- 0:08Hello there, and welcome to another mental health moment
- 0:11from the Life Live Better podcast.
- 0:13This is the place where we take just a couple of moments to care
- 0:16for our minds. I'm Paula, and today we're
- 0:18talking about something that nearly every one of us
- 0:21experiences at some point, and that's procrastination.
- 0:26Most people think procrastination is just about
- 0:28being lazy or not having enough discipline, but in many cases,
- 0:34procrastination is actually connected to how we manage
- 0:37difficult emotions. That shocked me.
- 0:41Sometimes we delay tasks because they feel overwhelming.
- 0:45Sometimes we'll delay because we're afraid that we won't do
- 0:48something perfectly. And sometimes we'll delay
- 0:51because tasks bring up anxiety or self doubt and even boredom.
- 0:56So in those moments putting off a task, it can feel like
- 0:59temporary relief. But the problem is that
- 1:02procrastination rarely makes the task go away.
- 1:06It usually just adds more stress later.
- 1:09Boy, don't I know this one. So think about the feeling when
- 1:13a deadline is approaching and something isn't done yet.
- 1:17The stress can quickly turn into pressure or guilt or frustration
- 1:21with ourselves. So if procrastination is tied to
- 1:25emotions, then the solution isn't just to try harder.
- 1:30Instead, it helps if we can change how we approach the task.
- 1:36One helpful strategy is to make a task smaller.
- 1:39I do this one, and it helps. So instead of telling yourself
- 1:43that you have to complete the entire project, just focus on a
- 1:46first small step. Maybe just opening the document.
- 1:50I mean, maybe writing a few sentences or spending 10 minutes
- 1:54getting prepared and started. Another helpful approach is to
- 1:59lower the expectation of perfection.
- 2:02I mean, if we procrastinate because we're feeling like what
- 2:06we produce has to be perfect, give yourself permission to do
- 2:10something imperfectly. That will often make it much
- 2:14easier to get started. And sometimes it helps to remind
- 2:19yourself that action creates motivation, not the other way
- 2:22around. We often wait to feel motivated
- 2:25before starting something, but do you know that motivation
- 2:28frequently shows up after we begin?
- 2:31So if you find yourself procrastinating, try to pause
- 2:34and ask, what am I feeling about this task?
- 2:38You might discover that the barrier isn't your ability, it's
- 2:41actually the emotion. So taking one small step forward
- 2:46can be enough to break the cycle.
- 2:49The Life Live Better podcast thanks you for joining us for
- 2:51this mental health moment. Until next time, take care of
- 2:55your mind because it's the only one you've got.
- 2:58And don't forget that knowledge leads to a life lived better.
