Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Dealing With Periods of Dissipation and Distraction in the Spiritual Sadhana
Transcript
- 0:00Spiritual aspirants tend to have periods of concentration,
- 0:04intense experiences, positive forward movement centered around
- 0:09our deepest aspirations, only to find that after some time the
- 0:14energy withdraws or they sink back into old habits or
- 0:20comfortable patterns of the past.
- 0:23They may look for activities that do not take serious
- 0:26concentration and they act as distractions or which dissipate
- 0:32the energy. In today's world, scrolling
- 0:36social media or watching mindless video reels can be
- 0:41added to traditional forms of distraction.
- 0:45There is a truth behind this alternation between spiritual
- 0:48focus and periods of dissipation.
- 0:52The human instrument is not normally capable of sustained
- 0:55concentration and focus over long periods of time.
- 1:01Until the mind, the vital and the physical being have been
- 1:04trained for endurance and provided with the core ability
- 1:08to hold a focus, they will naturally back off from time to
- 1:13time. These periods of apparent
- 1:17retrogression may cause the seeker to experience feelings of
- 1:21guilt or fear of incapacity, when in fact they are natural
- 1:26periods of recovery and assimilation in the long and
- 1:31arduous process of the spiritual sadhna and the transformation of
- 1:36the nature. They also act as signs of where
- 1:41effort can be fruitfully expended to create a new
- 1:44development or expansion of the spiritual force.
- 1:49They highlight immediate areas of restriction or weakness that
- 1:53can become the spur towards a new leap forward.
- 1:58Srioro Bindu observes quote an occasional sinking of the
- 2:03consciousness. Happens to everybody.
- 2:06The causes are various. Some touch from outside,
- 2:10something not yet changed or not sufficiently changed in the
- 2:13vital, especially the lower vital, some inertia or obscurity
- 2:19rising up from the physical parts of the nature.
- 2:23When it comes, remain quiet, open yourself to the Mother and
- 2:28call back the true conditions and aspire for a clear and
- 2:33undisturbed discrimination, showing you from within yourself
- 2:38the cause of the thing that needs to be set right.
