- 0:00Guys then look back to another podcast live episode.
- 0:02Again, these are recorded live, but they're not going out live.
- 0:05So please don't come and expect me to be here right now.
- 0:07But if you do have anything to say, copy the comment down
- 0:09below. I will always respond.
- 0:11OK, so I am back with another episode and this creator, my
- 0:14guest today, Taylor Heaton. She is better known as mum on
- 0:19the spectrum. If you come across YouTube that
- 0:21you know and seen her on there and I definitely have and This
- 0:25is why I'm excited to introduce Taylor to you guys today.
- 0:27So, Taylor, what's going on? Hey, I'm excited to be here.
- 0:30I'm having a little bit of a fangirl moment, honestly.
- 0:32Like feel like I'm coming full circle because I used to listen
- 0:36to you before I got my diagnosis so.
- 0:39Yeah, away. You know, I didn't actually.
- 0:43I didn't send you my book. Did I send you my book?
- 0:45Did you get? My no, you, you messaged me and
- 0:47I was out of town and I don't have my business address
- 0:49memorized. So I was like, I'll get back to
- 0:51you. And so I missed when you were
- 0:52sending it out, but I want to copy.
- 0:54And congratulations on your book.
- 0:55That's huge. As soon as you finish this,
- 0:58e-mail me or message me on Instagram some of your address.
- 1:00I will send you a book straight out.
- 1:01Like I literally I have like tons going out to people with my
- 1:03friends and stuff. So yeah, let me know.
- 1:05Give that dress. You'll go.
- 1:07OK, Go here behind me. Boo, Boo, Boo.
- 1:10Yeah, I see it. It's actually currently sold out
- 1:12in the in the European Union. Like you can't get it right now.
- 1:15So the win. Congrats.
- 1:16That's that's really exciting. Thanks to you, man.
- 1:18It's it's crazy, but yes fun going Oh my goodness yeah bad
- 1:22girl goodness me. I know.
- 1:23Do you know what? It's funny, like I feel like I'm
- 1:25the autism YouTube autism influencer dinosaur.
- 1:29Like I've been on this platform in 1010 or 11 years, right?
- 1:32So it's kind of like. Yeah.
- 1:34Yeah. Yeah, you've figured it out.
- 1:37Yeah, do you know what? It's funny because like I when I
- 1:39first started, there was nobody doing it.
- 1:40So I was like, I was like, God, nobody's did it.
- 1:42So I thought I'd just test the wars and put some information
- 1:44out because I felt like it needed to happen.
- 1:45So that's, that's actually how I started.
- 1:46But yes, here I am, you know, like 250 Subs later, you know?
- 1:50Yeah, Well, I'm so glad. I'm so glad you did, because
- 1:53that's part of why I'm here. So I appreciate the work that
- 1:56you're doing. Oh, it's amazing.
- 1:58Thank you so much. And a blessed circle to come
- 2:00around because I've seen your stuff and I love it too.
- 2:02So tell us a bit about you. So the audience who's listening
- 2:05and watching, you know, who is Taylor Heaton?
- 2:06What's the mom on the spectrum? Tell us a little bit about that.
- 2:09Yeah, so I'm 34 now, but I I received my autism diagnosis
- 2:13when I was 31. And one of my friends was
- 2:16diagnosed and she told me the kind of the domino for her that
- 2:20led to everything was this term called copy and paste behaviors.
- 2:25And I just instinctively understood what that meant.
- 2:27I was like, you know, copying and pasting social behaviors.
- 2:31Doesn't everybody do that? You know?
- 2:33And this friend in particular, I was like, if she's autistic,
- 2:37then maybe I don't really understand what autism is
- 2:40because she was really socially skilled and like, we were music
- 2:43majors together and like we just had a lot of similarities.
- 2:46So that led into my like black hole research for autism where I
- 2:50was just like, I'm going to read the entire Internet.
- 2:53And that's when I came across your podcast a few years ago.
- 2:56And so I started learning more about it at the same time that I
- 3:00was researching for my son, I was reading a book called The
- 3:03Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine Aaron.
- 3:05So at the same time was kind of being funneled into autism
- 3:08through the lens of highly sensitive person and getting
- 3:10that vocabulary. And so it all kind of came
- 3:13together during the pandemic. That's when I received my
- 3:18official diagnosis. And it, it just really felt like
- 3:22coming home in a way that I felt like I could finally quit
- 3:25running on the hamster wheel of like trying to understand my
- 3:28brain and trying to feel like I could make sense of my life.
- 3:32And I, I just knew I'm like, I have to start talking about how
- 3:36this has changed my life. And so I just got my camera out
- 3:39and just started shooting and I uploaded it to YouTube.
- 3:42And that's how Mom on the Spectrum was born.
- 3:45Amazing. And so how so you did you start
- 3:48going online like did you start like posting videos since 2020
- 3:52or how long have you been online for now?
- 3:542021 so like 2 years now. Cool.
- 3:57And how are you finding it? How are you finding the the
- 4:00space, the community? Like how do you find it putting
- 4:02content out rather than digesting the content?
- 4:04You know, I, I actually love it and people ask me, I don't know
- 4:08if you found this to be true, but I actually find that a large
- 4:12majority of the feedback is positive and uplifting.
- 4:16I, you know, obviously there's going to be haters and trolls,
- 4:18but like, for the most part, I've found the autistic
- 4:22community to again, just be like coming home.
- 4:25I love it. They're my people.
- 4:26I feel like I have finally found where I belong, so I'm I'm all
- 4:31about it. Yeah, that's awesome if you
- 4:33found any negativity within the community because there's a lot
- 4:35of controversial topics and I cover all of them because I
- 4:38don't care. But I see I feel like no in in
- 4:41the in the terms of like I, I'm, I'm quite thick skinned.
- 4:43So I'll talk about Asperger syndrome.
- 4:45I'll talk about people who say high functioning, low
- 4:47functioning, because those things, I have AI have an
- 4:49interesting view on those things and I have a very logical
- 4:52scientific view on those things. But I feel like there's a lot of
- 4:55people who kind of like, you know, you, you get bashed about
- 4:58if you say like, I have autism or a person with autism, you
- 5:00know, they, we'll say like autistic person first, you know,
- 5:02And it's kind of like annoys me a little bit because I feel like
- 5:05you can't impose how somebody wants to identify, you know what
- 5:07I mean? So it's like forcing pronouns
- 5:10and so on. You can't really force a pronoun
- 5:11and so on. Someone says like, hey, I
- 5:12identify as they them. You say, OK, well, cool.
- 5:14I'll address you as they them. You don't say no, no, no, you're
- 5:16a female to me. You know, you can't say that.
- 5:18So you can't just say you have to put autistic person first
- 5:21because it's not how someone wants to.
- 5:22But because of that, because of my views on those, because I
- 5:24want people to be accepted into a community.
- 5:27And you know, Asperger's syndrome was a was a clinical
- 5:30diagnosis right up until 2013. So you have thousands and
- 5:34hundreds of thousands of people diagnosed with that.
- 5:36So it's kind of like I'm accepting of those people.
- 5:39Have you found any backlash like that in the community that's
- 5:41negative? Yeah, there's, you know, it
- 5:44depends on where you're looking, but yeah, it's definitely there.
- 5:47And, and lately I've gotten some backlash, you know, people
- 5:51saying, thinking that I'm kind of drowning out the voices of
- 5:55people with higher support needs because they can't communicate
- 5:58as well. And so that, you know, it's
- 6:01interesting to me because it's like, I feel like the, the
- 6:04higher functioning I'm using, you know, airport higher
- 6:06functioning autistic people, like we have so many unseen
- 6:10challenges. And I tell people like you're
- 6:13seeing like you're seeing like an edited version of myself
- 6:16online and you don't see so much like obviously I want people
- 6:20that have higher support needs to be represented, obviously.
- 6:23But I'm one person, you know, I'm one person.
- 6:25I'm sharing my story and I don't want to share the story of other
- 6:27people that I haven't lived that experience.
- 6:30So that's the thing recently that's come up the most as
- 6:33people. I've had a couple people say I'm
- 6:35like drowning out other people's voices, which I'm like, I'm just
- 6:38using my voice and you know, I'm not going to be able to to speak
- 6:41for everybody. I don't want to speak for
- 6:43everybody. You know what, like you know, I
- 6:46people like that like to me, I always go back to the devil
- 6:48makes work for idle hands, right?
- 6:50So those people are very bored and they're very they have stuff
- 6:53going on in their lives. So I always have to reach out
- 6:55with compassion. So it gives me like, you know,
- 6:56internally if we have a intro hate, I always say like, look, I
- 7:00know what's going on in your life, but I, I hope it's OK.
- 7:02And I'm always here to help because I am, you know, if
- 7:04somebody gets me like you're an asshole or, hey, I said like,
- 7:06you can't use Asperger's. I'm like, OK, whatever.
- 7:08But then they were like, oh, I'm stuck.
- 7:09I need to help. I'll be like, yeah, dude, like
- 7:11100%. Like, forget all the other
- 7:12stuff, you know, it doesn't matter.
- 7:13Are you using the ANO fidget gadget?
- 7:15Is that what you're using? We have so many similarities
- 7:17over here dude. That's crazy.
- 7:19I have, yeah. By the way, guys, we have the
- 7:22same computer. We're using the same kind of
- 7:24like Apple keyboard and mouse with a IMAX that matches this
- 7:28mint green colour, which is lovely.
- 7:30Yeah, it's funny. And are you using a Blue Yeti
- 7:33microphone? Yeah.
- 7:35Yeah, I used to have a blue Yeti.
- 7:36Well, I do have a blue Yeti microphone.
- 7:37I've upgraded to this sure podcasting rate, which is great
- 7:41because a little fancy schmancy now.
- 7:43Yeah, Yeah. You know, it's interesting,
- 7:45like, you know, if we, if autistic individuals like
- 7:47yourself and myself, who are able to verbally articulate our
- 7:52needs and, and, and issues, then if we didn't have those people,
- 7:56then you wouldn't have anybody looking into the people with
- 7:58like higher support needs, right?
- 8:00You definitely need a bigger voice.
- 8:02And I think, like, for me, it's always like, look, if we're not
- 8:05doing it, nobody's going to do it.
- 8:06You know what I mean? And, and who better to do it
- 8:07than people within the community themselves?
- 8:10But it's sad. It's sad that people find the
- 8:12find issues with people just trying to help.
- 8:13Like nothing that we do is sinister.
- 8:15Like anything, anything I do, my entire business, my ethos, my,
- 8:18my, my team ethos is we want to help as many people as possible
- 8:22as quickly as possible. That's it.
- 8:24There's nothing else in my business like ethos like that.
- 8:27That's it. And so, you know, when you come
- 8:29to a place like that and everybody who works for me, they
- 8:31come in and we say like, that's it.
- 8:33We're we're, I'm coming from a place of help.
- 8:34So for people to just kind of get snotty about it, really,
- 8:36they really don't understand how maybe it's bad messaging for my
- 8:38behalf. They really don't have the
- 8:39ideas, but you know. No, I mean, and I think you, I
- 8:42like your approach in that like everybody's going through
- 8:45something and that's the lens that they're coming to you from,
- 8:48you know, so it's like people who ask those types of questions
- 8:50or something else behind it, it's hardly ever about you, you
- 8:54know, it's more so it's an issue that they're trying to work
- 8:56through. And so I think that's one
- 8:58interesting thing, especially, you know, we could talk about
- 9:00rejection sensitive dysphoria, but like that's one challenge
- 9:03being being an online content creator is that there's just
- 9:06that there's never, even though most of the support and feedback
- 9:09has been positive, like, you know, the negative ones come and
- 9:13it's hard, it can be tricky to deal with.
- 9:14So you have to kind of develop a mindset around it.
- 9:17Yeah, yeah, 100%, dude. And you kind of just get a
- 9:19developer and you do develop a thick skin because you're just
- 9:21like, oh, do you know what? Like it's marginal.
- 9:23And these people are just obviously like people who had
- 9:25hugged as much as children or whatever, you know?
- 9:27So it's like you just need to kind of give them that actual
- 9:29love that they didn't get, right.
- 9:31So how, how have my, how have you found like navigating doing
- 9:36something that's quite online intensive, like creating videos
- 9:39as in text, right. So I put out 100 pieces of
- 9:41content a day through the ESP world and we're on every
- 9:44associated platform going for 100 pieces of content a day.
- 9:46We're running 5 or 6 different websites.
- 9:50I can, you know, we do a lot of things, OK, I have a team, it's
- 9:53only a small team. Like we have two editing teams,
- 9:56have an assistant, I have a graphics person and a website
- 9:59guy. So you know, and a customer is a
- 10:01populism. So there's a very small team of
- 10:03people, but like in terms of getting that much content and I
- 10:06am the sole content creator, right?
- 10:08So I have to grow content and it does kicks my ass.
- 10:11But luckily I have ADHD and so I'm able to just like get on it,
- 10:15right. How do you find, you know,
- 10:17navigating life as a mum, as a wife, as a, as a, as a human in
- 10:21you know what I mean? Like how do you find that?
- 10:23Well, it's really difficult. I mean, this past year, I don't
- 10:25know if you saw this is I'm doing well, but I went through a
- 10:28divorce this past year. And so, so sorry.
- 10:31This was Yeah, it's OK to mean to.
- 10:33Say the wife thing then I'm so sorry.
- 10:34No, no, there's no, no, I'm happy to talk about it and
- 10:38honestly, I'm so much better on this side of it.
- 10:40But like, it's been a blessing and a curse with my business
- 10:43because, you know, I, I can take off whatever I want, you know,
- 10:47but it's, it's hard because when you're going through a tough
- 10:51time, there's nobody there to hold your hand and say, like,
- 10:53you need to do this. Because I'm, it's just me right
- 10:55now, Like I'm just a soul team of myself.
- 10:59So it's, it, there's been a lot of flexibility to where I can
- 11:02take time off and, and just like take care of myself.
- 11:06But it definitely, I've had so much burnout this year and, and
- 11:10that's been hard to manage because, you know, trying to
- 11:13create new content when you're burnout is it's like just
- 11:16scraping from the bottom of the barrel.
- 11:18It's really, really difficult. So yeah, I, I really love the
- 11:21flexibility of it, but when I'm in periods of burnout, it's
- 11:25really difficult to like, find a path forward.
- 11:29Interesting. And I, I definitely feel that.
- 11:31I mean, what I, what I do to do that is I batch film content.
- 11:34So I'll spend a couple of weeks filming, you know, hundreds of
- 11:37pieces of content and then put it onto the drive.
- 11:38And then like, obviously we're having team edited.
- 11:40But you know, but the thing about it is like you have a
- 11:42backup log of videos that just go up, you know, whenever you
- 11:46want to see. So if you are in a burnout
- 11:47stage, you're like, it's OK, because I've been in burnout now
- 11:49for like 4 weeks. I just had a baby 10 weeks ago.
- 11:52So it was OK, thank you. And then it just hit like kind
- 11:55of like about 3 or 4 weeks ago I was like, like, I can't do this,
- 11:58you know, I can't wait. So I've been busy behind the
- 12:00scenes, like building different products and stuff like that to
- 12:02keep myself actively helping the community.
- 12:04But also most of the videos are going out now are videos that I
- 12:07filmed like a year ago or so, which is, which is good.
- 12:09And it's, it's helpful. So maybe maybe that's something
- 12:12to, to kind of look at maybe batch production, you know,
- 12:15yeah, what, what's the future of, of, of the spectrum that you
- 12:18know, more on the spectrum and, and Taylor Heaton, like what,
- 12:20what's your, what's your vision for the future?
- 12:22What's your goals? What are you going to do?
- 12:23What's the juicy stuff? OK So what I love like what's
- 12:27transformed my life the most is connecting to a community who
- 12:30gets it. Like whenever I interact with
- 12:32the autistic community, I'm always learning more vocabulary
- 12:36to explain my experiences. I feel more validated.
- 12:38I feel more like more of an authentic representation of
- 12:42myself. I'm learning how to unmask.
- 12:44And so my goal is just creating more and more community
- 12:47opportunity use for the for the autistic adults of the world.
- 12:51And my like, my big long term goal is, and I need all of like
- 12:56the feedback from the community. Like I want to create like
- 12:59regional conferences where we can all get together in a
- 13:01sensory friendly way with like all kinds of fun, you know, like
- 13:05fidgets and like let's wear pajamas and let's, you know,
- 13:08different people present on their special interests.
- 13:10And I just just like an autistic free for all, but like in a fun
- 13:14sensory friendly way. So my long term goal is to have
- 13:17like little regional conferences where we can get together in a
- 13:20safe community format that works for people of all different
- 13:24needs. So I would I that's where I'm
- 13:26headed and I'm really excited about it.
- 13:28Dude, that's like that's super. Would you ever be interested in
- 13:30collaborating on something like that?
- 13:31Because I, I have a business I started called Austin Social
- 13:35Summit. So we're putting on our first
- 13:37ever event in Canada in 2024 in April, but we're branching out
- 13:41to United States and Australia. And so we have sponsors like
- 13:45Facebook and YouTube. So it would be interesting if
- 13:48you're interested, we could talk about, you know, collaborating
- 13:50on those things and we could make your realities come to
- 13:52light. Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:54I mean, I don't really care. Like it doesn't have to be under
- 13:57my name. Like I just want, it's so
- 13:59healing for myself and just others in the community.
- 14:01Like that's been the most transformative part of my
- 14:04journey of seeing autistic people connect with each other.
- 14:07And I know that there's so many hindrances for us who have
- 14:11social differences. And I'm, I'm here, I'm like, I
- 14:13want to help people figure out how to connect.
- 14:16And so like, whatever format that happens in it, I'm happy to
- 14:19offer my services. Would love to collaborate.
- 14:21Oh, 100%. Let's let Well, yeah, we'll get
- 14:23down with that. Right, 100% OK, that's perfect.
- 14:27So here's so my closing question to you is what would you like
- 14:31anybody to know who was in your position back in 2020 or before
- 14:342020 before you got diagnosed? What would what would you advice
- 14:36me to anybody who was in a position like you, especially
- 14:39women, if that's OK? Yeah, OK, So especially for
- 14:42women, I my advice lately that I'm giving is trust your
- 14:46intuition. You are not too sensitive, trust
- 14:49your experiences. One thing that I've found, I
- 14:52don't know if you found this as well, but autistic people tend
- 14:55to be in close proximity to some pretty controlling personality
- 15:00types sometimes. And so I think that it's, yeah,
- 15:04I think it's really important, especially for women to trust
- 15:07your voice. Start speaking up.
- 15:09It can be really scary. I know a lot of us are people
- 15:11pleasers and we tend to kind of like try to take care of other
- 15:14people's feelings first. But really lean into your
- 15:18experience. Don't talk yourself out of what
- 15:20you're thinking, you're feeling. Ask all the questions.
- 15:23Trust you into intuition and like part of trusting your
- 15:27intuition when you've, when you've gotten away from doing
- 15:31that for so long, especially if you're late diagnosed and you're
- 15:33not aware of your tendencies, it can take a while to like relearn
- 15:37how to trust your intuition and how to use flex that muscle.
- 15:41So just baby steps like I, I tell people try, you know,
- 15:46choosing a different cereal at the grocery store, like just
- 15:48little things that feel good, taking small steps towards like
- 15:52identifying your wants and your needs.
- 15:53And that will help you slowly start unmasking, starting to
- 15:57feel like a more authentic representation of yourself, more
- 16:00comfortable in your skin. But definitely, at the end of
- 16:02the day, trust your experience, trust your intuition, and lean
- 16:06into that as much as you can. I love that.
- 16:08It's beautiful. So Taylor, how can people find
- 16:10you on the web? Where?
- 16:12Where do they go? So my website is Mom on the
- 16:15Spectrum dot Life, and I'm mostly on YouTube.
- 16:17You can go to youtube.com/mom on the Spectrum, but you can find
- 16:20all my resources. Mom on the Spectrum dot life, my
- 16:22community events. I have downloadable resources.
- 16:25One thing I'm really proud of is the big autistic Resource guide.
- 16:29So that's about like 50 pages. Now, it's free to be featured in
- 16:32if you have an autistic business product, service, social media
- 16:35account. And I try to put that out
- 16:37quarterly so you can find all different types.
- 16:40Like my idea is that there's so many autistic people out there
- 16:43that if we could have a hub of like all of our products and
- 16:46services, we could keep each other in business.
- 16:49Yeah. Am I on that list?
