- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Kiss Breakfast. With a hit of celebrity gossip,
- 0:03Speaker 1: what are you following?
- 0:04Speaker 2: We all know Rae by now because she's had huge hits,
- 0:07Speaker 2: but a lot of people don't realise that she's actually
- 0:09Speaker 2: been making music for over 10 years. In fact, when
- 0:12Speaker 2: we used to work on the other radio station together, Mikey,
- 0:15Speaker 2: we were playing her songs before anyone knew who she was.
- 0:18Speaker 3: What other songs?
- 0:20Speaker 2: She had a song called You Don't Know Me with
- 0:21Speaker 2: Jax Jones.
- 0:22Speaker 3: You don't know me.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Nope.
- 0:25Speaker 3: You don't know me.
- 0:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 0:30Speaker 3: And she also songwrites for people as well.
- 0:32Speaker 1: So a bit like Zara Larsson is she like had
- 0:35Speaker 1: a few hits, but no one really knew. And then
- 0:37Speaker 1: she became bigger. Is that kind of?
- 0:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I mean, she kind of blew up when she dropped
- 0:42Speaker 2: Prada first, like five or so years ago.
- 0:44Speaker 3: But Where Is My Husband was like the biggest, most
- 0:46Speaker 3: recent one. Did she do Prada? Yeah. Oh, that was
- 0:49Speaker 3: a collab with a few people, right? I think so.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Wow.
- 0:52Speaker 2: So, yeah, in this new interview, she recounts the day
- 0:55Speaker 2: that she signed her very first record deal, which you
- 0:58Speaker 2: think would be the happiest.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Moment in a singer's life, right?
- 1:02Speaker 2: It's like they finally got their big break and a signing,
- 1:05Speaker 2: you know, and they're going to be famous and make
- 1:06Speaker 2: all this money. But it wasn't for her. And she
- 1:09Speaker 2: explains why it wasn't the happiest day of her life.
- 1:12Speaker 3: You know what?
- 1:12Speaker 4: My signing day was a bit of a mess. I
- 1:14Speaker 4: was drying my tears. What happened?
- 1:17Speaker 1: I've met with a huge music.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Executive who promised me the sun and the stars. There's
- 1:23Speaker 4: an artist I'm a super fan of. They said to me,
- 1:26Speaker 4: we played this artist your music and they've agreed to
- 1:29Speaker 4: endorse you. I'm literally like, are you joking?
- 1:31Speaker 1: What?
- 1:32Speaker 4: Like, I'm literally like... my life's gonna change, I've made it.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Basically the idea was it was supposed to be a
- 1:38Speaker 4: collaborative deal between the UK and the US. This big
- 1:43Speaker 4: music executive calls me and he's like, you can't sign
- 1:46Speaker 4: this contract. And I'm like, what do you mean? I'm
- 1:49Speaker 4: 17 years old, I'm in a session. And he's like,
- 1:51Speaker 4: you can't sign it, if you sign it then I'm
- 1:54Speaker 4: gonna step back, I'm gonna withdraw my, like it was
- 1:56Speaker 4: so cold to rug under my feet. If I didn't
- 2:00Speaker 4: sign my record deal, in the Universal Building that evening,
- 2:03Speaker 4: the contract was gonna be withdrawn. I was literally stood
- 2:06Speaker 4: outside the Universal Building in floods of tears with my parents,
- 2:09Speaker 4: either side of me. I was like, I don't know
- 2:11Speaker 4: what I'm gonna do. Like, I don't wanna miss my shot.
- 2:14Speaker 4: I don't wanna waste my shot. I don't wanna be stupid.
- 2:16Speaker 4: I don't wanna make the wrong decision. um so i
- 2:19Speaker 4: went into the building and signed the contract ah.
- 2:21Speaker 1: She did okay yeah well it'd be full on for a.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Young girl yeah but also you hear of so many
- 2:26Speaker 2: bad record deals like taylor swift's back in the day
- 2:29Speaker 2: where she didn't own the rights to any of her
- 2:30Speaker 2: music and that's why she's re-recorded it and stuff like
- 2:32Speaker 2: that so there's a lot of people who just sign
- 2:35Speaker 2: because they get so excited by the fact that they're
- 2:37Speaker 2: getting a record deal that they actually sign away a
- 2:40Speaker 2: lot of their rights well who was it.
- 2:42Speaker 1: The other week was it n-sync we were talking about
- 2:44Speaker 1: they're only He paid $ 30 or something.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Oh, they got $ 30 per diem a day. It's Jojo
- 2:48Speaker 2: that had, like, leave, get out, and she disappeared. It's
- 2:51Speaker 2: because she didn't own any of her music as well,
- 2:53Speaker 2: and her record label decided, we're not going to fund
- 2:55Speaker 2: another album, but we've got you locked in for 10 years,
- 2:57Speaker 2: so she can't do anything.
- 2:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:59Speaker 1: People get ripped, especially the young ones that don't know
- 3:01Speaker 1: what they're doing.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Yeah, it's very important to have- You're not getting, like,
- 3:03Speaker 3: legal advice and stuff.
- 3:05Speaker 4: No, no.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Yeah, very important to have good lawyers.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Also, Alex Warren, obviously, Mikey, you loved his show. You went.
- 3:10Speaker 3: You got free tickets.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Brilliant. I watched Ordinary. He did that well.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Actually, I love his music. Did you not go to
- 3:16Speaker 3: his show?
- 3:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I went.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Sure.
- 3:19Speaker 3: What was the final song he performed?
- 3:21Speaker 1: Ordinary. He did Fever Dream as well. Yeah, what was
- 3:24Speaker 1: the first song?
- 3:25Speaker 3: You're just naming songs he's got.
- 3:27Speaker 1: First one. He started with Ordinary and ended with it.
- 3:30Speaker 3: I know you do genuinely like it. You didn't go
- 3:32Speaker 3: to his show, don't lie.
- 3:33Speaker 2: I did.
- 3:33Speaker 1: You got free tickets and everything? You got free tickets.
- 3:34Speaker 3: You didn't go.
- 3:35Speaker 2: But I do know you genuinely like Ordinary because you
- 3:38Speaker 2: love a choir.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Oh, my God, yeah.
- 3:40Speaker 3: I love a choir too.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Oh, like Madonna like a prince. Love.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Yas queen.
- 3:47Speaker 2: So yeah, Alex Warren has revealed the really weird thing.
- 3:50Speaker 2: He doesn't mind signing for fans.
- 3:53Speaker 3: And it's not tits before you ask.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Bottoms. Not bottoms.
- 3:58Speaker 2: No body parts actually. So if you don't know, Alex
- 4:00Speaker 2: Warren had a really tough upbringing. So his father passed
- 4:03Speaker 2: away when he was quite young. His mother suffered with
- 4:07Speaker 2: alcoholism his whole life and passed away five years ago.
- 4:10Speaker 2: And he was homeless in his teen years.
- 4:12Speaker 3: He was living in cars from around 17 years old.
- 4:15Speaker 2: His now wife actually lived in cars with him while
- 4:18Speaker 2: he was trying to make it in music. So he
- 4:20Speaker 2: was talking about the fact that because of his parents
- 4:22Speaker 2: passing and he understands what that's like, he now doesn't
- 4:26Speaker 2: mind signing.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Other people's ashes.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Oh, like an urn.
- 4:30Speaker 2: So apparently fans will bring their dead parents to his
- 4:33Speaker 2: show and put the ashes in like an urn or
- 4:35Speaker 2: even a bag and they'll bring them and ask if
- 4:37Speaker 2: he can sign it.
- 4:38Speaker 3: And he said he doesn't find it weird. It doesn't
- 4:40Speaker 3: make him uncomfortable. In fact, he loves it.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Yeah, because he, like, and I did interview him, right?
- 4:44Speaker 1: And he talks about.
- 4:46Speaker 3: His- So you didn't even go to his show after
- 4:47Speaker 3: you interviewed him?
- 4:48Speaker 1: I did go to his show, but I, you know-
- 4:49Speaker 1: Stop lying. And he gave me the free tickets during
- 4:52Speaker 1: the interview. Oh, and you didn't go to his show.
- 4:54Speaker 1: What are we talking about? Like his parents, his dad
- 4:56Speaker 1: passed and- If you've got that kind of relationship or
- 5:00Speaker 1: understanding of death when it's happened to you a lot,
- 5:03Speaker 1: you would sign the Astros, wouldn't you?
- 5:05Speaker 3: What's your thoughts on cremation?
- 5:07Speaker 1: I want to be buried. Actually, no, I want to
- 5:08Speaker 1: be stuffed and put on the couch so my wife
- 5:12Speaker 1: always has to remember me. Oh, what's that called? Taxidermy.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Oh, taxidermy. That's what's going to happen to me. I
- 5:18Speaker 3: want to be cremated and put in a firework.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Firework? Yeah.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Did you hear? Wasn't it? Who smoked?
- 5:24Speaker 1: Tupac.
- 5:25Speaker 2: No.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Tupac's mum smoked his ashes.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Yes.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:28Speaker 3: In a joint.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Ryan could do that. He could smoke you.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Smoke me? No, thank you. We like smoking meat. You
- 5:34Speaker 3: could be a seasoning on his smoked meat. I could
- 5:37Speaker 3: be a rub. I'll be a rub. I'll be a rub.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Get the rub out, son. Let's put mum on the pork.
- 5:46Speaker 3: We'll cover these ribs in mum.
