- 0:03Speaker 1: I get everybody. I'm Dan Horde, and thanks for downloading
- 0:06Speaker 1: The Bengals Booth Podcast. The Wherever you go, whatever you do,
- 0:13Speaker 1: I will be right here waiting for you. Addition, yes,
- 0:20Speaker 1: the weight is over is Dave Lapham joins me for
- 0:22Speaker 1: what is typically the most downloaded episode of this podcast
- 0:26Speaker 1: each year, as we discuss what we would do and
- 0:29Speaker 1: then predict what the Bengals will do in our final
- 0:32Speaker 1: episode before the draft, and before we get to that,
- 0:36Speaker 1: it's what you would do as I share the results
- 0:39Speaker 1: of my highly unofficial Bengals fans consensus mock draft. The
- 0:44Speaker 1: Bengals Booth Podcast is presented by bud Light Seltzer. Refresh
- 0:48Speaker 1: the game, and here's a quick reminder that you can
- 0:51Speaker 1: have the latest edition of this podcast delivered right to
- 0:54Speaker 1: your phone, tablet, or computer by subscribing on iTunes, Stitcher,
- 0:58Speaker 1: Google Play, Spotify, or pod Bean. It's the greatest thing
- 1:02Speaker 1: since Dave Lapham's In the Trenches podcast. My broadcast partner
- 1:08Speaker 1: is so modest that I didn't even know until last
- 1:10Speaker 1: week that he started doing his own podcast in January.
- 1:13Speaker 1: And it's awesome. It's an interview format and laps guest
- 1:17Speaker 1: list is impressive. Including Bengals legends like Boomerissiasin, Chris Collinsworth,
- 1:22Speaker 1: Isaac Curtis, and Andrew Whitworth. I learned all sorts of
- 1:26Speaker 1: good nuggets in his conversation with Big Wit, including the
- 1:29Speaker 1: fact that after having knee surgery in Los Angeles, Joe
- 1:32Speaker 1: Burrow watched NFL games on some Sunday afternoons on the
- 1:37Speaker 1: couch at Whitworth's house. I binged through six episodes last
- 1:41Speaker 1: week and they were all great. So check out the
- 1:44Speaker 1: In the Trenches podcast with Dave Lappham. Now let's get
- 1:50Speaker 1: to the draft. I conducted an interesting project on Twitter
- 1:54Speaker 1: last week in an attempt to produce the consensus mock
- 1:57Speaker 1: draft of Bengals fans. I asked my Twitter followers to
- 2:01Speaker 1: go to any mock draft simulator and make Cincinnati's picks
- 2:05Speaker 1: in the first four rounds with no trades allowed. That
- 2:08Speaker 1: would have made things too complicated. Then I asked them
- 2:12Speaker 1: to take a screenshot and send me the results. Three
- 2:15Speaker 1: hundred fifty five people responded in the first twenty four hours.
- 2:19Speaker 1: That's a pretty good sample size. And here are the
- 2:22Speaker 1: unscientific results. With a fifth pick of the two twenty
- 2:30Speaker 1: one NFL Draft Cincinnati Bengals fans select Jamar Chase wide
- 2:36Speaker 1: receiver Lsu. Based on the Twitter verse, Bengals fans are
- 2:40Speaker 1: overwhelmingly team Chase. Jamar received two hundred thirty six out
- 2:45Speaker 1: of three hundred fifty five first round votes. That's a
- 2:48Speaker 1: two thirds supermajority. Pine Sewell received ninety four votes, that's
- 2:53Speaker 1: twenty six percent. Kyle Pitts received twenty one of paltry
- 2:57Speaker 1: six percent. One you see fan opted for Bearcat's offensive
- 3:01Speaker 1: lineman James Hudson. I'm pretty sure he was joking. With
- 3:08Speaker 1: the thirty eighth pick of the twenty twenty one NFL draft,
- 3:12Speaker 1: Cincinnati Bengals fans select Alex Leatherwood, offensive lineman Alabama. Since
- 3:18Speaker 1: more than seventy percent of you selected a receiving target
- 3:21Speaker 1: in round one either Chase er Pits, it makes sense
- 3:25Speaker 1: that the top five vote getters in the second round
- 3:27Speaker 1: were all offensive linemen, led by Leatherwood, who played left
- 3:31Speaker 1: tackle the last two years at Alabama but might be
- 3:34Speaker 1: better suited to play guard in the NFL. The Bengals
- 3:38Speaker 1: second round pick is thirty eighth overall. Leatherwood checks in
- 3:41Speaker 1: at number thirty four on Dane Brugler's Big Board and
- 3:45Speaker 1: number forty according to Pro Football Focus. He did not
- 3:48Speaker 1: make Daniel Jeremiah's Top fifty. Bengals fans that selected Pinay
- 3:53Speaker 1: Sewel in round one typically went for a wide receiver
- 3:56Speaker 1: in round two, and the leading vote getter was Elijah
- 3:59Speaker 1: Moore of All Ole, miss, who received one more vote
- 4:02Speaker 1: than Terris Marshall of LSU. Elijah Morris thirty fifth on
- 4:06Speaker 1: the Dane Brugler Board, twenty second according to Pro Football
- 4:10Speaker 1: Focus and thirty eighth on Daniel Jeremiah's Top fifty. Judging
- 4:14Speaker 1: by that more would be a good pick at number
- 4:17Speaker 1: thirty eight, Terris Marshall is twenty eighth according to PF,
- 4:21Speaker 1: thirty seventh on Daniel Jeremiah's list, and forty eighth on
- 4:24Speaker 1: the Brugler Big Board. With the sixty ninth pick of
- 4:31Speaker 1: the twenty twenty one NFL Draft, Cincinnati Bengals fans select
- 4:37Speaker 1: Milton Williams, defensive tackle Louisiana Tech. Williams is a little
- 4:41Speaker 1: undersized for a tackle at two hundred eighty four pounds,
- 4:44Speaker 1: but he is a great athlete who ran a four
- 4:46Speaker 1: six forty at that size. He is seventieth on the
- 4:50Speaker 1: Bruglar Board and number seventy three according to PF, so
- 4:53Speaker 1: that's just about right for the Bengals third round pick,
- 4:56Speaker 1: number sixty nine overall. With the one hundred eleventh pick
- 5:03Speaker 1: of the twenty twenty one NFL Draft, Cincinnati Bengals Fans
- 5:07Speaker 1: select Kendrick Green, offensive guard Illinois. Green was a three
- 5:13Speaker 1: year starter for the Fighting Alni and a second team
- 5:15Speaker 1: All American this year. He's sixty eighth on the PF
- 5:19Speaker 1: Board and eighty fourth according to Dane Brugler, so that
- 5:22Speaker 1: would appear to be an excellent fourth round selection if
- 5:25Speaker 1: available at number one eleven overall. It's notable to me
- 5:30Speaker 1: that the Bengals Fans four round mock draft does not
- 5:33Speaker 1: include a pass rusher. I would be surprised if that's
- 5:36Speaker 1: the way it plays out. In fact, I wouldn't rule
- 5:38Speaker 1: out a pass rusher in the second round. If somebody
- 5:41Speaker 1: slides that they have a first round grade on, and
- 5:44Speaker 1: Dane Brugler has five edge rushers in his top thirty two,
- 5:48Speaker 1: I have a hard time imagining they won't take one
- 5:51Speaker 1: in the first four rounds. But based on three hundred
- 5:54Speaker 1: and fifty five of you, the Bengals Fans consensus mock
- 5:58Speaker 1: draft in the first four rounds go Jamar Chase, Alex Leatherwood,
- 6:02Speaker 1: Milton Williams, and Kendrick Greene. The Bengals Booth Podcast is
- 6:07Speaker 1: presented by Bud Light Seltzer. It's light and refreshing with
- 6:11Speaker 1: a hint of fruit flavor. Now, without further ado, it's
- 6:15Speaker 1: time for my final pre draft podcast with Dave Lapham
- 6:19Speaker 1: Lat Bengals fans are split into three camps, alphabetically Team Chase,
- 6:24Speaker 1: Team Pits, Team Sewel. But I want to start with
- 6:28Speaker 1: a fourth possibility. Could trading down still be possible? Or
- 6:33Speaker 1: low and behold, could they actually draft somebody else? I
- 6:37Speaker 1: think trading down is a possibility, but I think it's
- 6:42Speaker 1: getting more and more remote because I think they are
- 6:45Speaker 1: down to a big three of choices, and if they're
- 6:49Speaker 1: going to trade back, I don't think they want to
- 6:51Speaker 1: trade back much further than eight to make sure they
- 6:54Speaker 1: don't lose any one of those three. You know, you
- 6:56Speaker 1: don't want to trade back and give up on a
- 6:59Speaker 1: guy who could have such a huge impact on the
- 7:01Speaker 1: football team. But you know, the thought of three of
- 7:06Speaker 1: the top forty plus players in the draft for the
- 7:09Speaker 1: top sixty plus players in the draft you know has
- 7:11Speaker 1: some appeal. But again, you've you've gotten to the fifth
- 7:17Speaker 1: pick in the draft, in the first pick the year
- 7:19Speaker 1: before for a reason, and it's a tough, tough reason reasons.
- 7:23Speaker 1: You don't want to go through that anymore. So if
- 7:26Speaker 1: there's if there's a guy that you feel comfortable with,
- 7:29Speaker 1: and I think there's probably more than one guy they
- 7:30Speaker 1: feel comfortable with, there could be a difference maker with
- 7:33Speaker 1: that fifth pick in the draft. You stay in pick,
- 7:36Speaker 1: and I think that guy should be a candidate for
- 7:40Speaker 1: Rookie of the Year, should be a candidate for the
- 7:43Speaker 1: Pro Bowl, should be a candidate for those type of things.
- 7:45Speaker 1: He shouldn't be just a starter, you know, necessarily first
- 7:49Speaker 1: and foremost. He better be a contributor starter as such.
- 7:52Speaker 1: But you know, I think you're hoping that, like Joe
- 7:56Speaker 1: Burrow was first pick of the draft, Rookie of the
- 7:58Speaker 1: Year candidate until the end, and that's what you're looking
- 8:02Speaker 1: for with the fifth pick of the draft as well.
- 8:04Speaker 1: All Right, we are going to get to your prediction.
- 8:07Speaker 1: People always want to know who you predict the Bengals
- 8:09Speaker 1: are going to go. We'll do that at the end
- 8:10Speaker 1: of this conversation. But I want to get to our preference.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Who would you like to see them pick number five? Overall?
- 8:19Speaker 1: I guess I guess as a former lineman, I'd like
- 8:23Speaker 1: to see them pick Seul because all I'd have to
- 8:26Speaker 1: do as a teammate of Joe Burrow is look at
- 8:29Speaker 1: his scar and say, cool, that's ugly. How did that happen? Well,
- 8:35Speaker 1: it happened because he didn't get a good protection up front.
- 8:38Speaker 1: And it wasn't just off the edge, it was in
- 8:40Speaker 1: the middle of the offensive line. The offensive line just
- 8:43Speaker 1: has to get better, period. And I think that this
- 8:45Speaker 1: draft is very deep in offensive lineman, which could say,
- 8:50Speaker 1: you know, you could say, well, you don't necessarily have
- 8:53Speaker 1: to take Seul. There are guys that could help the
- 8:56Speaker 1: Bengals and maybe all the way to the third round,
- 8:58Speaker 1: and I agree with that, But that receiver, I mean,
- 9:02Speaker 1: there's there's other receivers besides Chase that could help the Bengals.
- 9:07Speaker 1: The key is how much of a dropoff is there
- 9:10Speaker 1: from Seoul to Slater to whoever else as opposed to
- 9:13Speaker 1: Chase to the number two receiver whoever else. How big
- 9:16Speaker 1: of a dropoff is there? Because you're not just worried
- 9:18Speaker 1: about the fifth pick, you're about worried about the entire draft.
- 9:22Speaker 1: So where's the where's the depth by position? When is
- 9:27Speaker 1: the run going to be made on that depth in
- 9:29Speaker 1: that position? So as you're as you're contemplating not just
- 9:32Speaker 1: the fifth pick, but the first pick in that second round,
- 9:35Speaker 1: which is another high draft pick, what will be there?
- 9:39Speaker 1: Do you think there'll be more offensive lineman to choose
- 9:41Speaker 1: from the receivers of a high caliber or the other
- 9:45Speaker 1: way around. That might influence what I do with that
- 9:48Speaker 1: first pick of the draft potentially, But bottom line, Dan is,
- 9:52Speaker 1: in my opinion, there's more of a shortage of offensive
- 9:56Speaker 1: lineman in the NFL than wide receivers. On a team
- 9:58Speaker 1: by team basis and simple math, you have five guys
- 10:03Speaker 1: of the eleven, it's almost so you have to come
- 10:06Speaker 1: up with five solid guys and hopefully a star in
- 10:09Speaker 1: there somewhere to protect your quarterback, and then next would
- 10:12Speaker 1: be receiver. You know, go three wise, so that's three
- 10:15Speaker 1: elevenths of it. You know you're getting over a quarter
- 10:18Speaker 1: But the offensive lineman, there's everybody that plays basketball in
- 10:24Speaker 1: high school for example, it's not going to get a
- 10:26Speaker 1: college basketball scholarship. They play football and play wide receiver.
- 10:29Speaker 1: I mean, there's so many more bodies playing wide receiver
- 10:32Speaker 1: at every level of football than there are as you know,
- 10:35Speaker 1: solid offensive lineman playing at every level of football. Because
- 10:38Speaker 1: number one, it's not a glamorous position. Oh man, I
- 10:42Speaker 1: got to play in the line. That sucks. I don't
- 10:44Speaker 1: want to play in the line. Everybody wants to play receiver.
- 10:47Speaker 1: It scored touchdowns, and you know that's that's where touchdown
- 10:51Speaker 1: makers are made, and Chase is certainly a touchdown maker.
- 10:53Speaker 1: But it's it's such a big need league wide that
- 10:57Speaker 1: if you can, if you can come up with a
- 10:59Speaker 1: guy that is going to be potentially projected to be
- 11:03Speaker 1: a really, really good player, I find it hard to
- 11:06Speaker 1: resist to go there. I'm with you, I've been and
- 11:10Speaker 1: I remain a card carrying member of team Sewell did
- 11:14Speaker 1: a lot of research into trying to determine why I
- 11:16Speaker 1: feel that way. The other day, here's a few things
- 11:18Speaker 1: that I came up with. In Tom Brady's playoff run
- 11:23Speaker 1: last year, so not the Super Bowl, but the four
- 11:26Speaker 1: playoff games that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers played, and he
- 11:29Speaker 1: was hit sixteen times, sixteen times in four games, four
- 11:32Speaker 1: times per game. Joe Burrow got hit eighteen times in
- 11:36Speaker 1: Week three by the Philadelphia Eagles last year and sacked eight.
- 11:39Speaker 1: He was sacked thirty two times in his nine and
- 11:42Speaker 1: a half games. That was still top ten in the NFL.
- 11:44Speaker 1: He was hit more than seventy And just remember how
- 11:48Speaker 1: devastated we were, how gutted we felt seeing him on
- 11:51Speaker 1: the back of that cart in Washington in the tenth game.
- 11:54Speaker 1: I never want to see that again. Then I look
- 11:57Speaker 1: at Piney Sewell, and I'm no expert. I don't claim
- 12:00Speaker 1: to be a grading tape, but I see a three
- 12:03Speaker 1: hundred and thirty one pound man who looks like he's felt.
- 12:06Speaker 1: I have never seen anybody at his size move like that. Furthermore,
- 12:12Speaker 1: people want to talk about the arms, thirty three at
- 12:15Speaker 1: a quarter inches, a little less than you would like.
- 12:18Speaker 1: I suppose he doesn't turn twenty one until the second
- 12:22Speaker 1: week of October. His arms actually might still be growing.
- 12:26Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know how much you grow after
- 12:28Speaker 1: the age of twenty, but it's possible. As a nineteen
- 12:31Speaker 1: year old sophomore, he won the Outland Trophy as the
- 12:33Speaker 1: nation's best offensive lineman. He did not surrender a single
- 12:36Speaker 1: sack in thirteen games. He earned Pro Football Focus, his
- 12:40Speaker 1: highest grade ever for a tackle in a Power five conference.
- 12:44Speaker 1: I do think there are going to be starters available
- 12:47Speaker 1: in the offensive line in round two, maybe round three.
- 12:50Speaker 1: There's no doubt in my mind that can get a
- 12:52Speaker 1: competent offensive lineman. But that's not what I want at
- 12:55Speaker 1: this point. I want a star. When they went to
- 12:58Speaker 1: the super Bowl twice in the eighties, Anthony Munios was
- 13:01Speaker 1: the left tackle. When they went to the playoffs six
- 13:03Speaker 1: times in seven years, beginning in two thousand and nine,
- 13:06Speaker 1: Andrew Wittworth was the left tackle. I want to maximize
- 13:10Speaker 1: the possibility of getting a guy like that to start
- 13:14Speaker 1: at one of the tackle spots for the next ten years,
- 13:17Speaker 1: right and if he does, in fact, I have to
- 13:20Speaker 1: play guard initially. I'm okay with that too, because you're
- 13:23Speaker 1: not going to bullrush that big beast. You know. Andrew
- 13:26Speaker 1: Witworth played guard initially before he went out to play
- 13:29Speaker 1: the left tackle position and now left tackle. Those were
- 13:34Speaker 1: the you mentioned Anthony Munios and Andrew Worworth, the two
- 13:37Speaker 1: best left tackles the franchise history. And the proofs in
- 13:40Speaker 1: the pudding by the stats that you talked about mentioned
- 13:42Speaker 1: the same thing in quite a few podcasts that I've
- 13:45Speaker 1: done around the country. That two Super Bowls with Anthony
- 13:50Speaker 1: in the eighties, five straight playoff appearances with Whitton the
- 13:52Speaker 1: you know in the Marvin Lewis era, those are the
- 13:54Speaker 1: two best left tackles, Pine Seul, I agree with you,
- 13:59Speaker 1: some guys are out of proportion. He is totally proportioned.
- 14:04Speaker 1: He's big everywhere, and I can I can speak from
- 14:09Speaker 1: playing against Samoans. He's originally from the island of Samoa.
- 14:13Speaker 1: These guys are like rooted trees. You can't move them
- 14:18Speaker 1: when they when they decide to hunker down, they are
- 14:22Speaker 1: literally in a movable object. Their knees were over their ankles,
- 14:25Speaker 1: their hips were over their knees, and man, they got
- 14:27Speaker 1: knee bend and it's like whoa man? Trying to move
- 14:29Speaker 1: some of these big Samoan defensive tackles was a chore. Man,
- 14:33Speaker 1: I'm telling you, it was like slept good that night
- 14:35Speaker 1: because you're dead tired. And not only that is what
- 14:39Speaker 1: we're talking about with the size and the balance, that
- 14:42Speaker 1: leads to balance. Obviously, the first thing I remember about
- 14:45Speaker 1: Anthony Munio's was he filled the doorway. He had big,
- 14:49Speaker 1: big hair at that stage when he was drafted and
- 14:51Speaker 1: he literally filled the doorway we went out in the field.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Though he looked like turn in five pound defensive back
- 14:56Speaker 1: with the sweet feet, the lateral movement in the foot court.
- 14:59Speaker 1: That's what this guy. This guy has that those kinds
- 15:02Speaker 1: of sweet feet. So yeah, I think he's I think
- 15:04Speaker 1: he's rare. Now can you nippick? Yeah, you can nippick everybody.
- 15:07Speaker 1: You can nip pick everybody in anybody. But I do
- 15:10Speaker 1: think that again, reference in the Super Bowl, Patrick Mahomes.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Hard to be Patrick Mahomes. When you run a feet
- 15:20Speaker 1: of life. What happened? The offensive line got beaten up.
- 15:23Speaker 1: So therefore in the Super Bowl the quarterback had no shot,
- 15:27Speaker 1: even the great Patrick Mahomes trying to. I mean he
- 15:30Speaker 1: was Kreskin making some of the throws that he made
- 15:33Speaker 1: literally and even he couldn't get it done. So you
- 15:37Speaker 1: need guys up front. He was pressured on twenty nine
- 15:40Speaker 1: to fifty six drop backs in the Super Bowl. He
- 15:43Speaker 1: ran scrambling around trying to find an open receiver for
- 15:46Speaker 1: four hundred and ninety seven yards that was measured on GPS.
- 15:49Speaker 1: So that's not just you know, a joke. Four hundred
- 15:51Speaker 1: and ninety seven yards running around ninety six point four
- 15:55Speaker 1: million people watched the Super Bowl last year. At times
- 15:57Speaker 1: I wonder if any of them lived in Cincinnati. Guys,
- 16:00Speaker 1: that was the ultimate lesson for no matter how good
- 16:03Speaker 1: your quarterback is or your weapons, Tyree Kill, Travis Kelsey,
- 16:07Speaker 1: Clyde Edwards a layer. If you don't have protection, you
- 16:11Speaker 1: can't get it done. And they did not score a
- 16:13Speaker 1: touchdown in the Super Bowl, the Mighty Kansas City Chiefs. Absolutely.
- 16:18Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's it's simple to me. You know,
- 16:21Speaker 1: people are gonna say, all right, chicken or the egg,
- 16:24Speaker 1: and if they draft Chase, I won't go nuts, but
- 16:28Speaker 1: I probably won't agree, but I won't go nuts. I mean,
- 16:31Speaker 1: I can see that I can make a case for
- 16:33Speaker 1: drafting any of them. Pits, Chase a suit can anybody
- 16:37Speaker 1: can make a good case. They are all three difference
- 16:40Speaker 1: makers in different ways. But to me, you have to
- 16:46Speaker 1: have a good offensive line before your weapons can operate.
- 16:52Speaker 1: If you don't have a good offensive it doesn't matter
- 16:53Speaker 1: what you have for weapons. It doesn't matter if you
- 16:55Speaker 1: have Pro bowlers across the board, future Hall of Famers
- 16:58Speaker 1: across the board. If your offensive line is not up
- 17:02Speaker 1: to snuff, going to struggle. The reason why I'll be
- 17:06Speaker 1: okay with it if they go for Chase or Pits
- 17:09Speaker 1: is when I look at the draft as rounds one
- 17:11Speaker 1: and two versus just round one. Because I do wonder
- 17:16Speaker 1: when I do bock drafts and draft simulators and stuff
- 17:18Speaker 1: like that, if the overall value of receiver weapon first,
- 17:25Speaker 1: lineman second is greater than the overall value of lineman first,
- 17:30Speaker 1: weapon second. I agree. That's That's what I was referencing
- 17:32Speaker 1: in terms of the overall depth of you know, what
- 17:35Speaker 1: would be available to you with that next next selection.
- 17:39Speaker 1: So instead of tunnel vision just at five, you know,
- 17:41Speaker 1: you're thinking first, second, and even third round, you're gonna
- 17:44Speaker 1: have three of the top sixty some odd picks, you know,
- 17:47Speaker 1: in the entire draft, and what's what's the best order
- 17:50Speaker 1: the best way to do that, And that's what they're
- 17:52Speaker 1: going through right now is stacking their board by position
- 17:56Speaker 1: and then the big board. And they're probably still in
- 17:59Speaker 1: the process as we do this podcast to doing that
- 18:02Speaker 1: sort of thing. So it's going to be interesting interesting
- 18:05Speaker 1: to see what they do decide. And uh, you know,
- 18:08Speaker 1: I mean Pits that you look at you look at him,
- 18:11Speaker 1: I mean, he's a he's a weapon to I don't
- 18:14Speaker 1: even look at him as a tight end. I look
- 18:16Speaker 1: at him as an ex receiver because you go three
- 18:19Speaker 1: receivers and you put him all by himself in one
- 18:23Speaker 1: on one situation, and who's going to cover that big
- 18:25Speaker 1: bad boy at six to five plus a round, two
- 18:29Speaker 1: hundred fifty pounds running four fours with an eighty two
- 18:32Speaker 1: inch wingspan. So when he's covered, he's open one on one.
- 18:36Speaker 1: I mean, so you have matchup problems. And then if
- 18:39Speaker 1: you decide to go Nickel, he's a willing blocker. I'm
- 18:42Speaker 1: not gonna say he's close to dominant. You know, he's
- 18:45Speaker 1: maybe slightly less than solid, but he's willing, So run
- 18:49Speaker 1: the ball. And then if you don't go Nickel, spread
- 18:52Speaker 1: them out and put him in a matchup. So now
- 18:54Speaker 1: you have Now you have you punch and making them
- 18:58Speaker 1: counterprins instead of the other way around. You're looking for
- 19:01Speaker 1: something from a weapon standpoint to give you an advantage
- 19:04Speaker 1: to punch them, and they're like, oh, now they have
- 19:07Speaker 1: to counter and can't you know, in a situation with pits,
- 19:11Speaker 1: maybe you can't make the right call. You know, whatever
- 19:13Speaker 1: your answer is, they have an answer for the answer
- 19:16Speaker 1: because of the mismatch that he gives from a physical standpoint.
- 19:19Speaker 1: But yeah, I don't I don't look at him necessarily
- 19:23Speaker 1: as a tight end. I don't, you know. I think
- 19:26Speaker 1: he's a he's a true hybrid, But I look at
- 19:28Speaker 1: him as more of a receiver than a than a
- 19:31Speaker 1: than a tight end. Darren Waller, Yeah, Darren Waller, I
- 19:35Speaker 1: think that when I'll go back to Kellen Winslow senior,
- 19:40Speaker 1: what what Don Correll was doing with Kellen Winslow senior,
- 19:43Speaker 1: back when we beat him in the Freezer Bowl, and
- 19:45Speaker 1: when they were good with that forty nine ers air
- 19:48Speaker 1: correall with Charlie Joyner and and you know, players like that.
- 19:53Speaker 1: He was. He was a receiver. He wasn't a tight end.
- 19:55Speaker 1: That that dude was a big receiver that caused everybody
- 19:59Speaker 1: mismatch problems. And he could still be growing. He was
- 20:04Speaker 1: born three days before Pena Sewell. Let's move on to
- 20:07Speaker 1: the next topic. Let's just say they take our advice
- 20:11Speaker 1: and select Sewell number five, leading, leaving a need for
- 20:14Speaker 1: a deep threat at wide receiver. Give me three names
- 20:18Speaker 1: you like in round two, and they don't necessarily have
- 20:20Speaker 1: to be wide receivers. You might want an edge rusher
- 20:23Speaker 1: or whatever. But but give me three names for round two. Yeah,
- 20:26Speaker 1: I mean i'd go I'd probably go wide receiver, and
- 20:31Speaker 1: my wide would be Diami Brown from North Carolina. I
- 20:35Speaker 1: like him. He's got decent size, six feet, about one
- 20:38Speaker 1: hundred and ninety pounds, still runs in the mid four fours.
- 20:42Speaker 1: He's got, you know, some some decent length to him
- 20:44Speaker 1: as well. In twenty four games, one hundred and six
- 20:46Speaker 1: catches over twenty one hundred yards, twenty one hundred thirty
- 20:50Speaker 1: three yards, twenty touchdowns on average over twenty yards per reception.
- 20:54Speaker 1: I think I think he's he's a dynamic guy. I
- 20:57Speaker 1: think he'd be somebody. One of the things that I
- 21:02Speaker 1: like about Joe Burrow, and obviously what Joe Burrow likes
- 21:06Speaker 1: about Chase is they've done it together. They've already done
- 21:10Speaker 1: it and at LSU in that offense that they ran
- 21:13Speaker 1: with Joe Brady, I was a pro style offense with
- 21:16Speaker 1: pro style concepts that the Bengals have adapted a lot
- 21:19Speaker 1: into their scheme. And in two thy nineteen Joe Burrow
- 21:25Speaker 1: and Chase hooked up for ridiculous numbers. I mean chases
- 21:29Speaker 1: numbers are still SEC records. I mean, it's it's it's stupid.
- 21:34Speaker 1: His numbers are eight let's see, eighty four catches, seventeen
- 21:39Speaker 1: eighty yards, twenty touchdowns. The yards and the touchdowns are
- 21:42Speaker 1: SEC records, still averaged over twenty one yards a catch.
- 21:46Speaker 1: So they're well coached, they're well trained, they know each
- 21:52Speaker 1: other cold. That all translates to the NFL. When you're
- 21:57Speaker 1: scouting a guy like Chase, the routes that he's run
- 22:01Speaker 1: against SEC corners, which are NFL corners, and the production
- 22:05Speaker 1: all translates well to the National Football League. And Joe
- 22:08Speaker 1: Burrows the one that was thrown on the rock and
- 22:10Speaker 1: then he's opted out this year. But in a year
- 22:14Speaker 1: where the Union staying on, I'm not going to do
- 22:17Speaker 1: much in the offseason. You may have a mini camp,
- 22:20Speaker 1: you know, and go to training camp. How much of
- 22:22Speaker 1: an edge would it be for Joe Burrow to already
- 22:24Speaker 1: have all of that advanced work with Chase. He's not
- 22:28Speaker 1: worked with a guy who's never been with before. He's
- 22:31Speaker 1: not thrown to a guy that I've never thrown to.
- 22:33Speaker 1: This guy, I don't know what his gates like. I
- 22:34Speaker 1: don't know how far I have to throw the deep
- 22:36Speaker 1: ball for him to make plays. That's all that's all done,
- 22:39Speaker 1: that's already all there. So that's why I wouldn't be
- 22:43Speaker 1: totally disgusted if they took Chase. That's a big, big
- 22:46Speaker 1: factor in my mind. It's it's actually a tiebreaker in
- 22:49Speaker 1: my mind, honestly, you know. But so here's another guy
- 22:53Speaker 1: that I go with it following that, that that line
- 22:56Speaker 1: of thinking. Terris Marshall lsu six two two five four
- 23:02Speaker 1: four forty long, you know, seventy eight and an eighth wingspan,
- 23:07Speaker 1: almost thirty three inch arms length to his arms. I mean,
- 23:11Speaker 1: in nineteen games, ninety four catches over fourteen hundred yards,
- 23:15Speaker 1: twenty three touchdowns, fifteen yard average. He's a player. He
- 23:19Speaker 1: can run, he can stretch the field. Another guy would
- 23:22Speaker 1: be Rashad Bateman, kid from Minnesota. You know, I think
- 23:25Speaker 1: he's he's a possibility. His numbers are pretty good in
- 23:30Speaker 1: six ft one hundred and ninety pounds four four forty
- 23:32Speaker 1: as well. I mean, there's that's what That's what I'm
- 23:35Speaker 1: saying in my mind. There's a lot of guys, there's
- 23:38Speaker 1: there's a lot of receivers, but you can probably say
- 23:40Speaker 1: you can say the same thing for offensive linement. There
- 23:42Speaker 1: are a lot of offensive linement. You can see in
- 23:45Speaker 1: my mind, Dan, everybody's saying this is a great draft
- 23:47Speaker 1: for offensive linement. I think is a great draft for guards.
- 23:50Speaker 1: I think some of these tackles are guards because you know,
- 23:55Speaker 1: you're you're drafting a goose to play tackle, but physically
- 24:00Speaker 1: you might be drafting the duck and a duck at
- 24:02Speaker 1: the goose, so so they may have to kick inside
- 24:05Speaker 1: to play guard a little bit. You know, in terms
- 24:07Speaker 1: of arm length in particular, a lot of these guys
- 24:10Speaker 1: are in my mind, thirty three inches is that's about
- 24:14Speaker 1: the break breakpoint. If you're into thirty three inches, And
- 24:17Speaker 1: if you're if you've already always had short arms and
- 24:21Speaker 1: have been able to overcome it. Normally, you'll have extraordinary
- 24:24Speaker 1: balance because now you're in a phone booth and the
- 24:26Speaker 1: guy can't get you off your feet. But if you
- 24:29Speaker 1: have short arms, are not great balance, you're cooked. You're
- 24:31Speaker 1: you're in big trouble. So the guys with short arms
- 24:33Speaker 1: have some other physical talent that compensates for the lack
- 24:37Speaker 1: of one thing. They have something else that they've learned
- 24:40Speaker 1: to employ that makes up for it. But yeah, it's
- 24:45Speaker 1: it's it's going to be very interesting. I'd be happy
- 24:48Speaker 1: with any any three of those guys. You know, I'm
- 24:50Speaker 1: not sure that all be there in the second round,
- 24:52Speaker 1: and some of the linemen you think might be there
- 24:54Speaker 1: in the second round aren't because when the coaches start
- 24:57Speaker 1: doing evaluating, you know, along with the gems and there,
- 25:00Speaker 1: now it's a different animal than the draft analysts and
- 25:03Speaker 1: everybody doing their evaluations. So I wrote down three names
- 25:06Speaker 1: as well for second round picks that I like if
- 25:10Speaker 1: they select Sewell in round one. One of my three
- 25:13Speaker 1: names was one of the guys you mentioned. Diamy Brown,
- 25:15Speaker 1: the wide receiver out of North Carolina, had more than
- 25:18Speaker 1: fifty catches each of the last two years and average
- 25:20Speaker 1: more than twenty yards per catch each season, so obviously
- 25:24Speaker 1: he would bring that a deep threat. I wrote down
- 25:26Speaker 1: Elijah Moore, the wide receiver from Ole, miss A little
- 25:29Speaker 1: bit smaller than I would like, five nine, one seventy eight,
- 25:32Speaker 1: a little bit gadgety there, but just such an explosive
- 25:35Speaker 1: weapon four three five forty fastest three cone drill of
- 25:39Speaker 1: any of the wide receivers. The Patriots always put a
- 25:41Speaker 1: lot of stock into that had nearly twelve hundred receiving
- 25:43Speaker 1: yards last year. Don't know if it'll be there in
- 25:46Speaker 1: round two, but I wrote down that name, and then
- 25:48Speaker 1: I did write down one edge rusher that I think
- 25:51Speaker 1: probably would be there when the Bengals select thirty eighth
- 25:55Speaker 1: overall in the second round. Carlos Basham out of wake
- 25:58Speaker 1: Forest sixty three two seven four. We had a four
- 26:01Speaker 1: five nine forty, had eleven sacks a couple of years
- 26:05Speaker 1: ago at Wake Forest, So that would be a scenario where, Okay,
- 26:09Speaker 1: there's still a lot of wide receivers left. We're gonna
- 26:12Speaker 1: get our edge rusher and then take a wide receiver
- 26:14Speaker 1: in round three. That's why I wrote down the name.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Carlos Basham. Yeah, I like a guy that you saw
- 26:20Speaker 1: a Peyton Turner. I'm not sure that might be a
- 26:23Speaker 1: little rich. He's like a two. Maybe he might be
- 26:26Speaker 1: there for them in the third round, but I bash
- 26:28Speaker 1: him's a guy that I've got in my notes as well.
- 26:30Speaker 1: But this kid out of Houston's a little bit bigger,
- 26:33Speaker 1: six five plus two seventy. He's got thirty five thirty
- 26:40Speaker 1: five inch arms. That's long. He's long. He's long and strong.
- 26:44Speaker 1: He's got good feet ten and a quarter hands. He
- 26:47Speaker 1: gets those hands on you he's he's really good with
- 26:49Speaker 1: his hands, and he's got multiple moves to rip, the swim,
- 26:52Speaker 1: the spin. He's he's pretty advanced. Eighty four inch you know,
- 26:55Speaker 1: overall wingspan. My gosh, you know they talk about Pitts
- 27:00Speaker 1: an eighty two inch wingspan, which is crazy for a
- 27:01Speaker 1: tight end. But this, this big dude eighty four inch wingspan.
- 27:04Speaker 1: I mean, he's gonna be back in the Kennon lever
- 27:06Speaker 1: the back of your shoulder pads before you can even
- 27:08Speaker 1: even realize it. So yeah, I mean there's I wouldn't
- 27:12Speaker 1: I wouldn't be the least bit disappointed if they go
- 27:14Speaker 1: with a good edge guy in the second round as well.
- 27:16Speaker 1: I think we're in agreement that the three big needs
- 27:20Speaker 1: are offensive line, wide receiver, and edge rush. Those those
- 27:25Speaker 1: are the three. However order they go, I'd like to
- 27:28Speaker 1: see those three things be addressed early and then double down,
- 27:34Speaker 1: you know, go go on line. Defensive line and dan
- 27:38Speaker 1: running backs are always you know, undervalued. Really good running
- 27:43Speaker 1: backs is going to be there in the fifth, sixth round.
- 27:45Speaker 1: If you've got to get another running back to get
- 27:47Speaker 1: in the mix with with Geo departing, you can get
- 27:49Speaker 1: you can find guys that's even more so than the
- 27:52Speaker 1: wide receiver position, and they're devalued. They're not as valuable
- 27:55Speaker 1: as wide receiver. So you know, and it's strange two quarterbacks.
- 28:00Speaker 1: These guys, I mean, everybody's going to be draft in
- 28:03Speaker 1: the quarter The first three picks, obviously we're thinking are
- 28:05Speaker 1: going to be quarterbacks. What it's going to be interesting
- 28:07Speaker 1: to me, will Atlanta go at the fourth option at
- 28:10Speaker 1: quarterback and overpay, you know, to to draft that guy,
- 28:15Speaker 1: or will they take the best non quarterback in their mind,
- 28:19Speaker 1: you know, in the draft, and then after that quarterback run,
- 28:22Speaker 1: they all get pushed back. So you're gonna and people
- 28:25Speaker 1: are like, yeah, well boy, the quarterbacks drafted early. A
- 28:29Speaker 1: lot of them bust because they're overdrafted. They have guys
- 28:32Speaker 1: that should have been draft in the second and third
- 28:34Speaker 1: round going in the top ten in some cases. And
- 28:37Speaker 1: then the guys that go that that slide because you know,
- 28:40Speaker 1: now they're oh they weren't in the first five or
- 28:42Speaker 1: six they stink. Get them in the fourth to sixth round.
- 28:46Speaker 1: These guys can play, they have good NFL careers, So
- 28:49Speaker 1: it's like real, real early, and you can get yourself
- 28:52Speaker 1: a nice bargain on one later. All right, let's go
- 28:55Speaker 1: to the next scenario. They take either chase or pits
- 28:58Speaker 1: number five overall. So now we're looking at an offensive
- 29:02Speaker 1: lineman in a round two. Who are some of the
- 29:05Speaker 1: guys that you like, that you think have a decent
- 29:07Speaker 1: chance of being there at number thirty eight overall? Yeah,
- 29:10Speaker 1: I mean, I've got some interest in a guy, and
- 29:15Speaker 1: I've heard conflicting reports, but I've heard more reports that
- 29:19Speaker 1: maybe this guy might not be there early in the
- 29:22Speaker 1: second round. Walker a little out of Stanford. I think
- 29:24Speaker 1: this guy six seven plus three hundred and fifteen pounds
- 29:28Speaker 1: very athletic. For as tall as he is, his arms
- 29:31Speaker 1: aren't super long thirty three and three quarters, but you know,
- 29:34Speaker 1: long enough his reaches eighty one and three quarters, so
- 29:37Speaker 1: he has some some overall length to him. But his
- 29:40Speaker 1: problem is he got hurt early in two nineteen and
- 29:43Speaker 1: opted out in twenty twenty. You know, you got to
- 29:46Speaker 1: you got to go back to two eighteen to get
- 29:48Speaker 1: tape on him and get a solid evaluation. But he
- 29:50Speaker 1: has gotten bigger and stronger. He's an incredible athlete, though,
- 29:54Speaker 1: And a lot of these linemen this year man their grandfather,
- 29:58Speaker 1: their father, their brother, their uncles, their cousins. They all
- 30:02Speaker 1: played in the NFL. A lot of these guys have
- 30:04Speaker 1: huge bloodlines. Slater's dad played in the NBA. You know,
- 30:07Speaker 1: he's got really good feet, and you know, you can
- 30:09Speaker 1: see why the genetics are there for his dad. You're
- 30:12Speaker 1: playing the NBA's You know, Dan, you've got to be
- 30:14Speaker 1: a decent athlete man, big body guys that can run
- 30:16Speaker 1: in short space, quickness and cutting, all those sorts of things.
- 30:20Speaker 1: So I like him. Um, I'm not I'm not sure
- 30:23Speaker 1: he'd be there, but and then, and then some people
- 30:26Speaker 1: would probably say, you know that that's too big a
- 30:28Speaker 1: risk because you know, now you got to go to
- 30:30Speaker 1: twenty eighteen to really evaluate the tape. But if you're
- 30:34Speaker 1: an athlete, you're an athlete, you know. So I don't know.
- 30:36Speaker 1: I like him. I can Bird from Penn State has
- 30:39Speaker 1: a little bit of appeal to me, you know. Um,
- 30:42Speaker 1: but his arms less than thirty three inches, so I
- 30:44Speaker 1: think he's more of a guard. I'm sure he's over.
- 30:48Speaker 1: He's compensated for his short arms. His hands aren't real big,
- 30:51Speaker 1: his reaches under eighty inches. He's not he's six six,
- 30:54Speaker 1: but he's not long with that six six. But he's athletic,
- 30:57Speaker 1: you know, and he's he's he's he's a very good
- 31:00Speaker 1: football player, played at a high level of football. U
- 31:03Speaker 1: Dylan Redunds, who got Player of the Week and practice
- 31:05Speaker 1: player of the week at the at the Senior Bowl.
- 31:07Speaker 1: I like that kid. Over six five, over three hundred pounds,
- 31:10Speaker 1: and he's got some length his arms with thirty four inches,
- 31:13Speaker 1: he's over eighty inch. Reached North Dakota State, you know,
- 31:16Speaker 1: as a good program of the small schools. I like
- 31:20Speaker 1: Aaron Banks a little bit too from Notre Dame as
- 31:23Speaker 1: a guard. I like him inside. I also like Landon Dickerson.
- 31:26Speaker 1: I know he's got I know he's got some some
- 31:28Speaker 1: injury issues that he's dealing with, but I like him
- 31:32Speaker 1: because he's a He's one of those guys that is
- 31:35Speaker 1: a leader. You know, he's he has one of these
- 31:38Speaker 1: unbelievable attitudes and he kind of lifts the whole the
- 31:40Speaker 1: whole room, the whole offensive line room. And to me,
- 31:44Speaker 1: if they can get a starting guard, I wouldn't have
- 31:47Speaker 1: a tremendous issue with that. And you know, in my mind,
- 31:54Speaker 1: I still think Fred Johnson has some potential. I still
- 31:58Speaker 1: think Adnagy has some potential. When I look at Fred
- 32:01Speaker 1: Johnson and I look at i Dentergy, I'm thinking they've
- 32:05Speaker 1: got what you're gonna get in a third or fourth round,
- 32:08Speaker 1: maybe even the second round. They've got potential. Now, can
- 32:11Speaker 1: Frank Pollock get it out of him? I think he
- 32:13Speaker 1: can so. In my mind, I think those guys can
- 32:16Speaker 1: really make a jump from last year to this year,
- 32:20Speaker 1: year one to year two for Dentagy and Fred just
- 32:23Speaker 1: has to, you know, understand the game's got to be
- 32:26Speaker 1: more important to him than it is. And I think
- 32:28Speaker 1: Frank Pollock may help that along a little bit. I'm
- 32:31Speaker 1: not going to pretend to be an expert in offensive
- 32:34Speaker 1: line play, but the Athletic came out with a consensus
- 32:36Speaker 1: big board, where basically they took fifty or more than
- 32:39Speaker 1: fifty big boards from all the various draft gurus out
- 32:42Speaker 1: there and then combined him to produce, you know, a
- 32:46Speaker 1: one through three hundred order based on all of these
- 32:48Speaker 1: people out there studying the draft. So the Bengals have
- 32:51Speaker 1: the thirty eighth pick, that's they're picking the second round.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Alex Leatherwood from Alabama came in at thirty eight on
- 32:57Speaker 1: the consensus board. Samuel caused me from Texas thirty nine,
- 33:01Speaker 1: Eikenberg whom you mentioned, forty seven Radin's if that's how
- 33:05Speaker 1: it's pronounced from North Dakota State forty six. So those
- 33:09Speaker 1: are the kinds of guys that are likely to be
- 33:11Speaker 1: there when they are selecting in the second round if
- 33:15Speaker 1: they go for a weapon in the first. So there's
- 33:17Speaker 1: going to be somebody right around that, you know, thirty
- 33:19Speaker 1: eight on the consensus big board that'll be there. Let's
- 33:23Speaker 1: go a little bit deeper into the draft, rounds three
- 33:26Speaker 1: in beyond, So this is a real wild card for
- 33:29Speaker 1: US three players, any position that you like. Rounds three
- 33:34Speaker 1: in beyond. I like a kid from right up the
- 33:38Speaker 1: road in Miami, Ohio, an offensive lineman, a tackle, fourth round,
- 33:44Speaker 1: probably no earlier than that, sixty eight three, twenty pounds.
- 33:49Speaker 1: He's got an eighty three and seven eighths wingspan, he's
- 33:54Speaker 1: got a thirty five and eighth reach, So he's a big, long, tall,
- 33:58Speaker 1: athletic kid. Me Doyle is his name, and he looks
- 34:02Speaker 1: like to me like he's a pretty good football player.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Now would he need to be developed, you know, in
- 34:05Speaker 1: the max? Obviously not the level of football that other
- 34:09Speaker 1: other guys would have competed in. But but I like him. Uh.
- 34:13Speaker 1: From the third round on um Spencer Brown from Northern Iowa.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Another big tackle six to eight three eleven who's got
- 34:22Speaker 1: a almost a thirty five inch wing uh reach thirty
- 34:27Speaker 1: four and three quarters an eighty two and a half
- 34:29Speaker 1: inch wingspan. You know another guy that's both tall and
- 34:33Speaker 1: long and hopefully long and strong. Uh Dante Smith out
- 34:37Speaker 1: of East Carolina, a big guy that I think has
- 34:39Speaker 1: some He's eighty five inches on his wingspan. Eighty five inches.
- 34:44Speaker 1: That's that's crazy. I mean, that's that's some of the
- 34:46Speaker 1: linemen that I like. Uh, I like A. I'm not
- 34:50Speaker 1: sure he'll be there for the fourth round. I think
- 34:52Speaker 1: he's going to be no later than the third round guy,
- 34:54Speaker 1: I'm not sure if he's as early in the third
- 34:57Speaker 1: rounds of bankers are picking. But Dale oh day Yngbo
- 35:01Speaker 1: from Vanderbilt, is that how you stay pick him? We'll
- 35:04Speaker 1: know how to say yeah, Dale, my good buddy. Dale
- 35:08Speaker 1: from Vanderbilt six five two eighty five. Another guy that's
- 35:11Speaker 1: got some size on the edge there. His wingspans eighty
- 35:14Speaker 1: six and three eights. I mean she's thirty five and
- 35:18Speaker 1: a quarter arm length and he's got some athleticism, you know,
- 35:23Speaker 1: to go with it. A guy like that, I think
- 35:25Speaker 1: would be would would be some added value. I could
- 35:29Speaker 1: see that all right. Here are a few names I
- 35:31Speaker 1: wrote down for round three and beyond, keeping in mind
- 35:34Speaker 1: that the Bengals third round pick will be number sixty
- 35:37Speaker 1: nine overall. Defensive tackle. Milton Williams from Louisiana Tech six three,
- 35:44Speaker 1: two eighty four. A little smaller than you would like,
- 35:46Speaker 1: but ran a four six forty with a thirty eight
- 35:50Speaker 1: and a half inch vertical at two hundred and eighty
- 35:52Speaker 1: four pounds, had ten sacks two years ago, the last
- 35:54Speaker 1: time he played a full season, and every time I
- 35:57Speaker 1: do a draft mock simulator on one of these websites,
- 36:01Speaker 1: he is always available. In round three. He came in
- 36:05Speaker 1: number eighty nine on the consensus top three hundred boards,
- 36:08Speaker 1: so he's almost certainly going to be there in the
- 36:10Speaker 1: third could be there in round four. Milton Williams would
- 36:14Speaker 1: be a name to remember. I wrote down Jordan Smith
- 36:16Speaker 1: from UAB as an edge rusher. Now there's a character
- 36:20Speaker 1: issue from early in his college career. Started out at Florida,
- 36:23Speaker 1: got suspended for a credit card incident, wound up leaving,
- 36:26Speaker 1: went to junior college, wound up at UAB. But he's
- 36:29Speaker 1: in the mode of edge rushers that the Bengals have
- 36:32Speaker 1: historically gone after because he's tall and lean, with a
- 36:35Speaker 1: chance to put on weight. Six six two fifty five,
- 36:38Speaker 1: had ten sacks a couple of years ago at UAB.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Now I'm going to throw in a running back that
- 36:43Speaker 1: I got to see calling UC games, Kenneth Gainwell from Memphis.
- 36:47Speaker 1: He probably would not be there after round four at
- 36:51Speaker 1: the earliest, so that might be earlier than the Bengals
- 36:54Speaker 1: want to go for a running back. But two years ago,
- 36:56Speaker 1: the last time he played for Memphis, he was unbelievable
- 36:59Speaker 1: fourteen dr rushing yard, six hundred receiving yards. UC couldn't
- 37:03Speaker 1: stop him. So I'll just throw in that name as
- 37:05Speaker 1: a possible running back, Kenneth Gainwell. I've heard he's outstanding
- 37:09Speaker 1: out of the backfield and a huge threat out of
- 37:12Speaker 1: the backfield. You know, I've heard a lot of a
- 37:14Speaker 1: lot of teams throwing his name out there, uh in
- 37:17Speaker 1: in that type of that type of scenario. It is interesting,
- 37:20Speaker 1: it's it's it's going to be an interesting, uh interesting day,
- 37:23Speaker 1: interesting draft. Honestly, you know, there's there's always going to
- 37:26Speaker 1: be and how different the board that you talked about,
- 37:30Speaker 1: the consensus board of all of the draft analyst gurus,
- 37:33Speaker 1: and then if you take a consensus board of the
- 37:35Speaker 1: of the teams with their personnel departments and in the
- 37:38Speaker 1: Bengals case, with the coaches, you know, evaluating and grading
- 37:41Speaker 1: because as we know, Dan, this ain't no science. It's
- 37:44Speaker 1: it's no so opinions are huge and there's going to
- 37:48Speaker 1: be all kinds of different opinions on you know, where
- 37:51Speaker 1: to where to rate guys, where to stack guys and uh,
- 37:54Speaker 1: and it's it's I don't know. In my mind, I
- 37:57Speaker 1: think the the other thing to consider in that first
- 37:59Speaker 1: round is sixty percent of the time lineman get a
- 38:04Speaker 1: second contract drafted in the first round, it's like twenty
- 38:07Speaker 1: five percent for receivers something like that. It's less than half,
- 38:11Speaker 1: which you can understand. You can make a quicker, a
- 38:15Speaker 1: quicker decision on if a guy's a bust or not
- 38:17Speaker 1: at receiver than potentially at the at the offensive line position.
- 38:21Speaker 1: But um so, there's so many factors that go into
- 38:25Speaker 1: the evaluation process. But and the other thing, Dan, I
- 38:28Speaker 1: think every round I would be listening to my phone,
- 38:32Speaker 1: not just the first round, because you have a high
- 38:34Speaker 1: pick every round. So if if there's a run on
- 38:40Speaker 1: a position that you've you've got a need for or
- 38:45Speaker 1: whatever highly rated, it's like, all right, well, I'm not
- 38:48Speaker 1: going to get a guy that I really fits my
- 38:51Speaker 1: need as well as where he is on the board.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Why don't I move back and get back to this
- 38:54Speaker 1: spot where there's better chance for me to hit more.
- 38:57Speaker 1: So need an evaluation of rank of player and pick
- 39:01Speaker 1: up an extra pick to boot. So teams that have
- 39:04Speaker 1: that need for the player that you don't you know,
- 39:08Speaker 1: every round, they're going to be at a high spot
- 39:10Speaker 1: in that round of the draft where they may get
- 39:13Speaker 1: a phone call and it's like, yeah, well that makes
- 39:15Speaker 1: some sense. I'll take an extra fourth, you know, to
- 39:18Speaker 1: move back to the middle of the third round instead
- 39:20Speaker 1: of the fifth pick of the third round, and then
- 39:23Speaker 1: I still am right where I need to be to
- 39:25Speaker 1: get on my third round board. These guys are gone,
- 39:27Speaker 1: but these guys I can get them still fifteen, sixteen, seventeen,
- 39:32Speaker 1: eighteen instead of you know, number five. So I think
- 39:36Speaker 1: I think they're in an advantageous position, you know, all
- 39:39Speaker 1: three days of the draft from that regard. All right,
- 39:42Speaker 1: we've reached the moment of truth. The Dave Lapham prediction historically,
- 39:48Speaker 1: more often than not, you nail it. Twenty twelve, the
- 39:51Speaker 1: world said they were taking David de Castro, You correctly
- 39:55Speaker 1: said they would draft Kevin Zeitler. The next year, nobody
- 39:58Speaker 1: was talking about Tyler effort because the Bengals already had
- 40:01Speaker 1: your main Gresham. You said they would take the Notre
- 40:04Speaker 1: Dame tight end. Twenty fourteen, you nailed Darques Denar two seventeen,
- 40:09Speaker 1: you nailed John Ross two eighteen. Bengals fans got mad
- 40:13Speaker 1: at you because you said Frank Ragnow the Lions took
- 40:17Speaker 1: him one pick before the Bengals, and people somehow think
- 40:20Speaker 1: they took him because you predicted it, and like the
- 40:22Speaker 1: Lions don't have a scouting department. He's turned out to
- 40:25Speaker 1: be a great player. So let's get to your prediction.
- 40:28Speaker 1: The Bengals are on the clock. We know quarterbacks have
- 40:31Speaker 1: gone one, two, three. Who do you think the Bengals
- 40:35Speaker 1: wind up taking at number five? Yeah, I think there's
- 40:38Speaker 1: a good chance that Arthur Smith takes pits. I think
- 40:43Speaker 1: that Matt Ryan can play still, you know, and it's like,
- 40:48Speaker 1: all right, well, the Falcons, they probably won't be in
- 40:50Speaker 1: the top five, or they don't want to be in
- 40:53Speaker 1: the top five, so maybe they do try to take
- 40:55Speaker 1: their next quarterback to develop after Matt Ryan and I
- 40:59Speaker 1: can understand and if they would, but man to me,
- 41:02Speaker 1: I don't know. I think I think that's an overreaction.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Uh maybe they trade back, you know that that the
- 41:07Speaker 1: draft could start there. Maybe they trade back and somebody
- 41:11Speaker 1: is trading up for a quarterback that doesn't have him
- 41:14Speaker 1: Matt Ryan, or is trading up for Pits. Or if
- 41:17Speaker 1: Atlanta really likes Pits, maybe they'll they'll they'll take Pits.
- 41:21Speaker 1: But let's assume that Pits is off the board, that
- 41:23Speaker 1: Atlanta took Pits, which I could see Arthur Smith doing
- 41:26Speaker 1: and having a nice chest piece, you know, to mess
- 41:28Speaker 1: around with their Uh So the Bengals, in my mind,
- 41:32Speaker 1: it's down to two animals, you know, and and they're there.
- 41:34Speaker 1: They are They're Martians, they're aliens. These guys are freakazoids athletically.
- 41:39Speaker 1: I mean the numbers that Chase put up, you know,
- 41:41Speaker 1: for threes and the forty eleven foot broad jump, forty
- 41:46Speaker 1: two or three inch vertical I mean, that's ridiculous. And
- 41:49Speaker 1: when you watch him on tape, he throws guys around.
- 41:53Speaker 1: I mean, when guys are trying to get their hands
- 41:54Speaker 1: on him, he just like you know, he dismisses them.
- 41:57Speaker 1: He is so strong, so powerful, he attacks the football.
- 42:01Speaker 1: I mean, he's he's a he's a gifted player. And
- 42:04Speaker 1: then all the reasons that we talked about his familiarity
- 42:08Speaker 1: between your franchise quarterback and Chase is to me, that's
- 42:13Speaker 1: a big, big deciding factor. That's a that's a big play.
- 42:19Speaker 1: And I'm almost fifty fifty. I'll be honest with you,
- 42:22Speaker 1: I'm almost fifty fifty, but I am gonna go seul.
- 42:27Speaker 1: But I I would It's like one in one A
- 42:30Speaker 1: And and I can almost reverse him for the reasons
- 42:33Speaker 1: that we talked about earlier in the podcast, that if
- 42:37Speaker 1: you've got a chance to solidify your offensive line with
- 42:40Speaker 1: a guy like him, and if he starts out inside
- 42:42Speaker 1: a guard, so be it. Um. And that scar Joe Burrow,
- 42:47Speaker 1: even though he's back to back to start right at
- 42:50Speaker 1: the beginning of the regular season, don't want to scar
- 42:53Speaker 1: on the other knee, you know, don't don't want him,
- 42:56Speaker 1: don't want him hit anymore like that. And and I
- 42:59Speaker 1: think in my mind, probably there's better depth in the
- 43:05Speaker 1: offensive line in the second round. Then there is wide
- 43:09Speaker 1: receiver in the second round. I think that there's better
- 43:13Speaker 1: there's probably after after Chase and a couple of other
- 43:17Speaker 1: couple of Alabamas, there's a big drop and Suel Slater
- 43:22Speaker 1: and then a big drop. Sooner there's more guys. There
- 43:27Speaker 1: will be more guys in that second round. So if
- 43:29Speaker 1: I start to talk myself into that, I could see
- 43:32Speaker 1: I could see going Chase instead of instead of Seoul.
- 43:36Speaker 1: But I'll probably as a form alignment, I'll probably stay
- 43:40Speaker 1: with the Penna sul choice and roll roll with that.
- 43:45Speaker 1: All right, Well, I'll have to go the other way then,
- 43:47Speaker 1: just to be different, I'll predict that they'll take Chase.
- 43:49Speaker 1: I do think the Burrow to Chase factor is huge,
- 43:53Speaker 1: and I thought this description of Chase was right on
- 43:56Speaker 1: the money. He looks like a fullback but runs like
- 43:59Speaker 1: a wide receipt ever, I mean as strong as you
- 44:01Speaker 1: can be, and yet ran that four three eight forty
- 44:04Speaker 1: at his pro day. Joe Burrow did not have much
- 44:08Speaker 1: success throwing the deep ball last year, and I think
- 44:10Speaker 1: that was because of the targets, not because of Joe
- 44:13Speaker 1: Burrow to have that guy that can take the top
- 44:15Speaker 1: off the defense and force the safeties to respect that
- 44:18Speaker 1: deep threat. I just I have the feeling that's going
- 44:22Speaker 1: to be the deciding factor Chase in round one, offensive
- 44:26Speaker 1: lineman in round two. But as we said at the
- 44:28Speaker 1: very beginning, they can't go wrong, they can't go wrong.
- 44:32Speaker 1: And I'll go just like you, I could be talked
- 44:34Speaker 1: to that so easily because you know, I really am
- 44:39Speaker 1: I really am torn split. It's not as clean cut
- 44:42Speaker 1: as it was to me before. Because this guy, Chase
- 44:47Speaker 1: is a freak, is a freak in terms of pound
- 44:50Speaker 1: for pound, the overall strength of Chase is probably as
- 44:56Speaker 1: good as they've had an LSU and for him to
- 44:59Speaker 1: just throw people around like he throws them around. And
- 45:04Speaker 1: you know, like I was talking talking about before they
- 45:07Speaker 1: did sign Riley Reef, they still do have guys that
- 45:10Speaker 1: they can they can work and develop. They did sign
- 45:14Speaker 1: they did sign Spain inside and I mean Michael Jordan
- 45:19Speaker 1: he should be a guy that you can develop. I
- 45:21Speaker 1: mean he's got a lot of tools, can't you know?
- 45:24Speaker 1: Do you give up on Michael Jordan. It's not like
- 45:27Speaker 1: they're they don't have anything in their offensive line I'm
- 45:32Speaker 1: going to Chase. I could go Chase so easily. I
- 45:37Speaker 1: could go Chase. But if you if you had to
- 45:39Speaker 1: pick between Chase and Pits, what would you do. I'd
- 45:41Speaker 1: take Chase, so would I? So would I. I would
- 45:44Speaker 1: take Chase because it took Pits to put him at
- 45:47Speaker 1: the X. That's where I put Chase. I put Chase
- 45:49Speaker 1: over there at the X and say go beat people
- 45:52Speaker 1: up one on one. And he's when you watch him,
- 45:55Speaker 1: he is so smooth in his route running. I mean,
- 45:57Speaker 1: he's so fluid and so smooth. And I'm not saying
- 46:00Speaker 1: that Pitts isn't, but you know he's not. He's not
- 46:06Speaker 1: a true wide receiver like Chases. So yeah, it's it's
- 46:11Speaker 1: very interesting, Dan, very interesting. I wish we could pick
- 46:14Speaker 1: them both. It'd be great, so do they Unfortunately that's
- 46:19Speaker 1: not in the cards. All right. That was fun, and
- 46:22Speaker 1: we will do podcasts each night of the draft to
- 46:26Speaker 1: update you on everybody that the Bengals select. They've got
- 46:29Speaker 1: an extra pick after trading Ryan Finley away, so it's
- 46:32Speaker 1: going to be a lot of fun. Lap. That was awesome.
- 46:34Speaker 1: Appreciate your time. There's a lot of fun to appreciate you.
- 46:38Speaker 1: I will post podcast to wrap up each night of
- 46:40Speaker 1: the draft that will be ready for your drive to
- 46:43Speaker 1: work the next morning. That's going to do it. For
