- 0:49We're so glad you joined us. Let's get started.
- 0:53To God be the glory. Hi, I'm Healy, I'm your host of
- 0:58the Healthy and Redeemed podcast.
- 1:01Thank you so much for being here today.
- 1:04I'm excited to get started. This is Part 3 of Renewing Your
- 1:08Mind. Hopefully you've listened to
- 1:10Part 1 and Part 2 because this might not make sense, but maybe
- 1:16it will. But as you'll find, my podcast
- 1:19does kind of build on each other.
- 1:21So if sometimes I'm referencing something you may not totally
- 1:25understand, you might just check back to a previous episode.
- 1:29So in our first episode, we I kind of gave the biblical
- 1:33foundation of why it's important to change your thoughts and why
- 1:37it's important to have healthy thoughts.
- 1:42And we talked a little bit about cognitive behavioral therapy and
- 1:45what that looks like. And the last episode, Part 2, we
- 1:48talked about the cognitive behavioral triangle.
- 1:51We talked about neural pathways and automatic negative thoughts.
- 1:58And so today we're going to talk specifically about replacement
- 2:03thoughts, The reason why it's so important to replace our
- 2:07thoughts. I think I mentioned this last
- 2:09episode is like, we don't want to just push them out of our
- 2:13mind or think something happy. We want to actually address what
- 2:17the thought is and so that we can correct it and transform it
- 2:23to make it healthy. So replacement thoughts are
- 2:26basically statements that we put in place of the negative
- 2:31thoughts and our replacement thoughts need to be healthy.
- 2:36The reason that we need to replace our negative thoughts.
- 2:39Negative thoughts end up depressing us.
- 2:41They keep us stuck, they remove our motivation, and they
- 2:46physically just aren't good for our brains.
- 2:49The negative thinking is not godly thinking, and that's why I
- 2:55believe that God is telling us through His Word that we are to
- 3:02get our thinking right. So we know we need to replace
- 3:06our negative thoughts with a healthy thought.
- 3:09So what is a healthy thought? A good way to analyze if your
- 3:13thinking is healthy is to ask yourself these four questions
- 3:18and if it, if you can answer yes to all of them, that means it's
- 3:23a healthy thought. So one is, is it truthful?
- 3:292 is is it encouraging? 3, is it helpful?
- 3:34And four, is it positively phrased.
- 3:39So that's the that's the criteria truthful, encouraging,
- 3:44helpful and positively phrased. So again, you I found this
- 3:49criteria an easy way to remember and, and it actually is helpful
- 3:55for clients. Remember that healthy thoughts
- 3:58create these healthy neural pathways in our brains.
- 4:02And this is going to change our emotions for the better and help
- 4:08us create a healthier outlook on life.
- 4:11So let's take a little bit deeper.
- 4:14Look at these four questions. So let's look at is it truthful?
- 4:20I believe one of the most important things that we can
- 4:24think are true thoughts. Most of the thoughts that we
- 4:28think that are unhealthy are normally not true.
- 4:33We aren't just going to replace our negative thoughts with
- 4:37positive ones. We are going to make sure our
- 4:41thoughts are true. So if we are disappointed
- 4:46because we didn't get to do something, we don't just say
- 4:50it's OK, it's fine. We can acknowledge that we're
- 4:54disappointed and say I am disappointed.
- 4:58We can change our thought into how terrible it is that we
- 5:01didn't get to do something to just acknowledging our feeling.
- 5:05It is disappointing that I don't get to do that.
- 5:08But hopefully I can find something else to do or let me
- 5:14look for something else to do. So we want to make sure our
- 5:19thoughts are truthful and we don't ever want to deny truth.
- 5:25That's pretty biblical, right? Yes.
- 5:28OK. The second one, is it
- 5:29encouraging? It's not healthy to think
- 5:33discouraging thoughts. It is important that we have
- 5:38thoughts that encourage us, not thoughts that condemn us.
- 5:42Again, if you're feeling condemned by your thoughts, that
- 5:45is really going to keep you stuck.
- 5:50So if you have a statement about yourself that like I am fat,
- 5:55this statement does not motivate us, right?
- 6:00It is not an encouraging statement.
- 6:02Would you say that to a friend? No, that's not how you encourage
- 6:07a friend, right? Even if you want them to go to
- 6:09the gym and you want them to be healthy and all these things,
- 6:12you don't say you are fat. You would think of a better way
- 6:16to say that. Something that is more
- 6:18encouraging to them. Again, we don't want to deny
- 6:21truth, but there is a more encouraging way to say things
- 6:26and we want to be talking that way to ourselves.
- 6:29The next criteria is, is it helpful?
- 6:32Does the statement? Does the thought actually help
- 6:37you or motivate you in some way to do better?
- 6:41We want to make sure that the thought is useful for us.
- 6:45Unhealthy thoughts again will keep us stuck and definitely
- 6:50unmotivated. And lastly, we want to make sure
- 6:54that our statement or our thought is positive or
- 6:58positively phrased. Most of the time if you get
- 7:01through the 1st 3 criteria, it will be positive, but we want to
- 7:06make sure that it's positively phrased.
- 7:09So instead of saying something like if I have the negative
- 7:13thought I am dumb, I would not necessarily replace it with I am
- 7:19not dumb, right? Because why?
- 7:21That's got the whole entire sentence except not in our
- 7:25thought. So we really have to replace it
- 7:28with something like I am wise or I have the ability to be wise or
- 7:34I've made a lot of wise decisions in my life.
- 7:37So that's really important to make sure that we are rephrasing
- 7:41in a way that is positively phrased.
- 7:45What are some negative thoughts that you wrote down from last
- 7:49week? Did you have some?
- 7:53I imagine you had a few because otherwise you probably wouldn't
- 7:56be listening to this episode, right?
- 8:00So we've talked a lot about the ones that I have thought before
- 8:05and we've even had some replacement thoughts, I think.
- 8:08But let's do one that's pretty common for some people.
- 8:13I hate my body. Let's go through the criteria
- 8:16and see if that is a healthy thought.
- 8:19Is that true? We could argue yes, it's true,
- 8:23you do hate your body. If someone is thinking that, is
- 8:28it encouraging? What would you say to that?
- 8:31Is that a yes or a no? Is it encouraging?
- 8:35No, and I would say it's not encouraging because it doesn't
- 8:40bring about a positive feeling. It brings a feeling of
- 8:45hopelessness or sadness or anger at God that He made your body
- 8:50the way He made it. Is the statement helpful?
- 8:56I hate my body. Is that helpful in any way?
- 9:00Some might argue it could be helpful in the fact it might
- 9:04motivate you to do something, but I would argue differently.
- 9:10I don't think discouraging statements motivate us, I just
- 9:14don't. I have not seen it before.
- 9:16And if it does motivate you, it's for a short amount of time.
- 9:22It's not a sustained motivation. And is it positive?
- 9:27Is it positively phrased? I would say with the word hate
- 9:31in there, it is not positively phrased.
- 9:35What might be a positive replacement statement for that I
- 9:41hate my body. A replacement statement might be
- 9:45I am made in the image of God. And I think you could even maybe
- 9:56I don't really like the word hate.
- 9:58So I would probably even change that if you're going to keep
- 10:01that statement because sometimes I think it's OK, especially
- 10:04since that's true that you could keep that even though it doesn't
- 10:10meet any of the other criteria of I hate my body.
- 10:14But maybe I'm, I don't like my body.
- 10:18And even though that's not a great statement, we could keep
- 10:23that if we add but to the end, like I don't like my body, but I
- 10:29know I'm made in the image of God or I don't like my body, but
- 10:35I know that I can work to love it.
- 10:39So this would be one that I would work with on a client to
- 10:43go, OK, what works for you? I might ask them, what would you
- 10:47tell a friend that said that and then take the statement that
- 10:52they say and use it or kind of morph it into something that
- 10:57works for them. Because here's the thing with
- 11:00replacement thoughts, you really have to say something that fits
- 11:04well with you. Especially as women, we go
- 11:07through the phase where we don't like parts of our self.
- 11:11And I think that's true, especially when we're young.
- 11:15And AS I personally think as we get older, we do just learn to
- 11:18accept certain things about ourself.
- 11:20It's not going to change, especially if you're not going
- 11:23to do surgery or something. But learning how like this is my
- 11:26body. This is what God gave me.
- 11:29It's not a surprise to him. He intentionally made me the way
- 11:34that he made me. Now if I'm not healthy
- 11:38physically, then that is something that I can change.
- 11:42But if I don't like the way my ears are shaped or the longness
- 11:47of my toes, or, you know, the shortness of my legs, whatever
- 11:51it is, that's not something necessarily you're going to
- 11:55change by going to the gym or something like that.
- 11:59Like God gave you your body, and learning to love what he gave, I
- 12:06think brings honor to him. So we need to have a replacement
- 12:10statement that is encouraging to us, is true and bring some glory
- 12:17and that is what a healthy thought does.
- 12:21OK, let's take a negative thought like I make bad
- 12:26decisions. Probably the statement most
- 12:29clients say is I always make bad decisions.
- 12:33So we would ask ourselves, is that true?
- 12:38The answer will probably be no. Now I make bad decisions.
- 12:42That answer might be yes, but that actually is true of
- 12:48everyone. So, but anyway, so that could be
- 12:51true. Is it encouraging?
- 12:54No. Is it helpful?
- 12:56No. Again, because it is not
- 12:59encouraging or helpful. That statement I make bad
- 13:03decisions will probably keep us stuck where we do anything we
- 13:10can to avoid making a decision because because we think we make
- 13:19bad ones. So it's really important to have
- 13:21a replacement thought for that one.
- 13:23So again, if you want to use that statement, you can.
- 13:26I make bad decisions, but everyone makes bad decisions
- 13:30sometimes. I personally prefer and now I
- 13:34usually use the but ones when the client can't think of
- 13:39anything else to replace it with.
- 13:42But normally as we work through things, they get better at this.
- 13:46But I would say I have made good decisions before.
- 13:50I make good decisions. Now that's a good replacement
- 13:54statement because it is truthful, it's encouraging, it's
- 13:56helpful, and normally it's important because people do,
- 14:01we're not an always or never kind of people.
- 14:05Like yes, we make bad decisions, but we also make good ones,
- 14:08right? If we just think all the time
- 14:11that we make bad decisions, then yet that's going to hinder us in
- 14:16life. So one more let's talk about I'm
- 14:21a bad mom. This is a thought that comes in
- 14:24my office a lot. A lot of moms think they're bad
- 14:28moms. Now, honestly, I think deep down
- 14:31they know they're not because the first question is, is that
- 14:34truthful? And you know, they hesitate and,
- 14:38but ultimately we can get to, it's not truthful.
- 14:42Normally when we are evaluating our skill, especially as a
- 14:47parent, I normally before I even go down this thought evaluation
- 14:52process, you know, analyzing, is it truthful?
- 14:55Is it helpful? Is it encouraging?
- 14:57I normally ask what is the definition of a good mom and let
- 15:03them have a criteria for a good mom.
- 15:07What is a good mom look like? And normally they'll make out
- 15:11that list and then we can really analyze am I am IA bad mom?
- 15:17And normally the answer then is no, because they actually meet
- 15:21their own criteria of a good mom.
- 15:23And that doesn't mean we're a good mom every day of our life.
- 15:27I mean, we have moments of being excellent moms and we have
- 15:31moments of being not so excellent, right?
- 15:34It's important to just understand that's part of being
- 15:37a person. Like we are good and we're not
- 15:41so good and we make good decisions.
- 15:44We make bad decisions. Sometimes we're, you know, on
- 15:47top of our mental healthiness and sometimes we're not.
- 15:51So just recognizing that about ourselves.
- 15:53We're not going to be 100% anything.
- 15:58Anytime we say we're not good enough or things like I'm, I'm a
- 16:03bad Christian or you know, something where we're evaluating
- 16:08ourselves, it's best to kind of start with the list of what does
- 16:12good enough mean? What, how would I even meet that
- 16:15criteria? Or how does a regular person
- 16:17meet the criteria of being good enough, a good enough mom or a
- 16:21good enough Christian? What's that criteria as you make
- 16:24out that list? Then you, you actually have
- 16:27something to evaluate yourself against because otherwise this
- 16:32concept of a good enough mom, a good mom, good enough Christian,
- 16:38good Christian, like that's just hard to, it's so vague that it's
- 16:44hard to measure yourself up. Like then it's just your own
- 16:47personal opinion. Like, Oh yeah, I'm good.
- 16:48Oh yeah, I'm bad. So anyway, and I'm, I believe
- 16:52that that just fluctuates all the time on a continuum.
- 16:56Some moments we're like perfect and other moments we're not so
- 16:59great. So OK, so after we take the
- 17:04negative thought, we evaluate it based on that criteria.
- 17:09Truthful, encouraging, helpful, positively phrased, and we
- 17:14identify a healthy thought replacement.
- 17:18OK, so in my Changing Your Feelings book, I use the example
- 17:24of No one likes me. And we evaluated that, found
- 17:29that it's not true, it's not encouraging, it's not helpful,
- 17:32it's not positively phrased. And then we change that to
- 17:35something like, there are many people who actually love me, and
- 17:40this is where feelings can get in the way that you might feel
- 17:46like nobody loves you. Our feelings are very deceptive
- 17:51and they can lead us astray. So it's very important that
- 17:54we're always guided by truth. Our thoughts should be guided by
- 17:58truth, not by our emotions. So it's fine to say I don't feel
- 18:03loved, but it's harmful to us if we say I'm not loved because
- 18:09that's not true. You are loved and even if there
- 18:12wasn't one person on earth that loved you, God loves you and
- 18:18Jesus died on the cross for you out of his love for you.
- 18:25I do know though that there are people that love you.
- 18:29If you were to think no one loves me, that there are people
- 18:33on earth that love you and you. If you really feel like there is
- 18:38nobody, then I would say you're probably not getting out enough
- 18:41and sharing yourself with people so they have an opportunity to
- 18:45love you. So that's what your homework is
- 18:50going to be for this week is to take that negative thought list
- 18:55that you created and create some healthy replacement thoughts.
- 19:00Now, if you want to know if they are good thoughts first, you can
- 19:05just note, do they resonate with you?
- 19:08Do you like them? Do they feel encouraging to you
- 19:12because your replacement thought might be different than someone
- 19:15else's and that's OK. If you want an outside opinion
- 19:19and want my thoughts on it, you can definitely send those to me.
- 19:23There's a text link in the show notes and you can just send me a
- 19:28quick text and let me know if what I think about it and I'm
- 19:34happy to share that with you. So the last part that is helpful
- 19:40as you transform your thoughts is to provide proof.
- 19:47When you take your negative thought, the negative thoughts
- 19:50going to pop into your mind and you're going to replace it with
- 19:53the healthy thought. What is going to happen?
- 20:00I promise this is going to happen.
- 20:02What's going to happen is your mind is going to try to argue
- 20:06you out of your healthy replacement thought.
- 20:09OK, so for example, if the automatic negative thought that
- 20:15comes into my mind is I am dumb and I replace it with I am smart
- 20:21my brain because it wants to go down that strong neural pathway,
- 20:26it's going to say no, you're dumb and here's why.
- 20:30And it's going to give me some reasons why I'm dumb to prove my
- 20:33case. I need to have something to back
- 20:36me up that I'm actually smart, right?
- 20:39So I'm going to think of specific examples in my life
- 20:44that show that I am smart, OK, or things that I'm doing now.
- 20:49So I'm smart because I can hold a job.
- 20:52I am smart because I work hard. I am smart because I have made
- 20:58this decision and this decision and this decision.
- 21:01I'm smart because I've graduated high school.
- 21:04I'm smart because I've graduated college.
- 21:07I'm smart because I am raising my kids well.
- 21:11I'm making good decisions regarding them.
- 21:13Now, again, we're not doing that 100% of the time because
- 21:17nobody's smart 100% of the time, but I do have as many examples
- 21:23of being smart as I do of being dumb.
- 21:27So it's really important that we for our replacement statements
- 21:32that we have on the side of those replacement statement
- 21:36thoughts that we have some proof of that being true.
- 21:42OK, so if I have if my negative thought is I'm ugly, my
- 21:48replacement thought is I'm fearfully and wonderfully made.
- 21:54I could even go as far to say I'm beautiful and what's my
- 21:58proof? Well, my husband says I'm
- 22:00beautiful. God believes I'm beautiful.
- 22:02I made in his image after all. And maybe thinking of any
- 22:07specific situations that someone has said something kind in that
- 22:13regard. Now I'm I'm not a person that
- 22:15says I'm beautiful because I don't necessarily believe that
- 22:19is true. But do I have an inner beauty
- 22:25that is more important than that?
- 22:27Yes. I mean, that's what I work on.
- 22:29That's what I want to be working on.
- 22:31So my replacement statement would be something along that
- 22:37line. But honestly, my replacement
- 22:41statement to that is it doesn't really matter what I look like.
- 22:45I'm fearfully and wonderfully made, and then that makes me
- 22:48happy and that I can accept a lot of things about myself.
- 22:53Not everything, because some things I'm working on and want
- 22:56to change, but I can accept at a higher, more general level of
- 23:01who I am that I've been made in God's image and He loves me and
- 23:07I don't have to be perfect for Him to love me.
- 23:10Some really important things to remember.
- 23:12Then negative thoughts O automatically into our mind.
- 23:17It doesn't mean that it really doesn't mean anything.
- 23:21It's just a normal part of who we are.
- 23:23But if we want to create and have ourselves thinking
- 23:30healthier, then we need to start replacing those thoughts with
- 23:34something that is healthy. It's going to be kind of hard at
- 23:38first, but remember we're building new neural pathways so
- 23:44that we can function better, so that we can think differently.
- 23:51And the more we practice, the better and stronger these
- 23:55pathways are going to get. And this is what I have found
- 24:00when you actually do this, it'll be a lot of work at first, but
- 24:05after a while, your brain will actually take over and do it for
- 24:09you. And you'll be really like
- 24:12surprised one day when you like a negative thought pops into
- 24:16your mind and then suddenly you just change it and it's very
- 24:20easy. This is what God wants us to do.
- 24:24So he's definitely going to help you.
- 24:26Now it, it is hard, but God will help you.
- 24:32And I think as you work on these healthy thoughts, you were going
- 24:37to be amazed at how different your outlook on life is, how
- 24:43your gratitude will grow, how you'll look for the positive in
- 24:48things, how you'll look for the truth in things, how you'll try
- 24:52to be encouraging to yourself. And that is always a good
- 24:57question to ask yourself when you notice a possible negative
- 25:02thought that have popped into your mind is, would I say that
- 25:06to a friend? And if the answer is no, then
- 25:10you know quickly that it's not a healthy thought and you need to
- 25:14transform it into something that's better and that's going
- 25:17to work for you. I know that you can do it.
- 25:21And with a little prayer and a little perseverance, you are
- 25:25going to be able to do it. And I am excited about that.
- 25:30Once you practice these techniques for several weeks, I
- 25:36would love if you would report back to me small or big changes
- 25:42that have happened because of that.
- 25:44So you can go to my website and do a contact me form or in the
- 25:50show notes, there's a place that says text me.
- 25:53You can reach out and let me know.
- 25:55Has this episode been helpful and have you put some things
- 26:00into practice and what changes have you seen?
- 26:06Again, it's going to take a little bit of time and it's
- 26:08going to be a little hard, but I promise if you'll push through,
- 26:14you will get to where you want to be.
- 26:18And I hope that's a place filled with joy, with a worldview that
- 26:23is ingratitude and that just sees the blessings all around
- 26:31you. And that is a wonderful place to
- 26:33be. I thank you for joining me
- 26:35today. Let's go out this week and live
- 26:39a life that is healthy and redeemed, reflecting Jesus
- 26:45Christ in all that we do. Thanks again for joining me.
- 26:50Lord willing, I'll see you next time.
