: This is someone that comes to you to look and feel better.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: If you do something like that to a patient, you as a as for me, speaking for me, you feel horrible, right?
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: It's not our goal.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: We want to make when we want people to walk out and feel good about themselves.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: But again, a lot of people, why they come to us here too is they know we're compliant, even though we're fun and funky and we have all like our our whole place is just like, you know, uh tigers and prints and you know, neon lights.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: It's fun.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: But behind all of that, they know between myself and my other injector, Serena, the amount of training that's gone into it, the amount of thought and all the ideas that we have and put together and safety and making sure that, like, if anything happens, we are covered.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: And also, I care about my license.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: And you should too.
- 11:00Dr. Laura Purdy: I want to still be a doctor, you want to still be a nurse.
- 11:02Dr. Laura Purdy: We both want to own businesses.
- 11:04Dr. Laura Purdy: Why not follow the laws?
- 11:06Dr. Laura Purdy: Yes.
- 11:08Dr. Laura Purdy: Why do you think so many people in this industry?
- 11:10Dr. Laura Purdy: Because one of the biggest problems I have right now, maybe you can share some wisdom with me.
- 11:15Dr. Laura Purdy: One of the biggest problems I have right now in our business is in the very first conversation I have with people, I tell them about corporate practice of medicine laws, which we follow to a T.
- 11:24Dr. Laura Purdy: We talk about delegation laws, supervision laws, and you and I have been doing this for years, and we follow the laws.
- 11:31Dr. Laura Purdy: More times than not, people are in denial that the rules are real, they don't trust in what I'm saying, and even if I can convince them to go read them, they still don't actually want to follow the laws, even though they can read them right there.
- 11:46Dr. Laura Purdy: Why is that?
- 11:47Dr. Laura Purdy: Help me understand what's going on there.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: You're asking me a question that I ask constantly as well.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: And I don't know if I have the answer to that.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Because what makes anyone feel that they're above the law or above the the CPOM?
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: You know, like what and again, when you do do that, and as especially as a nurse in my position, I I know what it took to get my license.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: I know what I had to sacrifice, the time, the energy.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: If that ever got taken away from me, I don't know what I would do.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: This I being a nurse is my identity, it's part of my identity.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: And unfortunately, there are some rogue injectors out there, uh, which makes it hard because then it those are the people that also bring down our industry, right?
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: Like we lack that respect because of people like that, and we're always fighting to get that respect and to prove ourselves, like, especially with what we do, we really have a lot to prove.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: We really do in in the medicine world, right?
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: We all know I used to walk in, so like I worked with top neurosurgeons.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: And I remember when I switched from you know, surgical ICU to then aesthetic nursing.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: It took me a good couple months.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: People be like, Oh, Michelle, what do you do?
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: And I'm and I would start off with saying, I was surgical ICU nurse with pride.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: And then I said, But I transitioned into aesthetic nursing, you know, and I would kind of not get embarrassed, but just be like, Will they look at me different or that I'm lesser than?
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Um, because again, we don't have that respect like you do as an ICU nurse, and everyone just thinks, ah, it's so easy.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: You just don't have to think, you know?
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: And I'll be I'll be honest, I think this job and what I'm doing is way more stressful than being in the ICU and dealing with someone who's crashing.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: Uh and you have a bunch of people that are there to support you.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: You have your doctors and respiratory therapists and your pharmacists and other nurses and your manager.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Here it is just me.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: It is, you know, a phone call away to Dr.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: Purdy, right?
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Like it's it's a little isolated, it's hard.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: So, um, and you have to be you go home and you think about this job.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: I woke up at 2 a.m.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: this morning because today, as you know, we launched our GFEs, our good faith exam, and it is a big undertaking.
- 14:48Dr. Laura Purdy: And so hold on, hold on.
- 14:51Dr. Laura Purdy: We overhauled our GFE system.
- 14:52Dr. Laura Purdy: We didn't launch GFEs, we've been doing GFEs for years.
- 14:55Dr. Laura Purdy: We switched vendors.
- 14:56Dr. Laura Purdy: Yes.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 14:57Dr. Laura Purdy: Regulators, we've been doing them.
- 14:59Dr. Laura Purdy: We just switched the process.
- 15:00Dr. Laura Purdy: It's an operational thing.
- 15:01Dr. Laura Purdy: Yes, not a compliance thing.
- 15:02Dr. Laura Purdy: Yes, go on.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: So we switched our vendor from Mentscape to obviously you, and also the biggest thing to, especially with owning a business, is streamlining everything.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: Getting a POS system that works for you and makes your job easier and streamlines care for the patient.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: But when you do these things, I always say transition is hard, right?
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: Like it's so hard to initiate a plan.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: But when you get on the other end of it, like I know for a fact after today and after a couple of weeks and then months, this is gonna be the best thing ever.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Like I'm I'm yeah, I'm tired today, I'm dreading today, but I see the light.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: I see the light.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: The light is but again, like you don't know what you don't know.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: And I really wish that when I got the boulevard system for our clinic, that I would have done this the same time, but I'm learning, and that's fine.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: And I'm learning with you as well, which again that goes back to having a relationship with your medical director, like yeah, doing that together, learning, I'm learning, you're guiding me, you've guided me on a lot.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: Like I was, you know, with the whole transfer of care, and I was like, oh, I didn't think about that.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: There's like little things, and so like that's really important to have someone that has that knowledge and that base to guide you through this to better your business, you know, because if I do good, then you do good.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: We all do it.
- 16:36Dr. Laura Purdy: You're older, we all do good and stay out of trouble and sleep at night.
- 16:40Dr. Laura Purdy: Speaking of staying out of trouble and sleeping at night, let's shift ever so slightly.
- 16:45Dr. Laura Purdy: And I'm really glad we're having this conversation because we're gonna throw this out on all the social media channels, and hopefully every injector in America is gonna hear how it can be to have a compliant, responsible medical director relationship.
- 16:57Dr. Laura Purdy: Um, and they will never say, I don't never talk to my medical director.
- 17:01Dr. Laura Purdy: But I want to talk about the wisdom, because this is the I'm Wiser podcast.
- 17:06Dr. Laura Purdy: Let's talk about the wisdom that you have gleaned in your founder journey, because even though you run a medical business, it's the same founder journey that people from all different industries go through when they decide to be an entrepreneur, put their own capital and livelihood on the line, and go start a business.
- 17:24Dr. Laura Purdy: So, what is one piece of wisdom that you would like to ruminate on a little bit with me for the next few minutes?
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: So the biggest thing for me that I had to learn was to trust the people that I hired to do the job that I delegate to them.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: I'm a very type A person.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: I have to control everything, and I fully admit, I have to micromanage everything.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: And I do that a lot.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: And it really actually started to take a toll on my team because if you don't have faith in your team and trust in your team, then it affects their confidence.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: And they're like, I'm not even gonna do this because like Michelle's just gonna redo it anyways, right?
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: And then it becomes a vicious cycle.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: I'm stressed.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: Why isn't anyone doing anything to help me?
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: And then you delegate, and then you're like, well, it's not good enough, it's not to my standards, and I'm just gonna do it anyway, and it becomes this whole cycle.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: So I when when Tarek, my office manager, we've been together for two years now.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: When he first started, I would really micromanage him and it would really irritate him, and then it would be really hard on a relationship, and it was hard to work with one another.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: And it was just like time and time again, it's like, what are we doing here?
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: And the thing about Tarek is that he is honest, brutally honest, and I love that.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: It wasn't always great to hear some of the things he had to say, but like you listen, you know, and you're humble, right?
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: You have to be humble when you when when you're a business owner.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: And we worked through that.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: I started to see the value in him.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: We started to redirect our energy.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: And the biggest thing, the biggest advice that I have to anyone starting is uh when you control something, uh, you think uh that you're like, if I'm controlling it, I got this, I'm gonna do it right.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: The more we try to control things, the more stressed we get, and the more chaotic it becomes and it affects, you think it's just affecting you, but it affects the whole team.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: And uh pretty soon people kind of withdraw, they don't do necessarily as much, or they're afraid they're walking on eggshells.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: We kind of revamped everything in the last like couple months.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: I when I started this, I did not set expectations or goals, um, which then led to frustration because then I was like, why isn't so-and-so here at this time?
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Don't they know they should be here 30 minutes prior?
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: But I didn't set that.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: I didn't set that expectation, and then I just expected people to just know that.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: And that's on me.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: Like I'm a leader, I don't call myself a boss, I call myself a leader, and you can you you lead by example, and it's all about being direct, setting a timeline and things.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: Tarek really taught me that when you when you tell someone do this, give a time of when it must be done, and if it's not met, then you revisit and what needs, what are some of your needs that are not being met, right?
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: It's totally changed our business.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: I've set out clear expectations, clear guidelines, and I feel that everyone is working together more because the more that you control, I can honestly say, and I am so open.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: I'm an open book.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: There was a time, literally months ago, I was like, I don't know if I want to do this.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: This is like my health, it's it's affecting my health, you know.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: Like can relate, by the way.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, you question yourself all the time, right?
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: We're always questioning ourselves.
- 21:40Dr. Laura Purdy: I don't know about that.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: Don't worry.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: When you have really good people like Tarek and Kaylee and Serena, they they they just pluck you down, they bring you down, and then they just, you know, remind you like as to why you're doing it, you know.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: But I just learned that like the more I control, the more.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Stressed, I am, and it does nothing for me, and it does nothing for my employees, and it it's it's totally, you know, um a trickle-down effect.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: And uh, I'm currently reading this book called Let Them by Mel Robbins, which I love, and it's all about because you can't control other people, and you say you kind of say this phrase if someone's doing something, this is a silly example, but your girlfriends go on a trip without you, and you start looking, and you're like, Oh my god, wait, I'm on Instagram.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: Why am I not invited?
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: I should be with Michelle in St.
- 22:35Dr. Laura Purdy: Martin.
- 22:35Dr. Laura Purdy: Just kidding.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: So drink drinking, sipping my ties, FOMO, exactly, but that's a thing, FOMO, right?
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: So, like you just say to yourself, let them, let them, because you can't, they already did it, and it gives you a sense of just like it literally calms you.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: But the other key to it is let me.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: So the let me part is like, what are the actions I'm going to take next to either improve that relationship with my friends or to you know reach out or whatever.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: That's the other part to it.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: So I love my coworker, Serena.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: She works at a different pace than me, and it would literally drive me insane.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: I'm fast, she's slow.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: We are completely opposite.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Which is fine.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: You need it, you need that, actually.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: You you I need it.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: I need it.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: So when I give her a task, sometimes I'm like, why isn't it done?
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: But I just I constantly just say, let her.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: She's doing it.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: Let her, and then let me support her.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: Let me be more patient.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: Sit your butt down, right?
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: Michelle, sit down.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: Don't touch.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: So then parenting yourself.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: Sit down, don't touch.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: That phrase, yeah, exactly.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: Don't touch.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: That phrase and that mindset alone has really helped me to kind of focus on me, focus on my health and well-being to then run a better business.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: And then the then Serena, Kaylee, they have that confidence and they're like, she's letting me do this.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: And then they do it, and then they start gaining more confidence, and then they start doing things on their own that you're like, I didn't ask you to do that, but you did that.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: Like you're so excited.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: That really is the biggest advice that I have and the greatest wisdom.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: I'm going into year three.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: October will be a full three years with you.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Oh, which is cool because you're three years.
- 24:47unknown: Yep.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: 2023 then.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: We yeah, we started this, which is so cool.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: You started this and you were figuring out.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: And I think what's cool about a relationship is we've both been figuring it out together.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: And I know that like there's certain things that you're kind of trying on me, and I'm trying on you, and we're like, okay.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: So then that way, like you, yeah, yeah, you can then implement that on a much larger scale, too.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: So I don't know, I love it.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: It's it's been really life-changing and hard.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: It's very a business is very much like having a baby.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: I don't care what anyone says.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: This is it's all the emotions you have when you have a child.
- 25:32Dr. Laura Purdy: It's loud, it's messy, you can never be prepared for it.
- 25:37Dr. Laura Purdy: It keeps you up at night.
- 25:39Dr. Laura Purdy: Yep.
- 25:40Dr. Laura Purdy: You're always on the hook for everything all the time.
- 25:43Dr. Laura Purdy: Everything, yeah, everything's your responsibility.
- 25:45Dr. Laura Purdy: What am I missing?
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yep.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: It's all of that.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: So, you know, it's not easy.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: It really isn't.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: But if you ask me, would you do it again?
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: I would absolutely say yes.
- 26:04Dr. Laura Purdy: Fine.
- 26:05Dr. Laura Purdy: Fine, yes, I would.
- 26:10Dr. Laura Purdy: Deep breath and yes.
- 26:12Dr. Laura Purdy: Let it go.
- 26:13Dr. Laura Purdy: Yeah, exactly.
- 26:14Dr. Laura Purdy: Okay, well, Michelle, this has been an awesome conversation.
- 26:17Dr. Laura Purdy: I think we're coming up on the end of our time here.
- 26:20Dr. Laura Purdy: But just to recap, number one, we did a little bit of educating.
- 26:23Dr. Laura Purdy: You want to have a good medical director.
- 26:25Dr. Laura Purdy: If you're owning a non-physician-owned clinic like a med spa or an IV hydration business, there is wisdom in a compliant structure and medical director relationship because waiting for the other shoe to drop, waiting for that investigation to happen, waiting for somebody to come and force you to get compliant is no way to live, quite frankly.
- 26:47Dr. Laura Purdy: We don't live that way, and we're glad that we don't.
- 26:50Dr. Laura Purdy: And second of all, here's that big juicy piece of wisdom.
- 26:53Dr. Laura Purdy: If you're a founder and you want to grow, you can never do it alone.
- 27:00Dr. Laura Purdy: You will hit a ceiling.
- 27:01Dr. Laura Purdy: There's only so much Lara Purdy can do.
- 27:04Dr. Laura Purdy: There's only so much Michelle Dore can do because we got to live, eat, sleep, and have one day that comes after another.
- 27:10Dr. Laura Purdy: So if you don't learn how to unhing your business's dependency on you, you're really just freelancing and everybody's kind of working for you, and that's that.
- 27:21Dr. Laura Purdy: But if you build a business that doesn't depend on you, can survive beyond you and without you, and can be passed down or sold or transferred.
- 27:31Dr. Laura Purdy: I mean, it's a whole new world.
- 27:34Dr. Laura Purdy: But first, the wisdom is you gotta let it go responsibly with training, teaching, oversight, follow-up, KPIs, metrics.
- 27:44Dr. Laura Purdy: You gotta manage it just as much as you gotta lead it if you wanna grow it.
- 27:50Dr. Laura Purdy: Yes.
- 27:51Dr. Laura Purdy: Yes.
- 27:51Dr. Laura Purdy: I just made that up.
- 27:52Dr. Laura Purdy: Was that cool?
- 27:54Dr. Laura Purdy: That was actually really good.
- 27:55Dr. Laura Purdy: Is that the tagline?
- 27:56Dr. Laura Purdy: Hey, when let's Winston, let's use that.
- 27:59Dr. Laura Purdy: Uh don't even cut this out.
- 28:00Dr. Laura Purdy: This is say, let's use that on the social media because I like that.
- 28:03Dr. Laura Purdy: Yes.
- 28:03Dr. Laura Purdy: That was a great I like it too.
- 28:05Dr. Laura Purdy: That was a great hook.
- 28:05Dr. Laura Purdy: Well, Michelle, okay, this is your last opportunity to brag on yourself.
- 28:09Dr. Laura Purdy: If we've got audience that's in the Rochester, New York area, tell us where's your business?
- 28:14Dr. Laura Purdy: Where can they find you?
- 28:15Dr. Laura Purdy: What's your website, phone number, Instagram?
- 28:18Dr. Laura Purdy: How can people find you if they or if they are a spa owner and they just want to talk to you?
- 28:25Dr. Laura Purdy: You're very collaborative.
- 28:26Dr. Laura Purdy: You do not see other businesses as competition, and you want to help people feel as peaceful as you.
- 28:31Dr. Laura Purdy: So how do we find you, Michelle?
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: So I'm in Rochester, New York.
