- 0:03Welcome everybody, and thank you to Sports Card Clubhouse for
- 0:07hosting our little, our question and answer from our viewers.
- 0:11We, we do a, we, we do a weekly podcast collector investor
- 0:15podcast and we ran way over time this past time because there was
- 0:18a lot of stuff in the news and we didn't get to our, our weekly
- 0:21session where we talk about, we answer questions from the
- 0:24viewers. So we're going to do that here
- 0:25today. For anyone who doesn't know us,
- 0:26I'm Chris and that is Jeremy the Texas Snowman.
- 0:30And what up? Yeah, yeah.
- 0:33Thank you again to the sports card network here.
- 0:36Yeah. Thank you guys.
- 0:37Appreciate y'all very much. I'm, I'm probably the smartest
- 0:40one in the group here, but he he's smart too.
- 0:42So we got some fun answers for you on some really fun
- 0:45questions, right Chris? Yeah.
- 0:47Some of that, some of what he just said is true other, but
- 0:50let's go ahead and check out some of these questions.
- 0:52All right, here we go man, here we go.
- 0:54This is from dog ate my card. I love that name.
- 0:57It is awesome. What up buddy?
- 0:59Hi guys, another great podcast. I've been a long time listener
- 1:02and remember when you all started this podcast those many
- 1:05months ago, you were so young, Brad eyed and bushy tailed with
- 1:09that boyish charm of entering a bright new world.
- 1:14It's been great listening to you all on my drive to work on
- 1:18Wednesday. And thank you for fixing the
- 1:20intro. My question for you this week,
- 1:22do you think that unopened wax, vintage junk wax, etcetera will
- 1:26be the next bubble in the hobby? I would suggest that it may be
- 1:30the Case, No pun intended, as modern boxes have started to
- 1:34become out of reach for collectors and there's still is
- 1:36so many of us who still like to open packs.
- 1:39I've been watching prices on open wax boxes on the rise
- 1:42lately and it got me to thinking, what do you think?
- 1:46Yeah, I think, you know, there's there's more and more wax that's
- 1:49going away. And I think that it certainly is
- 1:52going to. I could.
- 1:54I could definitely see it going up on certain wax and going way
- 1:59down and to the bubble point on other wax that just is
- 2:04absolutely ridiculously high now.
- 2:07So I, I think it depends on what it is.
- 2:08If it's, if it's older wax and harder to find wax, I think it's
- 2:10going to go up more. And if it's the modern stuff, I
- 2:14think hopefully at some point, you know, people will start to
- 2:17realize, Oh my gosh, I spent 2 grand and pulled 50 bucks out of
- 2:20this thing and that happened more than once.
- 2:22Maybe I should pay less for these boxes or not do that
- 2:24again. Yeah, no, I mean, I, I echo what
- 2:28you just said I would. I wouldn't use the term bubble.
- 2:30Like I don't think, I don't think prices are just gonna
- 2:32collapse one day and and half overnight.
- 2:34I think it'll be as down, I think in the the the wildly over
- 2:38priced, you know, ultra modern stuff.
- 2:41I would not buy that as investments, if that's what
- 2:43you're asking. I mean, most years, most years
- 2:46do not produce a notable, you know, generational talent
- 2:50rookie. Yeah.
- 2:52So, you know, most have some some notable names, but not like
- 2:55big. So I wouldn't I wouldn't invest
- 2:57in for that reason. I would expect if you were to
- 3:00buy a 2000, you know, a box today for $1000, I would expect
- 3:03it to be worth much, much less three years from now.
- 3:06But unless you just happen to hit the right, you know, product
- 3:10that has that one thing that everybody wants, but most of it
- 3:12will probably go down ultra modern.
- 3:15I'm talking about ultra modern, I think.
- 3:16I think older wax is generally proven to be a pretty, pretty
- 3:18good sort of long term, you know that behold.
- 3:22So there's a big difference between the ultra modern stuff,
- 3:25which I think is what the question is sort of referring
- 3:27to. Yeah, like 22000 football boxes
- 3:31that good investment there, right 98, same thing you.
- 3:35Know with Manning but. Yeah, good point.
- 3:37I I agree. Yeah, All right, thanks.
- 3:40Dog ate my card. Almost at homework.
- 3:44At Brian Steller, 7146 What's? Up Brian Steler.
- 3:47Brian Steler. Oh sorry Brian Steler.
- 3:50My bad. Brian Steler 7146.
- 3:53All right, what part of the hobby has grown?
- 3:55The high end? The low end?
- 3:56Are people just chasing rarity or numbered stuff with them?
- 4:00Overprinting again? Will base rookies and 1st
- 4:03Bowman's be the next junk wax with all the different colors
- 4:06and parallels or will they have value with so many people
- 4:09entering the hobby? I guess that's going to depend
- 4:12on if they stay or leave the hobby.
- 4:13What are what are your thoughts, brothers?
- 4:17OK, well, a lot, a lot here. What part of the hobby has
- 4:19grown? I mean all of it.
- 4:21Like it's not the high end stuff is taken off, low end stuff is
- 4:24taken off. When you go to card shows and go
- 4:26to dollar and look at dollar boxes, there's way more people
- 4:30thumbing through dollar boxes today than there was 5-10 years
- 4:32ago. So a lot of the hobby has grown.
- 4:34And you see this with all metrics, you know, every every
- 4:37card show is breaking records, eBay is breaking records every
- 4:41month with their sales. PSA is, you know, grading more
- 4:44cards than ever every single month.
- 4:45All the metrics point to everything's growing, whether
- 4:48that's good or bad or sustainable.
- 4:49I'm not speaking to that. I'm just saying that's what's
- 4:51that's what's clearly happening for your next sort of question,
- 4:55will Bass rookies and 1st Bowman's be the next junk wax?
- 4:58I mean, it's hard to say like generally what's happened, what
- 5:03happens over the long term. And if you're talking what I'm
- 5:06saying, I'm saying five years or more, is that a player's best of
- 5:10the best of the best stuff does really, really well and most of
- 5:13everything else kind of trickles down.
- 5:15So what will be defined as the best of the best of the best for
- 5:18any individual player? I don't know.
- 5:20But that's sort of generally what happens long term with with
- 5:24modern stuff. Agreed.
- 5:26Yep. They they they're gonna, they're
- 5:27gonna make a lot more cards. There's only they're not gonna
- 5:30make any more rookie cards, though.
- 5:32Yeah, that's what I always say. So if I'm gonna invest in a
- 5:35player, Downtown's is a great example.
- 5:37Kaboom's is a great example. Alter Egos is a great example.
- 5:41Those are really hot products. But will they be in two years?
- 5:45Will there be a new thing that's out and those are not as
- 5:48desirable anymore or not as sought after anymore and
- 5:50therefore go down? Don't know.
- 5:52But the rookie card's still a rookie card no matter what they
- 5:54come out with afterwards. So you know it.
- 5:56It depends on what it is. It depends on a bunch of
- 5:59factors. But do I think, you know, Chris
- 6:02and I joke around all the time with all the variations coming
- 6:04out, I'm like, Chris, do you think they're going to come out
- 6:05with the pumpkin swirly swirl, Price kin, you know, pumpkin
- 6:09spice kins swirl, whatever. You know, who knows what they're
- 6:12going? To come out with Neo Neo Neo
- 6:14coined the Disco swirly ball which is my favorite.
- 6:16Disco swirly ball. I like that exactly.
- 6:20Who knows what they're going to come out with, man, But yeah, so
- 6:23are they making way too much? Yeah, man.
- 6:26I mean, half. They're making so many cards,
- 6:30dude. Like it's insanity how many
- 6:32cards they are making. So yeah, is it the 80s, nineties
- 6:35again? Absolutely.
- 6:36For the ultra modern stuff, the the low end stuff for so much of
- 6:40it. Yeah, it is.
- 6:41Yeah, for sure. Yeah, we'll pull up the question
- 6:43again because there was like a third party even.
- 6:46I guess it's depend what are your well, parallels will have
- 6:49value. I guess it depends on if they
- 6:51stay or leave the hobby. That's true.
- 6:52The hobby, as I mentioned the beginning, the hobby's grown.
- 6:55So there's way more people in the hobby today than 510 years
- 6:58ago. I'm I'm sure of that.
- 7:00That's sustainable. I have no idea.
- 7:02And that's that that will ultimately be the answer to your
- 7:05question. If this growth is sustainable or
- 7:08even kind of sustainable, then yeah, the values could kind of
- 7:12hold, you know, better than you would think.
- 7:14But if, if people start to leave like they did in say the mid 90s
- 7:18or, or in 2022 or 2021, sort of a lot of people jumped in and
- 7:22jumped out. If we see that sort of thing,
- 7:24yeah, you could see prices fall pretty, pretty quick.
- 7:27Yeah, good point. Supply and demand, if there's
- 7:29enough people to keep buying the mass amounts of product to come
- 7:32out. So yeah, I mean, Fanatics has
- 7:34invested a lot of money to get people into the hobby.
- 7:36I don't know if it will, how long it will last, but sorry,
- 7:40that's my, that's me, the important people dinging me,
- 7:43apparently. They must need coffee.
- 7:47Chris, turn your damn rigor off. You said it was off seawall.
- 7:53You know I'm important. OK, I put it.
- 7:59OK. Yeah.
- 8:00All right. What's the next question?
- 8:02All right. Thank you, Brian Steeler for the
- 8:04question. Appreciate you, buddy.
- 8:06On to the next. You ready, Chris?
- 8:08Yep, I'm ready. Junk Wax Rookie Go ahead and
- 8:13talk a little bit about Junk Wax Rookie.
- 8:14Here is a viewer of ours and he sends us like 5 lightning round
- 8:18questions to go through every week.
- 8:21And it's great, great, great stuff to talk about.
- 8:24So it's, it's awesome. Yeah.
- 8:26So these, these we answer quick, five different questions and we
- 8:28try to answer them pretty quick each.
- 8:31Great work. Again, you guys rock Lightning
- 8:32Round 60 seconds or less #1 most iconic #1 cards of a set.
- 8:38So it's asking what the number one card of a set is.
- 8:41So we pick a set and say the number one.
- 8:42No, I think it means card number one in a set like the 52 Andy
- 8:45Paphco is #1. Oh, I see.
- 8:49Is that that's how I interpret the question?
- 8:52Immediate thought. Let me think, well, the 52
- 8:54Paphco is kind of a good one. 89 Upper Deck Griffey. 89 upper
- 9:00deck Griffe is a good one. I was going to say 73 tops with
- 9:04Ruth Mayer, Ruth Aaron and Maze. Like that one?
- 9:08That's a good 154, tops Ted Williams.
- 9:11That's a good one. 54 Ted Williams is a good 53 Two.
- 9:14Pass code. 53 Jackie Robinson There's a lot of good ones.
- 9:17Ah yeah, 53 Robinson. Oh, there's so many, but I'd say
- 9:19the most iconic that I can think of right now would probably be
- 9:22the 89 upper. Deck.
- 9:23Yeah, that's probably the winner. #2.
- 9:27Quick thoughts on Providence for a card and what it means for
- 9:29value story initial thoughts. Yeah, it it depends on what the
- 9:34provenance is right? Like you know, for example, the
- 9:38Black swamp find was epic. I mean crazy high grade pre war
- 9:43cards do would I pay more because it was from the Black
- 9:47Swamp swamp find? No, it just identifies that
- 9:49that's defined it came from. But would I pay more if it was a
- 9:54card from for for Thor's sake, we'll use Clemente.
- 9:58That Clemente actually PC this card.
- 10:02Yeah, I I would pay more for that because one of my favorite
- 10:05players touched this card. That's awesome.
- 10:08You know what I mean? So it depends on the provenance,
- 10:10right? Yeah, yeah, it probably wouldn't
- 10:13change much for me. But yeah, of course, if if a
- 10:16card has a cool story behind it, I think it adds it adds value.
- 10:19Yeah, so if Cal Ripken Junior owned this card personally, you
- 10:23wouldn't pay a little more for it.
- 10:24I would, I would. You would OK.
- 10:26Cool. I think, I think generally, like
- 10:27you said, probably most of the time I wouldn't care like the
- 10:30Black Swamp, fine. But if it was a specific card
- 10:33that where the story specifically mattered to me,
- 10:35yeah, sure, I'll pay a premium for that.
- 10:36If I owned it, you would absolutely.
- 10:39Pay, I'd pay, I'd pay last year. And you're right.
- 10:42Thanks bro, wrong direction there all right #3 Are rainbow
- 10:47chases the news set collecting for some people they are not
- 10:51for? Me Well, no, they're not new
- 10:52people that rainbow collecting has been a that's a been a lot.
- 10:55Around long time. Yeah, it's been around 10, you
- 10:57know, many, many years. I actually think it's kind of
- 11:00cool. Like I get people complain about
- 11:03the, the disco swirly balls and, and how many ridiculous
- 11:05parallels there are. And there are, they're
- 11:07ridiculous. But it is kind of cool thing to
- 11:09collect. Like, and it, it is fun seeing a
- 11:11rainbow like somebody's got, you know, 40 different parallels of
- 11:14the same card. It's kind of cool.
- 11:16It's not something I collect, but I I respect it when I see
- 11:19it. Yeah, it's getting harder to do
- 11:21that with a lot of stuff. There's so much.
- 11:23So I, I, I've had a few, I've had a few people tell me yeah,
- 11:25out My goal was to collect every single card from X player and
- 11:29then they get into it or like, dude, there's.
- 11:30No, yeah, that's not happening. Can't do it, man.
- 11:34All right #4 do you do you foresee a rise in Star company
- 11:38baseball? I think you meant basketball
- 11:40cards rising. Oh, no, I did mean baseball.
- 11:43OK, so do you see a rise in Star company baseball cards rising
- 11:48like the basketball cards did? Example, Griffey star rookies
- 11:51from 88 to 89. OK.
- 11:53I personally do not, no. But all right, next one I.
- 11:58Don't think so. That was bad.
- 12:00No, yeah, not on the other. I, I it's just not an exciting
- 12:04set. The reason Star basketball has
- 12:05so much appeal is 'cause there was no other card those years
- 12:08for basketball. So that and so it's the, it's
- 12:11the, you know, it's the first, it's star.
- 12:13There was there was 10 other companies that were all better.
- 12:16Well, not only that, there was only what 3000 sets made, is
- 12:20that right? For for the.
- 12:21Basketball. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:22Well, I don't know. They were limited for sure.
- 12:25And so it's just it's just a there's there's nothing else to
- 12:28do. If you want the first car to
- 12:30Jordan, you got to do the star. But in baseball, I mean,
- 12:32Griffey's got way better, way cooler looking rookies, lots of
- 12:36stars. I don't I don't see a reason for
- 12:37star to catch up now. It could could could be wrong,
- 12:40but that would be my guess. I don't know how many * you know
- 12:43Griffey's they made, but I'm assuming it was a tremendous
- 12:45amount more than the basketball basketball was.
- 12:48Literally like I think 3 was more popular and it was years
- 12:51later when the hobby was hotter. So yeah, there's probably a lot
- 12:53more star baseball, you're right.
- 12:54Yep, Yep, way more. All right.
- 12:56So yeah, Nope, I I do not see that at all, but who knows,
- 12:59Could happen. What's a?
- 13:01Nation idea from 90s inserts you would like to bring back.
- 13:05Me some Duncan, go nuts. Well, that that's just a you
- 13:09mean just like a one off one off brand?
- 13:12I wish they would do more sick, just natural refractors, not all
- 13:16the pumpkin swirly discos, NUM NUM spice, whatever they make,
- 13:20you know what I mean? NUM NUM spice, that's a new one.
- 13:23That's a new one. But I wish they would just do
- 13:26straight beautiful refractors and or, or atomic refractors and
- 13:31kind of go back to the go back to what got them started in it
- 13:34and just really cool design work like die cuts or different
- 13:37things like that, you know, yeah, one of my favorite cards
- 13:41is like Kobe Bowman's best atomic refractor die cut.
- 13:46That's just an awesome, amazing looking card.
- 13:49So is the one that's not die cut.
- 13:50It's just cool looking. Yeah, I'm trying to think.
- 13:53I mean, the 90s is the is the birth of so many new ideas in
- 13:58cards. And I'm trying to think of like
- 13:59one that hasn't stuck around really.
- 14:02They're they're all, they're all sort of sort of still around.
- 14:05Yeah. On the very basic level,
- 14:06autographs, jerseys, one O 1 serial numbering, inserts,
- 14:10parallels, refractors, these all started in the 90s and they're
- 14:13all still around. Yeah.
- 14:16I mean, maybe die cuts, die cuts.
- 14:18They they make die cuts today, but they were, they were a lot
- 14:21more clever with them back then, although they didn't, I don't
- 14:24know. Nothing jumps out at me as like
- 14:25something from the 90s that was innovative that no longer is
- 14:28around. I I think most of it stuck
- 14:30around. Need more Dunkin?
- 14:33Dunkin, Go nuts. Dunkin, go nuts.
- 14:38Yeah, All right guys, because we're on their channel, they
- 14:40love talking about snacks. So there's been a big
- 14:43controversy. Are you guys pro circus peanuts
- 14:46or anti circus peanuts as the food goes?
- 14:50I don't know what circus peanuts are.
- 14:51Is that a? They're like, no, it's circus.
- 14:54They're like orange. I think they're orange.
- 14:56You bite it. It's like a candy in the form of
- 14:58a peanut. Looks like yeah.
- 15:00It sounds horrible and I'm I'm against it.
- 15:03I I actually really enjoy circus peanuts but but they get hard
- 15:08very fast so you got to eat them fresh or not let them sit.
- 15:11Out, yeah, they can. They can get.
- 15:13They can get stale like easily. They can get rock hard, dude,
- 15:16but as long as you eat them and they're they're soft and good,
- 15:18They're pretty tasty. I like them, yeah.
- 15:21Candy's overrated. I'd rather agree.
- 15:24Cookie. Yeah, or ice cream ice.
- 15:27Cream for sure. Yeah, I only eat vegetables and
- 15:30proteins. Vegetables.
- 15:32I take vegetables over candy. Well, you know, I, I don't know
- 15:35man, vegetables tough, because I don't want to eat my food's
- 15:38food, you know what I mean? And endanger the animals.
- 15:40So I don't know. You want to live with?
- 15:42I'll stick with. I'll stick with bacon and and
- 15:44and steak. Good way to die young.
- 15:51All right. Last, last, last one.
- 15:52Oreos are you? Are you like Oreos?
- 15:55And what type of Oreo do you buy?
- 15:57Oh, chocolate. The chocolate center soaked in
- 16:00milk. Done.
- 16:02Oreos are solid, obviously. I don't know how anyone could
- 16:05think otherwise. What are you?
- 16:06Are you single? Are you double stuff?
- 16:08Are you? Triple stuff, keep it, keep it
- 16:10simple. Single.
- 16:11You know, I don't need the really, I don't need the disco,
- 16:13Swirlyball, Oreo, standard silver refractors, fine.
- 16:20That's horrible. I I gotta get, I gotta get the
- 16:22ones with the peanut. They have like a peanut butter
- 16:24filling in the middle. I've had it and then and then I
- 16:27dip them in peanut butter. Oh jeez, that's too much peanut.
- 16:30Butter bro. I love peanut butter so.
- 16:35I mean, this is my favorite candy, so I can't argue with
- 16:38that, but that's a lot of peanut butter.
- 16:40Yeah. Fair enough.
- 16:41Now so to answer that question, single stuffed if it's the
- 16:44normal cream filling and double stuffed if it's the chocolate
- 16:47filling, it's it's epic. So yeah, that's my answer all.
- 16:50Right. We're all different on this one.
- 16:52That's right. All right, all right, that's it
- 16:55for our questions from the from the viewers.
- 16:57But yeah, thank you to the viewers for for leaving the
- 17:01questions. Thank you to Sports Card Network
- 17:03for hosting us here. Appreciate that.
- 17:05And we'll, yeah, check out our podcast Collector investor
- 17:07podcast and we will see you all next time.
- 17:10Is that something we say on here?
- 17:12Yeah. I don't know, but I have one
- 17:13last little. Not ready to go yet.
- 17:15OK, Yeah, this. Is possibly the greatest picture
- 17:18of all. Time.
- 17:18No, we already did. Oh jeez.
- 17:21Oh, yeah. Look at that.
- 17:22That is Obi Wan Snowmanson right there.
- 17:26Look at that. Look at that.
- 17:29Anyways, that's. All nobody.
- 17:30Wants to see that. It's arguably the best picture
- 17:33ever discovered, but probably not.
- 17:34That's that's my vote. Thank you for watching this
- 17:36episode of Collector Investor Podcast, Texas Snowman and Chris
- 17:40Sewell in that order. And feel free to check out the
- 17:43description below to see how to reach out to us directly and our
- 17:47other social media platforms and the auction house.
- 17:50See you next time.
