Transcript
- 0:01Speaker: To be cheerful and productive as a busy mom, you
- 0:06do not need a perfect plan.
- 0:09Just give up on that ideal right now.
- 0:12Your plan's not gonna be perfect because no plan ever does happen perfectly,
- 0:19and they aren't really meant to.
- 0:21You don't need a complete task list, and you don't need an ideal
- 0:27fantasy version of yourself.
- 0:30What we all need every day is the answer to the question: what do I do next?
- 0:38Where do I start?
- 0:40Because starting is the hardest part, and that is exactly why we need a daily card.
- 0:46And today I wanna walk you through exactly what goes on a daily card to keep us
- 0:52productive and moving forward day by day
- 0:56Hi, I'm Misty Winkler, and you found the Christian homemaking
- 0:59podcast, Simply Convivial.
- 1:02Convivial means enjoying life together, and that's the kind of feeling
- 1:08that we want our homes to evoke.
- 1:11But it takes work and effort and time to make that happen,
- 1:16to build that kind of life.
- 1:19And so we talk about those issues about home and family life management
- 1:24here on this podcast, because I want you to be a cheerful,
- 1:29competent, confident Christian mom
- 1:34And I know that the daily card works, not just for me, but for hundreds.
- 1:40At this point, we're probably over 1,000 other women doing this daily
- 1:46card method, which I call the three by three daily card method.
- 1:52It really is that flexible and doable, no matter what you
- 1:57have going on in your life.
- 1:58So today, I'm going to give you a tour of my card.
- 2:03I will do my best to describe what's on the card with words, but if you
- 2:07are listening to the audio only on YouTube or on the audio only podcast,
- 2:13you might wanna head over to the video for this one, because I am going to
- 2:17be zooming in on each piece of this card and showing you how it works.
- 2:25So grab a basket of laundry to fold and let's dig in
- 2:30Now, the first thing that I love about the daily card, which I started
- 2:35off the doing on an index card like this one, and eventually I moved to a
- 2:45Post-it note, which is even smaller.
- 2:48But the small format was an essential ingredient to making this work.
- 2:56I made weekly checklists.
- 2:58I made my own weekly planner.
- 3:00I've tried a number of different planners over the years, but the thing
- 3:07that makes the biggest difference is doing my daily card, the very limited,
- 3:13very visually limited daily card.
- 3:17And the smallness is an important factor because the smallness is
- 3:22a visible reminder to me that my day is a limited container.
- 3:27I am not gonna get to all the things that I would like to do.
- 3:31I never have, never will.
- 3:34My to-do list is always going to be longer than the time I have available.
- 3:40That's life.
- 3:41I've accepted it, and I've learned to cope and manage and still be satisfied at the
- 3:48end of the day by what I did choose to do.
- 3:52Because the daily card helps me make decisions and choose
- 3:57the most important things.
- 4:00And that's why I would like you to try this daily card method, especially if
- 4:05you've been feeling overwhelmed, if you can't keep track of what you need to do.
- 4:11If you are ending the day disappointed in yourself, you need the daily card.
- 4:18So let's unpack the different sections of this three by three daily card
- 4:25Speaker 2: All right, so here we have the daily card for today.
- 4:29Now, the first thing I realized that was way more helpful than I thought it
- 4:34would be in writing out a daily card is writing out the date every day.
- 4:39It is so easy to lose track of time and to not realize what day it is or
- 4:45how far into the month that we are.
- 4:49So actually writing out the date every day has been a huge help and benefit.
- 4:57Then you will see here in this section, these are my top three
- 5:02things that I'm doing today.
- 5:03So right now, I am recording this daily card series, so that is
- 5:08happening right now, and I have already finished slides for the
- 5:13workshop that's coming up on Monday.
- 5:15And if you can register, if it hasn't happened, if that link will be in
- 5:20the description, and if it's already happened, then that's actually
- 5:23gonna be the next episode to play.
- 5:25So look forward to that.
- 5:26That is also on the daily card.
- 5:29And WOW, that stands for work of the week, which I picked up from a
- 5:34friend, and that just means the things.
- 5:37I have a little procedure list for Mondays on getting my week set up,
- 5:42and so that is my work of the week.
- 5:44I need to get that done.
- 5:46Uh, but I can't get that done until after this series is recorded, so
- 5:52we are heading into the afternoon, the late-ish afternoon, but
- 5:56we're making steady progress.
- 5:57And this is the summer, so homeschooling is not on the list.
- 6:01If it was a homeschool day, then that would be one of these things
- 6:05because homeschooling takes a significant amount of time.
- 6:09So the top three aren't necessarily the things that I want to get done or
- 6:16they're, they're not my wishful thinking.
- 6:18They are the things that actually are going to take a significant
- 6:22amount of time in the day.
- 6:24I put those down there.
- 6:27Of course, there was also the time when I had to put smiling as one
- 6:31of my top three, and I'm gonna be telling that story in the workshop.
- 6:35So stay tuned for more on that if you haven't heard that story already.
- 6:39Sometimes smiling is the most important thing and belongs on your daily card.
- 6:43But we've got a place to put that if that's true.
- 6:47So then, next, the next section here on this three by three daily card.
- 6:53So just having the three here is the basics.
- 6:58This is what we do every day that makes the biggest difference, that
- 7:02helps us establish progress day over day, and start fresh every day.
- 7:09But we all know that there are more than three things to do, and
- 7:13most of us are working on building better intentional home habits.
- 7:18So we're going to acknowledge that on our daily card, and keep
- 7:22track of it, because those little things add up and matter so much.
- 7:27But it's the little things that we tend to discount, and neglect, and put off,
- 7:34and not count as getting something done.
- 7:37And we, we need to stop not counting them, but to really identify them and
- 7:43acknowledge that we've done important things by putting it on our list.
- 7:48So I'm gonna grab a pen here, because I have done See if I can
- 7:57do this while holding one-handed.
- 7:59I have read my Bible today.
- 8:01I have had two of my waters today, and I have smiled and had cheerful
- 8:09conversation with my kids today.
- 8:12All right.
- 8:13So then what we have here, this is the routines section, and this
- 8:20is the personal habits section.
- 8:22You can call it self-care.
- 8:24You can call it personal habits.
- 8:27You can call it what you need to but every day we want to read our
- 8:32Bible, drink our water, and smile if we're going to stay the kind of
- 8:38happy, wise women that we want to be.
- 8:41So the routines, AM fifteen means a morning routine that's only fifteen
- 8:47minutes, a afternoon routine that is only fifteen minutes, and transformation ten.
- 8:54Sometimes I write TT, and sometimes I write T and the number ten.
- 8:59But this is an extra ten-minute task that is something that is
- 9:04bothering me, that needs to happen, that I might procrastinate on.
- 9:07I write TT or T ten and then write out what that thing is today.
- 9:13This is an alternative to a deep cleaning plan that it's surprisingly effective.
- 9:21Then the PM fifteen is the evening after dinner routine that only takes fifteen
- 9:25minutes, but the fifteen minutes is key.
- 9:30Then the personal habits, read Bible, water, drink water, smile.
- 9:35And then on mine, this is a little bit extra, but I had extra room,
- 9:40and so I do have a d- daily zone, so I spend fifteen to twenty minutes
- 9:44in a different zone every day.
- 9:46Monday is kitchen day.
- 9:47So I just reminded myself of that.
- 9:50And then I have a little motto here that is my current focus, "Smile and start."
- 9:58So another surprising benefit of keeping a small written plan is that you have
- 10:06something to write things down with.
- 10:09So one little hack is on the other side to keep a running list.
- 10:15So this is the day's main focus, but as I moved through the day, I
- 10:20thought of different things that I should do, might need to do, and so
- 10:25I just jotted them down on the back.
- 10:27Now, the top one here is wash the dishes in the utility sink, and as I was jotting
- 10:32things down, I realized, you know what?
- 10:34That is actually my transformation 10 for the day, and so I moved it over here.
- 10:39But the process of writing down a few extra things that need to happen
- 10:43soon-ish or that I can't forget, having a place to write them down, even if
- 10:49the T's aren't crossed or the, you know, all the I's dotted, is so helpful
- 10:54to just get it off of your brain.
- 10:57So keeping something that you can jot notes to self on of any kind, that you
- 11:03can give yourself a motto where you can just track those small things that
- 11:09make a difference is a game changer.
- 11:13All right.
- 11:15Speaker 3: And now we're back.
- 11:16So the win with a daily card isn't that you have a day that goes as planned.
- 11:26The win is that you have a visible reminder with you of what to do next,
- 11:33of where to put your time, and then when something happens that derails your day or
- 11:39changes your priorities, you can see it.
- 11:43You know it.
- 11:44You can say, "You know what?
- 11:46My kids started puking, so I am not going to be recording today," or whatever it is.
- 11:52You could say, "You know what?
- 11:53What I did really was more important than what I thought I was going
- 11:57to do at the beginning of the day.
- 11:59So I'm totally fine with that, and maybe I'm even going to cross that off and put
- 12:05what I am actually doing today on here."
- 12:08Because this is a low stakes card.
- 12:10This is garbage at the end of the day.
- 12:13We're going to start fresh every single day with a brand-new card.
- 12:18And that kind of fresh start every day, continuing to iterate the small things,
- 12:24is where you will find progress in your home and in your attitude, and how you
- 12:30can learn how to end your day satisfied.
- 12:35We go into detail in making our daily cards work for us in everyone's particular
- 12:42situation inside Convivial Circle.
- 12:45In fact, in July, we're doing the daily card challenge where all the
- 12:50conversation for the month with prizes at the end of the month for people who
- 12:55have done 20 index cards, 20 daily cards.
- 12:58Might be an index card, might be a post-it, whatever
- 13:02People who do that will get stickers, and encouragement, and extra videos.
- 13:07And we'll be sharing and talking about how each one of us is making it work
- 13:13in our own particular contexts, which helps us think out of the box, and be
- 13:17encouraged with one another's small wins.
- 13:22It helps to have people to talk shop with, to have like-minded moms working
- 13:27on cultivating the same habits and attentiveness in our homes and homemaking,
- 13:33and that's what Convivial Circle provides.
- 13:36So if you want support in making your daily cards, then Convivial Circle is
- 13:43for you, especially right now if you're watching this in June when our daily card
- 13:50challenge is about to happen in July.
- 13:52But actually year-round, the daily card is the key piece that we keep coming
- 13:59back to, that our mentor members and the community manager will help you
- 14:06will point you back to, so that you can build the reps
- 14:09of consistency that matters.
- 14:13It matters in the little things.
- 14:16Not in big projects or building your ideal life, but in learning
- 14:22how to pick the next best thing and then following through on that.
- 14:28That's what makes all the difference, and that's what we
