- 0:12Welcome to Sometimes Their Side Eye, a podcast about two friends
- 0:16having real and unfiltered conversations about dogs and
- 0:20people. Listen as we talk about our
- 0:22lives with dogs, training behavior, share some laughs and
- 0:25a whole lot of banter. I'm Heather.
- 0:28And I'm Christy. And we have a special guest to
- 0:31talk with us about traveling with dogs, which I'm super
- 0:35excited about. Yeah, today we have Tara
- 0:38McKinney with us who is a fantastic foster, a savvy social
- 0:44media presence, an awesome advocate, fierce fundraiser, and
- 0:48honestly just an all around champion for senior dogs.
- 0:52We are so excited to have you here, Tara.
- 0:54Yay, welcome. Tara, thank.
- 0:56You. So much for having me.
- 0:58I'm very excited. This just happens to be my
- 1:02favorite subject and thank you so much for inviting me on.
- 1:05So traveling with dogs has kind of evolved from other things I
- 1:10was into for 12 years I have been fostering dogs and I would
- 1:16say about eight years ago that kind of turned into Phil
- 1:20fostering, but adopting a lot of senior dogs.
- 1:24And our household since then has typically had right around 7
- 1:31senior dogs. And of course they're older, so
- 1:33it's a bit of a rotating crew. Lots of different personalities,
- 1:37lots of different needs. And it can make traveling so fun
- 1:42and a little tricky too. So I'm excited to share all of
- 1:46my little tricks and hints and ideas for traveling.
- 1:51I've had to solve a lot of different problems.
- 1:54On the road. So I am so excited to share.
- 1:57But yes, currently we do have seven and we do have one young
- 2:01one right now, five. Everyone else is over the age of
- 2:0511. Wow, that's awesome.
- 2:07And most of them are big dogs, or at least medium sized dogs,
- 2:10right? Yeah, in between 50 and 75
- 2:14pounds. And we do have one little right
- 2:16now, maybe £20 a CHI. A chichi.
- 2:21A chichi. Got to keep it interesting.
- 2:25Someone. Is going to be the boss.
- 2:27It's going to be the small dog, right?
- 2:31Exactly. That's awesome.
- 2:32The cool thing is Heather and I know Tara through rescue.
- 2:36Also, little side note, I was following Tara on social media
- 2:41before I ever met her in person. So I remember Tara back when you
- 2:45only had Wally, your best friend, just one dog and only
- 2:49fostered. And so I've watched that
- 2:51progression and then I got to meet you in person and you were
- 2:53as cool. In person, as on social media,
- 2:56even cooler, I would say it's hard to believe it's true.
- 3:01What's really funny is that I met Tara in person because of
- 3:05COVID. This is that's weird And you
- 3:09were having outside sort of bonfires to let everybody social
- 3:14distance on your property and still have a little connection
- 3:18with fellow canine people and I went to one of your bonfires and
- 3:22that's where we met in person for the first time.
- 3:24So that's a really. Beautiful thing, I think that we
- 3:27all needed, actually. Yes, yes, that definitely.
- 3:32I loved it too. I want to hear about you
- 3:35traveling with dogs. So.
- 3:37Yes. And I have to say also, Heather
- 3:40just found out this last weekend when we traveled with our own
- 3:44dogs that my dog had never been in a hotel in Travesty last
- 3:49weekend. So I knew I was not the person
- 3:53to present this information, but I didn't know I was like a
- 3:56travel episode would be so fun. I'm clearly not that person
- 4:02because at 12 years old, she went to her first hotel.
- 4:06Oh, yeah, yeah. And and listen, I was a little
- 4:09slow on, you know, getting around to doing all the
- 4:11traveling as well. I've always been a traveler, but
- 4:16I can tell you exactly when I went overboard with it, maybe
- 4:20when I went off the deep end into traveling with dogs,
- 4:24there's a little story behind it.
- 4:26It was 2015 in December when we adopted our first two senior
- 4:32dogs. They were a bonded pair later.
- 4:35I would say later that year, but it was the end of 2015, so I
- 4:39need to say 2016. We adopted a senior senior like
- 4:43a dog named Grandpa. He came with that name.
- 4:46No, OK. You can imagine.
- 4:48We picked him up and he looked ratched.
- 4:51He looked like. He probably wouldn't be with us
- 4:53very long. He stunk to high heaven.
- 4:56We just didn't think he was going to be with us for very
- 4:59long at all And we got him some medical care, some dental care
- 5:02and he started to come to life. His allergies got better.
- 5:06We started treating him for valley fever and really he came
- 5:10with this big personality punch. And when I say his personality
- 5:16was like you palpable in a room, let me explain.
- 5:19I would take him to the vet and. The girls behind the desk, you
- 5:23would maybe think you might get this for a puppy, but the girls
- 5:26behind the desk would start screaming as if Justin Bieber
- 5:29had walked in and holding their chest like we were, like it was.
- 5:35It was an incredible thing to watch, a really fun thing to
- 5:38watch, but I felt it. You could feel his energy.
- 5:41He had swag, but I still babyed him a little bit and we didn't.
- 5:46I thought, there's no way Grandpa can do this.
- 5:49There's no way Grandpa could do that well.
- 5:51Grandpa went ahead and got very sick, to the point where I
- 5:55thought this might be our goodbye and it just happened to
- 6:00be the same week that I had to drive to San Diego for a family
- 6:03member's wedding and I just thought, what am I going to do
- 6:07here? My solution ended up being have
- 6:10someone stay at her house with the rest of the dogs and I would
- 6:13take Grandpa with me. That way if anything was going
- 6:16down, I was right there by his side.
- 6:18I would take him to a vet there. I got that all set up.
- 6:21I got a dog friendly Airbnb. Instead of staying staying with
- 6:24family I did have to take him to the vet.
- 6:27One time while we were there he got some nausea medication and
- 6:30eventually I thought I'm I'm going to take him to the beach
- 6:33to get a little air this dog. Now I'm convinced he was trying
- 6:38to fake his own death because he came to life.
- 6:42He is trotting down the beach. He doesn't hear me say his name
- 6:46anymore. He has his chin up.
- 6:48He has his flipper paws flapping.
- 6:52Everybody's turning their head looking at this guy, like the
- 6:55crust melted off of his nose. It was like the fountain of
- 6:58youth, and I could barely get him off that beach.
- 7:01And that very day I told my husband.
- 7:05I don't care if I have to leave town without you or what it
- 7:09takes. I'm going to get this dog back
- 7:11to the beach as much as I possibly can until his last day
- 7:15here. And that's exactly what I did
- 7:17and I was at that beach with the dog like I would say once or
- 7:22twice a month for the next year and a half until he actually
- 7:24did. And his not his very last day
- 7:28but his second to last day he was on the beach and.
- 7:33I like the things that this dog could do all of a sudden, was
- 7:36what inspired me to start testing the waters with all of
- 7:41my dogs and not assume that they just needed to be coddled inside
- 7:46of the house. And that was when really, I feel
- 7:49like my whole life changed and there's I feel like I'm a
- 7:53better. Senior dog parent or, you know,
- 7:56guardian or whatever you would like to call it, because that's
- 7:59what we do. We just, we run until we can't
- 8:02run anymore. But I definitely take on some
- 8:08things that are borderline insane just to get my dogs to
- 8:13wherever they need to be, having ones with sometimes special
- 8:17needs, as in dog reactivity. So I have to get really creative
- 8:20on where I'm going to. Go so they actually have a good
- 8:23time. And I'm not just doing this for
- 8:25me. I want to be traveling for my
- 8:28dogs, catering to them, not pressuring them to do things and
- 8:32pushing them to do things where they're uncomfortable.
- 8:35So it takes some. Little creativity, little
- 8:40research. Yeah, I have definitely seen the
- 8:45years come away from a senior dog that you adopt and it is
- 8:49such an amazing experience to see them get younger every day
- 8:53that they're with you. It's such a cool experience to
- 8:56be a part of and it fills your heart differently.
- 9:01Yes, yeah, it's very much a different feeling, but like the
- 9:04best feeling. Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:08And so you started with one dog traveling and what's the most
- 9:12dogs you've taken in one trip? 7.
- 9:16Seven. Oh yeah, of course, why not?
- 9:19So casually 7/7. So there was like a little bit
- 9:25of there's a little special stuff you have to do with Seven,
- 9:28and unless you're going to stay at your Airbnb all day, you need
- 9:32to account for all of the different personalities and all
- 9:34of the different needs. I don't prefer to leave dogs
- 9:39alone at Airbnb's if I can help it, but definitely not like a
- 9:43large portion of that size of a crew.
- 9:46So what I have done in the past that has worked out really well
- 9:50for me is I scope out local Rover dog sitters and.
- 9:57I feel pretty comfortable leaving the dogs with a Rover
- 10:00sitter because what I'm doing is very different than leaving for
- 10:03like a week or two and leaving my dogs behind.
- 10:06I'm right there. I'm just letting them know, hey,
- 10:09I'm going to be coming in and out and I'm going to be
- 10:11switching out dogs all day so these two can go to the beach
- 10:14with me. These two are good at a
- 10:16restaurant. These two would love to take a
- 10:19walk in this park. This one's going to need a
- 10:22wagon, so we'll do hand, you know, that kind of thing.
- 10:25So I'm in constant communication with them all day.
- 10:29They have been easy to book and fairly affordable considering
- 10:32what boarding costs. My dogs have loved it and it
- 10:35allows me to take everyone and have everyone be there safe.
- 10:40But they all get their little pieces of adventure while we're
- 10:44somewhere new. That is genius.
- 10:47I know it's such a creative solution.
- 10:50Like, it's so straightforward and yet I'm like, man, I would
- 10:54have never thought of that. No, it makes complete sense.
- 10:57And also the dogs get the experience of hanging out with
- 11:00someone else, so that's. In which they also love, yeah.
- 11:04They have, they don't have separation anxiety.
- 11:07They have FOMO. So they as long as they're there
- 11:11and they're getting some kind of new experience whether that be
- 11:14going in the car with us to the beach or.
- 11:17Hanging out with a new person at the Airbnb?
- 11:19They're fine. They don't care about anything
- 11:22except missing out. And then you're also being
- 11:25because most Airbnb's, even the ones that accept dogs, they
- 11:28don't want you just to leave a bunch of dogs behind.
- 11:31If I ever because I stayed Airbnb's with my dogs as well
- 11:36and if I'm in a situation I always make sure it's okay if I
- 11:39leave them behind and they're crated and that would be like if
- 11:42I go to dinner or something like that.
- 11:44But in general we want to follow whatever the.
- 11:47The B&B rules are so I love that creative.
- 11:49Solution. And in some counties, believe it
- 11:52or not, there's actually a renter laws.
- 11:55And I believe this might be around here, maybe a California
- 11:59thing. But for example, my last trip we
- 12:02stopped up into Sonoma County. Sonoma County actually has a law
- 12:07that renters are not allowed to leave their animals in Airbnb's
- 12:11at all alone. Alone.
- 12:14Yeah, indoor or outdoor. And I think when it comes down
- 12:17to is using your common sense, did I leave my dog and the
- 12:20Airbnb alone for a little while? I did because I had four with
- 12:24me. The rule exists to keep
- 12:28neighbors happy. And so as long as you are pretty
- 12:32confident or you have maybe a ring camera and you're close by
- 12:36and you can spy on your dog and make sure.
- 12:39There's not a bunch of noise and that's why the rules there.
- 12:42And I am a little bit of a rule Bender, but what I like to do is
- 12:45think about what they're asking you to do and are you able to
- 12:50bend the rule but still get the end goal?
- 12:53They don't want to upset the neighbors.
- 12:55That's all there is to that one. And to be honest, because I have
- 12:58traveled with my Rottweiler since he was a puppy all over.
- 13:02Everywhere. You're not even supposed to
- 13:04leave your dog behind in a hotel room, So technically that's a
- 13:11rule too. And like in my case with Tiago,
- 13:14he's excellent in a hotel. He grew up going to hotels.
- 13:17He's great in a crate. So yeah, I'll leave him behind
- 13:19in a hotel room, but I'll turn on the TV, make sure the outside
- 13:23noise is cut off as much as possible.
- 13:25And I know he's not being loud and, you know, making noise.
- 13:29My bulldog. Maybe not as often would I do
- 13:33that because, well, Bulldog, but I think I think that makes sense
- 13:38and we want to be respectful of the places that we're visiting.
- 13:41Yeah, for sure. Because if we really, truly love
- 13:44traveling with our dogs, we want other people to also travel with
- 13:47their dogs. We don't want to do anything to
- 13:50upset a host enough that they would make it not possible for
- 13:53the next person. Absolutely respect there.
- 13:57Another way that I've kind of gotten around that as well.
- 13:59Instead of hiring a Rover sitter, sometimes I just invite
- 14:04other people to come a lot of times when I'm asking for a dog
- 14:08friendly Airbnb. And when I say dog friendly, I
- 14:12mean they can't have a fee for every single dog.
- 14:16I will never be able to afford it.
- 14:18They can't have any breed restriction and they can't have
- 14:22a number, right. So they'll say dog friendly and
- 14:25they don't give any other specifics.
- 14:27I don't ask permission for seven.
- 14:29I just say like okay, Well, me and my pack of dogs are
- 14:33traveling, you know, and hope they don't say anything.
- 14:36And if they don't, then we're there.
- 14:37Usually those houses or townhomes or whatever it is,
- 14:40they're usually bigger than what I need.
- 14:43So I usually end up with a room I'm just shutting off and not
- 14:45using. So in those scenarios, I ask
- 14:48around, Hey, do you want a free vacation?
- 14:51All you have to do is these couple times.
- 14:53I did this for a wedding. I said, oh, would you like to
- 14:56hang out in Long Beach for four days free of charge?
- 15:00I'll even drive you there. All you have to do is.
- 15:03Make sure my dogs don't do anything stupid for like, these
- 15:06four hours. Well, hell yeah.
- 15:10Yep. And it's a bonus for everybody,
- 15:12so there's a couple ways to get around it for sure.
- 15:15I like it. And so what's the longest you've
- 15:18traveled with your dogs? Like distance wise and time
- 15:21wise? Well, two weeks is time wise and
- 15:25distance wise would be pretty much to the Canadian border.
- 15:30There is a National Park up there and it now, of course, I
- 15:35don't remember what it's called, but it is in Washington and it's
- 15:40one of the very least traveled national parks in the US, but
- 15:45beautiful. And the reason I went there was
- 15:47because I had my dog, reactive dog with me.
- 15:50So I went to the least visited National Park on a Monday.
- 15:53And I'm going to tell you what, we had a great time.
- 15:56We have to do all the things. That sounds like magic.
- 16:00Yeah, but that was a that's a 24 hour drive to get there.
- 16:04We've also been weighed on the like Corpus Christi, Padre
- 16:08Island, Texas, which is a very long drive as well, but that
- 16:12drive was technically shorter. But that one I had seven dogs.
- 16:16The one the 24 hour drive I had three very capable dogs.
- 16:20So it was it seemed shorter. Perspective, yes.
- 16:26Yeah. Also, when you drive across
- 16:28Texas, it takes forever, so I feel like that.
- 16:32Absolutely nothing ever changes. What what prep do you do for
- 16:38taking your reactive dog? So I know you said that you do
- 16:41some research, So what kind of research do you do?
- 16:44So I do my best. You can't prepare for
- 16:47everything, but I just try to find isolated places and then
- 16:52sometimes I stay near them. And sometimes I drive to them
- 16:57and there's a few people and a few dogs and we just turn around
- 17:00and go back and try again later. Honestly, sometimes it's a
- 17:03little bit like that you might think you're going to go and do
- 17:06something and you're not going to go and do something.
- 17:09And it's not that I can't control my dog that is reactive.
- 17:14The problem is, is I want this to be a good experience for him.
- 17:19And once he sees a dog, and of course he lives with seven as
- 17:22well. So we're not talking dog
- 17:24reactive in the home. I'm talking out and about.
- 17:27If he sees one in the car, he sees one on the leash.
- 17:30He immediately starts to have this like very anxious stance,
- 17:35panting, whining, and it only gets worse and worse.
- 17:38So if he sees a couple dogs in the beginning of an outing, it's
- 17:43going to take a very long time for him to chill out and he's
- 17:47not having fun and that's not the point.
- 17:49So I I have not taken him on a million trips, but the ones I've
- 17:54taken him on, sometimes we are doing some circles and some
- 17:57dipping in here and there and I'm running out of the car and
- 18:01scoping. Are we good here, you know?
- 18:03I love that you just honor who he is instead of trying to be
- 18:06like, OK, we're going to make this work because I drove 24
- 18:09hours. Yeah, well, I, you know, I did
- 18:12that when I was younger. With him.
- 18:13He's the, he is the OG dog. He's the dog that has been with
- 18:16me for 12 years, the only one. So I did try that.
- 18:21I tried to do that when I was younger and I regret that now.
- 18:24Honestly, he never did change. We of course did every training
- 18:28in the world. I would have loved for him to go
- 18:30to every restaurant and every, you know, thing with me, but
- 18:33it's not him so. It's so much more of a relaxing
- 18:39relationship now that I stopped trying to force him to do things
- 18:42that he does not like. Which is what we are going for,
- 18:45yeah, with our dogs, yeah. Just stop.
- 18:50Just stop. I think that's a lot actually.
- 18:53Just like not to do with travels, but just to do with
- 18:56dogs in general. I think my best piece of advice
- 18:59would be meet your dog where they're at and your relationship
- 19:02will be better. Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:05When you are traveling, what's your normal kind of routine?
- 19:09Okay. Now here's where I did make a
- 19:12small list, because, you know, I did not want to forget this.
- 19:16I mean, it's complicated. I think about this for days, and
- 19:19as you know, each day that goes by, I'm checking off what I've
- 19:22done on a whiteboard, making sure I didn't screw anything up.
- 19:26Okay. So the boring stuff.
- 19:29But important because you don't want to end up in a worst case
- 19:32scenario, which in my mind would be your dog is missing and
- 19:37you're not even in your own state or town.
- 19:40You have a medical emergency and you have not prepared at all.
- 19:44Or you have because we live in Arizona.
- 19:47Car trouble in the heat and I try to of course avoid driving
- 19:52and when it's 120 degrees out with dogs in the car.
- 19:55But we have a decently long summer here.
- 19:58It is extremely hot until you're talking, it's hot until five
- 20:02hours, and you're trying to escape the heat with your dogs
- 20:05to give them a break. So we do, of course do it, but
- 20:07it terrifies me. Here's what I have for all those
- 20:10things, which I think is kind of common sense, but also maybe
- 20:14there's a couple I have in there that might get you update your
- 20:17dog's vaccinations before you go and update their tags and their
- 20:21microchips and make sure that they have a secure collar.
- 20:26I did lose one of my dogs on one of my trips and I never really
- 20:29told anybody about it and I don't.
- 20:31I don't hide anything. Just was like we were in the
- 20:34middle of traveling and I was busy doing 1000 other things and
- 20:38I didn't feel like I needed to go and tell everybody that Bubs
- 20:42ran away. We had an Airbnb up in Arrowhead
- 20:45Lake and we do a Halloween themed or like a horror themed
- 20:51photo shoot every year with all the dogs.
- 20:53And we got this Airbnb that had a enclosed yard, but it was
- 20:58enclosed I would say for the big dogs.
- 21:00But Bubs is our 20 pounder and he was fairly new to us.
- 21:06He sticks around I guess The door was left ajar, the sliding
- 21:11door just the tiniest bit for some air to come through and I
- 21:15don't know why, but I woke up at midnight.
- 21:17And I thought the last thing that had happened was he had
- 21:20tried to get on the bed with us and I told him he couldn't.
- 21:24And I think at that moment he must have packed his bags and
- 21:28started trotting down the street like okay.
- 21:31I will find someone else, yeah. So go find a new family.
- 21:34He was like he looked offended and I am pretty sure that he
- 21:37hatefully like left the house. But we're in the area where
- 21:40there's coyotes and large birds. And everything else.
- 21:44And to be perfectly candid, a lot of people with outdoor type
- 21:50of animals, not so much indoor. I I was looking for him at
- 21:54midnight. I couldn't find him.
- 21:56Just like I had had that nightmare and I looked at my
- 21:59phone and I was already getting. I had already missed like
- 22:02several calls and messages. Someone had them and they took
- 22:05him inside because they were also worried.
- 22:07Even though their dogs are outdoor dogs.
- 22:09They said he was too small, so I brought them inside.
- 22:11I mean, I just felt like I dodged a bullet.
- 22:14And I also thought he was so new to us that I thought, Oh my God,
- 22:19what if I didn't update that tag and put a good collar on him?
- 22:24I look every single time now. Sometimes I even put two tags on
- 22:29sometimes. I'm a little crazy about it now,
- 22:30but that was very scary. Yeah, that was very scary.
- 22:34Also, the car situation, you need a reliable vehicle.
- 22:39If that means you have to rent one, then that's what you have
- 22:42to do. I suggest go and get an oil
- 22:45change because they will also check your tire pressure.
- 22:48They will also check your windshield wipers, which I know
- 22:51sounds very. Strange, but if you live in
- 22:54Arizona, your windshield wipers shred in the desert heat and you
- 22:58don't even know it. And then if you are all of a
- 23:00sudden in Oregon and it's pouring rain and you're using
- 23:04your windshield wipers for the first time in months and all
- 23:07this plastic just shreds on your windshield and you're on the
- 23:09freeway with your seven dogs and you can't see it's.
- 23:13It's not ideal. What?
- 23:14You would have wished you had those looked at, yeah?
- 23:18Terror. Spoken like somebody who has,
- 23:20has. Has had that experience, yeah.
- 23:23I've kind of had like, it wasn't really exactly that.
- 23:25I had that experience on my own, but I pictured myself with the
- 23:29seven dogs in the car having a meltdown.
- 23:32If you are having to drive across one of those freeways,
- 23:35that goes for hours and hours and you don't have great
- 23:39reception and you don't have a backup plan.
- 23:42If your car breaks down, there are Mr. systems that you can
- 23:46charge. There are charging.
- 23:48Or plug in like battery packs For camping, I would suggest
- 23:52having one fully charged with water with frozen bottles of
- 23:56water and triple-A. It's honestly so cheap compared
- 24:01to what you can get. Somebody will come and save you.
- 24:06You know somebody will come and save you because I don't know
- 24:09what else would you do. Call 911.
- 24:11Yeah, tell them you're having a heart attack and you need to put
- 24:13your dogs. If it was hot.
- 24:15Enough maybe. I mean, seriously, I probably
- 24:17would. Yeah, so if a listener is not
- 24:21able to afford AAA on the regular, check with your
- 24:24insurance. I know my insurance has.
- 24:27I like put on for like a buck a month of.
- 24:29Insurance. That's what I do too, because
- 24:31it's cheaper. And the annually, yeah and they
- 24:33are on it. And make yourself some friends
- 24:37along the way. And let them know what you're
- 24:39doing. Hey, are you going to be home?
- 24:41You're the closest friend to me at this position.
- 24:43Like if I get into some trouble, can you help me?
- 24:47Because I'm traveling with all the dogs.
- 24:49I've also done that. I do phone a friend all the
- 24:51time. I drove a survivor from this 367
- 24:55Actually dog fighting bust from Jacksonville to Arizona by
- 25:00myself years ago and. I had plotted out friends along
- 25:07the way to meet up with my one friend actually, because it was
- 25:12last minute, the dogs transport just became available and it was
- 25:16like I was like, I'll drive her. So it was sort of last minute
- 25:19and I called my friend in Louisiana.
- 25:22Literally, I'm driving in the car, I'm like, hey, I got an old
- 25:26lady Pitbull in my car and I'm just wondering if I can stop and
- 25:30let her go potty on your front lawn.
- 25:33Yes, like. I need nothing else from you.
- 25:36And she was like, of course I hadn't seen her in like 10 years
- 25:40since. She was not sure.
- 25:42That is me. That is what I do.
- 25:44I also make friends online that I've never met and I definitely
- 25:48have no stranger danger and just stop randomly.
- 25:52People's houses. OK, you're braver than I am.
- 25:55I usually pick people that I already know, but fair enough.
- 25:59Oh, I have no shame, no shame in my game.
- 26:01I don't know. Nothing bad's happened yet.
- 26:04She's also traveling with seven dogs, so I feel like you're
- 26:08relatively safe. Yeah, I was traveling with a 25
- 26:12year old Pitbull who was like, you know, I'll.
- 26:15Rickety and yeah. She was not going to help you.
- 26:18No, no, It's really funny that you bring up maintenance in your
- 26:22car because we're going on a trip and I literally took our
- 26:26vehicle for an oil change today, got the air filter checked, got
- 26:30the tires, like the whole thing. So it cracks me up because I'm
- 26:34like, Oh yes, you did it too, you.
- 26:35Did it right before our trip to California.
- 26:37There you go. Yeah, every time I do and I'm
- 26:41yeah, I feel better, you know, Of course.
- 26:43I mean, something could go wrong, of course, but that I
- 26:46feel way more secure knowing somebody looked at my car and
- 26:50they didn't see anything crazy. I feel like us living in Arizona
- 26:54that we do have that fear of the heat and what it can do to our
- 26:57vehicles, so we might be a little bit more over the top
- 27:01about being careful. We might be, yeah.
- 27:04But I've had batteries die on me for like.
- 27:07Seemingly no reason. And it's just this summer is
- 27:11brutal. I also carry the chargers and
- 27:15then I have everything to change a tire.
- 27:17And I know how to change a tire. And guys, if you don't know how
- 27:20to change a tire, it's actually really easy.
- 27:23And also if you're a single chick looking to try to find
- 27:27some dudes. So change the tire on the side
- 27:29of the road if you don't need it.
- 27:31I swear I've not in like so many beep beep like, hey, do you need
- 27:34some help? I could have.
- 27:35I could have caught me a husband off the side of the street, I
- 27:38swear. But quality.
- 27:40Yeah. Make sure you have a Jack.
- 27:43Have an extra tire that's good, and have this stuff to change it
- 27:46and have the battery charger important.
- 27:50It's important I think. But that's like, you know that's
- 27:52kind of the boring stuff also that records.
- 27:56Bring them with you or have access, even if you don't have
- 27:59Wi-Fi. I love.
- 28:01And no, there's going to be some people that don't agree with me
- 28:04because I think that PetSmart has had some bad press about
- 28:10some places they're grooming has a Pitbull.
- 28:13They won't take Pitbull. Oh, I think it's actually it's
- 28:16their doggy daycare. Yeah.
- 28:18Oh, daycare, Okay, daycare. Because I was going to say
- 28:20because they actually gave me a discount on my pities because
- 28:23they have short hair, I don't know, like pity discount day.
- 28:26So Okay, just the daycare. So that upset a lot of people to
- 28:31the point where they won't even go to PetSmart for anything
- 28:35inside of PetSmart is Banfield. Now Banfield, I've been using,
- 28:40that's that's their veterinary. Thing there.
- 28:42So they have it in every single PetSmart.
- 28:44So now we're talking, we're not just talking your local that
- 28:47we're talking state to state to state.
- 28:51They also have multiple plans. It's not insurance but what it
- 28:55is is a preventative plans cool thing to have if you have dogs
- 28:59that don't really qualify for insurance.
- 29:03Seniors, I mean, they do qualify, but you, I've tried it
- 29:06and then it will not work out well for us.
- 29:09The other thing is they can transfer all of your dogs
- 29:12records. If I leave Arizona and I need
- 29:14some help and I'm in Idaho and I go to a Banfield there, they're
- 29:19more likely to get me in. They're really pretty good about
- 29:21it. It's going to be a free visit
- 29:23and they're going to have everything on record.
- 29:25So if I'm going to panic and I can't remember anything and I
- 29:27don't have my stuff, they have it.
- 29:29I kind of recommend maybe even just popping in there to get
- 29:33your dog established there so that that's an option for you if
- 29:38you want to travel a lot with your pet.
- 29:40And they have good hours. So might be something as an
- 29:43option for somebody as like a backup bet if it wasn't even
- 29:47what they wanted to use as a primary.
- 29:49That if they do travel a lot that they could get established
- 29:53in a Banfield. So that if they're in traveled
- 29:55Arizona to Pennsylvania and something happens, they can pop
- 29:59in and the records are all on file and it's ready to go.
- 30:03I don't think there's a state without a PetSmart, right?
- 30:06Yeah, and I. Don't know of anywhere.
- 30:08Does every PetSmart have a Banfield?
- 30:10I was trying to think. I am almost sure.
- 30:13I am almost positive, yeah. Wow.
- 30:16Yeah, and I've really had nothing but extremely positive.
- 30:21Great experiences with them. Fill your gas tank frequently.
- 30:27Yes. OK, this is a real this is a
- 30:31rule that I have when I travel with dogs.
- 30:33If you stop, everyone pees. Everyone gets out and stretches
- 30:39their legs and then we fill the gas tank.
- 30:43Everybody gets snacks like you do everything every time you.
- 30:46So you just get the whole gamut done and then you move on.
- 30:52Yeah, get it taken care of, I use.
- 30:54I'm someone who has habitually run out of gas.
- 30:57Not with dogs, but I have. We are kindred spirits.
- 31:01What do I do that I don't know, So when I travel with the dogs,
- 31:04I now look at my half tank mark. And I have a big I have a big
- 31:08van so it could it. You could probably be a little
- 31:10more lenient if you have a more efficient vehicle.
- 31:14I look at my half tank as fill it up just do it.
- 31:17So then if I'm a little late I'm.
- 31:20Still. Okay, yeah, I've got traps.
- 31:23So the last time I ran out of gas it was a dog trip with no
- 31:26dog. I can't believe I got so lucky.
- 31:29There's a stretch on the I-10 that is 60 miles long and I
- 31:32missed because a semi truck was in my way, missed the gas exit
- 31:36that I needed and I sure did run out of gas with a 16 year old in
- 31:40my car. That is not my child because I
- 31:42don't have those. And I had to hitchhike with her
- 31:45and explain to her how are we going to survive if when we
- 31:49hitchhike and get in someone's vehicle to drive us to this gas
- 31:52station? This is how you roll out of the
- 31:54car. I was like, don't wait until
- 31:56they go off on like side roads. And then you you just open that
- 31:59door and you just talk and roll. Girl, I was like, not this.
- 32:03And it's so stupid. I can't believe I did that.
- 32:05But yeah, I did. I missed.
- 32:07It did you have AAA then? No, but I do now.
- 32:11Do now I do. Now I got AAA.
- 32:15Fair enough. And that Wasn't that the last?
- 32:18Moment I You should have roadside assistance, everyone.
- 32:23And I remember a trip that I went on with.
- 32:25Luckily, it was just my best friend and I.
- 32:27And we started to leave town. And I was like, oh, I'll fill up
- 32:30before we leave town. And then we forgot.
- 32:33And so we're like probably 20 minutes outside of town.
- 32:37And I was like, hey, can you. I know there's a gas station up
- 32:40here. Can we just make sure that?
- 32:41I just want to make sure how far it is.
- 32:44I would say it was within like 50 miles.
- 32:47And my gas gauge said I had 85 miles.
- 32:51So plenty. And I said, I don't know why,
- 32:54but I'm just uncomfortable with this.
- 32:56Do you mind if we drive 20 minutes back to town and like,
- 33:00get gas and like, go again, I'm so sorry.
- 33:03She was like, it's fine, better safe than that gas station was
- 33:06closed because it was during the pandemic.
- 33:10It would have been 120 miles to the next gas station.
- 33:14That was That's a gut. That is a gut.
- 33:18So, Phillip, often I like this, yes.
- 33:22Yeah, My gosh. Yeah.
- 33:24And that gas station for me, I missed.
- 33:26I mean, I missed it like I couldn't get over to get off.
- 33:29I knew it was gonna be a problem.
- 33:30I didn't know it was gonna be that bad.
- 33:32Also. I did sure turn around, but.
- 33:35My miles said I had enough to make it to the gas station and
- 33:38we still put it out five miles early, so.
- 33:42Yeah, yeah. Never trust that because you
- 33:44never know when they're going to malfunction.
- 33:45So I do not. I don't like that thing I have.
- 33:49We don't want to push that too far, especially when we have 16
- 33:52year olds or dogs in the car. Yeah.
- 33:57See. I told her you can tell your
- 33:59mom. I'm not asking you to lie, but
- 34:01if you do tell her, she's probably never going to let you
- 34:04hang out with me again. So you make your decision.
- 34:06What you want to do, that's. So funny.
- 34:09But if your mom doesn't ask, maybe don't tell you.
- 34:13Girl, I'm not asking you to do anything that makes you
- 34:15uncomfortable, but that's. So funny.
- 34:19For safety, yeah, I do believe I have one more and I I think this
- 34:22is also very important. And this also goes with keeping
- 34:26your Airbnb's tidy and everything is having like a
- 34:29really nice first aid kit for your dogs.
- 34:32Yes. They do the dumbest shit while
- 34:35they're traveling. They all of a sudden start
- 34:37bleeding from a toenail, bleeding from a little, a
- 34:40little, you know, blister on their leg or and my Lord, I
- 34:45can't tell you how many. Mistakes I have made with the
- 34:49with like ruining sheets and stuff like that, just like
- 34:51they're always bleeding. I don't know what is the deal.
- 34:54They're not doing it here. As soon as we leave, somebody is
- 34:57bleeding from somewhere. So we have bandaids, we have
- 35:01wound care, cleansing stuff. So if you don't know my work
- 35:06background, I was. In healthcare for 22 years and
- 35:11an emergency room technician, I know a thing or two about wound
- 35:14care. It can honestly even be an empty
- 35:17syringe that you take. It's about volume and pressure,
- 35:21so if you have an open wound, you are going to want to port
- 35:26that water into it. I have a pressurized wound
- 35:30cleansing like almost like a gun.
- 35:32I just get it off Amazon. I have a splint roll in case
- 35:35somebody is broken something you know I hope that never happens
- 35:39cuz like but Ace wrap and Coban is a is another wrap that sticks
- 35:46on itself and you can do a compression to get things to
- 35:48stop bleeding. You want to do compression and
- 35:50like a ton of antibiotic ointment.
- 35:53My other favorite is the Quick stop.
- 35:57So like if you, yeah, if you cut a dog's nail too short, they can
- 36:02bleed from there quick and it will not stop.
- 36:06And unless you have this powder and you dip their toes in it.
- 36:11So I have elderly dogs that when they're getting all this
- 36:14exercise that they're not normally getting, they do
- 36:17sometimes drag their back feet a bit and so I have to have dog
- 36:23boots. Even if I don't think I'm
- 36:25needing them or expecting to need them.
- 36:27And the quick stop because I have had dogs walk so much and
- 36:32scrape their nails so much on the sidewalk that it's like a
- 36:35bloodbath that won't quit and I just pluck their paw right in
- 36:39there. Problem solved.
- 36:41Yeah, the first time that we ever stayed at an Airbnb with
- 36:45all of our dogs, Remy was still with us, who was our one pity,
- 36:49and she cut the inside of her cheek.
- 36:53On a marrow bone, they were out on the deck and all I knew was
- 36:57that there was blood everywhere and I didn't know where it was
- 36:59coming from. And you know how it is when you
- 37:01have multiple dogs. We had four dogs with us.
- 37:03So you got four dogs and you're like running around trying to
- 37:05pick up feet, look at tails, like who's eating, where's it
- 37:09coming from? And I'm like going through every
- 37:11dog, trying to figure it out. All of a sudden I realized it's
- 37:14the white on her mouth and her chest was red.
- 37:16And I'm like, what happened here?
- 37:18She had somehow cut inside her mouth and we had to figure out
- 37:24and Oh my gosh, when I realized how much blood was everywhere, I
- 37:29was like, I take towels and blankets when I go travel with
- 37:32dogs. So I was able to clean it up.
- 37:34But I agree, I mean, some kind of first aid situation and extra
- 37:38towels. You're never going to go wrong.
- 37:41Yeah, if you don't have it. That's when something goes down.
- 37:45For sure. So those are like my kind of
- 37:47more boring safety things. Safety is always good.
- 37:51I think the other thing that's important for me is the Airbnb
- 37:57cleanliness, per se. I truly feel that the reason I'm
- 38:01able to travel with so many dogs so often is because I have 42
- 38:08pristine ratings on Airbnb. Yep.
- 38:12Trust me, I have had incidences. So it comes down to
- 38:16communicating with your host and letting them know what happened.
- 38:20If something did break or something out of the ordinary
- 38:23happen, communicate with them right away.
- 38:26But I also do a ton of prep before I even let the dogs in
- 38:29and I'm talking. I have made this mistake so many
- 38:32times that I am done with it. Now it's the bedding because I
- 38:35they sleep in the bed. So even if they're not allowed
- 38:38or go on the furniture or sleep in the beds, I'm not stopping
- 38:41them. Like.
- 38:43Literally impossible. Yes, it is impossible.
- 38:47So if you think that you let your dogs on furniture and in
- 38:51bed at home and that you're going to stop them from doing it
- 38:54at a rental, you are incorrect. So the best thing that you can
- 38:59do is what I do is roll up every carpet, and if it's way too big
- 39:04to roll up then I cover it with something waterproof.
- 39:07And I found something really good on Amazon.
- 39:09And you know, I love this conversation, so I will make
- 39:13something on my Instagram that people can go to in the
- 39:16highlights that has literally everything we're talking about
- 39:18on here. So.
- 39:20That you can find the links to, purchase them yourself or see
- 39:24what I'm talking about. Kind of a waterproof blanket
- 39:26situation. I have a ton of them.
- 39:28I cover the entirety of the couch, the entirety of the rugs
- 39:32that I can't move. I take a photo of the Airbnb
- 39:36before I move anything because they want that place left how it
- 39:40came. They don't want it in shambles.
- 39:42I take every cushion and every pillow that I possibly can and I
- 39:46hide it somewhere up where they cannot reach it.
- 39:49I take the entire bed apart and I put all my own linens on it
- 39:53and Oh yeah, that's the one I highly recommend the most.
- 39:57That's the one I have regretted every single time when I didn't
- 40:01do a full bed change. Including comforter.
- 40:05Not only that, I would maybe take one of those waterproof.
- 40:08They're not even crunchy or anything.
- 40:09They literally feel like a yeah, I would put it under because my
- 40:14dog, some of them have hemangiomas on their legs and
- 40:18they will just burst and start bleeding in the middle of the
- 40:20night and it goes through and hits the mattress.
- 40:24I've had that happen multiple times.
- 40:26That's a problem. So.
- 40:28Just go in, wreck that whole place, put everything away.
- 40:31I look at look around and say if this was my home, what would I
- 40:35be concerned that these dogs would ruin.
- 40:37Even if you don't think your dogs pee inside, they might you
- 40:41don't know because there's a bunch of other dogs that have
- 40:43been there. If you see some nice vintage
- 40:46records down right in that pea stream area, move them.
- 40:51Just just do it. Everything that you could
- 40:53possibly think of. Get it up high away and.
- 40:56Put it all back when you are done and they won't.
- 40:59It won't even look like you were there.
- 41:00And I bring cleaning supplies as well.
- 41:02A Swiffer, a jar of countertop wipe and a sticky roll in case
- 41:08there's hair on somehow gone by. The furniture and stuff like
- 41:11that. Sticky roll that thing off and a
- 41:13little bit of a breeze. But don't overdo it.
- 41:15Y'all because. OK.
- 41:20Don't overdo it. We do not go to the links that
- 41:23you go, but we are also not traveling with seven dogs.
- 41:27So we travel with our two dogs often.
- 41:31We stay at Airbnb's. We also have excellent reviews.
- 41:35Now in our case, our dogs sleep in their crates because we're
- 41:39the devil. So we have travel crates that we
- 41:41take with us. So we don't have to worry about
- 41:43the linen situation on the bed. But I am right.
- 41:46There with you. When we get to the Airbnb, our
- 41:49dogs are in their crates, in the car, waiting.
- 41:52We unpack everything and then I take sheets that I have as my
- 41:57travel sheets. Everything that the sofas, all
- 42:00the chairs, everything gets covered.
- 42:02I look at the pillows, determine if I think they're a problem or
- 42:06not, make a decision. I also.
- 42:09Carry with me in my travel staff belly bands for because I have
- 42:13two boys and you can buy disposable belly bands or you
- 42:18can buy washable. I have both.
- 42:19You can buy them anywhere on Amazon anywhere for any size
- 42:23dog. I have those in case because one
- 42:27time we went to an Airbnb that was not the cleanest and
- 42:31definitely another dog had Pete there and my boy walked up and
- 42:36was like. And I was like, funny, I'm doing
- 42:40so belly bands, yes, it's something I have in case, but I
- 42:44do the exact same thing as you. I just go through and I'm like,
- 42:47OK, what do I need to do? I do not clean before I leave,
- 42:50but I absolutely make sure that it's not in excess.
- 42:55And like I said, I only have two dogs versus your seven.
- 42:58So I completely get where you're coming from with the steps
- 43:01you're doing. Yeah, the things I'm talking
- 43:03about are we're talking multiple dogs.
- 43:07We're talking. Crusty, dusty, bleeding,
- 43:11rolling, stinky senior dogs. They'll just be walking in a
- 43:16turd. Rolls out like you don't even
- 43:17know what's going to happen. Every day's an adventure and it
- 43:21was on my list. Although I do, I do call it Ween
- 43:24Slings. I call them Ween Slings.
- 43:26And for those of you that don't know what that is, a belly band
- 43:30or a Ween sling, as I point it, is a.
- 43:34Like it's a diaper for a boy dog?
- 43:37Yes. And it just simply goes around
- 43:39their wean. And you?
- 43:42I don't know. I only have the washable ones,
- 43:44so it. Has Velcro.
- 43:46Velcro at the top and so if they lift their leg and pee, they pee
- 43:50on themselves and the furniture. It works really well.
- 43:55And the disposable ones are, yeah, the disposable ones are
- 43:58basically like disposable diapers.
- 44:00They just have like the adhesive.
- 44:02It's the same exact idea, but belly band.
- 44:04Ones are amazing in a scenario like this.
- 44:08Yes, and if I didn't mention, if you don't know me and my pack, I
- 44:13have all, boys, all. I don't think I probably know
- 44:19that. Is that on purpose?
- 44:21I don't know what just happens and then the only female dog
- 44:25that I have had. Besides Fosters, since we
- 44:29started adopting seniors has been Mia only girl the only one.
- 44:33They have all been boys. We definitely bring the Ween
- 44:36slangs. You just don't know they're
- 44:38different at your home than they are when they travel.
- 44:42They might be better and they might be worse.
- 44:45So it's a prepare. Yeah, and I mean to pack a
- 44:49couple belly bands, it doesn't take any space.
- 44:51So I mean, you just stick those things in with your luggage and
- 44:55you're on your way. Yeah.
- 44:57And if you're lucky enough to have a washer and dryer in your
- 45:00Airbnb, even better. If you don't, you can still
- 45:04couple zip lock bag and save it for later.
- 45:07But yeah, another thing as far as the pee pee problems go,
- 45:13there is something that we tried out when we had we had some dogs
- 45:18that were so old that they couldn't necessarily.
- 45:22Make it outside. Either either our Airbnb did not
- 45:26have a yard, which I try not to do, but some places nobody has a
- 45:30yard, or you have to keep the door shut at night because
- 45:34there's wildlife in that area that could just creep in.
- 45:38I leave my door open here in Arizona.
- 45:41I'm not concerned about anybody creeping in here.
- 45:44But when you're up in the woods and there's bears and there's
- 45:48coyotes or there's like elk or the cats.
- 45:52Raccoons. Anything.
- 45:54Oh yeah, and the raccoons will come and snack on the dog food
- 45:56and stuff. You can't just leave your door
- 46:00open and some dogs cannot hold it all night.
- 46:03So I love this brand and I by the way, I'm I'm going to be
- 46:07plugging people on this and nobody's paying.
- 46:09Me, we're not. Sponsored.
- 46:10You know we're not sponsored hashtag, non sponsored ad.
- 46:15There is a company called Fresh Patch and they will ship you in
- 46:20the mail a tray and a fresh piece of sod grass.
- 46:26Get. Out.
- 46:29Crazy enough every time we used it here, which I've used it in
- 46:33my own bathroom when we had to quarantine dogs straight out of
- 46:36the shelter, when there was like, distemper outbreaks and
- 46:39stuff. And we've used it when like,
- 46:40great grip of Chevy got really old or whatever.
- 46:43They all like immediately use it.
- 46:45I did not have to train anyone. I'm not promising you that you
- 46:48wouldn't have to train your dog to use it, but immediately they
- 46:51were like cool grass. I'm going to pee on this.
- 46:54We travel with it. Take it with.
- 46:56That's amazing. Yeah, and and the real grass
- 47:00soaks up every cent of it, you know, until of course it's like
- 47:05well overused, but you can just Chuck it on your way home.
- 47:08It was an easy thing to travel with and it was a lifesaver at
- 47:12those types of places when we were trying to take 16 and 15
- 47:16year old dogs that couldn't hold their pee all night but we
- 47:19couldn't let them outside. Yeah, makes sense to me.
- 47:22That's an awesome tip. Oh, and let me do another plug
- 47:25too. As far as dog hair stuff goes,
- 47:28y'all I'm sure you know tooth and honey.
- 47:30Yeah, we. Love that?
- 47:32Oh yeah. So I for years shopped at
- 47:36PetSmart and stuff, trying to get clothing to fit the larger
- 47:41dogs. And the reason I was doing it at
- 47:43that point was really more to help them get adopted.
- 47:47Like to have something helped make them stick out?
- 47:50Yeah, later on. I really needed it because we
- 47:54were traveling to places where they were cold and I have all
- 47:57these big dogs and then I noticed that a big time perk was
- 48:02there is so much less dog hair. It's all coming off onto the
- 48:06shirt. In addition to that, Tooth and
- 48:09Honey has just come out with UV protective clothing.
- 48:15And frankenbeans. Yeah, my dog.
- 48:18Frankenbeans is the only one that really needs like sunscreen
- 48:24and UV protection. And yearly he has to have a man,
- 48:28she almost removed and everything.
- 48:29Of course he he's the one that wants to be out in the sun all
- 48:32day and he's got a pink belly and a white face.
- 48:35And yeah, I mean, it's beautiful.
- 48:39Not only does it keep the dog hair up.
- 48:41It protects him from the sun. And in addition to that, Franken
- 48:44Beans is the biggest blockhead of them all.
- 48:46And when I throw a shirt on him, people go from being unsure
- 48:51about him to like, can I pet your dog?
- 48:54Oh my. Gosh.
- 48:56I've ever seen unbelievable. It's like an.
- 48:59It's an immediate, like, welcoming, oh, this dog is in a
- 49:01pineapple shirt. He must be the greatest.
- 49:05Yeah, nobody. Lucy.
- 49:06Lucy has her tooth and honey Unicorn uh shirt.
- 49:10Yeah, with the little curdle neck.
- 49:12And literally people are like. Oh my God, your.
- 49:15Dog is the cutest thing I've ever seen.
- 49:17Tater has done without that. Yeah, it's like, and the curls
- 49:23and the curls. Lucy gets her curls, she says.
- 49:25Yeah, yeah. Tater did a photo shoot in the
- 49:29rubber ducky Tooth and Honey fits.
- 49:31So yes, we are big fans of Allie at Tooth and Honey.
- 49:34She's very generous as well and. She very much gives back to
- 49:38rescues, which we love, and shelters which we love.
- 49:41She just sponsored A spay and neutery clinic here in Arizona
- 49:45for the nonprofit that I Co founded.
- 49:47So Yep, she's amazing. Up I have such a collection, it
- 49:51is unbelievable. And every time one of my foster
- 49:54dogs gets adopted out, if they like shirts like I, I send them
- 49:58with their favorite shirt. Oh my goodness.
- 49:59So your friend here might have a little bit of an issue.
- 50:05You shoot the honey. You literally sponsored the
- 50:09entire spay and neuter clinic yourself, yeah?
- 50:12I'm talking the kind of customer service is insane.
- 50:16Yes, the one time I had a shirt and of course it was Frank.
- 50:20You guys, Frank. He is Frank the tank for a
- 50:23reason. He goes out and he rolls around
- 50:26in the shirt and like rips it. Day one, I couldn't believe it.
- 50:29I have never had that happen with.
- 50:31All of the other dogs and all of the history, he just shows up
- 50:34and he like he like muscled out, growed out in it and it rips
- 50:37like like Jersey Shore, like the Hulk.
- 50:40And I told her and I was not even complaining.
- 50:44I was just like I cannot believe this freaking dog and like 2
- 50:48days later in the mail I had a new shirt.
- 50:51Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 50:53And I will say I have bought probably 6 things from PetSmart
- 50:57in different places and Amazon trying to get something that
- 51:00fit. I finally just was like, I have
- 51:02spent three times as much. Yes.
- 51:04And I should have just gone to tooth and honey originally and
- 51:07it's her tooth and honey stuff that fits.
- 51:10And I mean, she still hates being dressed up, but.
- 51:13But then she looks adorable in Unicorn.
- 51:14So. She does.
- 51:16Do you have more tips, Tara? I do have a tip for as we were
- 51:20speaking before on potty breaks and sometimes stopping at
- 51:25friends houses, this is the first time this recent trip
- 51:28where I had to travel with a lot of the dogs on my own.
- 51:32So my husband came with me and I call him Mclovin, you guys.
- 51:35So if you hear me say Mclovin, he's not a dog.
- 51:38That's my husband. So Mclovin had to like fly back
- 51:42home to go to work. So the majority of the trip I
- 51:45was actually by myself with four dogs.
- 51:48Which was trying to say the least.
- 51:50I started having a little panic on the way from San Francisco
- 51:55down to Venice Beach, because Venice Beach, the parking can be
- 51:58a little shady, and I knew they could hold their pee.
- 52:01But I was also afraid if they all had to go to the bathroom
- 52:04really bad, that they were going to, like, rush me out of the
- 52:06door of the van and like, I was going to drop somebody's leash
- 52:09and it was going to be chaos. And I was going to be panicking
- 52:12about finding a spot because I knew by then they would all have
- 52:15to go. So what I did was I found a
- 52:19sniff spot. Are you?
- 52:20Yes, we love Sniff Spot. I found a sniff spot can find
- 52:25them on social media but they have an app Okay.
- 52:29So you go on their app and you get yourself a little account
- 52:32and anywhere that you might be traveling.
- 52:34There are people that are renting out their yards and you
- 52:37can make sure before you rent it that it is like if you have a
- 52:41dog reactive dog like myself you want to make sure.
- 52:45There's not other dogs or cats or something that are visible.
- 52:50Visible, Yeah, so they'll give you the rundown.
- 52:53They'll tell you if it's enclosed, not enclosed.
- 52:55How high are the fences? You find the right place for
- 52:58you. But we were able to pull over
- 53:01and three miles only off of the freeway.
- 53:03And I was able to use someone's totally private 6 foot wall
- 53:07backyard and take all four of the dogs and let them do their
- 53:11biz and take off. And that cost me 25 bucks.
- 53:16Which was? Worth it to me, Yeah.
- 53:19So that was something I had been thinking about doing on on trips
- 53:22since I found out about sniff spot.
- 53:24And this was the first time that I actually did it.
- 53:27And I thought it was a good investment because if you've
- 53:30ever tried. Just take seven dogs out of 1
- 53:33vehicle at one time at a gas station or to rest stop.
- 53:38Pandemonium. It is pandemonium and I will be
- 53:42the first to tell you that my dogs are not the most well
- 53:46behaved per se. Like I couldn't tell them hey
- 53:48sit and stay. And the reason being is I adopt
- 53:51them when they're older. So like.
- 53:55I guess I could try to train them, but like what?
- 53:57How realistic is that? You're just giving them their
- 53:59best life, Tara. Yeah.
- 54:00We're doing a constant turnover, so my faults are yes, I would
- 54:05open the door and all seven dogs pile out at the same time.
- 54:08And pandemonium, yes. And I have had instances where I
- 54:12was a little terrified that I was going to lose grip on one of
- 54:17them or whatever. Sniffspot would solve all of
- 54:20those problems for you, I believe, Yeah.
- 54:23So that's great. Good use of it.
- 54:25Yeah, we have some locally too. Yeah, it is.
- 54:28It's an app that's across the country and, you know, popular.
- 54:32It's getting more popular. And I really hope that at the
- 54:35church here, I live in a church so I have that side yard, you
- 54:39know that we did the bond fires. I feel like that could be a
- 54:42sniff spot, but I need absolutely 1st and it would be
- 54:45so fun. And I was thinking too, even
- 54:48traveling in Arizona, Heather and I ran into this where we
- 54:52stopped at a gas station. We started early in the morning.
- 54:55It was not hot when we started, but by the time we got back to
- 54:58Phoenix I needed to stop for gas and my dog could use a bathroom
- 55:02break and she's an old lady. And we pulled off to the side
- 55:06but it was already 100 degrees out and so I tried to find like
- 55:10the coolest spot but there were no cool spots and she wouldn't
- 55:14go to the bathroom because the sand was too hot.
- 55:16So I carried her back and then we still had like 2 1/2 hours
- 55:20left to get warm. And she was like whining and
- 55:24pacing. And I was like, there's not that
- 55:26you hide can do. We were like where we should
- 55:29have had the booties with us, but you don't.
- 55:31It's hard to think about every single little thing.
- 55:35Yeah, yeah, I know. I try to bring the boots now
- 55:38too, but honestly, I had and not everybody else not that long
- 55:41ago. Also that.
- 55:43You're totally right. Not everybody aware.
- 55:46Yeah, absolutely. I did have that happen to me
- 55:48recently, and it was Elvis and he did go out and he did potty.
- 55:53But I was like running as fast as I could to the spot that
- 55:57wasn't the concrete. I I felt so bad.
- 56:00You know, you have those moments where you know you're just doing
- 56:03your best. You're going to mess up, man.
- 56:06If you're Yep, if you do anything with your dogs, you're
- 56:08going to mess things up. It's okay, but I've made so many
- 56:13mistakes. That's why I was so excited to
- 56:16talk to you too, and hopefully help other people too that are
- 56:20nervous about doing it. Traveling.
- 56:22Because I know other people have reached out to me and they told
- 56:24me they did start traveling with their dogs because of watching
- 56:27us and that it really changed their lives as well.
- 56:30And then they would send me family photos out in these
- 56:33awesome places and it really was.
- 56:37Something that became not just important to me, but like
- 56:40important for me to share what a big deal it is to people and
- 56:45their dogs to be able to do that, you know?
- 56:47So I love this. I do have just one more little
- 56:52small list if you're interested. Bring it.
- 56:55OK, I know I'm like hitting your, I'm hitting like an hour,
- 56:58over an hour mark here. It's fine, don't worry.
- 57:03I would assume that some people are going to want to do mostly
- 57:07camping type of stuff with their dogs, like not.
- 57:09Go out, but you go for it. Right, right.
- 57:12I've done so. I've done hotels rarely, mostly
- 57:16in super dog friendly places like San Diego.
- 57:19They'll have super dog friendly motels and you can walk almost
- 57:22right to Dog Beach. I mostly do Airbnbs, but there's
- 57:25cons to that because. You are in someone's home and
- 57:28you are having, if you have my type of crew, the risk is high
- 57:34that something is going to break or get ruined or there's a lot
- 57:38of work involved in that. Some people, I think a lot of
- 57:41people are mostly ones that are going to want to take their dogs
- 57:45out to camping type of spots, woods, whatever, and with a dog
- 57:49reactive dog, I found recently a really cool.
- 57:56Site that is set up almost exactly like Airbnb, but it is
- 58:01for outdoor spaces and it is called Hip camp.
- 58:04Like I'm hip, you know, like HIPHIP camp.
- 58:09And we can link it. We can link it in the show notes
- 58:12too. Yeah, OK.
- 58:13Yeah, perfect. Hip camp.
- 58:16They let you rent private. Also public camping type of
- 58:21spots, but. If you look for a private one on
- 58:25someone's property, it'll let you know what you will see
- 58:27there. If there's other campers there,
- 58:30we've rented multiple places where we never saw another human
- 58:34being, and you get the camping experience without having people
- 58:39running into your campsite, dogs off leash running into your
- 58:41campsite, none of that stress. Really affordable.
- 58:45Way more affordable than Airbnb. We usually just sleep in our
- 58:49van, but lots of them. You can pitch a tent or some of
- 58:52them. They even have tiny homes or
- 58:54something that you can stay in. A lot of them have private river
- 58:58or lake access. I am telling you, if you have a
- 59:04dog that is needing extra space and can't have dogs running up
- 59:10on them, look into hip camp. And reach out to a host and ask
- 59:14them. Hey I have a I have a dog.
- 59:17Are there going to be other ones here?
- 59:18We have found so many it's amazing but I would highly
- 59:21recommend for camping type of situations light up collars.
- 59:27There's. Blinky, blinky, light up tags,
- 59:30long leads, bear spray or Mace if you need it.
- 59:34Because listen, I have never in my life Mace a dog and nor do I
- 59:39want to, but if. It comes down to there's going
- 59:44to be a brawl situation. I will do what I have to do and
- 59:48that's the best thing I can come up with.
- 59:50That would be temporary, not permanent, you know, to deal
- 59:54with that situation. So I carry it on me.
- 59:57Zip line tie outs, work for some dogs.
- 1:00:00It didn't really work for my bougie bunch, but I thought it
- 1:00:03was my mind. It was like a great idea, baby
- 1:00:06gates, and you can make those into like a giant pen.
- 1:00:10And if you live in Arizona, hit up Nellis auction.
- 1:00:15Nellis auction has all these returns from like Amazon or big
- 1:00:19warehouses and they auction them off weekly.
- 1:00:23You have to go pick them up within a week.
- 1:00:24If you win, have the winning bid.
- 1:00:26They do it every day. The bids end around 6:00 or 7:00
- 1:00:30PM. I have gotten so much amazing
- 1:00:33stuff from Nellis Auction for dirt cheap and baby gates.
- 1:00:37I'm a dozen. I think I got 20 baby gates for
- 1:00:39like $10 and was able to make a giant camp area to enclose them
- 1:00:46since my zip line didn't work. And babes life jackets.
- 1:00:52They're also on Nellis auction, but you don't know what you're
- 1:00:54dealing with. There's dogs are dummies too.
- 1:00:57They think they're going to go be like a professional Michael
- 1:00:59Phelps over here and then they're like down to the bottom
- 1:01:03like. No, I don't swim.
- 1:01:06And if you have multiple dogs like me, then you can't keep
- 1:01:09track of everybody, so you might as well just throw everybody in
- 1:01:11a life jacket. Not to mention it's cute.
- 1:01:15Anyhow, it's good for photos. Grab yourself and nice dog treat
- 1:01:20Fanny pack in case you have to entice your dog back, in case
- 1:01:24they somehow wander off or get off of their lead or something
- 1:01:28happens and you have to entice them.
- 1:01:29There are Fanny packs with really nice lining that you can
- 1:01:33put. High quality treats in there.
- 1:01:35It'll hold your dog poop bags and it'll hold your phone and
- 1:01:38it'll hold your chapstick or whatever you need out there and
- 1:01:42just throw that on your hip. And yeah, that's my suggestion
- 1:01:47for camping, including Bento bowls.
- 1:01:52They have dog food Bento bowls. So when I'm out there, if I have
- 1:01:56all these dog bowls with their jowl, slime and everything on
- 1:01:59them, the bugs start to crawl in.
- 1:02:02Bento bowls. You can just snap each dog bowl
- 1:02:05together, and they have those on Amazon.
- 1:02:07As well. And listen, I've never used this
- 1:02:10in my life, but have you ever seen the Porcupine jackets for
- 1:02:15small dogs? I have a friend.
- 1:02:17I have a friend who has one for her Chihuahua.
- 1:02:21Oh my God. Yeah, I I might have to get that
- 1:02:24if I take Bubs. If you take Bubs.
- 1:02:27Yeah. Yeah, they're pretty cool.
- 1:02:28So they have like spikes sticking up like a porcupine.
- 1:02:31So an owl or a hawk is not going to come down and just swoop
- 1:02:34them. Have you not seen them?
- 1:02:35Christy, no, I'm saying yes, Yes, I.
- 1:02:38Really want to take OKI won't camp because that's not a thing
- 1:02:42for me. But also, I might have to set
- 1:02:45that aside to take Tiago out into the wilderness somewhere,
- 1:02:50because this dog loves to be in the wilderness like nothing
- 1:02:53else, and that just sounds dreamy.
- 1:02:57To me. Yeah.
- 1:02:58Amazing I will say. If you are going to take long
- 1:03:03lines out for your dogs 100%, suggest you practice before you
- 1:03:09get in the woods because that can be a bit of a mess.
- 1:03:16With multiple dogs, it's worse. Yeah, and it honestly, it's just
- 1:03:21getting used to it and practicing practice makes
- 1:03:25perfect. But even now, I often have Lucy
- 1:03:28on a long line and I know sometimes Heather will have her
- 1:03:31dog on a long line, Tiago or Tater.
- 1:03:33And even now, even with practice, I still end up crossed
- 1:03:37with Heather and like around legs.
- 1:03:39And so just practice so you know what your dog is like on the
- 1:03:43line. Even if you find somewhere that.
- 1:03:47I did find a couple of places where I rented a private a
- 1:03:50private Airbnb or hip camp where we had a piece of river that the
- 1:03:55dogs could really be off leash. I rarely rarely let my dogs off
- 1:04:00leash and it took me a couple days to even be comfortable to
- 1:04:03do it, but no one was there and they owned 8 acres and on the
- 1:04:07corner. So once I felt comfortable I did
- 1:04:09let them off leash. But it's really nice to have the
- 1:04:12lines with you. You don't know.
- 1:04:14I mean, you know, you can't guarantee what's going to
- 1:04:17happen, so. I'm a huge fan of Biothane long
- 1:04:21lines, which you can get pretty much anywhere.
- 1:04:23I love them because if they get dirty and disgusting, you can
- 1:04:26just wash them off. They're super easy.
- 1:04:28They're waterproof. The 10 foot Biothane line I
- 1:04:31think I've had for six years now and it's just indestructible.
- 1:04:35Now I have 2:30 foots and they're in bright colors so
- 1:04:38they're easy to see if your dog's trailing it.
- 1:04:40Tiago in certain instances is allowed to be off leash tater.
- 1:04:44Would never be allowed because he can get spooked and he'll
- 1:04:47run. But there are scenarios where
- 1:04:50you need to use that long line. And I I just love the bio thing
- 1:04:54because it's easy to take in any situation, no matter what
- 1:04:58happens or the and it's not going to be ruined or damaged.
- 1:05:02And it's easier when they get tangled to untangle the bio
- 1:05:05thing than it is to do with a standard leash.
- 1:05:09Yeah, for sure. I just got one of those leashes,
- 1:05:12so I know exactly what you're talking about.
- 1:05:13Yeah, And I usually have multiple things on them.
- 1:05:17I'm not a fan of harnesses for some reason.
- 1:05:20I'm a slip lead Gale. But on these kinds of trips
- 1:05:23where we're out in the woods, I do a harness with a loop.
- 1:05:27I don't know what they're called.
- 1:05:29You just clip it on it. There's no leash.
- 1:05:31It's a handle almost. So a clip on handle.
- 1:05:34So if we're doing. Off leash per se, then at least
- 1:05:38I have a handle. Same if they're getting.
- 1:05:41If they're slipping or they're getting into some chaos or
- 1:05:45something, then I have their regular size leash for walking
- 1:05:48them back and then I have the long line.
- 1:05:51For other scenarios but. Sounds very A.
- 1:05:54Lot with me. Sounds very similar to the setup
- 1:05:56that Christy and I use. Tiago.
- 1:05:59If it's somewhere where we're going that he might be off
- 1:06:01leash, he has a basic harness, It's like not to hold him back.
- 1:06:04It's it's a very simple roughwear harness just to be
- 1:06:08able to clip his long line too if I need to connect him to me
- 1:06:11for some reason. And then he also always wears
- 1:06:14his collar. And then I have his regular
- 1:06:16standard leash in my Fanny pack to be able to clip him if he
- 1:06:20needs to be close to me for some reason.
- 1:06:21Reason or I need to swap them out?
- 1:06:23So yeah, all the different things to be able to have all
- 1:06:28the tools. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:06:30Every scenario she is ready. The backpack full of things, and
- 1:06:35I've never used it before, but I did think about this when I knew
- 1:06:39you would be speaking with me. I thought maybe even a bell.
- 1:06:43I don't know. Tia you.
- 1:06:44Have a lot of dogs out in the you do use a bell.
- 1:06:47He has two Jingle Bells on his. It's the harness he wears for
- 1:06:52off leash time. He has bells on and I've
- 1:06:55honestly just been using it. Even if I take him on long line
- 1:06:58anywhere there we're in wilderness because we go up to
- 1:07:01pine and things and there's elk around.
- 1:07:03It just makes me feel better and I feel like it's being
- 1:07:06respectful of the wildlife at the same time.
- 1:07:08Hey, we're coming, you know, if you want to move on, go ahead,
- 1:07:12run away. Run away.
- 1:07:15And so, yeah, it's like, hey, we're coming.
- 1:07:18So I actually put the bells on there last year and I never took
- 1:07:21them off. So yes.
- 1:07:24That's cool. I'm glad to hear you use that
- 1:07:26because it came to mind, but I've never done it.
- 1:07:29Another thing that came to mind that I've never used, but
- 1:07:32probably should, is GPS. There's companies that do GPS
- 1:07:37callers now, so. And there's different benefits
- 1:07:42and to G PS:. Obviously when you have seven
- 1:07:45dogs, it's could be cost prohibitive and.
- 1:07:49Yeah, I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:07:50Yeah, but there are absolutely excellent GPS collars out there.
- 1:07:54And I know Christy and I have friends who have dogs that wear
- 1:07:57GPS collars even at home because they've had a dog that they lost
- 1:08:01and kind of traumatized from that.
- 1:08:03So yeah, it's definitely possibilities.
- 1:08:07Yeah. And the nice thing is nowadays
- 1:08:09they have GPS that you can have a handheld device that it
- 1:08:13reports back to you immediately. Yeah.
- 1:08:15So it's not like you have to go and log in or you have to wait
- 1:08:19for somebody to find your dog. Yeah, you're like, why is my dog
- 1:08:22not coming back? Ohh, it's around the corner.
- 1:08:25Ohh, look, it found an elk body or something.
- 1:08:30Yeah. Yeah, great.
- 1:08:31And I don't get super concerned about it because I.
- 1:08:34Very, very rarely, like I said, have my dogs off leash.
- 1:08:37I will do. I will never ruin somebody
- 1:08:40else's day by having one of my dogs off leash because they have
- 1:08:44a reactive dog. I will be very sure I'm in a
- 1:08:47very secure area before I ever do anything like that.
- 1:08:51But of course, yeah, it's like deer goes by and one of your
- 1:08:54dogs takes off and you just don't know.
- 1:08:57So I think it's not a bad thing to think about.
- 1:09:00My older guys, I can catch most of them, but not all of them.
- 1:09:06Safety. First, safety first, so if you
- 1:09:08can outrun your dog, don't worry.
- 1:09:10About a GPS, right? Right.
- 1:09:14Exactly. So one additional thing.
- 1:09:17I don't have like a lot of more tips, but if you want me to end
- 1:09:22this off on. I think Christy has something.
- 1:09:26I was just going to add one thing to that list too,
- 1:09:28depending on where you're going and how hot it is.
- 1:09:31I like to also bring a cooling vest because my dog is the worst
- 1:09:36of both worlds. She overheats so easy, but she
- 1:09:40also gets really cold, so I have to bring both her little pajamas
- 1:09:44and a cooling vest no matter where we go.
- 1:09:47Something that that just made me think about because I do sports
- 1:09:51with my dogs and dog sport peoples, we're all fanatical
- 1:09:54about keeping our vehicles. Cool, because a lot of times
- 1:09:56we'll create our dogs at the events in our car or near our
- 1:10:00car. You can buy Illuminets on
- 1:10:03Amazon. They're not expensive, and you
- 1:10:06can get an Illuminet that will cover your entire vehicle if you
- 1:10:09need to. So maybe you're in a space
- 1:10:10that's really sunny and you want to keep your car cool while you
- 1:10:15go and take your dogs down to the river or whatever, what,
- 1:10:18whatever you might have going on.
- 1:10:20Or you just have to sit your car in a really sunny spot.
- 1:10:22Those Illuminets are an amazing thing to have.
- 1:10:25I also use the Ryobi battery operated fans from Home Depot
- 1:10:30and multiple times a year they will do a crazy good deal where
- 1:10:35it's you buy one and you get a second fan and three battery
- 1:10:38packs for free or some craziness.
- 1:10:40And they also have misting fans by Ryobi and they all have the
- 1:10:43interchangeable batteries. And then something else I do for
- 1:10:46Tiago because he runs hot is a nice cooling pad in his because
- 1:10:52he's created in the car, in his crate in the.
- 1:10:55Car. So I kind of do an all
- 1:10:57combination thing to keep him as cool as possible.
- 1:11:00I'm so happy you said all of that.
- 1:11:02And will you please link it all? Yes, because I was just having
- 1:11:07this exact discussion with someone several days ago and she
- 1:11:11was talking about people who do exactly what we're talking about
- 1:11:16and all of the things you were just saying.
- 1:11:18And I was like, please let me know because I am struggling all
- 1:11:21the time with this. I even.
- 1:11:24I left my dogs for three hours in the van with it running so
- 1:11:29that I could help her out with networking some dogs on my way
- 1:11:32home. I was honestly a little shocked.
- 1:11:35We were at Venice Beach and it was sweater weather.
- 1:11:39I got to her house only one hour away.
- 1:11:42And it was way hotter than I thought.
- 1:11:44And even with the van running and every curtain in my van up
- 1:11:47and something blocking the windshield, it was just cool
- 1:11:50enough for them in there. She told me exactly what you're
- 1:11:54saying. She just did not know the names.
- 1:11:56So, like, I'm just excited that you know what it is because I
- 1:11:59was very interested. In yeah, the illuminates are
- 1:12:02awesome and. The other thing a lot of dogs
- 1:12:05bark people will do is there are apps now that you can put a
- 1:12:09thermometer in your car and the app is connected to your phone
- 1:12:12and you can set it to an alert depending on the temperature and
- 1:12:16and it'll alert to your phone as long as you're within Wi-Fi or
- 1:12:20have some sort of signal and it'll tell your phone if it gets
- 1:12:24if your car gets to a certain temperature.
- 1:12:26Obviously nothing is foolproof. We we know everybody, nothing is
- 1:12:30foolproof, but if you're in a situation where you're right by
- 1:12:33your car but you're not. In it and you want something to
- 1:12:36make sure that everybody's good and you have the car running and
- 1:12:39you're keeping it cool. That's another thing that you
- 1:12:41can do to just be a double check on the temperature.
- 1:12:45So there's a lot of stuff out there that is super, super good
- 1:12:48to use. And going back to being stranded
- 1:12:52on a long desert highway. Cool wind in the air, You know
- 1:12:56what I'm saying? If you were in that scenario.
- 1:13:00Those things would be extremely helpful to keep your dogs alive
- 1:13:04while you're waiting for assistance. 1. 100 because as
- 1:13:07soon as that air conditioning stops, we are talking
- 1:13:10temperatures of I would say 130 in the car.
- 1:13:14What was it today was 107, I think today.
- 1:13:17So you're at 100, you're well over 130.
- 1:13:20Oh yeah, instant death and and when you have vulnerable dogs,
- 1:13:25like seeing your dogs. Or sick dogs or puppies or
- 1:13:28whatever. They don't even do well in
- 1:13:31bougier conditions. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:38I try to avoid going to the vet or acupuncture or any of the
- 1:13:42other things that I do for the dogs in the summer because they
- 1:13:45don't do well just on the short trip there, they're not well,
- 1:13:50so. Having those things with you
- 1:13:53could truly save their life if you were in some kind of Rd.
- 1:13:56emergency and you had to wait for help.
- 1:13:58Yeah, I'm so glad you know what all of those things are, cuz I
- 1:14:02was actually really wondering about.
- 1:14:04This yeah, I will send you all of the things.
- 1:14:07Beautiful I. Love.
- 1:14:09What else did you have, Christy? Did we hit all the things?
- 1:14:13I think we hit everything. Yes, right.
- 1:14:16We are amazing. Would you guys like me to end
- 1:14:19with one story And this story has been told on Instagram, but.
- 1:14:23You and however you like to end Tara.
- 1:14:26It's it's the most crazy story ever.
- 1:14:29OK. Let me add to you.
- 1:14:31And of course, like I said, I've had mishaps for sure.
- 1:14:34Traveling with dogs. I already told you we lost Bubs.
- 1:14:37I should mention on this subject that one time Winston did get
- 1:14:41overheated because the Airbnb did not have air conditioning.
- 1:14:45And it came through in California and we actually had
- 1:14:48to leave a day early and stay in a friend's garage.
- 1:14:53I also did not have cooling vest.
- 1:14:55And I took the tooth and honey clothes and covered it in water
- 1:14:58and threw it in the freezer and then put it on all my dog.
- 1:15:02But Winston was my small dog at the time and he did not do quite
- 1:15:07as well. And he did vomit for like a
- 1:15:08whole day, like it was not good. Yeah, so I've definitely had.
- 1:15:13Things but the most craziest travel story I have for you.
- 1:15:18Did you guys hear about the van almost getting stolen?
- 1:15:21No. No O K0K 0K.
- 1:15:23This is so good. So I visited Oakland on my way
- 1:15:28up to take them to the redwoods or whatever.
- 1:15:30My brother lives in Oakland so I got an Airbnb there for only two
- 1:15:37nights to hang out and then he was going to continue on the
- 1:15:41rest of the trip. All seven dogs were with me.
- 1:15:44Oh boy. I get an Airbnb in Oakland and
- 1:15:47my brother said it's a little sketch over there, right?
- 1:15:50And to park, it's like getting worse every year.
- 1:15:53And he said try and park in the parking garage.
- 1:15:56Well, my van was just a little too tall for a city parking
- 1:15:59garage, but the street was empty.
- 1:16:02It was like nothing going on. No noise anywhere, no sirens, no
- 1:16:07people. And there was a parking spot
- 1:16:10directly in front of the Airbnb that I rented.
- 1:16:14At this time, I did not have my own van.
- 1:16:17I had the van I rented every time we went on vacation for the
- 1:16:22dogs was from Arizona Canine Rescue AZ Canine.
- 1:16:27So they have a travel van to get their dogs to vet appointments
- 1:16:30up in Sedona. So I would rent it out for my
- 1:16:33trips. It benefited both of us.
- 1:16:36And yeah, we parked it at about. 1:00 AM directly 2 feet outside
- 1:16:42of the front door. You would think it would be
- 1:16:44safe. We knew it was the little sketch
- 1:16:46over there, so we pulled every single thing out of the van
- 1:16:49except a cooler. This cooler I had gotten off of
- 1:16:53Nellis auction and it was the first time we used it.
- 1:16:57And you can plug it into the like cigarette lighter input
- 1:17:01thing. I don't know, I'm old.
- 1:17:02So they still had cigarette lighter carjack thing or
- 1:17:07whatever. And it would charge from the car
- 1:17:09and it would actually act like a refrigerator.
- 1:17:12So I know we had both said out loud we should probably not
- 1:17:17forget to unplug this thing because it might keep draining
- 1:17:22the battery while we're not using the vehicle.
- 1:17:24We don't know if it automatically would shut off or
- 1:17:26if it would keep going. So we wake up in the morning and
- 1:17:30I pile all the dogs into the car to go out to lunch and I have a
- 1:17:36little. Trouble putting the key in to
- 1:17:39start the car and the car won't start.
- 1:17:41And Mclovin, my husband starts throwing a little fit and he
- 1:17:45says Oh my gosh, we are so dumb, we left the cooler in here
- 1:17:49plugged in and the battery is dead.
- 1:17:51I can't believe it. I can't believe this the one
- 1:17:54thing I forgot. And then I'm looking around and
- 1:17:56look, something's really weird. Why was it so hard to turn the
- 1:17:59key? And then I look down and I see a
- 1:18:02crack lighter, all burnt and crispy on the seat.
- 1:18:05And I was like, that's not my lighter.
- 1:18:07And then I went around the side of the car and the whole keyhole
- 1:18:11is completely removed. And during the night, somebody
- 1:18:16oh, and there was also the weird ticket on the car that I just
- 1:18:18threw out. So I was like, I don't know what
- 1:18:20this means. It's a call here.
- 1:18:22I don't even know. I didn't know what it meant.
- 1:18:24But it all made sense all of a sudden, what I realized.
- 1:18:28Is that somebody during the night saw that van.
- 1:18:31They wanted to live in it and take it.
- 1:18:34They busted the whole keyhole out.
- 1:18:38They tried to start the car like Hotwire it and it didn't work
- 1:18:44because we left the cooler and then the battery was dead and I
- 1:18:50died right there. I was like.
- 1:18:53This is the best. Open mistake we've ever made in
- 1:18:56our life we would have done. This.
- 1:18:59And we would have had that. That wasn't even our van.
- 1:19:02We would have lost the van. We would have had seven dogs, 14
- 1:19:06hours. Stranded.
- 1:19:08Stranded. I mean, it could have been the
- 1:19:11worst nightmare ever. And the only reason the van
- 1:19:13didn't get stolen is because we left the freaking color black
- 1:19:16guy. I love it, that is.
- 1:19:22Hilarious story. Ever.
- 1:19:25And now I'm a little more careful about where I park or
- 1:19:27stay, but I'm also, I also got one of those, the club.
- 1:19:30I have a club now, so. We have just supported 100
- 1:19:34different businesses. I know.
- 1:19:36Can somebody sponsor us? What's up?
- 1:19:38Hey guys, we're all taking sponsorship.
- 1:19:42That's amazing. I love that story.
- 1:19:46That's like, the best story to end on.
- 1:19:48Ever. I did share it as it was
- 1:19:50happening. Yeah.
- 1:19:51I had to share it again because that's hilarious.
- 1:19:54Unreal. I still think about it almost
- 1:19:56every day. I can understand why that's a
- 1:20:00struck of good luck and bad luck all rolled up into one.
- 1:20:03Yeah, yeah. Absolutely minimal damage to the
- 1:20:07van and maximal good stuff on your life.
- 1:20:11Like good karma came through. Hooked us right up on that one.
- 1:20:15Because I don't know what I would have done.
- 1:20:17I really don't. I had no backup plan for that
- 1:20:20one guys. I so appreciate you being
- 1:20:25willing to come on and talk with us and spend this time with us
- 1:20:29because your experiences are awesome and your tips, I know,
- 1:20:33are going to be so incredible for people who want to travel
- 1:20:36with their dogs. And I love that you're already
- 1:20:38inspiring people to get out with their dogs, so that's amazing.
- 1:20:42Yeah, I hope this really does inspire people.
- 1:20:45If I could get one thing out of this, it would be just if one
- 1:20:48person went and thought, let me give it a shot.
- 1:20:51Because the things that your dogs can do are amazing.
- 1:20:56Don't set yourself up in a bubble of what they may or may
- 1:20:59not like or what they can and can't do.
- 1:21:01Just take notes as it's happening.
- 1:21:03You know, let them lead and you will be on an adventure that you
- 1:21:10never thought possible. Absolutely.
- 1:21:14Yeah, so if. People want to find you.
- 1:21:17Where can they find you at? So really, I have multiple
- 1:21:21social medias, but if you really want to find me, do Instagram
- 1:21:26and it's at Tara's Fosters, AZ and my name is spelled Tara.
- 1:21:32Add the S fosters as in Foster Dogs AZ as in Arizona.
- 1:21:39And I am pretty responsive there.
- 1:21:42I have Facebook and TikTok and all that too.
- 1:21:44But I am on Instagram all the time.
- 1:21:46And if you don't have Instagram and you really want to ask me a
- 1:21:50question or get any input from me or whatever, you can e-mail
- 1:21:54me. It's Tara's Fosters az@yahoo.com
- 1:21:58and I'm down to talk dog all day long so I'll talk shop.
- 1:22:03Here is an amazing resource. So yeah, we'll tag you on
- 1:22:07Instagram when we drop the episode as well, so people don't
- 1:22:10see that, Yeah. Great.
- 1:22:12Thank you everything that. We mentioned that I know today I
- 1:22:15will put into a highlight reel over the next day so that you
- 1:22:19can find links on Amazon or find you know fresh patch or tooth
- 1:22:23and honey or hip camp or whatever.
- 1:22:25And I know you're going to link the ones that you mentioned for
- 1:22:28keeping your. Vehicle.
- 1:22:29Cool. Because I'm very interested in
- 1:22:31that. I'll.
- 1:22:31Put all of them in the show notes so then people have them
- 1:22:34right with the episode and they can have it all right there
- 1:22:37together, which would be awesome.
- 1:22:39Yeah, I have a few great things off of Amazon too that I didn't
- 1:22:43even mention. Just like a spillproof dog bowl
- 1:22:46or things that have helped really, that I haven't tossed to
- 1:22:49the side after the first trip that I use again and again and
- 1:22:51again. They're so helpful.
- 1:22:53So I'll send you everything for sure.
- 1:22:56All right. So I think we'll leave it there.
- 1:23:00We are dropping new episodes every other Thursday.
