- 0:05Speaker 1: NFL Now is a production of the NFL in partnership
- 0:08Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio. Night number one was so much fun, we
- 0:21Speaker 1: decided to come back and do it again. Night number
- 0:23Speaker 1: two is one hour away of the twenty twenty three
- 0:26Speaker 1: NFL Scouting Combine, presented to you by Noble. On a rainy, cloudy,
- 0:31Speaker 1: ugly day here in Indianapolis, it is warm and wonderful inside. However,
- 0:35Speaker 1: at Lucas Oil Stadium, cal Vns last night, pretty good
- 0:41Speaker 1: looking workout here as we see these guys file in
- 0:44Speaker 1: Mark Mayor at the tight ends will be working out
- 0:46Speaker 1: on Saturday. They have been doing their stuff today on
- 0:50Speaker 1: the podium earlier today. And the d lineman that worked
- 0:54Speaker 1: out last night actually moved to the bench press today
- 1:00Speaker 1: because we changed up the schedule a little bit. I
- 1:03Speaker 1: was Massie Smith, a massive defensive tackle from Michigan. Thirty
- 1:08Speaker 1: four rests on the bench to night. We're going to
- 1:13Speaker 1: see the defensive on this deal here at Lucas Oil Stadium.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Last year, for example, we had a Rookie of the
- 1:21Speaker 1: Year in that group. We had Sauce Guard and we
- 1:24Speaker 1: had Tarik Wooland who was tied for the NFL lead
- 1:27Speaker 1: with six interceptions. Maybe we see performances like that today
- 1:31Speaker 1: that lead to great rookie years in twenty twenty three,
- 1:34Speaker 1: and it filled out with the combine. I mean Andrews Ciciliano,
- 1:36Speaker 1: That is Tom Pelicero, this is Ian Rappaport. How many
- 1:39Speaker 1: times can you bench to twenty five? Negative one? Negative one?
- 1:44Speaker 1: Can you do it? Tom Nolly? What does negative one mean?
- 1:47Speaker 1: What does that means? You through? Like the bar crushes? Yeah? No,
- 1:50Speaker 1: you You try to lift it up and it just
- 1:52Speaker 1: goes backwards in the bar crushes you. Yeah, okay, or
- 1:55Speaker 1: chokes me to death. Yeah, let's hope that does not happen. Yeah.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I was Ian on the peloton this morning into Jim,
- 1:59Speaker 1: and he looked as close to death as anyone I've
- 2:01Speaker 1: ever seen. Now I came through the other side, so
- 2:04Speaker 1: let's get here. I am. But it was not great.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I bet I can get two reps too, I respect
- 2:10Speaker 1: No running the forty, that's fantastic. I would have you know.
- 2:14Speaker 1: I don't think you could do one rep? Are you
- 2:15Speaker 1: kidding me? Right now? No way to twenty five? No
- 2:19Speaker 1: chan literally, no chant, true story, and you're not gonna
- 2:22Speaker 1: believe me. I once did ten. I absolutely see that
- 2:27Speaker 1: yet shorter arm, so the bar doesn't have to go
- 2:29Speaker 1: very far. Tiny arms. Yep, it's got Paoli's off stage saying,
- 2:33Speaker 1: no way, it's not about me. It's about the quarterbacks
- 2:35Speaker 1: they work out on Saturday. We'll get to the dbs
- 2:37Speaker 1: coming up shortly, but let's get to the quarterbacks are
- 2:40Speaker 1: on the podium earlier today. Yeah. I've been this size,
- 2:44Speaker 1: you know, respectfully, my whole life. Um, you know, I
- 2:47Speaker 1: I know who I am. I know I know what
- 2:49Speaker 1: I can do, and you know, for me, you know,
- 2:52Speaker 1: I think it's fair. You know, everyone can conspeculate and
- 2:54Speaker 1: ask whatever questions are necessary. But you know, I'm going
- 2:56Speaker 1: to continue to control it. I can control. I keep
- 2:58Speaker 1: working my hardest to put myself in good position, and
- 3:00Speaker 1: I'm confident in myself. I know what I can do,
- 3:02Speaker 1: and you know, I'm just excited to get to that
- 3:04Speaker 1: next level. I'm gonna think about the bear at one.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Is that a weird thing to think about that? I mean,
- 3:09Speaker 1: I don't want to go there. I mean, that's that's
- 3:11Speaker 1: his team. So but I mean, I think I gotta
- 3:13Speaker 1: do I gonna do my thing. I gotta go build
- 3:15Speaker 1: my legacy. And I know he and he's route me,
- 3:17Speaker 1: he text me yesterday morning. So me and him are
- 3:20Speaker 1: brothers for life. I see myself, you know, I want
- 3:23Speaker 1: to be a legend, you know. I want to be
- 3:24Speaker 1: like Patrick Mahomes. I want to be like Tom Brady.
- 3:26Speaker 1: I want to be one of the Grace. You know,
- 3:27Speaker 1: I will be one of the Grace, you though, because
- 3:29Speaker 1: I'm wanting to work that hard and get to that point.
- 3:31Speaker 1: And so to answer that question, you know, I feel
- 3:34Speaker 1: like I'm gonna be one of the Grays in the
- 3:35Speaker 1: next few years. All right, So confidence a theme from
- 3:39Speaker 1: these quarterbacks who we are going to see work out
- 3:42Speaker 1: on Saturday. Now, Brace Young's not gonna throw. We've reported
- 3:44Speaker 1: that it's likely going to happen at one of the
- 3:47Speaker 1: Alabama Pro days. The topic, however, in today, right out
- 3:50Speaker 1: of the gate, when all the reporters swarmed around the podium,
- 3:54Speaker 1: was his height. I thought he handled it pretty well. Like, guys,
- 3:57Speaker 1: look this as my height. I've played pretty well. I'm
- 3:59Speaker 1: not gonna change. It's not like I'm all of a
- 4:00Speaker 1: sudden gonna be six two when when I get measured
- 4:03Speaker 1: on Saturday. Right, And I'm just say there's gonna be
- 4:05Speaker 1: a lot of discussion about like what is he going
- 4:07Speaker 1: to be? Is it gonna be five ten, five ten
- 4:09Speaker 1: and a half, five to eleven? He is what he is.
- 4:12Speaker 1: It doesn't matter. He's not six foot five, He's not
- 4:14Speaker 1: justin Herbert as it stands now, I mean, I've talked
- 4:18Speaker 1: to a lot of teams about this. Obviously, a lot
- 4:20Speaker 1: of teams have spoken to Bryce Runs. Plenty of teams
- 4:23Speaker 1: in the top ten have done the evaluations. The height
- 4:26Speaker 1: is a thing, the late is a thing. It matters,
- 4:29Speaker 1: but it doesn't matter enough from the people I've spoke
- 4:32Speaker 1: with to knock him out of the number one spot.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Quarterbacks can be smaller nowadays. We've seen a couple of
- 4:37Speaker 1: Kyler Murray obviously probably the best example, best and latest example.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Now he has played at an incredibly high level of Alabama.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Doesn't seem like his height has really been a detriment.
- 4:47Speaker 1: So it's a thing. I get it. But if it's
- 4:50Speaker 1: not changing his status, it just gives some teams something
- 4:53Speaker 1: to think about, like, Okay, the height has not been
- 4:56Speaker 1: a disqualifier for quarterbacks. In the last handful address, Baker
- 4:59Speaker 1: Mayfield went number one, Kylin Murray went number one. The
- 5:03Speaker 1: issue with Bryce Young that I have from scouts is
- 5:06Speaker 1: more so about he's a smaller framed guy. He was
- 5:09Speaker 1: listed at one hundred ninety four pounds at Alabama scouts
- 5:12Speaker 1: who went through the school back in the fall. We're
- 5:13Speaker 1: told he was playing around one eighty six. Now, he
- 5:16Speaker 1: said on the podium this morning, he's bulked up to
- 5:18Speaker 1: closer to two hundred pounds. But remember at Alabama you
- 5:22Speaker 1: were playing behind five NFL caliber offensive lineman. He barely
- 5:26Speaker 1: got hit last season, and he still suffered an ac
- 5:29Speaker 1: joint injury that did impact him over the second half
- 5:31Speaker 1: of the season. That's not to say that there's a
- 5:33Speaker 1: durability issue with Bryce Young. It's just quarterbacks under two
- 5:37Speaker 1: hundred pounds. There's not a real track record in the NFL,
- 5:40Speaker 1: particularly drafting one really high. So you've got to be
- 5:43Speaker 1: convinced that all the other skills he brings to the table,
- 5:45Speaker 1: and you see him making these throws, the arm, the anticipation,
- 5:48Speaker 1: the ability to get the ball out can make up
- 5:51Speaker 1: for the fact that this is not somebody you want
- 5:53Speaker 1: standing in there and taking a bunch of hits. I've
- 5:54Speaker 1: heard multiple times he's the best quarterback period. If you
- 5:57Speaker 1: were sixty three, we wouldn't be half of this conversation.
- 5:59Speaker 1: He's number one. He probably still and should and will
- 6:01Speaker 1: be number one regardless. The question is how many hits
- 6:04Speaker 1: can you take? Well, a six five quarterback is not
- 6:06Speaker 1: impervious to injury. You can take hits, you can get
- 6:09Speaker 1: hurt as well. It's how many hits can you take?
- 6:13Speaker 1: Lower will lass to chair like we lowered mine, so
- 6:15Speaker 1: I wouldn't be towering over you. Guys. We're not going
- 6:17Speaker 1: to do the whole ian that at the chair again
- 6:19Speaker 1: like we did yesterday. Oh that was funny. I left.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I let's get to CJ. Strout. I thought it was
- 6:23Speaker 1: notable today that you had a guy saying I don't
- 6:25Speaker 1: want to go to the team that has the number
- 6:27Speaker 1: one overall pick. You rarely rarely hear it. But I
- 6:30Speaker 1: also think there was something endearing about it, and that
- 6:33Speaker 1: is Justin Fields is my guy. I'm not big footing him.
- 6:36Speaker 1: He's not a running back. He's a really good quarterback.
- 6:39Speaker 1: That's I thought that was interesting too. And I mean,
- 6:41Speaker 1: obviously CJ. Strout, very informed of the situation, knows the landscape,
- 6:45Speaker 1: knows that the Bears seem to have committed see pretty
- 6:48Speaker 1: clearly to Justin Fields this week. They also have the
- 6:51Speaker 1: same agent and David Mullill get up both the higher
- 6:53Speaker 1: state guys. Clearly he knows and he's right, that is
- 6:55Speaker 1: Field's team. I think if CJ's Stroud goes number one,
- 6:59Speaker 1: it's probably not going to be for the Bears. Certainly
- 7:01Speaker 1: trading the pick seems to be the more likely option.
- 7:04Speaker 1: And yeah, we are going to see We're gonna see
- 7:06Speaker 1: him out there this week. When you see him throw it,
- 7:08Speaker 1: probably not going to see him do much else till
- 7:11Speaker 1: and assuming he does it all as Ohio State Pro Day.
- 7:14Speaker 1: But you know, we talk about Bryce Young being a
- 7:16Speaker 1: likely number one selection. It seems to me CJ. Stroud
- 7:20Speaker 1: me I see maybe the upper hand in the second
- 7:22Speaker 1: quarterback take it. It's certainly not been firmly decided, but
- 7:25Speaker 1: either way, Tom, it's pretty clear we're gonna get quarterback
- 7:28Speaker 1: quarterback one two and maybe one two, three, And talking
- 7:32Speaker 1: to the scouts two about CJ. Stroud a big part
- 7:34Speaker 1: of this. And you don't want to have past players
- 7:38Speaker 1: from the same school influencing your thinking. Everyone's an individual,
- 7:41Speaker 1: but the quarterbacks who have come out of Ohio State
- 7:44Speaker 1: read the field, they see it. They play a little
- 7:46Speaker 1: bit differently than everybody else. And that's something that you know,
- 7:48Speaker 1: we had John Beck up here earlier. You talk to
- 7:50Speaker 1: some of the quarterback coaches who work with these guys
- 7:52Speaker 1: through the process. It's not that CJ. Strouder, Justin Fields
- 7:55Speaker 1: or whoever doesn't have the bandwidth for it or they
- 7:58Speaker 1: can't process quickly enough. A lot of it is they're
- 8:00Speaker 1: taught to read it differently. Even watching those highlights right there,
- 8:02Speaker 1: it's a lot of the quick play action. But first read,
- 8:06Speaker 1: it's when you have to get into the NFL and
- 8:07Speaker 1: you go through actual NFL progressions, how are you able
- 8:09Speaker 1: to adjust? No question, c J. Strout is a really
- 8:11Speaker 1: talented player. Sorry, jump in. That's why it's so nice
- 8:15Speaker 1: to see what Luke Getzy has done in Chicago with
- 8:17Speaker 1: Justin Fields being like, you know what, that may be
- 8:19Speaker 1: the case for a house day quarterbacks. I'm going to
- 8:21Speaker 1: make this work and get the best out of them.
- 8:23Speaker 1: And that's a good sign for c Shad's future. And
- 8:26Speaker 1: the Bears do believe in Justin Fields. Now. Of course,
- 8:28Speaker 1: there's gonna be a ton of talk and there already
- 8:30Speaker 1: is about what potentially could happen with the number one
- 8:32Speaker 1: pick if they don't fall in love with any of
- 8:34Speaker 1: the position players and they can't trade down. Do they
- 8:36Speaker 1: stand in and take a quarterback? When you're drafting number one,
- 8:39Speaker 1: you never want to be there again, so you have
- 8:41Speaker 1: a scenario for everything. But I have not gotten any
- 8:45Speaker 1: indication in talking to people that the Bears have doubts
- 8:48Speaker 1: about what Justin Fields can be. He's obviously very dynamic
- 8:51Speaker 1: as a playmaker as a runner, can throw the football
- 8:54Speaker 1: to go to that second Green Bay game last year,
- 8:56Speaker 1: you see what they think his upside is. Meanwhile, I
- 8:58Speaker 1: got a guy and Anthony Richardson, who is a traits
- 9:01Speaker 1: player at a position that generally is not drafted off
- 9:04Speaker 1: of trade, a short term producer at Florida. But he's
- 9:08Speaker 1: gonna come out here and throw. He's going to do
- 9:10Speaker 1: everything every drill and has the opportunity here because c J.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Stroud is not going to do any of the testing
- 9:16Speaker 1: or the drills, neither is Bryce Young. Anthony Richardson potentially
- 9:19Speaker 1: can put up some crazy numbers out here. He's going
- 9:22Speaker 1: to run a forty yard dash, so is Mallie Cunningham
- 9:25Speaker 1: from Louisville. There have only been I got an updated
- 9:27Speaker 1: stab on this from NFL Research. Four quarterbacks in the
- 9:30Speaker 1: quarterback group in combined history, who have ever run a
- 9:33Speaker 1: forty yard dash officially in under four point five seconds.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Only one of those, Robert Griffin, the third ever actually
- 9:40Speaker 1: plagued quarterback in the NFL. So you got two guys
- 9:43Speaker 1: in Anthony Richardson as well as Millie Kunynham, the potentially
- 9:47Speaker 1: can add to that list when they get out there
- 9:49Speaker 1: and run the forty. And had that other Louivill quarterback
- 9:52Speaker 1: never ran a forty, we get another good pay. Imagine
- 9:54Speaker 1: if he had, he didn't right rand four four five
- 9:57Speaker 1: in his protect There you go, and that would be
- 9:58Speaker 1: a Lamar Jackson in twenty eighteen. Oh, I thought you
- 10:00Speaker 1: Matt Justin justine four five, Well the other Louisville Look, yeah,
- 10:06Speaker 1: Mr Jackson, I think never in a right, I don't,
- 10:08Speaker 1: I don't did not relieve he did. That was twenty eighteen.
- 10:11Speaker 1: What I was saying you mentioned, argis what happens when
- 10:13Speaker 1: you turned that way. I can't really hear you, but
- 10:15Speaker 1: it's fine, my bad. I just I'm trying to read
- 10:17Speaker 1: lips here. I'm talking about a lot of quarterbacks in
- 10:19Speaker 1: that segment. The RG three is twenty twelve, and that
- 10:21Speaker 1: you you also had quarterbacks go one two Andrew Luck
- 10:25Speaker 1: here to Indianapolis and then RG three two to Washington.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Thank you guys. And if I mentioned something about Witherspoon
- 10:38Speaker 1: Castro kid up Witherspoon Big check out Party, want Winnerspoon.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Witherspoon that with his books, the brass Roos's branch on
- 10:48Speaker 1: the Blitz Branch's probably on defense. Anyway, the MBP of
- 10:52Speaker 1: this game and that is battered away Joey Porter junior,
- 10:57Speaker 1: Joey Porner junior with the Temple Antonia Jackson takes him
- 11:02Speaker 1: down of the backfield. Look, the tight ends are really
- 11:11Speaker 1: really good. The edge players are really really good. It
- 11:14Speaker 1: is a fantastic group of defensive backs, particularly at corner.
- 11:20Speaker 1: And it's the dbs who takes center stage this evening. Now,
- 11:24Speaker 1: Devin Witherspoon is not going to work out. He is
- 11:26Speaker 1: Daniel Jeremiah's number one corner. If Joey Porter's name sounds familiar, yes,
- 11:32Speaker 1: it is the son of the former Steelers linebacker, the
- 11:35Speaker 1: former Steelers coach as well. Joey Porter said he grew
- 11:39Speaker 1: up with Mike Tomlinskin. He would love to go to
- 11:41Speaker 1: Pittsburgh Christian Gonzalez, Tom Pellicero's book with him yesterday. It
- 11:45Speaker 1: is a pretty good group, a group that is now
- 11:46Speaker 1: coming in here to Lucas Oil Stadium getting ready to
- 11:50Speaker 1: do their thing. Take of the field. We have the
- 11:52Speaker 1: kickers and the punters working out earlier today with the
- 11:55Speaker 1: Special Team's coaches. Within the past hour. Defensive backs are
- 11:58Speaker 1: now in the room again twenty seven years doing this
- 12:02Speaker 1: evaluation thing at NFL Front Office is got Pioli. As
- 12:05Speaker 1: we see these guys tonight, what does it take to
- 12:08Speaker 1: be an NFL corner? You know right now, Andrew, it's big,
- 12:13Speaker 1: and it's tall, and it's fast. That's all that people
- 12:17Speaker 1: are talking about. Right It's good to be it's sexy
- 12:19Speaker 1: to be big. But right now, depending on the system
- 12:22Speaker 1: that you play and whether it's zone, whether you're nickel,
- 12:25Speaker 1: whether it's man, that depends on what you are as
- 12:28Speaker 1: a corner. What you need to do is you do
- 12:30Speaker 1: need to have size and length. You need to have speed.
- 12:33Speaker 1: If you are lacking speed, then you need to have length.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Because we hear people talk about length all the time.
- 12:38Speaker 1: What length means is if you have long arms, you
- 12:41Speaker 1: can actually improve the time of your speed because you're
- 12:44Speaker 1: closing the distance by using long arms. You need to
- 12:47Speaker 1: have number one ball skills because a lot of people
- 12:50Speaker 1: who can get themselves in position to make plays, Andrew,
- 12:52Speaker 1: they can cover people, but they just can't make a
- 12:55Speaker 1: play in the ball. So when you hear coaches and
- 12:57Speaker 1: scouts talking about ball skills, at the end of the day,
- 13:00Speaker 1: you can be big, long, fast, quick, agile, all that,
- 13:03Speaker 1: but if you don't have ball skills to make plays
- 13:05Speaker 1: on the ball, it's going to be a problem. Now,
- 13:07Speaker 1: the other thing I do want to mention is this
- 13:09Speaker 1: everyone talks about athleticism, reactive athleticisms. Athleticism is so critical
- 13:14Speaker 1: because you need to react to the movements of the
- 13:16Speaker 1: wide receiver. You can run, you can be quick, but
- 13:19Speaker 1: if you can't do that in terms of the transition,
- 13:22Speaker 1: you're not going to be able to cover. So athleticism
- 13:25Speaker 1: has to be reactive athleticism. And the other thing you
- 13:27Speaker 1: need is when those receivers were tight ends change direction.
- 13:31Speaker 1: You need to have some balance as well, Andrew, and
- 13:34Speaker 1: you need some versatility. You need some corners to play
- 13:36Speaker 1: both inside outside, and it goes for the safeties here
- 13:40Speaker 1: as well. Some guys are deep, some guys are up
- 13:42Speaker 1: more of the box. Look what Jalen Petrie did last
- 13:44Speaker 1: year for the Texans. He was basically a linebacker and
- 13:47Speaker 1: a torpedo in the back. Then, what does it take
- 13:49Speaker 1: these days to play safety? Well, what it's always taken
- 13:52Speaker 1: is intelligence, vision, and instincts and the ability to close
- 13:56Speaker 1: on the ball. So when you're in the deep part
- 13:58Speaker 1: of the field, even if it's a deep half or
- 14:00Speaker 1: a deep middle, you need to be able to see,
- 14:03Speaker 1: have anticipation, be able to react. You need to be
- 14:06Speaker 1: able to stick your foot in the ground, change direction
- 14:08Speaker 1: and get on and make a play. Again. You need
- 14:11Speaker 1: to be athletic, you need to be fast, but there
- 14:13Speaker 1: needs to be some anticipation as well. Andrew, So to me,
- 14:17Speaker 1: the other thing that I could never compromise in terms
- 14:21Speaker 1: of the safety position, and one of my favorite safeties
- 14:24Speaker 1: of all time, Eric Berry, who redrafted number five overall.
- 14:27Speaker 1: He had everything I just mentioned, but Eric's ability not
- 14:30Speaker 1: only to be smart, but to communicate the things that
- 14:33Speaker 1: he knew he had to communicate exceptional. Rodney Harrison was
- 14:37Speaker 1: another one. You know, Eric Berry was in the middle
- 14:39Speaker 1: of the field. Rodney Harrison was a little bit closer.
- 14:42Speaker 1: But they have to be able to communicate because they're
- 14:44Speaker 1: in a position where they can see everything and they
- 14:47Speaker 1: have to let other people know what's going on. And
- 14:49Speaker 1: when they have that ability, you can play for a long,
- 14:52Speaker 1: long long time. I had two screens going last night
- 15:03Speaker 1: here at the combine. I have our NFL Network feed.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I also have the NFL Plus feed, which is fantastic.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Tonight it's going to be Sauce Gardner, Jordan Poyer, and
- 15:11Speaker 1: Kenny Moore of the Colton his home building telling you
- 15:15Speaker 1: what they think of these dbs. It's NFL Plus players
- 15:18Speaker 1: only sign up tonight NFL Plus plus dot NFL dot com. Again,
- 15:22Speaker 1: it is plus NFL dot com. As we are almost
- 15:27Speaker 1: ready for a night number two here of a combine
- 15:31Speaker 1: with the defensive facts on the field on a rainy
- 15:34Speaker 1: day in Indianapolis. We are warm and dry inside here
- 15:37Speaker 1: on the concourse above the field at Lucas Oil. Andrew
- 15:40Speaker 1: Ceciliano always a pleasure to have from Football Morning at
- 15:44Speaker 1: America on NBC, the Great Peter King. It's good to
- 15:47Speaker 1: see you, sir, Andrew Green, to be with you. We
- 15:49Speaker 1: have spent a lot of time talking about these quarterbacks
- 15:51Speaker 1: when we do not see until Saturday. Evaluating these guys
- 15:55Speaker 1: is one thing trying to figure out where they go.
- 15:58Speaker 1: We still got to get to free agency because that
- 16:01Speaker 1: is a huge part of it. Derek Carr is already
- 16:04Speaker 1: a free agent. What you heard about where he might
- 16:06Speaker 1: end up. I think that's a really interesting question from
- 16:10Speaker 1: the standpoint of I think a lot of people are
- 16:15Speaker 1: waiting for the Jets to make a decision, and the
- 16:18Speaker 1: Jets have to wait for Aaron Rodgers to make it.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Is that the first domino that has to fall. I
- 16:24Speaker 1: think Aaron. I think teams have to know if Aaron
- 16:28Speaker 1: Rodgers is going to play. Everyone's assuming that Aaron Rodgers,
- 16:32Speaker 1: who could make sixty million dollars for six months of work,
- 16:36Speaker 1: probably isn't rich enough to pass that up. But who knows.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers is a different guy. So my feeling is
- 16:45Speaker 1: that the Jets will make that first decision, and if
- 16:49Speaker 1: they keep getting put off by the Packers on Aaron Rodgers,
- 16:55Speaker 1: they may go to Derek Carr. I think they're gonna
- 16:57Speaker 1: end up. They would like to end up, in my opinion,
- 17:00Speaker 1: with one of those two, but probably they'd rather end up,
- 17:03Speaker 1: especially the owner. Just my gut feeling with Aaron Rodgers,
- 17:08Speaker 1: and that seems to be the feeling around town, it's
- 17:11Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers. But if Aaron doesn't want to come here,
- 17:13Speaker 1: let's go try to get Derek Carr. Meantime, Derek has
- 17:16Speaker 1: to kind of wait. Everyone kind of has to wait
- 17:19Speaker 1: for Aaron Rodgers. Do you have any idea what does
- 17:23Speaker 1: your gut tell you, Peter King, that Aaron Rodgers is
- 17:26Speaker 1: going to do? I mean, my gut tells me you'll play,
- 17:29Speaker 1: But I don't know in Green Bay. Does he want
- 17:31Speaker 1: to come back to Green Bay? I think I think
- 17:36Speaker 1: once he finds out and he probably pretty much knows
- 17:41Speaker 1: now that the Packers really would like to play Jordan Love.
- 17:45Speaker 1: It's an absolute, total instant replay of fifteen years ago
- 17:49Speaker 1: when the Packers in Aaron, after three years of Aaron
- 17:54Speaker 1: Rodgers sitting on the bench, gave the job to Aaron Rodgers,
- 18:00Speaker 1: you know, over Brett Farve. The circumstances are a little
- 18:03Speaker 1: bit different. But this year, I think the Packers are
- 18:06Speaker 1: ready to play Jordan Love and to be absolutely all in.
- 18:10Speaker 1: I think one of the things that the Packers obviously
- 18:13Speaker 1: have wanted is Aaron Rodgers to be a part of
- 18:16Speaker 1: the offseason program more than he has been. Willie this year,
- 18:20Speaker 1: I don't know will they say to him, we want
- 18:23Speaker 1: you to stay, but only if you'll be a part
- 18:26Speaker 1: of the off season program, which you can't do by
- 18:30Speaker 1: NFL PA rules, by Union rules. But you can at
- 18:34Speaker 1: least get a feeling from Rogers over whether he is
- 18:37Speaker 1: going to want to be involved in the offseason program.
- 18:41Speaker 1: And I think when you have a young team with
- 18:43Speaker 1: a lot of young weapons, I think it's important for
- 18:46Speaker 1: your quarterback to be involved. And I do as well.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Most teams would say the exact same thing. My dilemma
- 18:51Speaker 1: is this, let's say, on the Jets or the Raiders,
- 18:53Speaker 1: or whomever wants to get in that sweepstakes, if Aaron
- 18:55Speaker 1: Rodgers is made available, what do you give up knowing that,
- 18:59Speaker 1: regardless of how he may feel right now, we may
- 19:02Speaker 1: go through this entire thing next year. Do you need
- 19:05Speaker 1: a multi year commitment from the only way if I
- 19:08Speaker 1: were the Jets, the only way I would do this
- 19:10Speaker 1: is to get a multi year commitment from for him
- 19:13Speaker 1: to tell you to look you in the eye, I'm
- 19:14Speaker 1: in for two years. Otherwise it's just a means. To me,
- 19:19Speaker 1: it doesn't make any sense to just rent Aaron Rodgers
- 19:23Speaker 1: for five or six months. I just don't think it'd
- 19:27Speaker 1: be smart. I have about a minute remaining here. March
- 19:29Speaker 1: seven is the deadline for the Ravens to if they
- 19:32Speaker 1: don't have a deal, use the tag on Lamar Jackson.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I am fascinated, fascinated to see if they are willing
- 19:39Speaker 1: to put the non exclusive tag on him and say, Lamar,
- 19:43Speaker 1: go ahead and see if you can find the deal
- 19:45Speaker 1: that you are seeking. Andrew. There's so many weird parts
- 19:47Speaker 1: of this story, but one of them is that this
- 19:50Speaker 1: is the week right here in Indianapolis that an agent
- 19:54Speaker 1: would be able to sidle up to general managers in
- 19:57Speaker 1: the NFL and say, hey, what do you think of
- 20:01Speaker 1: my guy? What do you think of my guy? And
- 20:05Speaker 1: ask them whether they might have some interest in Aaron Rodgers.
- 20:09Speaker 1: You know, off the record, you can't make any deals,
- 20:11Speaker 1: he can't do anything efficiently here. But those kind of
- 20:15Speaker 1: conversations always happened. Well, he doesn't have an agent, he
- 20:19Speaker 1: has nobody here representing him, so no team. Really, I
- 20:23Speaker 1: had a team that is interested in Lamar Jackson, ask me,
- 20:28Speaker 1: interview me for twenty minutes about Lamar Jackson and what's
- 20:32Speaker 1: he really like? What's all that? And look, they can
- 20:35Speaker 1: find other people who know him a lot better than me.
- 20:37Speaker 1: But the fact that they're doing that, they would never
- 20:40Speaker 1: be talking to a sportswriter about how I felt my
- 20:44Speaker 1: review of a player. But there just isn't a lot
- 20:48Speaker 1: of information you know about Lamar Jackson out there and
- 20:53Speaker 1: viewer to ask me, what's going to happen? This is
- 20:55Speaker 1: going to be a great story in the next few days.
- 20:57Speaker 1: My recommendation is a short term, guaranteed contract. Just do it,
- 21:03Speaker 1: and then even if you have to go through it
- 21:04Speaker 1: again in a couple of years, just get this headache
- 21:07Speaker 1: out of the way. The Ravens are built to win now,
- 21:10Speaker 1: Andrew and I don't know that they really want to
- 21:14Speaker 1: go through life without Lamar Jackson, and I think that's
- 21:18Speaker 1: that would be my recommendation to both sides. I look
- 21:21Speaker 1: forward to reading your post Combine column. Football Morning America,
- 21:25Speaker 1: Peter King always, Thanks Andrews. Peter King, everybody you're watching
- 21:33Speaker 1: NFL now. We are ten minutes away from night number
- 21:37Speaker 1: two at Lucas Oil with the defensive backs taking center stage.
- 21:43Speaker 1: A preview from our friends Peter Schreger at Charles Davis,
- 21:47Speaker 1: Chris Rhodes, Andrew. Thank you very much, Peter Schreger, Good morning,
- 21:53Speaker 1: football Charles Davis. Okay, Day two, no pressure corners and safeties.
- 21:57Speaker 1: But we had ten guys defensive lineman, edge rushers, linebackers
- 22:02Speaker 1: on Thursday clock under a four to fivety. What do
- 22:05Speaker 1: you expect to see today? Out of group one? The
- 22:07Speaker 1: corners even faster times because that's when they're supposed to do.
- 22:11Speaker 1: These are like track stars. And one of the guys
- 22:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna be watching is Emmanuel Forbes out of Mississippi State.
- 22:16Speaker 1: He's part of that group of corners. There may be
- 22:19Speaker 1: those so called elite ones. He's one of those guys
- 22:21Speaker 1: you gotta consider. He looks like DeVante Smith in terms
- 22:24Speaker 1: of build coming out of Alabama to the Philadelphi Eagles.
- 22:27Speaker 1: But he will tackle. He makes plays on the football.
- 22:30Speaker 1: How about this. In high school he had he had
- 22:33Speaker 1: twenty two interceptions, eight for touchdowns. In his college career
- 22:37Speaker 1: he has six touchdowns. Three is freshman year, three is
- 22:40Speaker 1: senior year. I'm telling you his predictive Peter. He does it,
- 22:44Speaker 1: he takes the ball away. I'm eager to watch him
- 22:46Speaker 1: in ball drills. The NFL has got everything right. We've
- 22:48Speaker 1: got everything. We needed one more of something that we need,
- 22:50Speaker 1: another Juju in the league, and we got one in
- 22:52Speaker 1: Julius Juju Brents six foot two, one hundred and ninety
- 22:57Speaker 1: eight pounds. He just jumped a forty one inch vertical
- 23:00Speaker 1: and I love his story. Charles, We've talked about it
- 23:02Speaker 1: off camera. Was at Iowa, wasn't in the playing time,
- 23:06Speaker 1: transfers to Kansas State and immediately becomes a thirteen game
- 23:09Speaker 1: starter in twenty twenty one, first team All Big Twelve,
- 23:13Speaker 1: four interceptions, which was third in the Big Twelve. Love
- 23:16Speaker 1: what Juju Brent brings to the table. And I also
- 23:19Speaker 1: like the guy's gonna be running right before him, Brian Branch,
- 23:22Speaker 1: who's not the most decorated of the Alabama defenders, but
- 23:24Speaker 1: I think he could do safety corner. He's a versatile
- 23:26Speaker 1: player who's gonna make an impact today. Yeah, he's gonna
- 23:28Speaker 1: be running with the corners. Group two is going to
- 23:30Speaker 1: be the safeties. Who's catching your eye? Yeah? Yeah. I
- 23:33Speaker 1: go to Jamie Robinson at a Florida State and you know,
- 23:35Speaker 1: Jalen Ramsey is the last superstar Florida State guy. This
- 23:38Speaker 1: is the last one who is and he's the next
- 23:40Speaker 1: one that has been a first team All acc defensive
- 23:44Speaker 1: back and back to back years. He's got the body
- 23:45Speaker 1: of work. Is he gonna light it up in the
- 23:47Speaker 1: speed drills today? I'm not sure, But this guy hits
- 23:50Speaker 1: this guy who was a leader, and he had a
- 23:51Speaker 1: standout week of practice at the Senior Bowl. If he
- 23:54Speaker 1: has a solidly at that anger, if he had a
- 23:56Speaker 1: solid performance today, I think he'd become a Day two pick.
- 23:59Speaker 1: And we'll see from there if he can go down that.
- 24:01Speaker 1: I hope there's some bad drills because you will will
- 24:03Speaker 1: hear the fault from Jamie Robinson. How about Sydney Brown.
- 24:06Speaker 1: We saw him into senior ball, and every year I'm
- 24:08Speaker 1: looking for the next Tyrant Matthew in terms of instincts,
- 24:11Speaker 1: all right, we had Antoine Winfield, we had Alijah Molden.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Now we have Sidney Brown. Six interceptions last year. This
- 24:18Speaker 1: guy finds the football. Plus he's a terrific leader, and
- 24:21Speaker 1: he will come downhill and strike you as well at
- 24:24Speaker 1: two hundred and thirteen pounds. I really liked this young
- 24:27Speaker 1: man a lot. His brother Chase a running back. We'll
- 24:29Speaker 1: see him later on in this combine, but I really
- 24:31Speaker 1: think Sidney Brown might be the next instinctive safety that
- 24:34Speaker 1: we'll see. Can I just throw out a corner. Yeah, sure,
- 24:37Speaker 1: Keiley Ringo. We saw as Georgia teammate Nolan Smith lighted
- 24:40Speaker 1: up yesterday. You're gonna do it. And by the way,
- 24:42Speaker 1: you just mentioned him as a corner, he could be
- 24:44Speaker 1: a safety too. Oh, it's gonna be fun. We'll see
- 24:46Speaker 1: you at the top of the hour. All right, boys,
- 24:51Speaker 1: it's gonna be fun. It's gonna be fast. Before that, however,
- 24:53Speaker 1: we have time for one more thing before we go.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Ian or Appaport is gonna go first the combine gets going.
- 25:01Speaker 1: One of the things we always like to see is
- 25:03Speaker 1: the hallway shots are really serious into the jewels, making
- 25:06Speaker 1: the way to the combine, ready to do some business.
- 25:08Speaker 1: That we got a shot here, really some of the
- 25:10Speaker 1: main competitors coming into this combine. Do we have it here?
- 25:14Speaker 1: Let's see that boom? Look? I mean that look at
- 25:18Speaker 1: Stacy Dale. Stacy, look at her strolling Chapnick Laura Chapnicker, producer.
- 25:23Speaker 1: I mean you want to talk about game face, Scott,
- 25:25Speaker 1: that's a game face. It looks I'm waiting for her
- 25:27Speaker 1: to shoot away the camera. That Stacy Dales is a
- 25:30Speaker 1: Hall of Famer, a legitimate Hall of Hammer And she
- 25:33Speaker 1: said on Live TV last night. I'm Canadian, damn it,
- 25:38Speaker 1: and that made the nights far better than she kid.
- 25:40Speaker 1: They were both fantastic Sharon and I as well. Scott.
- 25:43Speaker 1: What do you got one more thing to me? You
- 25:45Speaker 1: know I earlier, earlier I talked about one HBCU player.
- 25:48Speaker 1: I want to talk about another HBCU player, Isaiah Land
- 25:51Speaker 1: from Florida, A and M Universe. He showed up here,
- 25:54Speaker 1: had a very good day. Yes, not a rare day,
- 25:57Speaker 1: not exceptional day, but a very good day. And Isaiah
- 26:00Speaker 1: Land didn't measure up to the size of the other
- 26:03Speaker 1: edge rushers. But here's the thing. He can play outside
- 26:06Speaker 1: and inside. He's the Buck Buchanan FCS Player of the Year,
- 26:09Speaker 1: Defense of this year, two time All American. This guy
- 26:13Speaker 1: has nothing but production and saw him play inside at
- 26:17Speaker 1: the East West Game. Terrific young player. That's my one
- 26:20Speaker 1: more thing. Our friend Steve Smith Senior, very productive on
- 26:23Speaker 1: the field and very productive off the bill. Congratulations Steve.
- 26:26Speaker 1: The Steve Smith Family Foundation opened up today ian Charlotte,
- 26:31Speaker 1: another Smith Family behavioral health urging care center. Steve well done.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Looking forward to having amenste in Indianapolis. One of the
- 26:38Speaker 1: wide receivers on the Field on Saturday. Great stuff and
- 26:42Speaker 1: good reason here to be late for Scott for Ian,
- 26:45Speaker 1: I'm Andrew Drill. NFL Now is a production of the
