- 0:00SPEAKER_02: In this episode we are talking the taboo subject of Olympic selection.
- 0:05SPEAKER_02: We are going to have a little um prediction for Olympic medals, very Olympic heavy, and we are obviously going to go into the coupe with more of Yupe's quality chicken chat.
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: See you next time.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: It's episode five of Let's Stick Together brought to you by Y Wan.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: Before we got started, I just wanted to touch on something um fairly serious.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Ed Hunnebel got in touch with uh Let's Stick Together and he was promoting his GoFundMe page for his friend Will, who has recently been diagnosed with testicular cancer.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: Um and his friends are running a half marathon to raise money as well as shaving their heads to support their mate.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: We're gonna put this link on our Instagram page.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: We just want to say that you know uh uh we're sending our best wishes from Lestick together to Will.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Really hope that his chemo goes well.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: And um he's got a great set of mates who are doing all they can to raise money for you know a great cause.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: So please pass on the word uh about donating the the GoFundMe page, and of course, we wish him all the best for his recovery.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: And on to some news.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: First of all, this is a bit of a bit of a complete change, but um on the Let's Stick Together Instagram page, and uh my Instagram has been heating up this week because Real Hockey, the Instagram account, decided to uh tag me uh absolutely stacking it last summer, and it just has been decided that about 50 people have sent me the reel of me falling over.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: And uh it's also been sent to Let's Stick Together quite a lot of time.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: So thank you for everyone who's done that.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: You're looking confused like he hasn't seen it, so that's gonna be fun.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: I've had it sent to me as well, which is even better because I don't know why anyone sent it to me, but okay.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: I haven't seen it.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: What's that called Real Hocky anyway, Brendan?
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: While Yup's looking at it, how are you?
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm tired, mate.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: I'll be honest with you.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: I am I am sore and tired.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, training's been ramped up.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: I've been rehabbing for a bit um and just trying to get back to full fitness, but with that, it's been pretty full on without really much rest.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I'm pretty like cooked, if I'm honest.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: Um, a nice welcome rest day tomorrow, which I am definitely taking with both hands.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: How are you, mate?
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: Oops, just seeing the reel.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: Sorry, I'm gonna get it.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: I know, it's grinning in the background.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: With a little cat here.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: Some of the comments are great as well.
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: It's like, why doesn't he use this stick?
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: And then it's like Harbin Prix's amazing.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: I love Harman Priet.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: Fucking social media, piss off.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: I did Google.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: It's a it's a 9.5 out of 10 for a good dive.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: Uh you how are you?
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: Uh big news for OR.
- 3:09SPEAKER_02: Obviously, I'm I hope you're good, but OR have made the playoffs and it's huge.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it is kind of huge.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Um it's been it's been the yeah, thank you, Brendan.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Well done to you.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Uh in all fairness, I think it's been the first time in six years, I believe, that we reached playoffs.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Um, it's been a been a long time coming.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Um now we finally got there.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: That's what she said as well.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, uh, it was it was a really tough game because we played Schaweide uh away, which we drew last year, and it looked for uh 59 and a half minutes like we were gonna draw again.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: And then uh the the the worst chance we had, it actually went in.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: We had their goalie was incredible.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: I think he I want to say had the day of his life, but he's just a really good goalie, apparently.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: Um, because last last year it was the same.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: He took everything out of the net, and it was uh it it got really on my nerves, and I got really annoyed by it.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Uh, and at a certain point, I I had to make an interception in my own corner.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: It yeah, I I I like intercepted the ball, but it went over our own back line.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: And I looked at the clock and I saw uh two minutes left, and I thought, hmm, next week Blumenthal.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: So I was already there, and then uh it wasn't even a chance.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Uh Sheldon Schouter, he he slapped the ball as hard as he could.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Thibaut Stockbrooks might have put his stick on it, but we're not even sure.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: And the ball goal, and uh we won, and uh history is made.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: We've made the playoffs uh again after six years, so yeah, it was a good weekend.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Disgusting, disgusting claiming goals that aren't goals, horrible.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: I to be honest, I I did really think he touched it.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: No one from from Schaweyde really um complained, and Thibault was really uh really uh yeah persuasive in how he in how he how he cheered, if that makes sense.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: So so I I I didn't doubt it, and then after the game, someone asked, Did Thibaut, did you actually touch it?
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: And he said, Yeah, I don't know, which is probably a sign that he didn't touch it, to be honest.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: So, but you know what?
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: I don't give a shit.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: We're we're in playoffs, uh it's been a while.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: That 100% means he didn't touch it, by the way.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: We know we're honest.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: I did think why were they weren't complaining because even from the camera angle, which wasn't great, it didn't look like the ball got touched, but he went up so so like adamantly that yeah, fair enough.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: But I mean huge news.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: It did get touched multiple times, but like I don't know if Tibet touched it.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: Okay, nice.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: And uh yeah, we we we're gonna go straight.
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: Actually, no, there's some something else in the Dutch league that I wanted to touch on.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: There's a there's a chance now, which is pretty crazy stat for the men's side is that Pinake have won the European Hockey League, and there's a chance they're not gonna make the playoffs now in Holland, which I would say is also a good fun stat to have on your resume.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: That that happened with Blumendal, didn't it?
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: The other like two, three, like three, four years ago, two, three years ago.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: Oh really?
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Blumendal Blumendal won the HL, then didn't qualify for the HL the following year, but then won the the league.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: I think it was.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: No, you're mixing it up a bit, but it was I it was a year in which Blumenadel uh didn't make EHL, but they won the EHL that year.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: They they got fourth in the league, so they reached payoffs.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Then they it was six years ago, and then they played against I think even against us, and we played forward EHL spot, and then we won against Blumenel.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Oh, but yeah.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: I mean it's more recent than that.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Pinocchio is probably not not making of probably not making.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: There's a there's a there's a big chance Pinocchio is not making it right now, uh, because they're uh equal in uh points with Rotterdam.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, but Rotterdam has a has won more games.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Uh it's like the exact reason we didn't make playoffs last year.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: We had the same exact same points as Pinocchet, but they won a game more and we drew more.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Uh so Pinoquet is a bit in the same uh position right now.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Uh Pinocchet plays uh Campong this weekend.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: If they lose, they're it's been settled.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: If they win, they need Rotterdam to drop one or two points.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: If they win against Campong, we play the final game of the season against Campong.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: If we then win against Campong and Pinoquet wins twice, Pinoquet gets in, so it's a big, yeah, it's a big thing, but Pinocchio probably won't make it.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Jesus, thanks for the monologue, mate.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: Jesus Lord.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Well, you know what?
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: I didn't even want to talk about Pinoquet, but still brought it up.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: So shut the fuck up, Brendan.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: You talk about you, you bring up some stupid thing about the Masters again.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: I was actually gonna say that the Skowida goalkeeper looks a little bit like McLovin.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: That's that was my offering for anything.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: He his nickname in under 21s, I think, was even McLovin.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was I think that was partly due to us because we kept calling him McLovin because he was my age group.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, fair.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, just to end the pinnacle thing, I mean it again just probably shows that normally how how strong that Dutch league is that they can win the EHL and not actually make it.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: But also, Brent, you want to bring up the snooker?
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: You interested in that at the moment, or are you okay?
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: I haven't watched any of the snookers, sadly.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: Okay, fair enough.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: You look confused.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, I'm a bit annoyed that Brendan doesn't want to talk about the whole class saying, Well, all we do every week is talk about your stupid league, which no one watches and no one even cares about.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, let's talk about the pizza.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Oh, Jesus, not got his pizza this week and he's fucking miserable.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the old kebab pizza, yeah, decent, mate.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, nice one.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: This is a really good question, actually.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: I've just read it.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: Is Sam Peoples messaged in before we get onto the real real topics saying which field hockey player would be the best backup goalkeeper?
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: Have we done this before?
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: EG like like a major tournament like the Olympics when you can't have a backup goalie.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: Who's who's who's stepping up?
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: Because we know in our team it's um we've done it before where Brendan or Wardie kits up and uh put their put you know put their name forward as the two biggest morons in the team outfield us, and uh we get a chance to whack balls at them.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: But you have you ever done this?
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: We've done it before Rio, uh, but haven't done it before Tokyo.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: And back then, Son de Bach did it, and he was actually quite good.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: Uh I don't know who would do it now.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: Um, like if we go off the biggest moron, I think I'm also in contention.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Um, but you need some, I think like a flawless water bull would be really good at it.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you also need to be quite brave, you are you are you really the one talking, Phil?
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: You also need to find kit that fits the lankiest man in the world.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: I feel a lot of abuse coming by within within the first five minutes of this podcast, and I'm not really used to it.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: I thought the whole shtick here was that we we poke fun at Brendan, not me.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: Sorry, sorry.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: Tough to find an extra large extra large pads with an extra small box.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: It's tough, you it's tough.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: Brendan, what's your deal?
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: You're doing season five.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: Season five is new, Brendan, by the way.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: I don't understand what's going on.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: Oh, you've got fire as many shots as you take, aren't you?
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: It's season six, and yeah, shut up, Phil.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: I refuse to take to take shit from someone who has a man bun still.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: That is fair.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: Sorry, you but you yeah, I did I was desperately thinking then in your Dutch team who would be putting the kit on.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: But I think a lot of people would be like doing the whole like scratch their head and look the other way and hope to god that no one asks them.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think Wittle would really want to.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: That I genuinely can see him like grinning, being like, put me in the pads, put me in the pat.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: I don't think like he has he does have like touch, but I don't know if you need touch as a goalie.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: So I I don't know.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: I don't know, like uh Brinkman, the rugby brinkman, the the the halfback.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: Rugby Brinkman, yeah, like lesser, like shitter Brinkman.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: That's fair.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: Come on, that's not even that's not even having a dig.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: We all know that there's number one Brinkman and number two Brinkman.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: I didn't say nothing.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: That's gotta be tough being the number two Brinkman.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: Do you know what I mean?
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: Like being second, just being second.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: Hey number two, hey number two.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: That's gotta be tough.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: You've lost.
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: Sorry, right.
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: You we'll go back to square one.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: I'll make a pact, only poke fun at Brendan.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: Okay, cool, good deal.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: No, I'm I'm I'm okay.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: I just like I don't know what you want me to say, but just bring on like he's a teammate of mine, he's a solid player.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: What what should I say?
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's no there's no we're not saying he's not.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: No, we're bringing about fucking goadies for way too long.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: So do your next little uh little uh uh news thingy.
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's great when we get someone on the closet early doors, right?
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: We're all on the closet, yeah.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: This is um this is a bit of a taboo subject, but um I pitched it to the other two and they're okay with it, so we're gonna try and go with this.
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: We're we're trying to become more of an insightful podcast, uh I guess.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: Uh the elephant in the room is that we're less than three months away and the Olympics is coming up.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: All three of us are going for it.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: All three of us don't know if we're gonna get picked or not.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: Um and we thought we'd just maybe talk about it a little bit, like get some insight, maybe provide a little bit of insight for once.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: Um, but just I guess as a bit of a background, is that me and Yupa are attempting to go to um are in our third like Olympic cycle.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: Uh I think we both went for Rio and didn't make it, and then both went for Tokyo and did make it.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: Brendan is has a a hundred percent success rate.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: Uh he he went for Tokyo and he went and he got into Tokyo.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: Um Brendan, you you don't look happy about that.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: No, no, fine.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Uh I'd I'd say I I pulled myself out of uh the Rio cycle.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: I was in part-time and they tried to convince me to stay in, giving me the slimmest of slim chances to go, and I pulled myself out thinking it's not worth it, and went abroad.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: So, but yeah, um on on Olympic selection, I'm doing okay.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: If you include World Cups, not so great.
- 13:32SPEAKER_02: Are we allowed to say you love a holiday to India now?
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: Or is it I fucking love a holiday to India?
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: Get me back out there.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Tell you what, sign me up for the Indian Hockey League.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: Don't play me, just keep me out there.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: I love going.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: Anything for a butter chicken and some naan.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: I'm in.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: You imagine the Indian owners going, it's Creed, he's got a great reputation as being a great guy on these trips.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: Two trips to India, three trips to India, one I played in, the other one I shat myself in.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: Fantastic news, great stuff.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: What a what a time to be alive.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, I guess I was gonna touch on the fact that it works a little bit different Olympic section compared to everyone else.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: It's it's much more official.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: Um, there's like a a release date where they tell us, and then there's the like official uh release date that like the uh big I don't know what they would call it, team GB would say for our case, we're gonna we're gonna release it.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: Um we we get sent a mental amount of stuff about it, uh, which is which doesn't help the like the nerves or the or the or the thinking about it because we got sent a couple of weeks ago a selection document for policy and procedures, which is great fun.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you gets this, but it's like it's got in it object, it's basically how you get picked, uh, but it's like objectives, eligibility, framework criteria, parameters, process, and then appeals.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: So it's got a huge document saying, you know, like you can even appeal if you don't get picked, basically, which is a bit mental, isn't it?
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: I don't know if anyone's ever done that.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: You just get picked or you don't.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: You cry about it in your own house and you go on with your life.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: That's how we deal with it.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: Not like you Brits where you have like all these things, stupid things.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think you'll find if you go to 13 subsection 2C, you'll find that that extreme.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: I am hitting the parameters said.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: Well, I I do think it'd be quite funny though if you appeal for selection where you don't make it, and then you're just desperately trying to get picked for something the coach clearly doesn't want you there at.
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: I don't know, I don't know what what headspace you've got to be in to to appeal.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: I I do think if you're like an Olympic swimmer or something that's a bit more objective in getting picked or not, yeah.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: Like I think it's more set for that instead of like, let's be honest, no one really gives a shit about hockey in the sports world.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: So they probably don't think about us when they when they set up those rules.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Um so I think it's more about that.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: We are we we have like uh this amazing person called Tessa, and she fixes everything for us.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: So she only says to us, yeah, here's a document, sign it.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: You're you are allowed to read it, but I choose always just to be just to be sure to not read it and just sign.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: Um, and that's like how it goes with us.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: Okay, nice.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, also I guess the thing to point out with the Olympics is that for the whole of our four years, it's always you pick 18 and 18 can play, and then for an Olympics it's 16, and you have two reserves and a goalie.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: Like, should they just change that?
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: Should we just all all selections be 16 or 18?
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well then Brendan Brendan and I are in a bit of a pickle because if if even the World Cups go to six, then we sure stop going.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's tough.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: I don't I like the holidays to India.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: Stop trying to take them away from me, Phil.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: It doesn't make any sense though.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: It is crazy though, isn't it?
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: That it's the only tournament where it gets smaller.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: And it's the most intense like I know it's the pinnacle and this, that, and the other, but like it is the only tournament.
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you've got to be fitter.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: It doesn't make any sense.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: Like it almost changes the game.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: The fact that you you you get more rest for the rest of the tournaments and then you go and it's 16 and you're suddenly like, shit, I've got to run around more, I've got to be fair.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: No, you're frowning.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you don't get more rest.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: You play four games in the first five days.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: That's what we said, that's what we're saying.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: That's what in a normal tournament you get more rest.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: Oh, in a normal tournament, I thought in Olympics you get more rest.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: No, yeah, yeah, it's but it's the biggest event in the world, and I think it's also has to do with um capacity.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: That's why the reserves are not in the in the village, but they're outside of the village.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: This year they're in the village.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: What the reserves and the reserve goalkeeper are in the village this year.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: You sure?
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: For every team.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think so.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: It's definitely for us.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: Just Team GB was special.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: You guys are special, not in a good way, but you you are special, but um I don't know.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Uh you sure?
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: Our 17th and 18th were in last time for Tokyo, but our goalkeeper was outside, but this year our goalkeeper's inside.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: But last time our 17th and 18th were not in the village in Tokyo.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: Might just be us then.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it's just you guys.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: That's interesting.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: I thought it'd be for everybody.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: No, it's because it's because you guys are so special, you're not even part of any continent.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: You're like you're on all on your own.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: Now give it away.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: You guys make a make your own rules a little bit.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: You're also the big time.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: Only country that's not really a country, because you're like six countries combined, which is also fucking bullshit, by the way.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: You guys just get to add for Olympics, get to add anything you want, and you get Scots, Wills, whatever.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: You can you can just add it because it's Olympics.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: It's fucking bullshit.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: What's your take on this?
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: Because I'd actually be intrigued.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: Would you to you does it make more sense for us just always be England or always be Great Britain?
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: Or like do you think it's stupid?
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, make up your fucking mind and choose something, or be one country, or don't.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: But don't whenever it whenever you feel uh that that it shoots you, you you you you become one country.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: That's fucking bullshit.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: Also choose, are you in Europe, out Europe, are you Brexit or not?
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Are you England or Great Britain?
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: Mate, you can just join with them.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, fuck you.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: We don't want Luxembourg.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Hey, the world would be in trouble if we if we combine with Belgium though.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that that wouldn't be an enjoyable one.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: Uh to be honest, I would be in trouble as well.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: Um, let's try and go back to a little bit of the serious stuff.
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: What what you give me your like your like timeline or your biggest learnings and and what what you did the first time and what you're gonna do this time mentally.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: Well, it's this will turn out to be a monologue if you don't stop me.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: So okay, so first time in 2016, I wasn't really um you say I did a full Olympic cycle, I actually did six months before the Olympics.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: I joined 2015 in December.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: I made my debut, so I wasn't really expecting to make Rio.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: Uh everything that I played was like a bonus to me, and then the the closer I got to Rio, the more shit I started to play because I thought holy fuck, I can actually go to my first Olympics, and I was like 20.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: Um, so how much of a moron I am now uh think back eight years, how big of an idiot I was back then.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: So I didn't make it, I think rightfully so.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: Uh and then for Tokyo, uh was yeah, uh was yeah, I was a bit weird with corona and everything, like with COVID.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: It was like yeah, it was such a weird process.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: I kind of also kind of deleted the whole Tokyo uh thing, uh the whole Olympics.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: I didn't really I never really think about it anymore.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: I kind of yeah, kind of deleted from my head, but I know we had like a it was a weird summer in which we first played Europeans.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Uh I actually had a good season with OR, and uh I was being told I should play more on the sides and be more of an attacking right half, uh, which went pretty well.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: And then in Tokyo, uh yeah, went quite shit.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: Uh and now I don't know.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've got I got so I got as everyone knows, and as we had spoken about in the podcast, I got dropped for the 2022, 2023 World Cup.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: I think it was 2023.
- 21:37SPEAKER_02: 2023.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: So yeah, so that was like the last uh big disappointment, um, which kind of put me on edge, but in a good way.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: Um I actually uh I think the whole mental process of uh selections and stuff is pretty underrated and really uh being shoved under the under the rug a little bit.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: Um so I actually went, I think, half a year ago.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: I actually went and talked, uh started speaking to somebody.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: Like it's not not like a big deal, but like uh uh you say like it's not yeah, it's kind of a psychologist, but like a sports psychologist, someone to just chat to a little bit and uh speak a little about the whole process of um of like uh performing.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: And I think that that that helps me pretty well because I haven't really thought about selection a lot in the last couple months.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: Uh I think that's that's the best thing that can happen to you.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: Uh, I'm not not saying that I feel secure of my spot or anything, because I don't think I will ever feel secure of my spot after everything that that has happened, but I feel like I'm coping with it better.
- 22:41SPEAKER_02: It's also changing the way that you actually look at it, isn't it?
- 22:44SPEAKER_02: Like if you if you're looking forwards instead of backwards, I was fine.
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: I found that quite um successful in terms of like you're looking towards um helping your team and and winning medals as opposed to looking behind you and saying, oh, who else is playing well?
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, I feel that's that's the that's something I think uh every well I'm not speaking about like the elite of the elite, so I probably don't think like the ton of noyers of this world uh were looking at other people, how they were performing, more in a way they were more looking more at the team.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: For me, it now kind of helps to to really focus on just myself and trying to be like that.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: I can it's really it's a really cliche but that I can in and at the end of the run look in the mirror and and and say to myself, okay, at least I did everything I could to make the selection and go to the Olympics.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: And I also find myself worrying right now more about the result at the Olympics than making the Olympic selection, even though I still feel that I'm not not safe and I'm not uh or safe, no one is safe like that.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: I'm that I'm that I could easily get dropped.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I still find myself because I'm so trying to like um make it, but I'm also starting to think, yeah, I don't know if it makes sense, or make think more about how can we win gold, if that makes sense.
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Brendan, what's your what's your take on this?
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: Where where do you sit?
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: I'm pretty similar, to be honest.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: Um I've I've out of the big three, about out of the big two tournaments, I'm only successful one out of three of them.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: So obviously both World Cups, I've kind of sat on the sideline and watched the tournaments.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: Um it's been pretty frustrating from that point of view, like mainly because I actually want the team to like do as well as they can when I'm not there.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: That makes sense.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: So like to justify selection a bit, and if it does, if it if they don't do well, then it frustrates me more.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: Um so for me, like I've just tried to get into my headspace of basically similar to you.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: Like, if I do everything I can and I get picked, then obviously I want the team to do well.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: And if I do everything that I can and I don't get picked, I want the team to do as well as they can.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Like, it's that kind of mindset of if I'm doing everything I can, it's gonna put one, the team in a better place.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: It's gonna put me in a better place as an individual as well.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: Um, I'll be honest with you, I've no idea when our selection is, and I'm quite happy that I don't know when it is.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: I don't really want to be, I know there's a few guys in the squad that have talked about the date and like they've been counting down the days or the night, this, that, and the other.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: But for me, that's not the way I want to look at it.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: I want to look at it as like enjoying each day that I've got and kind of going at it that way um and just maximizing the time that I've got.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: Um I would say what's the I think the weirdest thing that I found with the selection, especially Tokyo selection, was the fact that we had two emails come out on the day for one for Euros, one for the Olympics.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: And like, if it's not first thing in the morning, I think that day is one of the toughest days to like get your head around because you're just waiting on an email or waiting on two emails.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: So, like last time I remember I played golf with Gooders, and I I said to him, I was like, I don't really want to sit on my ass and just wait all day for this email.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: Like, let's go and because I've we've known each other for what 15, 16 years.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: I was like, look, if we go and do something together, like we can take our mind off it, go play golf or whatever, and it'll the email will come through at some point.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: And as we were walking down the 18th, both emails came through.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: And obviously for me, I got selected for both with gooders.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: You only got selected for the Euros, didn't get selected for the Olympics.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: And it was like actually really I think it was I think for him it was really good, but for both of us, I felt it was really good because it was like you can actually sit and talk and digest it.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: Because I think they're quite like hard things to do on your own.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: I think they're quite hard when you're potentially with people that don't necessarily understand as much.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: Um like I I just wanted to just kind of keep myself busy beforehand because I think it is such a mentally tough day just waiting on an email that kind of like depicts your four-year cycle.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: I think it's quite a unique thing.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: Um, and especially as you said before with like the selection stuff, when when it's subjective, like it's someone's choice, like decision on whether you get picked or not.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: It's very different to like hitting a time in like swimming or hitting a time in cycling where it's like, yeah, I've set the world leading time, I'm obviously gonna go.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: Whereas ours, it's like it is just a case of I like the fit of these guys, and this is the this is the group that I want to go with.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: I think it's quite a different thing.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: It's quite hard to like, I think, understand the story.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: I've started yeah, I've started thinking it's like quite natural that you're gonna think about it, that it's like gonna be on your mind occasionally.
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: And I've started like giving myself a a small window to talk with like one person about it and like almost call it like a sa we we used to call it like a sapuccino, so it's like a case of like you're going for a vent, you're going for to say all the stupid shit that's going on in your head, and then you like as soon as the the sappuccino is over, it's done.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: So like you play the stupid game where you're like, oh what's the coach thinking?
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: And then and then when that's done, that always like relieves the the the thoughts that are going around in your head because they're obviously there.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: Um I also like the whole like I mean I'm gonna annoy you both, but like I'm blessed with um an amazing amount of perspective.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: Um so the last few times of selection, I haven't even seen it because I've been so caught up with what's going on in my own house of trying to stay afloat and um keep my head above the water and keep keep uh keep myself alive and not being attacked by two children.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: Um and also like it doesn't it it's not the it doesn't matter as much to me anymore as it used to.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: And that may sound bad, but um that actually releases me and frees me up to to play better, I think, when I don't think it's as important as it was.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: Like the first time I got it all wrong, just thought about it way too much, tried to be someone I wasn't, and then suddenly like learning from that, you're like shit, like what was I doing?
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: Why didn't I just like say fuck it and play my own game, do my own thing, and if they like that, they like that.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: If they don't, they don't.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: I think that's like such a healthy, such a healthy place to be.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: I actually spoke to our psych, our psych about it out in uh Oman for the qualifiers.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm I feel I'm in that headspace now where I'm like my game adds to the group, so I'd like I don't try and do something that I'm not that I'm not capable of doing.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: Do you know what I mean?
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: Like I know my game inside out now that I just try and deliver my game.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: And so, like, since I've started thinking like that, I've been so much more consistent, club and internationally, like just more thinking, like the fact that if I bring me that benefits us, if that makes sense, and that's like the headspace that I've tried to get into, like for that any form of like what we're doing.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: So it's almost like that same thing of just freeing yourself up, like in the same way you get with perspective.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: I probably get from a different side of like actually just a bit of confidence.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: It's like that kind of I think that makes such a difference, especially as you say when you're coming in.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: It also helps that you've got two kids that you're trying to they're trying to wrestle you every day.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: And that's a wicked place to be.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: Helpful.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: This was quite serious, wasn't it?
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: Well should we leave that for part one?
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this has been uh part one Olympic insight selection.
- 29:52SPEAKER_02: It was very serious for Let's Tick Together.
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: Um, we'll be we'll be back next time.
- 29:57SPEAKER_02: We'll be back in a second.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: Not next time.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: Next time.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: See ya, see ya.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: Okay, and we're back.
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: Maybe this will be a serious episode.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: Oh, we we we tend to get mixed mixed feedback when that happens, but um we we're gonna now touch on um some predictions for the Olympics.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's just Olympic heavy heavy episode.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: We're we're three months out.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: I actually looked up, guys.
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: I don't know, I want to bring it back because I bloody loved when we talked about betting, but I actually went on a rampage and really tried to find um the odds for teams uh when they uh for the Olympics, like three months out, and I thought it was quite surprising.
- 30:37SPEAKER_02: I finally found them.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: It was it was difficult, it's not on bet 365 or Paddy Power or anything like that.
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: You've got to really go through the archives to try and find any field hockey betting you can do.
- 30:47SPEAKER_02: But um, do you both want to guess who is the favourites on the men's and women's side?
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: I reckon it's exactly the I reckon it's both the Netherlands.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: No, I'm going I'm going uh China at the women.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: No, we'll be the Netherlands at the women and we'll be Belgium at the men.
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: You wins.
- 31:13SPEAKER_02: Well done.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 31:15SPEAKER_02: Belgium are three to one.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: I think I think can we can we can we do like a like a guess guessing game?
- 31:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: I would say for for the men.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: I would say the men so Belgium is top.
- 31:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: This is not my uh like tier, but this is what I think they will think.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: I think Belgium will be top.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: I think Holland uh or the Netherlands together with Australia will be second, and Germany third, and you guys or like uh and you guys fifth, or like Brendan.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: Do you want to guess?
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: I reckon exactly the same, but flip Germany and GB around.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: So even it's better odds than GB.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: Or then then then Germany.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: That is rash, Brendan.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: I don't think so, man.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: I I have no idea.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: I'm going blank.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: I was just going different to you.
- 32:08SPEAKER_02: Well, Radio Championship Belgium are um the favourites three to one.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: Then it's Holland, three on ten back.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: I'm not a I'm not a bookie, by the way.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: Then Germany next, two on oh uh both Germany and Australia are two on seven back, and then GB 12 to 1 and India 12 to 1.
- 32:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can see that.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: Which I think with history actually is probably like half decent odds, like Belgium are reigning Olympic champions, Netherlands number one, Germany um World Cup winners.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: I think it probably makes sense.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: Belgium, the only final Belgium hasn't made in the last couple years, ever probably from like the major tournaments, and you can go back to like I think even to Rio.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: Um I think they've only not made the the final last year.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the Euros.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the rest they've made almost all the finals, right?
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: Was it not the Euros before the Olympics as well?
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, they came third in that one.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, they also became uh third again.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, fair.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: Okay, so on to you, but they they won gold that that summer.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so um yeah.
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: I've got no idea if we're allowed to do this, but if you no, I don't think we can do this.
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: If you're if you are handing out tips, who you who you're putting on, because Argentina are 14 to 1.
- 33:28SPEAKER_02: We we can't do this, Spain are 20 to 1.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: We we can't do this.
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: I listen to too much Bill Simmons, the basketball podcast.
- 33:39SPEAKER_02: He always does this.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: Oh so good.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: I listen to it as he's my most listened to podcast by a mouth.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: So good, so good.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: NBA playoffs are going on, if anyone actually cares.
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: I'm actually waiting, I'm actually waiting each day for another one to come out.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: That's like where I am, because it gives so much insight, but we're we're losing track, and Brendan apparently doesn't listen to it and looks like I don't listen to Bill Simmons.
- 34:01SPEAKER_01: I have been tracking the NBA playoffs, but I haven't been listening to Bill Simmons after a minute.
- 34:05SPEAKER_02: So so then just quickly with the women's side, what what do you reckon?
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: Uh do you want to both have a guess?
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm going the Netherlands uh are like uh if you pay 100 euros, you get uh two cents back.
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: Uh I think uh Argentina second, Belgium third, and then Germany and China.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: Brent?
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: I reckon Australia third, Germany fourth, Belgium fifth.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: That's my guess.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: Brendan, I think you just nailed it.
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: It's Netherlands first, 20 on 13 back, and then Argentina 5 to 1, uh Australia 6 to 1, Germany 12 to 1, Belgium 15 to 1.
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: So well done, Brent.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: I wonder what the odds I wonder what the odds are on like the women's silver medal position.
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: Sorry, GB and China 25 to 1.
- 34:59SPEAKER_02: I mean that's that's a bit harsh on uh GB.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: They are like the last two Olympics, they've got uh gold and bronze.
- 35:08SPEAKER_02: Uh I understand, but like to put them 25 to what?
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: Last three, sorry, bronze and three Olympics, they've got two bronzes, yeah.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: And they're putting down at a lowly 25.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: They also lost 20 nil against Holland in two games in the pro league.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: What what are the what do you reckon the odds are on like second place?
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: Let's face it, there's no point putting money on whoever wins it.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: But for that second, that runner-up position, like that's actually a good, like, decent bet.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: There's a few horses in there.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: I think that's a good I think that's a terrible bet, to be honest, because it's so unpredictable.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: Like I would put my house on Holland, I wouldn't put a single euro on any other team because I because uh you can you can convince me from the second in the world ranking to the eighth, they could all win this Olympic silver medal.
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: That does make it quite tasty though, and I think that's probably the same for the men's side, where there's like six teams who can win the who can like I think could could could uh could medal win.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: But that's the difference, isn't it?
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: That's the difference, is the fact that we're saying that the the top six men's sides or seven men's sides are all competing for the top spot, whereas in the women's they're not competing for the top spot, they're competing for second to fifth.
- 36:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think we're very different sport.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: The thing is, I think where where the difference lies is if um let's say the Dutch women have a bad day, they are still more likely to win than even to draw against a lot of the opponents they face.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: If we have a bad day, if Belgium has a bad day, if Germany, Australia, GB, whatever, then you're probably going to lose.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: There's not a lot of times in which you play really, really bad for four quarters long, and you can you still come away with a win.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:54SPEAKER_02: And that's why I would be if if you know I didn't even have a horse in the race, that's like I would be hooked on the men's Olympics hockey.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: I obviously just because I think it's the first time in so many years that you could turn around at a major tournament and say, you know, that there are you know a lot of teams are going to be able to beat each other, and he'll who can step up and put put a series of games together and gain some momentum and go for it.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: Because, like you say, that I think almost all the teams in the top six have beaten each other in the last two years.
- 37:25SPEAKER_02: I'd be intrigued about that stat, but like it it definitely doesn't seem like someone's running away with it every time.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: Have you guys ever won against Belgium?
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: I feel like you guys never win against Belgium.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: You win against almost any other team, but never against Belgium, or is that is it is it not a fair we've beaten them as England when your Euros 2021?
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, and the group stage.
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um I have a feeling we've beaten them in the pro league, but they didn't bring their full strength side, yeah.
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: And we lost them.
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: I think we lost them in game two.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: But again, that I guess that does prove it.
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: I think is there anyone that you've got a bogey team against you or not?
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: A bogey team.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: Well, no, not not really a bogey team.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: Like we we we kind of we we kind of struggle in pro league against you guys mostly.
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: Like we don't we don't we last couple of times we really struggled against you guys as as GB.
- 38:21SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, I wouldn't say we have like a bogey team.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: We kind of we kind of with Germany, we can't we we usually split if that makes sense.
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: If if I look pro league wise, we kind of beat them once, then we drew one, or then we we lose one, we win one.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: That's mostly how we how we face the Germans.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: So if I if I had to say a bogey team, I'd say the Germany.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: I guess this is where we talk about like matchups as well, because some teams, like for example, Australia, when Australia play India, there's some kind of headspace that the Aussies have got over the Indians because the matchup just must really, really suit the Aussies because they normally absolutely pan them or they just win normally.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: Like there's always that team that I guess you can match up better against, or or I th I just don't think the Indians uh mentality works against the Australian mentality.
- 39:08SPEAKER_02: I don't think they understand or can can cope with it in the same way that like I don't know, there's there's definitely other teams out there where you see them struggling where you're like, why is that why is that happening?
- 39:17SPEAKER_02: Is there any other examples of that?
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: I'd say us versus the Aussies prior to this cycle.
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: I'd say we've struggled quite I'd say struggle quite a bit.
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: Like I remember the commies in 2018, we couldn't even beat them when they were down to nine men for like five, ten minutes.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: Like we couldn't even like get a shot away.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: In the previous cycle.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't say that's the same for this cycle, but I'd say in previous cycles we have definitely struggled against the Aussies.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm trying to think, but there's not I think that that's a good one.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: But I don't I don't think there's a lot of uh like I know when when we play Australia, it's like it's never it's almost never close, if that makes sense.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: It's either we beat them to shit or they beat us to shit, and and more more times they beat us, but I think it's always like a like kind of a climb on that like the game feels close, but it always ends up being like you know what I mean.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: I I would actually say though that recently, I don't want to big you up too much, but like Belgium really don't like playing Holland at the moment, like because every single time you seem to have some kind of headspace over them where you your your run and gun like hard ass play does not suit the Belgians when they like to play their pretty hockey of keep ball, and you've show you've you've shown them a few times and won big games when you can see both of you are clearly trying fucking hard, um, which I find quite interesting because someone had to eventually kind of knock them off their perch and and and I I I get what you mean, but I don't really agree.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: As in, I feel the the bet the biggest game in the last three years, uh Holland.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: We as Holland played, we lost against them, or like we drew, but we lost, and that was the World Cup semi-final.
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: And uh, I don't know if the Europeans felt like if they didn't really feel like payback or anything, but I feel like that was our butt yeah, then again, I would rather win a semi-final the world cup than the Europeans, and they were 100% trying for a thousand percent at the Europeans, but I feel like like the biggest game in the last three years was uh the World Cup, and I feel like that's where the better teams make the difference, the big teams, like in all seriousness, uh like a pro league and also a Euros, which is like a really big tournament, but at the end, I think it all all revolves, uh revolves.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: It's it's all about the um the World Cup and the Olympics, and even more the Olympics than the World Cup.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I don't think Belgium will worry too much about us uh if it's a one-game semi-final.
- 41:43SPEAKER_00: I I do think they they will they will be well scared is not a good word, but they will be aware of our qualities, but but the our games are so different, as in as you said, it's with us, it's really running gun.
- 41:55SPEAKER_00: Go, go, go, and with them, they can have the ball for like they they play like replay after while you wrote we have the ball for 45 minutes, but it doesn't mean we create an awful lot of chances, but you are with the better team, you feel yeah, I feel you, Brennan.
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: No, I'm I'm I'm all good.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: What what's your what's your prediction on top three in the in the men's side, Phil?
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: If you had to make a prediction right now.
- 42:20SPEAKER_02: This is a really difficult question, isn't it, for us?
- 42:22SPEAKER_02: Because we because we we we've all got uh invested, I think.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can I can I can I could I could answer objectively.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: I could you can answer objectively, yeah.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: I could like take my own thing out of it.
- 42:39SPEAKER_00: I could objectively say that I would say that what I think will happen is uh it will be um Germany bronze, Holland wins gold, I think Australia would win.
- 42:53SPEAKER_00: No, I don't know.
- 42:55SPEAKER_00: I think I think Belgium for me, I think Belgium right now, even though they're the they're they're in the they're in the front runner position for gold.
- 43:05SPEAKER_01: Who you who you saying who so you're saying Belgium, Holland, Germany, well Australia, that's the semi-final lineup.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: Um, I don't and I think it's too important.
- 43:19SPEAKER_00: I would say if I had to bet money now, we can't bet money, but like if I would if I would have to, I would say Belgium would uh is the is the front runner to win it.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: Don't not say they're going to win it, but I think they have the best chance and the bookies are right.
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: I feel like if you look quality-wise, they have the best team.
- 43:37SPEAKER_02: Okay, I've got a really interesting question for you.
- 43:39SPEAKER_02: Because it always in the in the past, in the in the major games, always in the men's side, like one of the favourites or one of the top four who you think are definitely gonna make the semifinals doesn't make the semi finals.
- 43:52SPEAKER_02: Who who's that team?
- 43:54SPEAKER_02: So like the favourites Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Australia, who would you say is most likely not to make the semifinals?
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Wow, really hard to push Belgium in such a favourite role that they will crumble for.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's a tough one, man.
- 44:11SPEAKER_00: I feel like it's it's it's so weird to explain, but we had it in in uh Tokyo that you feel like you're on the right track, you win Europeans, and all of a sudden you get into Tokyo and you crumble, and you you you're you're lucky you get out of the pool phase and you end up uh losing the quarterfinal.
- 44:30SPEAKER_00: Um, like for instance, I think Germany is the most unpredictable team I've ever seen because they could I I feel like they're such a weird team in the pool phase at the Euros.
- 44:43SPEAKER_00: You felt like they were the best team out there.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: They would like go on for a World Cup and then they lose the semifinals against you guys and end up being fourth.
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: Um, in in in uh in India and the World Cup, you don't you you think ah, Germany is pretty shit this tournament, and they end up winning it.
- 44:58SPEAKER_00: Like I feel like the worst they do in the group stage, I think like if Germany goes on goes goes on to become fourth in our pool, because for the listeners, we are in a pool together with GB, Germany, uh, France, South Africa, and Spain.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: Germany could easily become fourth in the pool.
- 45:16SPEAKER_00: Everyone thinks shit, and they can beat Belgium in the quarterfinals.
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: That's that's what Germany is to me.
- 45:22SPEAKER_02: So I couldn't I could I couldn't agree more.
- 45:24SPEAKER_02: I I was gonna say if you're choosing one team out of them four, I think they they have not been consistent.
- 45:30SPEAKER_02: They have a load of guys who just sometimes just look like they don't care, and even in like huge moments, they look like they don't care.
- 45:37SPEAKER_02: It's a really strange thing when then they suddenly turn it on and then they win.
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: And this but this but this goes back to your point though, like that quarterfinal crossover, like it could be any big pairings, like you could have two off days in the group stage, and suddenly you're staring down the barrel of being fourth in the group and you're playing against the top team.
- 45:55SPEAKER_01: But like ultimately, if you want to win anything anyway, you've got to go and beat the top teams.
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: Like for me, like it could literally be as simple as that is somebody has a bad pool stage, and then suddenly the tournament is thrown wide open.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: That's what's that's what I think is really cool.
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: And I think this year with the whole uh uh with how how how wide the men's uh field is, uh I feel like it doesn't really if you become first in the in the pool phase with us with like in our in our pool, you're likely to to either get India or Argentina, maybe even New Zealand, but like that's that's not a nice matchup.
- 46:31SPEAKER_00: Like Argentina is also like a team.
- 46:33SPEAKER_00: I would like, I'm like, yeah, you will probably have the ball for 55 minutes, but you could end up losing 3-0.
- 46:40SPEAKER_00: Like, you know what I mean?
- 46:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I think that's what makes it such a good tournament this year, and you have to be on from the get-go.
- 46:47SPEAKER_00: And like, even Belgium, when they went on to win Tokyo, they they they almost crumbled in the quarterfinal against India.
- 46:54SPEAKER_03: Did they did they lose in the pool stage?
- 46:56SPEAKER_00: Sorry, semi-final against India.
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: Did they lose in the pool stage?
- 47:00SPEAKER_00: Belgium.
- 47:00SPEAKER_00: No, they won everything.
- 47:02SPEAKER_00: Did they drew you guys?
- 47:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they drew you guys with uh with this uh the handshakes uh after after 15 minutes.
- 47:10SPEAKER_02: That was one of the weirdest games I've ever been a part of.
- 47:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I can't get my head around that.
- 47:15SPEAKER_00: Well, I I could I can get my hand head around it.
- 47:18SPEAKER_00: You guys wanted to fuck us, and you did, and ball down to you guys.
- 47:21SPEAKER_00: But we took we took India we took India as a favorable sorry.
- 47:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Brent, just if for anyone who doesn't understand this, we had one of the strangest things at one of the biggest moments in that we were playing Belgium in the last pool game at the Olympics, and we already knew that something had happened, the Dutch had played someone, and I don't even know what the result was, but but there was a point, yeah, there was a point um with about it was it wasn't it wasn't long to go where we were playing out to all, and then suddenly with about seven minutes to go, there were a series of nods on the sideline between coaching staff.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: Um, and then and then Belgium started keeping the ball way too much for even Belgium, and then I remember chasing some bloke around, uh it might have been Mermons or something like that, and then suddenly he stopped running, and then you started to like like make a a wave over the pitch that we weren't playing anymore, and we we I promise you, we're never told anything about this, and then suddenly it was just the fact that like if we draw now, we have India, Belgium are happy, and yeah, the the Dutch are gonna play Australia in the in the quarterfinals.
- 48:30SPEAKER_02: It was bizarre, it was absolutely bizarre.
- 48:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, some might even say it was match fixing, but we'll never we never really got to the end of it.
- 48:41SPEAKER_00: Brendan, you remember that?
- 48:43SPEAKER_01: I I just remember looking at Charlier and being so confused, and he just looked at me and just started smiling, and I was like, what the fuck is going on?
- 48:53SPEAKER_01: But then we took we took India as a favorable matchup and we fucked it ourselves.
- 48:57SPEAKER_01: So from that point of view, like yeah, yeah, it was yeah.
- 49:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think we've we've probably comprehensively said nothing there, so I I I expected nothing less.
- 49:08SPEAKER_02: But um we're gonna head into the coop.
- 49:11SPEAKER_02: Is that okay with you guys?
- 49:12SPEAKER_02: Or you got anything else to finish with?
- 49:14SPEAKER_02: No, I get me in the coop.
- 49:16SPEAKER_02: Brendan, Brendan, make a make a chicken noise to go along with uh Theo's chicken noise.
- 49:25SPEAKER_00: But welcome everyone into the coop.
- 49:29SPEAKER_03: Brendan's not allowed in.
- 49:33SPEAKER_00: No, Brendan is allowed.
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: Welcome into my coop.
- 49:36SPEAKER_00: Um you guys, we can act like I didn't already give you the questions for that for our listeners.
- 49:43SPEAKER_00: Both Brendan and Phil are not too too good on the spot.
- 49:47SPEAKER_00: They kind of struggle when you put them on the spot, and they need time to think about it and need always time to, and I need to talk even more so they have time to think.
- 49:54SPEAKER_00: Phil is now, I look at Phil right now, and he's thinking what his question was and what his answer was going to be.
- 50:01SPEAKER_00: So here you go, Philip.
- 50:03SPEAKER_00: First question in the coup if you could ask any question to any hockey player, past or present, what would it be?
- 50:14SPEAKER_02: Can you ask Brandon, please?
- 50:17SPEAKER_01: I genuinely think this is such a tough question.
- 50:20SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 50:22SPEAKER_02: Because what are you gonna ask people?
- 50:25SPEAKER_00: I wanna ask Kike Castellon uh what went through the freshman into in his face.
- 50:33SPEAKER_00: That would be I wanna ask him, and I want like a genuine answer.
- 50:36SPEAKER_00: That would be my question.
- 50:38SPEAKER_00: What went through your head once you spat?
- 50:41SPEAKER_00: That would be a question of mine.
- 50:43SPEAKER_02: What do you what do you think he would say?
- 50:45SPEAKER_00: Probably not a lot.
- 50:46SPEAKER_00: I don't think a lot went through his head.
- 50:49SPEAKER_00: If you were really there in the moment, I don't think you would spit.
- 50:53SPEAKER_00: So I don't think I don't think a lot would go through his head.
- 50:56SPEAKER_00: I would also ask Kina or like the Grambush boys, whether they sometimes genuine genuinely believe that the referee is wrong, or they just fuck around sometimes.
- 51:08SPEAKER_00: Like if like Tom Grambush genuinely thinks the referee is is is an is is is is an idiot, or like what what what really goes through his head then?
- 51:19SPEAKER_02: By the way, on this point, um side point, I was talking to Aubrey yesterday, um, and his dad is a huge, huge uh fan of the podcast, so shout out uh Tim Aubrey, what a man.
- 51:33SPEAKER_02: Big Tim.
- 51:34SPEAKER_02: Um but he used the opportunity for us nominating Orbs as um Umpires Worst Nightmare to call Aubrey uh a few days ago and say you do need to sort yourself out, you need to be better with umpires.
- 51:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, I've watched you sort of set it several times this year and you need to sort it out.
- 51:51SPEAKER_02: And Orb's like, What?
- 51:53SPEAKER_02: I'm not that bad, and he's like, You are, and then Orb's like, Am I that bad?
- 51:56SPEAKER_02: And we're like, Yeah, yeah.
- 51:59SPEAKER_02: Is he that bad?
- 52:01SPEAKER_02: Um he had his moments.
- 52:03SPEAKER_02: He's just got a very he's got like a really um telling shout.
- 52:08SPEAKER_02: And he he can be he can be very, very sarcastic and quite quite funny, um, which I doesn't always go down.
- 52:14SPEAKER_02: Which doesn't help.
- 52:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I would promote that that kind of behavior.
- 52:17SPEAKER_00: So I'm not going to agree with Aubrey's death.
- 52:21SPEAKER_00: Sorry, Tim.
- 52:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sorry, Tim.
- 52:24SPEAKER_00: Fuck you.
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: It's a tough question, this to YouTube.
- 52:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know that's why I asked it before.
- 52:34SPEAKER_00: Fine.
- 52:34SPEAKER_01: Uh I'd ask Gerja, I'd ask Gerjan what cologne he uses because he just smells great.
- 52:38SPEAKER_01: I just want to know what it is.
- 52:41SPEAKER_02: I'd ask Jorek Crohn why he cares so much about what his hair looks like.
- 52:46SPEAKER_00: Oh, I don't think uh no, I'm going to step in for him.
- 52:50SPEAKER_00: He doesn't really care that much about his hair.
- 52:53SPEAKER_00: I think uh I think I I I am I am you wouldn't tell by by my face because I'm not the prettiest, but I'm I am really vain.
- 53:02SPEAKER_00: I think Joret is less vain than me.
- 53:03SPEAKER_00: He does like the look of himself.
- 53:05SPEAKER_00: I would ask him uh not about his hair, he could go to like to anywhere without putting any uh uh uh hair gel in or anything.
- 53:14SPEAKER_02: You sound like you're kind of kind of yeah, it's it's gonna be weird.
- 53:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you like he can go anywhere and he looks great.
- 53:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what a guy.
- 53:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's really pretty, right?
- 53:26SPEAKER_00: He's a good looking boy, yeah.
- 53:27SPEAKER_00: Like no homo, but he's a really good looking guy.
- 53:30SPEAKER_00: He takes his shirt off a bit.
- 53:31SPEAKER_00: If we have to put some criticism there, he he takes his shirt off way too much.
- 53:36SPEAKER_00: That's the criticism we're gonna put in.
- 53:38SPEAKER_00: So ask him that.
- 53:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, fair.
- 53:40SPEAKER_00: I thought you guys were gonna come up with some better questions, like uh what went through your head on the final shootout, uh uh uh somewhere like this, something like that.
- 53:48SPEAKER_00: But you you asking about Cologne and about your disappearance.
- 53:52SPEAKER_00: Well done to you both.
- 53:53SPEAKER_00: You feel the it's it's it's when you ask also about giving, you guys.
- 53:58SPEAKER_00: It's not take, take, take, and enjoy all the wonderful questions.
- 54:01SPEAKER_00: You also have to give a little.
- 54:02SPEAKER_02: You calm yourself.
- 54:03SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna I'm gonna just chime in quickly.
- 54:06SPEAKER_02: Is that when I ask for your input, I normally text it you a few days before.
- 54:11SPEAKER_02: Second question in the coup.
- 54:14SPEAKER_02: You still you still both do no research.
- 54:16SPEAKER_02: I know you both, but but you know, I put the idea out there.
- 54:19SPEAKER_02: When you tell us 30 seconds before we record, here's a question for you.
- 54:23SPEAKER_02: I want you to put some deep thought into this, and then we're gonna record and talk about it.
- 54:27SPEAKER_02: And I want you to think as you're doing the pod.
- 54:30SPEAKER_01: Oh, question two.
- 54:31SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 54:33SPEAKER_00: Question number two.
- 54:34SPEAKER_00: Phil, by the way, um, the coop is my sanctuary.
- 54:38SPEAKER_00: I don't appreciate you taking over my coop.
- 54:41SPEAKER_00: Second question in the coop.
- 54:43SPEAKER_00: If you could bring back any player all time to play for your national team, you can he which player would it be?
- 54:51SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter what nationality he is, but you can bring him back to play.
- 54:55SPEAKER_00: Like I could say I could bring back Ashley Jackson to play for Holland.
- 55:00SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't, but I could.
- 55:02SPEAKER_01: I'd go for Christopher Zeller.
- 55:05SPEAKER_02: Brendan, Brendan, say your first answer.
- 55:07SPEAKER_01: That was my first answer.
- 55:08SPEAKER_02: Say your first say your proper first answer.
- 55:11SPEAKER_01: That was my first answer.
- 55:12SPEAKER_00: Okay, everyone.
- 55:14SPEAKER_00: Brendan is too scared to say that he actually wanted Mark Knollston to come back and play with him.
- 55:20SPEAKER_01: But I don't I don't want him to pass to me and then tell me I'm shit, so I don't want him back.
- 55:26SPEAKER_01: Bring back.
- 55:27SPEAKER_01: I I genuinely genuinely, Zella, but as a on a serious point, I'd my question before would have been to Mark Knolls being like, Why the fuck did you have to pick on me and Knob?
- 55:37SPEAKER_00: Now you say why you wouldn't pick on me, you knob.
- 55:40SPEAKER_00: When you would actually be in front of you, you would um I'm sorry, Mr.
- 55:43SPEAKER_00: Knowles.
- 55:44SPEAKER_02: Um why did you I'd crumble in in the 27 World League finals?
- 55:49SPEAKER_02: Why did why did you why were you so mean to me?
- 55:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you threw a high ball, you actually told everyone I'm shit.
- 55:58SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'd ask Billy, I'd ask Billy Backer.
- 56:01SPEAKER_02: I'd ask Billy Backer what why he didn't just give up with his hair a few years earlier.
- 56:07SPEAKER_00: You have uh you have a you have a real like with hair, you and hair is like really weird.
- 56:14SPEAKER_01: Uh you I'm gonna defend Phil on this.
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: Billy Backer was combing his hair over to protect his bold head.
- 56:20SPEAKER_01: He needs to just get rid early doors, he needed to just go bold.
- 56:23SPEAKER_01: I think there's no comment like back.
- 56:25SPEAKER_01: It's not a question.
- 56:26SPEAKER_01: You guys had your chance.
- 56:27SPEAKER_01: Who would you bring back?
- 56:30SPEAKER_01: Do you know what Billy Backer's hair reminds me of?
- 56:31SPEAKER_01: You know, when it rains at Wimbledon, they bring the covers over to cover the pitch.
- 56:35SPEAKER_01: That's what his hair reminds me of.
- 56:40SPEAKER_00: Oh if we're really if we're really going there, like are are you guys this tough to like Ashley Jackson?
- 56:49SPEAKER_00: Are you guys being this cool to Ashley Jackson?
- 56:51SPEAKER_00: No, no, of course you're not.
- 56:54SPEAKER_00: You're not telling him his hair is shit and he's like 20 kilograms too too heavy to play in the EHL, but you both do.
- 57:01SPEAKER_00: Like, come on, don't be so don't be so harsh on Billy Baker.
- 57:04SPEAKER_00: You the problem is is Ashley Jackson still beats us.
- 57:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, fair.
- 57:09SPEAKER_00: Billy Baker would probably still beat us if he was still playing.
- 57:13SPEAKER_02: Wait, Billy Billy Baker is it was insane.
- 57:16SPEAKER_02: I just I just thought, you know, there's some feedback for him.
- 57:21SPEAKER_01: He was he was just a baldy, boldy just trying to hide, and he should have just accepted being bold.
- 57:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 57:29SPEAKER_02: I um I'd be really boring and I'd I'd bring back turned annoy because I mean shit me watching him was fucking unreal.
- 57:36SPEAKER_02: And yeah, if you didn't watch him and just love hockey a little bit more, then you don't actually love the game.
- 57:42SPEAKER_02: And you just desperately wish that you could be anywhere near that good.
- 57:46SPEAKER_01: That'd be nice.
- 57:47SPEAKER_01: I've just got that like MBA.
- 57:49SPEAKER_01: If you don't like that, then you don't like watching NBA basketball.
- 57:52SPEAKER_01: That's what I just got at the back of my head then when you said that.
- 57:55SPEAKER_02: If you don't like him, you didn't like hockey.
- 57:58SPEAKER_02: I did a really loser English version.
- 58:03SPEAKER_02: I can't believe we put in Yupe's joke last week.
- 58:07SPEAKER_02: Can I just say uh like with with full context, me and Brennan were not behind that joke?
- 58:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:12SPEAKER_01: Anyway, you third question.
- 58:14SPEAKER_01: Which joke?
- 58:15SPEAKER_01: Stop.
- 58:15SPEAKER_01: You would you bring you who would you bring back?
- 58:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, that was a great joke.
- 58:19SPEAKER_00: You would you bring back?
- 58:22SPEAKER_00: I would actually genuinely bring back Knowles to play alongside me to clean up my mess.
- 58:29SPEAKER_01: Do you know?
- 58:30SPEAKER_01: Do you ever see that EHL goal that you scored for Rotterdam where he just like turned three people inside out and then just put it in the bin in the EHL?
- 58:36SPEAKER_01: That's ridiculous.
- 58:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he was he was he was insane.
- 58:39SPEAKER_00: So I think I'd play and bring him back.
- 58:42SPEAKER_00: He could clean up my mess.
- 58:44SPEAKER_00: I could run down the right hand side, lose the ball, and he could like win it back.
- 58:47SPEAKER_02: Here's can I uh can I join the coupe?
- 58:49SPEAKER_02: Sorry, you can I ask who's the player?
- 58:52SPEAKER_02: This is a different question, but who's the player you'd like to play alongside you that would compliment you best?
- 58:57SPEAKER_01: Because you've just answered it, but I think van der Horst would compliment me best because he could do everything and I'd do nothing.
- 59:13SPEAKER_01: I'd have liked to play, I genuinely would have liked to play against someone like Max Muller.
- 59:16SPEAKER_01: Like next sorry, next to him, Max Muller, the old German captain for like the 2012 cycle, 2020 cycle.
- 59:24SPEAKER_01: He was unreal defensively.
- 59:25SPEAKER_01: So like if I ever fuck he just mopped up everything.
- 59:29SPEAKER_01: He was what our like defensive stuff for the junior stuff was all based on was just Max Muller, him and Martin Hayner.
- 59:35SPEAKER_01: If I see them kick a ball, I'm like, yes, yes, jakes in my veins.
- 59:39SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 59:41SPEAKER_01: So I yeah, I choose I choose Max Muller.
- 59:44SPEAKER_00: That would be very easy to press.
- 59:47SPEAKER_01: Oh, grow up.
- 59:53SPEAKER_01: Max Muller, he was an athlete, he's a politician now, I think.
- 59:59SPEAKER_02: That's not really an argument, Brent.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_02: No, it's just a fact.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_00: I would say someone who would compliment me very well would would probably be Maxwell Balkstein.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_02: I think I think the equivalent he is Sanford.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_01: No, no, but I think Balkerstein's a bit different.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_00: Balkerstein was like he got he's he said himself he was scared to cross the midline.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_00: He was Sanford.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_00: No, and he Balkstein was really all about defense, defense, defense.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_00: Like, can you imagine?
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_00: I used to play for two years at Orange Road, or like three years I played center back together with Robert van Horst.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm I'm not I'm not the world's best defender right now, but I really couldn't defend like five years ago.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_00: And Hogst was an unreal player on the ball, but really couldn't defend as well.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_00: Like we were we were all we were quite impossible to press, like relative relatively, but we were tough to press.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_00: But that we were we were we were like a like a like a as in Dutch we say as neak as a basket.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_02: What is translate?
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_00: Um that that was the English translation.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_02: Okay, we'll we'll yeah nice, yeah, nice.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_00: In leak.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_00: It's like when is it on English?
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_00: Once water goes through, what do you call it?
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like it's you're saying like smooth like butter.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_02: No, no, that's the same, is it?
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_02: No, he says leak, I think he means leak.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I said, but but he's saying about him and horse, I'm saying it's like smooth like butter.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_02: That's a good note.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, he's saying they let them bad defensively, not really good.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_02: Oh, I was trying to be nice about you both.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_01: Oh no, smooth smooth like butter on the ball, but you're like yeah, and then off the ball we win.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_00: We were leak as a basket, I said now.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_00: I understand.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_00: You could throw water into a basket, then everything will go through.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_02: But Brendan's both colanders.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there you go.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_02: I was waiting for Brendan to use the word colander.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_02: Colander, it's my favourite insult.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_02: I I was trying to think, I don't really have the same thing where you have like a fullback pairing, but I mean I'd I would have really liked to play with Toby Halker, Brendan's idol, because I mean you're looking for someone to just do all of your dirty work, be insanely good on the ball, and then he he didn't he just pass you the ball a lot.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_02: I'd quite like that, and then not bother running back.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_02: I could get on board with that more.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_02: I don't do that a great deal now, so but you know, even more.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_01: I was gonna say he passes it, so that'd probably be a good compliment, yeah.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_02: That'd be nice.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you you'll enjoy this.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_01: I have to uh have you got any more questions in the coop?
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_01: So I I I witnessed Phil doing a training session on the side of the pitch this week.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_01: He had Astros on, as you as you do normally.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_01: He had a glove on, but no shin pads.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_01: Shit or hit.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_00: Shit.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_00: I also think Phil, to be honest, why do you even have a glove on?
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_00: You would never put your hand on the ground at any moment in any situation.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_01: The best part about this was the fact that he was just getting fed balls.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_01: So he had a glove on when he was just being past the ball, and I couldn't get my head around it.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_01: I was watching whilst we were training, I was watching him being like, This is fucking weird.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_01: What a loser.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_02: That is fair.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, for context, I'm I'm I'm trying to play hockey again, which is good fun, you know, on the rehab train.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_02: And and I was like, Well, maybe I need to practice the way you actually play.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_02: So I was like, Well, I don't need shin pads yet because I'm just playing really simple hockey, but I could get used to having the glove on, and I and then and then the whole of the squad came and warmed up next to me, and I was like, this is a bit annoying, and then they all clapped me when I did something really simple, and I was like, Yeah, it's really annoying.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_00: You know what, Phil?
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_00: You know what kind of I'm I'm gonna tell you one thing.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_00: You know what you're really bad at?
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_00: You're you are you're a really nice person, we all really love you, but uh you take shit incredibly annoyingly.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_00: You always talk in a really like sensitive way and really sad, and then you explain yourself why why for for like, yeah, um, I was just trying to get used to my glove, and then all the fun is gone from taking shit out of you.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_00: Like accept that that this that there's been made fun of you, be like me, get on the closet and start insulting people instead of like explaining yourself in a way too rational way.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_02: I feel like this is something that should have come out in our relationship a long time ago.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_02: You I'd known you got annoyed at this for years, and I've been I've been using it, and and I know that the best thing, the best form of defense is to not be pissed off.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm on you's side here.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_00: I thought that I was like, uh I wouldn't annoy you.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_00: That's how you respond always.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_00: It's like really rational, and I hate it.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Brendan, I'm saying I I'm agreeing.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_00: Uncontrollable.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_02: I don't think that's the word.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_00: I know it's not the word.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_02: All right, well, I'll take some feedback on board.
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_02: I'll just say fuck you and get annoyed in the future.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, nice, nice, sure, Brendan.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_02: Run of us, one of us, one of us.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_02: I mean, this has been an eclectic let's stick together episode.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_02: I think this is us at our best where we do something really serious and then we just go into complete calamity mode, and and that and that is us in a nutshell.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_02: So congratulations to us.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_02: It's been episode five.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_02: We're in season six, I think.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_02: You put you you have a joke this week or not?
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_00: No, apparently I got feedback from both of you that that the stuck up cons one wasn't uh wasn't a big hit with you guys.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah, I will keep the jokes.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_00: I do have a good joke, but I won't say it.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_02: Also, should we quick quick one before we go?
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_02: Should we bring back shit or hit?
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_02: Because that was always good fun.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_00: I will I will think maybe uh maybe hey the the listeners can also pitch in every once in a while.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_00: Send us some shit or hits, give us something to talk about, send in some cool questions, send in some shit or hits.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_00: It's it's it's it's it's take, take, take with these listeners these days.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_00: Give a little.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_00: Come on.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you clearly see in our content is not good enough, so give us some give us some stuff to work with.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_00: If you put both of you on the spot, other shit comes out.
