- 0:00Yo, yo, yo.
- 0:02We are live.
- 0:03How is everybody tonight?
- 0:05Welcome to Fitness and Fun in Bali with Hattie Canio.
- 0:10This is our finale episode as Hattie and her boyfriend are coming back to the States soon.
- 0:17And we're so happy for that because that means the CrossFit game season is right around the corner.
- 0:22And we get to see if everything she did in Bali is going to lead up to a phenomenal game season and let her reach her ultimate goal.
- 0:32So welcome.
- 0:36Thank you.
- 0:38And I haven't chatted in a while.
- 0:42know i know the holidays everything's been crazy um and i in all this time we've been doing this show you still don't have the time zones right oh my gosh i was like when you told me 8 30 like okay yeah i'm pretty sure that's 8 30 for me too and then i had to wait till you actually put it on here or no i had to go back into our things and see your time zone and i don't know i was just i'm all over the place
- 1:10It's so hard because I have clients from all over the place and then you and me do this.
- 1:15And then my other girlfriend and I do another podcast and I'm trying to keep all these time zones in order, but it's freaking hard.
- 1:23It is.
- 1:25It's tough being a world traveler.
- 1:26Yeah.
- 1:28I need a note on my phone.
- 1:30I've actually started doing this with all my clients.
- 1:32I put their name and then I put what time zone they're in.
- 1:36Just making everything so much easier.
- 1:37Yeah.
- 1:39So then we have time changes in the United States.
- 1:43I don't know if other places do that as well.
- 1:47But yeah, your coach is in the chat.
- 1:52I know.
- 1:52I think he's saying ha because of your note taking.
- 2:02Probably.
- 2:02I mean, even though I didn't get it right when Tristan came on that last podcast, I was an hour early.
- 2:10Yeah.
- 2:11Oh, don't lie, Tristan.
- 2:12You were laughing at me.
- 2:16Yeah, yeah.
- 2:17He actually texted me to make sure the time was right.
- 2:21Oh, man.
- 2:21It's too much, I tell you.
- 2:24And they actually don't do the time zone difference here.
- 2:28Or, I mean, the clock's back.
- 2:30So that's why I was a little confused as well.
- 2:33Hmm.
- 2:36He said that him and Kenneth were listening to the barbell spin, and now they're here, which is funny.
- 2:42That makes sense.
- 2:44Yeah.
- 2:46See, I couldn't even do spin tonight because of the FOMO of Guadalupalooza that we talked about before coming on air.
- 2:53Yeah.
- 2:55Having so much FOMO.
- 2:56I wish I was there.
- 3:01And it is supposed to be the coldest weekend we've had thus far here in the Midwest.
- 3:07Like I think I have, I know you're Celsius, but a high of 16.
- 3:13That's like way below zero, like would be way below your zero.
- 3:1768 Fahrenheit to Celsius.
- 3:20No, no, no.
- 3:2116 Fahrenheit.
- 3:23Oh, I was like, what?
- 3:24Okay.
- 3:2416.
- 3:25Oh, wow.
- 3:26Minus eight or minus nine.
- 3:29Damn.
- 3:31That's the end of this weekend for us.
- 3:36Do you get snow where you are?
- 3:38Oh, yeah.
- 3:39Yeah.
- 3:41Where I grew up in the Appalachian Mountain range, we got tons of snow.
- 3:47We don't get that kind of snow, but we get snow.
- 3:52Yeah.
- 3:53Yeah.
- 3:54We've had about three snowfalls this year so far.
- 3:56But our snow usually comes later, like into February, March.
- 4:02Right.
- 4:04Yeah, we just got a snowfall at home.
- 4:06And I think before that, maybe one other, but it went quick.
- 4:10My town, we have Chinooks, and it just melts the snow right away.
- 4:16I don't know what a Chinook is, but I'll take your word for it.
- 4:20It's like a warm wind.
- 4:24This joke will probably go right over your head, but back in the 80s, Billy Crystal used to do this character on Saturday Night Live about, you look marvelous.
- 4:35And he would do it like that thing, right?
- 4:38And he said, my father always told me, don't be a schnook.
- 4:42It's not how you feel, it's how you look.
- 4:44And let me tell you something, darling, you look marvelous.
- 4:47I feel like I've heard this before.
- 4:51And let me tell you something.
- 4:52You look marvelous.
- 4:55That's so good.
- 4:56Yeah.
- 4:57And so he always said, my father always told me, don't be a schnook.
- 5:01So when you said schnook, that's all I can think of.
- 5:05Now that's all I'm going to think about.
- 5:07Don't be a schnook.
- 5:09Yeah.
- 5:12I love it.
- 5:13This is perfect.
- 5:13This is our show all the time.
- 5:15Off the rails.
- 5:16Whatever we want to talk about.
- 5:18Whatever we want to talk about.
- 5:21So I want to, I do want to talk to you about, and I talked to Tristan about this too.
- 5:27Like you going to Bali is good for you in the off season.
- 5:31You need to be outside.
- 5:33You need to be not in a routine at a gym, but to go do stuff.
- 5:40So you're coming to the end of your time in Bali.
- 5:43Did you succeed in doing that kind of clearing the, the bad energy out of the head?
- 5:52Doing all that stuff.
- 5:54I think I did.
- 5:55I mean, I still have a pretty good routine at the gym, but at the same time, like training wasn't crazy high.
- 6:03So I was able to come in and get it done as one session.
- 6:05And then I had the rest of my time to like come chill by the pool side or, you know, go on a little adventure or whatever.
- 6:13So that was really nice training starting to ramp up now though this week.
- 6:17Oh my gosh, my body is.
- 6:18broken but i love it it's it's good there's so many different like recovery tools here and um that's something i'm definitely gonna miss because we just have the ice bath and sauna downstairs so i pretty much live at the gym go ice bath sauna um yeah and we have the pool like i just went swimming this morning and all i could think of was you telling me to reach reach
- 6:43Oh, but I was getting lazy today.
- 6:44I haven't swam in a while.
- 6:46So this one, my left arm was just like, nah, I'm not going to reach today.
- 6:49But yeah, I think, I think so.
- 6:54My, my head is pretty clear and I'm feeling pretty good to come back and start grinding and get ready for the season for sure.
- 7:04When you come back, it's going to be back to Canada.
- 7:06Yeah.
- 7:09And you're on like the Western side.
- 7:13Yeah.
- 7:13I'm on the West side over in Alberta.
- 7:17So it's by, we're just like right by the Rocky mountains.
- 7:20And yeah, I, I think I'll stay in Alberta to train, but I will definitely plan at least one, maybe two visits to Houston.
- 7:31Yeah.
- 7:35I was talking to Madison as well.
- 7:37And I was like, we need to plan a week that we both go there and just train our little butts off.
- 7:41So we'll,
- 7:42definitely plan plan that and then go from there so open signups i think started yesterday yeah i saw signed up yet or you just go wait someone just mentioned it and i was like oh i wasn't even thinking of the open i've just been thinking about how crazy this week has been for training so when you fly back how long does that take
- 8:12Oh my gosh, like more than a day, maybe 30 hours of just traveling.
- 8:17So what does that do to your training?
- 8:24What's what, sorry?
- 8:26What does that do to your training?
- 8:27I mean, it puts a little damper on it, of course, because then when I get back with the time change and everything, but at the same time,
- 8:37when I come to Bali, usually we go to the gym the next day.
- 8:40So I feel pretty good.
- 8:41I think it'll just depend on how I feel.
- 8:44I might be a couple of days out, but that's okay.
- 8:48I'll just take that as like a little mini deload and, and then get back to training hard.
- 8:54So, I mean, my body kind of needs more rest than not.
- 8:59Like that's what Tristan and I have kind of realized over the time anyways.
- 9:03So we can kind of just take that as a little, it'll,
- 9:06it will kind of be at a nice time because we're already ramping up this week.
- 9:11I'll go hard next week, go hard the week after that.
- 9:13And that's the week that I leave.
- 9:15So then I'll just have a few days off to kind of just rest a little bit and then get back to it.
- 9:19Do you try to move just because you've been on a plane forever?
- 9:26Oh, yeah.
- 9:28I'll try to move for sure.
- 9:29And obviously when we travel, I try to stretch as much as I can.
- 9:35It's funny, people always look at you because you're just sitting there doing like the couch stretch or I have my lacrosse ball and I'll just be laying on the ground doing that, doing some squats, whatever you can.
- 9:47I know when we were going to Tempe, Jamie found a yoga studio at the airport.
- 10:00That's cool.
- 10:01Did she join?
- 10:03Well, yeah.
- 10:03Well, it wasn't a class.
- 10:05It was just an open for you to jump in and stretch.
- 10:07That is so smart.
- 10:13She said it was awesome.
- 10:17Every airport needs that.
- 10:19Yeah.
- 10:21So you should look for it on the way home.
- 10:22Maybe they've installed them.
- 10:23Yeah, I will for sure.
- 10:25I know there's like praying rooms and stuff.
- 10:28Watch me just go in one of those thinking it's a yoga studio.
- 10:31I'm just doing some downward dog.
- 10:35People are like, it's probably the giveaway.
- 10:39Yeah.
- 10:43Um, so you've been in Bali for months now, like six months now.
- 10:51About four because then we did a month in Egypt.
- 10:54So we've been gone for about five months.
- 10:58So what's the highlight of this year?
- 11:03Like of 2023 or just of being here or?
- 11:07Yeah, we're not putting a calendar on it.
- 11:11This stretch.
- 11:11What has been the highlight?
- 11:18I think just listening to my body, I've, I've told you this, but I had some injuries going on or niggles, what I call it.
- 11:27You're like, what the heck is a niggle?
- 11:29But yeah, I had like some tendonitis and a little bit in my knee as well.
- 11:32And
- 11:33There was like a couple of days where I was really frustrated, really down on myself.
- 11:37And then of course I messaged my mindset coach and he always just knows what to say.
- 11:41And he's just telling me like, use this time to work on things that you usually wouldn't.
- 11:47And I really did just work on all the small things.
- 11:50And I feel just as strong, if not stronger by just working on like the stability muscles, working on all the tiny little, you know, non-sexy
- 12:01exercises that I don't do all the time and I feel really good.
- 12:04So it is just a great reminder that I need to keep at that and not just let things go by the wayside.
- 12:13Like it is very important.
- 12:15So, and especially getting older, you know, you need to keep that stuff up.
- 12:20So yeah, it's just a good reminder.
- 12:22And I think that that's been my highlight of just stepping back.
- 12:26Usually it'd probably take me a week to get over it.
- 12:28But again, I texted my mindset coach,
- 12:30He laid it into me, you know, told me how it is.
- 12:33And I was able to get out of it quick and, you know, find the advantage of it.
- 12:39So, yeah.
- 12:42What's the one thing that you got better at while you were there?
- 12:46Ooh.
- 12:50I would say... I think kind of as a whole being...
- 13:01a better, I mean, I, I think that I'm a good friend, but also like, I, I feel like I became a better friend in the sense of like, I'm trying to ask better questions to my friends and I'm trying to, um, like not give out advice rather than I want to, I want to like really listen to people more.
- 13:23And I think that I've done a really good job at that here.
- 13:27of just like sitting back and listening to people and asking better questions rather than just being like, oh, well, I did this because it's easy for everyone.
- 13:36It's easy for us to be like, oh, I did this.
- 13:38So maybe you should try this.
- 13:40You know what I mean?
- 13:41But everyone's different.
- 13:42And so, I mean, I can see the value in advice, but I can also see the value in asking people questions so that they can kind of figure it out themselves.
- 13:51So I really tried to do that while being here.
- 13:55And I think.
- 13:57I think I got better at it for sure.
- 14:01So with this experience, you go to a new place, and I'm sure you see people that you saw last year, but I'm sure you meet a lot of new people as well.
- 14:15So what was more exciting for you, seeing old friends or meeting new friends?
- 14:23Oh, you can't put that on me.
- 14:28I mean, obviously it's always good.
- 14:30So we have a friend that lives here.
- 14:32When we were here during the pandemic, we had such a tight knit friend group.
- 14:38And now all of those friends have left except for Liz.
- 14:41And obviously every time I come back, it's so exciting to see Liz and I'm always so happy to see her.
- 14:48So like, I really can't pick one or the other.
- 14:51It's definitely a bit of both, but this time around, it's been really cool to meet
- 14:57some people from around the world.
- 15:00And I have gotten a lot closer with a few other people.
- 15:03So that's been really cool.
- 15:06And then obviously, like my training partner, he came back as well.
- 15:10So that was just amazing.
- 15:12I don't know if you saw, but I just posted like a ton about him just saying goodbye and stuff.
- 15:17But yeah, Aaron is a really, a really fun guy, really cool.
- 15:22And like, we work really well together for training partners.
- 15:25So
- 15:26It was sad to see him go, but I'm really happy that he came to train as well.
- 15:32And I didn't really answer your question, but all of it, honestly.
- 15:36It's just always good to see familiar faces, and I do like meeting new people.
- 15:41So, yeah.
- 15:44Who's a better scooter driver, you or Jake?
- 15:47Me, for sure.
- 15:48Right?
- 15:51He's right over here.
- 15:54Scott asked, who's the better...
- 15:56A scooter driver, me or Jake?
- 16:02Yeah, biased opinion, he says.
- 16:03I think I am and he thinks he is, so.
- 16:11What is the one thing you did that made you step outside your comfort zone the most while there?
- 16:19Ooh, that's a good one.
- 16:21You're just throwing out all these hard questions.
- 16:28wrapping up this limited series and it's been so fun right so now we got to do the fun questions it has been fun i'm sad it's over but we'll get on we'll be chatting more anyways this series is over you're still a friend of the show yeah of course for sure yeah um what i don't even know what has been
- 16:57I would have to say, I'm trying to think of all the things I got really comfortable, I guess, here in Bali.
- 17:07I think when I come here, I get really comfortable.
- 17:10Um, I mean, it is really cool.
- 17:14Cause when you come here, you find people like minded people and you just have really deep chats.
- 17:19So I probably say like some of my deep chats and like, you know, explaining
- 17:25some things that have gone on in my life in those deep chats.
- 17:29I think that that's, that can be really uncomfortable is telling people about your past and stuff.
- 17:33So probably that, I mean, you always find someone like you've opened up so much on the show.
- 17:42Um, but I, but I also remember a time when you did an Olympic lifting meet and got moved into the elite division last minute.
- 17:53Okay, yes, that is definitely one of the most uncomfortable things.
- 17:58Because at first I was like, oh, they're going to put me in the higher.
- 18:01But then I sat back and was like, no, this is it.
- 18:04If you want to be training with the best.
- 18:07So I'm glad you brought that up.
- 18:08Yeah, that was just so long ago.
- 18:10I'm like, oh, man.
- 18:12Yeah, that was definitely probably the biggest, the biggest.
- 18:17And you ended up winning like 120 million somethings.
- 18:23I got $6.5 million.
- 18:25Or no, I got the $2 million or whatever, but yeah.
- 18:32Yeah, that was definitely a really cool experience.
- 18:36That got me out of my comfort zone for sure.
- 18:38So what was the coolest thing you saw in the natural landscape of Bali or Egypt?
- 18:49Ooh, yeah.
- 18:51I mean, the pyramids were just so cool, right?
- 18:53And they've always been on my bucket list.
- 18:55So those were really cool.
- 18:58It was extravagant to see.
- 19:00But I honestly think the coolest was being up in that hot air balloon and seeing temples from above and just seeing the landscapes.
- 19:12How beautiful it is and how barren too.
- 19:14I mean, it's just a different kind of beauty, right?
- 19:17When I'm home, it's full of trees and mountains and farmers field, flat farmers fields.
- 19:23But there it was just, you had a little bit of mountain, you had some desert, you had some palm trees.
- 19:28It was pretty magical.
- 19:34If someone was going to Bali...
- 19:39What is the first thing they should do when they get there?
- 19:48I would say the first thing you should do here is not go somewhere away from the touristy place like Ubud.
- 20:02If you're kind of like a hippie ish person, go to Ubud.
- 20:06That's like the jungle.
- 20:08hippie area where people, you know, go do breath work and yoga and a lot of vegans are there and not to be like stereotypical, but yeah, you just go out into the forest and there's like a monkey forest there.
- 20:21You can go see cool monkeys just running around.
- 20:24Um, but if you're more of a diver or whatever, you can go up north to Ahmed and, and go dive.
- 20:30So I'd say go somewhere far from like, cause where we live here in Changu is just so busy.
- 20:36So touristy, it's really cool to be here.
- 20:38i would say go experience something else or even if you want to be kind of close like uluwatu that's an that's a nice surfer's place right so it kind of just depends on what kind of person and what kind of things you want to do but there's like there's different areas for everybody so let's say go experience those places first and then if you're here for a few weeks come to changu after which is like more of the party scene the more of the like touristy just
- 21:04busy gyms, really good food, that kind of stuff.
- 21:09Um, yeah.
- 21:11So find what you like to do and go find that area and go experience that first for sure.
- 21:16You know what I've learned or appreciate about you the most is that you never give a one word, one answer.
- 21:22I am all over the place.
- 21:28Um,
- 21:28I used to get made fun of all the time because when people ask questions, I would always say, well, I really have two answers or three answers.
- 21:38But I've found my soulmate with answering questions.
- 21:42Well, you got to include everybody.
- 21:44You know what I mean?
- 21:49So my next question is,
- 21:52What, what helped you most to get ready for the next CrossFit game season that you did there?
- 22:05Probably listening to my body and just working on these, you know, smaller things that I wouldn't usually work on right now.
- 22:14I'm trying to work on the mindsets part of things, but yeah, it would be just working on that tendonitis for both my knee and my elbow and
- 22:23Yeah, focusing on that.
- 22:28Where did competing at LFIT fit in there?
- 22:33I mean, that is a great stepping stone because it just gives me more experience for competition for sure.
- 22:42But I mean, I think that the injuries are more important than that.
- 22:52But yeah, I would say
- 22:54it's definitely up there and getting experienced because I don't have a ton of experience.
- 22:59Um, and I definitely learned a lot of things going there, so it definitely helps.
- 23:05Um, yeah, it would definitely be up there, but I would say the injury stuff is more important for sure.
- 23:12In my mind anyways, I don't know if Tristan's still on here, but maybe he has a different opinion.
- 23:19I'm sure he would agree though.
- 23:21Injuries are just poop.
- 23:23So you've lived this glamorous Bali life for five months and you're going to go home.
- 23:31What's the first thing you're going to do when you get home?
- 23:35Is it going to be my body in motion?
- 23:41Cause as soon as we get home, skin, you just turn it to like, it starts cracking and you get all dry.
- 23:49And, uh, so,
- 23:52Probably lather myself in lotion.
- 23:56Okay.
- 23:58Is there any food or anything you missed?
- 24:01What's that?
- 24:03Not the answer you were looking for, probably, but... No, but it's your answer, and this is your show, and it's whatever you want it to be.
- 24:12But I do want to know, like... What's that?
- 24:16What did you just ask?
- 24:17Sorry?
- 24:18Well, what I was going to say is... So...
- 24:22culturally the the food the etiquette or the not the etiquette the um the food is it a lot different in bali than it is back home like do you miss anything or do you pretty much eat the same things um i do miss cooking that's for sure because i don't cook here it's a lot cheaper to just go out here and there's so many different
- 24:47Like this is a foodie.
- 24:49That's why I say go experience whatever you want to experience and then come back to Chengdu and experience the food.
- 24:54Because whatever kind of food you're looking for, you can find it.
- 24:58And yeah, you can find pretty healthy places as well.
- 25:03So at home, I miss cooking.
- 25:05For here, I'll miss just all the really good food.
- 25:08Like last night, we went to a sushi place.
- 25:11It's called Tiger.
- 25:12Every Wednesday, they have a really good deal on rolls, like specialty rolls.
- 25:18Um, Mondays we go to this place called Warung Gute and you get buy one, get one free of just these big skewers of meat, just meat, meat, meat, meat, meat.
- 25:29And you can get all these different sauces, really good sides with it.
- 25:33Salad is good.
- 25:34Mashed potatoes.
- 25:36Yeah.
- 25:36There's just a really cool food scene here.
- 25:39So that's what I'll miss about Bali and then home.
- 25:43I do like cooking, so yeah.
- 25:48Yeah, you think you hate cooking until you don't get to do it.
- 25:52Yeah, 100%.
- 25:55I just like my routine in that way.
- 25:58Well, I just want to thank you for doing this series with us.
- 26:01It's been so fun getting to know you.
- 26:04As I said, you will always be a friend of the show.
- 26:06We're going to pull you in for different things, maybe some analyst work.
- 26:12I'm sure I'll see you at semifinals, all those things.
- 26:17And we will definitely stay in touch throughout because we become big fans.
- 26:23And we want to see you.
- 26:26I'm sorry, what was that?
