- 2:24Speaker 4: On Tuesday, Canawa County voters went to the polls instead
- 2:27Speaker 4: everybody in West Virginia. Well actually when you look at
- 2:29Speaker 4: the numbers, not a lot of people went, but regardless,
- 2:32Speaker 4: and they selected our guests. Who's with us now to
- 2:34Speaker 4: the Canawa County school Board. She's Lisa Odie and she
- 2:37Speaker 4: joins us now in the Jeric Construction studio.
- 2:39Speaker 5: Is Good morning, Lisa, Welcome to the show.
- 2:41Speaker 6: Hey, good morning day, Thanks for having me.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Thank you for being here. Three people got the nod
- 2:47Speaker 4: to be on the school board on Tuesday, and you
- 2:49Speaker 4: were one of them.
- 2:50Speaker 5: How does that feel.
- 2:52Speaker 6: It's a pretty amazing feeling. I'm kind of overwhelmed. I
- 2:56Speaker 6: mean it seems like I literally got the election results.
- 3:00Speaker 6: It's what ten thirty the other night, and it's been NonStop.
- 3:03Speaker 6: I mean, the job kind of already started. You know,
- 3:07Speaker 6: I've had to contact the board give them some personal information.
- 3:10Speaker 6: I'm hearing from people that I'll be working with. So
- 3:14Speaker 6: but it's great. I mean, my campaign we worked so hard.
- 3:18Speaker 6: It was it was grassroots. It was, you know, just
- 3:21Speaker 6: door to door doing the things so that people understood
- 3:24Speaker 6: my story and where I was coming from. And the
- 3:26Speaker 6: hard work paid off day.
- 3:28Speaker 5: What was it that made you want to run for
- 3:31Speaker 5: Bard of Education? To begin with?
- 3:32Speaker 6: Lisa, Well, whenever I retired about a year ago after
- 3:36Speaker 6: thirty five years in the in the county school system.
- 3:40Speaker 6: You know, my last few years I was a myinerant,
- 3:42Speaker 6: which means a traveling teacher. So I was responsible from
- 3:46Speaker 6: you know, for all buildings in the county K twelve
- 3:49Speaker 6: and so in that position, I started to hear stories
- 3:53Speaker 6: from staff, from families, from students, and I'm thinking, you know,
- 3:57Speaker 6: now that I'm out there and I'm hearing all this,
- 3:59Speaker 6: you know, good and the bad of what people are
- 4:01Speaker 6: seeing with our with our public school system. I thought,
- 4:03Speaker 6: you know, I could be that that liaison. I could
- 4:06Speaker 6: sit on the board. I can kind of bring all
- 4:08Speaker 6: these groups together and you know, see if we can
- 4:10Speaker 6: make a difference with our with our school system.
- 4:13Speaker 5: You know, we're talking to Lisa Odie, who was elected
- 4:16Speaker 5: on Tuesday to be on the Canawa County Boards of
- 4:18Speaker 5: Board of Education. And Lisa, you and I talked here
- 4:20Speaker 5: in your candidate interview. Canawa County schools have some some
- 4:24Speaker 5: big things in front of them. I mean the issues
- 4:26Speaker 5: of cutting budgets, consolidations up schools. We've seen that in
- 4:31Speaker 5: the past, and all these things are on the horizon.
- 4:33Speaker 5: There's a lot of tough decisions that are going to
- 4:35Speaker 5: have to be made as a school board going.
- 4:37Speaker 6: Forward, Oh for sure, you know, and a lot of
- 4:41Speaker 6: it we just have to I think I think part
- 4:44Speaker 6: of it is funding. Of course, all of it's funding.
- 4:46Speaker 6: You know, when you're looking at saftuts, you know, consolidation,
- 4:50Speaker 6: you have to look back at our budget and so
- 4:53Speaker 6: obviously we're having some shortcomings with with the budget that
- 4:56Speaker 6: we have and and and part of my response ability
- 5:00Speaker 6: I feel like as a board member now is to
- 5:03Speaker 6: advocate for our school system. One of the pieces of
- 5:06Speaker 6: my platform, you know, was promising my constituents that I'm
- 5:11Speaker 6: going to be that faith that's the legislature, so that they,
- 5:15Speaker 6: you know, understand where I'm coming from.
- 5:17Speaker 1: That.
- 5:17Speaker 6: You know, we have to make sure our public schools
- 5:19Speaker 6: are fully funded. You know, families are free to choose
- 5:22Speaker 6: how they educate their their their children. I mean, I
- 5:25Speaker 6: have no problem with that, but we also have to
- 5:27Speaker 6: make sure that those who choose public schools get the
- 5:30Speaker 6: you know, free and appropriate education that they're entitled to.
- 5:33Speaker 4: Sorry it again with Lisa Odie, new member of the
- 5:35Speaker 4: Canawk County Board of Education. The Dave Allen Show on
- 5:37Speaker 4: five eighty line, brought to you in part by the
- 5:39Speaker 4: all New Generations Ford of Hurricane Visit Generations for dot Com.
- 5:42Speaker 4: I want to ask you, how was the campaign? I mean,
- 5:44Speaker 4: did you run for office before?
- 5:46Speaker 6: No?
- 5:47Speaker 2: Never?
- 5:48Speaker 6: No never. I mean this is all brand new to me,
- 5:53Speaker 6: you know, I think I think what was key for me?
- 5:56Speaker 6: You know, I hit the ground running with pre candidacy.
- 5:59Speaker 6: I was there the first day in September when you
- 6:01Speaker 6: could file for that, and I didn't stop. I mean
- 6:04Speaker 6: day after I did that. We were fundraising, We were
- 6:07Speaker 6: you know, trying to get my name out there, you know,
- 6:11Speaker 6: just constantly. I mean I did not have a free weekend,
- 6:14Speaker 6: I don't think until maybe in March, because every weekend
- 6:18Speaker 6: we were consumed with, you know, going door to door,
- 6:20Speaker 6: talking to the voters, seeing what their issues were, getting
- 6:24Speaker 6: the signs out, doing all the you know, the media
- 6:28Speaker 6: things that we needed to do just to make people,
- 6:30Speaker 6: you know, understand where I was coming from and why
- 6:32Speaker 6: I was doing what I was doing.
- 6:34Speaker 4: Some of the questions I'm asking you are things that
- 6:36Speaker 4: we covered in the candidates interviews that we did, but
- 6:38Speaker 4: just in case people didn't hear it, your background, you
- 6:42Speaker 4: referenced it at the top of the interview. With so
- 6:45Speaker 4: many years that you had in the school system in
- 6:47Speaker 4: a variety of roles, why do you think that will
- 6:49Speaker 4: will help you out in this new role as a
- 6:51Speaker 4: board member.
- 6:53Speaker 6: Well, because, like I said, you know, I've been at
- 6:55Speaker 6: all level. I've worked with all levels of kanall county schools,
- 6:59Speaker 6: you know, public, and I've worked with administrators. You know,
- 7:03Speaker 6: I've had principles in buildings that I had relationships with.
- 7:06Speaker 6: Then once I was that traveling teacher that I tenerant
- 7:08Speaker 6: reading specialists. You know, I was meeting with teachers one
- 7:11Speaker 6: on one. I was working with students one on one.
- 7:14Speaker 6: You know, my teaching didn't stop when I took that position. Actually,
- 7:17Speaker 6: what I would do is I would come up with
- 7:19Speaker 6: a plan as a team, the teacher, the administrators, the
- 7:22Speaker 6: families and myself, and we all, you know, hit hit
- 7:25Speaker 6: the ground running with a plan to help students, you know,
- 7:28Speaker 6: achieve reading goals. So I never lost touch with my
- 7:32Speaker 6: classroom rates. And I feel like all of that experiences,
- 7:36Speaker 6: you know, mixed together. You know, it's kind of like
- 7:38Speaker 6: a pot luck thing. But I feel like all of
- 7:40Speaker 6: those experiences made me who I am and be able
- 7:44Speaker 6: to serve on this board.
- 7:47Speaker 4: We had a question that came on the text line
- 7:49Speaker 4: here and it said, can you ask Lisa and the
- 7:50Speaker 4: other new board members uh their plans to attract and
- 7:54Speaker 4: keep students in the county school system. I mean, you
- 7:56Speaker 4: said earlier that you know, parents have the right of
- 7:59Speaker 4: a certain to educate their kids in the way that
- 8:01Speaker 4: they see fit. But you know, keeping kids in public
- 8:03Speaker 4: schools and retaining those kids is a problem.
- 8:06Speaker 5: So how do you how do you plan to go
- 8:08Speaker 5: about that as a board member?
- 8:10Speaker 6: Yeah, well, I feel like, Dave, what we need to
- 8:11Speaker 6: do is we have some great, great staff, curriculums, programs,
- 8:16Speaker 6: you know, from the bottom all the way to the top.
- 8:19Speaker 6: I just feel like we need to make sure people
- 8:21Speaker 6: understand what we can offer, you know, maybe push it
- 8:26Speaker 6: more in the advertising department, you know, make sure that
- 8:29Speaker 6: people are seeing what's going on in the schools. I mean,
- 8:33Speaker 6: I feel like Kennel County Schools, they have a Facebook
- 8:35Speaker 6: page that that does that pretty well. But maybe we
- 8:37Speaker 6: can explore other options to make sure that people understand
- 8:41Speaker 6: what we can give their students a world class education.
- 8:45Speaker 4: You know what, I what I would say if you
- 8:47Speaker 4: didn't ask me, but you know what, I would suggest
- 8:50Speaker 4: a large radio campaign. That's what I would suggest, a
- 8:54Speaker 4: large radio And at w hold on out. At WVRC Media,
- 8:58Speaker 4: we not only do radio, but we were called media,
- 9:01Speaker 4: so we do digital, we do websites, we do geo fencing,
- 9:05Speaker 4: we can do all. I'm just throwing it out there, Lisa,
- 9:07Speaker 4: and I know you don't make the decision, but I'm
- 9:09Speaker 4: just throwing it out there.
- 9:10Speaker 5: And you yourself, you know the power of radio.
- 9:13Speaker 6: I'm just saying I surely do David. I will definitely
- 9:17Speaker 6: keep that in mind. I know that my own personal campaign,
- 9:20Speaker 6: you guys, you know I use that same same media
- 9:24Speaker 6: company that you speak of, for sure, for sure, I
- 9:27Speaker 6: think that's a great idea of day.
- 9:29Speaker 5: We need to get you to do the testimonial.
- 9:30Speaker 4: By the way, before we close, I do want to
- 9:33Speaker 4: mention that Lisa, of course, is part of the uh
- 9:35Speaker 4: of the Carl Lee podcast.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Uh.
- 9:38Speaker 5: And how's that going?
- 9:40Speaker 6: Oh, it's great. You know our team. I just love
- 9:43Speaker 6: doing that podcast with Carl and Hollis. I have the
- 9:46Speaker 6: best people to work with. Uh. It just Jels as
- 9:50Speaker 6: you know, a team, and we've had some great guests
- 9:52Speaker 6: on there. You know, usually the podcast, I think the
- 9:56Speaker 6: podcast airs on Thursdays, but I always share the link
- 9:59Speaker 6: and you can always get WCHS website and get the
- 10:02Speaker 6: link as well.
- 10:03Speaker 5: Yeah, and I always share it on Dave Allen Radio
- 10:04Speaker 5: as well. So as the link against posted.
- 10:06Speaker 4: I want to give you the chance to say thanks
- 10:09Speaker 4: to some people, including the voters. So as I do
- 10:12Speaker 4: in the campaigns, I always say final thirty. So I'm
- 10:14Speaker 4: going to leave it up to you to say whatever
- 10:15Speaker 4: you want to say to the people of Canaan County,
- 10:17Speaker 4: your voters, your supporters, it's your time.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Lisa.
- 10:20Speaker 6: Oh, okay, thank you. So first of all, I want
- 10:23Speaker 6: to thank my husband Jerry Nelson. Oh my goodness. I mean,
- 10:25Speaker 6: I don't think he realized when I became a candidate.
- 10:27Speaker 6: He became a candidate. He's had to endure a lot,
- 10:31Speaker 6: and he's been my rock. Cindy Hamilton played a big part,
- 10:35Speaker 6: Elizabeth and Johnny Thompson, you know, Karen Karen Fox. I mean,
- 10:39Speaker 6: there's just so many names. But really, truly, I have
- 10:42Speaker 6: to thank all of the voters in Kanall County. I
- 10:44Speaker 6: was totally overwhelmed to see the numbers, to see the
- 10:48Speaker 6: people that believed in me, have faith in me. Eastern
- 10:51Speaker 6: Kanah County showed up for me. I'm going to show
- 10:53Speaker 6: up for them. I'm going to show up for the
- 10:54Speaker 6: whole county for sure. So thanks everyone for putting me
- 10:58Speaker 6: in this position, and I look forward to working hard
- 11:01Speaker 6: for our kids' staff, students, families.
- 11:04Speaker 4: All right, Lisa, I appreciate you being here. Lisa Odie
- 11:07Speaker 4: who has now been elected and will take when do
- 11:10Speaker 4: you actually when do you actually take your seat on
- 11:12Speaker 4: the board?
- 11:13Speaker 5: When is that?
- 11:13Speaker 6: I'm pretty sure?
- 11:15Speaker 1: Dave.
- 11:15Speaker 6: I mean, I've got some things coming up in June,
- 11:17Speaker 6: but I think I'm actually this morning in I think
- 11:19Speaker 6: Joely first.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Okay, all right, Lisa Odie, congratulations, appreciate you being here.
- 11:23Speaker 5: Thanks a lot.
- 11:24Speaker 6: Okay, thanks, Dave, have a great one, all right for.

- 15:30Speaker 5: That's that's good stuff right there.
- 15:31Speaker 13: Yeah, this is one that may really holds dearer to
- 15:34Speaker 13: his father actually served as well.
- 15:36Speaker 12: So we try to make it special.
- 15:38Speaker 4: And again it's it's all going to be at noon
- 15:41Speaker 4: on Saturday.
- 15:42Speaker 5: Lineup. We'll begin at eleven o'clock.
- 15:45Speaker 4: The line And I got to give you credit the
- 15:48Speaker 4: City of South Charleston because you know, especially during Christmas season,
- 15:52Speaker 4: we're in all these parades and not going to disparage anybody.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Some are some are more better organized than others, I'll
- 15:58Speaker 4: put it that way. And you guys have there have
- 16:00Speaker 4: got it down to a science, you really do.
- 16:02Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 16:03Speaker 13: And I got to get all that to a man.
- 16:04Speaker 13: And with the Chamber, she does a great job for us.
- 16:07Speaker 13: And then you know our public Works department who blocks
- 16:09Speaker 13: all these trees, soft and stuff, so it's a it's
- 16:11Speaker 13: a great team effort.
- 16:12Speaker 4: And if I understand correctly, you do you need to
- 16:15Speaker 4: let them know ahead of time if you're coming or
- 16:16Speaker 4: do you just show up?
- 16:17Speaker 12: Yeah?
- 16:17Speaker 13: Some you do, but some do actually show up. Yeah,
- 16:19Speaker 13: of course we get them in there.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Who you looking for or who are you looking for
- 16:23Speaker 4: to be in this parade? As I said, our radio
- 16:25Speaker 4: station is going to be there. I know, there's always
- 16:27Speaker 4: a couple of media outlets to a couple of other
- 16:28Speaker 4: radio stations, TV and there.
- 16:30Speaker 5: Who else do you.
- 16:31Speaker 13: Yeah, so there's community grooves, veteran grooves, patriotic groups that
- 16:35Speaker 13: join us for this one.
- 16:36Speaker 4: Okay, And you have a call out to anybody that
- 16:38Speaker 4: you'd like to have there in the parade.
- 16:40Speaker 13: You know, I like to see I think one of
- 16:43Speaker 13: our biggest things I like to do like a fly
- 16:44Speaker 13: over there during the parade. Okay, at some point maybe
- 16:49Speaker 13: like the National Guard or something get involved with that
- 16:51Speaker 13: or something like that a little short.
- 16:52Speaker 4: Time though between now on Saturday, but for the future.
- 16:55Speaker 4: But I'm just saying, like, for this Saturday, is there
- 16:56Speaker 4: anybody out there? I mean, you want like Little League
- 16:59Speaker 4: Team Scout Church we have on them.
- 17:01Speaker 5: Okay, they'll be join us.
- 17:02Speaker 12: Anybody is so much to join, they still can.
- 17:04Speaker 5: What's the best way to do that?
- 17:05Speaker 12: Just they can.
- 17:06Speaker 13: They can call the CVB or visit or visit their
- 17:09Speaker 13: website and uh, there's an application process.
- 17:13Speaker 4: And again, as I said, it all begins at noon
- 17:15Speaker 4: this Saturday. Several of our stations are going to be
- 17:18Speaker 4: there and I'll be there in the ninety eight seven
- 17:20Speaker 4: A mountain truck from our sister station, ninety eight seven
- 17:23Speaker 4: a mountain wild, wonderful classic rock.
- 17:25Speaker 5: Looking forward to it. How are things going with the
- 17:27Speaker 5: farmers Market?
- 17:27Speaker 12: It's going great.
- 17:28Speaker 13: We just came off Mother's Day week and which is
- 17:31Speaker 13: basically considered the super Bowl for farmers Market, and we
- 17:35Speaker 13: actually actually we celebrate our one year anniversary as well.
- 17:38Speaker 13: So it was it was a great turnout and it
- 17:40Speaker 13: was just nice to see everyone there smiling, ham a
- 17:42Speaker 13: great time.
- 17:42Speaker 5: It's great.
- 17:43Speaker 4: I mean, if you've never been to the South Charleston
- 17:45Speaker 4: Farmers Market, it is awesome. I mean you guys have
- 17:47Speaker 4: only been doing it, you know if it's your second year, right.
- 17:49Speaker 12: Yeah, it was a year. It was a year this
- 17:52Speaker 12: past weekend, yea our second year.
- 17:53Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, And uh and and of course with the
- 17:56Speaker 4: Mother's Day weekend. He probably has some special things going
- 17:58Speaker 4: on then as well.
- 17:59Speaker 13: Right, Yeah, we had a Mother's Day celebration. We gave
- 18:02Speaker 13: out Mother's Day gift cards. We had a photo boost
- 18:05Speaker 13: set up, and for our community event, we had the
- 18:07Speaker 13: petting zoo Inflata, bulls, tractor rides and painting and stuff.
- 18:11Speaker 5: Yeah, and what kind of activities have you got to
- 18:13Speaker 5: come it up in the future at the farmers.
- 18:15Speaker 13: So we got one coming up. Our next one will
- 18:18Speaker 13: be June twentieth. I think I'm okay to announce this one. Well.
- 18:22Speaker 13: If not, well they told me I could, so it's
- 18:25Speaker 13: take it up with Frank Moulin. Yeah, it's a West
- 18:27Speaker 13: Virginia Music Hall of Fame. They're gonna be having an
- 18:30Speaker 13: event there on June twentieth.
- 18:31Speaker 5: On West Virginia Day. Yes, that's kind of cool. What
- 18:33Speaker 5: kind of an event, isn't.
- 18:35Speaker 12: It's going to be a music event.
- 18:37Speaker 13: I don't know all the bands and stuff, all that details,
- 18:40Speaker 13: but it'll be from three to six on that day.
- 18:43Speaker 5: I didn't I hadn't really thought about that as a
- 18:45Speaker 5: place to have music. But have you've done that in
- 18:47Speaker 5: the past.
- 18:47Speaker 13: We have done in the past, But I got this
- 18:49Speaker 13: one lined up and I got one in October lined
- 18:51Speaker 13: up as well.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Okay, all right, and now that Mother's Days past that
- 18:55Speaker 4: they always say, and I don't know whether it's true
- 18:57Speaker 4: or not. I don't have a green thumb, but my
- 18:58Speaker 4: wife does, but I don't, but they that after Mother's
- 19:01Speaker 4: Day that's when you're safe to plant and that sort
- 19:03Speaker 4: of thing. What are some things at the farmers market
- 19:05Speaker 4: that maybe people may not think of there because I
- 19:08Speaker 4: know you frequently have food tree fruit, food trucks pretty
- 19:10Speaker 4: much every week.
- 19:10Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean on week is we have our pop
- 19:12Speaker 13: up vendors there with the food trucks and stuff. But
- 19:14Speaker 13: during the week, you know, are are they're open? We
- 19:17Speaker 13: got the flowers, the plants, we got the meats all
- 19:22Speaker 13: during the week, and then why the food trucks and
- 19:24Speaker 13: stuff on the weekends.
- 19:24Speaker 4: And that's something with the meat that you don't normally
- 19:26Speaker 4: think about with a lot of farmers mark thereuse a
- 19:28Speaker 4: lot of it. It's just you know, you're basic producing thing,
- 19:30Speaker 4: which is fine. But you guys got meat there. Yes,
- 19:32Speaker 4: it's all locally raised. We got all the beef cuts,
- 19:35Speaker 4: the chicken cuts, and.
- 19:36Speaker 5: You have different people that come in.
- 19:37Speaker 4: You have some of the people that are that are
- 19:39Speaker 4: there you know pretty much all the time, but you
- 19:40Speaker 4: also have different people that come in like for like
- 19:42Speaker 4: one time appearance.
- 19:43Speaker 13: Right, yeah, I mean yeah, and then what you know,
- 19:45Speaker 13: what's crazy is there's still people coming in that haven't
- 19:48Speaker 13: that they didn't know we were there. Yeah, so we
- 19:50Speaker 13: saw have a lot of new people coming in. So
- 19:52Speaker 13: I mean, it's it's it's going. It's going very very well.
- 19:56Speaker 5: And what are the hours we.
- 19:57Speaker 12: Are money through?
- 19:58Speaker 13: Saturday nine am to six pm and Sunday twelve to four.
- 20:03Speaker 4: And again, I know you've got a Facebook page and
- 20:05Speaker 4: you know you guys do a great job on the
- 20:07Speaker 4: social media there, so we heard you check it out.
- 20:09Speaker 4: Somebody last time you were on the show said, or
- 20:11Speaker 4: maybe it was the time before that you were talking
- 20:12Speaker 4: about it and somebody said, we didn't tell us where
- 20:15Speaker 4: it was. If you, I have a terrible sense of direction.
- 20:17Speaker 4: If you can't find the South Charleston Farmers Market and
- 20:19Speaker 4: you got bigger problems than I do.
- 20:21Speaker 5: It's right by Bob Evans yea at South Charleston.
- 20:23Speaker 13: Yeah, I think everybody they'll say it's the old rever
- 20:26Speaker 13: f N location, or they'll say by Wendy's. But I
- 20:29Speaker 13: always just tell people the address four thousand and six
- 20:31Speaker 13: Macorkwy Avenue or the older mccorkyl.
- 20:33Speaker 4: And you got plenty of parking there too, because you
- 20:35Speaker 4: can park there. Do you have actual parking spots? Plus
- 20:37Speaker 4: you can park along the fence there, yes, if you
- 20:39Speaker 4: want to as well. How do you How do if
- 20:42Speaker 4: people want to come to be a vendor at the
- 20:44Speaker 4: Farmer's Market, how does that?
- 20:45Speaker 1: Yes?
- 20:46Speaker 13: So we have a we have an application process that
- 20:50Speaker 13: they can go on our website to apply and we
- 20:52Speaker 13: continuously review those and we reach out to them if
- 20:57Speaker 13: they're from to fend them in.
- 20:58Speaker 4: All right, and I know i'll i'll we have you
- 21:00Speaker 4: on again before the fourth of July because this is
- 21:02Speaker 4: a big one. You know, this is the two hundred
- 21:03Speaker 4: and fifty celebration of America. I know you guys are
- 21:05Speaker 4: going to have some things planned especially for that.
- 21:09Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 21:10Speaker 13: So actually we had we are opening up a capsule
- 21:12Speaker 13: down down by City Hall, okay that day. I don't
- 21:18Speaker 13: know all the detailed details she has said, but what
- 21:20Speaker 13: will be doing. I think it's a fifty year capsule
- 21:23Speaker 13: that we're going to be opening up.
- 21:24Speaker 4: That's not Old Shaw, just so you know, it's not
- 21:27Speaker 4: that that's not that old for somebody who's fifty five,
- 21:30Speaker 4: that's not that We will give you more information about that.
- 21:32Speaker 4: What else is new going on in South Charleston. I mean,
- 21:35Speaker 4: everybody's of course focuses on and I on election night,
- 21:38Speaker 4: I had the opportunity to interview Frank Mullins, who was
- 21:41Speaker 4: re elected to that position. He was in the primary,
- 21:43Speaker 4: but he didn't have I don't think democratic, I don't
- 21:45Speaker 4: think opposition. But we had a chance to interview him
- 21:48Speaker 4: on our local election coverage and and if I think
- 21:50Speaker 4: he brought up a good point. He said, you know,
- 21:52Speaker 4: people think about South Charleston if everybody focuses on the
- 21:57Speaker 4: new development there, which is great, but there's a lot
- 21:58Speaker 4: of other things going on. But I'm want to focus
- 22:00Speaker 4: on the new stuff right now. What about Kroger? When
- 22:02Speaker 4: when's the Kroger?
- 22:03Speaker 13: Yeah, so they pine on opening up June twenty fourth, Okay,
- 22:06Speaker 13: And then if you actually drive by there, you'll see
- 22:08Speaker 13: two other structures being put up as well, and those
- 22:12Speaker 13: will each house seven different tenants like Pizzas and cream
- 22:16Speaker 13: Hu and Magoose.
- 22:18Speaker 5: And these have already been announced, these places from coming
- 22:20Speaker 5: right Yeah.
- 22:21Speaker 13: And then actually Mission Barbecue, they started construction as well.
- 22:24Speaker 4: Okay, any idea, I mean, I know it's it's kind
- 22:26Speaker 4: of varies, but when do you think it may be
- 22:29Speaker 4: once targeted for this mission.
- 22:30Speaker 13: I think it's projected sometime this summer, okay, Yeah, and
- 22:33Speaker 13: then fully the whole the whole shopping center projected to
- 22:36Speaker 13: be done by the end of twenty twenty seven.
- 22:37Speaker 5: Okay.
- 22:38Speaker 4: And I mean it's you guys been working on this
- 22:40Speaker 4: for a while. And the thing about development of this
- 22:43Speaker 4: large is you're you're depending on so many other factors
- 22:45Speaker 4: that you have no control over, you know, supply chain
- 22:47Speaker 4: issues and weather and things of that nature. But I mean,
- 22:50Speaker 4: as somebody, I'm not a construction guy, but I would say,
- 22:52Speaker 4: in driving by which I just did two days ago,
- 22:56Speaker 4: you guys have really really done a I think a
- 23:00Speaker 4: a great job of getting this thing up quickly. I mean,
- 23:02Speaker 4: you've it looks great or it's gonna look great.
- 23:05Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, the Mayor's on such a great job.
- 23:08Speaker 13: And then you know, because of park Place, it's really
- 23:11Speaker 13: there's there's been such a positive domino effect. You know,
- 23:14Speaker 13: you got the spring Hill development, we got the Jefferson
- 23:17Speaker 13: Park development, and then also kind of what you're seeing
- 23:19Speaker 13: now as you're seeing existing businesses reinvest I don't know
- 23:23Speaker 13: if you've seen that the Burger King buildings down right now,
- 23:26Speaker 13: they're actually gonna be building a new one.
- 23:27Speaker 5: Yeah. I saw that the other day. They're tearing down
- 23:29Speaker 5: the home of the Whopper, but they're bringing it back. Yeah,
- 23:31Speaker 5: you know, like it will be a double whopper when
- 23:32Speaker 5: it comes back.
- 23:33Speaker 2: I guess.
- 23:33Speaker 4: Sean Zonder is here from the city of South Charleston.
- 23:36Speaker 4: Just a lot of exciting stuff going on. Let's get
- 23:38Speaker 4: back to the parade. It's the sixty seventh annual Herbert J.
- 23:40Speaker 4: Thomas Memorial Armed Forces Day Parade, happening this Saturday at
- 23:43Speaker 4: noon D Street in South Charleston. And you can just,
- 23:47Speaker 4: like I guess, go on your Facebook page if you
- 23:48Speaker 4: need more information about that, or you know, contact the
- 23:50Speaker 4: folks with the with the Chamber, the CVB and I
- 23:52Speaker 4: should say, in City Hall or whatever. Lineup will start
- 23:55Speaker 4: around eleven o'clock and again it's very simple in the
- 23:59Speaker 4: line of the way, you got do it along the
- 24:01Speaker 4: railroad tracks and then it's a very it's a very
- 24:04Speaker 4: very short I don't wanna say it's sort because of
- 24:06Speaker 4: the number of people, but it's but it's very it's
- 24:08Speaker 4: a very quick parade. It doesn't take a long so
- 24:09Speaker 4: it's it's not going to take up your whole day
- 24:12Speaker 4: and things of that nature. All right, kind of text
- 24:17Speaker 4: here it says, I do I do wish South Charleston
- 24:21Speaker 4: did did hold this record, but sadly we do not.
- 24:24Speaker 4: For the long I said, believe to be my textors
- 24:27Speaker 4: do the research. So you know, Sean Chattanooga, Tennessee host
- 24:31Speaker 4: the longest continuously running parade, celebrated over seven decades of
- 24:35Speaker 4: patriotic march. It's second is Bremerton, Washington, which dates back
- 24:39Speaker 4: to nineteen forty eight. Now this though, I throw a
- 24:42Speaker 4: little asterisk in here, this is an Armed Forces Day parade,
- 24:46Speaker 4: right all right, So we don't know whether those other
- 24:47Speaker 4: cities have actually had an arm This is an Armed
- 24:49Speaker 4: Forces Day parade. Yes, so if nothing else, we will
- 24:53Speaker 4: drive to Chattanooga and Bremerton, and with the guns you've
- 24:56Speaker 4: got over there, I think we could probably just take
- 24:58Speaker 4: them out, all right, But I do appreciate all. We've
- 25:01Speaker 4: got a question for you, is Benards coming to South Charleston.
- 25:04Speaker 12: They have submitted their plans.
- 25:05Speaker 5: Yes, okay, here you go, John Zonegods amis pleasure you
- 25:08Speaker 5: having to show me. Thank you, thanks a lot, and
- 25:10Speaker 5: I'll see you this Saturday.

- 28:56Speaker 4: that I'll let you says, I don't want her to
- 28:57Speaker 4: punch me like she's gonna punch you, right, all right,
- 29:00Speaker 4: all right, So talk about this project that you've got
- 29:03Speaker 4: and I kind of teased it a little bit, but
- 29:04Speaker 4: to take it from the top, explain to people what
- 29:07Speaker 4: first of all, explain what it is that you guys
- 29:09Speaker 4: do and how it relates to this project that you
- 29:12Speaker 4: work with.
- 29:12Speaker 2: Okay, So in January fourteenth, we were at a meeting
- 29:17Speaker 2: and one of the local fireman guys was like, you
- 29:20Speaker 2: have to turn this into something special. So before then
- 29:24Speaker 2: I was just kind of traveling around. I say, ah,
- 29:26Speaker 2: but it's really we we're traveling around scanning old fire
- 29:29Speaker 2: photos an e MS photos and we're talking like photos
- 29:32Speaker 2: from the nineteen seventies, eighties, nineties, whatever, parades, just that
- 29:37Speaker 2: kind of stuff. And he kind of pulled me aside.
- 29:40Speaker 2: He was like, you don't know what you're doing.
- 29:41Speaker 5: And I'm like, so you're just going and just these
- 29:44Speaker 5: fire departments saying hey, can we scan your photos?
- 29:45Speaker 2: Basically, well, it wasn't even fire departments at the point.
- 29:48Speaker 2: It was just oh, just individuals. Individuals. They're like scrapbooks and.
- 29:52Speaker 5: What were you looking for in those photos?
- 29:54Speaker 2: Apparatusfy anything, And you know, he was like, you have
- 29:59Speaker 2: to start a business out of this or start a
- 30:00Speaker 2: different page. So we kind of always joked and called
- 30:04Speaker 2: it the Hackworth Fire Collection. Somebody give me a badge
- 30:06Speaker 2: or something, I be like, that's going to go in
- 30:08Speaker 2: the collection. So we made a Facebook January fourteenth, and
- 30:14Speaker 2: today is May fourteenth, and we are up to almost
- 30:19Speaker 2: seven thousand followers. We've traveled to thirty fire departments since
- 30:22Speaker 2: January fourteenth, all over the state of West Virginia. You
- 30:26Speaker 2: can go to any state around here and they have
- 30:29Speaker 2: a fireman's museum. West Virginia likes that, and by god,
- 30:33Speaker 2: we're going to change that. Okay, we have hopes of
- 30:36Speaker 2: traveling to all four hundred and thirty three fire departments
- 30:39Speaker 2: in the state of West Virginia, which, yes, that's a task.
- 30:43Speaker 2: But if there's a will, there's a way.
- 30:45Speaker 4: Why is it so important? And tomorrow you can weigh
- 30:47Speaker 4: in on this if you want to. Why do you
- 30:49Speaker 4: guys think that it's so important to tell this history?
- 30:53Speaker 2: Okay, she's not that, that's all right, go ahead. It's well,
- 30:57Speaker 2: it's just these people have sacrificed their whole life majority
- 31:01Speaker 2: to give back to others. And yes, West Virginia has
- 31:05Speaker 2: a fallen firefightres memorial, and that's the ultimate sacrifice. But
- 31:10Speaker 2: what about the little man who even only spent two
- 31:12Speaker 2: years on a fire department, maybe just ran two fires
- 31:15Speaker 2: or two recks, but to a civilian that was their
- 31:18Speaker 2: worst day, you know. I mean like they need to
- 31:21Speaker 2: get that credit and their stories deserve to be told.
- 31:25Speaker 2: And it's more than just scanning photos. We also conduct
- 31:28Speaker 2: interviews kind of like what we're doing here, but we
- 31:30Speaker 2: actually do video with it, and just.
- 31:35Speaker 7: We're also preserving the current history. We take pictures of.
- 31:38Speaker 5: The shoot in form me a little bit there if
- 31:39Speaker 5: you would go ahead.
- 31:40Speaker 7: We take pictures of the newer apparatus in the departments
- 31:44Speaker 7: so we.
- 31:44Speaker 5: Can buy our apparatus.
- 31:45Speaker 4: We're talking about just you know, equipment and things like that. Yeah, okay,
- 31:48Speaker 4: you want to make sure people need to go ahead.
- 31:49Speaker 7: Yes, the fire trucks all of their different equipment. We
- 31:53Speaker 7: usually try to pick like a staple place in the
- 31:56Speaker 7: town that we're at, like Richwood. We did it in
- 31:58Speaker 7: there in the sawmill by the fire our department, which
- 32:01Speaker 7: was very cool.
- 32:03Speaker 2: Bethany we did it with Bethany College with it in
- 32:05Speaker 2: the background. So it's it's more than just pulling them
- 32:08Speaker 2: pulling these fire trucks out in front of the fire station,
- 32:10Speaker 2: staffing photos because we want to try to say with
- 32:14Speaker 2: everything in West Virginia, it all relates back to the jobs.
- 32:20Speaker 2: So in the Northern Panhandle. You have steel, so we
- 32:24Speaker 2: want to, you know, use the steel yards. You know,
- 32:26Speaker 2: how did that kind of influence the fire fighting here
- 32:30Speaker 2: or the ems with rich Wood, you have the saw mills.
- 32:33Speaker 2: It's called rich Wood for a reason. And we're like,
- 32:36Speaker 2: let's incorporate the community into this.
- 32:39Speaker 5: Let the community tell its story. Is part of what you.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Guys are doing exactly exactly, and this is I kind
- 32:45Speaker 2: of get an emotional about this, but we always say
- 32:49Speaker 2: that we want a brick and mortar. But you know,
- 32:52Speaker 2: we're not millionaires. We're both full time EMTs, a kind
- 32:55Speaker 2: all kind of antlans. We do this as a We
- 32:58Speaker 2: do have a business license. We make very We lose
- 33:01Speaker 2: money hand over fist by doing this, but it's we
- 33:05Speaker 2: want to preserve and make sure that this stuff's there
- 33:08Speaker 2: for the future. And it's just it's we enjoy ourselves
- 33:12Speaker 2: doing it.
- 33:12Speaker 7: There's a lot of family members that see our posts
- 33:16Speaker 7: that we put out of the pictures and things that
- 33:19Speaker 7: have never seen their family doing things that they loved.
- 33:23Speaker 2: We were actually contacted when we did Barbersville. A gentleman
- 33:28Speaker 2: commented on one of the photos and said, I'm perfectly
- 33:31Speaker 2: fine with the water mark, but could you move it?
- 33:33Speaker 2: He was like, that is the only picture I have
- 33:35Speaker 2: of me and my father's him as a fireman. So
- 33:39Speaker 2: I seen him the picture just without the watermark completely,
- 33:41Speaker 2: because that's that's the right thing to do. Sure. Yeah,
- 33:44Speaker 2: And a few days later he texts me He's like whoa,
- 33:47Speaker 2: and I'm like, what are we? Whoaeing?
- 33:50Speaker 6: Well?
- 33:50Speaker 12: Good? Whoa good?
- 33:52Speaker 2: Woa good. So his father actually had to bail out
- 33:55Speaker 2: of a window of a two story house. It flashed,
- 33:59Speaker 2: which means every thing So imagine this room is on
- 34:02Speaker 2: fire and flashes when everything in this room reaches its
- 34:06Speaker 2: temperature points, so it combusts. So it was about to combust,
- 34:11Speaker 2: and he jumped out of a window. Well, the whole
- 34:13Speaker 2: family story was this happened. Well, his children was like, yeah, right, Dad,
- 34:19Speaker 2: you know that never happened or whatever. It's like, No,
- 34:21Speaker 2: I was on the cover of the Huntington Herald, And
- 34:26Speaker 2: so as they got older, they kept hearing it and
- 34:29Speaker 2: contacted Grandma. You know, do you have a copy of
- 34:31Speaker 2: when dad was on the front page of the paper?
- 34:34Speaker 2: No contact to Huntington, Harold, it's not out there. So
- 34:39Speaker 2: we had actually found that picture and posted it of
- 34:42Speaker 2: his dad bailing out of that window, and he was like,
- 34:45Speaker 2: this means more to me than the world. But talking
- 34:47Speaker 2: about the million dollar thing, because I kind of went
- 34:49Speaker 2: off on a tangent.
- 34:50Speaker 5: Oh that you had me like, I'll take this thing
- 34:53Speaker 5: into talk line.
- 34:54Speaker 2: Man.
- 34:55Speaker 5: Yeah, weh god, it's ten twenty, but go ahead.
- 34:58Speaker 2: So you know, we have what all fifteen reviews on Facebook,
- 35:04Speaker 2: We have a good word, i'd like to think, but
- 35:07Speaker 2: all of it means more when you get a message
- 35:10Speaker 2: like that saying this is the first time I've seen
- 35:11Speaker 2: my father and Bunker Gear driving a truck in a parade.
- 35:14Speaker 2: This is the only picture we know of. Somebody could
- 35:17Speaker 2: walk in here right now and offer us a million
- 35:19Speaker 2: dollars and it still wouldn't be the same effect as
- 35:21Speaker 2: someone saying, hey, that's the only picture I have of
- 35:24Speaker 2: my father, grandfather, grandmother mother doing their passion.
- 35:30Speaker 12: Right.
- 35:30Speaker 5: Wow, this this is good stuff. I mean, it really
- 35:33Speaker 5: really is.
- 35:33Speaker 4: Because again, these stories, you know, kind of get exaggerated
- 35:38Speaker 4: over the years and whatever, and you know, and they
- 35:41Speaker 4: you know, you know how it is your doodle hackworth Son,
- 35:43Speaker 4: you know you know what BS is.
- 35:47Speaker 5: I'm kiddy, I'm kiddy, I'm kiddy. Doodles A good friend
- 35:50Speaker 5: of mine.
- 35:50Speaker 4: He's with the Aim of Steel band, which up by
- 35:52Speaker 4: the way playing at the Putnam Moose Club Saturday night.
- 35:55Speaker 5: Whant to make sure I get that in there, all right, So.
- 35:58Speaker 2: I do want to interrupt you about some really quick
- 36:00Speaker 2: Amos Steel is also playing the Glasgow seventy fifth Anniversary,
- 36:04Speaker 2: which is June thirteenth, so that's a big deal for it,
- 36:06Speaker 2: kind of you know, we're in bed with both of
- 36:08Speaker 2: them with the fire Department because we're both on Glasgow
- 36:10Speaker 2: and Dad will be playing there. So all right, everybody
- 36:13Speaker 2: come out to that.
- 36:13Speaker 5: Wow, they're on tour now, aren't they.
- 36:15Speaker 4: I guess we just have to get Tony the Taylor
- 36:17Speaker 4: to make them a shirt that with two dates on it.
- 36:21Speaker 4: But no, no, they did rip past last week to
- 36:24Speaker 4: I give my guys a hard time because they're great guys,
- 36:26Speaker 4: and your dad's a wonderful human being, or don't. I
- 36:28Speaker 4: hope he's not listening. I don't want to have to
- 36:30Speaker 4: put up with that. But anyway, I kind of got
- 36:33Speaker 4: off on a tangent. Now this stuff is when you
- 36:36Speaker 4: said that story about how they didn't have any and
- 36:40Speaker 4: they ask you to remove the watermark, which again watermark
- 36:42Speaker 4: is a little thing in the corner. People don't know that,
- 36:44Speaker 4: says who owns this picture? Basically, and where did you find?
- 36:48Speaker 4: Tell me again where you got that?
- 36:49Speaker 2: We found that picture in about how many about fifteen
- 36:54Speaker 2: eighteen albumsparks in Barbersville Fire Department that they all laid out.
- 36:58Speaker 2: So we're kind of go down that tangent. So we
- 37:02Speaker 2: don't charge for any of our services. This is completely free.
- 37:05Speaker 2: I was joking with the gentleman out in the green room.
- 37:08Speaker 2: We're losing money hand over fist when it comes to this.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Like I said, we're EMTs, but we love doing it,
- 37:13Speaker 2: so at that point it's no money. But so what
- 37:15Speaker 2: we do is we travel the state, you know, we
- 37:17Speaker 2: set updates with fire departments and say hey, we'll be
- 37:21Speaker 2: there eleven. We'll do an interview with it. Don't have to.
- 37:24Speaker 2: It could be a member that's only been on the
- 37:25Speaker 2: fire department a month, or it could be this very
- 37:28Speaker 2: first chief you have, very first chief, or this man
- 37:31Speaker 2: was in the Bucket brigade in eighteen ninety two. It
- 37:34Speaker 2: doesn't matter to us.
- 37:35Speaker 4: Actually, I got a text here from Joe Stevens on
- 37:37Speaker 4: we know Joe or not he's with a nitro Well
- 37:38Speaker 4: Joe does a lot of things. He's with the Nitro CVB,
- 37:41Speaker 4: the Mayor's office and the fire department, so on and
- 37:43Speaker 4: so forth. He said to and I'll make sure that
- 37:46Speaker 4: you get this to give him to give you guess
- 37:48Speaker 4: his number for the Nitro Fire Department. Okay, And he
- 37:50Speaker 4: has picks from nineteen seventeen when Nitro was formed.
- 37:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and so far.
- 37:55Speaker 5: And Joe was actually there in nineteen seventeen. So there's that.
- 37:58Speaker 2: So far. The oldest pictures we've skied and is pre
- 38:01Speaker 2: Civil War, wasn't.
- 38:02Speaker 7: It nineteen oh one?
- 38:05Speaker 12: Wet?
- 38:06Speaker 2: But still, I mean still, but these photos there's people
- 38:11Speaker 2: who are in Florida. I mean, for some odd reason,
- 38:14Speaker 2: that's what Virginia's retirement home with Florida. Everybody knows that,
- 38:17Speaker 2: so we get I thought, that's Walmart. There's people from
- 38:21Speaker 2: all over the country. That's messages saying, hey, you know
- 38:25Speaker 2: what you're doing is great. I was affiliated with this
- 38:27Speaker 2: fire department for five years. We were in FDIC, which
- 38:31Speaker 2: is the Fire Department Instructors Conference, which is like the
- 38:34Speaker 2: Coachella of the fire service. That's the best way to
- 38:38Speaker 2: it is it is And.
- 38:40Speaker 4: That made me be the most bizarre reference I've ever heard,
- 38:43Speaker 4: but go ahead delling.
- 38:44Speaker 2: It's the hack worst me what I say. So, we
- 38:47Speaker 2: were just walking down the halls and random people would
- 38:49Speaker 2: walk up and say, hey, I just want you to
- 38:51Speaker 2: know that you pasted a picture of me from Somersville
- 38:54Speaker 2: when I was there as a junior. And I'm like,
- 38:57Speaker 2: that's awesome. He was like, I didn't know these pictures existed.
- 39:00Speaker 2: So it's it's the outreach. We were over here at
- 39:03Speaker 2: the V one hundred yards cell.
- 39:04Speaker 7: Somebody walked up to us and was like, hey, we
- 39:06Speaker 7: love your stuff. When are you coming to us?
- 39:08Speaker 2: I think it was Pok Poka, So it's we love it.
- 39:13Speaker 5: How do people reach out to you? That's what I
- 39:15Speaker 5: want to make sure. So what's the best way to
- 39:17Speaker 5: do it?
- 39:17Speaker 4: Because there's people listening right now, they're going, well, I've
- 39:19Speaker 4: got some stuff and yeah, and again they don't they
- 39:21Speaker 4: just scan your photos that they're not taking them forever exactly.
- 39:24Speaker 2: And that's one thing we want to like beat into people.
- 39:26Speaker 2: I don't want your negatives. I don't want that responsibility
- 39:28Speaker 2: of taking those home. That is like our number one
- 39:30Speaker 2: golden rule is we don't take photos home because that
- 39:33Speaker 2: is the biggest thing. Photos grow legs and walk off.
- 39:36Speaker 7: We don't like to remove them from where they need
- 39:39Speaker 7: to be. They need to stay in their home.
- 39:41Speaker 2: But to contact us private messages on Facebook And what
- 39:47Speaker 2: is the Facebook Hackworth Fire Collection LLC. It's a picture
- 39:50Speaker 2: of our logo, which is a multice cross with HFC
- 39:53Speaker 2: across it. It's it's not hard to miss. It's got
- 39:57Speaker 2: the thin red line. That's the West Virginia.
- 40:00Speaker 6: Uh.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Email Highworthfire Collection at gmail dot com and all of
- 40:04Speaker 2: our informations on Facebook. We're pretty easy to reach.
- 40:07Speaker 4: Okay, are there any community because with it be in
- 40:10Speaker 4: West Virginia and even though this show is based in Charleston,
- 40:13Speaker 4: you know, via the magic of al Gore's Internet and
- 40:17Speaker 4: this show, I mean, people are listening to us all
- 40:18Speaker 4: over literally all over the country. Yes, at least three
- 40:21Speaker 4: or four uh, you know, all over the country right now.
- 40:24Speaker 4: Is there any areas of the state that maybe you
- 40:26Speaker 4: haven't heard from?
- 40:26Speaker 5: I'm talking about you. I'm like eastern Panhandled northern that
- 40:29Speaker 5: that you'd like to get.
- 40:30Speaker 2: Actually, we've heard from both.
- 40:32Speaker 5: Okay, so we more.
- 40:34Speaker 7: Central states that we are, central counties that we haven't from.
- 40:37Speaker 2: There's fire departments in Kanall County that I haven't heard from.
- 40:40Speaker 5: All right, well this is Kanaw County, so so tell
- 40:42Speaker 5: me who you're looking for.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Uh, let's see, let's get down the line. Cisonville, we
- 40:46Speaker 2: touched on some of their chief stuff. We haven't invited there.
- 40:50Speaker 2: We've been now been invited to Nitro. We hadn't heard
- 40:52Speaker 2: from them.
- 40:53Speaker 7: Uh.
- 40:53Speaker 2: South Charleston, we haven't. We gave them some business cards.
- 40:57Speaker 5: I'm gonna say, do you know we just had the
- 40:58Speaker 5: spokesperson for the city of South Charles.
- 41:00Speaker 2: I did not. I should have stoped him in the hallway.
- 41:03Speaker 5: Sean, if you're listening, you know, get in touch with
- 41:05Speaker 5: this guy. Go ahead some more.
- 41:07Speaker 2: Charleston, we're actually going. Charleston was one of the first
- 41:10Speaker 2: paid fire departments to reach out, which it was Isaac Bernetti.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Shout out, Isaac, if you're listening to it, it's your birthday,
- 41:16Speaker 2: Happy birthday. But their Union Hall reached out, which you know,
- 41:21Speaker 2: I aff and they wanted us to come and scan
- 41:24Speaker 2: all their history and some of their stuff is all
- 41:26Speaker 2: the way before eighteen hundreds. But what's interesting is you'll
- 41:30Speaker 2: have eager, younger people in the fire department. He'll reach
- 41:33Speaker 2: out and say, hey, come to Yadayata Volunteer Fire Department.
- 41:37Speaker 12: I'm like, okay.
- 41:38Speaker 2: I was like, let's set up a date, and it's crickets.
- 41:40Speaker 7: I gotta talk to a bunch of tea.
- 41:42Speaker 2: If I got to talk to a lot of people,
- 41:43Speaker 2: get a little gung ho and message and say hey,
- 41:46Speaker 2: we want to come, and then you kind of fizzle out.
- 41:48Speaker 2: But getting back to the whole road to four thirty three,
- 41:51Speaker 2: it's it's not impossible. We've We've decided to name it
- 41:55Speaker 2: Bethany Weekend. So Bethany invited us up, and Bethany's good
- 42:00Speaker 2: little hall. From here, it is you can't get there
- 42:02Speaker 2: from here, as my father would say, and I told him.
- 42:05Speaker 2: I was like, look, I was like, I have no
- 42:07Speaker 2: problem coming. But I was like, let's make it worth
- 42:09Speaker 2: aur while. I was like, invite text or representative from
- 42:14Speaker 2: every fire department in Brook County and say hey, these
- 42:17Speaker 2: guys are coming up. You know, let's set up time
- 42:20Speaker 2: frames and we busted out how many fire departments in
- 42:23Speaker 2: that I say busted out. I don't like that term
- 42:25Speaker 2: because you still feel like you could spend a wee
- 42:28Speaker 2: mixt hours at a fire department and still not feel
- 42:30Speaker 2: like you gained anything.
- 42:32Speaker 7: We met with probably six or seven while we were there,
- 42:35Speaker 7: but on our way up all the way from Parkersburg
- 42:40Speaker 7: all the way into brook County on Route two. We
- 42:42Speaker 7: stayed on route too, and we stopped at eighteen fire
- 42:46Speaker 7: departments along the way, just stopping mind saying, hey, this
- 42:49Speaker 7: is who we are, just trying to get our name
- 42:50Speaker 7: out there.
- 42:51Speaker 2: And what was funny was towards the end of it,
- 42:53Speaker 2: the word had gotten out.
- 42:54Speaker 7: People were watching because every every department we would stop at,
- 42:58Speaker 7: we'd post a video. Hey we're here, we didn't see anybody.
- 43:01Speaker 7: We left you guys a little something. And then, like
- 43:04Speaker 7: he said, the closer we got more people would realize
- 43:07Speaker 7: we were on our way and they would be there
- 43:09Speaker 7: waiting on Yes.
- 43:09Speaker 2: At one point we got to Benwood, which is just
- 43:12Speaker 2: barely south of Wheeling, and they had nine members just
- 43:16Speaker 2: sitting there waiting for us to come in. I felt
- 43:19Speaker 2: like there was gonna be like a marching band by
- 43:21Speaker 2: the time we got to Brooklyn County waiting for us
- 43:23Speaker 2: to play. But it's just there's a lot of fire
- 43:26Speaker 2: departments in wes Virginia's like there's four thirty three and
- 43:29Speaker 2: the problem is that's a dwindling number. Yeah, and one thing.
- 43:35Speaker 2: We have a bunch of Smithers Fire Department stuff, a
- 43:37Speaker 2: bunch of Smithers Fire Department stuff, and they were the
- 43:40Speaker 2: last fire department in West Virginia shut down and where's
- 43:44Speaker 2: their history going. Luckily we're here to preserve it. I
- 43:49Speaker 2: have there one of if there's a few names you
- 43:52Speaker 2: can drop in West Virginia with the fire service, and
- 43:55Speaker 2: you're pretty much like that's cream of the crop. You
- 43:58Speaker 2: got Matt Jackson, who was a Charleston fireman, phenomenal man.
- 44:02Speaker 7: Everybody knows him, Matt Jackson.
- 44:06Speaker 2: And there's a cool thing in our collection that a
- 44:08Speaker 2: lot of people didn't know about. And I was able
- 44:10Speaker 2: to share the story there was I cannot think off
- 44:13Speaker 2: the top of my head. I read the article yesterday
- 44:14Speaker 2: for it. There was a whiskey decanner made of a
- 44:18Speaker 2: fireman in three quarter boots which are the pull up
- 44:21Speaker 2: boots and you don't know, in long coats like they've
- 44:22Speaker 2: worn in the seventies, wearing a red helmet and you
- 44:26Speaker 2: see it in collections and stuff. Well, fun fact that
- 44:30Speaker 2: is actually sculpted after Matt Jackson. Oh really, he was
- 44:34Speaker 2: an African American captain for Charleston Fire like I said,
- 44:37Speaker 2: phenomenal man, And we were actually able to share the
- 44:40Speaker 2: story for a lot of people saying, hey, this is Matt.
- 44:44Speaker 2: And I kind of shot myself in the foot because
- 44:46Speaker 2: I didn't own one. There was about what ten of
- 44:49Speaker 2: them on eBay.
- 44:50Speaker 7: I kept telling him. I was like, here, I get
- 44:52Speaker 7: you one. I can get you one. He's like, no,
- 44:54Speaker 7: not yet, not yet.
- 44:55Speaker 2: The next day after my post, they were gone, and
- 44:58Speaker 2: everybody like a week later like look what I got
- 45:01Speaker 2: in the mail. Look what I got in the mail.
- 45:02Speaker 2: So it's like we're really shining a spotlight on things
- 45:06Speaker 2: that should have been shined on a long time ago.
- 45:08Speaker 5: All Right, we got to wrap it up.
- 45:10Speaker 4: I could, but I need to, uh to make sure
- 45:12Speaker 4: we get the information out there for the people. So
- 45:14Speaker 4: if you've got connections, maybe your grandfather, I mean you
- 45:16Speaker 4: may live in Charleston, but your grandfather was involved in
- 45:19Speaker 4: the fire department in Williamson. You know, whatever these people
- 45:23Speaker 4: want to hear from you, they're not going to destroy
- 45:24Speaker 4: your stuff if they're not going to go make money
- 45:26Speaker 4: on it or anything like that. All they want to
- 45:28Speaker 4: do is to preserve this history.
- 45:30Speaker 2: I don't even care if it's just a picture of
- 45:31Speaker 2: your grandpa with the story he his legacy in the
- 45:34Speaker 2: fire service. At one point he helped one person in
- 45:37Speaker 2: the state of West Virginia, and that is what we're
- 45:38Speaker 2: all about.
- 45:39Speaker 5: All right, give him your information where people can reach
- 45:41Speaker 5: out to you.
- 45:41Speaker 2: So reach out to us at Hackworth Fire Collection LLC.
