- 1:11what we're talking about. Okay, so we're gonna go ahead and get started.
- 1:15We're gonna go to our next slide. Does holiday buying guide is?
- 1:19This one is just for teens and children and families, And that's why we're
- 1:26trying to kill that stereotype of if you want to teach a black person something,
- 1:34if you want to know, sorry, let's rephrase that, if you
- 1:37want to keep something from a black person, put in the book. So
- 1:41we're trying to kill that stereotype. But check out these stats, everybody.
- 1:45My next slide is gonna be so alarm maent Okay, So before I got
- 1:51this holiday gude together, I wanted to check out and see what's what's the
- 1:57world of Afrian American kids in literacy? Guys, back in twenty sixteen,
- 2:02do you know that fifty four point nine percent of black high students achieve a
- 2:08proficiency reading score compare the seventy six point one of their white counterparts. What
- 2:17why aren't our kids up there with them? What are we missing? What
- 2:23are we as parents and educated eiders? What are we missing? Now?
- 2:28In twenty seventeen, twenty six point one percent of black student demonstrated proficiency on
- 2:35a fourth grade reading level, while the percentage was forty six point seven for
- 2:42white students. Guys, do you see how low that number is? Now?
- 2:47I'm not telling you that our kids need to be sitting up here reading
- 2:52a scarlet letter and those type books. I'm just saying, give them a
- 2:55book, let them choose what they want to read. You know, the
- 3:00number of African American adults with low literacy skills still remained relatively low since nineteen
- 3:07ninety two. I was, I was in middle school. I graduated in
- 3:14nineteen ninety eight from Garrett Academy of Technology. Go Falcons, But look at
- 3:21that, you guys. Since nineteen ninety two, this is twenty twenty three.
- 3:29Some of the factors are to improve the literacy rates include increasing educational access,
- 3:38improvement and educational quality, government initiations targeting social economic disparacies and racial inequalities.
- 3:47Okay, I'm gonna bring it home. I'm gonna tell you what happened.
- 3:53One day when I was at work at a public library. Okay,
- 3:57I had a mother come in this summer kids, one young man, one
- 4:01young girl, young lady. Let's put him on the same space. They
- 4:05both were in high school and they were supposed to get their require summer reading.
- 4:13They both came in a teen section got their books. The mother came
- 4:19to me and said, make sure she gets her book because I know she
- 4:25is going to read it. Don't worry about him. Because he's not going
- 4:28to read. Excuse me? So when did her education come more important than
- 4:35his education? So since for his grade level and his class, he could
- 4:42choose any book he won, he walked out. There were three books,
- 4:45guys, okay, and guess what. He came back and he said,
- 4:48I read this one. It was the hate you get. He said,
- 4:53I love it. You got anything else like this? So I gave him
- 4:56another book called nick Stole. The girl didn't read her books. So we
- 5:03want to change that. We want to up these numbers. So I challenge
- 5:08all my readers, my adult readers, I challenge you the same way you're
- 5:14reading is to buy your little one book this Christmas and every Christmas. Make
- 5:19a tradition, just one book for me. I always get my daughters and
