- 2:07special thank you to listener Dave for sending me a new microphone with which I
- 2:14am recording today's episode. The recording that quality I think will be a little
- 2:19different, but hopefully better overall. This has got a lot more options as
- 2:23a microphone. It's going to take a little bit for me to get used
- 2:27to, but there's a lot that I really like about this, particularly my
- 2:32ability to plug in earbuds and hear myself, which has really helped me kind
- 2:38of get some of my levels set for this recording. So thanks so much
- 2:42Dave, really to appreciate that, and I hope this mic will work out
- 2:46in the long term. Now it's time for today's episode of The Saint.
- 2:51The original aired eight November the fifth, nineteen fifty and the title Miss Gogby's
- 2:57School for Girls. The Adventures of the Saint starring Vincent Price. The Saint,
- 3:38based on characters created by Leslie Charmers and known to millions from books,
- 3:43magazines, and motion pictures. The robin Hood of Modern Crime now comes transcribed
- 3:46to radio, starring Hollywood's brilliant and talented actor Vincent Price as the Saint.
- 4:00Oh Hello, good morning. This Simon Templar the Saint. Good morning.
- 4:10I'll tell him when he comes in for a Saint. You sleep pretty late.
- 4:13It's because of my Hey. Who is this? You know? Miles
- 4:16Banning? Miles Banning? Yeah, I know him slightly. I got a
- 4:20message for him. You know his daughter, Plice, Yeah, a cute
- 4:25little girl with braces on her teeth and pigtails. What about it? She's
- 4:28almost eighteen now, no more pigtails. But nobody misses him, you know
- 4:31what I mean? Look, my friend, if you have a message for
- 4:33Banning, why not give it to him yourself. He gets excited. I
- 4:38want you to break it to him gently. It'll cost him two hundred grand
- 4:42to get his daughter back. Get her back? Well, who's got it?
- 4:46I have and I want the money tonight. Tell him at his place
- 4:48on the bay, his place on the bay. And I suppose I tell
- 4:53him that if he doesn't pay, you'll never see his daughter again. He'll
- 4:56see her, all right, he'll see you, but he'll wish he had
- 5:00goodbye. Say hey, wait a minute, my friend. Hello, Hello,
- 5:06hello, your party has hung up? Sir, do you have his
- 5:10number? Not yet, operator, But I'm going to try real hard.
- 5:21Go right in, mister Temple. Mister Banning has been waiting since you call.
- 5:25Oh, thank you, Templar, Come in, come in, Oh
- 5:30thank you, mister Banning. I'm sorry we had to meet again. And
- 5:34he said, have you heard from him? She's all right, she is
- 5:38all right. Well, I think there's very little doubt about it, mister
- 5:41Banning. And until he gets the money he would how much? How much
- 5:44does he want? Two hundred thousand dollars by tonight? All right, he
- 5:48shall have it. You can raise that amount in such a short time he's
- 5:51got release. Yes, tell me when did it happen? Two days ago?
- 5:57From our school, from missus Godby's. I finished school. I've been
- 6:00waiting to hear ever since. You've notified the police. The police, what
- 6:04have they to do with it? But after all in a forcible kidnapping with
- 6:08the man threatening violent napping violence. My dear templar, this man isn't threatening
- 6:13to kill Felice. He's threatening to marry her. Marry yes, I see,
- 6:18and she's willing to marry him. Unfortunately she is. That's the tragic
- 6:23part of it, you see, she's only seventeen. Then you must know
- 6:28the man well as well as you ever know any man who takes care of
- 6:30your horses. I employed him as a groom. His name is Hendron,
- 6:33Tony Hendron. And you're willing to pay two hundred thousand dollars to keep this
- 6:38marriage from happening. Oh more more, Felice has a million dollar trust fund
- 6:42from her mother. She'll be an heiress at twenty one. I'll pay anything
- 6:46he wants. The money at your plate on the bay tonight. Do you
- 6:49have any idea why he didn't call you direct? I'm afraid i'd have detectives
- 6:54here checking the call, I imagine, but she didn't. But why not?
- 6:58The police are pretty good at finding why. I couldn't take a chance
- 7:00on this thing getting in the paper's templar, you can see that, of
- 7:03course, and I might try picking up his trail before tonight. It's possible,
- 7:09not probable, but possible. Well, I think my first start will
- 7:14be Miss Godby's school. Mister Banning. I'll let you know if I find
- 7:17anything, and try to relax. Things will work out, all right.
- 7:21Relax. If you had a daughter who was trying to throw a life away,
- 7:26you couldn't. Of course I couldn't. I promise you one thing,
- 7:29mister Banning. I'll do my best to find him. I know you will.
- 7:45I beg your pardon. Oh you frighten me. I'm terribly sorry.
- 7:51Could you tell me where to find Miss Godby. I am Miss godbib Oh,
- 7:56how fascinating that is. I am head of Miss Godby. And while
- 8:01I'm really mister Godby, still there's always been a Miss god Bay at the
- 8:03head of Miss Godby, so in a sense, I am Miss Godby.
- 8:07Uh. Yes, you see. The school was founded by my great aunt
- 8:11Hazel god By. My office is right down the hall here, and ever
- 8:15since then it's been a tradition with us god Bys too. What girls,
- 8:20girls, you ladies please, we'll come right in here, sir. Thank
- 8:26you, honestly, mister Temples Simon Templess, Honestly, mister Templar. There
- 8:33are times when I'm almost glad Great Aunt Hazel is not alive today. God,
- 8:37big girls today are are well? You saw it was a little frightening,
- 8:43flattering, but rightening. That's exactly it. Frightening the word for the
- 8:48modern generation, frightening. I was just visiting one of our most interesting and
- 8:52traditional classes, how to enter a drawing room? And what do you think
- 8:56I found there? Apathy, absolute under guys, mister Godby, I'm here
- 9:03about Felice banning a case in point, a young girl from one of the
- 9:07most socially prominent families in the city, and she runs away with a jockey
- 9:13a groom. Worse if this ever gets into the papers, Mister Templer,
- 9:18I'm afraid that Missus Godby's is finished. That is the word finished. Felice
- 9:24did leave here then with Hendry, certainly I told her father, so any
- 9:28ideas about whether two of them might have gone, mister Temper, Yes,
- 9:33I withdraw the question. Oh you'll have to excuse me, Missus Templer.
- 9:37There are just a few classes I insist on teaching myself, and this is
- 9:41one of them. Fine needlework, hmm. If you care to sit in
- 9:46a thank you I will miss mister God until then, until later. Huh
- 10:01would you like to have words with me? That's a fascinating question. I
- 10:07am not like those adolescents down the hall exhibitionists. Are you saying, yes?
- 10:15I am? Then you're here about Felie. You know Felise, she's
- 10:18my roommate and dearest friends. Oh, please sit down, missus Morrison,
- 10:22Barbara Morrison, Well, I'd like very much to have words with you about
- 10:26Felice. Well, I've made a deep study of her. She's a psychological
- 10:31wreck. I see. Did she talk to you about a man named Tony
- 10:35Hendron? She thought she couldn't talk to me about men because she was seventeen.
- 10:41It's a very uninteresting age. Really, I much prefer twenty one myself.
- 10:46You do, actually, Well, isn't that a coincidence? I'm twenty
- 10:50one? Yeah, naturally, Barbara. Do you have a theory about why
- 10:54Felice would run away with Tony Hendron? Well, she'd never marry him.
- 10:58Of course, you'll never marry anyone for any particular reason. Father fixation roughly
- 11:05the reverse of the more familiar ed of the situation with a male child.
- 11:09Her life is completely subordinate to that of the beloved all powerful father. Oh
- 11:13why, I don't know. Her father's a horrible mess. Then you don't
- 11:18think she'd marry Hendron. It's not as simple as that. She might see
- 11:22a father symbol in him. Or this might be a temporary rejection of authority,
- 11:26or it might be loved love. How utterly naive? Oh, I
- 11:33just thought of something. Would you be interested in some pictures? What kind
- 11:37of pictures? Some snaps of Tony Hendron? Yes, I would be interested.
- 11:41When Felice left Eye took them for safe keeping, Mother Godby would have
- 11:46had a fit if he'd found them. I keep them in my purse constance.
- 11:50Here they are. Uh, this is Tony Hendron. Yes, isn't
- 11:56he handsome? I think he looks a lot like Gregory. Yes, it's
- 12:01in a wilted sort of way. Here's another one of him, taken at
- 12:05the beach. Police couldn't grown up that much? Oh that isn't police with
- 12:09him in the picture? Oh? Oh, who is it? I don't
- 12:13know? And I certainly admire Tony's taste in brunettes. Barbrae. I can't
- 12:18thank you enough for your help. Feel free to call on me at any
- 12:20time. Thank you tell me how are you so sure of your diagnosis of
- 12:26pelice? Have you studied psychoanalysis? Studied it, mister Templar. My family
- 12:31sent me to an analyst at the age of three. Well, but now
- 12:35you're completely normal, of course, except that now I've taken up dianetics all
- 12:41me to straighten out my friends. Of course. Well, thank you and
- 12:43goodbye, mary Worth. Did you learn anything, Templar, anything? No,
- 12:56mister Banning, I learned practically nothing at the school other than what you
- 13:00told me. You have the money, I'm getting it, yes, and
- 13:03you're still determined to pay off Hendron. I'd do anything to keep my daughter
- 13:07from marrying a blackmailer like Hendron. Yes, I agree. It doesn't strike
- 13:11me as being the ideal son in law. Well, i'll see you here
- 13:16later tonight, Denny A Templar. I know I'm imposing on you if if
- 13:20you'd rather not come tonight, I want to. Men like Hendron have been
- 13:24known to pull a double cross In the meantime, I'll keep on looking,
- 13:28thank you, Templar. I'll ring for Edward to show you. Oh,
- 13:31don't bother, I can find my way out. I bought a small road
- 13:33map on my way in, Yes, it is a large house, isn't
- 13:37it very well? I'll see you tonight, right. Oh, oh,
- 13:52I'm terribly sorry. That's perfectly all right. It was byfle I'm glad,
- 13:56glad that we've met. Ask why because I have something belonging to you?
- 14:05A photograph? A photograph. Yes, you look quite beautiful in a bathing
- 14:11sir. Oh, and the man with you looked very much like Gregory Peck.
- 14:16What do you think we ought to do about it? I would suggest
- 14:20talking it over over a drink. That seems basically so, what'll it be?
- 14:39Anne Scotch overse mind Simon too, Johnny Walker over Ice Waiter? About
- 14:45that photograph? Simon? Was there really a photograph? Or can we go
- 14:48on to other things? There really was? Unfortunately? Do you know someone
- 14:52named Tony hendry Nann? Perhaps I'd better look at the photograph first? And
- 14:58here you are? Thank you? Yes, yes, I know Tony.
- 15:03It's an old picture, though I hope you haven't changed. I don't think
- 15:05so. Two O, thank you. Well, here's to the eternal there
- 15:11it is the things that will never change. What was it you wanted to
- 15:16know about Tony? He's run off with a million dollars? Are you surprised,
- 15:20not if it was wearing his skirt. Do you know Miles Banning?
- 15:24I know him, but it surprised you that he's paying two hundred thousand dollars
- 15:26for hernda not to marry his daughter. It wouldn't surprise me. Now you
- 15:31mind if I asked a question about you, Anne. It's about time,
- 15:35Sara. How do you know Hendrin and Banning? I was this former Missus
- 15:39Banning's nurse. This private nursing pay well enough for mink and being a wife
- 15:45does and in this case I earned it. And the present missus Bannings.
- 15:48Oh, he didn't tell me about you. He wouldn't. You're investigating police
- 15:54and Tony for him. In the same chance, I have an appointment.
- 15:58I'm afraid I have to go, but you haven't finished your call me anytime
- 16:00you be like investigating anything? Please anything? I want to see you again.
- 16:07You're very attractive. Goodbye. Indeed, the lady leavin you wish to
- 16:14order anything to eat? Of course? This is my lunch hour, waiter,
- 16:18bring me another straight scotch ten o'clock. I wonder if our friend Hendrin
- 16:34will come tonight after all, mister Benn, he'll come with two hundred thousand
- 16:38in cash waiting for him who wouldn't come. You're still determined to give it
- 16:41to him? What else can I do? I think I'll go out and
- 16:45have a look around, all right, gentle, I'll keep an eye on
- 16:48the driveway. If anyone comes, I'll be close by. Try and get
- 16:52a little rest. I won't be wrong. Thank blew me old place.
- 17:10I wonder what Anne does for amusement out here? Who's there? Thought I
- 17:18heard something? I'm sorry I stepped on your kiddy, but you should be
- 17:26more careful. You can see better out here than I can. In fact,
- 17:29I can't see anything. I might as well head back for that hit.
- 17:48My poor beat on caved in aching head. Oh he was stuck with
- 17:56me. Thanks Kitty, Hey who hit me? Yeah? I never aspired
- 18:02to be the robin Hood of modern crime. Giddy. It's very hard on
- 18:04the skull. I wonder how long I was out? Ten fifteen? I
- 18:11better get back to crime is picking up? Kitt Come on, three shots
- 18:23and not one of them missed. Who are you? I'm Simon templar your
- 18:30police. Yes, you better go inside. I'm afraid he is. You're
- 18:38the same, don't you? Yes? Promise me you'll find who killed him.
- 18:42I'll do my best. Police. You loved him very much, Tony.
- 18:48I hated him all right, everybody here. I won't keep you along,
- 19:06mister Banning, just long enough to get your statement. Mister Temple,
- 19:08you sat on the phone that you found the body. Yes, that's right.
- 19:11It's quite simple, Lieutenant Lieutenant Thompson, isn't it. Yes, sir,
- 19:15well, my wife and I and my daughter were upstairs when we heard
- 19:18the shots. I came down and found a safe open, a large sum
- 19:22of cash missing. How large? Two hundred thousand dollars. Templer then came
- 19:26in and told me a man had been shot, and I found it was
- 19:29a man named Hendryn, who used to work for me. Apparently he and
- 19:33the confederate opened the safe, quarreled over the money, and Hendron got shot.
- 19:37Let's check with you, missus Benning. That's all I know about it.
- 19:40Yes, So you see, there's no point in carrying on this discussion
- 19:42any further. Just a minute, mister Banning. I appreciate your motives,
- 19:45but after all, a man's been killed here tonight. The lieutenant is entitled
- 19:49to a more complete explanation than that. Very well, but I'd like to
- 19:55ask if my daughter could go to a room. She's had a bad shock.
- 19:59Certainly, mister Banning, go on, Phillie. I'll be up to
- 20:00see you soon, dear. All right, what I told you, Lieutenant,
- 20:10was not quite all, though in principle thoroughly correct. The truth is
- 20:15my daughter had runoff with Hendry. I agreed to pay him two hundred thousand
- 20:22to bring her back. You saw him tonight, mister Banning. He came
- 20:26here. Yes, I paid him the money and he left. I never
- 20:30saw him again. Mister Templar, were you with mister Banning when he paid
- 20:33him the money. I'm sorry to say that I was unconscious at the time.
- 20:37Lieutenant. I hardly need to point out how desirous I am of having
- 20:41my daughter's name kept out of him. Oh. I'll do my best,
- 20:44mister Banning. I'm a father myself. Thank you. I'll be grateful.
- 20:48I'll be very grateful. And now could we go to our rooms? I'm
- 20:52afraid I see. Of course, I'm sorry I kept you this long.
- 20:56I understand that's your job. Come here, good night, gentlemen. You
- 21:00won't mind if we look around missus Panning, of course not. Please ring
- 21:03if you want anything, certainly, missus Panning, don't you worry about us?
- 21:07No, don't worry about us, missus Banning. Good night, good
- 21:10night. Well Lieutenant, Oh, I don't doubt that Hendrin did have someone
- 21:18else in with him on his black male scheme and then he knocked him off.
- 21:22It looks pretty simple. And if you believe that, you'll look pretty
- 21:25simple. What do you mean the killer is a mysterious intruder seen by no
- 21:30one. It's logical. Lord Temper Banning is a big man in this town.
- 21:36Now. How long it takes to work up from pounding a beat to
- 21:37a detective lieutenant? Fifteen years? How long it takes to go back to
- 21:41a beat fifteen minutes? So I'm buying his story until I find out it's
- 21:48wrong. Fair enough, Lieutenant, Can I go along with the right?
- 21:51Oh? Sure, sure, we'll start checking tomorrow. Meet me back here
- 21:52at ten in the morning. Good. I've got a few questions I'd like
- 21:56to ask Miss Banning. A couple of things. I'd like to ask missus
- 21:59band Danny to get a grippa and yourself. Remember you're a family mayor.
- 22:14I am most happy to answer any questions, and so is my daughter,
- 22:18aren't you, dear? Yes, father, Missus Banning will be down soon.
- 22:22Unfortunately, Lieutenant missus Banning is indisposed this morning. Oh, however,
- 22:26she knows nothing of the affair. Could we ask Felice a few questions alone,
- 22:30mister Banning? Pelise, no, Father, I'd rather you stayed with
- 22:33me very well, Felice. Did you come back to the house with Hendron
- 22:38last night? And was there anyone with him? But Pelice came back early
- 22:42in the evening. She was still obstinate about marrying Henron, so I still
- 22:47had to deal with him. You were in love with miss Hendron, Miss
- 22:48Banning, yes, so she was just a minute. Now, let Felice
- 22:52answer, mister Banning. Were you in love with Hendron? Felice? Father
- 22:55told you I was, and you were if he told you I was anything?
- 22:59Further, gentlemen, do you know where Hendron lived? Felice? Go
- 23:03ahead, dear, in a rooming house three twelve Main Street. Oh,
- 23:07now we're getting somewhere. Let's go, Templar. I hope you find Hendron's
- 23:11confederate, Lieutenant I. I hope you find him, and if you recover
- 23:15the money, there'll be a liberal reward. In it for you. Thank
- 23:18you, mister Banning. We'll be in touch. Good day, mister Banning,
- 23:22felice, goodbye, gentlemen, good templar. Dear that might be in
- 23:30for a big reward if we recover the two hundred grand Lieutenant, stick to
- 23:33the Irish sweet steaks. The odds are much more in your favor. Hendren,
- 23:48Sure I know him? Owers me six weeks rent the dirty easy,
- 23:52dear mother, speak not ill of the dead. He's dead, very got
- 23:55himself shot last night. Shot, he said, just my love that I
- 24:00lost that way. There's month. Oh well, you'll find months like that.
- 24:03Put a ceiling on rents. Why don't put a ceiling on how many
- 24:07dead beat tenants can get shot in a month. I want to write my
- 24:11congressman, if I could write, choke back your tears for a moment.
- 24:14Dear heart and gentle person, what did you know about Hendry? Did he
- 24:18have any friends him who'd be a friend of his? That dirty? No
- 24:22good? Yes, now let's start again. Nothing you can tell us about
- 24:26him at all, nothing except he came to me two months ago saying he
- 24:30was coming into ten thousand dollars, wanted to borrow a ten spot did you
- 24:34lend it to him? Two weeks ago we heard a story he was going
- 24:38to get two hundred thousand instead of ten, had said he'd pay me double
- 24:42my back rent. What did you do? Locked his trunk in the basement?
- 24:47That's what much good it did? Mean? Nothing in it but hair
- 24:51oil and mustache wax. Tell me what am I gonna do with mustache wax?
- 24:56Well you might wax your mustang? What w I searched his room?
- 25:00But I say, Lieutenant, have you got a date for to night?
- 25:03Why? Because I want to make one for you business or pleasure. The
- 25:07successful man is the man who combines both. Be at my apartment around nine,
- 25:11But yeah, may need you. What kind of girls do you go
- 25:15out with? A good policeman, lieutenant is theoretically able to cope with any
- 25:18foreseeable emergence. Good evening, Simon? Okay, so glad you could come?
- 25:37So glad you called me? Why candlelight and chanting? How excited?
- 25:42Yeah? Take your rap? Please? You're so tall, Simon? Can
- 25:48you unbend? I can try? Thank you? And you dropped my wraps?
- 25:59Dropped it right on the don't you dare pick it up? I wasn't
- 26:02thinking of picking it up. I wasn't thinking about it at all. What
- 26:04were you thinking of? Simon? Tell me? On, tell her,
- 26:10Simon, tell her. Oh, good evening, Danny, Miles, did
- 26:15you follow me again? Don't you ever get tired? I get more tired
- 26:18than I can tell you. That's why it's not going to happen again.
- 26:21Anne, I mean it. You're a pretty pitiful object. I'm warning you,
- 26:25and put that kind of way. Danny. You'd never shoot her?
- 26:27No, no, I couldn't. But that doesn't apply to you, Templar.
- 26:32You're too smart anyway. I was against involving you in this from the
- 26:36beginning. You'll remember I argued against it, and you'll remember that you're talking
- 26:40too much. Now, don't be ridiculous. He's got us figure it out
- 26:42anyway. Why do you think he asked you here? If it wasn't a
- 26:45Trappist? Why do you think I don't want you to say it? Stand
- 26:51away from easy, Benny. You haven't got a chance. No, no,
- 26:56you're the one who hasn't a chance. You're the one now it gives
- 26:57us reparte. Put down the gun, Miles, So let's get out of
- 27:00here. No, no, no, we can't. We can't leave him
- 27:03here. He turned us in. Keep me out of this place. You
- 27:07see, I can't leave him here. You both gang up against me.
- 27:11I'm afraid it's pretty much up with you anyway, mister Banning. You killed
- 27:15Hendron, didn't you? What if I did? He was double crossing me.
- 27:18The two of them were he and Anne. Yes, you would have
- 27:22give him ten thousand for his part in it, and he and Anne decided
- 27:25to take the whole two hundred thousand money from Felice's estate. I had to
- 27:29take the money from her estate and would have left me, she said,
- 27:32So she kept golding me. So you rigged up this blackmail story so you'd
- 27:36have an excuse to take the money later, if you were called to account
- 27:40as trustee of the estate or trust fund, I would be a witness that
- 27:42the money was spent on behalf of police neat. I didn't know until last
- 27:48night. Anne was really plenty to go away with him. I shot him.
- 27:49I had to. I had to keep her. You better give me
- 27:52the gun, Banning. No, No, everything will be all right.
- 27:56You're the only one who knows it'll be all right, and you'll see be
- 28:00all right. Now, stand away from the police around their way, mister
- 28:03Benny. In fact, the door is opening now, No you don't.
- 28:07That's an old trick, templar. And I'm not falling for it. I'm
- 28:10not God my arm give me that gun, Banning, pop it, drop
- 28:18it said, oh, thanks for dropping in. Lieutenant's hurt and and I
- 28:25didn't mean it. I didn't get away from her, Banning let me look.
- 28:30Flesh will bad, but not too bad. I didn't mean to add.
- 28:33I didn't mean to Philly shit my arm. It wasn't me. I
- 28:37swear I didn't mean. Do I swear it? Dad? Take police out
- 28:41of it? Which you, Lieutenant Phil Come on, miss Banning, this
- 28:42is no way with my father. Please thank you for what you did.
- 29:03You might have saved my life. I didn't do anything. Well, of
- 29:06course you did. He wouldn't grabbed your father's arm, deflected his name.
- 29:10Mister Temple might have been killed. I didn't touch father. Father shut her.
- 29:15He aimed at her, and he shut her. I didn't touch him.
- 29:19He realized how bad she was, and he hated her. He shut
- 29:25her. He doesn't love her anymore. He only loved me. Yeah,
- 29:30but miss Banning had let her alone. Lieutenant. If this gives her any
- 29:34comfort. How to go on convincing herself. She's going to need all the
- 29:40comfort she can get. But what's to come? If you like a drink,
- 29:55Lieutenant, don't mind if I do. It's one case I was glad
- 29:59to get rid of. Made me feel kind of unclean. Banning wasn't a
- 30:03very nice person. I'm afraid or Anne or Hendrhim he had his daughter convinced
- 30:07though, yes he did, Ben, he has been all right at one
- 30:11time. You know what happened to him. He got afraid, I guess,
- 30:15afraid of losing his youth. That's what Anne represented. Afraid of losing
- 30:21his money, which she spent for in faster than he could make. It
- 30:25doesn't pay to get afraid, Lieutenant, I guess not. He's to not
- 30:32being afraid. He is to not being afraid. Yeah, but uh,
- 30:37how do you keep from it? You stave it off from one minute to
- 30:41the next, another drink for the next Minute's there by all means by Aholl
- 30:48means you've been listening to another transcribed adventure of the Saint the robin Hood of
- 31:03Modern Crime. Now here's our starve innct Price. In tonight's cast, you
- 31:11heard Peggy Weber, Gloria McMillan, Maggie Morley, Ted Osben, Theodore von
- 31:17Eltz, and Larry Dobkin. This is Vincent Price inviting you to join us
- 31:21again next week at the same time for another exciting adventure of the Saint.
- 31:26Good Night. The life script of the Saint was written by Dick Paul Don
- 31:44Stanley speaking three Chimes Mean Good Times on NBC. Today's the day for the
- 31:48premiere of NBC is Gigantic Sunday afternoon broadcast The Big Show. Every Sunday afternoon
- 31:52starting today, You'll hear an hour and a half of the greatest stars in
- 31:56radio performers like Fred Allen, Jimmy Dready, ethel Merman, Frankie Lane,
- 32:00Meredith Wilson, and many many more. It's the Big Show on NBC.
- 32:14Welcome Back definitely takes a more somber tom than the typical Saint story with the
- 32:21ending because you definitely feel really bad for the girl at the end of the
- 32:27story, though a good point from the Saint and a good life lesson.
- 32:31This is the type of episode I'll have to keep in mind if I ever
- 32:35decided to do all I needed to know I learned from the Saint. Well,
- 32:37we turned out to some listener comments and feedback, and we have this
- 32:43from Brian, who writes regarding his donation, I continue to enjoy all your
- 32:49podcasts. Thanks for your perseverance keep them coming. Well, thanks so much,
- 32:53Brian, to appreciate your continued support of the program. And then we
- 32:58have a comment from Mark, who, when we were playing the Verry Sullivan
- 33:04episode, says, I'm looking forward to the return of Vincent Price. I
- 33:08like his replacement, but Vincent is just the best, especially when he's paired
- 33:14with Louie. Well, thanks so much, Mark. And often when the
- 33:17Saints not paired with Louie, it's because Lawrence Dopkin, who plays the role
- 33:22of Louie, is playing some other role in this week's episode. Such was
- 33:28the case this week. Actually, So I do, though, love the
- 33:32Louie pairing. It's just such a classic matchup and really just fun how those
- 33:39two characters play off each other. All right, Well, there's one more
- 33:45thing I did want to talk about, because this week's episode announced the start
- 33:51of the Big Show. And oftentimes we'll let these sort of promotional announcements go
- 33:57by without much of a thought, and perhaps we have with some episodes of
- 34:01The Big Show mentioned on other programs, But I did want to talk about
- 34:07The Big Show what it was. Basically, CBS in the late forties did
- 34:17a talent raid on NBC. They brought some of the top comedians, their
- 34:25top talents over to CBS. Over the course of several years, you had
- 34:34so many people signing on to work for CBS, led by Jack Benny.
- 34:40You had Burns and Allen moving over there. You had Lomon Abner coming on
- 34:49the program, and CBS just had a very powerful entertainment lineup, with Benny's
- 34:57Sunday Night being the keystone. So in nineteen fifty NBC launched The Big Show.
- 35:04The Big Show was a ninety minute radio variety program hosted by Tallulah Bankhead,
- 35:12probably best known in Hollywood for her role in Lifeboat, but a well
- 35:16known stage actress. Program would air in Hollywood and at other times in New
- 35:22York City because there were a lot of radio stars who didn't have shows anymore,
- 35:30really had a power pack lineup, and it also included those on NBC
- 35:36who had other shows, who would of course appear as part of their function.
- 35:40The Big Show is just an embarrassment of riches. When it comes to
- 35:45talent, you have some of the best talent ever assembled on a single radio
- 35:52program. The comics on there included Fred Allen Jimmy Duranty. Also, there
- 35:59was an appearance or two by Martin and Lewis, Bob Hope, Groucho Marx,
- 36:04and the music was just extremely well done. Meredith Wilson, I think
- 36:10is an underrated forgotten musical genius, and his work on the orchestra there was
- 36:16simply phenomenal. And each episode of The Big Show ended with the entire cast
- 36:23coming on stage and singing Wilson's song Me the Good Lord, Bless and Keep
- 36:30You, which would actually become a closing song for a wide variety of acts
- 36:36over the year, but its origin was on NBC for The Big Show.
- 36:40The entire first season of The Big Show, plus an episode and two thirds
- 36:46of the second season is in general circulation and it's definitely worth listening to.
- 36:53You can go to archive dot org and take a listen. They also like
- 36:58many variety shows, and I think The Big Show is probably the last one
- 37:00to do this. They also enacted scenes from recent movies or plays occasionally,
- 37:09and I have to admit some of my favorites are when they go ahead and
- 37:14follow the serious dramatic reenactment with a comedy scene, particularly one starring Jimmy Duranty.
- 37:20But regardless of your taste, it's worth it's worth taking to listen to
- 37:23if you're into music or comedy of the era. All right, well,
- 37:28that will actually do it for today. We will be back tomorrow with Crime
- 37:34and Peter Chambers and join us next Monday for another episode of the Saint.
