- 0:00Speaker 1: Texan Tuesday. Yeah, on a Tuesday. The worst commute day
- 0:08Speaker 1: of the week.
- 0:08Speaker 2: You know what?
- 0:09Speaker 1: I'm almost starting to get swayed to another day of
- 0:11Speaker 1: the week. But Texan, but Tuesday is no bargain. More
- 0:17Speaker 1: on that in a moment.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Good afternoon, everybody.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM 1300
- 0:22Speaker 1: The Zone. The name of the program is The Craig
- 0:24Speaker 1: Way Show. I'm glad to be your host, Craig Way,
- 0:27Speaker 1: alongside the producer. Jay Kerman, I've been saying for some
- 0:32Speaker 1: time that Tuesday's the worst work, drive, commuting day of
- 0:38Speaker 1: the week. That is because, and this started with the pandemic, many,
- 0:43Speaker 1: many folks started working from home, some five days a week.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Then a slow return back to the offices. Still, however,
- 0:50Speaker 1: keeping some folks who became enamored with not having to
- 0:54Speaker 1: go into the office on either Monday or Friday or both.
- 0:58Speaker 1: deciding they continue to work from home on Monday and Friday.
- 1:00Speaker 1: So it kind of lessened the traffic crunch and crush
- 1:05Speaker 1: on those two commuting days. At least I've noticed it
- 1:09Speaker 1: driving in or driving home in afternoon drive and sometimes
- 1:12Speaker 1: driving in in the mornings as well. So for a while,
- 1:17Speaker 1: for the last few years, I've said the worst commute
- 1:19Speaker 1: day of the week was Tuesday because folks are going in,
- 1:22Speaker 1: they got to go into the office on Tuesday. And
- 1:23Speaker 1: I do notice it when I get here the iHeart compound.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I don't know if you notice it, Jake, when you
- 1:28Speaker 1: come in. There are many, many more cars in the
- 1:30Speaker 1: parking garage on Tuesday than there are on Monday or Friday.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that's right.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Friday, we can, you know, leave the door open in here,
- 1:38Speaker 4: maybe put our feet up, spread out a little bit.
- 1:41Speaker 3: But Tuesday, yeah, you got to keep it between the lines.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Yeah, there's that.
- 1:46Speaker 1: And some of that has to do with even pre-pandemic.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Tuesday's a big meeting day in the office. Sales meetings,
- 1:55Speaker 1: programming meetings, all those kinds of meetings. Tuesday is just
- 1:58Speaker 1: a big meeting day that you have in the office.
- 2:01Speaker 1: So if it's like that all over the area, then
- 2:04Speaker 1: obviously the commute would be worse than going in.
- 2:07Speaker 2: And it is.
- 2:08Speaker 1: However, I'm ready to submit to you that the new
- 2:12Speaker 1: worst commute day of the week is not Tuesday.
- 2:16Speaker 3: It's Thursday. Okay.
- 2:18Speaker 1: And maybe it's because folks are that last day of
- 2:22Speaker 1: the week for them because they're not going into the
- 2:24Speaker 1: office on Friday or they're trying to get away on
- 2:26Speaker 1: a weekend, that kind of thing. So it takes me
- 2:30Speaker 1: well over an hour to get home on Thursdays. And
- 2:33Speaker 1: it's right at about an hour right now on Tuesdays.
- 2:35Speaker 1: So maybe Thursday.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 2:36Speaker 1: And now that school has started again, maybe that has
- 2:40Speaker 1: a factor in it.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know. Put it this way.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Not an easy commute for a lot of you. And hopefully..
- 2:47Speaker 1: If you're out there stuck in it, we can make
- 2:49Speaker 1: it a little bit easier for you throughout the course
- 2:51Speaker 1: of the day.
- 2:51Speaker 2: All right, here's what we have coming up in a
- 2:54Speaker 2: few minutes.
- 2:55Speaker 1: We're going to visit, uh, or we're going to hear
- 2:58Speaker 1: from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian, more from Sark coming
- 3:01Speaker 1: out of the weekend practices and going through this week
- 3:04Speaker 1: and getting ready for this final full week of training camp,
- 3:08Speaker 1: fall camp practices, because next week is a game week.
- 3:11Speaker 1: You get into the game week stuff. So we're going
- 3:12Speaker 1: to hear from Sark coming up on that in a
- 3:15Speaker 1: few minutes. Um, We also have a soundbite we played
- 3:18Speaker 1: yesterday from Sark. I'm going to play it for you
- 3:20Speaker 1: again here in a moment because it goes into this
- 3:24Speaker 1: other item that we lead off the show with today,
- 3:26Speaker 1: and that's this business surrounding Daquan Wright, the tight end
- 3:32Speaker 1: who played at Ole Miss for the past couple of years,
- 3:35Speaker 1: figured his eligibility was up, tried to make the Cleveland
- 3:39Speaker 1: Browns his undrafted free agent. was actually in uniform for
- 3:44Speaker 1: the Browns-Bills preseason game last Saturday and did not get
- 3:49Speaker 1: into the game. Important distinction for those especially seeing it
- 3:53Speaker 1: from his side of the coin.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Don't want to burn your red shirt. Oh, wait, those
- 3:57Speaker 3: are gone too.
- 3:57Speaker 5: Yeah, right.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Exactly. And was released by the Browns. He was cut.
- 4:04Speaker 4: So..
- 4:05Speaker 1: With the new five-for-five rule in place and many student
- 4:10Speaker 1: athletes going back and litigating against the NCAA, looking for
- 4:16Speaker 1: court injunctions. There was a big one out of Louisiana,
- 4:19Speaker 1: and then another judge kind of slapped that down a
- 4:22Speaker 1: little bit, so there's still a lot unsettled with that,
- 4:24Speaker 1: but Daquan Wright was part of that and is trying
- 4:27Speaker 1: to come back and play, except this time adding to
- 4:32Speaker 1: the intrigue, not at Ole Miss. but at LSU because
- 4:37Speaker 1: his head coach at Ole Miss, Lane Kiffin, is now
- 4:41Speaker 1: the head coach at LSU.
- 4:42Speaker 2: That adds to all of that.
- 4:45Speaker 1: All right, let's hear from some coaches on this, and
- 4:47Speaker 1: then we've got something else to tell you. First of all,
- 4:49Speaker 1: here's Lane Kiffin defending their strategy to go out and
- 4:54Speaker 1: actively recruit guys who are in the portal who figured
- 4:58Speaker 1: they were going to be in the National Football League
- 4:59Speaker 1: but didn't make an NFL roster.
- 5:02Speaker 3: All right, so I'll beat you to it.
- 5:05Speaker 2: So we.
- 5:09Speaker 6: Have made a decision to recruit some kids around the country.
- 5:12Speaker 6: And through these multiple injunctions around the country, which this
- 5:17Speaker 6: is not a first time. They've been in college sports
- 5:20Speaker 6: for a while.
- 5:20Speaker 2: A group of players were.
- 5:23Speaker 6: Granted a fifth year of eligibility around the country in
- 5:27Speaker 6: multiple sports. And through them winning their injunction and entry
- 5:34Speaker 6: into the portal, They're available to recruit. And so ourselves,
- 5:38Speaker 6: like many places around the country, are recruiting them. And
- 5:44Speaker 6: at the end of the day, because of these rulings,
- 5:47Speaker 6: they're either going to play for you or they're going
- 5:49Speaker 6: to play somewhere else around the country. So we've made
- 5:54Speaker 6: a decision to recruit them like probably most people are.
- 5:58Speaker 1: So that's Kiffin's side of it. The guy who replaced
- 6:02Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin. At Ole Miss, his defensive coordinator, Pete Golding,
- 6:06Speaker 1: was asked about his thoughts. And there's a whole other
- 6:11Speaker 1: chapter in the Ole Miss LSU saga that really gets
- 6:16Speaker 1: into cloak and dagger stuff that we'll get into later.
- 6:19Speaker 1: But with regard to this issue, Golding was asked for
- 6:24Speaker 1: his overall statement on college football and where this is
- 6:27Speaker 1: all headed with these kinds of cases.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I think, obviously, it's unique times.
- 6:31Speaker 7: I mean, I think every year has been a little
- 6:32Speaker 7: something different, you know, kind of since COVID.
- 6:34Speaker 2: There's been something new.
- 6:35Speaker 7: That you've had to manage and go through, and it's
- 6:38Speaker 7: always very fluid. It feels like it changes every day
- 6:41Speaker 7: with a different court case and all those type of things.
- 6:43Speaker 7: But I think this one's unique based on the timing
- 6:45Speaker 7: of things, kind of like we talked about in the
- 6:46Speaker 7: last press conference. Here were the guidelines in which you
- 6:50Speaker 7: were responsible for managing a roster. And there's numbers and
- 6:52Speaker 7: there's specific things that obviously you've got to do to
- 6:54Speaker 7: put yourself in a position to win.
- 6:56Speaker 2: So I think from the.
- 6:57Speaker 7: Very beginning, some of these guys that have become available
- 7:00Speaker 7: to the outside looking in don't always fit a need
- 7:04Speaker 7: where we're at.
- 7:04Speaker 2: And that's kind of what I said last week.
- 7:06Speaker 7: It was like from an injury component, there are things
- 7:08Speaker 7: that you've had some banged up spots to where obviously
- 7:11Speaker 7: if this is what we're going to do and this
- 7:13Speaker 7: is what everybody's doing within the framework of college football,
- 7:16Speaker 7: then there are certain spots that obviously we'd have interest
- 7:18Speaker 7: in too.
- 7:19Speaker 8: And there are certain.
- 7:20Speaker 7: Spots to where We filled with really good players that
- 7:24Speaker 7: have gone through a spring and gone through a summer
- 7:25Speaker 7: and done everything the right way that obviously.
- 7:28Speaker 2: There's not a need there.
- 7:30Speaker 7: I'm not going to get into my feelings of what
- 7:31Speaker 7: I think it does for the sport. I don't think
- 7:33Speaker 7: we got enough time right now to do all that
- 7:35Speaker 7: type of stuff. But I think all of us obviously
- 7:38Speaker 7: have a responsibility to our current roster. And then there's
- 7:40Speaker 7: a responsibility in the chair that you're in also to
- 7:43Speaker 7: you know, produce a really good football team. I'm strictly
- 7:45Speaker 7: basing it on, okay, what's in the room right now, right?
- 7:48Speaker 7: Our numbers are where they're supposed to be. We've got
- 7:50Speaker 7: really good players that we went and recruited, invested and
- 7:53Speaker 7: bought into what we're asking them to do. And then
- 7:55Speaker 7: there are some spots that we got banged up and
- 7:57Speaker 7: that room wasn't what it is in January. You know,
- 7:59Speaker 7: we got some guys that with some season in the
- 8:01Speaker 7: injuries at certain spots that if it becomes available to
- 8:04Speaker 7: give us more opportunity and more depth, and that's what
- 8:06Speaker 7: we're all doing, then we'll have to.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Look into that.
- 8:09Speaker 1: And then there's Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian, because when
- 8:11Speaker 1: this thing first broke yesterday, we discussed, you know, what
- 8:19Speaker 1: was going on, and Sark was asked about it in
- 8:21Speaker 1: his media availability, and it seems like it is apropos
- 8:26Speaker 1: now to drop it in again here. Here's his thoughts
- 8:29Speaker 1: when asked specifically about the Daquan Wright situation in the
- 8:33Speaker 1: state of college football.
- 8:35Speaker 8: I don't even know. You know, this stuff is... We
- 8:40Speaker 8: are like changing every day right now. It feels like
- 8:43Speaker 8: almost every three hours, you know, there's a new message
- 8:48Speaker 8: from Commissioner Sankey about something or something that somebody's reporting
- 8:54Speaker 8: in the media that this is what might occur or
- 8:57Speaker 8: what's occurring. I think it's important for us here, especially
- 9:00Speaker 8: like we have a really good team and focusing on
- 9:04Speaker 8: our team to me is paramount and the most important
- 9:07Speaker 8: thing right now. Anything auxiliary outside of that, I'm not
- 9:12Speaker 8: in so much of a rush to say, oh, let's
- 9:14Speaker 8: go do that now or let's go do that now.
- 9:16Speaker 8: Like I like our team. If and or when, if
- 9:20Speaker 8: there's something that popped up to where we could upgrade it, great.
- 9:24Speaker 8: But we don't even know. Like today you can take them,
- 9:26Speaker 8: tomorrow you can't. I don't know what's going to happen.
- 9:29Speaker 8: And I don't even know if it's good or not.
- 9:30Speaker 8: I'll be honest with you. I don't know if it's
- 9:32Speaker 8: good because like for us, I know we've got a
- 9:35Speaker 8: locker room full of guys who have been working together
- 9:37Speaker 8: and their connectivity is so good for the last eight months.
- 9:42Speaker 8: Is it worth rocking that boat by bringing somebody in
- 9:46Speaker 8: that isn't familiar with your program? Cole was a little different.
- 9:50Speaker 8: He'd been with our program for four years. He knows
- 9:52Speaker 8: who we are. He knows Coach Flood. He knows those
- 9:54Speaker 8: guys in that room. To bring in a true outsider
- 9:58Speaker 8: and to think like, all of a sudden he's going
- 10:01Speaker 8: to be our quarterback. Like, I don't know how to
- 10:03Speaker 8: do that. Like I wouldn't know how to do that.
- 10:05Speaker 8: And I get every situation is a little bit different. Um,
- 10:09Speaker 8: and maybe there's better coaches out there than us, you know,
- 10:11Speaker 8: but I just think it's a delicate situation. The powers
- 10:15Speaker 8: that be are ultimately going to get to a final decision,
- 10:19Speaker 8: and then when the final decision is made, then we're
- 10:22Speaker 8: going to have choices to make, or maybe we will
- 10:23Speaker 8: have no choices to make. I don't know. We'll have
- 10:26Speaker 8: to find out.
- 10:27Speaker 1: So there's their thoughts on that. Now, coming up, we're
- 10:30Speaker 1: going to hear more from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian,
- 10:33Speaker 1: mainly about his football team.
- 10:35Speaker 2: We'll do that.
- 10:36Speaker 1: But there'll be more on this, and then another– curious
- 10:40Speaker 1: wrinkle between Ole Miss and LSU. We'll get to that
- 10:43Speaker 1: as well. But also, coming up on the program, we
- 10:46Speaker 1: do have Inconceivable this hour. We do have one little
- 10:49Speaker 1: junk food, fast food update item for you in that. Then,
- 10:55Speaker 1: in the three o'clock hour, it's Tuesdays with Tepper, our
- 10:59Speaker 1: weekly conversation with the editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine,
- 11:03Speaker 1: Greg Tepper, as we'll talk college football and take a look.
- 11:08Speaker 1: We'll get our final preview of high school football. We'll
- 11:15Speaker 1: look at Class 6A and some of the gigantic matchups
- 11:19Speaker 1: that are going to go on for a non-district season
- 11:21Speaker 1: opening week.
- 11:22Speaker 2: We'll get his thoughts on that as well. And we'll
- 11:26Speaker 2: continue right here.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us on a Tuesday afternoon
- 11:28Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the
- 11:30Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app. It's a taxing Tuesday here on 13 Under
- 11:38Speaker 1: the Zone, which means our return cuts include, not limited to,
- 11:43Speaker 1: but certainly include in the 4 o'clock hour, a bump
- 11:46Speaker 1: back from the king, George Strait, in the 3 o'clock hour,
- 11:49Speaker 1: the iconic Willie Nelson, and here in the 2 o'clock hour,
- 11:54Speaker 1: the Immortals.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Stevie ray vaughn.
- 11:56Speaker 4: Here's life without you a little slower softer ballad from
- 12:02Speaker 4: the immortal stevie ray vaughn and uh it's no longer
- 12:05Speaker 4: time for life without football it's it's counting.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Down yeah okay good way to bounce back on tuesday.
- 12:16Speaker 1: All right, let's take a look at and hear from
- 12:18Speaker 1: Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian. First of all, and this
- 12:20Speaker 1: is from yesterday, and it kind of falls into the
- 12:24Speaker 1: category of upon further review, meaning a follow-up in-depth look
- 12:30Speaker 1: at the video from the scrimmage, the likes, the dislikes,
- 12:35Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Here's the head coach.
- 12:39Speaker 8: You know, just a couple things, you know, as always
- 12:41Speaker 8: coming out of the scrimmage, I try to give my
- 12:44Speaker 8: assessment as best I can, um, from in real time.
- 12:49Speaker 8: And then you get a chance to kind of set
- 12:51Speaker 8: back and look at some things coming out of it,
- 12:54Speaker 8: you know, and after you watch the tape, you know,
- 12:56Speaker 8: I really, I really felt like defensively, um, you know,
- 13:01Speaker 8: I credit the coaches, all of them and the defensive players,
- 13:04Speaker 8: like their energy was really good Saturday. I felt like
- 13:08Speaker 8: they embrace the conditions and they attack the day and
- 13:11Speaker 8: you could feel it just kind of throughout the day
- 13:14Speaker 8: the way they performed. On the flip side, that was
- 13:17Speaker 8: what I was trying to get at Saturday from an
- 13:19Speaker 8: offensive perspective. It felt a little, I guess lethargic is
- 13:23Speaker 8: the best word, for what we've been in practice, for
- 13:25Speaker 8: how good of a week they had. And so we've
- 13:28Speaker 8: got to do a better job from an offensive coach's
- 13:30Speaker 8: perspective of making sure the mentality is right when we're
- 13:33Speaker 8: in those conditions. Because clearly, You know, in a couple weeks,
- 13:36Speaker 8: it'll be 230 kick against Texas State. And we've got
- 13:40Speaker 8: to be ready to perform under whatever conditions that we're
- 13:43Speaker 8: faced with. So that was kind of the first thing.
- 13:46Speaker 8: I thought the second thing from a defensive perspective, as
- 13:49Speaker 8: good as the day was, our ability to communicate has
- 13:53Speaker 8: got to continue to improve. We've all got to be
- 13:56Speaker 8: on the same page. At the end, the touchdown that
- 13:58Speaker 8: Arch hits Emmitt Mosley on to kind of win it
- 14:02Speaker 8: was just a lack of communication. One guy's playing one coverage,
- 14:05Speaker 8: the other guys are playing another, and you end up
- 14:07Speaker 8: not guarding a guy. And so those are the things
- 14:08Speaker 8: we need to guard against, we need to continue upon.
- 14:11Speaker 8: and then improving on getting aligned. You know, when teams
- 14:14Speaker 8: start to use up-tempo, we've got to be able to
- 14:16Speaker 8: get aligned and be on the same page. And again,
- 14:18Speaker 8: that goes back to communication. So we've got to continue
- 14:21Speaker 8: to work on that. I felt like offensively, you know,
- 14:24Speaker 8: from an improvement standpoint, there were too many simple MAs.
- 14:29Speaker 8: And when I say MAs, I'm referring to missed assignments,
- 14:31Speaker 8: things that we have done well for two and a
- 14:34Speaker 8: half weeks' time And all of a sudden we got
- 14:36Speaker 8: into that arena and we made some mistakes that were
- 14:41Speaker 8: uncharacteristic to us. So we've got to get to the
- 14:43Speaker 8: bottom of that. And too many times I use the
- 14:45Speaker 8: term we played mindless football offensively. We were running plays
- 14:50Speaker 8: rather than playing football in a competitive setting, playing the
- 14:53Speaker 8: game of football. It's different when you're in practice and
- 14:56Speaker 8: it's all scripted and, you know, you run the play,
- 14:59Speaker 8: whatever happens, the ball goes to the right hash and
- 15:01Speaker 8: you run the next play. When you get in a scrimmage,
- 15:03Speaker 8: you're trying to make it as game-like as possible. There's
- 15:05Speaker 8: consequences for not doing things right. It may be a sack.
- 15:09Speaker 8: It may be a false start. It may be a
- 15:12Speaker 8: missed block, whatever that looks like. We can't play mindless
- 15:16Speaker 8: football when we get into scrimmage and game settings. We
- 15:19Speaker 8: need to apply the game to the play and the
- 15:22Speaker 8: play to the game. And so I think those are
- 15:24Speaker 8: things that are easily fixable for us, but we have
- 15:28Speaker 8: to be intentional with our ability to fix those things
- 15:30Speaker 8: to get that done. um i do think the run
- 15:33Speaker 8: game was really productive um you know it's hard when
- 15:37Speaker 8: you're majority of a thud scrimmage because you you know
- 15:41Speaker 8: you're not tackling and so it's almost like two-hand touch
- 15:43Speaker 8: to some degree and what do you got them down
- 15:45Speaker 8: what do you not have and that's okay i don't
- 15:47Speaker 8: get hung up hung up on that i i'm more
- 15:49Speaker 8: focused on are we blocking people the right way are
- 15:51Speaker 8: the runners running where they're supposed to go um so
- 15:53Speaker 8: that was encouraging um And again, there were some explosive
- 15:57Speaker 8: pass plays. I feel like we missed some opportunities, but
- 16:00Speaker 8: definitely generated some, which was a good thing for us
- 16:03Speaker 8: with our ones and our twos. And so all in all,
- 16:06Speaker 8: it was a good second scrimmage for us. As I said,
- 16:09Speaker 8: today we start mock game week. Our players are going
- 16:12Speaker 8: to class after this. And so we're in kind of
- 16:16Speaker 8: game week format where we'll practice in the morning. The
- 16:19Speaker 8: structure of the week will go as such as if
- 16:21Speaker 8: we're playing a game, we'll be able to rehearse a
- 16:24Speaker 8: mock game on Saturday, and then we'll start up game
- 16:27Speaker 8: week again next week.
- 16:29Speaker 1: So you've heard me tell you about this business that
- 16:31Speaker 1: they went through the schedule or through the scrimmages. And
- 16:35Speaker 1: so now what exactly goes into the mock week to
- 16:39Speaker 1: wrap up camp?
- 16:40Speaker 2: And get ready for the game week prep for Texas State.
- 16:43Speaker 8: Well, he's had a great camp, man. I'm pumped about it.
- 16:46Speaker 8: I think his rapport with Ryan and Cam and Emmitt
- 16:50Speaker 8: is really high. I think his rapport with our running
- 16:53Speaker 8: backs is really high. I mean, those guys are good players,
- 16:56Speaker 8: and they can catch the ball, and that takes timing.
- 16:58Speaker 8: That takes rapport, and so I'm very excited. I'm excited
- 17:02Speaker 8: for him. I think he's going to play really well. Again,
- 17:04Speaker 8: we got two more weeks to to continue to sharpen up,
- 17:08Speaker 8: but I'm very excited for where he's at and what
- 17:10Speaker 8: type of camp he's at.
- 17:12Speaker 2: So is there anything else he needs to see for March?
- 17:14Speaker 8: I feel like that's a loaded question, David, but I'm
- 17:16Speaker 8: going to go with get better.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Okay.
- 17:20Speaker 3: All right.
- 17:20Speaker 1: And so now, would he say that the defense is
- 17:23Speaker 1: still ahead of his offense?
- 17:26Speaker 8: No, no, no, no, no, no. I'm not taking anything
- 17:28Speaker 8: away from the defense. I'm taking away from you line
- 17:31Speaker 8: up in the wrong spot. I'm talking about... blocking the
- 17:36Speaker 8: right person. I'm talking about running the right route or
- 17:39Speaker 8: running the right route at the correct depth. I'm talking
- 17:42Speaker 8: about things that are inconsequential to who our opponent is.
- 17:46Speaker 8: It's the things that we can control. And I felt
- 17:49Speaker 8: like there were too many things Saturday that we had
- 17:53Speaker 8: shown to do right. over the previous two and a
- 17:56Speaker 8: half weeks that we didn't do correct on Saturday. And
- 17:58Speaker 8: to me, that was a byproduct of our guys being
- 18:02Speaker 8: a little lethargic, maybe succumbing to the conditions and the heat.
- 18:08Speaker 8: You know, fatigue makes cowards of us all, you know,
- 18:11Speaker 8: and so we got to trust our physical, mental conditioning
- 18:14Speaker 8: that we can perform under those elements and do our job.
- 18:17Speaker 8: And we didn't do it well enough Saturday to what
- 18:20Speaker 8: we're capable of doing.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Next comes the usual questions that folks will ask about
- 18:25Speaker 1: the two deep and how he feels about it. Is
- 18:27Speaker 1: it kind of locked in where he wants it to be?
- 18:30Speaker 1: And is he seeing more out of that two deep
- 18:33Speaker 1: from Jonah Williams in the safety spot?
- 18:36Speaker 8: I feel good about our two deep. I mean, you know,
- 18:39Speaker 8: it's hard because I've had years where it's like, man,
- 18:41Speaker 8: it's hard to tell the difference between our ones and
- 18:43Speaker 8: our twos. It's, you know, when you've got a roster
- 18:46Speaker 8: like that, we have some really, really high, high level
- 18:49Speaker 8: players clearly on our roster that, Make no mistake, there's
- 18:52Speaker 8: probably going to be a little drop-off if those guys
- 18:55Speaker 8: don't happen to be in there. But I think across
- 18:56Speaker 8: the board, the depth on this roster and the ability
- 19:00Speaker 8: to perform under those conditions, whether you're a one or
- 19:04Speaker 8: a two, we feel very good about with those guys.
- 19:07Speaker 8: I would say we are counting on Jonah, and we're
- 19:10Speaker 8: pushing him, and he's come a long way. From where
- 19:12Speaker 8: he was those first three or four practices to where
- 19:15Speaker 8: he is today, extremely encouraging. And I'm not just talking
- 19:18Speaker 8: about on defense. I'm talking about on special teams as well.
- 19:21Speaker 8: I mean, we actually did our good, bad, and ugly
- 19:23Speaker 8: from last week this morning. And one of the plays
- 19:26Speaker 8: I highlighted was Jonah on punt coverage, you know, and
- 19:28Speaker 8: so his ability to contribute not only on defense, but
- 19:32Speaker 8: as I said, on special teams, I think will be
- 19:33Speaker 8: big for us.
- 19:35Speaker 1: And then, you know, this is kind of an adjunct
- 19:38Speaker 1: to what we were talking about in the first a
- 19:40Speaker 1: few minutes of the program and his comment yesterday about
- 19:43Speaker 1: the NCAA rulings and not knowing which way to go.
- 19:45Speaker 1: A lot of this does stem from the five rules
- 19:50Speaker 1: for five, which Sark was definitely on board with for
- 19:53Speaker 1: the five for five, but that doesn't mean there wouldn't
- 19:56Speaker 1: be some unintended consequences.
- 19:58Speaker 8: I like it. But I think that especially for our
- 20:02Speaker 8: younger players, it's motivating for them to know like in
- 20:05Speaker 8: any way, shape or form in any capacity that, that
- 20:09Speaker 8: they can contribute to our success on game day, that
- 20:11Speaker 8: they can have a role on the team, it's worth it.
- 20:14Speaker 8: If it's covering five kicks on kickoff, you know, if
- 20:16Speaker 8: it's getting in a game late and getting those eight
- 20:20Speaker 8: snaps at the end of a game, maybe when you
- 20:22Speaker 8: have a lead and how valuable those reps are. And
- 20:25Speaker 8: then on the flip side, a guy plays three games
- 20:28Speaker 8: early in the year and you're in week eight and
- 20:31Speaker 8: it's like, well, I don't know if I want to
- 20:33Speaker 8: play Billy. Because if I play him, I might burn
- 20:35Speaker 8: his red shirt. Well, but he's earning his way close
- 20:38Speaker 8: to playing time. We don't have to worry about that
- 20:40Speaker 8: stuff anymore. Now we really can just keep developing all
- 20:42Speaker 8: of our players. When they earn their opportunities, we can
- 20:45Speaker 8: put them out there. They can play. They can compete.
- 20:48Speaker 8: I think that is healthy for the psyche of the
- 20:51Speaker 8: young men now more than ever.
- 20:53Speaker 1: We'll hear more from Sark coming up next hour. The
- 20:56Speaker 1: Houston Texans getting ready for their preseason finale as the
- 21:00Speaker 1: Texans come off the game last weekend against the Raiders.
- 21:03Speaker 1: And because of the injury and Jaden Higgins being out,
- 21:08Speaker 1: They went out and signed Zay Jones and Sterling Shepard,
- 21:10Speaker 1: and D'Amico Ryans was talking about that.
- 21:13Speaker 9: We signed two veteran guys. We'll see what they can
- 21:15Speaker 9: provide when it comes to adding.
- 21:17Speaker 8: Depth to our receiver room.
- 21:18Speaker 9: We know, everybody knows, no secret that we lost a
- 21:21Speaker 9: very significant piece to our receiver room and Zayden Higgins,
- 21:25Speaker 9: so still trying to find a way to help out
- 21:28Speaker 9: in the receiver room, and that's what those two guys provide.
- 21:31Speaker 9: Veteran experience, guys done it before, done it at a
- 21:34Speaker 9: high level, played a lot of different systems. We'll see
- 21:35Speaker 9: what they can bring to us.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Yeah, and that'll make you feel old, too, remembering when
- 21:39Speaker 1: Zay Jones was tearing it.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Up for Austin High.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Loyal forever.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 21:44Speaker 1: And his dad, Robert Jones, was covering the Cowboys when
- 21:47Speaker 1: he was playing for the Cowboys as well. All right,
- 21:51Speaker 1: the offensive line. and not afraid to mix it up
- 21:55Speaker 1: in the combined practices, and they've been pretty physical. And
- 21:59Speaker 1: D'Amico was asked about the competitive nature of the O-line.
- 22:02Speaker 9: The competitive nature of our offensive line has definitely picked
- 22:05Speaker 9: up from where it has been.
- 22:06Speaker 8: I really love, with our first group, the way they..
- 22:10Speaker 9: Played in the game on Thursday, just the way we
- 22:13Speaker 9: had clean pockets to throw the football, the way we
- 22:15Speaker 9: cleaned up the pocket when we were free.
- 22:17Speaker 8: So it was a lot of really.
- 22:18Speaker 9: Good things, good positive things to build on from.
- 22:20Speaker 3: The offensive line.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Yeah, and there are other things he wants to see
- 22:23Speaker 1: improved upon, especially... Coming out of the second half of
- 22:26Speaker 1: that preseason game last Thursday when the Raiders kind of
- 22:29Speaker 1: took over with their backups and won the game.
- 22:31Speaker 9: From the second half is just being disciplined. We have
- 22:34Speaker 9: a lot of young guys in there. Some guys have
- 22:36Speaker 9: only been here for a few days. So it's really
- 22:38Speaker 9: just being disciplined, being where you're supposed to be, being
- 22:41Speaker 9: able to make a play. So when I look at
- 22:44Speaker 9: the game, really watching that first half and what I saw,
- 22:47Speaker 9: saw our guys do i saw our guys take a
- 22:49Speaker 9: step and what i asked them to do and let's
- 22:51Speaker 9: rep our style of play and our guys did that
- 22:54Speaker 9: they repped our style really well and i thought we
- 22:56Speaker 9: had a really great first half and the other guys
- 22:59Speaker 9: were getting those opportunities in the second half just have
- 23:01Speaker 9: to find a way to be where they're supposed to
- 23:02Speaker 9: be and make a play when it's your time to
- 23:04Speaker 9: make a play.
- 23:05Speaker 1: All right next uh you know talking about the depth
- 23:09Speaker 1: he's trying to build in the secondary in specific at
- 23:11Speaker 1: corner and i was asked for thoughts about that including
- 23:15Speaker 1: jaylen smith.
- 23:17Speaker 9: Jalen Smith is continuing to improve. He made a few
- 23:20Speaker 9: plays in the game. What I love about Jalen Smith
- 23:23Speaker 9: is the play of the game to me is a
- 23:26Speaker 9: run breaks out on us on the left side there.
- 23:28Speaker 9: And Jalen is the right corner stuck at the line
- 23:31Speaker 9: of scrimmage. But he plays with elite effort, runs the
- 23:34Speaker 9: guy down, gets him down. And the next play, that's
- 23:37Speaker 9: when Wade picks it off and takes.
- 23:39Speaker 3: It to the house.
- 23:40Speaker 9: So it just really... It reinforces what I teach, and
- 23:44Speaker 9: that's playing with elite effort. No matter how a play
- 23:47Speaker 9: breaks down, you play with great effort. You can make plays.
- 23:49Speaker 9: This is what Jalen has done, and he continues to progress.
- 23:52Speaker 9: He's done a really good job on special teams as
- 23:54Speaker 9: our gunner. So he's in his second year, lost a
- 23:57Speaker 9: lot of time his first year with injury, but he's
- 24:00Speaker 9: stepping back in in a really good way, positive way,
- 24:03Speaker 9: showing up for us.
- 24:05Speaker 1: And one more from D'Amico asking about Trent Brown's impact
- 24:09Speaker 1: on that offensive line that he was discussing earlier.
- 24:11Speaker 9: It's been valuable to us to have Trent at this time.
- 24:15Speaker 9: We didn't have Trent. He wasn't able to go through
- 24:17Speaker 9: training camp. So I know for anybody who's able to
- 24:20Speaker 9: go through camp and get those reps, it's only going
- 24:22Speaker 9: to be beneficial for you to come to the season.
- 24:24Speaker 9: And Trent has done a good job. If you look
- 24:27Speaker 9: at the runs and when we're out there, you're running
- 24:29Speaker 9: behind Trent, there's going to be a lane. And that's
- 24:31Speaker 9: what he does. He moves people with ease. It's hard
- 24:34Speaker 9: to get around him. In pass rush, it's hard.
- 24:37Speaker 8: To go through him.
- 24:37Speaker 9: So he's one of the better guys with his size
- 24:41Speaker 9: and his ability. I think the quarterback likes him and
- 24:46Speaker 9: also the running backs like running behind him because he
- 24:48Speaker 9: provides that kind of lane for us.
- 24:50Speaker 2: All right.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Good stuff there from D'Amico Rimes. We'll hear more from
- 24:53Speaker 1: him coming up next hour.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Up next..
- 24:57Speaker 1: It's inconceivable on a Tuesday afternoon. We'll do that when
- 25:00Speaker 1: we continue here on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the
- 25:03Speaker 1: Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Here he is now, Craig Webb.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Ready to go with hour number two of the program
- 25:31Speaker 1: here on a Texan Tuesday. On Sports Radio AM 13
- 25:36Speaker 1: Under the Zone, Craig Way alongside the producer, Jay Kerman.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Glad to have you with us.
- 25:41Speaker 1: And we spent a great deal of time, as you
- 25:44Speaker 1: might imagine, in the first hour on college football. This
- 25:47Speaker 1: business going on with the SEC and Big Ten speaking
- 25:51Speaker 1: up against players having an opportunity to return to college
- 25:55Speaker 1: after not making it in the NFL season. Daquan Wright,
- 25:59Speaker 1: of course, now becomes the poster child for that sort
- 26:03Speaker 1: of thing. We had a lot to do with that
- 26:04Speaker 1: the first time. We'll have some more coming up on
- 26:07Speaker 1: all of that. However, we want to hear some more
- 26:10Speaker 1: from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, and this is largely...
- 26:14Speaker 1: about his football team getting ready for the season 11
- 26:18Speaker 1: days off. Also, not only that, we'll visit with Greg Tepper,
- 26:24Speaker 1: the editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, our Tuesdays
- 26:28Speaker 1: with Tepp.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Segment coming up in just a few moments.
- 26:33Speaker 1: We'll talk about what is, and I didn't realize it
- 26:37Speaker 1: until I started looking at it while doing some homework
- 26:40Speaker 1: last night, a massive If you want to call it
- 26:45Speaker 1: that for a non-district week of high school football, even
- 26:49Speaker 1: the first week of the season, nevertheless, a huge weekend
- 26:55Speaker 1: in terms of ranked teams matchup. I've never seen ever
- 27:00Speaker 1: on the first week of a season this many head-to-head
- 27:03Speaker 1: matchups between ranked teams. Now, some of it's cross-classification. In fact,
- 27:08Speaker 1: a good chunk of it is. And some, there's even
- 27:10Speaker 1: a couple of occasions where teams... are, and I'll use
- 27:13Speaker 1: the phrase again when Tepper's on, because it's one of
- 27:15Speaker 1: his favorite phrases, punching up two weight classes, so to speak.
- 27:20Speaker 2: And we'll get to all that coming up in a
- 27:21Speaker 2: few minutes.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Now, Bastrop doesn't have that per se, but they have quite.
- 27:26Speaker 2: An assignment on their hands this weekend for the opener
- 27:28Speaker 2: you're calling on Friday.
- 27:29Speaker 4: Yeah, they'll be headed out to Montgomery facing the Lake
- 27:31Speaker 4: Creek Lions. They've got a new head coach in Cale Melton,
- 27:34Speaker 4: who I'll get to talk with tomorrow. I spoke with
- 27:35Speaker 4: Jake Greedle earlier today. It's going to be a really
- 27:38Speaker 4: exciting matchup. And I think it's interesting to see how
- 27:41Speaker 4: the different teams approach this first week of the season
- 27:44Speaker 4: or what used to be, like you mentioned, the zero
- 27:46Speaker 4: week in terms of scheduling the type of test, right,
- 27:49Speaker 4: that is able to expose your weaknesses, but a team
- 27:52Speaker 4: that you hope if you.
- 27:53Speaker 3: Play your best, you're able to beat.
- 27:55Speaker 4: And so I wonder why, and I'm sure you and
- 27:57Speaker 4: Tepper will discuss this, why this year you're noticing a
- 28:01Speaker 4: big increase in those types of matchups that really gets
- 28:03Speaker 4: you excited.
- 28:04Speaker 3: Does it have to do with the realignment year?
- 28:06Speaker 1: I think realignment has something to do with it. because
- 28:09Speaker 1: you have some teams that have been in one classification
- 28:12Speaker 1: for several years. One of those comes to mind is
- 28:16Speaker 1: Richmond Randall, now up in 5AB1. Aledo is in 6A now.
- 28:22Speaker 1: So you've got several teams that were, for many years
- 28:26Speaker 1: in some cases, locked in one classification. So they move up,
- 28:30Speaker 1: and maybe they might play somebody that they might not
- 28:33Speaker 1: have played in non-district because they were in the same
- 28:37Speaker 1: division or at least in the same classification in the past,
- 28:40Speaker 1: but they're playing them now. So we'll visit with Tep
- 28:44Speaker 1: about that and get his thoughts on that. And we'll revisit,
- 28:46Speaker 1: like I said, the college football hue and cry that's
- 28:50Speaker 1: going up right now with regard to the eligibility situation.
- 28:54Speaker 1: But I want to get back to just discussing some
- 28:56Speaker 1: football from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian. Again, Sark did
- 29:00Speaker 1: one availability after... the scrimmage on Saturday and came back
- 29:04Speaker 1: yesterday and did another availability on where his team is
- 29:09Speaker 1: and some specifics. For example, talking about Andre Kojo, who's
- 29:13Speaker 1: coming off the injury and really showing out along that
- 29:17Speaker 1: offensive front at tackle, but also the possibility that he
- 29:20Speaker 1: may wind up being in a guard spot.
- 29:23Speaker 8: We need him to be a really good tackle right now.
- 29:27Speaker 8: We'll be fine at guard. I think obviously in the
- 29:30Speaker 8: situation that we're in right now, these are invaluable reps,
- 29:33Speaker 8: which we touched on. You know, and again, I knock
- 29:36Speaker 8: on wood a lot around here, but, you know, I
- 29:39Speaker 8: hope he doesn't ever have to go in in a
- 29:40Speaker 8: dire situation, right? But I hope he gets quality reps
- 29:44Speaker 8: this season. And so I know I'm speaking out of
- 29:46Speaker 8: both sides of my mouth, but, you know, like Trevor
- 29:49Speaker 8: was a few years ago for us, the value of
- 29:51Speaker 8: having a third tackle is so important. You know, I
- 29:55Speaker 8: think back to that 24 season. You know, if we
- 29:57Speaker 8: don't have Trevor Goosby, I don't know if we're in
- 30:00Speaker 8: the semifinals against Ohio State, you know, because I don't
- 30:02Speaker 8: know if he, you know, if we could play against
- 30:05Speaker 8: the likes of, you know, A & M, Georgia, Arizona State,
- 30:08Speaker 8: Clemson with a backup tackle for the most part of
- 30:11Speaker 8: those games. And so we've got to get him ready
- 30:13Speaker 8: to do that. And we'll be fine at guard.
- 30:18Speaker 1: So when Sark watched the tape of Kojo, what were
- 30:21Speaker 1: the things that stood out to him about the youngster?
- 30:24Speaker 8: Yeah, I thought he was good. You know, I think
- 30:25Speaker 8: inevitably there's plenty of coachable moments, like every player. You know,
- 30:30Speaker 8: there wasn't a guy on our team that didn't get
- 30:32Speaker 8: coached on having to be better coming out of Saturday,
- 30:34Speaker 8: and Andre was no different.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Okay, all right.
- 30:36Speaker 1: And then since we're still talking about the offensive front,
- 30:39Speaker 1: about Lawrence Seymour, who's back from injury, and who.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Was one of those guys.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Now, there's been a lot of zeroing in on the
- 30:46Speaker 1: things that were not good about the scrimmage. And Sark
- 30:50Speaker 1: was right at the top of the list talking about
- 30:52Speaker 1: those things. saying there were a lot of things he
- 30:54Speaker 1: didn't like. And of course, anytime something like that gets
- 30:58Speaker 1: mentioned from the head coach, then there's going to be
- 31:02Speaker 1: the wailing and gnashing of teeth from the faithful, the
- 31:04Speaker 1: fan base.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Well, no, we're regressing.
- 31:07Speaker 1: The season hasn't started yet, that kind of thing. But
- 31:11Speaker 1: he's just keeping it real, talking about how things are
- 31:14Speaker 1: not the way they're supposed to be.
- 31:17Speaker 2: That said..
- 31:19Speaker 1: There were players, he said, and there were units at
- 31:22Speaker 1: times who had good scrimmages, and Seymour is one of
- 31:25Speaker 1: those guys.
- 31:27Speaker 8: Yeah, Lawrence was back today, which was great for us.
- 31:31Speaker 8: You know, I will say two guys, and I'm going
- 31:32Speaker 8: to brag on these two guys, and I'm not answering
- 31:35Speaker 8: your question, but they both had good scrimmages. I could
- 31:38Speaker 8: argue the two hardest playing players on our team right
- 31:43Speaker 8: now are Grayson Littleton and Emmitt Mosley. And they're playing
- 31:48Speaker 8: at an extremely high level. Not a good level. I'm
- 31:52Speaker 8: talking extremely high level. But what's interesting about that, they
- 31:56Speaker 8: go against each other every day. And so when you
- 31:58Speaker 8: talk about iron sharpening iron and two guys that push
- 32:02Speaker 8: themselves every day, whether it's in the pass game, the
- 32:04Speaker 8: run game, it just shows. And then what happens with
- 32:09Speaker 8: the byproduct? They play good, you know, when the time comes.
- 32:12Speaker 8: And so those are two guys that I don't know
- 32:14Speaker 8: if I mentioned a whole lot Saturday, but But I
- 32:16Speaker 8: will tell you, they've had great camps. They had a
- 32:18Speaker 8: really good scrimmage Saturday. And I'm excited for them for
- 32:22Speaker 8: this upcoming season. One, for Grayson, year two, new system.
- 32:25Speaker 8: You can feel his confidence. And two, for Emmitt, healthy.
- 32:29Speaker 8: This time last year, he wasn't even practicing. And healthy,
- 32:33Speaker 8: playing fast. And he's coming off of the way he
- 32:36Speaker 8: ended last season. I'm excited for those two guys.
- 32:40Speaker 1: We'll hear some more from Sark coming up next hour
- 32:43Speaker 1: about his football team as they head down the home
- 32:47Speaker 1: stretch of the fall camp practice. The fall camp practices
- 32:50Speaker 1: will end this week, and then you're in the game
- 32:54Speaker 1: week next week. In fact, you've heard me mention this.
- 32:58Speaker 1: They have what they call the mock game on Saturday
- 33:02Speaker 1: where all of the other implements that come go into
- 33:07Speaker 1: a season opener, staying in the hotel the night before
- 33:10Speaker 1: the game, having team breakfast the morning of a game,
- 33:15Speaker 1: getting the guys taped up, all the other regular timed
- 33:21Speaker 1: routines down to the lineups being introduced and going out
- 33:25Speaker 1: onto the field and warmups and all that other kind
- 33:27Speaker 1: of stuff. That's the stuff they'll do this coming week.
- 33:30Speaker 1: It won't really go into a huge practice thing, For them.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Because they had that in the last scrimmage. And they
- 33:37Speaker 1: are practicing all this week. And of course they'll have
- 33:40Speaker 1: their game week practices as well. But they'll do all
- 33:43Speaker 1: of those other things. The trappings of a game. And
- 33:48Speaker 1: a regular season contest. And in this case a season opener.
- 33:50Speaker 1: They'll do that coming up this Saturday. But up next
- 33:53Speaker 1: we'll talk. College football overall and high school football overall
- 33:57Speaker 1: in the state of Texas. Tuesdays with TEP, our conversation
- 34:00Speaker 1: with Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine,
- 34:03Speaker 1: is up next here on this Tuesday afternoon on Sports
- 34:05Speaker 1: Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Here on a Texan Tuesday on 13.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Under the Zone, as we say.
- 34:17Speaker 1: On the 2 o'clock hour, we hear from the immortal
- 34:19Speaker 1: Stevie Ray Vaughan on a return cut. In the 4
- 34:21Speaker 1: o'clock hour, it's the King George Strait. And here in
- 34:24Speaker 1: the 3 o'clock hour, the iconic Willie Nelson with some
- 34:28Speaker 1: working man blues going on here.
- 34:30Speaker 4: Yeah, covering another iconic Texan's great work. And yeah, this
- 34:35Speaker 4: is the season, right? Everybody's getting back to work on
- 34:37Speaker 4: the high school football front.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Yeah, you're exactly right. I would say this, and our
- 34:42Speaker 1: guests can corroborate or refute this. That while the grind
- 34:46Speaker 1: has arrived, the blues definitely not. Because the excitement level
- 34:52Speaker 1: is here for high school football. And that means our
- 34:55Speaker 1: Tuesdays with Tepper conversation with Greg Tepper, the editor-in-chief. Dave
- 34:59Speaker 1: Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, who joins us now. I would
- 35:02Speaker 1: just say, based on the tweet you had the other
- 35:05Speaker 1: day with, I think it was on Sunday, that there are, what,
- 35:09Speaker 1: 764 high school football games this week. You have no
- 35:11Speaker 1: blues going on, even though you're cranking out the work
- 35:14Speaker 1: like the rest of us, right?
- 35:16Speaker 3: Yeah, it's hard to balance because it's like, this is
- 35:20Speaker 3: the busiest time of year for me. Like, I'm not
- 35:23Speaker 3: going to sleep much and all of that. And yet
- 35:26Speaker 3: at the same time, it's like for all the good reasons,
- 35:29Speaker 3: it's all the stuff of like, yes, absolutely. I want
- 35:31Speaker 3: to go out there and watch all these games. Like finally,
- 35:34Speaker 3: like this is, you know, we haven't had a week
- 35:36Speaker 3: like this since like early November, you know, where it's
- 35:41Speaker 3: just like everywhere you look, there's, there's games. And the
- 35:44Speaker 3: other thing about it, the other thing that I think is,
- 35:47Speaker 3: is really great. And you can tell Texas high school
- 35:49Speaker 3: football is getting going because the I have had multiple
- 35:53Speaker 3: people reach out to me and say, hey, I'm coming
- 35:57Speaker 3: in town for the Ohio State-Texas game. And I want
- 36:02Speaker 3: to make it a football weekend. And so where do
- 36:06Speaker 3: I go for, I want to get the Ohioans or
- 36:09Speaker 3: Ohio State fans who want to get the Texas high
- 36:11Speaker 3: school football experience. And I think I figured out that's
- 36:14Speaker 3: my love language. My love language is recommending high school
- 36:17Speaker 3: football games for people. And by the way, there are
- 36:21Speaker 3: two answers. The two answers, if you're coming in town,
- 36:24Speaker 3: are Vandegrift plays at Liberty Hill. Which is just a
- 36:27Speaker 3: whale of a ball game. And I said, like, you know,
- 36:30Speaker 3: the way I explain it is, like, Vandergrift won a
- 36:32Speaker 3: 6A title a couple years ago. And Liberty Hill runs
- 36:34Speaker 3: a slot T. So, like, you'll get a full– it'll
- 36:36Speaker 3: be a great crowd and stuff. The other one I
- 36:39Speaker 3: explained is, I believe– oh, boy. Gerald plays a team
- 36:44Speaker 3: from Austin ISD at House Park. And I said, the
- 36:48Speaker 3: game will be okay.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Okay.
- 36:50Speaker 3: But you're going for the venue. You're going for the scene.
- 36:54Speaker 3: You're going to be at House Park. And so those are,
- 36:56Speaker 3: if you're coming, if you're listening to, if you're an
- 36:59Speaker 3: Ohio State fan who's coming in town, there's your recommendation
- 37:02Speaker 3: for a couple of weeks from now.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Oh, I like that. I like that.
- 37:04Speaker 3: Okay.
- 37:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:05Speaker 2: So that's a couple of weeks from now.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Now, listen, I'm not going to spend much time on
- 37:09Speaker 1: college football today because this first week of high school
- 37:12Speaker 1: has just some absolutely compelling discussion topics that we have
- 37:16Speaker 1: to talk about. But, but the, most talked about topic
- 37:22Speaker 1: in college football these last couple of days really has
- 37:25Speaker 1: nothing to do with games, unless you're looking ahead to
- 37:27Speaker 1: when Ole Miss plays LSU this year. This is all
- 37:30Speaker 1: about the Daquan Wright thing. He was in a uniform
- 37:33Speaker 1: for the Cleveland Browns for their preseason game against the
- 37:36Speaker 1: Bills on Saturday. He did not appear in either preseason
- 37:39Speaker 1: game for Cleveland, but he's released, cut from the roster,
- 37:42Speaker 1: and now trying to transfer in to LSU. The, the, uh,
- 37:47Speaker 1: SEC and the big 10 of both have had spoken.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Out about this.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Uh, and, uh, a lot of folks seem to be
- 37:54Speaker 1: down on this. Uh, it, it, it smells like there's
- 37:58Speaker 1: going to be somewhere on some level in some courtroom,
- 38:03Speaker 1: some form of litigation at some point. Uh, I think
- 38:05Speaker 1: we can almost plan on that happening, but what's your
- 38:08Speaker 1: take on this?
- 38:09Speaker 2: And, and, uh, How intriguing.
- 38:12Speaker 1: We played the sound bites earlier from Lane Kiffin defending
- 38:14Speaker 1: his position. Pete Golding is replacement at Ole Miss. Sark,
- 38:18Speaker 1: they both are kind of like backing away from it.
- 38:21Speaker 1: How about your thoughts on this whole Daquan Wright situation?
- 38:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a messy one for a lot of reasons.
- 38:30Speaker 3: And I think that one of the things that I
- 38:31Speaker 3: think is really frustrating is that like you said it,
- 38:34Speaker 3: that this thing is going to get decided in a
- 38:36Speaker 3: courtroom somewhere. Like that is crazy. Like we're talking about
- 38:40Speaker 3: college football. Why are we, why, why do we as
- 38:43Speaker 3: college football fans and college football, you know, consumers have
- 38:47Speaker 3: to be up on who's in the ninth circuit court
- 38:50Speaker 3: of appeals. Like that's just like, it shouldn't be that way.
- 38:53Speaker 3: This is where you would like to have an organization
- 38:55Speaker 3: like the NCAA who is able to step in and
- 38:56Speaker 3: have the kind of teeth that they could to come
- 38:59Speaker 3: in and say, no, absolutely not. This doesn't work. But obviously,
- 39:02Speaker 3: you know, it's all roads have led to this moment. Um, uh, Look,
- 39:07Speaker 3: it's gross.
- 39:08Speaker 8: It's icky.
- 39:09Speaker 3: And I also think that, of course, it was going
- 39:15Speaker 3: to be LSU. And of course, it was going to
- 39:18Speaker 3: be Lane Kiffin. Maybe this is a controversial take, but
- 39:22Speaker 3: I think we need villains. And say what you want
- 39:27Speaker 3: about Lane Kiffin. He has flaws. embraced the black hat, okay?
- 39:32Speaker 3: He has fully embraced being the outlaw and being the
- 39:36Speaker 3: guy who is going to, you know, play around the
- 39:39Speaker 3: fringes of the rules and stuff like that. And certainly,
- 39:43Speaker 3: I think you're within your rights to say, that's garbage,
- 39:45Speaker 3: he shouldn't be able to do that and stuff like that.
- 39:47Speaker 3: And also, I think that the sport, there's a value
- 39:51Speaker 3: in having somebody that everybody can turn their eyes to
- 39:54Speaker 3: and be like, oh, that's the bad guy. There's no
- 39:56Speaker 3: two ways about it. He's the one who's trying to
- 39:58Speaker 3: skirt the rules. What's really interesting is that now you've
- 40:04Speaker 3: got basically every conference who is scrambling to come together
- 40:07Speaker 3: to debate. to pass rules they didn't think they needed
- 40:09Speaker 3: to pass, which is, yes, of course the Big 12
- 40:13Speaker 3: is going to pass a rule that NFL players can't
- 40:15Speaker 3: play college football. You would think that wouldn't be necessary,
- 40:19Speaker 3: but obviously these are the times that we live in.
- 40:22Speaker 3: What is going to be very interesting is when it
- 40:25Speaker 3: kind of comes down to the SEC, because look, LSU
- 40:30Speaker 3: is a member school and And also, those memberships are squishy.
- 40:34Speaker 3: And if LSU really wanted to play this down and
- 40:38Speaker 3: go all the way to the mat on it, then
- 40:41Speaker 3: they could probably cause a real big uproar and a
- 40:44Speaker 3: real big existential crisis within college football and how organizations operate.
- 40:49Speaker 3: It's fascinating. I understand why people are upset. I also
- 40:54Speaker 3: kind of understand why LSU is doing it because they're like, hey,
- 40:59Speaker 3: if you're going to call a foul, you got to
- 41:00Speaker 3: call the foul.
- 41:01Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 41:01Speaker 3: They're going to make them call the foul. And so
- 41:07Speaker 3: I understand it from that point of view.
- 41:09Speaker 2: I think you're right about the villain thing.
- 41:11Speaker 1: When I think about it in recent years, In college football,
- 41:17Speaker 1: most folks or many folks' villain was Nick Saban simply
- 41:19Speaker 1: because Alabama was winning all the time. And he was
- 41:22Speaker 1: such a hard ass and would come across like that.
- 41:25Speaker 1: Jim Harbaugh, I think, at Michigan, made for a good villain,
- 41:29Speaker 1: especially with NCAA issues swirling about the program as well.
- 41:33Speaker 1: So I think you're right. Maybe Kiffin's the next. The
- 41:36Speaker 1: one thing that Kiffin is lacking, though, is winning a
- 41:38Speaker 1: national title. That would really make him hated if it came.
- 41:41Speaker 3: Down to it. I mean, if you think about it,
- 41:44Speaker 3: like for a minute there, Cody Campbell was, and so
- 41:48Speaker 3: some people may still be, the villain and stuff like that.
- 41:51Speaker 3: And so, you know, look, if you're into drama, college
- 41:55Speaker 3: football has had no shortage of it, certainly. But to
- 41:57Speaker 3: have drama, you got to have white hats and black hats.
- 42:01Speaker 1: Greg Tepper's with us, editor-in-chief, Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Is there a villain among high school coaches in Texas?
- 42:08Speaker 1: I can't really think of one.
- 42:09Speaker 3: No, I just think that everything's regionally. You can go
- 42:13Speaker 3: and there'll be people who are like, oh man, this
- 42:15Speaker 3: guy in the big country, nobody likes him. I don't
- 42:19Speaker 3: think there's one guy that kind of draws the ire
- 42:22Speaker 3: just because, you know, it is so fractured from a statewide,
- 42:26Speaker 3: from a regional and from a classification perspective. It is me.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Well, and that's something you would embrace, right?
- 42:36Speaker 3: We need it. If I need to wear the black
- 42:38Speaker 3: hat to make Texas high school football even better, I
- 42:40Speaker 3: will fit me right now.
- 42:42Speaker 1: You wear the black hat and your partner on your telecast,
- 42:45Speaker 1: Matt Stepp, wears his hat backwards.
- 42:48Speaker 3: We'll get him a white backwards hat and it'll be great. Okay.
- 42:53Speaker 2: All right.
- 42:53Speaker 8: Okay.
- 42:54Speaker 1: So that's a good transition then from college football to
- 42:58Speaker 1: high school football. And we'll continue our conversation with Greg Tepper,
- 43:02Speaker 1: editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, coming up here
- 43:04Speaker 1: on 1300. Back here on a Texan Tuesday on 1300
- 43:11Speaker 1: The Zone. And we've been talking college football. But it's
- 43:17Speaker 1: time to shift our weekly conversation with Greg Tepper, the
- 43:21Speaker 1: editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, as we transition
- 43:25Speaker 1: into high school football and what a gigantic week this
- 43:28Speaker 1: first week is.
- 43:29Speaker 2: Let me give you a chance to pump up your game.
- 43:31Speaker 1: You've got the two games, the one that's coming up
- 43:34Speaker 1: Thursday night from kind of the recruiting eyeball perspective, and
- 43:37Speaker 1: then your game on Friday.
- 43:40Speaker 3: Yeah, we got the Dave Campbell's Rising Game of the
- 43:41Speaker 3: Week on Thursday on our platform and on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter,
- 43:45Speaker 3: et cetera. That is Cy Ranch and Fort Penn Hightower,
- 43:47Speaker 3: a ton of big-time prospects in that one. And then
- 43:50Speaker 3: Dave Campbell's Friday Night Football, our Friday Game of the
- 43:52Speaker 3: Week on the same platform, is going to be down
- 43:55Speaker 3: in Galveston County for Dickinson and Fort Penn Ridgepoint, the
- 43:58Speaker 3: top 15 matchup in 6A. Absolutely loaded with talent and
- 44:02Speaker 3: two very high, expectation ball clubs. You've got a three-year
- 44:06Speaker 3: starter in Lorenzo Aguirre, a quarterback spot for Dickinson. And
- 44:10Speaker 3: then I think Ridgepoint, the money matchup here is you've
- 44:14Speaker 3: got the Dickinson offense against this Ridgepoint defense, which is,
- 44:18Speaker 3: I mean, our recruiting guy, Greg Powers, says that this
- 44:21Speaker 3: is the most prospect-laden roster in Texas, which is saying something,
- 44:25Speaker 3: considering they signed nine players to letters of intent last year,
- 44:28Speaker 3: and they're still this loaded.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Wow.
- 44:30Speaker 2: Wow, that is something.
- 44:31Speaker 1: Okay, so with that in mind, then, Um, the, the, uh,
- 44:37Speaker 1: one thing that I wanted to ask you about, and
- 44:39Speaker 1: this kind of dovetails and kind of folds into our six,
- 44:42Speaker 1: a preview as well is the fact this morning I was, uh,
- 44:46Speaker 1: on a zoom, uh, with Kenny Harrison, the head coach
- 44:49Speaker 1: at summer Creek, and they went 12 and two a
- 44:51Speaker 1: year ago, and they've had double digit wins of these
- 44:53Speaker 1: past years. three seasons. They were in the state title
- 44:56Speaker 1: game a couple of years ago. They are ranked number
- 45:00Speaker 1: five in your first Dave Campbell slash AP weekly Texas
- 45:05Speaker 1: high school football rankings in class 6A. At number 22
- 45:10Speaker 1: is Shadow Creek, their opponent. But we were making note
- 45:14Speaker 1: of the fact that if you look at your top 10,
- 45:16Speaker 1: where you've got Waxhatchee, number one. Galena Park, North Shore,
- 45:21Speaker 1: number two. CE King of Houston, third. North Crowley, fourth.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Summer Creek, five. And Duncanville, six. All six teams are
- 45:31Speaker 1: from two districts, total.
- 45:32Speaker 2: Either 11-6A or 17-6A.
- 45:36Speaker 1: It's Kenny Harrison's contention that with the numbers two, three,
- 45:42Speaker 1: and five ranked teams in the state in North Shore, C.E. King,
- 45:47Speaker 1: and Summer Creek, all in 17-6A, he believes they have
- 45:50Speaker 1: the toughest district in the state.
- 45:52Speaker 2: And our joke to him was that, well..
- 45:55Speaker 1: You got Waxahachie at one, North Crowley at four, and
- 45:58Speaker 1: Duncanville at six, and they say hold my beer because
- 46:02Speaker 1: that's three also from the same.
- 46:04Speaker 2: That's amazing to.
- 46:05Speaker 1: Think about that two districts comprise the top six teams
- 46:09Speaker 1: in the state of Texas.
- 46:12Speaker 3: And by the way, you're not counting Atascita in District
- 46:16Speaker 3: 1768 as well, which is a program that, yes, they
- 46:19Speaker 3: had a down year last year, but is consistently one
- 46:23Speaker 3: of the very best programs in Houston. You add in Kingwood,
- 46:26Speaker 3: who is a rising power there, I think made a
- 46:28Speaker 3: regional final a couple of years ago. This is an
- 46:31Speaker 3: absolutely loaded district. But you're right, both those districts The
- 46:35Speaker 3: clear power nexuses in 6A are in the southern part
- 46:41Speaker 3: of DFW and the east part of Houston.
- 46:43Speaker 8: That's it.
- 46:43Speaker 3: That's where they come in, and they figure to be
- 46:46Speaker 3: really good again this year. The thing that I think
- 46:50Speaker 3: is going to be really interesting about watching these two teams,
- 46:53Speaker 3: because you're going to get, obviously, these showcase matchups when
- 46:56Speaker 3: Duncanville plays Waxahachie and when North Shore plays CE King
- 47:00Speaker 3: and stuff like that. The jockeying for position as far
- 47:04Speaker 3: as district finishes are concerned is going to be absolutely
- 47:08Speaker 3: fascinating as well. Because look, if you are walks hatching,
- 47:12Speaker 3: you want to finish as high as possible because you
- 47:15Speaker 3: want to make sure you get the best possible draw
- 47:18Speaker 3: whenever you go to presumably the D1 bracket. Because You
- 47:23Speaker 3: don't necessarily want to be seeing some of the teams
- 47:25Speaker 3: that you may have to see there until you have
- 47:27Speaker 3: to see them. Same thing goes for North Shore, where
- 47:30Speaker 3: North Shore, CE King, and all of them, you need
- 47:32Speaker 3: to make sure that you finish as high as possible.
- 47:34Speaker 3: So there's a ton at stake, and I think for
- 47:36Speaker 3: Kenny Harrison, this first matchup with Shadow Creek is the
- 47:40Speaker 3: type of team that they will need to beat in
- 47:42Speaker 3: order to win the district and ultimately get first-round playoff
- 47:48Speaker 3: game at home, and get set up in the best
- 47:51Speaker 3: possible light. So I think you're exactly right. These are
- 47:54Speaker 3: the power nexuses of Texas high school football on 6A.
- 47:57Speaker 3: And once we get to week seven, week eight, we're
- 48:01Speaker 3: going to start to sort those out. The fun thing
- 48:03Speaker 3: is going to be kind of getting these first data
- 48:06Speaker 3: points here in a couple of weeks to see where
- 48:07Speaker 3: these teams may stand.
- 48:09Speaker 1: And more is the point, most of those teams, the
- 48:13Speaker 1: vast majority of those teams that we mentioned, not all,
- 48:16Speaker 1: but the majority of them are probably going to wind
- 48:18Speaker 1: up in Division I. So with that in mind, does
- 48:22Speaker 1: it make D2 more wide open, the combination of that,
- 48:25Speaker 1: plus DeSoto is down in 5A now?
- 48:28Speaker 3: Mm-hmm. Yeah, I think to a certain extent it does.
- 48:32Speaker 3: Excuse me. Although you've got CE King that's going to
- 48:36Speaker 3: go to Division II, right? And CE King was a
- 48:37Speaker 3: team that played for a state championship a year ago
- 48:40Speaker 3: and kind of burst onto the scene. You've got a
- 48:43Speaker 3: fair number of teams that are going to go to
- 48:44Speaker 3: Division II. Katie can go to Division II, right? You know,
- 48:48Speaker 3: what happens... If you get some of these other teams,
- 48:50Speaker 3: like Dripping Springs going to Division II. I mean, Westlake
- 48:53Speaker 3: right now, we project to go to Division II bracket.
- 48:55Speaker 3: So it's not like there's an easy path here. Nowhere
- 48:58Speaker 3: can that be the same. Southlake Carroll, Aledo, who's now
- 49:02Speaker 3: about to make the most anticipated 6A debut in state history,
- 49:06Speaker 3: is going to Division II. So I don't think there's...
- 49:10Speaker 3: It used to be, to your point, a couple of
- 49:13Speaker 3: alignments ago where you were desperate to get in the
- 49:16Speaker 3: Division II bracket. Because the Division II bracket was... I
- 49:20Speaker 3: don't mean to be belittling, but it was the junior circuit. Like,
- 49:23Speaker 3: everyone loaded in the D1 bracket, and it was absolutely crazy.
- 49:26Speaker 3: And then it was D2. It's like, kind of, who's left?
- 49:28Speaker 8: It is not.
- 49:29Speaker 3: I think that enrollments have shifted in such a way,
- 49:31Speaker 3: and the power dynamics in some of these programs have
- 49:33Speaker 3: shifted in such a way that you would say that, no,
- 49:37Speaker 3: it's not necessarily that way anymore. I mean, heck, you
- 49:40Speaker 3: take a look even at District 11-6A. You know, we've
- 49:42Speaker 3: got Waxahachie, the number one team in the state, going
- 49:45Speaker 3: to Division II. We've got North Crowley going to Division II. Like,
- 49:49Speaker 3: this is... Or North Crowley, rather, going to Division II.
- 49:51Speaker 3: That's the team that won the D1 state championship a
- 49:53Speaker 3: couple of years ago. But because they're now in this
- 49:55Speaker 3: new district, the alignments or the enrollments line up that
- 49:59Speaker 3: they're going to have to go... They're going to be
- 50:02Speaker 3: one of the powers of the teams to beat in
- 50:04Speaker 3: that bracket.
- 50:05Speaker 2: Okay.
- 50:06Speaker 3: Now..
- 50:07Speaker 1: Greg Tepper's with us, and we always call it the
- 50:11Speaker 1: meanest thing we do to each other each week when
- 50:13Speaker 1: we mention three games, give you a choice of three games,
- 50:17Speaker 1: and you have to pick one game to transport to.
- 50:20Speaker 1: And if each of us are doing a game, we
- 50:23Speaker 1: don't include that game. So for Tepp, that would be
- 50:25Speaker 1: the Dickinson-Richpoint game. it's a gentleman's game. We're not going to, yeah.
- 50:29Speaker 3: Like it's mutually assured destruction here. We have to, we
- 50:33Speaker 3: have to agree to some ground rules of the meanest
- 50:35Speaker 3: thing we do to each other. Same thing with me.
- 50:37Speaker 1: I can't transport to, uh, summer Creek and shadow Creek
- 50:40Speaker 1: since I'll be calling it anyway. So, but if we
- 50:42Speaker 1: did that, however, I want to go one gentleman step further, uh, because,
- 50:47Speaker 1: and I want your take on this. Uh, when I
- 50:49Speaker 1: was doing research on this last night, I went and
- 50:51Speaker 1: I did, I did some counting and then I added
- 50:53Speaker 1: in the state rankings this morning with the poll and everything.
- 50:55Speaker 2: Uh, And I have counted.
- 51:00Speaker 1: From 6A down to 1A six-man, 15, 15 head-to-head matchups
- 51:09Speaker 1: of ranked teams. Now, some of them are, to use
- 51:11Speaker 1: your phrase, punching up a class. In Newton's case, punching
- 51:15Speaker 1: up two classes this week with what they're going to
- 51:17Speaker 1: do facing West Orange Stark. But they're all ranked in
- 51:22Speaker 1: one of the polls, in one of the divisions, in
- 51:24Speaker 1: one of the polls. Tip, I've never seen 15 such
- 51:29Speaker 1: head-to-head matchups on week one. A, have you? And B,
- 51:35Speaker 1: how much does realignment have to do with this since
- 51:38Speaker 1: you have a school like Aledo going up and Minnesota
- 51:40Speaker 1: going down? You know, other schools going up or going down.
- 51:44Speaker 1: How much might that have.
- 51:45Speaker 2: To do with it?
- 51:46Speaker 1: I don't think you can lay all the quote-unquote blame
- 51:48Speaker 1: at the foot of that. And coaches really like these matchups.
- 51:51Speaker 1: You ever seen anything like this for week one?
- 51:54Speaker 3: This is one of the most loaded week ones I
- 51:55Speaker 3: think we've ever seen, plain and simple. And that's a
- 51:57Speaker 3: good way to illustrate it, is just like how many
- 52:00Speaker 3: just good-on-good matchups, like state-ranked matchups we have. And you're right,
- 52:05Speaker 3: there are some instances in which you've got teams punching
- 52:08Speaker 3: up a couple divisions, right? I mean, I think you've got,
- 52:12Speaker 3: you know, Bremond is opening the season, a 2A Division
- 52:16Speaker 3: II team. They're opening against Hamilton, who is moving up
- 52:18Speaker 3: to 3A Division II. So they're punching up two divisions.
- 52:21Speaker 3: That's a perfect example of a game that I think
- 52:24Speaker 3: actually may not qualify because I don't know if Hamilton
- 52:26Speaker 3: starts the year right.
- 52:27Speaker 1: Right I was gonna say that one doesn't even fall
- 52:29Speaker 1: into the category only because Hamilton are defending a team
- 52:32Speaker 1: that won a title last year in 2A before moving
- 52:35Speaker 1: up to 3A isn't even ranked but that's a that's a.
- 52:38Speaker 3: Great matchup Yeah, I think they're like 13th or something
- 52:41Speaker 3: like that.
- 52:41Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 52:42Speaker 3: And so to your point, you're exactly right. I think
- 52:44Speaker 3: it's twofold. One, realignment is part of it, that you're scrambling,
- 52:48Speaker 3: you're putting together new schedules, you're trying to find teams
- 52:51Speaker 3: that are willing to pay. And in the example of
- 52:54Speaker 3: one of the games that we may talk about, South
- 52:56Speaker 3: Oak Cliff and Randall, they had every reason to not
- 52:58Speaker 3: play each other last year because they might see each
- 53:01Speaker 3: other in a state championship game and did. This year,
- 53:03Speaker 3: they can't because Randall moving up to 581. So that's
- 53:06Speaker 3: part of it. I think the other part of it
- 53:09Speaker 3: is that I think we have, even over the course
- 53:12Speaker 3: of my time here at Dave Campbell's, I think we
- 53:14Speaker 3: have removed for coaches the stigma of taking a non-district loss.
- 53:18Speaker 3: I think that we have seen enough programs that have
- 53:22Speaker 3: gone and been beat in week one, week two, or
- 53:24Speaker 3: week three, and still go on and get everything they need.
- 53:28Speaker 3: I think the word is out that there is more
- 53:30Speaker 3: benefit than harm to scheduling a tough non-district schedule. And
- 53:34Speaker 3: so these coaches are more willing to put themselves out
- 53:37Speaker 3: there saying, yeah, we might start 0-1. But we know
- 53:40Speaker 3: we're going to get tested. We know we're going to
- 53:42Speaker 3: get out of it. And I think a lot of
- 53:44Speaker 3: these instances are a situation where they're like, hey, yeah,
- 53:47Speaker 3: it may not look great for us in week one.
- 53:49Speaker 3: We may have an ugly record, but it's going to
- 53:51Speaker 3: benefit us on December 7th when we're playing in a
- 53:54Speaker 3: regional final.
- 53:55Speaker 2: And that's what we're actually plotting for.
- 53:57Speaker 1: Yeah, remember when DeSoto was at last year, played the
- 54:00Speaker 1: school for Maryland and got their brains beat out and
- 54:02Speaker 1: then turned around and just blew everybody else away once
- 54:04Speaker 1: they got back?
- 54:05Speaker 2: I mean, I see it as a benefit, really.
- 54:08Speaker 3: DeSoto started 0-2. DeSoto started 0-2, and I remember having
- 54:11Speaker 3: a conversation, maybe even on this program, about how they
- 54:13Speaker 3: got beat by, like, 50 by a team by Georgia,
- 54:16Speaker 3: and everyone's, you know, throwing, you know, sounding alarm bells,
- 54:21Speaker 3: and then Claude Baz is like, don't worry about it,
- 54:23Speaker 3: we'll be fine, and sure enough, they go out there
- 54:25Speaker 3: and they run all the way to a dominant state championship. So, yeah,
- 54:29Speaker 3: I think that stigma has gone away, which I think
- 54:31Speaker 3: ultimately is good for consumers like us, because we get
- 54:34Speaker 3: good ballgames.
- 54:35Speaker 1: Okay, so here we go. I'm not going to give
- 54:38Speaker 1: you three games to choose from. I'm going to give
- 54:40Speaker 1: you 15, okay? And I'm just going to rattle them
- 54:43Speaker 1: off here. And you tell me, well, actually 14 because
- 54:48Speaker 1: your game doesn't count. So you've got 14 to choose
- 54:52Speaker 1: from here.
- 54:53Speaker 2: I'll tell you what.
- 54:54Speaker 1: I'll even throw a non-ranked one in there. I'll give
- 54:57Speaker 1: you the Kraut Bowl. Munster and Lindsey.
- 55:00Speaker 5: Oh, my God.
- 55:01Speaker 1: A rivalry game. Now, Munster may beat them pretty handily,
- 55:04Speaker 1: but it is a rivalry game. All right, just fold
- 55:07Speaker 1: that one into these.
- 55:08Speaker 2: Okay.
- 55:09Speaker 1: The game I have, Shadow Creek, like I said, number
- 55:12Speaker 1: 22 in 6A. Summer Creek is number five. You have
- 55:16Speaker 1: North Crowley, number four in 6A. 11.
- 55:20Speaker 2: In 6A.
- 55:21Speaker 1: You have Duncanville and Allen, 6D, 7 in 6A. You
- 55:25Speaker 1: have Atascocita, 11th. Katie is 14th. And College Park from
- 55:30Speaker 1: the Woodlands, number 17. Iowa Colony, the new kid on
- 55:33Speaker 1: the block in 10, 5A, D1, there as well, all right,
- 55:37Speaker 1: at number 10, all right? And then 5A, You have
- 55:41Speaker 1: Richmond Randall. We mentioned South Oak Cliff. Number four in D1,
- 55:44Speaker 1: Richmond Randall. Number one there in 5A-D2 in SOC. You have,
- 55:50Speaker 1: I love this matchup, ninth-ranked Port Arthur Memorial against Port
- 55:55Speaker 1: Natchez Groves. number three in 5AD2, so they punch up
- 55:59Speaker 1: one weight class. In 4A, you have the number two
- 56:03Speaker 1: team in the state in 4AD2, West Orange-Stark, against the
- 56:07Speaker 1: number one team in 3AD2, playing a team two divisions
- 56:12Speaker 1: ahead of them, Newton, but they usually seem armed for
- 56:15Speaker 1: the cause. You have number three in 4AD2, La Vega,
- 56:20Speaker 1: against Franklin, number four in 3AD1, You have Canyon West Plains,
- 56:25Speaker 1: number four in 4A-D1 against Wall, another team going up
- 56:30Speaker 1: two spots, number six in 3A-D1, a defending state champion.
- 56:35Speaker 1: In 3A, you have Tidehaven, number three in Division II
- 56:38Speaker 1: against Ganado, number one in 2A-D1. Then you have Malakoff,
- 56:44Speaker 1: number nine in 3A-D1, and they're playing Edgewood, number 10
- 56:50Speaker 1: in 3A-D2. You have Canadian, number six in D2, against Panhandle,
- 56:56Speaker 1: number nine in 2A-D1, and maybe I saved the best
- 56:59Speaker 1: for last. Klondike, number nine in 1A-D1, six-man, against Strawn,
- 57:04Speaker 1: number five in D2, six-man.
- 57:06Speaker 2: What do you think about them apples?
- 57:08Speaker 3: This is a new level of diabolical even for you.
- 57:12Speaker 8: Even for you.
- 57:13Speaker 3: Of just like laying all these out there and being like,
- 57:15Speaker 3: all right, pass up 14 of them.
- 57:18Speaker 8: Okay.
- 57:21Speaker 3: Like it's a loaded week. It's a crazy week of games.
- 57:26Speaker 3: I think the answer is, oh, man. Like, it is
- 57:32Speaker 3: absolutely easy to select South Oak Cliff and Randall. And
- 57:35Speaker 3: I think you're well within your rights to do it.
- 57:37Speaker 3: It's a rematch of the last two 580 Tuesday championship games.
- 57:40Speaker 3: You know, new look South Oak Cliff, you know, going
- 57:44Speaker 3: up against Landon Williams, Callis, and kind of a Randall
- 57:47Speaker 3: team that we've got some questions about moving up to 581.
- 57:48Speaker 3: I think the answer, though, is Allen and Duncanville, which
- 57:55Speaker 3: is a spectacular ballgame. One of the things that I
- 57:59Speaker 3: think is really fascinating about Texas high school football, I
- 58:01Speaker 3: know we've talked about it a lot. It has a
- 58:04Speaker 3: way of rhyming. History has a way of rhyming. Go
- 58:06Speaker 3: back to 2018. That is when Duncanville knocked off Allen
- 58:12Speaker 3: at AT & T Stadium to much hullabaloo. Jaquan and
- 58:14Speaker 3: Jackson led them to a state championship. And that really
- 58:17Speaker 3: served as their announcement of their arrival as the new
- 58:22Speaker 3: DFW team of record. And sure enough, six title games
- 58:26Speaker 3: in the next eight years, right? Right now, and they
- 58:31Speaker 3: took that torch from Alan. Alan is on the Ascendancy.
- 58:35Speaker 3: If you don't know... Allen's back and they are going
- 58:41Speaker 3: to be really, really good for the next three years. Really,
- 58:44Speaker 3: really good. The sophomore class is very special. I think
- 58:47Speaker 3: they're going to start nine sophomores on Friday. That's the
- 58:49Speaker 3: one thing that gives me some concern. We have some
- 58:51Speaker 3: questions about Duncanville, specifically a quarterback. Is Max Denson going
- 58:55Speaker 3: to be the quarterback? But we know they got Trent Yancey.
- 58:57Speaker 3: We also have some questions, I think, about like, are
- 58:59Speaker 3: they going to have those big ward hatties up front
- 59:01Speaker 3: defensively that they've always seemed to have? That's one question
- 59:04Speaker 3: that we have. This is a, and furthermore, I think
- 59:07Speaker 3: for Allen, they can, it's a non-district week one game.
- 59:11Speaker 3: I want to be clear, but I think they can
- 59:13Speaker 3: at least announce their intent to, to, to what they're
- 59:17Speaker 3: thrown back. And I think it's dripping with intrigue. Two
- 59:21Speaker 3: great coaches in Lee Wigginton and Reginald Samples. A huge
- 59:24Speaker 3: stadium there now. It's everything that's big about high school football.
- 59:27Speaker 3: And so I think that is probably the choice in
- 59:31Speaker 3: week one.
- 59:31Speaker 2: Although, again, like, I mean... Any of 14.
- 59:36Speaker 3: La Vega Franklin is going to be so good. I know.
- 59:39Speaker 8: It's going to be so good.
- 59:41Speaker 3: That might be like the 12th best game of the week.
- 59:44Speaker 1: And I love the Golden Triangle matchup. I love Port
- 59:47Speaker 1: Arlington Memorial PNG. I think that's going to be something.
- 59:52Speaker 3: There are so many just absolutely insane games this week.
- 59:57Speaker 3: I'll give you one in your neck of the woods.
- 59:59Speaker 3: They're in the Austin area. And it is, by Austin standards,
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: a relatively lighter week. Although, Vandergrift going to Brennan is
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: a really interesting matchup from across the league in terms
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: of how much has San Antonio closed that gap. If
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: you want to be entertained, if you want the most
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: for your entertainment dollar, go to Huddo on Friday night.
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: and watch Hutto and Harker Heights in what we've called
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: the cut-the-breaks game of the week. It will not end 21-14.
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: That is a promise. That game will be pointy. It
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: is the debut of Casey Walraven, the new head coach
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: at Hutto, who was at the controls of the highest-scoring
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: offense in Texas high school football last year at Alvarado.
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: Harker Heights brings back Hudson Humble, their quarterback. It is
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: going to be electric, Mary and Hutto. So from an
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: entertainment perspective, that's your move.
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: He's Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: He joins us each week for our Tuesdays with Tepper segment. So,
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: enjoy week one, right?
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: Man, I will.
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: By the way, I should let you know, because I
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: think we are going to be in Dickinson, which is
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: in Galveston County, kind of southeast of Houston. We're staying
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: the night, but in order to kind of beat traffic,
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: we're going to do a drive. We're going to stay
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: at the Conroe. Okay.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: Okay. That makes sense.
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: On Friday night after the game, you may get a
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: picture of a trip to House of Pies on Friday night.
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: I'm getting you a little bit of warning. You are
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: diabolical to me. That's the only way I can return
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: the favor. That's as close as I can do to
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: hitting your heart.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: I tortured you enough doing that, so it's fair.
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: I understand. Thanks, Teb. Hey, enjoy the week.
- 1:01:47Speaker 8: Absolutely.
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: That's Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief, Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. More
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: coming up on 13 Under the Zone. Third and final
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM 13.
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: Under the Zone. Craig Way alongside the producer, Jay Kerman.
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: Glad you're with us.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: We've talked a lot, a lot of football, and we're
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: going to talk a lot more this hour. Not just
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: You know, obviously, we'll hear more from Steve Sarkeesian about
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: getting his team ready for the season. But, yeah, more
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: of this jurisprudence or the specter of jurisprudence with regard
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: to eligibility for college football athletes. Thanks again to Greg Tepper,
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: the editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, joining us
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: in the 3 o'clock hour to talk both college football
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: and high school football.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: We do it every Tuesday.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: It's our Tuesdays with TEP feature coming in the 3
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: o'clock hours when we bring it to you. Okay, we're
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: going to roll back to this deal with LSU, with
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: Ole Miss, with Daquan Wright, and with this other weird,
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: bizarre story that just happened to come out right around
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: the same time with the executive director of Ole Miss'
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: NIL Collective. His name is Walker Jones, who founded the
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: Grove Collective, told a podcast about the Assorted Crackers podcast,
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: that the FBI searched the Rebels football office for recording
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: devices after former coach Lane Kiffin left for LSU. He
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: told the podcast that the FBI searched for bugs in
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: the football offices at the Manning Center once Kiffin bolted
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: for LSU after guiding them to the 11-1 record in
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: the regular season.
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: Check the yoga mat.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: Here's what Jones said.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: Jones said, we actually had the FBI come through and
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: walk the building for bugs and for everything.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: We knew kind of what was in Baton Rouge. We
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: knew how they operated there.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: I remember getting on my knees and looking under the desk,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: like checking for some sort of bug. Is this a
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: Grisham novel? And he was asking, well, why were you
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: looking under your desk? And he said, trust me, you
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: don't know this guy like I do. So that was
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: his comment. Now, Pete Golding, of course, was the defensive
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: coordinator who was promoted to head coach on the same
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: day that Kiffin left for LSU. And he's getting ready
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: to start his first full season there in Oxford as
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: the head coach. And he was asked, What about all
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: this thing about the FBI and the bugging of the
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: offices and all that kind of thing?
- 1:04:31Speaker 7: I think any bowl game playoff system, obviously, you're going
- 1:04:34Speaker 7: to up security. I'm not sure that there was a
- 1:04:37Speaker 7: hiring process of here we go with the FBI.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: I do think we probably have a.
- 1:04:42Speaker 7: A current player whose dad just so happens to work
- 1:04:45Speaker 7: for the FBI that lives in town, that from that standpoint,
- 1:04:49Speaker 7: there was no measure to go, oh, my gosh, here,
- 1:04:51Speaker 7: come in from that standpoint. But, no, obviously, any time
- 1:04:54Speaker 7: you get in that playoff system and you had guys
- 1:04:56Speaker 7: from this building go to other places, you want to
- 1:04:58Speaker 7: make sure it's secure for your players. Nothing from our standpoint,
- 1:05:01Speaker 7: but the video access and everything else and all those
- 1:05:05Speaker 7: things that you're doing regardless where you're at. I mean,
- 1:05:07Speaker 7: that's no different when, you know, the semis and the quarters,
- 1:05:10Speaker 7: regardless where you're at, for the hotels that you're staying in.
- 1:05:12Speaker 7: You've got to up the security. People are in and
- 1:05:14Speaker 7: out and you're sweeping trash cans. I mean, that's been
- 1:05:16Speaker 7: done for the history of ball. So, no, there was
- 1:05:18Speaker 7: no hiring process of, hey, let's get the FBI in here.
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: Holy cow. They started looking around. No, it wasn't anything
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: like that.
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: So that's drama enough, you know, without this huge issue.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: What's going to happen with Daquan Wright? Lane Kiffin was
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: on with Pat McAfee on ESPN. And he was talking
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: about the roles that are ascribed to people in all
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: of this and how he has been– it's interesting that
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: when we had Greg Tepper on earlier, Tepper said college
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: football needs villains and maybe Lane Kiffin can be that villain.
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: He was just ruminating on that. Well, Kiffin already realizes
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: that might be the case.
- 1:06:05Speaker 6: I think as you talk about villains, sometimes the difference
- 1:06:08Speaker 6: between the hero and the villain isn't very far apart,
- 1:06:10Speaker 6: and it changes very often. I see your wrestling stuff there.
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: So you referred to Hulk Hogan before.
- 1:06:16Speaker 5: Hell yeah, brother.
- 1:06:16Speaker 6: He's a villain, then a hero, then a villain, then
- 1:06:18Speaker 6: a hero again, and then a villain.
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: So, you know, it happens sometimes.
- 1:06:23Speaker 6: And, you know, when you're trying to do things at
- 1:06:25Speaker 6: the highest level, a lot of times people want you
- 1:06:28Speaker 6: to apologize for what you're doing when you're chasing greatness.
- 1:06:30Speaker 6: And that's what we do here as a program. That's
- 1:06:32Speaker 6: how we run it. And our players know that. And
- 1:06:35Speaker 6: I think our fans and administration, wherever.
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: They've been, they love it when you're there.
- 1:06:40Speaker 6: And so they understand that you're doing the best for
- 1:06:42Speaker 6: their program at the time so that they can win
- 1:06:44Speaker 6: and they can have everything that they want and they're
- 1:06:46Speaker 6: wanting to have on Saturdays.
- 1:06:48Speaker 8: Okay.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: You know, Kiffin, of course, ended up taking several Ole
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: Miss assistants with him to LSU, including the offensive coordinator,
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: Charlie Weiss Jr., the co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: Joe Cox, the receivers coach, George McDonald, the running backs coach,
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: Kevin Smith, and the general manager, Billy Glasscock. And Kiffin
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: allowed Weiss, McDonald, Cox, assistant receivers coach Dane Stevens, and
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: slot receivers coach Sawyer Jordan to return to Ole Miss
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: to coach in the college football playoff. So this is
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: where it kind of gets murkier. And of course, Ole
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: Miss beat Tulane 41-10 at home in Oxford in the playoff.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: Then they upset number three Georgia in the quarterfinal in
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: the All-State Sugar Bowl, but then lost barely to Miami there. uh,
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: and 31, 27 in the semifinal and the Fiesta bowl. So, uh, it's,
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: it's just a bizarre thing where, uh, you know, and
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: you heard Pete Golding talking about as well. Jones, by
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: the way, the NIL guy said he had to work
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: hard to keep the Tigers from poaching some of the rebels,
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: best players, because for Ole Miss players transferred to LSU
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: defensive end, uh, Prince, well, you may, uh, you may,
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: I'm a Malayan who's from Manor, uh.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: Uh, It's Umam Mielen.
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: I think it's Umam Mielen.
- 1:08:09Speaker 8: Yes.
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: Umam Mielen. I started saying U. It's Umam Mielen. He's
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: from Manor. Linebacker, T.J.
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: Dottery.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: Receiver, Winston Watkins Jr. And offensive tackle, Devin Harper.
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: Apparently, Watkins Jr. has had a great camp for them. Yeah.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: And the Tigers also wanted Trinidad Chambliss, the quarterback, and
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: Kiwan Lacy, the running back.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: That didn't happen.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: Jones said, I spent several nights sleeping at the Manning
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: Center and worked 24-7 to keep our roster and to
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: keep the program going. Jones, by the way, is a
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: former Ole Miss linebacker in the late 90s. And what
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: people don't realize, too, is half the staff was going
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: to LSU. So we literally had to have two different
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: text threads, two different staff meetings. We had to ask
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: coaches to leave the room. No hall room conversations. Nothing
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: written down. nothing written on the grease boards in the
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: office because half the staff was literally we were going
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: to be competing against you i don't blame him.
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: Uh with that this should have been a documentary.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: September 19th yeah at LSU at Ole Miss.
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: That might not be the documentary I'm looking for, but
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: it's going to be a movie, as they would say.
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I was talking about the game itself.
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: So there's that. Okay.
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: So all of this hullabaloo surrounding, you know, the Lane
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: Kiffin departure and taking several assistants with him from Ole
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: Miss to LSU. Now you have Daquan Wright, you know,
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: intending to transfer to LSU, entering the portal After leaving
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: Ole Miss, trying his hand at the NFL, he did
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: not get into a game, but he was in uniform
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: on the sidelines in the second preseason game for the Browns.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: So he had signed as an undrafted free agent, did
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: not appear in a game. But I've read those statements earlier,
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: the SEC and the Big Ten said, Apparently very much
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: against it.
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: Looks like the ACC will go against it as well.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: For his own part, Lane Kiffin sought to say, when
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: he was on again on the Pat McAfee show on ESPN,
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: that it wasn't just an LSU project. There were several
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: other interested parties who were trying to get Daquan Wright
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: on their campus.
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: Yeah, so in there, a couple of things you brought up.
- 1:10:35Speaker 6: You know, that, that an injunction in Baton Rouge where
- 1:10:38Speaker 6: a court order was issued to allow these players, there's
- 1:10:41Speaker 6: court orders in South Carolina, Georgia, California, Kentucky, all over
- 1:10:45Speaker 6: the country, issuing the same thing for these kids. And
- 1:10:48Speaker 6: so we followed those as many coaches did. Like I said,
- 1:10:52Speaker 6: I told our staff, whoever the kid chooses, the first
- 1:10:56Speaker 6: kid chooses will be the poster child school, not the
- 1:10:58Speaker 6: first to recruit.
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: There's all kinds of schools that recruited them.
- 1:11:03Speaker 6: You know, Ask Drew Rosenhaus, his agent, how many schools
- 1:11:05Speaker 6: called and offered him a lot to come there, including
- 1:11:08Speaker 6: our conference and including his previous school.
- 1:11:11Speaker 8: But he chose us.
- 1:11:12Speaker 6: And so I said, hey, when he decided to choose us, I.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: Said, just get ready, guys. This is going to come.
- 1:11:17Speaker 6: This will be Lane Kiffin, LSU, you know, doing something
- 1:11:21Speaker 6: nobody else is doing. And there's a number of kids
- 1:11:25Speaker 6: that have committed to schools that have been in many camps,
- 1:11:28Speaker 6: been in different camps, been cut, this guy just happened
- 1:11:32Speaker 6: to be the poster child of one that was just
- 1:11:34Speaker 6: getting cut at the time.
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: So, yeah, he was definitely going to be the poster
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: child on that. And LSU was going to be the
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: poster program on that, about signing him, whether you want
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: to call him villain or bad guys or whatever. And
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: I'm sure that Lane Kiffin is telling the truth, that
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: there were probably multiple schools that were interested.
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: That doesn't matter.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: They're the ones who signed him. or they're the ones
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: who are trying to get him after he had signed
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: with Cleveland and did not make the roster. That's why
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: this is going to be really intriguing to see where
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: it goes from here, to see if this thing winds
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: up in a courtroom or if LSU lets it go
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: after being whatever, admonished by the SEC.
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: And even if they do, does Daquan Wright then try
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: to get it? another injunction and get back in the
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: courtroom in order to be eligible to play. So, and
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: that's why we heard Sark talking about this thing, how
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: difficult this would be to manage, especially at this point,
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: getting ready to start the season. Speaking of Sark, we're
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: going to hear more from him just talking about his
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: own football team. That's up next when we continue on
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 13 under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:12:53Speaker 5: There's one thing that we both agree I like you
- 1:12:59Speaker 5: and baby you like me Let's take our love one
- 1:13:05Speaker 5: night at a time All night, love all night Practice
- 1:13:15Speaker 5: makes perfect Gonna get it right, gonna get it right
- 1:13:21Speaker 5: One night at.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: A time Well, here in the 4 o'clock hour, it's
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: only right and probable you should hear from the King,
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: George Strait.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: One night at a time.
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: Another one of those 50 number ones.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: Plenty of those.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: Just a truckload of those from the King.
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: College football.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: I'm going to get to a list here in a
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: few minutes, but I do want to hear more from
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian. We'll start it off with
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: him saying, talking about the evaluation process that continues.
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: And you have to do it kind of on the fly.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: You're evaluating while his guys are grinding through the heat
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: of these workouts, even when they work out in the
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: morning or even in the evening. It's still hot. It's
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: still in the 90s. In fact, it doesn't dip below 100.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: I noticed last night it dipped below 100 at 730.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: Something like that last night.
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: It was also on the milder side this morning, though,
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: when I went outside.
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: It was. It was.
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: We'll take that.
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: Yep.
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: Now it's back to being hot again.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: But so these guys are grinding. And we heard Sark
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: yesterday talk about, you know, a lot of the things
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: that are important for them to do to deal with
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: the heat and that sort of thing. But in the meantime,
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: he's also still trying to evaluate players while all of
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: them are grinding.
- 1:14:46Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, I will say this. We've been practicing
- 1:14:48Speaker 8: really hard, Cedric. Like, it's been physical. It's been tough.
- 1:14:56Speaker 8: These guys like to practice. And so you can get
- 1:14:59Speaker 8: a real sense and a feel of real speed, what
- 1:15:01Speaker 8: real speed looks like, because we're practicing fast. We're practicing hard.
- 1:15:04Speaker 8: We're practicing physical. And when you don't right now, you
- 1:15:10Speaker 8: stand out. You know, it used to be the other
- 1:15:12Speaker 8: way around here when we first got started. You know,
- 1:15:14Speaker 8: when DeMarvion Overshawn or Roshon Johnson practiced really hard, they
- 1:15:18Speaker 8: stood out because maybe not everybody else was. Now, everybody
- 1:15:22Speaker 8: else goes really hard, and so when you're not, you
- 1:15:24Speaker 8: stand out the other way. And so it's easy to fix.
- 1:15:27Speaker 8: It's easy to rectify. But I don't know necessarily that
- 1:15:31Speaker 8: it's difficult to evaluate because of just the way these
- 1:15:35Speaker 8: guys work and practice.
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: As he continues to get his guys ready, obviously he
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: has his quarterback ready to go in Arch Manning. And
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: all of the starting quarterbacks now have been announced around
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: this Southeastern Conference. And it ranges from veterans like a
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: Trinidad Chambliss, like an Arch Manning, guys like that, to
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: guys who come through the portal. Sam Levitt going to
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: LSU to be the starting quarterback there. Gunnar Stockton, a
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: veteran at Georgia. to the youngest of the young. And, uh,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: that includes, uh, uh, Keelan Russell, the quarterback for Alabama and, uh, being, uh,
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: you know, jumping into that spot as a freshman. And, uh, also, uh,
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: the freshman who is taking over at Tennessee. And that
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: was one thing that we were discussing with Mike Keith
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: when he was on with us, the voice of the
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: Tennessee Volunteers, as to it was going to be a
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: battle that would go all the way down to the
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: wire before ultimately the starter would be named. And it
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: winds up being Faison Brandon, the freshman. So there's really
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: the yin to the yang. There's the veterans and there's
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: the youngsters as well. And Sark was asked, uh, how
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: helpful is it to have Arch Manning going into year.
- 1:16:57Speaker 8: Two as the starter? Uh, I mean, it's always helpful. Um,
- 1:17:01Speaker 8: you know, every year is different, you know, I mean,
- 1:17:03Speaker 8: I think we would all love to have a returner
- 1:17:05Speaker 8: back who is a really good player and a really
- 1:17:07Speaker 8: good leader and all those things that don't work like that,
- 1:17:11Speaker 8: you know? And so, you know, you, you have to
- 1:17:13Speaker 8: navigate your off season, navigate your training camp to figure
- 1:17:16Speaker 8: those things out.
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: As you go.
- 1:17:18Speaker 8: Um, You know, there's the old adage, you know, if
- 1:17:22Speaker 8: you think you have two quarterbacks, you probably don't have one.
- 1:17:25Speaker 8: So it always feels good when you get to name
- 1:17:26Speaker 8: a starter at some point. So I'm sure it feels
- 1:17:29Speaker 8: good for those schools. I'm not really sure who you're
- 1:17:31Speaker 8: referring to, but I bet it feels good to actually
- 1:17:33Speaker 8: name it and to have a guy that they know.
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: As their starter.
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: Well, I just went right down the list. Somebody else
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: had asked him about that. But the point that I
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: was pointing out is the contrast of veterans and youngsters.
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: That sort of thing.
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: There's been some rule changes as well, what with now
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: targeting not costing a player the first half of the
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: next game if he is, you know, flagged for targeting
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: in the second half of a game. That's one of
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: the rules changes. They've had some other ones as well,
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: and Sark was asked about these rule changes, and is
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: this particular era of college football more difficult than those
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: of the past to coach?
- 1:18:11Speaker 8: It's pretty tough, you know. It's enjoyable at the same time. Like,
- 1:18:15Speaker 8: Tough doesn't mean you don't like it, but it is.
- 1:18:18Speaker 8: It's challenging. We have a budget to pay our players.
- 1:18:23Speaker 8: Just think of that through. That wasn't even going on
- 1:18:26Speaker 8: five years ago, and here we are. And managing that
- 1:18:30Speaker 8: and in transfer portal and can NFL players come back
- 1:18:33Speaker 8: and play college football and five for five, you can
- 1:18:35Speaker 8: play all your freshmen. There's a lot going on. But
- 1:18:39Speaker 8: in the end, it's enjoyable. Like I love the challenge
- 1:18:41Speaker 8: of it all. And I love trying to find a
- 1:18:43Speaker 8: way to find a competitive edge through all that. And
- 1:18:46Speaker 8: I've said this a lot. Just tell us what the
- 1:18:48Speaker 8: rules are. and we will play by them. The part
- 1:18:52Speaker 8: I don't like is the unknown. We're in an unknown
- 1:18:54Speaker 8: phase right now of this whole can they play, can
- 1:18:58Speaker 8: they not, can they transfer, can they not. That's uncomfortable
- 1:19:01Speaker 8: to me. That's not my realm of where I operate
- 1:19:03Speaker 8: my best. I like to know. Just tell me what
- 1:19:05Speaker 8: it is, and then we'll play by the rules.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: Next, Sark was asked about, and this gets into a
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: little bit of football, not necessarily coach speak, but in
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: the vernacular of coach definition of what they're trying to do.
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: For example, he's a play caller.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: And when they get into meetings, as it relates to Sark,
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: the play caller, what are they looking for in terms
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: of being able to best communicate utilize their weapons in
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: a specific call against a specific opponent who might give
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: them a specific look.
- 1:19:44Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, I think that's a lot of what
- 1:19:47Speaker 8: we do in the off season and in the summer.
- 1:19:50Speaker 8: And we like to refer to it as let's go fishing,
- 1:19:53Speaker 8: you know, and we'll go in the room and we
- 1:19:55Speaker 8: start studying other people. We start looking at different schemes.
- 1:19:58Speaker 8: We start looking at things that may fit with the
- 1:20:00Speaker 8: personnel that we think we might have. And then you
- 1:20:03Speaker 8: get into training camp and you start to dabble in
- 1:20:05Speaker 8: some of those things. Sometimes you dig back in your
- 1:20:07Speaker 8: own archives, things that you used to do in the
- 1:20:09Speaker 8: past that with the personnel or people that are similar
- 1:20:13Speaker 8: to what you have now, whether it was here at
- 1:20:15Speaker 8: different schools, and you start to put it all together.
- 1:20:18Speaker 8: And then the players ultimately tell you what we can
- 1:20:22Speaker 8: and can't do. That's what practice is for. That's what
- 1:20:25Speaker 8: retention of information is for. Can they handle the information
- 1:20:30Speaker 8: and the volume? And then you start to devise game
- 1:20:33Speaker 8: plans predicated on their strengths individually, our strengths, what we've
- 1:20:38Speaker 8: done well in practice, and then who our opponent is
- 1:20:42Speaker 8: and how we think we can attack them. And so,
- 1:20:43Speaker 8: you know, I think, again, I'm speaking on both sides
- 1:20:47Speaker 8: of my mouth. I think every year there's aspects of
- 1:20:50Speaker 8: it that are the same. We are who we are.
- 1:20:53Speaker 8: The foundation of our offense is the foundation of our offense.
- 1:20:56Speaker 8: But on the same token, there's a lot of what
- 1:20:58Speaker 8: we do that is different every year, trying to play
- 1:21:01Speaker 8: to the strengths of the people that we have.
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: And one more from Sark as well.
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: He was asked about the adjustments that they might have
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: to make in the running game. Now, remember, they're going
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: to use a lot of backs. When I was at
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: the scrimmage on Saturday, you saw several different backs get carries,
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: and that was by design. It also means by design
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: that there will be several different backs who get carries
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: in a game in a given situation against an opponent.
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: And so Sark was asked about this, about how is
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: he adjusted with what he wants to do with a
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: running game in terms of spreading out the carries based
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: on the opponent, based on the situation, and really based
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: on where they are in the game with, say, one
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: player who has carried it significantly more than another.
- 1:21:49Speaker 8: I think the length of the season has made me
- 1:21:51Speaker 8: think more about it. And that started two years ago
- 1:21:57Speaker 8: when we were in the Cotton Bowl. And just how
- 1:22:02Speaker 8: long that season was, I think that was game 16
- 1:22:07Speaker 8: for us, if I'm not mistaken, where in the past...
- 1:22:10Speaker 8: You're playing 12 games, 13 if you were good enough.
- 1:22:13Speaker 8: And now you're talking about 16, maybe 17 games. You've
- 1:22:17Speaker 8: got to manage these bodies, and you've got to manage
- 1:22:19Speaker 8: it now more than ever, even in our conference, because
- 1:22:22Speaker 8: of the physicality of the conference. And so the benefit
- 1:22:25Speaker 8: and the strategy behind what we did this offseason, knowing
- 1:22:28Speaker 8: we had Derek signed, and then to be able to
- 1:22:31Speaker 8: go get both Hollywood and Relique was not on accident.
- 1:22:34Speaker 8: It was very intentional of what we were trying to
- 1:22:38Speaker 8: do to putting a roster together that could go the distance,
- 1:22:42Speaker 8: you know, and that's, that's what we're.
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: Trying to do.
- 1:22:43Speaker 8: We're, we're trying to win every game and we're trying
- 1:22:45Speaker 8: to play 16 or 17 games depending on if you
- 1:22:48Speaker 8: get a buy or not. And we're trying to play
- 1:22:50Speaker 8: all the way into late January. And so, but to
- 1:22:53Speaker 8: do that, you got to have people that can play
- 1:22:54Speaker 8: off of one another and you got to have the
- 1:22:56Speaker 8: ability for guys that some games can, can, except 10
- 1:23:01Speaker 8: or 12 carries, maybe injuries occur. And the next week
- 1:23:04Speaker 8: I need them for 25 carries. And both those guys
- 1:23:06Speaker 8: have done that in their careers, whether it's at NC state,
- 1:23:09Speaker 8: Arizona state, they've shared the load and they've been the
- 1:23:12Speaker 8: guy in certain games where they've carried the load. And so, um,
- 1:23:15Speaker 8: I think we're going to need both of that this
- 1:23:17Speaker 8: season as, as it unfolds.
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: So there's, you know, plenty to discuss when it, when
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: it comes to preparing his team for the coming season. Uh,
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: when we get to this time of year, as I mentioned,
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: that it's a lot of fun in terms of the
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: preseason polls that come out. And, you know, when we
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: first started really ramping up into this a month ago,
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: we were in Tampa for the SEC football media days.
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: And that's when the preseason poll in the SEC came out.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: That's when several other players as well in preseason, all
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: conference and all American teams and things like that. Those
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: are always fun deals. And then they get into the
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: fall camp workout.
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: Sip of water here.
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: And they get into the fall camp workouts, but we're
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: not done with the preseason rankings. Obviously, the AP poll
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: has come out, Texas, number five in that one, number
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: four in the coaches poll. Then there's the rankings of
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: players in college football. Now, this really started from the
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: NFL perspective in the top 100. The NFL made a
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: real big deal about it because the players were voting
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: on it. And the top 100 players in the NFL,
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: NFL Network was identifying what they went, what several different
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: episodes where they go 100 to 90 and 89 to
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: 80 and 79 to 70 and all the way down
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: into the top 10 players in the National Football League. Now, again,
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: I think it's important in terms of the distinction that
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: I'm about to make here. In the NFL, it's the
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: players who are voting on that, the top 100 players.
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: It's the players who are voting for the Pro Bowl.
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: So you have those votes.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: What The Athletic does, and ESPN does it as well,
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: in fact, I've mentioned many times that between late-night reading
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: and then reading early the next morning, especially when we
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: get on into the football season.
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: I'm reading a lot of things. I'm reading a lot
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: of different.
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: Sources, the websites for ESPN, for The Athletic, for Sports Illustrated,
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: Pro Football Focus. There's several different ones that I examined. Well, today,
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: The Athletic came out with its top 100 players in
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: college football. Their top 100. Now, the important thing is
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: to distinguish.
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: Again, in the NFL... It's the players who are voting
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: on this.
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: For the Athletic ranking the top 100 players in college football,
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: the guys they're talking about who are doing the voting
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: are the writers, led by Sam Kahn, a guy I
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: know who's covered many years, has covered a lot of
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: college football in the state of Texas, worked for the
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: Houston Chronicle. But for the Athletic, Sam and the staff
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: there ranked the top 100 players.
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: So here's who they got.
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: I'm not going to run down all 100, obviously, but
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: I'll start down at the bottom. Number 100 is the
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: guy the Longhorns will see, Tennessee running back Deshaun Bishop.
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: Cade Olave, linebacker from BYU, number 99. LSU safety, Ty Benefield,
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: the Longhorns will see, is 98. And so it goes
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: on down from there. For example, Drew Bobo, the Georgia
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: Center anchor of their offensive front, is number six. Caleb Hawkins,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: the running back who was at North Texas as a
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: freshman last year, will be the starting running back for
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: Oklahoma State. He's number 95 on that. Kip Lewis, Oklahoma linebacker,
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: number 92. Melvin Ciani, the Longhorns' new starting right tackle,
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: the Wake Forest transfer, number 90 on the list.
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: Terrence Carter Jr.
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: The tight end for Texas Tech, is number 87 off
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: the list. Trey White, the edge rusher for Tech, is
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: number 85 off the list. We mentioned Prince Will at
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: Uman Mellon, the edge rusher for LSU, ranked number 84
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: on that list. Amari Thomas, Houston wide receiver, number 83
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: on the list.
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: C.J.
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: Bailey, the North Carolina State quarterback, at number 80 on
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: the list. John Mateer, the Oklahoma quarterback, number 78 on
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: the list. 77 is Ben Roberts, a Texas Tech linebacker,
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: at number... 71, Taylor Wine, the edge rusher for Oklahoma.
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: Kevin Jennings, the quarterback for SMU, is number 69 on
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: the list. Number 68 is Whit Weeks, the LSU linebacker.
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: Marcel Reed, Texas A & M quarterback, number 65 on
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: the top 100 player list, according to to the athletic.
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: Quincy Rhodes Jr., the edge rusher for Arkansas, number 64.
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: Mario Craver, the wide receiver at A & M, number 62.
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: Zabian Brown, the Alabama corner, is number 61. Josh Hoover,
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: the former TCU quarterback now at Indiana, taking over for
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: Fernando Mendoza, is number 60 in the top 100 college
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: football player list. Gunnar Stockton, the Georgia quarterback, number 56
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: in on the list. Raheem Biles, a Texas linebacker, is
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: number 53. LJ Martin, BYU running back, is number 52.
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: Number 48 is Ellis Robinson IV, the Georgia cornerback. Caden Green,
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: Missouri's offensive tackle, number 45 on this top 100 college
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: football player list. Also, Kelly Jones, a corner from Mississippi State,
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: number 36, Bryce Pollock, Texas Tech cornerback, is 36.
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: Kelly Jones, number 37.
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: David Stone, Oklahoma defensive lineman, number 35. Sam Levitt, the
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: LSU quarterback, at number 33. Arch Manning is number 32
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: in the top 100 list. About Arch, they said, forget
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: all the hyperbole surrounding Manning. Despite some early season struggles
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: from both Manning and his supporting cast, he had a
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: solid first year as a full-time starter. He threw for 3,163 yards,
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: 26 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. His late season performance, 11
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: touchdown passes and one interception in his final five games
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: was most encouraging. And his fourth year of college football
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: with an improved infrastructure around him is set to be
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: his best. So he's at number 32. Jaden Ball, the
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: Florida running back, is number 29 on the list. Ahmad Hardy,
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: the Missouri running back, of course, remember he had that
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: gunshot wound in May, probably won't be ready for the
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: season opener, but he's ranked number 28 on.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: The list. A.J.
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: Holmes, the Texas Tech defensive lineman at number 25. Bray Hubbard,
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: the Alabama safety at number 24. Trevor Goosby, the Longhorns
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: offensive tackle at number 23. Xavier Atkins, Auburn linebacker at
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: number 22. Inside the top 20, Drew Mestemaker, the former
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: Vandegrift Viper and North Texas quarterback, now at Oklahoma State,
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: number 18 on the list. He won Lacey, the Ole
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: Miss running back at number 17.
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: On the list.
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: Will Echols, the defensive lineman for Ole Miss, number 15.
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: Jordan Seaton, offensive tackle for LSU at number 14. Julian San,
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: the Ohio State quarterback, number 13.
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: K.J.
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: Bolton, the Georgia safety at number 12. And then into
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: the top 10, number 10, Cam Coleman, the Longhorns wide receiver.
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: Number nine, C.J. Carr, the Notre Dame quarterback. Number eight,
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: Carter Smith, the offensive tackle from Indiana. Number seven, South
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: Carolina edge rusher, Dylan Stewart. Number six, Dante Moore, Oregon quarterback.
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: Number five, Malachi Toney, Miami wide receiver. Number four, Colin Simmons,
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: the Longhorn edge rusher. Number three, Trinidad Chambliss, the Ole
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: Miss quarterback. Number two, Leonard Moore, The Notre Dame and
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: former Round Rock Dragon cornerback is number two and number
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: one on the list, Jeremiah Smith, the Ohio State wide receiver.
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: So, no big shocks there.
- 1:31:29Speaker 4: Do we get another wide receiver winning the Heisman? Remember
- 1:31:33Speaker 4: the extraordinary circumstances that led to one winning it in
- 1:31:36Speaker 4: 2020 on an offense coached by Sark.
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, exactly. Certainly possible. Within the realm of possibility.
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: He'll be- Longhorn should have something to say about that.
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: Yep, yep, absolutely. There may be two or three that
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: might be in the conversation. All right, we're going to
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: hear more from D'Amico Ryans coming up when we continue
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: on 1300 The Zone.
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: Well, she was.
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: Not from Texas- But she was the queen of country music,
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: and we've lost her. Dolly Parton's passed away at the
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: age of 80. And definitely an icon of country music.
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: And often described as one of the nicest people you
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: would ever come across who had been elevated to that level.
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: of international stardom.
- 1:32:38Speaker 4: Yeah, and I was obviously too young to see her
- 1:32:42Speaker 4: rise to stardom, which I think was pretty remarkable. But
- 1:32:47Speaker 4: somebody whose music I grew up hearing, even all these
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: years later, will definitely be missed.
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: Her nephew, Brian Seaver, said in a video a little
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: while ago, he said, my family and I have shared
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: a lifetime of beautiful memories with Dolly, but so have you.
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: she's always been on your television, your record player, your CD,
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: and on your phone playlist, becoming an extended part of
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: your family, whether you liked.
- 1:33:11Speaker 4: It or not.
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: Uh, she was, she'd been ill for some time and had, uh,
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: had some struggles, um, uh, a year ago, certainly. And, uh,
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: she passed away today at the age of 80 as
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: they announced it. Um, so, um, certainly, uh, uh, thoughts
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: and memories and, and, uh, did.
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: You ever get to see her in concert?
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: I did not.
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: That was one of the ones that I, I, I
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: did not get to work. Obviously I saw her a
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: lot on television and really, and truly, I think one
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: of the things that really just kind of, uh, exploded
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: her onto the scene was the movie was nine to five. Um,
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: and because it was such a, it was such an
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: entertaining movie with, uh, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin and
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: Dabney Cohen plays the villain so well. And, Um, and
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: Dolly Parton kind of comes up with the idea along
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: with the other two and, uh, uh, to, uh, kidnap
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: their boss and, and, and hold him out, uh, trap
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: him while they, uh, while they make changes and stuff.
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: So it was good.
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: And then of course her theme song was iconic as well.
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: So she'll be missed Dolly Parton, uh, passing away at
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: the age of 80. Uh, we continue with, uh, some
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: NFL conversation, uh, and, uh, D'Amico Ryans getting his team
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: ready for their final preseason game and coming off the
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: preseason loss to the Raiders last week. And he was
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: asked about, you know, when you get to this point
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: in training camp, how do you feel about your undrafted
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: guys who are still grinding, working hard, showing the effort,
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: at least those who still want to be on an
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: NFL roster, how does he feel about those undrafted guys
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: trying to make it?
- 1:35:02Speaker 9: I have a special place in my heart for the
- 1:35:03Speaker 9: undrafted players because a lot of people would say just
- 1:35:06Speaker 9: based on where you are, you shouldn't make it. But,
- 1:35:09Speaker 9: you know, guys come here and they... Just put their
- 1:35:12Speaker 9: head down. They work the right way. Do what we're
- 1:35:14Speaker 9: asking them to do. If you're one of the top
- 1:35:16Speaker 9: 53 guys on our team, we're not turning away great players.
- 1:35:20Speaker 8: Who can help us go win football games.
- 1:35:22Speaker 9: So it never matters to me when we sign a guy,
- 1:35:25Speaker 9: where we sign them, how much a guy getting paid.
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: It doesn't matter.
- 1:35:29Speaker 9: Once we got 90 guys on our team, it's our
- 1:35:32Speaker 9: job to decipher who are the best 53 for us.
- 1:35:35Speaker 9: And we're going to go with the best 53 in
- 1:35:37Speaker 9: our opinion that allows us to go win football games.
- 1:35:40Speaker 9: So undrafted guys that made a name for themselves.
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: I start with Aziz.
- 1:35:44Speaker 9: Aziz was an undrafted free agent in 2019 and look
- 1:35:48Speaker 9: at the career that he's had. He's done an outstanding
- 1:35:51Speaker 9: job just working the right way, being accountable, being a
- 1:35:55Speaker 9: great teammate, a great leader. and he's had himself a
- 1:35:58Speaker 9: tremendous career thus far. So our undrafted guys can look
- 1:36:02Speaker 9: to Aziz, and you want to see what it takes
- 1:36:05Speaker 9: to become a pro and what it takes to stick around.
- 1:36:09Speaker 9: It's about that consistency, being a professional. That's what Aziz represents,
- 1:36:13Speaker 9: and that's what those guys can look to to see
- 1:36:15Speaker 9: what it takes to make it.
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: So there's one preseason game left as they'll play Carolina
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: on the road. He was asked about what are the
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: top priorities entering that final preseason game.
- 1:36:26Speaker 9: The top priorities for us this week, first and foremost,
- 1:36:29Speaker 9: we'll get an opportunity to go in joint practice versus
- 1:36:32Speaker 9: the Panthers. So we're excited about our starters going out
- 1:36:36Speaker 9: and competing in that joint practice versus those guys. And
- 1:36:38Speaker 9: then we'll see how the game shakes up and who
- 1:36:41Speaker 9: will be out there for the game. But the main
- 1:36:43Speaker 9: priority for this week is getting our guys good, valuable
- 1:36:46Speaker 9: reps versus a really good Carolina team.
- 1:36:48Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: And does he like what he's seeing from Jake Hummel,
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: a newcomer, his impact on the defense?
- 1:36:55Speaker 9: Jake Hummel's picked up the defense really well. He has
- 1:36:57Speaker 9: been a signal caller for us. Mike Backer, he's wearing
- 1:37:00Speaker 9: the green dot when he's on the field. He's done
- 1:37:02Speaker 9: a great job of communicating, showing up, making a few plays,
- 1:37:06Speaker 9: made a nice play. Special teams there on the kickoff
- 1:37:09Speaker 9: in the game on this past Thursday, just beating this guy,
- 1:37:12Speaker 9: playing with speed, playing physical, making a nice tackle there.
- 1:37:15Speaker 9: So he's the guy who's showing that he can add
- 1:37:18Speaker 9: some value when it comes to position flex, special teams play.
- 1:37:21Speaker 9: And a four-core player, he can do that for us,
- 1:37:24Speaker 9: and he can go play on defense as well. So
- 1:37:26Speaker 9: I'm pleased with his count, pleased with what he's done
- 1:37:28Speaker 9: since he's been here.
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: And, you know, one guy he's pleased with also, the
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: third down stops, he's seeing out of Brandon Codrington in corner.
- 1:37:37Speaker 9: Yeah, Cognton, he tackle well. He flies around. He plays
- 1:37:41Speaker 9: with that swarm mindset.
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: I love that about him.
- 1:37:44Speaker 9: He's a smart player. Small, undersized player, but he's going
- 1:37:48Speaker 9: to bring everything he has. And that's what I love
- 1:37:50Speaker 9: about him. He brings it every single day. Whether he's covering,
- 1:37:54Speaker 9: he's tackling, he's going to bring it. And that's all
- 1:37:56Speaker 9: you ask. And he's done that. He's done a really
- 1:37:58Speaker 9: good job as well, I'll count.
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: All right, we'll be back to wrap up today's edition
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: of the program on 13 Under the Zone.
