- 0:13Speaker 1: Hey, let's take the calls. Eight hundred three to two
- 0:16Speaker 1: one zero seven ten is the number eight hundred three
- 0:20Speaker 1: two one zero seven ten. Let's go to John and paramus. John,
- 0:25Speaker 1: how you doing good?
- 0:27Speaker 2: Listen?
- 0:27Speaker 4: You know I've been a Springsteen fan from day one.
- 0:30Speaker 4: I've seen him many times, loved his music and everything else.
- 0:34Speaker 4: But now, after reading the review yesterday in the Times,
- 0:38Speaker 4: you couldn't pay me to go see him. He has
- 0:42Speaker 4: really lost his way. Half of the half of the concert.
- 0:45Speaker 1: He talks well in his defense, in his defense not
- 0:49Speaker 1: just him, but when you're one of these big superstar
- 0:51Speaker 1: gods of music seventies and into the eighties, by the
- 0:55Speaker 1: time it's thirty years later, you can't get hit records anymore.
- 0:58Speaker 1: You're totally a element. All you are is you can
- 1:02Speaker 1: do concerts. That's all you can do. You'll be the
- 1:03Speaker 1: elder statesman doing the concerts. But they can't. They all
- 1:06Speaker 1: try to get back in the game with a hit
- 1:08Speaker 1: record or try to latch onto something. Why were you
- 1:11Speaker 1: a Springsteen fan back then? What was it about this?
- 1:14Speaker 4: Because I was younger stifty years I was. I'm from
- 1:16Speaker 4: Jersey of shifty years ago.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I loved him.
- 1:18Speaker 4: He was great. I loved his music. I'm an old
- 1:20Speaker 4: rock and roller. But god, I mean, he goes on
- 1:23Speaker 4: and if you read the review, I told my wife,
- 1:25Speaker 4: my wife is going with her girlfriend. I wouldn't go.
- 1:28Speaker 4: She's going in April. Yeah, I said. Now, I'm definitely convinced.
- 1:32Speaker 4: I wouldn't go. I wouldn't, couldn't.
- 1:33Speaker 1: But even back then it was great musically, But those
- 1:37Speaker 1: songs born to run jungle Land, yelling and screaming. What
- 1:41Speaker 1: the hell was he actually singing about? I still don't know.
- 1:44Speaker 4: I don't know. It's just the way I was. It
- 1:46Speaker 4: was just my generation.
- 1:48Speaker 5: I guess that's all right.
- 1:48Speaker 1: But what was he singing about?
- 1:51Speaker 4: Well, you have car I have cars and and girls
- 1:54Speaker 4: and working hard and work, you know, trying to get ahead.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Listen to the Beatles, I want to hold your hand.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I can understand that song, Michelle my Bell, I understand that.
- 2:04Speaker 1: But down in jungle Land, what was he singing? What
- 2:07Speaker 1: that was that all about?
- 2:08Speaker 2: That?
- 2:08Speaker 4: Well, you know the struggle life's struggle, and he never
- 2:11Speaker 4: really he struggled a little bit, and then he hasn't
- 2:13Speaker 4: struggled in forty five years.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Yeah, but life's struggle. I don't know just I mean,
- 2:18Speaker 1: all right, it's not just you. A lot of people
- 2:20Speaker 1: love Springsteen Bank then I never quite got it.
- 2:23Speaker 4: But I tell you a lot of people I know
- 2:24Speaker 4: are really not happy with him at all. A lot
- 2:27Speaker 4: of people I feel the same way about I am
- 2:30Speaker 4: about the way he used to be.
- 2:32Speaker 1: That there's that old expression, there's no fool like an
- 2:36Speaker 1: old fool.
- 2:38Speaker 4: He's a poster.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Boy for it. Yeah, that's the other thing, you know.
- 2:44Speaker 1: I guess when he started and he wore those you know,
- 2:47Speaker 1: those T shirts and what's that stuff around his wrist,
- 2:50Speaker 1: those wristbands and the motorcycle boots and the jeans, and
- 2:54Speaker 1: he said, but back then he was twenty five riding
- 2:56Speaker 1: the motorcycle. He's now an eighty year old, multi, multi
- 2:59Speaker 1: multi millionaire. You don't need to wear all that stuff.
- 3:03Speaker 2: You know.
- 3:03Speaker 1: He acts like he's about to jump on a motorcycle
- 3:05Speaker 1: any moment, and he need like an orthopedic seat on
- 3:08Speaker 1: the motorcycle nowadays. Let's go to rich In Myrtle Beach, Rich.
- 3:12Speaker 1: How you doing?
- 3:13Speaker 2: Hey? Thanks Mark. You know he brought up a good
- 3:15Speaker 2: point here, Bruce Springsteen. They're using a Bruce Springsteen song
- 3:19Speaker 2: born in the USA for the ACLU commercials. I'm singing
- 3:23Speaker 2: on Fox News this morning on TV about protect birthright
- 3:27Speaker 2: citizenship and has showing all these immigrants who were born
- 3:30Speaker 2: in the USA playing his lousy music. And another band
- 3:33Speaker 2: that used to preach to everybody. I quit going to
- 3:35Speaker 2: see Cosy Still Snash thirty years ago because all they
- 3:38Speaker 2: did was preaching, lecture you on being a lunatic and
- 3:41Speaker 2: stuff like that.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Okay, but that they were like Woodstock type hippies back then.
- 3:45Speaker 1: They're supposed to do that. But it's now twenty twenty
- 3:48Speaker 1: six and Bruce Springsteen, I mean, be honest, did you've
- 3:51Speaker 1: listened to all those music? Right? What can you understand
- 3:54Speaker 1: half the things he's singing?
- 3:56Speaker 2: No, I never got Bruce Springsteen. I never got Dave
- 3:58Speaker 2: Matthews either, you know, I can't from the Beatles generation,
- 4:01Speaker 2: the motown, I mean, the sixties, seventies, early eighties was
- 4:04Speaker 2: great music. And then you know the old time country.
- 4:07Speaker 2: This new country is brutal too. That's no good. Yeah,
- 4:09Speaker 2: I mean good, but I know exactly. Here's one to
- 4:12Speaker 2: remember this Marcus Sopranos, when Chris's girlfriend Adriana has her
- 4:17Speaker 2: old high school boyfriend with his band and they're in
- 4:20Speaker 2: the studio playing the same drudge over and over again,
- 4:23Speaker 2: and then producer says, how come you can't play something
- 4:26Speaker 2: with a hook like I want to hold your hand?
- 4:28Speaker 2: It starts with the hook, and you guys do something
- 4:30Speaker 2: about that.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Yeah, well, Springs he could do it. Dancing in the
- 4:33Speaker 1: dark had a great hook and uh, yep, hey, and
- 4:37Speaker 1: I was a DJ. I remember we'd played jungle Land.
- 4:40Speaker 1: You know why because it was like twelve minutes. It
- 4:42Speaker 1: was a back then, it was a way you could
- 4:44Speaker 1: go to the men's room. But thanks for calling. Let's
- 4:48Speaker 1: go to Mike in Florida. Mike, how you doing, good morning, Mark, Yes, Mike.
- 4:54Speaker 5: Let's they called that botox is live in Springsteen's brain.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Why do people keep saying at botox or plastic surgery.
- 5:00Speaker 5: He look at him. He looks like he's stretched like
- 5:03Speaker 5: a drumskin stretched over a.
- 5:08Speaker 1: I think the guy's entitled to a refund. He looks
- 5:10Speaker 1: even older.
- 5:10Speaker 5: Now, I think so. I had a quick sixty minute
- 5:14Speaker 5: story when I worked over at the CBS studios over there.
- 5:18Speaker 5: Every late in the week on Thursday Friday night, there'd
- 5:20Speaker 5: be a studio set up all dark with an easel
- 5:24Speaker 5: lit and that's where they shot the clock.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:27Speaker 5: They shot it live every every week for the show
- 5:30Speaker 5: on Sunday.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Yeah, well it was back then. It was a great show.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Mike Wallace, Morley Safer, who am I? Who else? Harry Reasoner,
- 5:38Speaker 1: Kenny Yeah.
- 5:40Speaker 5: Yeah, you'd see those guys doddling around the studio every
- 5:43Speaker 5: once in a while. It would be like Loyalty walking by,
- 5:45Speaker 5: you know, everybody would be in hushed tones as they
- 5:48Speaker 5: walked by.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I love Mike Wallace was a great friend
- 5:51Speaker 1: and he was one of our most a little crusty,
- 5:56Speaker 1: but yeah, all right, thanks for calling you, Mike Wallace.
- 5:59Speaker 1: He was one of our most regular guests on the
- 6:01Speaker 1: show for a million years. We used to have Andy
- 6:03Speaker 1: Rooney on all the time, although he couldn't stand me.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't exactly why, but he'd always
- 6:10Speaker 1: yell at me. And then Memory refused to come on
- 6:12Speaker 1: the air for a while, and then Mike Wallace convinced
- 6:15Speaker 1: that me he had to come back on the air,
- 6:17Speaker 1: and every time he commanding him. Only here because Mike
- 6:19Speaker 1: Wallace is making me do this. But they were great.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I mean they were like legends. Now, who's the guy?
- 6:26Speaker 1: You don't even know who these people are anymore. But
- 6:28Speaker 1: got to remember back then it was the number one
- 6:29Speaker 1: show in television. It's like sixty five million people watching it,
- 6:34Speaker 1: and you could afford to send a crew, you know,
- 6:37Speaker 1: to Antarctica to do a story. If you watch it now,
- 6:41Speaker 1: you could see they've been cutbacks. It's this tiny audience.
- 6:43Speaker 1: So if they're doing a story, it's about something in
- 6:47Speaker 1: Nayak where the crew could drive up there for an
- 6:50Speaker 1: hour and come right back. They don't have to spend
- 6:52Speaker 1: money on planes, hotels or any of that. Let's go
- 6:55Speaker 1: to Bill in Pennsylvania. Bill, how you doing Hi? Hi?
- 6:59Speaker 3: Mark?
- 7:00Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, Charles was mister a happy hour here.
- 7:03Speaker 5: Huh.
- 7:04Speaker 3: I'm sorry, I'm my throat's going out. I hope I
- 7:08Speaker 3: can speak. Yeah, yeah, I spent about a month working
- 7:13Speaker 3: with Charles Grout in North Carolina. Yeah, jeez, I'm sorry.
- 7:18Speaker 1: That's okay, that's okay, that's that mister Jim got your throat? Yeah,
- 7:25Speaker 1: go ahead, I said, that's great.
- 7:27Speaker 3: What he was drinking? Jack Daniels, not me.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, he was a Jack Daniels type.
- 7:34Speaker 3: And anyway, he had two families, which was weird.
- 7:38Speaker 1: That's right, I forgot about that. Turned out he was
- 7:40Speaker 1: a bigger mister. He used to do that feature called
- 7:44Speaker 1: on the Road where he go out on the road
- 7:47Speaker 1: and talk to Meantime, this guy had more activity on
- 7:50Speaker 1: the road. He would do stories about interesting people on
- 7:53Speaker 1: the road. Should have been doing a story about himself
- 7:55Speaker 1: and what all the action this guy had going on?
- 7:57Speaker 3: Absolutely, I mean it was. It was one of the
- 8:00Speaker 3: funniest guys in the world. He can drink a bottle
- 8:02Speaker 3: of Jack Daniels and give us word perfect speech in
- 8:06Speaker 3: front of gymnasiums full of you know, an audience, and
- 8:10Speaker 3: it was just it was a miracle. I couldn't figure
- 8:13Speaker 3: it out.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Yeah, well we can see where you got your training.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Although his tolerance, oh yes, thank.
- 8:18Speaker 3: You, thank you for bringing that up. But the other
- 8:20Speaker 3: thing that which is interesting, which I was and I
- 8:24Speaker 3: wanted to ask you, I agree with Larry Menzies this morning,
- 8:28Speaker 3: which is about you know, we have to watch these polls,
- 8:34Speaker 3: uh they're going on because we want to see where
- 8:38Speaker 3: the Democrats are spending their money.
- 8:40Speaker 1: All right, well, you know, Bill, we got to go
- 8:42Speaker 1: talk to anybody else. But thank you. No, you're a
- 8:45Speaker 1: good caller. We love having him a call. Enjoy happy hour,
- 8:50Speaker 1: Thanks for thanks for checking in with us. Ah when
- 8:53Speaker 1: we come back. Ed Rollins, the Dean himself, the greatest
- 8:56Speaker 1: political analyst of all. What's going to happen in the midterms,
- 8:59Speaker 1: What hap hapens when you fire a cabinet member. We'll
- 9:01Speaker 1: get all of this stuff next on seven to ten
- 9:04Speaker 1: wor
