Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello everyone, and welcome into another episode of the check Odaily.
- 0:11Speaker 1: It's Andrew Dcheco, Eagles beat reporter for insidethebirds dot Com,
- 0:15Speaker 1: here with you. Today was day six of Eagles' training camp.
- 0:19Speaker 1: The Eagles had three consecutive practices Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Today
- 0:24Speaker 1: was categorized as yellow, so it was a little bit
- 0:27Speaker 1: on the less intense side. I guess is the best
- 0:32Speaker 1: way to classify it. It covered about seventy five minutes.
- 0:37Speaker 1: The players who spoke afterwards rookie Markel Bell, wide receiver
- 0:41Speaker 1: Darius Cooper, quarterback Jaywin Hurts, defensive back Jonathan Jones, tight
- 0:46Speaker 1: end e Laistowers, and linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Junior. Let's get
- 0:51Speaker 1: to the practice report because there were some names on
- 0:55Speaker 1: there that will explain when you see some the personnel
- 1:00Speaker 1: substitutions not practicing. Wide receiver Britain Covey with a hamstring,
- 1:05Speaker 1: Guard Landon Dickerson rest not injury related. Outside linebacker Keyshawn
- 1:11Speaker 1: James Newby ankle, Right tackle Lane Johnson excused, not injury related.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Wide receiver mackay Lemon hamstring, wide receiver DeVante Smith hamstring,
- 1:22Speaker 1: safety Coal was Nesky hamstring limited were guards Michael Morris
- 1:27Speaker 1: shoulder and Jaden Roberts with a calf contusion. Defensive coordinator
- 1:32Speaker 1: Vic Fangio spoke before practice and I took some bullet
- 1:37Speaker 1: points on some things that I found that we're interesting.
- 1:41Speaker 1: He talked about Michael Carter the Second, who is in
- 1:45Speaker 1: a battle with Marcus Epps for that safety spot opposite
- 1:49Speaker 1: Drew mccooba when the Eagles are in Nickel. He said
- 1:51Speaker 1: he's had a good camp and mentioned that he's the
- 1:54Speaker 1: only player who's had to do three different things, so
- 1:56Speaker 1: he's been the sixth dB, so he's in the dime
- 2:00Speaker 1: safety and Nickel. So encouraging words there. On Michael Carter
- 2:05Speaker 1: the Second, there's an update. I mentioned yesterday that he
- 2:07Speaker 1: had an interception in Tuesday's practice with Drew mccouba. While
- 2:12Speaker 1: we're keeping on the subject of the safeties, he mentioned
- 2:15Speaker 1: that the second year safety is in better shape. He
- 2:19Speaker 1: thinks that his process is sped up a little bit.
- 2:22Speaker 1: He's playing faster and with more confidence. That was pretty
- 2:25Speaker 1: notable to the eye. And I've talked about this on
- 2:27Speaker 1: this podcast, I've written about it on Inside the Birds
- 2:30Speaker 1: dot Com. And then you hear Vic Vangio say it.
- 2:33Speaker 1: It aligns with what I see, so that's good. And
- 2:36Speaker 1: Micouba has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders this year,
- 2:40Speaker 1: being the top safety, and so far he's had a
- 2:43Speaker 1: pretty strong start to training camp. He mentioned with Jalen
- 2:46Speaker 1: Carter he's doing the little things better. With Rieke Wollen,
- 2:49Speaker 1: he talked about his good movement and when you have
- 2:52Speaker 1: a six foot four corner sometimes they're not always that fluid.
- 2:55Speaker 1: That's not the case with Rieke Wollen said Arna Bikati's
- 2:59Speaker 1: making some nice progress and an interesting one here. He said,
- 3:04Speaker 1: don't sleep on chance talking about linebacker Chance Campbell, and
- 3:07Speaker 1: then he says, we like Chance. That was the beginning
- 3:10Speaker 1: of his quote. But Chance Campbell is a player that
- 3:13Speaker 1: I've talked about in the offseason. I've talked about him
- 3:17Speaker 1: a little bit in my practice notes through the first
- 3:20Speaker 1: five days. When I write the sixth, the w'll be
- 3:23Speaker 1: on it. But he makes plays, he takes advantage of
- 3:26Speaker 1: his opportunities, and he's very instinctual. He's made a couple
- 3:31Speaker 1: good plays against the run where he sniffs it out.
- 3:33Speaker 1: He had one against Saquon Barkley when the Eagles were
- 3:35Speaker 1: in the practice bubble earlier this week. He had one
- 3:39Speaker 1: in the spring during OTAs or it may have been
- 3:41Speaker 1: mandatory mini camp, so that's a player to keep an
- 3:44Speaker 1: eye on. The Eagles did carry five linebackers last year. Obviously,
- 3:47Speaker 1: Nikobe Dean was one of them, and they drafted Smilemonden junior.
- 3:52Speaker 1: But it's not out of the realm of possibility that
- 3:54Speaker 1: the Eagles could keep five linebackers. It's all going to
- 3:57Speaker 1: be determined on how the numbers shake out. But he
- 4:00Speaker 1: would profile as a pretty strong special teams performer, and
- 4:05Speaker 1: the preseason and practice more than anything is what the
- 4:08Speaker 1: Eagles are going to value over anything. So it seems
- 4:11Speaker 1: to me like he's a pretty consistent practice player, which
- 4:16Speaker 1: is what you want to see from an experienced player
- 4:18Speaker 1: who has that familiarity with linebackers. Coach Bobby King played
- 4:22Speaker 1: in about four games in the NFL, has had some injuries,
- 4:26Speaker 1: but he spent last year on the Eagles practice squad.
- 4:30Speaker 1: There was a lot of mixing and matching units. The
- 4:32Speaker 1: Eagles began with seven on sevens and they were the
- 4:37Speaker 1: first unit was working with the reserves. Of the first
- 4:40Speaker 1: look at safety were Michael Carter and Marcus Apps. They
- 4:45Speaker 1: had Chance Campbell out there. They had Deontay Lawson, a
- 4:49Speaker 1: undrafted rookie linebacker backer out of Alabama, out of out
- 4:53Speaker 1: of Alabama, and their corners were Jonathan Jones and Jacorey
- 4:58Speaker 1: and Bennett, and they were seeing a matching personnel throughout.
- 5:01Speaker 1: But that's what they opened with. Jayalen Hurts hit don
- 5:05Speaker 1: Tavian Wicks on a nice corner route with Andre Samon
- 5:08Speaker 1: tight coverage. I thought Andre might have gotten his hand
- 5:10Speaker 1: in there to break it up, but the timing and
- 5:13Speaker 1: the throw was right on the money. And that was
- 5:16Speaker 1: during the seven on seven period. And so Tanner McKee
- 5:24Speaker 1: had a couple of a couple of nice throws. He
- 5:27Speaker 1: hit Ques Watkins underneath in front of Zach Bonn. He
- 5:31Speaker 1: did rip a throw that was wide of wide receiver
- 5:34Speaker 1: Samori Torre and it went out of balance. Quinya Mitchell
- 5:37Speaker 1: was there providing pretty tight coverage. Jehad Campbell had a
- 5:41Speaker 1: really nice practice today. One of the plays that he
- 5:44Speaker 1: made was a nice pass breakup on Samori Torre. And
- 5:48Speaker 1: keep in mind that you hear that name, and you
- 5:50Speaker 1: may hear some other names that you aren't overly familiar with,
- 5:52Speaker 1: but that has to do with the wide receiver room
- 5:56Speaker 1: being a little depleted right now. There's no Britain Covey,
- 5:59Speaker 1: there was no Anti Smith or McKay lemon. So you're
- 6:02Speaker 1: reaching into your bag of reserves in these moments. And
- 6:06Speaker 1: I should also add that the Eagles did sign wide
- 6:09Speaker 1: receiver Brandon Hayes, who was part of the Eagles rookie
- 6:13Speaker 1: mini camp on a tryout basis Southeastern Louisiana. He was
- 6:16Speaker 1: an accomplished kick returner there and I think he was
- 6:20Speaker 1: participating in mandatory mini camp if I'm remembering this correctly,
- 6:24Speaker 1: But he's back now because the Eagles are light on
- 6:26Speaker 1: numbers and Andy Dalton had a nice.
- 6:35Speaker 2: He tried.
- 6:36Speaker 1: He tried to fit it in there to a tight
- 6:39Speaker 1: end and it was broken up by Joshua Weiru, the
- 6:44Speaker 1: IPP player out of Kenya, and he's someone that is
- 6:49Speaker 1: I thought it was a little interesting. He was working
- 6:52Speaker 1: with Jose Ramirez as the edge rushers. I haven't seen
- 6:55Speaker 1: Joshua we have a ton of reps, but I thought
- 6:58Speaker 1: he had some positive moments on Tuesday, and he had
- 7:02Speaker 1: a nice pass break up there during seven on sevens
- 7:05Speaker 1: when Andy Dalton was trying to fit a pass into
- 7:08Speaker 1: rookie tight end de Kwon right over the middle the
- 7:13Speaker 1: offensive line. And keep in mind again that Landon Dickerson
- 7:17Speaker 1: was sidelined. It was health. It was not for health reasons.
- 7:22Speaker 1: It was a rest day. But at left guard was
- 7:24Speaker 1: Drew Kendall with the first team and at right tackle
- 7:27Speaker 1: with the first team was Markel Bell Jalen Hurts, and
- 7:33Speaker 1: this is during eleven on elevens. He gets the pass
- 7:35Speaker 1: into wide receiver Elijah Moore, who has had a quality
- 7:40Speaker 1: start to his training camp. He seemingly catches everything mostly
- 7:44Speaker 1: underneath type of things, but you can see his route
- 7:46Speaker 1: running and his foot quickness, and you can also tell
- 7:49Speaker 1: that he's a guy who's played the game before. He's
- 7:51Speaker 1: often in the right place and he's been in different systems.
- 7:55Speaker 1: But he caught a short pass there, spun around Jehid
- 7:58Speaker 1: Campbell for a pick up. Chance Campbell got a rep
- 8:03Speaker 1: there a repper too alongside Jehide Campbell. Again, they're mixing
- 8:07Speaker 1: and matching personnel, but I think it speaks more to
- 8:11Speaker 1: how they feel about Chance knowing that you can plug
- 8:13Speaker 1: him in there and he's not going to likely make
- 8:15Speaker 1: a mistake. He has a good grasp on the defense
- 8:19Speaker 1: and to that end, so does Jeremiah Trotter Junior and
- 8:22Speaker 1: Smile Mind. And the Eagles have a very deep and
- 8:26Speaker 1: rich group of off ball linebackers there. Jalen Hurts he
- 8:32Speaker 1: did uncork a deep shot about midway through practice and
- 8:38Speaker 1: it was in the deep left corner of the end
- 8:40Speaker 1: zone into double coverage. Well, the safety was coming over,
- 8:43Speaker 1: but Keeley Ringo and Marcus EPs weren't coverage there. It
- 8:48Speaker 1: was to wide receiver Darius Cooper. I thought the pass
- 8:51Speaker 1: actually was pretty accurate, but it ended up falling in complete.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Marcus EPs was there for the pass breakup, and then
- 8:59Speaker 1: Jay and through a bouncer to tight end Grant Kyle Katara. Overall,
- 9:03Speaker 1: I think, to a larger point, that's what we do here.
- 9:06Speaker 1: And the offense took a step in the right direction
- 9:09Speaker 1: after taking several steps in the wrong direction on Tuesday.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Monday was another encouraging day for that offense. And again,
- 9:17Speaker 1: this is something that it's important to keep in mind
- 9:21Speaker 1: when you're assessing it or when you're looking at the
- 9:26Speaker 1: day to day aspects of training camp and who's playing
- 9:30Speaker 1: well who's not. Just understand and I think you all
- 9:33Speaker 1: know this that this offense is brand new they're installing it.
- 9:38Speaker 1: They're going up against a really stout defense that have
- 9:41Speaker 1: played together for years. And on Tuesday, Jay when Hurts
- 9:45Speaker 1: didn't have a lot of his guys. Today, he didn't
- 9:47Speaker 1: have a lot of his guys. But I thought they
- 9:49Speaker 1: did a nice job early in the session, especially to
- 9:51Speaker 1: get the quarterbacks into a rhythm with short completions, and
- 9:56Speaker 1: there were opportunities to push the ball of the intermediary
- 9:59Speaker 1: and deep level, and the one to Darius Cooper that
- 10:02Speaker 1: wasn't to be was one that really stood out in practice.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Then you have with eleven on eleven's Andy Dalton was
- 10:09Speaker 1: next up with the twos. He hit Johnny Wilson on
- 10:12Speaker 1: a crosser in front of Ambry Thomas. Nice throw by
- 10:15Speaker 1: him to keep the offense. And you know on schedule
- 10:19Speaker 1: the safeties at that point on defense where Maximus Pulley
- 10:22Speaker 1: the rookie and Andre sam The corners were Ambrey Thomas
- 10:26Speaker 1: and Jacoryan Bennett. There was a moment there during this
- 10:32Speaker 1: session where it was a very very minor dust up
- 10:37Speaker 1: that was separated quickly, but center William Lampkin and linebacker
- 10:41Speaker 1: Smile Manden Junior, it looked like Smile Manden had his
- 10:44Speaker 1: helmet ripped off. But that's kind of what you're going
- 10:48Speaker 1: to see when you start to get into the dog
- 10:50Speaker 1: days this summer. The Eagles were not in pads today,
- 10:52Speaker 1: but it was steamy out And when you're constantly battling
- 10:56Speaker 1: back and forth, and you know, day after day day
- 11:00Speaker 1: bleeds into the next, these things tend to happen even
- 11:03Speaker 1: in a controlled environment, even though you're not having two
- 11:05Speaker 1: A days like in Lehigh or the pads. Sometimes you'll
- 11:10Speaker 1: see certain moments get the best of you. And that
- 11:14Speaker 1: was quickly separated.
- 11:15Speaker 2: But hey, Philly fans game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 11:22Speaker 2: long lines, We've all been there. But when it comes
- 11:24Speaker 2: to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is
- 11:29Speaker 2: the dispensary for sports fans, just minutes outside of Philly,
- 11:33Speaker 2: with plenty of free parking. You'll be in and out fast,
- 11:36Speaker 2: no hassle, no waiting, and they don't just care about convenience.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Camden Apothecary is all about the guest experience. Their staff
- 11:45Speaker 2: makes sure you feel taken care of every time you
- 11:48Speaker 2: walk in. Plus they carry only the best quality cannabis
- 11:52Speaker 2: at the fairest prices, so whether you're stocking up for
- 11:55Speaker 2: the tailgate, the watch party, or celebrating a big win,
- 11:59Speaker 2: you know you're getting the good stuff without overpaying. They
- 12:02Speaker 2: even show love to the community with specials for fans, students,
- 12:07Speaker 2: service members, and healthcare pros. Canned in apothecary, top quality cannabis,
- 12:12Speaker 2: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans. Twenty
- 12:16Speaker 2: one and up.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Andy Dalton had to dump off to Cameron Lattu on
- 12:20Speaker 1: the left side, Cameron Latsu getting a reception a rare
- 12:24Speaker 1: catcht He hasn't necessarily factored on that much as a
- 12:28Speaker 1: receiver to this point. The best play of the day,
- 12:31Speaker 1: or the most notable, I would say, at least in
- 12:33Speaker 1: my estimation, was Andy Dalton when he connected on a
- 12:36Speaker 1: quick out to Ques Watkins on the left. Ques Watkins
- 12:40Speaker 1: ends up tight roping it up the left sideline and scores.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Ques Watkins is someone that, yes, he has an immensely
- 12:48Speaker 1: uphill battle to make the roster. He's on the outside
- 12:50Speaker 1: looking in, and it doesn't seem as though he would
- 12:53Speaker 1: have a realistic opportunity. But I think with the moments
- 12:56Speaker 1: that he's had, with the opportunities that he's been given,
- 12:59Speaker 1: he has answered the call by and large. There was
- 13:02Speaker 1: a moment on Tuesday where it didn't look like he
- 13:06Speaker 1: tracked the football particularly well, but there are other moments,
- 13:09Speaker 1: whether it's jumping up there and staring a deep shot
- 13:12Speaker 1: from I think maybe Cole Payton earlier in training camp
- 13:16Speaker 1: or something to that effect. He's had a couple of moments.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Doesn't see the ball a ton, It doesn't come his
- 13:22Speaker 1: way often. But I think that he's a player that,
- 13:25Speaker 1: for whatever reason, every time I mentioned his name, and
- 13:28Speaker 1: I don't think it's fair to quez whether I'm mentioning
- 13:30Speaker 1: it on Twitter, nice catch or whatever the case is,
- 13:33Speaker 1: he was the intended receiver. There's always a lot of
- 13:36Speaker 1: really just kind of nasty comments, and that's I don't
- 13:41Speaker 1: know that that's called for. In fact, it's not called for.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I'm trying to outline what happened, and it seems like
- 13:48Speaker 1: there's a lot who are holding on to the twenty
- 13:51Speaker 1: twenty two season or whatever it is. But he's very
- 13:54Speaker 1: far down in the pecking order here, and I think
- 13:58Speaker 1: that circumstances are different this time, of course, But you know,
- 14:02Speaker 1: he's trying. He's out there just like everyone else trying
- 14:05Speaker 1: to trying to grind out the dog days of summer
- 14:08Speaker 1: and make the most of his opportunities, So I just
- 14:10Speaker 1: kind of wanted to add that in there. There was
- 14:13Speaker 1: another one where Andy Dalton tried a deep shot in
- 14:17Speaker 1: the right end zone to look like Danny Gray. Michael
- 14:21Speaker 1: Carter the Second had really good coverage there. Again. Mark
- 14:24Speaker 1: Michael Carter the Second's number name has been mentioned again
- 14:28Speaker 1: and I have mentioned in a number of times through
- 14:30Speaker 1: training camp, but especially over the past couple of days.
- 14:33Speaker 1: He's coming on a little bit and I'm fascinated to
- 14:36Speaker 1: see where he's able to go from here. Can he
- 14:39Speaker 1: continue to build off of these days, because it does
- 14:42Speaker 1: seem like Vic Fangios pleased with what he's seeing. Marcus
- 14:45Speaker 1: Epps as well, has had a solid training camp. Neither
- 14:47Speaker 1: player really An interception from Carter the day before was
- 14:53Speaker 1: really the only notable play that I can recall from
- 14:56Speaker 1: either of those two players having. But sometimes that's a
- 14:59Speaker 1: good because it means that they're not necessarily out of place.
- 15:02Speaker 1: They're playing within structure and things like that, and the
- 15:06Speaker 1: action will sometimes find you, and in the case of
- 15:09Speaker 1: Michael Carter the Second the day before it found him.
- 15:12Speaker 1: I mentioned Marcus EPs having a nice pass break up
- 15:14Speaker 1: there on that deep shot to Darius Cooper as well.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Tanner McKee had a strike to Stone Smart over the middle,
- 15:21Speaker 1: the tight end dropped it. You gotta have those, especially
- 15:25Speaker 1: when you don't see a ton of targets that. Nevertheless,
- 15:28Speaker 1: that that wasn't to be. Jaywen hurts in the and
- 15:32Speaker 1: the starters get on the field, Jaywen tries a wheel
- 15:35Speaker 1: route to Tank Bigsby. Tank was able to shake free
- 15:39Speaker 1: or seemingly so, and he was flag. Linebacker jo Hide
- 15:43Speaker 1: Campbell was in coverage and he was flagged on that
- 15:45Speaker 1: play for that. Andy Dalton had a nice tight window
- 15:49Speaker 1: throw to Darius Cooper with Turik Castro Fields in coverage.
- 15:53Speaker 1: More on Turi Castro Fields in a moment. He's a
- 15:56Speaker 1: player that I haven't really mentioned at all in the
- 15:58Speaker 1: offseason or right now except when I'm outlining the respective
- 16:02Speaker 1: cornerback room. But he had a nice day. But Tanner
- 16:06Speaker 1: McKee hits a swing pass to Elijah Mitchell who takes
- 16:09Speaker 1: it down the right side for a nice little chunk
- 16:11Speaker 1: chunk game there. Tanner seemed to do a better job
- 16:14Speaker 1: today getting the ball out of his hands quicker and
- 16:17Speaker 1: making those split decisions so that's that's what you want
- 16:20Speaker 1: to see, especially in this new offense. You want to
- 16:22Speaker 1: see progress. You want to see certain players taking steps
- 16:25Speaker 1: forward in the right direction. That doesn't mean that it's
- 16:27Speaker 1: going to be continuous progress each and every day, but
- 16:30Speaker 1: you want to be able to see certain players take
- 16:33Speaker 1: take that leap. Cole Payton was picked off by tar
- 16:38Speaker 1: Caastro Fields, who was throwing this Samori torre. It went
- 16:41Speaker 1: off his hands. The pass was a little bit high,
- 16:43Speaker 1: but credit Castro Fields for being there for the interception.
- 16:47Speaker 1: And then Cole Peyton hits Eric azukanma on a crosser
- 16:52Speaker 1: with J. T. Gray in coverage, and then to end practice,
- 16:56Speaker 1: Torea castro Fields gets a pass breakup to end the session.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Cole Payton, by the way, is a fun player to
- 17:03Speaker 1: watch because he has an old school gunslinger mentality where
- 17:08Speaker 1: he'll just throw it up there. He is fearless, and
- 17:12Speaker 1: sometimes that can work against you. But I see a
- 17:14Speaker 1: little Brett farvinhm with how he's willing to take chances.
- 17:17Speaker 1: I'm not necessarily I'm not equating it to Jamis Winston.
- 17:20Speaker 1: We're not anywhere near that point, but you can see
- 17:23Speaker 1: that he has a willingness to really push the ball.
- 17:26Speaker 1: He throws with a lot of confidence. Sometimes that's been
- 17:29Speaker 1: to his detriment, but it's all part of the growth
- 17:31Speaker 1: process for a developmental quarterback and real quick on Castro Fields,
- 17:36Speaker 1: he's very far down in the depth chart. He doesn't
- 17:39Speaker 1: get a ton of opportunities, which is not unique to
- 17:43Speaker 1: any of those back end of the roster players. But
- 17:45Speaker 1: the Eagles have found ways to get him in the mix,
- 17:48Speaker 1: along with Ambry Thomas on defense, working with the second
- 17:51Speaker 1: and third groups. And sometimes that sounds simple enough, but
- 17:55Speaker 1: that's not always the case for some young players. Sometimes
- 17:58Speaker 1: they don't rep at all. But Castro Fields is a
- 18:01Speaker 1: very physical player former Penn State Nitney Lyon, and sometimes
- 18:05Speaker 1: he can get a little handsy, a little grabby, But
- 18:07Speaker 1: there's a reason why the Eagles have kept him around
- 18:09Speaker 1: for two or three years now. He is probably a
- 18:14Speaker 1: good practice player. He has good length at six foot one,
- 18:17Speaker 1: one hundred ninety seven pounds, and he plays the ball well.
- 18:21Speaker 1: And that was certainly the case on this particular day.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Those are my spark notes that I'm just kind of
- 18:30Speaker 1: perusing my notebook right now to get you guys that
- 18:32Speaker 1: information as quickly as I can. It was a steamy
- 18:35Speaker 1: one there at the Jefferson Health Training Complex and the
- 18:38Speaker 1: Eagles have We won't be there tomorrow for practice. That's
- 18:43Speaker 1: Thursday that I'm talking about, but practice resumes as normal
- 18:46Speaker 1: on Friday, and there will be another one on Saturday,
- 18:50Speaker 1: and I will have all that coverage for you on
- 18:52Speaker 1: Inside the Birds dot Com and of course right here
- 18:55Speaker 1: on to check Odaily. That's going to do it for
- 18:57Speaker 1: this episode of the check Odaily and to check O
- 19:01Speaker 1: and I'll catch you all on the next one.
- 19:13Speaker 3: If I could create a cash app card to best
- 19:16Speaker 3: represent my family, it would be a cup of coffee,
