- 0:29Speaker 2: How are we doing?
- 0:31Speaker 1: We are so good right now because there has been
- 0:35Speaker 1: a lot of activity around the Chicago Bears during the
- 0:41Speaker 1: trade season, the free agency season. I feel like the
- 0:46Speaker 1: Bears have put themselves in a position to be very competitive.
- 0:50Speaker 1: We're going to dig in on that. Plus whatever whatever
- 0:54Speaker 1: team you root for and whatever they've been doing, I
- 0:56Speaker 1: don't know, they don't really tend to make any noise
- 0:59Speaker 1: during the offseason, be as strategic as a team like
- 1:01Speaker 1: the Bears. So we can dig in on that and
- 1:04Speaker 1: everything else that's happening in the NFL with He may

- 4:06Speaker 2: Honestly, can't we wait either, Chad. I'll be honest, like
- 4:09Speaker 2: it's you. Probably the same feeling I do, is that
- 4:12Speaker 2: you go through this winter mode and you not that
- 4:14Speaker 2: you're depressed, but you need sunshine and warmth and that
- 4:18Speaker 2: first day of like semispring. I mean, I know you
- 4:20Speaker 2: had up to get it when it's like sixty seventy
- 4:22Speaker 2: degrees out, Yes, you get that air. To me, that
- 4:26Speaker 2: in the beginning of March Madness is like the best
- 4:28Speaker 2: time of year. Like it's someone that lives in the Northeast.
- 4:30Speaker 2: So the fact that we're going Chicago when the weather's
- 4:34Speaker 2: getting right and we're gonna be partying with fans of

- 4:54Speaker 1: of my buddies listened to Tuesday Show and he loves these.
- 4:59Speaker 1: His name is Any and he loves these story episodes
- 5:03Speaker 1: that we do. He was so in love with Matt Mitchell.
- 5:07Speaker 1: He was so in love with Matt Mitchell's questions and
- 5:09Speaker 1: his honesty and the story about how Matt proposed to
- 5:13Speaker 1: his wife at a casino. He texted me, He's like,
- 5:16Speaker 1: I am the president of the Matt Mitchell fan Club.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I cannot wait to meet him at the event. So
- 5:22Speaker 1: even Matt Mitchell is going to get some love, and
- 5:24Speaker 1: he'll be there in his you know, master's green blazer.
- 5:28Speaker 1: All right, let's get into it. I feel like we're
- 5:30Speaker 1: making Ray Bun jealous. He might want to come. Fellas. Look,
- 5:35Speaker 1: it has been crazy. Dk Metcalf going to the Steelers,
- 5:40Speaker 1: Justin Fields going to the Jets, Sam Darnold going to Seattle,
- 5:43Speaker 1: Gino Smith going to the Raiders, Daniel Jones going to
- 5:47Speaker 1: the Colts. You know, Stafford is staying in La DeVante,
- 5:53Speaker 1: Adams is going to La The Eagles have been offloading
- 5:56Speaker 1: the Josh Allen extension. All of this, all this has
- 5:59Speaker 1: been happened, right, Raybell, let me start with you the
- 6:04Speaker 1: top two free agent signings slash trades people are not
- 6:10Speaker 1: talking enough about and why.
- 6:14Speaker 3: I think it's I think you got to start with
- 6:16Speaker 3: the team that lost the Super Bowl to Kansas City
- 6:18Speaker 3: Chiefs signing Javid Moore to play presumably their left tackle position.
- 6:23Speaker 3: You know, we saw all the issues that they had
- 6:26Speaker 3: going up against that Eagles pass rush, and you know,
- 6:29Speaker 3: then they end up losing Joe Toney they trade him,
- 6:32Speaker 3: so they kind of made a bet, you know, on
- 6:34Speaker 3: their under two interior linemen and uh Moore, who's who
- 6:38Speaker 3: played really well like last year, there was really no
- 6:40Speaker 3: drop off last couple of years when he subbed in
- 6:43Speaker 3: for Trent Williams and San Francisco. So if they can,
- 6:46Speaker 3: if he can keep that up, that would solve just
- 6:48Speaker 3: a major issue. Uh for the Kansas City Chiefs. That
- 6:52Speaker 3: was probably the difference between them, uh, you know, being
- 6:55Speaker 3: in position at least keeping it a game in in
- 6:58Speaker 3: that three pat and not and then and kind of
- 7:00Speaker 3: a related situation, I would say, like another one is
- 7:04Speaker 3: Laramie Tunseel getting traded to the Washington Commanders. You know,
- 7:08Speaker 3: as good as Jaden Daniels can move around. They're still
- 7:12Speaker 3: in the division with the Eagles. But the Eagles lost
- 7:14Speaker 3: some guys on their defensive line, so that kind of
- 7:18Speaker 3: tilts the power a little bit too. So I thought
- 7:21Speaker 3: those two those two moves offensive line, no you know, no,
- 7:25Speaker 3: no sexy wide receivers, quarterbacks going straight to the offensive line.
- 7:29Speaker 1: You know, it's interesting obviously, Simon, you and I talk
- 7:31Speaker 1: about offensive line and defensive line being so powerful when
- 7:35Speaker 1: it comes to looking at these teams, handicapping these teams,
- 7:40Speaker 1: what did you see raybon in More? You say there
- 7:44Speaker 1: was no drop off from Trent Williams. It's not like
- 7:48Speaker 1: the Niners went five deep at running back this year, right.
- 7:52Speaker 1: It seemed like every single week one of their guys
- 7:55Speaker 1: was getting hurt. And I think it was who was
- 7:58Speaker 1: the guy Isaac Gudiera Rundow from U c ol A,
- 8:02Speaker 1: Like even he was like in that running scheme doing
- 8:06Speaker 1: amazingly well. What was so good about More? That makes
- 8:10Speaker 1: you feel like there wasn't a drop off? What did
- 8:12Speaker 1: you see? What were the numbers?
- 8:14Speaker 3: So the way I'll put it is, let's think of
- 8:17Speaker 3: a team that has a really good offensive line, the
- 8:19Speaker 3: Philadelphia Eagles. We know how good they can run right.
- 8:21Speaker 3: But and Simon could attest to this. When they brought
- 8:25Speaker 3: in Johnson like the other Johnson for for a couple
- 8:29Speaker 3: of games at tackle, uh, you know, he couldn't. He
- 8:33Speaker 3: was not playing well at all. Whereas when you looked
- 8:35Speaker 3: at More like I was kind of knocking down San
- 8:39Speaker 3: Francisco's run game each and every week, I was, I was,
- 8:43Speaker 3: you know, upping their pressure rate, and it really just
- 8:45Speaker 3: didn't happen. Over the past two seasons, he's played about
- 8:50Speaker 3: uh five hundred total snaps and that's that's really the
- 8:55Speaker 3: question mark, but only two sacks allowed for more only
- 9:00Speaker 3: in his entire career on about one thousand total snaps.
- 9:04Speaker 3: And the big thing is he can He's a swing tackle,
- 9:06Speaker 3: but mostly left tackle, so I think that's really important.
- 9:12Speaker 3: You know, that left tackle spot, which is so crucial
- 9:15Speaker 3: for the Chiefs. And then because you lost Tuning, now
- 9:18Speaker 3: you don't even have that, oh traded, you don't have
- 9:21Speaker 3: that option, So they're making it a big bet on More.
- 9:24Speaker 3: His His PFF pass blot grade has gone up each
- 9:29Speaker 3: of the last three seasons. He was a seventy three
- 9:31Speaker 3: point one last year, which is very very good. And
- 9:34Speaker 3: I just think that if he plays like he played
- 9:38Speaker 3: especially last year in kind of abbreviated snaps, you know,
- 9:42Speaker 3: with under three hundred snaps. I just think that's a
- 9:45Speaker 3: huge upgrade for the Chiefs because they had that dominant
- 9:49Speaker 3: interior line with Joe Tuney, you know, Jones and Humphrey
- 9:53Speaker 3: and they, I mean, excusey, Trey Smith and Humphrey and
- 9:56Speaker 3: they really it didn't it didn't show through like you had.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Your running game was really struggling down the stretch, especially
- 10:03Speaker 3: for Checho and against good pass rushes. Mahomes was still
- 10:07Speaker 3: getting sacked and being forced into bad decisions. So it's
- 10:10Speaker 3: obvious that that tackle spot is huge for the Chiefs.
- 10:12Speaker 3: So they kind of made a bet on that. You know,
- 10:15Speaker 3: the money's getting a little bit tighter, even though the
- 10:17Speaker 3: cap has risen just because of you know what they're
- 10:20Speaker 3: paying to some of their stars. So I just think
- 10:22Speaker 3: that's going to be such a big move. And it
- 10:25Speaker 3: doesn't go right, they'll probably be in trouble some men.
- 10:29Speaker 1: It's an annual tradition. People will forget about the Chiefs,
- 10:33Speaker 1: people will not want to bet on the Chiefs. People
- 10:35Speaker 1: will overlook the Chiefs. Even though the Chiefs are seven
- 10:38Speaker 1: to one right now after the Eagles to win the
- 10:40Speaker 1: Super Bowl plus seven hundred along with the Ravens just
- 10:45Speaker 1: ahead of the Bills. Do you agree with this idea
- 10:50Speaker 1: from Raybon?
- 10:52Speaker 2: Yeah? I like in the sense that I think, just
- 10:56Speaker 2: like most years, will be able to get great value
- 10:58Speaker 2: on the Chiefs when we bet them in October to
- 11:00Speaker 2: win the Super Bowl, that this soil Lion's gonna need
- 11:02Speaker 2: some time to get it together. They'll drop one or
- 11:05Speaker 2: two games, maybe lose a game to the Raiders in
- 11:07Speaker 2: week two. Everyone jumps off ship. Me and you, Chad,
- 11:10Speaker 2: always the wiser, will just passionately wait and get them
- 11:13Speaker 2: at what twelve to one, thirteen to one? That's usually
- 11:16Speaker 2: how it goes. But yeah, for me, you know, I
- 11:19Speaker 2: love the off season these moves because it is the classic.
- 11:23Speaker 2: One man's trash is another man's treasure, and a lot
- 11:25Speaker 2: of these moves are just trash to trash. Right. It's like,
- 11:29Speaker 2: are the Jets the Jets really get better by getting
- 11:31Speaker 2: justin fields? No, those fans have been through hell. They're
- 11:34Speaker 2: excited about it because they're going from an old forty
- 11:37Speaker 2: year old man to a young great athlete in his twenties,
- 11:41Speaker 2: and they're hoping that maybe they can find a spark
- 11:43Speaker 2: with Justin Fields and this team. So it's really fun
- 11:47Speaker 2: this time of the year. And for me, it's all
- 11:49Speaker 2: about the betting angle, right, Chad, And that's what this
- 11:51Speaker 2: show is about. And you know, a week ago I
- 11:54Speaker 2: gave out I Love the Rams twenty eight to one.
- 11:58Speaker 2: They go out get divine. The Adams. Forty nine ers
- 12:02Speaker 2: have just basically getting all the guys off the ship.
- 12:05Speaker 2: They're just cutting all the old guys trying to get young.
- 12:08Speaker 2: The Rams are now twenty to one for Super Bowl odds,
- 12:11Speaker 2: so that's a big movement based off what the forty
- 12:14Speaker 2: nine ers have done and what the Rams themselves have done.
- 12:16Speaker 2: So that's to me, that's great because I love you know,
- 12:19Speaker 2: I just love getting good value and it's like, Okay,
- 12:21Speaker 2: we got a great number on the Rams, and it's
- 12:23Speaker 2: keep going. I think it's gonna keep dropping because I
- 12:25Speaker 2: don't know who's going to be betting the forty nine
- 12:27Speaker 2: ers better than professional betters. Right. The public to me
- 12:30Speaker 2: is going to be totally off this fort ninners team,
- 12:32Speaker 2: just because I think anyone, anyone rationally would think they'd
- 12:36Speaker 2: miss their window. Right, they're getting rid of they're all
- 12:38Speaker 2: pro full back. They're getting rid of Deebo, which you
- 12:41Speaker 2: can say Deebo has kind of missed it, that's fair,
- 12:44Speaker 2: but he's still an important cock to their offense. Right now,
- 12:46Speaker 2: it is all on Ayuk and a second year player
- 12:49Speaker 2: and a wide receiver. So it's it's really interesting what's
- 12:52Speaker 2: happening with these two teams and the Rams of fort niners,
- 12:54Speaker 2: because all you're hearing right now with the forty nine
- 12:56Speaker 2: ers is that they're gonna have to pay party and
- 12:59Speaker 2: they're fighting behind because pretty saying I think I'm an elite,
- 13:03Speaker 2: and they're saying, well, the talent around you elite, we
- 13:04Speaker 2: don't think you are, so we're not going to pay
- 13:06Speaker 2: you fifty million dollars. So is that a lot of
- 13:08Speaker 2: drama chat has got carry into the season Because I
- 13:09Speaker 2: know you are in on the forty nine ers, I'm
- 13:12Speaker 2: not right, I like the Rams side of it. So
- 13:14Speaker 2: I think those are two very very unique teams where
- 13:17Speaker 2: everything feels like it's been negative this offseason for the
- 13:19Speaker 2: forty nine ers, where things have been really positive for
- 13:21Speaker 2: this Rams team, and then you know, to go to
- 13:23Speaker 2: your Bears team. I mean, I know you were just
- 13:25Speaker 2: pointing to talk about it. I can't get over it.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Like the fact they address the interior line in such
- 13:31Speaker 2: a great way right getting the best center that was available.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Addressing the left guard and right guard we talked about
- 13:38Speaker 2: last year. I told you I think interior now on
- 13:40Speaker 2: the offensive line is more important to the next year here.
- 13:42Speaker 2: I really think there's been a switch to the NFL
- 13:44Speaker 2: where it's more important to having a really good left
- 13:46Speaker 2: guard and right guard than is a left tackle and
- 13:48Speaker 2: right tackle. Even more so with an offense like you, Chad,
- 13:51Speaker 2: where Caleb he can he can mess up when there's
- 13:55Speaker 2: rush up the middle if he gets pushed the outside.
- 13:58Speaker 2: That's where we've seen the magical Kala limbs like his
- 14:01Speaker 2: His movement on the outside once you get side the
- 14:02Speaker 2: pocket's brilliant. It's inside the pocket that's been a struggle
- 14:05Speaker 2: for him. Right when he gets that Perchu up the
- 14:07Speaker 2: middle and he gets happy feet, that's been a problem.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Ben Johnson came in day one and went to your
- 14:12Speaker 2: GM and told him that's what I want to do.
- 14:14Speaker 2: So I love it because this year has been different
- 14:16Speaker 2: than lat year. Last year was all about Derrick, Henry
- 14:19Speaker 2: Saquan right, these sexy running backs, trying to add them
- 14:22Speaker 2: to a team that's missing one piece. For this year,
- 14:24Speaker 2: it really feels like it's been not just boring, but
- 14:27Speaker 2: more about address the interior offensive line, addressed the D
- 14:31Speaker 2: line because of what the Eagles did in the Super Bowl,
- 14:33Speaker 2: where we have a little bit of mixed sprinkedin of
- 14:35Speaker 2: DK and you know Adams, he's ever want to receiver
- 14:38Speaker 2: switching teams. But to me, this offseason has really been
- 14:41Speaker 2: about addressing these teams D lines and offensive line. So
- 14:45Speaker 2: I'm loving every move the Bear's team has made so far.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Yeah, look, I'm glad you brought it up. I wasn't
- 14:51Speaker 1: going to open ye.
- 14:52Speaker 2: I bet you are.
- 14:53Speaker 1: I didn't want to be the homer.
- 14:56Speaker 2: You kn't deny it. It's incredible.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Look, I love I love that Ray runs. Two top
- 15:01Speaker 1: plays were offensive tackles. I love that one of your
- 15:07Speaker 1: key points is talking interior line. I agree with you,
- 15:12Speaker 1: and I don't disagree with you. Because of what we
- 15:14Speaker 1: saw with Caleb Williams. Most obviously, teams are trying to
- 15:19Speaker 1: play their young quarterbacks as quickly as possible. The biggest
- 15:22Speaker 1: challenge for young quarterbacks is when they get pressure up
- 15:25Speaker 1: the middle, When they have pressure in their face and
- 15:28Speaker 1: they have to run to the edge, but they might
- 15:30Speaker 1: not have time because it's so overwhelming to have three
- 15:35Speaker 1: guys coming at you from the middle of the off
- 15:39Speaker 1: from the middle of the defensive line who are so
- 15:41Speaker 1: much faster than you are used to when you've been
- 15:43Speaker 1: playing in college. You can't get to the edge, so
- 15:45Speaker 1: you just keep running backwards. Right. We saw this with
- 15:49Speaker 1: Caleb Williams. Everything you just said is true before we
- 15:52Speaker 1: get to the Bears. My quibble with what you're saying
- 15:55Speaker 1: about the Niners is deebo is gone. Fine, he was
- 15:58Speaker 1: trending down. Brandon I Luke is back. He was the
- 16:01Speaker 1: primary target for brock Purty anyways, So it's a wash. Right.
- 16:05Speaker 1: You might lose some something, you know, because you're losing
- 16:10Speaker 1: a high profile fullback who was an important part of
- 16:13Speaker 1: your scheme. But you're going to get back Christian McCaffrey,
- 16:16Speaker 1: so you're getting back to your most important playmakers, and
- 16:18Speaker 1: you're still going to have Kittle at tight end. So
- 16:21Speaker 1: I don't worry so much about the Niners. In fact,
- 16:24Speaker 1: I might buy into the Niners again if their odds drop,
- 16:27Speaker 1: because I think you might still be getting value on
- 16:29Speaker 1: there now. For the Bears, the number one play for me,
- 16:36Speaker 1: Drew Dolmen signing the center from the Falcons sign in
- 16:40Speaker 1: how many times over the past two years, whether it
- 16:43Speaker 1: was Arthur Smith or the new scheme that the Falcons
- 16:47Speaker 1: were running, did we talk about Drew Dolmen at Chris
- 16:52Speaker 1: Linstrom the right guard for the Falcons. They were so
- 16:55Speaker 1: dominant when you look at Raybound talks about their PFF grades, right,
- 16:59Speaker 1: the PFF grades. Lyn Trim and Dolman were so highly
- 17:03Speaker 1: rated by PFF over the past couple of seasons because
- 17:06Speaker 1: of their ability to control the line of scrimmage and
- 17:09Speaker 1: create a scheme that allows the Falcons to be so
- 17:12Speaker 1: effective in the running game. I can't believe the Bears
- 17:15Speaker 1: now have Joe Toney and Drew Dolman as part of
- 17:18Speaker 1: their interior line. Jonah Jackson, I think the jury's out.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Is he going to be a Pro Bowl player? Is
- 17:23Speaker 1: going to be a guy who's sort of off the
- 17:25Speaker 1: roster last year essentially for the Rams? I don't know.
- 17:30Speaker 1: But Drew Dolman, Joe Toney, that's I mean.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Wow.
- 17:36Speaker 1: And so we backed up a truck for Grady Jarrett.
- 17:40Speaker 1: We got a grown ass man now playing in the
- 17:42Speaker 1: middle of the defensive line like Holy Tomley, go ahead, Oh.
- 17:49Speaker 2: I was just going to piggyback off. What you're saying
- 17:51Speaker 2: is that it's year one of what you expect to
- 17:54Speaker 2: be two to three years of the right direction, right,
- 17:57Speaker 2: Like this is just the beginning. We don't want to
- 17:58Speaker 2: get too far ahead of our skis, like Nick Wright
- 18:01Speaker 2: and pick the Bears go to super Bowl this season.
- 18:03Speaker 2: But it's it's you can't deny it, right, These are
- 18:06Speaker 2: the exact moves you wanted to see, right. You didn't
- 18:08Speaker 2: want to see them go get another wide receiver. You
- 18:10Speaker 2: didn't want to see them go out and sign you know,
- 18:13Speaker 2: as much as I love Milon Williams, his contract's atrocious, Like,
- 18:17Speaker 2: no one should be paying million Williams the amount of
- 18:19Speaker 2: money he just received from the Patriots. Like that's the
- 18:21Speaker 2: type of move that you guys could have made and
- 18:23Speaker 2: been like, okay, same old Bears, just trying to make
- 18:26Speaker 2: a splash, But no, it's all logical, smart And I'm
- 18:29Speaker 2: sure Chris feels the same way, where it's like, you know,
- 18:31Speaker 2: we like to shit on you and your Bears, Dad,
- 18:33Speaker 2: It's it's hard to shit on them this offseason where
- 18:35Speaker 2: they've really nailed it at this point.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Yeah, it's all about Kayler Williams now. Like you know,
- 18:41Speaker 3: last year there was a lot of optimism too, but
- 18:44Speaker 3: the team, you know, to your points, I mean, it
- 18:46Speaker 3: was just not quite built the right way. It was
- 18:48Speaker 3: too many flashy, like fantasy video game type moves where
- 18:51Speaker 3: you know, the wide receiving called it great, but you
- 18:53Speaker 3: got a rookie quarterback, you know, not great coaches. So
- 18:57Speaker 3: it really comes down to Caleb because I think I
- 19:00Speaker 3: think we know what Ben Johnson is offensively. Now he
- 19:03Speaker 3: could turn. Maybe he's one of those coaches that when
- 19:05Speaker 3: he gets more responsibilities, you might struggle in certain aspects.
- 19:09Speaker 3: But I think ultimately Caleb Williams at times was really
- 19:15Speaker 3: bad last year and at other times he was really good.
- 19:17Speaker 3: So this year he's gonna have no excuse with what
- 19:21Speaker 3: they put around him offensively in terms of the coaching
- 19:23Speaker 3: staff and the offensive line.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Well, look, you could have looked at it a couple
- 19:27Speaker 1: different ways. The Bears last year decided we can't do
- 19:31Speaker 1: all of it at once. We went after the talent
- 19:34Speaker 1: that we thought was available. They re signed DJ Moore.
- 19:38Speaker 1: He came on at certain points at the end of
- 19:41Speaker 1: the year, started to get more comfortable. They went after
- 19:44Speaker 1: Keenan Allen. He probably won't be with the team this year.
- 19:46Speaker 1: They drafted Roma Dunes, right, they went after sort of
- 19:49Speaker 1: the best players that were available at the time, didn't
- 19:52Speaker 1: overspend on the offensive line. They kept the Refluse. Everybody
- 19:55Speaker 1: thought that was a mistake, but maybe I don't think
- 19:59Speaker 1: they were get you know, they were playing three D
- 20:01Speaker 1: chess here and thinking, Okay, we're going to keep Eberflues
- 20:04Speaker 1: because he's only gonna last one more year and then
- 20:06Speaker 1: we're gonna get Ben Johnson. You don't want to waste
- 20:09Speaker 1: a year at Kayleb Williams. They did the best they
- 20:11Speaker 1: could in the second year. They're being very focused on
- 20:14Speaker 1: the offensive line. Before we came on the air, we
- 20:17Speaker 1: were joking about like inept teams. The Cowboys have had
- 20:22Speaker 1: an inept unremarkable, questionable, head scratching offseason where for the
- 20:30Speaker 1: umpteenth year in a row, they are not spending, They're
- 20:34Speaker 1: not willing to sign players. Rico Dowdell just signed a
- 20:37Speaker 1: new deal with another team, one year, three million. He's
- 20:40Speaker 1: going to be better than any running back the Cowboys
- 20:42Speaker 1: are putting money on and they could have had him
- 20:45Speaker 1: for nothing. Right, The Bears have historically been a team
- 20:48Speaker 1: that would not go all in on coaches. They went
- 20:51Speaker 1: all in on Ben Johnson, they have gone all in
- 20:54Speaker 1: on Grady jar they have gone all in Andrew domand
- 20:56Speaker 1: they have. You can't say the Bears are not spending
- 20:59Speaker 1: this year. I'm as shot as anybody. I think it's amazing,
- 21:04Speaker 1: just amazing. But this will not be the year, Simon.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Will not be the year like two years ago where
- 21:13Speaker 1: I overinvest in the Chicago Bears like we did with
- 21:17Speaker 1: Justin Fields. Let's talk about fields for a second. The
- 21:22Speaker 1: NFL is kind of about one thing right now. As
- 21:25Speaker 1: dynamic as a player can be at the quarterback position,
- 21:30Speaker 1: if he can't convert the easy throws on third down,
- 21:34Speaker 1: if you can't rely on the quarterback to execute in
- 21:38Speaker 1: the four or five times a game when he has
- 21:40Speaker 1: to make the throw, you can't have a winning team.
- 21:45Speaker 1: If we talk about free agent signings and trades, people
- 21:47Speaker 1: are talking too much about but won't matter. Justin Fields
- 21:50Speaker 1: to the Jets for me, is right at the top
- 21:53Speaker 1: of the list. Simon, agree or disagree, you have an
- 21:57Speaker 1: opposing view. Do you have another one to add to this?
- 22:01Speaker 2: I'll disagree in a sense that I just believe in
- 22:04Speaker 2: quarterbacks and taking the upside, and it doesn't matter what
- 22:07Speaker 2: they've done other places. We've learned now over the years
- 22:10Speaker 2: that the hope is you find the Baker Sam Darnold
- 22:14Speaker 2: type of year right, You're always gonna believe that if
- 22:16Speaker 2: I have the right coaching, put the right pieces around
- 22:18Speaker 2: these guys, that we can make this work. Right, Because
- 22:20Speaker 2: there's a reason that Justin Fields was a top pick, right.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Athleticism is off the charts. It's just what you talked
- 22:27Speaker 2: about his checkdown passes, Like when it's when he's gotting
- 22:30Speaker 2: a little pressure in his face, he can't complete a
- 22:31Speaker 2: four yard pass. That's a major issue. Like you're saying,
- 22:34Speaker 2: there's a reason he's not a start in the league.
- 22:36Speaker 2: It's basically that. It's pretty simple. He comes down to it.
- 22:39Speaker 2: That's really the issue with him. And you know, when
- 22:42Speaker 2: I'm breaking this down and looking at his film and
- 22:44Speaker 2: why the Jets are making this move, they have a
- 22:46Speaker 2: vision for it. They have a vision for what they're
- 22:48Speaker 2: going to do. Now I'm on the other side where
- 22:50Speaker 2: I think they might be one of the worst teams
- 22:51Speaker 2: in all football, this Jets team. So the fact they're
- 22:53Speaker 2: making this move giving him a two year deal. Baby.
- 22:56Speaker 2: In their mind, they're just like, well, good, we'll get
- 22:57Speaker 2: a high draft pick next year and go get our
- 22:59Speaker 2: quarterback for real, and then we'll just have him next
- 23:01Speaker 2: year on the one year deal and he can be
- 23:03Speaker 2: a nice little bridge gap quarterback. Because I'm in the
- 23:06Speaker 2: same camp as you chat where it's like when you
- 23:08Speaker 2: look at their division right now, they're in fourth, and
- 23:11Speaker 2: it's it feels like by a lot right they're they're
- 23:13Speaker 2: way behind Josh Allen Tua and now the hope is
- 23:17Speaker 2: Drake May ticks that next step. So yeah, for me
- 23:21Speaker 2: and you, I feel like it's gonna be pretty easy
- 23:23Speaker 2: bet taking their under. This Jets team and just everything
- 23:25Speaker 2: they've done this offseason is just like could it happen?
- 23:29Speaker 1: Right?
- 23:29Speaker 2: We saw it happened last year the Viking. Sure, anything
- 23:31Speaker 2: can happen in football. Sam Darnal could have a career year,
- 23:33Speaker 2: justin Fields could come come out have a career year.
- 23:37Speaker 2: I bet you he doesn't, and I'm willing to put
- 23:38Speaker 2: money on it. So that's it's pretty interesting. That was
- 23:41Speaker 2: their big move. And the Jets fans are happy, but
- 23:43Speaker 2: you know, they're just like Cowboys fans, man, They're just
- 23:45Speaker 2: they've been through it, like you know, the Cowboys, like
- 23:48Speaker 2: you just started like talking about how bad they've been
- 23:50Speaker 2: and how they haven't really done anything in this offseason.
- 23:52Speaker 2: It's like, you know, that's stat. Washington made it last
- 23:56Speaker 2: last year. Washington made it to the conference championship game.
- 23:59Speaker 2: The Cowboys only team the NFC that have not been
- 24:01Speaker 2: the conference championship game in like thirty years. That doesn't
- 24:04Speaker 2: even sound real if you're a fan of football or
- 24:07Speaker 2: fan just how dominant they were in the nineties. So yeah,
- 24:11Speaker 2: I get why their fans are pissed off, and I'm
- 24:13Speaker 2: honestly shocked that it's not talked about more in media
- 24:16Speaker 2: right now about how the Cowboys are just everything they're
- 24:20Speaker 2: doing is wrong, right, not signing Michael Parsons before all
- 24:23Speaker 2: these other dns just got paid big money. Everything I
- 24:26Speaker 2: do is just wrong. So yeah, I'm right there with
- 24:29Speaker 2: you where it's like, you know, the Justin Fields thing
- 24:33Speaker 2: not doesn't move the needle for me, But I get
- 24:35Speaker 2: why they did it because it's like, what else are
- 24:37Speaker 2: you gonna do? There's that's that's the problem with this
- 24:40Speaker 2: league is only thirty two quarterbacks, and we choke, We
- 24:43Speaker 2: joke all the time chat. You don't want that bottom
- 24:45Speaker 2: ten quarterbacks. They're all the same, they're all interchangeable. So yeah,
- 24:48Speaker 2: really really tough spot for the Jets, But there is
- 24:51Speaker 2: some upside in the play, so I get where they're
- 24:53Speaker 2: doing it.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Ray Bond, you're shaking your head affirmatively. I should note
- 24:58Speaker 1: when Simon is saying the Jets may one of the
- 25:00Speaker 1: worst teams.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, and this extends to really I would
- 25:06Speaker 3: say you're asking just more generally, what is the the
- 25:10Speaker 3: signing or signings that people were talking too much about.
- 25:13Speaker 3: That's not gonna mean anything. I think it's just all
- 25:15Speaker 3: this veteran quarterback musical chairs. I think the most important
- 25:21Speaker 3: quarterback went to the most important place he could be,
- 25:25Speaker 3: and that was Matthew Stafford staying with the Rams because
- 25:28Speaker 3: we already saw that he can win a Super Bowl
- 25:31Speaker 3: at this stage in his career. With this general iteration
- 25:35Speaker 3: of the Rams, you know, that's that's that's what we've seen.
- 25:38Speaker 3: So everyone else, you know, Raiders getting Geno Smith, I'm
- 25:44Speaker 3: gonna fade them, the Seahawks getting Sam Darnold, Gonna fade them,
- 25:49Speaker 3: Jets getting Justin Fields, gonna fade them. Who else I'm
- 25:54Speaker 3: leaving out you know, like where Aaron.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Rodgers Daniel Jones.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, yeah, they need Daniel Jones is like
- 26:07Speaker 3: statistically anyway, it's hilarious. He was just so much better
- 26:11Speaker 3: of a thrower of the football than Anthony Richardson last
- 26:15Speaker 3: year that it's comical. But yeah, just another example of
- 26:19Speaker 3: like this year. Simon kind of alluded to it earlier.
- 26:23Speaker 3: You know, like quarterback is the most important position, you
- 26:26Speaker 3: know in terms of betting and the points right and
- 26:28Speaker 3: all that, but it seemed like last year the most
- 26:30Speaker 3: important move was moves were running backs. We saw the
- 26:33Speaker 3: Ravens and you know, competing for a title with Henry
- 26:36Speaker 3: and then of course Saquon and the Eagles end up
- 26:40Speaker 3: winning it. And this year just it's like all these
- 26:42Speaker 3: quarterback musical chairs and nothing really moves the needle. Like
- 26:45Speaker 3: even wherever Aaron Rodgers goes to me doesn't really move
- 26:48Speaker 3: the needle because all the teams that are the true contenders,
- 26:52Speaker 3: and and our guy evn Abrams talks about this all
- 26:54Speaker 3: the time, like if you kind of looked about about
- 26:56Speaker 3: twelve to one, it's where the cutoff is if you
- 26:58Speaker 3: can't get to that twelve one spot in terms of
- 27:01Speaker 3: Super Bowl odds. By the time the season starts, you're
- 27:04Speaker 3: pretty much out of the running. And Burrow is probably
- 27:09Speaker 3: the quarterback that didn't make it last year that's in
- 27:11Speaker 3: the running. But Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, we know the
- 27:13Speaker 3: guys Hurts Lamar like these teams, the teams that are
- 27:17Speaker 3: gonna contend to have a quarterback, the Rams are are
- 27:20Speaker 3: going to be there, I think, and all these other
- 27:22Speaker 3: guys just doesn't mean much. And I don't think this
- 27:24Speaker 3: rookie class is particularly strong either, So all you know,
- 27:29Speaker 3: everyone wants to talk about quarterbacks, and you know, even
- 27:31Speaker 3: Metcalf to the Steelers because that's kind of quarterback adjacent
- 27:34Speaker 3: where great, it's like they have they have they always
- 27:38Speaker 3: are going to have a high floor, and maybe that
- 27:40Speaker 3: rais are ceiling a little bit. But you know, Seahawks
- 27:44Speaker 3: win one ten games with with with good receivers last
- 27:47Speaker 3: year and a mediocre quarterback and didn't even couldn't even
- 27:51Speaker 3: make the playoffs. And the Steers are in a competitive
- 27:53Speaker 3: division as well. So I just think all these quarterback
- 27:55Speaker 3: moves get talked about a little too much, and I
- 27:59Speaker 3: don't really think are going to change who we see
- 28:01Speaker 3: in that in that final four.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Could not agree more. The Steelers interesting though, because like,
- 28:08Speaker 1: if it's not going to be Aaron Rodgers and Raybon,
- 28:12Speaker 1: You've been writing for seven years that Aaron Rodgers was
- 28:16Speaker 1: on the down side of his career and using really
- 28:20Speaker 1: thoughtful stats and analysis to back it up. We saw
- 28:24Speaker 1: a lot of it last year. I think a lot
- 28:26Speaker 1: of people are going to be enamored with a three
- 28:29Speaker 1: four game stretch where all of a sudden he looked healthy,
- 28:32Speaker 1: Maybe he was getting a little bit better production, you know,
- 28:34Speaker 1: with the four or five times they saw him make
- 28:39Speaker 1: the exact throw that only Aaron Rodgers can make, and
- 28:42Speaker 1: all of a sudden he's going to pair with Mike
- 28:45Speaker 1: Tomlin and hit dk Metcalf down the field, and that's
- 28:50Speaker 1: going to be the difference. I'm not saying it. Yeah,
- 28:56Speaker 1: just not a thing. It's not a thing. It's not
- 28:59Speaker 1: a thing. Signon, it's not a thing.
- 29:03Speaker 2: I like to move though for them, And you know,
- 29:06Speaker 2: we'll give some flowers to our guy Peter King, where
- 29:09Speaker 2: I told you two months ago, Peter King said that
- 29:11Speaker 2: he thought Rogers was going to go to the Steelers,
- 29:13Speaker 2: and it's like, clearly the Steelers have been putting out
- 29:16Speaker 2: there they like him that long ago. For Peter King,
- 29:19Speaker 2: who doesn't say much in the media, to come out
- 29:21Speaker 2: and say that, so you know, that was a big
- 29:24Speaker 2: deal to me. I think it's another spot of yeah,
- 29:27Speaker 2: they're not gonna win a super Bowl because of it.
- 29:29Speaker 2: But I feel like Christi has nailed it, Like we're
- 29:31Speaker 2: not betting the under on their win total this year,
- 29:33Speaker 2: Like that's the exact quarterback they get in there to
- 29:36Speaker 2: get to somehow get the nine or ten wins. Like
- 29:38Speaker 2: this is the perfect match for them, and if he
- 29:41Speaker 2: doesn't go there, it sucks for them because they're probably
- 29:44Speaker 2: still going to get to the seven wins somehow. It
- 29:46Speaker 2: doesn't matter who the quarterback is going to be, even
- 29:47Speaker 2: if it's you know, Mason Rudolph, whoever they bring in there.
- 29:50Speaker 2: But it's a Tomlin magic man. It's just crazy how
- 29:57Speaker 2: he can just take trash and make it work. It's
- 29:59Speaker 2: the same reason Russell Wilson is radioactive right now. No
- 30:02Speaker 2: one signed him, right no one. No one actually believes it.
- 30:05Speaker 2: No one understands how that man won so many games
- 30:08Speaker 2: that Steelers team last year. It's all part of that
- 30:09Speaker 2: Steelers of magic. So yeah, going back to these different
- 30:13Speaker 2: teams and how they run their organization. There's just some
- 30:16Speaker 2: teams shad they're just dumb and they overthink. I mean,
- 30:18Speaker 2: the biggest one that jumps out to me has to
- 30:20Speaker 2: be the Giants. Right this offseason, Giants just sign Slayton,
- 30:24Speaker 2: a wide receiver two to thirty nine to thirty eight
- 30:27Speaker 2: million dollars three years, thirty eight million. That's the same
- 30:30Speaker 2: amount they passed on paying Saquon the year before. So
- 30:33Speaker 2: it's like, none of these things make sense when you
- 30:36Speaker 2: really break it down to its core, because these teams
- 30:39Speaker 2: just overthink stuff. And like we talk of the time,
- 30:41Speaker 2: the salar cap is just going to keep going up.
- 30:43Speaker 2: So people will be like, did you say how much
- 30:45Speaker 2: so and so got paid? Yeah, it looks stupid on paper,
- 30:48Speaker 2: but it's like the salard cap just keeps going up.
- 30:50Speaker 2: That's why you know, as an Eagles fan, I think
- 30:54Speaker 2: this is the first off season of my life that
- 30:56Speaker 2: we are the team that is just losing people left
- 30:59Speaker 2: and right while not bringing anybody in. And honestly, it's
- 31:02Speaker 2: the greatest feeling in the world. It's like, holy shit,
- 31:05Speaker 2: we are the best, one of the best drafting teams
- 31:08Speaker 2: in football. That all we're so good. All we can
- 31:10Speaker 2: do is sign our own guys and we have to
- 31:12Speaker 2: let other guys walk. Where Even last year, our two
- 31:15Speaker 2: super Bowl winning moves were Zach Brawn and Sakuon Barkley,
- 31:19Speaker 2: two free agent signings at this time of year. So
- 31:22Speaker 2: to me, that's for a lot of teams out there
- 31:23Speaker 2: where like you know, we pooh pooh f agent signings.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Shit does matter if you have the right GM and
- 31:28Speaker 2: making the right moves. These are the type of things
- 31:31Speaker 2: that can set you up for Super Bowl. But on
- 31:32Speaker 2: the flip side, you can set your team back four
- 31:35Speaker 2: or five years in a really bad fregency move where
- 31:38Speaker 2: you're spending all this money like Tennessee last year. Think
- 31:40Speaker 2: of Tennessee. They spent all that money chat just to
- 31:42Speaker 2: be the number one pick. It's just that's what's so
- 31:46Speaker 2: brutal about this time of year. It's like, I don't
- 31:47Speaker 2: want to shit on everyone's team. They're sharing teams. You
- 31:49Speaker 2: look at side at it, You're just like, man, this
- 31:51Speaker 2: is they're gonna be the exact same spot four or
- 31:53Speaker 2: five years, cutting these guys on these big contracts, and
- 31:56Speaker 2: it's just it's just bad money spending. So I don't
- 31:58Speaker 2: know how you view it. But I'm of that mentality
- 32:00Speaker 2: of there's some teams that are nailing it, like the Bears,
- 32:03Speaker 2: and there's other teams who are just like this team
- 32:05Speaker 2: is going to be spending their tires for another three
- 32:07Speaker 2: four years, like New Orleans Saints and a couple of
- 32:10Speaker 2: other teams.
- 32:11Speaker 1: It's clear you and I talked about this a couple
- 32:13Speaker 1: of weeks ago. It's clear there are franchises you just
- 32:17Speaker 1: don't want to be a fan of right now. The Saints,
- 32:18Speaker 1: the Browns, the Titans, like, these are teams that are flailing.
- 32:22Speaker 1: They don't know what they're doing. They don't have the
- 32:24Speaker 1: personnel in their executive suites to be making indecisions to
- 32:28Speaker 1: help put them in a position to be successful five
- 32:32Speaker 1: years down the road. Howie Roseman, I feel like he
- 32:37Speaker 1: is sitting in his office in Philadelphia. He's looking at
- 32:42Speaker 1: his board and feeling so good about the position he
- 32:47Speaker 1: has put his team in because, yeah, they've lost CJ. Gardner, Johnson,
- 32:53Speaker 1: they are losing Milton Williams, but he has loaded his
- 32:58Speaker 1: defensive line, he has loaded is defensive backfield. He's got
- 33:02Speaker 1: Cooper dejen right, He's got Quinja and Mitchell Like he
- 33:06Speaker 1: has made such good moves and he's probably looking at
- 33:08Speaker 1: this thinking, I know how to draft, I know what
- 33:11Speaker 1: I'm looking for in a player. I will be able
- 33:14Speaker 1: to backfill these roles as people price themselves out and
- 33:18Speaker 1: get their big, mega deals elsewhere, and we will be
- 33:21Speaker 1: totally fine. I feel like the Eagles are flying high.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Yeah, he didn't hesitate either, which I give tons ahead
- 33:29Speaker 2: of credit to Howie where he paid the guys were
- 33:32Speaker 2: other teams like the Bengals, I mean talk about disaster
- 33:36Speaker 2: right like they didn't. They couldn't get the deal with
- 33:38Speaker 2: them Don last year. Chase Now it's gonna be another
- 33:41Speaker 2: extra twenty thirty million, top whatever he was asking last year.
- 33:44Speaker 2: T Higgins. I don't even think whatever they throwed him,
- 33:46Speaker 2: I think he's gonna walk regardless. He fucking hates the Bengals,
- 33:49Speaker 2: like the fact they tagged him again and someone put
- 33:53Speaker 2: up a great stat of Joe Burrow and Hurts got
- 33:55Speaker 2: a contract in the same offseason. The Eagles have spent
- 33:58Speaker 2: like three hundred million since then on players to resign
- 34:01Speaker 2: to their team. The Bengals have spent like twenty thirty million.
- 34:05Speaker 2: So it just shows you how stupid these franchise can be.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Where you know, you just need to make the money work.
- 34:09Speaker 2: But I'm with you in the sense that you know
- 34:13Speaker 2: obviously how he's nailing this offseason. But you know, we
- 34:16Speaker 2: talk all the time. There's moves that teams make that
- 34:19Speaker 2: are terrible, Like we we had a couple signings last
- 34:21Speaker 2: year of guys that we're paying twenty million dollars to
- 34:23Speaker 2: that never touched the field for us. And that's just
- 34:26Speaker 2: how it is. Right, You're not always gonna nail. You
- 34:27Speaker 2: don't win them all exactly, and I think it's probabilistic,
- 34:32Speaker 2: and people get too obsessed with the misses where it's like,
- 34:35Speaker 2: on your team, success is making the playoffs. I know
- 34:38Speaker 2: people don't want to hear that, but it really is.
- 34:40Speaker 2: I know, it's like why I want more. Right, if
- 34:42Speaker 2: you're you're a fan of the Bills and Josh Allen,
- 34:44Speaker 2: you're like, take the MVP. I could give two shits
- 34:47Speaker 2: about winning the MVP. I won a Super Bowl, Like,
- 34:49Speaker 2: I get that perspective, but take a deep breath, you
- 34:52Speaker 2: could be the fucking Jets. So that's what I always
- 34:54Speaker 2: try to tell people, where it's like, yeah, you want
- 34:56Speaker 2: to win the Super Bowl. The Bill is of course
- 34:58Speaker 2: you want to be nothing around for thirty forty years,
- 35:01Speaker 2: Like you want people still talking about Joe fucking Nameth. No,
- 35:05Speaker 2: Like that's literally living in hell. So that's why I
- 35:07Speaker 2: always try to have perspective of this where it's like,
- 35:10Speaker 2: you know, this this Bill's team. You know, they had
- 35:12Speaker 2: a couple moves this offseason that you were like, I
- 35:15Speaker 2: don't know what they're doing. Then they come and they
- 35:16Speaker 2: signed that contract with Josh Allen. You're like, that's why
- 35:18Speaker 2: they're a great organization, right, they got Josh Alla, would
- 35:21Speaker 2: take a great deal, left some money on the table
- 35:23Speaker 2: to go get other guys, And it's like, that's what
- 35:25Speaker 2: great teams do. They don't give Dak Prescott sixty five
- 35:28Speaker 2: million dollars at the last minute to come play for them.
- 35:31Speaker 2: So it's like you really are seeing which teams are
- 35:34Speaker 2: going to keep going up and which teams just feel
- 35:36Speaker 2: like they're going to keep going down. And that's that's
- 35:38Speaker 2: the most interesting part of the offseason. You kind kind
- 35:40Speaker 2: of see they're right on the wall at.
- 35:41Speaker 1: This point, Simon. Before NFL free agency officially kicks off,
- 35:45Speaker 1: fans are treated to an even more exciting period, the
- 35:48Speaker 1: legal tampering period. This thrilling two day extravaganza lets teams
- 35:53Speaker 1: and agents discuss free agents and agree to terms before

- 36:35Speaker 1: Tommy John in twenty twenty.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Five because comfort is king Right.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Now, you can shop Tommy John dot com slash favorites
- 36:42Speaker 1: and can twenty five percent off your first order save
- 36:46Speaker 1: twenty five percent at Tommy John dot com slash favorites.
- 36:49Speaker 1: That's Tommy John dot com slash favorites. I'm just going
- 36:52Speaker 1: to say, I feel like that was a stretch in
- 36:56Speaker 1: terms of the metaphor. You know, wasn't as easy, Simon, Yeah,
- 37:02Speaker 1: what are you laughing at?
- 37:03Speaker 2: Just I love Van Mitchell has comments. He just wrote
- 37:05Speaker 2: feedback as a gift the best.
- 37:07Speaker 1: Wow, that's right. I didn't see that so Ray, But
- 37:11Speaker 1: I want your take on this. Simon just said there
- 37:13Speaker 1: are teams that the goal is to make the playoffs,
- 37:17Speaker 1: and that there are teams that are perennial perennially pathetic,
- 37:20Speaker 1: like the Jets, and teams like the Bills who your
- 37:24Speaker 1: goal is to win the title. At what point does
- 37:30Speaker 1: your feeling as a fan that making the playoffs is
- 37:34Speaker 1: the right thing start to wear thin? I e a
- 37:38Speaker 1: lot of blowback on the Steelers right now. Is it
- 37:42Speaker 1: enough to just consistently be good and make the playoffs?
- 37:45Speaker 1: They want more? Or are the expectations too high? When
- 37:50Speaker 1: is it time to blow it up? And are the
- 37:52Speaker 1: Steelers there?
- 37:55Speaker 3: We think no? So I think the thing that people
- 37:59Speaker 3: don't get and it's frustrating as a fan when your
- 38:01Speaker 3: team is kind of stuck in that you know, quote
- 38:03Speaker 3: unquote purgatory, but it's really like the upper class purgatory
- 38:07Speaker 3: if you're just making the playoffs every year or finishing
- 38:10Speaker 3: with a five hundred or better record. I think with
- 38:13Speaker 3: the Steelers, it's just really come down to they haven't
- 38:16Speaker 3: had the quarterback and you're not going to You're not.
- 38:21Speaker 3: You could win it because of other guys, but not
- 38:24Speaker 3: without a quarterback, you know, Like the Eagles got through
- 38:27Speaker 3: a lot of the year Jayalen Hurts sometimes he didn't
- 38:29Speaker 3: have to do much. A lot of the time he
- 38:31Speaker 3: didn't have to do much. But when it counted, Jayalen
- 38:34Speaker 3: Hurts was a week and that's just that's the Eagles.
- 38:38Speaker 3: Then that speaks to Howie Roseman. The Steelers just haven't
- 38:41Speaker 3: really had that. They you know, they got one with
- 38:44Speaker 3: h with Big Ben. They were in a couple there
- 38:46Speaker 3: and then it just got a lot worse. So the
- 38:50Speaker 3: thing about a high floor is if you want a
- 38:54Speaker 3: high ceiling, if you're locking in a high floor, then
- 38:58Speaker 3: you know your ceiling's gonna be higher because you know,
- 39:01Speaker 3: it's correlated like that. At the end of the day,
- 39:03Speaker 3: I would much rather be this be the Steelers and
- 39:06Speaker 3: just be like a quarterback away, you know, every year,
- 39:11Speaker 3: then kind of have no you know, dude, like be
- 39:14Speaker 3: the Giants who I think ownership has just meddled ever
- 39:19Speaker 3: since the end of it got really bad at the
- 39:23Speaker 3: end of Eui Mann's career after he had won those
- 39:25Speaker 3: couple and then around that bench at the time they
- 39:27Speaker 3: benched him for Gina, Like everything just unraveled there and
- 39:30Speaker 3: you could see it. The Jets have been the same
- 39:31Speaker 3: way the last couple of decades. You know, they keep
- 39:34Speaker 3: throwing the same thing at the wall in different ways
- 39:37Speaker 3: and just doesn't stick. So I don't think the stealer.
- 39:40Speaker 3: I think the Steelers are a model organization. But unfortunately
- 39:46Speaker 3: this this is why you know, Josh Allen got three
- 39:48Speaker 3: hundred and thirty million dollars and we're over here saying,
- 39:50Speaker 3: you know, he left money on the table, because that's
- 39:53Speaker 3: how much quarterbacks do matter for certain teams, and you
- 39:57Speaker 3: know they they do matter in general, but for a
- 40:00Speaker 3: team Mike, the Steelers, that that it meant everything because
- 40:03Speaker 3: that's the difference. You know, they were trotting out Kenny
- 40:05Speaker 3: Pickett justin fields, uh, the ghost of Russell Wilson, Mason Rudolph,
- 40:11Speaker 3: Like that's that's why the Steelers aren't going Yeah exactly, Yeah,
- 40:16Speaker 3: So that's that that's that's that's really what it is.
- 40:19Speaker 3: But yeah, there's teams like we saw with the Giants,
- 40:21Speaker 3: they Joe Shane has no idea. Well, he like he
- 40:25Speaker 3: makes some moves that turn out good, and but when
- 40:28Speaker 3: he starts going through his thought processes, and I'm sure
- 40:31Speaker 3: this has a lot to do with ownership too, and
- 40:32Speaker 3: there's things we're not seeing. But uh, it's just a
- 40:37Speaker 3: lot of these movies don't don't quite make sense to me.
- 40:39Speaker 3: And then a lot of them are just kind of
- 40:40Speaker 3: fixing other things. And uh, you know, even like the
- 40:45Speaker 3: like now you signed it, paulsing the debo, but like
- 40:48Speaker 3: what if you don't, like I don't you know, I
- 40:50Speaker 3: wouldn't want to put myself in position to where if
- 40:53Speaker 3: I didn't get a quarterback, like I could just take Hunter,
- 40:56Speaker 3: and I don't. I don't know if you still do
- 40:58Speaker 3: that now. So like it's I just think. I just
- 41:00Speaker 3: think there's a lot going on with ownership. And that's
- 41:02Speaker 3: why the Giants and the Jets, you know you heard
- 41:05Speaker 3: mad ratings and things like that, those two teams in particular,
- 41:09Speaker 3: that's why he keeps seeing them just struggle for the
- 41:11Speaker 3: better part of a couple of decades.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Now, Josh Allen got a quarter of a billion dollars
- 41:18Speaker 1: guaranteed guaranteed.
- 41:21Speaker 2: How many quarterbacks have you ever seen hurdle anyone. Goodness,
- 41:24Speaker 2: there's no field, no way.
- 41:26Speaker 1: And by the way, when he can go for a
- 41:30Speaker 1: new contract, he's going to be thirty two years old.
- 41:33Speaker 1: He could make half a billion dollars in real money
- 41:37Speaker 1: over the next eight years, guaranteed. Imagine that just from football,
- 41:43Speaker 1: just from football football, he could end up with five
- 41:46Speaker 1: hundred million dollars.
- 41:49Speaker 2: And just from my perspective of like we're talking about
- 41:52Speaker 2: quarterbacks here is that's the beautiful thing about football is
- 41:55Speaker 2: you don't need Josh Allen. Usually Josh Allen doesn't get
- 41:58Speaker 2: you shit in football, right, Like we've seen it time
- 42:01Speaker 2: and time again. These great quarterbacks. It's not their fault,
- 42:04Speaker 2: right because it is a team sport, but there's so
- 42:06Speaker 2: much he goes into it in that the fact that
- 42:08Speaker 2: you know, right now in the NFL, we're in a
- 42:10Speaker 2: weird spot chat where we've had a run of dynasties.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Right We've had the chiefs in the Patriots dynasty. So
- 42:14Speaker 2: right now, you know, if you want to count Russell
- 42:16Speaker 2: Wilson to start in the league, we have four quarterbacks
- 42:18Speaker 2: that are starters that have won super Bowls in football
- 42:20Speaker 2: right now. Right Stafford Mahomes Hertz and Russell Wilson. That's
- 42:25Speaker 2: really unique. Like there's thirty two teams, there's only four starters.
- 42:29Speaker 1: That is an insane stat Yeah.
- 42:31Speaker 2: And like that kind of things because I want to
- 42:33Speaker 2: bring people in perspective of it's so tough to get
- 42:36Speaker 2: there and actually do it, like you need so much
- 42:39Speaker 2: fucking luck. I mean, think about the shape of a football.
- 42:42Speaker 2: It's the weirder shaped ball in all major sports. You
- 42:45Speaker 2: don't know which way that fucking thing is gonna bounce, Like,
- 42:47Speaker 2: you know, even hanging around Eagles fans, how cocky they
- 42:50Speaker 2: are talking about all the fumbles we got in the
- 42:52Speaker 2: playoffs and how that helped us get to the super Bowl.
- 42:55Speaker 2: It's like they don't know where that ball is gonna
- 42:56Speaker 2: bounce and he punched that shit out, Like it's all
- 42:58Speaker 2: this random things to add up to them getting to
- 43:01Speaker 2: the Super Bowl winning it. And obviously you know that
- 43:03Speaker 2: was a crazy runof they had the most points ever
- 43:05Speaker 2: in that Super Bowl history era of points in the playoffs, right,
- 43:10Speaker 2: that was a very unique team. But at the core
- 43:13Speaker 2: of football this way, I'll never get all these different
- 43:15Speaker 2: teams in the moves they make. We've had years of
- 43:17Speaker 2: Jimmy Garoppolo making it to a fucking super Bowl. Brock
- 43:20Speaker 2: Purdy made it to a super Bowl, Like you can
- 43:23Speaker 2: make it there with below average quarterbacks that are trying
- 43:25Speaker 2: to buy really good talent on their teams. And I think,
- 43:28Speaker 2: you know, the greatest team and player ever in my
- 43:31Speaker 2: mind of this example are those Eli Manning Giant teams. Right.
- 43:36Speaker 2: He never made the playoffs and did anything when he
- 43:38Speaker 2: did make it, he won fucking super Bowls. And that
- 43:41Speaker 2: was kind of thing where that team drafted right on
- 43:43Speaker 2: their D line. They had Spags the decoordinator, and then
- 43:47Speaker 2: they had Elon who had that clutch gene with plexico
- 43:50Speaker 2: and they had a good run game. All those things
- 43:51Speaker 2: got into it. But it's like too many these teams
- 43:53Speaker 2: want to be perfect, right, They want to make the
- 43:55Speaker 2: perfect team, get a top five quarterback and make it
- 43:57Speaker 2: all work. You don't need all that in football, Like
- 44:00Speaker 2: there's so much that goes into it. So that's why
- 44:02Speaker 2: I think we're in a weird spot right now where
- 44:04Speaker 2: these teams are. You know, they're chasing different teams trying
- 44:06Speaker 2: to copy their what they how they built their teams out.
- 44:09Speaker 2: I told you last year I had heard from people
- 44:11Speaker 2: in the Eaglo organization that they were going to copy
- 44:14Speaker 2: the forty nine ers that they when they saw what
- 44:16Speaker 2: Christian McCaffrey did to that offense. Howie who has never
- 44:19Speaker 2: paid running back in his whole life. So I don't
- 44:22Speaker 2: fucking care. The NFL has changed two ice safeties is
- 44:25Speaker 2: a real thing. I'm going out there. I'm getting what
- 44:27Speaker 2: I think is the best running back in football. You.
- 44:30Speaker 2: I mean, I'm sure you've seen all the conferences him
- 44:31Speaker 2: talking Saquon. It's like he literally said to the dude,
- 44:34Speaker 2: you're the reason we just won the Super Bowl, Like
- 44:36Speaker 2: you were the difference that we needed that we didn't
- 44:38Speaker 2: have two years ago, and teams out there that wanted
- 44:41Speaker 2: to do it this year, there was no running back
- 44:43Speaker 2: out there to do that. Now we have this draft
- 44:45Speaker 2: coming up with Gentry and there's a couple of guys
- 44:47Speaker 2: out there that I think are game changers. But you
- 44:50Speaker 2: definitely saw this year in the fergency class that teams
- 44:53Speaker 2: weren't going to be like, Okay, there's a saque there's
- 44:55Speaker 2: Derrick Henry out there, because there isn't. You've seen a pullback,
- 44:58Speaker 2: and like we talked about, they've attacked the offense to
- 45:00Speaker 2: line the defensive lines, because to me, this draft class
- 45:03Speaker 2: has really good running backs. So it's gonna interesting in
- 45:05Speaker 2: this draft coming up. Does Gentry go in the top ten?
- 45:08Speaker 2: Do teams reach for him because they think they're a
- 45:11Speaker 2: piece away your Bears team, Chad, I wouldn't hate them
- 45:14Speaker 2: taking him. Like, there's certain teams I feel like you
- 45:16Speaker 2: could add him and they're gonna be in the same
- 45:18Speaker 2: position as what we've seen this Eagles team Detroit. I mean,
- 45:22Speaker 2: look what they've done getting running backs right, that's kind
- 45:24Speaker 2: of changed the whole organization. So I do think that
- 45:27Speaker 2: we're going to this weird time where people are like
- 45:29Speaker 2: so obsessed with quarterbacks like we all are. It's fun
- 45:32Speaker 2: make a top five, top ten list when it really
- 45:35Speaker 2: does matter. All these other pieces have been so important.
- 45:37Speaker 2: I would love your Chris's view on that, if he's
- 45:39Speaker 2: got to view on these running back classes coming out.
- 45:41Speaker 3: Well, yeah, that's the first thing I was gonna bring
- 45:43Speaker 3: up with. Yeah, genty is the favorite now to go
- 45:47Speaker 3: to the Chicago Bears, which because they address their offensive line.
- 45:52Speaker 3: You know, everyone thought they were going to take the
- 45:53Speaker 3: offensive line. Now they have some options, So totally agree.
- 45:57Speaker 3: I think it. Like I said at the end of
- 45:59Speaker 3: the day with the Bears is gonna come down, Okay,
- 46:01Speaker 3: But Williams, that's the guy who has shown it, and
- 46:03Speaker 3: we know he has a talent, but he hasn't proven
- 46:06Speaker 3: it yet. You're like, ask Jacksonville, you know how they're
- 46:09Speaker 3: doing with that? So like that's that's that's The Bears
- 46:12Speaker 3: have everything around him, I think. But the one I
- 46:16Speaker 3: was going to bring up, since we were talking about
- 46:18Speaker 3: Josh Allen and just how Portanty's running backs are in
- 46:20Speaker 3: the playoffs, what did the Bills lean on. It wasn't
- 46:24Speaker 3: Josh Allen throwing the football. It was James Cook who
- 46:28Speaker 3: turned into an absolute monster. And the every week it
- 46:31Speaker 3: seem like James Cook was undervalued, even in the touchdown market,
- 46:34Speaker 3: which is a notoriously inflated market. You know, he was undervalued,
- 46:40Speaker 3: and it's because they saw something in James Cook. You know,
- 46:44Speaker 3: he got a lot more physical Uh, he had the
- 46:46Speaker 3: speed he can catch it and run. And that's a
- 46:49Speaker 3: big thing that those three down backs are coming back
- 46:51Speaker 3: into Bogue a little bit, I know. And and then
- 46:53Speaker 3: the Bills also had Tdy Johnson coming out of nowhere
- 46:56Speaker 3: playing really well. Made that crazy catch in the UH
- 46:59Speaker 3: against the in the playoffs. So I think running backs
- 47:02Speaker 3: are it kind of got to that low point in
- 47:05Speaker 3: the market where I think they had like a conference
- 47:07Speaker 3: or a meeting with all them at one point and
- 47:10Speaker 3: trying to figure out how they can increase their value. Well,
- 47:13Speaker 3: I think they have. So the fact that we're talking
- 47:15Speaker 3: about Ashton Jens as good as he's been, you know,
- 47:18Speaker 3: usually those kind of running backs, it's like, all right,
- 47:20Speaker 3: you know they're great in college, and then everyone's still
- 47:23Speaker 3: talking about you know, pick twenty, picked thirty, second round, nah,
- 47:28Speaker 3: gents is like they're talking about him going fifth, sixtyes,
- 47:32Speaker 3: and so uh yeah. I think the Eagles kind of
- 47:35Speaker 3: paved the way with one of the probably the best
- 47:37Speaker 3: GM in the game, giving Saquon bark We a massive
- 47:41Speaker 3: deal and it worked out, and and and then the
- 47:45Speaker 3: Bills we saw them Meano and James Cook, even when
- 47:47Speaker 3: they had Josh Allen and every week we're like, where's Cooper,
- 47:50Speaker 3: Where's you know, who's gonna where's dog King k? Where's
- 47:53Speaker 3: all these guys, James Cook and Tyd Johnson? So yeah,
- 47:57Speaker 3: in the ravens Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry.
- 48:00Speaker 1: So Raybon, who do you think is in Simon? I
- 48:05Speaker 1: want you to answer this too. The Washington Commanders last year,
- 48:10Speaker 1: they blew up the league. Jaden Daniels was brilliant. Obviously,
- 48:15Speaker 1: you mentioned we started the show talking about Laramie Tunsel
- 48:18Speaker 1: going to the Commanders. But what was interesting about the
- 48:21Speaker 1: Commanders obviously was Jaden Daniels' performance, but their willingness to
- 48:30Speaker 1: lean into the analytics in high leverage situations, especially on
- 48:35Speaker 1: fourth downs, especially on fourth and three, four, five, in
- 48:40Speaker 1: that range, way outside of the red zone, doing it
- 48:45Speaker 1: consistently explosive plays coming from Jaden Daniels. It's funny we
- 48:51Speaker 1: talk about the NFL. You watch these games and like
- 48:55Speaker 1: every single week, whether it's raybon Kern or me Simon Stuckey,
- 49:00Speaker 1: we're talking about these games as if they will play
- 49:03Speaker 1: out according to sort of methodical pacing, what we expect
- 49:08Speaker 1: to be normalized play calling, what we expect to be
- 49:13Speaker 1: perfect play, and teams to play in the manner in
- 49:15Speaker 1: which the overall stats say they're going to play. It
- 49:18Speaker 1: always comes down to the explosive play. It comes down
- 49:21Speaker 1: to the fourth down call, it comes down to the
- 49:25Speaker 1: deep out, it comes down to the blown coverage, whatever
- 49:29Speaker 1: it is. That's why betting is exciting because all of
- 49:32Speaker 1: a sudden you're like, oh, I was only one play away,
- 49:36Speaker 1: or oh I got this play right. Those are the
- 49:39Speaker 1: difference makers when you're talking about betting. Who will be
- 49:44Speaker 1: the commanders of this season? The team that leans into
- 49:46Speaker 1: the high leverage situations.
- 49:48Speaker 3: I got an answer, I think, give it to me.
- 49:51Speaker 1: What's a fucking podcast? Give me your answer.
- 49:53Speaker 3: Not just it's not just that, it's I think they
- 49:56Speaker 3: have the talent too. And think about it like this,
- 50:00Speaker 3: who's been the best team against the spread over the
- 50:04Speaker 3: past few years. It's been the Detroit Lions. Right, They've
- 50:08Speaker 3: just been They've just been cover machines. The team that
- 50:12Speaker 3: I think last year I was saying they were kind
- 50:14Speaker 3: of a poor man's Lions, But they have the talent
- 50:18Speaker 3: to be just as good. Tampa Bay Baker Mayfield interesting,
- 50:27Speaker 3: could be the next take On or somebody like that.
- 50:31Speaker 3: They got an offensive line, they got they got a
- 50:34Speaker 3: secondary they you know, they took some stabs at pass
- 50:38Speaker 3: rush with Reddick, and but they got a defensive coach,
- 50:41Speaker 3: So you don't worry too much about the defense. Defense
- 50:43Speaker 3: has pieces. I mean, what what's stopping the Bucks from
- 50:47Speaker 3: from being like the Mayfield Bucks? The in the for
- 50:51Speaker 3: being the goth Lions, who everyone thought was going to
- 50:52Speaker 3: be in the Super Bowl over the Eagles last year.
- 50:54Speaker 3: That's the team that I think is just severely overlooked.
- 50:59Speaker 1: Sign and what do you think of that?
- 51:01Speaker 2: I love it. People are gonna hate this because this
- 51:03Speaker 2: feels like a way too heavy Bears podcast, but I
- 51:07Speaker 2: have to go with the Bears, like this is the
- 51:09Speaker 2: team that all I do is my favorite thing. That
- 51:11Speaker 2: bet is on second year players, right and especially quarterbacks
- 51:15Speaker 2: making that second year jump. And we've seen it time
- 51:18Speaker 2: and time again where it's like guys have all the
- 51:21Speaker 2: tools in the world, they have a bad season, people
- 51:24Speaker 2: leave them for dead, and then the second year something
- 51:27Speaker 2: like Kayleb believe should take that next step. The guy
- 51:29Speaker 2: has all the talent in the world. Now he has
- 51:33Speaker 2: some good coaching, an offensive line, a system. I think
- 51:36Speaker 2: he's going to really thrive in. And again I hope
- 51:39Speaker 2: they get gentry. Like to me, that would be an
- 51:42Speaker 2: insane weapon to add to that team. Have with Kayleb,
- 51:45Speaker 2: bullions from the next five to ten years in that backfield.
- 51:47Speaker 2: And you know, this is a team that me and
- 51:50Speaker 2: Chat talked a Nagenbata last year they were four and
- 51:52Speaker 2: two when they lost a hell Mary game against the Commanders,
- 51:56Speaker 2: like this was a team that was on a trajectory
- 51:58Speaker 2: and we said after they lost, I said, this same
- 52:00Speaker 2: young team, we're gonna find out a lot by the
- 52:02Speaker 2: Chicago team. They're either gonna thrive and you know, bounce
- 52:05Speaker 2: back from this, or they will collapse under their own
- 52:07Speaker 2: weight the rest of the season. And that's what they did.
- 52:10Speaker 2: But the end of the season on such a high
- 52:12Speaker 2: mark like that, I know it sounds stupid. That was
- 52:14Speaker 2: a huge win for green Bay against green Bay and
- 52:17Speaker 2: for Kayleb Williams in my mind going to the offseason
- 52:19Speaker 2: because I think he felt what it could be like
- 52:22Speaker 2: to be a team that should be beating green Bay
- 52:25Speaker 2: at green Bay that can can have these big wins.
- 52:28Speaker 2: So this is a team that I love their offseason.
- 52:30Speaker 2: They're gonna have a last place schedule and I think
- 52:33Speaker 2: it lines up right for them that you know, just
- 52:35Speaker 2: like last year, every's gonna talking about Detroit, every's gonna
- 52:38Speaker 2: be talking about green Bay and last year we had
- 52:40Speaker 2: a lot of people that were coming in on this
- 52:41Speaker 2: Bears team for the excitement. It doesn't feel like that
- 52:44Speaker 2: as we are here in March right there are professionals
- 52:47Speaker 2: like me, you like the Bears, But I'm saying the
- 52:49Speaker 2: general public, I don't turn on Eastpan or FS one
- 52:52Speaker 2: all day, and all they're talking about is the Bears
- 52:54Speaker 2: like they were at this point last year heading into
- 52:56Speaker 2: the draft. So that's a team that I am excited
- 52:59Speaker 2: to buy low on. I'm gonna bet their win total
- 53:01Speaker 2: over I just I love out all lines up for
- 53:03Speaker 2: the year two bump for Kayler Williams and bringing in
- 53:06Speaker 2: such a great offensive mind in Johnson. So it's like
- 53:10Speaker 2: I can't help myself, like this is a team I
- 53:12Speaker 2: always kind of love secretly just because you know, me
- 53:15Speaker 2: and Chad just always kind of love the Bears team.
- 53:17Speaker 2: Obviously for Chad has his reasons, but we admitted to it.
- 53:19Speaker 2: We had a huge whiff on them two years ago
- 53:21Speaker 2: with Justin Fields. This feels totally different than Justin Field's
- 53:24Speaker 2: year two where we fell in love with Justin fields
- 53:27Speaker 2: athleticism in year one, mean chat bet on that upside
- 53:30Speaker 2: and were betting the one hundred and one to win
- 53:32Speaker 2: the Super Bowl. People like that's where we were at
- 53:34Speaker 2: them two years ago. I'm in the same spot now.
- 53:37Speaker 2: It's like I feel like they're better, they're improved. Am
- 53:40Speaker 2: I bet the super Bowl futures? Fuck No, I think
- 53:42Speaker 2: it's like four to one now in most books that
- 53:44Speaker 2: there's no value there at this point. But for them
- 53:47Speaker 2: to shock this division and pull it off, I think
- 53:50Speaker 2: it's a real thing like this is this is gonna
- 53:52Speaker 2: be a legit good team that I don't think enough
- 53:54Speaker 2: people are looking into right now because they're what five
- 53:57Speaker 2: and twelve last year? I get it. It's just to me,
- 54:00Speaker 2: these are the teams I love that. Bet on the
- 54:01Speaker 2: new coach, year two quarterback, whole new offensive line, like
- 54:05Speaker 2: it's it's all lined up there. Chat for this can
- 54:08Speaker 2: take a huge year or two step up in this
- 54:10Speaker 2: Bears team. So that's definite a team just like we
- 54:13Speaker 2: Chris talked about teams we try to ie for that.
- 54:15Speaker 2: No one's really talking about Tampa's the same boat. No
- 54:17Speaker 2: one's talking about eveno the one division last year. I
- 54:19Speaker 2: feel like it's the same thing for the Bears that's
- 54:21Speaker 2: coming year. No one's talking about them enough where I
- 54:23Speaker 2: think they're going to take a major step that people
- 54:25Speaker 2: aren't aware of.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Well, look, I'm glad you said it. I didn't want
- 54:29Speaker 1: to be the one who said when I thought of
- 54:32Speaker 1: this question and I put it in the script. My
- 54:36Speaker 1: answer to this was going to be the Bears because
- 54:39Speaker 1: of Ben Johnson, right like he clearly when he was
- 54:42Speaker 1: with the Lions as the play caller, was comfortable in
- 54:45Speaker 1: these situations that go lean into the analytics and what
- 54:48Speaker 1: the probabilistic thinking and what the percentages is, not on
- 54:52Speaker 1: what the conventional wisdom is. That looks like the safer
- 54:55Speaker 1: play that is going to make you comfortable if you
- 54:59Speaker 1: miss That to me was the answer. I kind of
- 55:03Speaker 1: like Ray, but but it also felt little cliche because
- 55:06Speaker 1: of course, like Ben Johnson, he's the guy. I like
- 55:09Speaker 1: Raybond's answer too. Matt Mitchell, we got to make a note.
- 55:12Speaker 1: I feel like we have to do a future episode
- 55:15Speaker 1: that has focused a lot on the breaking down of
- 55:20Speaker 1: this question and then combining it with will there be
- 55:27Speaker 1: too much examination of rules changes and how it made
- 55:31Speaker 1: coaches think about fourth down and kicking long field goals
- 55:34Speaker 1: versus going forward to them there half of the field
- 55:37Speaker 1: from the impact of the kickoff changes. I want to
- 55:42Speaker 1: unpack that. There's more meat on the bone. Teasing a
- 55:44Speaker 1: future episode, we'll get Raybund back Kerner Stuckey, Nick Giffin,
- 55:49Speaker 1: Simon Little Roundtable, just making a note. People are going
- 55:53Speaker 1: to be excited about that. Giving Matt Mitchell your feedback
