- 1:15Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 1:16Speaker 2: If I was uncomfortable saying that word before I recorded
- 1:18Speaker 2: this episode, to be honest, I am incapable of being
- 1:20Speaker 2: uncomfortable saying that word after recording this episode because we
- 1:25Speaker 2: say it a lot, and it's important that we say

- 4:16Speaker 2: Body and I just kind of alluded to this.
- 4:19Speaker 3: But there's a lot going on in the world right now,
- 4:21Speaker 3: and I know.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I can feel frustrating to feel as though you don't
- 4:25Speaker 2: know the right way to help or how you can
- 4:27Speaker 2: get involved, or where you should be getting your information from.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Like I get it, I feel the same way. I
- 4:33Speaker 2: would encourage you to continue on in your day to
- 4:36Speaker 2: day doing one thing that we can all do, which
- 4:39Speaker 2: is just being kind and compassionate to the people that
- 4:42Speaker 2: you come across, those that you're interacting with.
- 4:45Speaker 3: It can make a really big difference. And with that,
- 4:48Speaker 3: Oh man, here we.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Go, let's get to hurdling.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Today.
- 5:07Speaker 2: I am sitting down with doctor Jacqueline Walters.
- 5:10Speaker 3: She is an obg y N. How are you doing today?
- 5:14Speaker 1: I'm having a super day and it's Monday, So you know,
- 5:17Speaker 1: I make it a good day.
- 5:19Speaker 3: I make it a good day. You make a conscious
- 5:21Speaker 3: choice to have a good day.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I wake up every day and I set my thermostat
- 5:25Speaker 1: for a good day.
- 5:27Speaker 3: I love that.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I love that well, I said to you right before
- 5:30Speaker 2: we started recording. I'm going to say it again. I
- 5:33Speaker 2: know that this conversation is going to be a lot
- 5:35Speaker 2: more natural for you than it is for me, because
- 5:37Speaker 2: I don't actually say the word vagina.
- 5:39Speaker 1: A lot you don't say the word vagina. I say
- 5:42Speaker 1: the vagina.
- 5:43Speaker 3: All day, all day.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Now. The truth is, I get so many different words
- 5:50Speaker 1: for the vagina now that I know different cultures call
- 5:53Speaker 1: it different things. A lot of women will whisper the
- 5:57Speaker 1: word vagina because I'm like, I said, nobody tell you
- 5:59Speaker 1: for me, you and oh god, it's okay, and so
- 6:02Speaker 1: you're not by yourself. Most women don't like saying the
- 6:05Speaker 1: word vagina.
- 6:06Speaker 2: There's a lot of I feel like there's a couple
- 6:08Speaker 2: of other words that fall into this arena, including a
- 6:11Speaker 2: word that could be associated with the vagina, moist.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Oh yeah, they don't like saying that because you know,
- 6:17Speaker 1: I do ask and I'm like, are you getting moist?
- 6:19Speaker 1: And they look around the room and they like, uh yeah,
- 6:24Speaker 1: I said, it's okay, it's okay, we want it moist.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I said, I want it like your mouth, and you
- 6:29Speaker 1: know what, it feels like they have a dry mouth.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I want your vagina just like it and think about it.
- 6:33Speaker 1: The vagina looks like the mouth of nose lips. You know.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Well, we are here today to talk about feminine wellness.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Let's coin it that term. And before I start to
- 6:44Speaker 2: ask you the hard hitting questions, tell me a little
- 6:47Speaker 2: bit about yourself. Tell me about how you got into
- 6:50Speaker 2: this field of medicine.
- 6:52Speaker 1: So i am. I was known as doctor Jaqueline Watches.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I have somehow lost that name and I'm known as
- 6:58Speaker 1: doctor Jackie. Now I've been in obgyn for twenty five years.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I chose wellness, and the reason I chose a feel
- 7:07Speaker 1: where it was well woman health is I grew up
- 7:10Speaker 1: in a small town in Mississippi, and we didn't talk
- 7:12Speaker 1: about it. We didn't say the word vagina. Your mother
- 7:16Speaker 1: whispered about it. We badger shamed, like when you talked
- 7:20Speaker 1: about the vagina, it was something dirty or something nasty.
- 7:24Speaker 1: And I just kept thinking, one day, I'm going to
- 7:25Speaker 1: grow up and I am going to normalize the vagina.
- 7:29Speaker 1: I am going to make it where nobody is embarrassed
- 7:32Speaker 1: to talk about it. And that's where I really want
- 7:34Speaker 1: us as women to become it. Don't be embarrassed about it.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I've had enough to happen in my life. Now that
- 7:40Speaker 1: I have no shame, and so I try and educate, like,
- 7:44Speaker 1: your vagina's not making history. It has been done before.
- 7:48Speaker 1: If you go back to the Bible, there are things
- 7:50Speaker 1: in the Bible that they did to and with their vaginas.
- 7:53Speaker 1: So your vagina's not making history. You are not the
- 7:56Speaker 1: first person to have been cheated on. You're not the
- 7:59Speaker 1: first person having accident with your period. You're not the
- 8:02Speaker 1: first person to go, what's that smell going on down there?
- 8:05Speaker 1: You are not the first person. So I wanted to
- 8:09Speaker 1: do well women. So I went to college wanting to
- 8:13Speaker 1: become a doctor. I fell in love with this guy.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I could drink a gallon of his bath water. So
- 8:18Speaker 1: I decided I didn't want to be a doctor. I
- 8:20Speaker 1: would just do medical technology. And I got into medtech
- 8:24Speaker 1: and he dumped me, and so I wanted to go
- 8:27Speaker 1: back to medical school, but my mother's punishment was, you
- 8:30Speaker 1: have to complete this program and then you can go back.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Went there four years of residency, I moved to Atlanta,
- 8:36Speaker 1: where we did some of our training. I was at
- 8:38Speaker 1: Mercer and Macon, Georgia, and here I am and I
- 8:42Speaker 1: have been practicing obgyn since that time and loved every well.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Most of there are some days that is not always
- 8:50Speaker 1: a happy job because I have to give bad news.
- 8:52Speaker 1: But for the most part, I love what I do.
- 8:55Speaker 1: All my best friends have come through as patients and
- 8:57Speaker 1: I just fall in love with the patient and it's
- 9:00Speaker 1: my best friend.
- 9:01Speaker 3: I love it. I love it well.
- 9:02Speaker 2: It sounds like you're certainly in the right field for you,
- 9:06Speaker 2: and I'm sure the hurdlers, as I call my audience,
- 9:08Speaker 2: are grateful for you today, especially because you're going to
- 9:11Speaker 2: give them some of the intel that they really need. So,
- 9:14Speaker 2: like I said, we're talking about feminine wellness. Maintaining your
- 9:17Speaker 2: vaginal health and feminine wellness as a whole is an
- 9:20Speaker 2: important part of living an overall healthy lifestyle period end
- 9:24Speaker 2: of sentence. So are there certain things that we should
- 9:27Speaker 2: be keeping in mind when it comes to general feminine hygiene.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Well, one, Knowing the anatomy is important. You know, a
- 9:35Speaker 1: lot of women are very confused when I use the
- 9:39Speaker 1: proper terminology, So when I say clitterists, they mean you
- 9:42Speaker 1: mean you right here, Yes, So just get familiar with
- 9:46Speaker 1: your normal anatomy. Labia majora, labia manurea, the thinner inner
- 9:53Speaker 1: lips the glitteris is the clitteral hood the vagina, the paraneum,
- 9:58Speaker 1: and the in the rectum, and just knowing how to
- 10:01Speaker 1: have a conversation about it, and then knowing that the
- 10:04Speaker 1: vagina is actually cleaner than the mouth. A lot of
- 10:07Speaker 1: people look at the vagina as if it's nasty and
- 10:10Speaker 1: the mouth is fine. You have way more bacteria in
- 10:14Speaker 1: your mouth than you have in your vagina, and so
- 10:18Speaker 1: part of feminine health is to know that the vagina
- 10:21Speaker 1: is designed as a self cleaning of it. You don't
- 10:25Speaker 1: have to do a lot to it to make sure
- 10:27Speaker 1: that your vagina is healthy. The other parts is your
- 10:30Speaker 1: nutrition and your water intake is all as important to
- 10:35Speaker 1: it to vaginal health. And to know that there are
- 10:39Speaker 1: certain bacteria that should be in the vagina, I call
- 10:42Speaker 1: it the ecosystem is your defense of the vagina. It's
- 10:46Speaker 1: just to know that that is all a part of
- 10:48Speaker 1: normal being a normal female, and that it is not
- 10:52Speaker 1: supposed to smell like strawberries and roses, that it has
- 10:56Speaker 1: its own specific muskye, not musty, a musky odor that
- 11:01Speaker 1: comes along with a healthy vagina. A lot of women
- 11:04Speaker 1: want to scour the vagina out like it's a pot.
- 11:07Speaker 1: You know, I got a clean clean you don't you
- 11:10Speaker 1: allow it to clean itself and not to add a
- 11:13Speaker 1: whole lot of addatives to the vagina. And then you're
- 11:16Speaker 1: in there with you know, now, if you are doing
- 11:19Speaker 1: things to the vagina, putting things, people, places, and things
- 11:24Speaker 1: in the vagina, you may disrupt your normal ecosystem and
- 11:28Speaker 1: that's when we start to get into vaginitis.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Got it.
- 11:32Speaker 2: You mentioned hydration can impact vaginal health. Talk to me
- 11:35Speaker 2: a little bit about what hydration's role is in that regard.
- 11:39Speaker 1: So we're mostly water as people. It takes water for
- 11:43Speaker 1: everything in your body to work. Also, it cleanses the body.
- 11:48Speaker 1: I mean you're drinking water and you're you know, you're
- 11:51Speaker 1: turning over sails and that's all important. You need the
- 11:54Speaker 1: cells to be hydrated. And just like the dust is
- 11:58Speaker 1: skin cells, vaginal discharge is all epithelial cells that are
- 12:04Speaker 1: shedding along with the mucus. And then some women, what
- 12:08Speaker 1: you eat, you will smell it again in your vagina
- 12:11Speaker 1: because we have certain women who don't break down oils
- 12:15Speaker 1: and different aromas through the vagina. So drinking water will
- 12:18Speaker 1: help purify that, help dilute that out. So water, water, water, water.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Super interesting that you would smell that perhaps in an
- 12:26Speaker 2: odor as opposed to just I know, like for example,
- 12:29Speaker 2: I literally just had asparagus with my dinner, a great
- 12:32Speaker 2: example of a food that people are always like, Well,
- 12:35Speaker 2: you can smell that in your urine after you consume it.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Yes, and same for the vagina. You can smell some women,
- 12:41Speaker 1: you will smell onions. A lot of women can't bring
- 12:44Speaker 1: down the oils in fish and seafood, and they get
- 12:48Speaker 1: that seafood odor a day or two after having eaten
- 12:51Speaker 1: seafood and it tends to pass. So you are you know,
- 12:55Speaker 1: it is important to hydrate again. It just kind of
- 12:57Speaker 1: help move that smell alone.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Now, for a super active woman, oftentimes we hear about
- 13:05Speaker 2: that activity level can disrupt her regular cycle. Let's talk
- 13:11Speaker 2: a little bit about that and if there's a point
- 13:13Speaker 2: perhaps where someone should be especially concerned with that irregularity.
- 13:18Speaker 1: So it takes a certain amount of body fat for
- 13:22Speaker 1: those proper hormones. You need body fat, and when women
- 13:27Speaker 1: are super thin and they don't have body fat, it
- 13:31Speaker 1: disrupts the production of certain hormones, and so your hormones
- 13:34Speaker 1: are thrown off, hents your cycles thrown off because it's
- 13:37Speaker 1: important to have estrogen and progesterone, and your ovaries will
- 13:41Speaker 1: make the estrogen and pogestone, but you need that body fat.
- 13:45Speaker 1: And so when you're not getting when you don't have
- 13:47Speaker 1: that and those hormones are disrupted, hence your cycle's totally
- 13:51Speaker 1: thrown off as well. And in order to have a cycle,
- 13:55Speaker 1: you have to have estrogen to stimulate that endometrial, the
- 14:00Speaker 1: inside lining of the uterus, because it's really just sitting
- 14:02Speaker 1: there waiting on a baby, like come on, come on,
- 14:05Speaker 1: wait on you to get pregnant. And each month when
- 14:08Speaker 1: you're not getting pregnant, you shed that lining and start
- 14:11Speaker 1: all over again. But if your hormones are disrupted, you
- 14:14Speaker 1: don't have body fat, you may not be taking any
- 14:17Speaker 1: proper nutrition. Then you're not getting that enough indimutual lining
- 14:22Speaker 1: to even have a period.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Interesting, and so I mean, I'll bring a little personal
- 14:27Speaker 2: experience to the show. You are welcome everyone, But for me,
- 14:30Speaker 2: I have had irregular cycles for as long as I
- 14:33Speaker 2: can remember, sometimes getting something one month, sometimes not getting
- 14:38Speaker 2: something the next month. And every single time I've seen
- 14:41Speaker 2: many different physicians at this point they will reference, well,
- 14:45Speaker 2: it's probably a combination of the fact that you are
- 14:47Speaker 2: super active.
- 14:48Speaker 3: I'm probably running.
- 14:50Speaker 2: I would say maybe six days a week and whatever
- 14:53Speaker 2: birth control you're on, right, So I've been on the
- 14:55Speaker 2: pill for a very very long time now.
- 14:57Speaker 3: But no one seems to be phased.
- 14:59Speaker 2: So how do you know when you should maybe be
- 15:02Speaker 2: worried about this versus not so concerned about it.
- 15:05Speaker 1: So, on an average, a woman will have a twenty
- 15:09Speaker 1: eight day cycle, and what do I mean by that,
- 15:11Speaker 1: that's the beginning of this period to the beginning of
- 15:14Speaker 1: the next period, which will occur every twenty eight days.
- 15:16Speaker 1: And we'll correct, and I will correct a woman who
- 15:19Speaker 1: goes but I had a period twice in the month, Well, sure,
- 15:22Speaker 1: you had it on the first of the month, and
- 15:23Speaker 1: then you got it again on the twenty ninth. And
- 15:25Speaker 1: they're like, oh my god, they're very frazzle. And so
- 15:28Speaker 1: it's not necessarily about it happened in the same month,
- 15:31Speaker 1: it's how many days apart. So on an average, a
- 15:35Speaker 1: woman will have about a twenty one to thirty thirty
- 15:38Speaker 1: five day cycle, and as long as she is in
- 15:41Speaker 1: that range, and you will see your cycle change with
- 15:45Speaker 1: different phases in life. Like you said, I'm a runner,
- 15:48Speaker 1: I'm on birth control. Pills, and they really have redesigned
- 15:51Speaker 1: birth control pills now where a woman really doesn't get
- 15:54Speaker 1: much of a period at all. And if you are
- 15:57Speaker 1: irregular taking the birth control pill, getting back the estrogen
- 16:00Speaker 1: and progester on your knee is to your benefit because
- 16:04Speaker 1: bone health is important as well. But regular is about
- 16:08Speaker 1: twenty one to thirty five. And if you say every
- 16:12Speaker 1: twenty five days I get a period, then you're regular.
- 16:15Speaker 1: You know, it just happens to fall in the same
- 16:17Speaker 1: month sometimes because of the number of days in the month.
- 16:21Speaker 2: What would you say, perhaps other irregularities are that may
- 16:25Speaker 2: have a woman looking into scheduling a consultation or a
- 16:29Speaker 2: special visit.
- 16:31Speaker 1: So if there's a woman who has one who's late
- 16:34Speaker 1: starting her period, she's eighteen years old and she has
- 16:37Speaker 1: breast and she's never had a period, we do want
- 16:39Speaker 1: her to check in with us. But if there's a
- 16:41Speaker 1: woman who's had a period, started a period at thirteen,
- 16:45Speaker 1: and all of a sudden she stops having a period
- 16:47Speaker 1: and there's no explanation for no period, then we think
- 16:52Speaker 1: that person should come in because your thyroid function or
- 16:55Speaker 1: dysfunction could definitely throw your cycle off. A lot of
- 17:00Speaker 1: women were seeing now because we know more about it,
- 17:02Speaker 1: may have something called polycystical variant syndrome or metabolic syndrome
- 17:09Speaker 1: or insulin resistance, and those ladies are not secreting the
- 17:13Speaker 1: proper amount of estrogen and progesterone, the insulin levels high,
- 17:18Speaker 1: those women may not get periods for years. That's not
- 17:22Speaker 1: healthy because we want to make sure that endometrial lining
- 17:25Speaker 1: that we were talking about isn't very thick because a
- 17:29Speaker 1: thickened the lining that's not shedding every month could potentially
- 17:33Speaker 1: become what we call hyperplasia and could become malignant. So
- 17:37Speaker 1: if you're not getting if you once had normal periods
- 17:40Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden you stopped your period,
- 17:42Speaker 1: you should definitely have an evaluation. Or if your period
- 17:46Speaker 1: went from being a moderate flow for the first day
- 17:49Speaker 1: to a light flow and now all of a sudden,
- 17:52Speaker 1: you're just bleeding and non stop bleeding, we want you
- 17:54Speaker 1: to check in with us as well. But there may
- 17:57Speaker 1: be medical reasons that women are not having a period,
- 18:01Speaker 1: or oftentimes having them too much. Fibroids, individual polyps, anything
- 18:09Speaker 1: that could cause an a tropian or what's another word
- 18:13Speaker 1: for may cause your cervix to be a little abnormal.
- 18:15Speaker 1: We do want to make sure that you are safe.
- 18:19Speaker 2: It seems as though a lot of the things that
- 18:21Speaker 2: you are highlighting can also be points of conversation in
- 18:23Speaker 2: your annual visit, which would be why your annual especially
- 18:27Speaker 2: into your obgion is super important.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Absolutely, and that's I encourage women to almost journal their wellness.
- 18:35Speaker 1: You know, this is something to come and most of
- 18:37Speaker 1: the time you go. I come in and I'm like,
- 18:40Speaker 1: I'm a rooty to the twob doctor mental health. We've
- 18:42Speaker 1: been in a pandemic. How's it going? Because oddly enough,
- 18:46Speaker 1: if you're super stressed out, then you will also have
- 18:50Speaker 1: your hypothalamus thrown off. And when the hypothalamus is not
- 18:54Speaker 1: secreting certain hormones and the porturitary is thrown off, and
- 18:58Speaker 1: when the petary is thrown off, the ovaries won't do
- 19:00Speaker 1: what they need to do. So we do encourage mental
- 19:04Speaker 1: health as one of those things we want to talk about.
- 19:07Speaker 1: And then heart smart, you know, leading cause of death
- 19:09Speaker 1: and women now heart disease. So we do talk about
- 19:13Speaker 1: heart smart and obviously that's not what I'm there for,
- 19:16Speaker 1: but I'm there definitely to make a suggestion for a referral.
- 19:20Speaker 1: And then good health is important and then for me,
- 19:22Speaker 1: you know, I'm always like the June is everything, okay.
- 19:26Speaker 2: I also think that a lot of women like I
- 19:28Speaker 2: can certainly speak to this, although in recent years have
- 19:31Speaker 2: been much better with it. But there were years that
- 19:33Speaker 2: like my annual doctor's visit so to speak, was going
- 19:36Speaker 2: to see my obgyn, because that was one I knew
- 19:38Speaker 2: that I never wanted to skip. It was always really
- 19:41Speaker 2: important for me, especially considering some of my past health history.
- 19:44Speaker 3: So I can totally understand.
- 19:46Speaker 2: And I think it's really important that you know you're
- 19:49Speaker 2: starting to pulse check in some of these other areas
- 19:51Speaker 2: because it could bring up, as you mentioned, something that's
- 19:54Speaker 2: worth talking about with another physician, and it's really great
- 19:56Speaker 2: that that physician can then give you a referral to
- 19:59Speaker 2: someone else in their network.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Absolutely, and women are not as open and transparent because
- 20:06Speaker 1: they feel like I'm going to judge or somebody may
- 20:09Speaker 1: judge them, or they're embarrassed by what I do day
- 20:12Speaker 1: to day with my vagina. I don't want to share it,
- 20:15Speaker 1: but it is. You know, I tell women I'm the
- 20:16Speaker 1: Olivia Pope of the vagina. If you get into trouble,
- 20:20Speaker 1: I can get you out, So you really want to
- 20:24Speaker 1: have a relationship, which is important. Have a relationship with
- 20:28Speaker 1: your obgyn so that you can come in and they go, girl,
- 20:33Speaker 1: you know what I did, And I'm like, girl, we
- 20:36Speaker 1: need to check for this or check for that, or
- 20:38Speaker 1: you know, I'm smelling this or I feel that, and
- 20:41Speaker 1: then I give suggestions. You know, I talk about my
- 20:43Speaker 1: favorite things, and I have a whole list of some
- 20:47Speaker 1: of my favorite things for the vagina, and we'll definitely
- 20:50Speaker 1: talk about a few of those things. But that's why
- 20:52Speaker 1: I tell women have a relationship with an obgyn and
- 20:56Speaker 1: try not to shop around too much, because you never
- 21:00Speaker 1: really get to develop a relationship with your doctor.
- 21:02Speaker 2: I do think that that's a super important note, is
- 21:06Speaker 2: finding someone that truly makes you feel comfortable, because it
- 21:09Speaker 2: is again it's your body.
- 21:11Speaker 3: Holding back isn't going to do you any favors.
- 21:13Speaker 2: So finding someone similar to like searching around for the
- 21:16Speaker 2: right therapist, Like find someone and stick with them if
- 21:19Speaker 2: you feel really comfortable in that situation. I love what
- 21:22Speaker 2: you had to say about a list of my favorite
- 21:24Speaker 2: things for the vagina, which obviously means that I'm gonna
- 21:27Speaker 2: have to ask you what some of these are. Although
- 21:29Speaker 2: I do feel like I'm deviating from where I'm trying
- 21:31Speaker 2: to go with this, but I couldn't let that one slide.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Well, favorite things for the vagina one is I don't
- 21:36Speaker 1: use soap, you know, as men and women go what.
- 21:40Speaker 1: I don't believe in putting additives into the vagina. That's
- 21:43Speaker 1: going to throw off that normal pH that you should
- 21:46Speaker 1: have in the vagina. And I'm a big believer. And
- 21:49Speaker 1: if I can bring any names in, I'll bring you
- 21:51Speaker 1: refresh and refreshes a jail that I love, love, love,
- 21:54Speaker 1: and I do this doctor Jackie's favorite things gifts for
- 21:58Speaker 1: my friends and in that is always refresh. I'm like, okay,
- 22:02Speaker 1: you need refresh because you want to refresh her but
- 22:07Speaker 1: also stabilize the pH and the vagina. So that's one
- 22:11Speaker 1: of my favst. Probiotics, love love love probiotics. And I
- 22:15Speaker 1: have to distinguish between gut health and vaginal health because
- 22:18Speaker 1: there are a little bit of differences between the two.
- 22:21Speaker 1: But I do talk about probiotics for gut health and
- 22:24Speaker 1: vaginal health. You know, I don't like women using towels
- 22:31Speaker 1: over and over and again, so I'm like, just use
- 22:33Speaker 1: your hand to slush out the vagina. So I do
- 22:36Speaker 1: those things, and then just some of the other girl
- 22:39Speaker 1: things I like having in my life is you know,
- 22:42Speaker 1: certain cologns. So I give all those things out to
- 22:45Speaker 1: my friends that I have come to like. You know
- 22:47Speaker 1: that Oprah's Favorite Things.
- 22:49Speaker 3: I love, Doctor Jackie's favorite things.
- 22:51Speaker 1: I have a doctor Jackie favor Yes, for my brides,
- 22:55Speaker 1: doctor Jackie's favorite things for women who have breast cancer.
- 22:58Speaker 1: But I do the same thing with especially my teens
- 23:01Speaker 1: going away to college, you know, even poopery. You know,
- 23:05Speaker 1: like if you got a new girl in the dorm,
- 23:07Speaker 1: you don't want to get bad, you know, use some
- 23:09Speaker 1: of this. So I just give them a gift bag
- 23:12Speaker 1: of these favorite things that I love.
- 23:14Speaker 3: You mentioned probiotics.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Now, is there a difference between a probiotic or a
- 23:19Speaker 2: probiotic that could be in a daily supplement that I
- 23:22Speaker 2: take versus something that may be specifically for my feminine health.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Yeah, the vaginal probiotics will give you back that good
- 23:29Speaker 1: lacto bascillas that you have. Some of the gut probiotics
- 23:33Speaker 1: may not necessarily provide the actual bacteria you need for
- 23:37Speaker 1: the vagina target specific again, you know, I love I'm
- 23:42Speaker 1: a refreshed girl. They have pro b as one of theirs,
- 23:46Speaker 1: and I'm certainly. And then supplements, you know, I do
- 23:49Speaker 1: tell women, so we're going from probiotics to make sure
- 23:52Speaker 1: you're taking the right supplements. We're in a pandemic, you know,
- 23:56Speaker 1: DC and zinc will be your friend.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Something we haven't specifically talked about yet, although I do
- 24:01Speaker 2: believe you mentioned the D word discharge. Everyone I know
- 24:06Speaker 2: is very different, can have different amounts consistencies.
- 24:10Speaker 3: This is so awkward to talk about, but we're going
- 24:14Speaker 3: to talk about it.
- 24:15Speaker 2: So for someone who is active, is there a certain amount,
- 24:20Speaker 2: so to speak, that would be normal versus a certain
- 24:23Speaker 2: amount that should be something that you should perhaps reach
- 24:26Speaker 2: out to an obgian about. And for someone who may
- 24:29Speaker 2: be getting a heavier amount of discharge, what would you
- 24:32Speaker 2: recommend for them to navigate that on the day to day.
- 24:37Speaker 1: So we normalize vaginal discharge by one mentioning around the
- 24:40Speaker 1: time of ovulation, should you not take birth control, peels, rings, patches,
- 24:45Speaker 1: or anything that would stop ovulation, you may notice a
- 24:49Speaker 1: bit more of an egg consistency where it just kind
- 24:54Speaker 1: of comes out of the vaginant, you know, if you
- 24:56Speaker 1: pull it. And that's important to us, that whole string
- 25:00Speaker 1: effect during that time, you may notice more watery discharge. Now,
- 25:05Speaker 1: if you're having a copious amount of discharge where you
- 25:08Speaker 1: stand up and you're just pouring discharge, especially if it
- 25:11Speaker 1: has an odor and it has a color to it. Now,
- 25:15Speaker 1: I do believe in the mirror. I mean when I
- 25:18Speaker 1: wrote the Queen Bee, I'm like, get your mirror out
- 25:21Speaker 1: and look at it. You know, if you feel like
- 25:23Speaker 1: something's not right, please put your eyes on it. Because
- 25:26Speaker 1: you can't necessarily use your underwear as the color test
- 25:30Speaker 1: because by the time you go throughout the day and
- 25:33Speaker 1: the oil and the dirt from the skin on the
- 25:36Speaker 1: labia has changed the color of the underwear or drying
- 25:40Speaker 1: effect has changed the color. So I tell women, if
- 25:42Speaker 1: there's an odor, if there's irritational itching, if it's copious
- 25:47Speaker 1: amounts where it is kind of just running out of
- 25:49Speaker 1: the vagina, that may not be normal. But you are
- 25:52Speaker 1: right when you said earlier. Every woman's a little different.
- 25:56Speaker 1: I'm a big panty lineerware you know, I'm sharing am
- 26:00Speaker 1: but I like wearing panty liners because I'm really about
- 26:03Speaker 1: staying drunk. That's important too. So if you're walking around
- 26:08Speaker 1: throughout the day and you're just wet all day, then
- 26:11Speaker 1: you're setting yourself up for things like yeast infection. So
- 26:15Speaker 1: you want to make sure that you're you know, you're dry,
- 26:18Speaker 1: and that's a catch twenty two. We don't want the
- 26:21Speaker 1: actual vagina dry, but we want to feel dry throughout
- 26:25Speaker 1: the day. And it's like wearing your gym clothes all day.
- 26:28Speaker 1: You don't want to do that or walking around in
- 26:31Speaker 1: a bathing suit that's wet all day. Same thing with underwear. Well,
- 26:35Speaker 1: if you feel like you're wet all day, then you
- 26:37Speaker 1: may want to consider a panty liner.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Taking a break from today's episode to talk to you
- 26:47Speaker 2: about my sponsor at Gooder. Gooder makes the best active
- 26:54Speaker 2: sunglasses there. I said it, it's a bold statement, but
- 26:57Speaker 2: I have been swearing by my Gooder sunglasses for over
- 27:03Speaker 2: a year now and I cannot remember what.
- 27:05Speaker 3: My life was like without them.
- 27:08Speaker 2: They I love how they are stylish and functional and
- 27:11Speaker 2: I never ever have to worry about them falling or slipping,
- 27:16Speaker 2: whether I am on a bike ride heading who knows where,
- 27:20Speaker 2: or tackling five by twelve hundred meters repeats around the
- 27:23Speaker 2: track with my friends at Brooklyn Track Club. They have
- 27:26Speaker 2: so many different looks, styles, colors, shapes, you name it,
- 27:31Speaker 2: something for every single taste. Of course, they've got an
- 27:35Speaker 2: awesome deal for hurdle listeners. It's fifteen percent off at
- 27:38Speaker 2: checkout using the code Hurdle one five. Head on over
- 27:42Speaker 2: to Gooder dot com. That's goodr dot com slash hurdle
- 27:48Speaker 2: and use code hurdle one five to get fifteen percent
- 27:52Speaker 2: off today. Now one note this code, it's only good
- 27:56Speaker 2: for the first two hundred people. So if you've been
- 27:58Speaker 2: on the fence about snaging yourself some sunglasses, now is
- 28:02Speaker 2: the time.
- 28:03Speaker 3: Good Or dot com slash hurdle.
- 28:12Speaker 2: You mentioned something that I'm sure a lot of listeners
- 28:14Speaker 2: want to know a little bit about, which would be
- 28:16Speaker 2: wearing your gym clothes around for too long, even if
- 28:19Speaker 2: you're perhaps not doing it too long in one period,
- 28:21Speaker 2: but you're constantly changing in and out of gym clothes,
- 28:24Speaker 2: You're constantly running around.
- 28:26Speaker 3: What's the concern with that?
- 28:28Speaker 1: So yeast love hot, warm, wet spaces, and so if
- 28:34Speaker 1: you're walking around with your you know you're perspiring and
- 28:38Speaker 1: the heat is being contained in that area and you're
- 28:41Speaker 1: not changing, you're just setting yourself up for a yeast infection.
- 28:46Speaker 1: And so it is definitely if you have worked out
- 28:49Speaker 1: and you especially if you're doing a commando style, you
- 28:52Speaker 1: really need to get out of those wet, warm, soggy
- 28:56Speaker 1: pants because yeast are like, this is the right environment,
- 29:02Speaker 1: and if we want to avoid vaginitis of any sort,
- 29:05Speaker 1: you want to make sure you're changing those underpants.
- 29:10Speaker 2: I know that, you know so many times I have
- 29:13Speaker 2: in the past. If I've experienced something like a yeast infection,
- 29:16Speaker 2: everyone gives you like instant, like unsolicited advice. If you
- 29:20Speaker 2: mention it to a friend, it's like, oh, well, you
- 29:22Speaker 2: should be eating X or doing wire YadA YadA, yadad
- 29:25Speaker 2: to make it past as fast as possible. Any quick
- 29:28Speaker 2: tips for someone who may be navigating this issue and
- 29:31Speaker 2: would love to as we all would make.
- 29:33Speaker 3: It just go away asap.
- 29:35Speaker 1: So what you mentioned, and I tease the patience, that's
- 29:39Speaker 1: advice from the street committee. You know, we all have
- 29:42Speaker 1: a whole committee of women in our lives that are
- 29:44Speaker 1: telling us what to do. Especially to the woman who
- 29:46Speaker 1: has recurrent vaginitis one. She wants to just kind of
- 29:51Speaker 1: probe life and see what she may be doing that's
- 29:53Speaker 1: setting her up. That goes back to medical conditions as well.
- 29:57Speaker 1: If you know, make sure she's not a diabetic or
- 30:00Speaker 1: maybe pcos where they're doing, you know, a little heavier
- 30:05Speaker 1: and they're doing a lot of sweating there, but a probiotic.
- 30:08Speaker 1: I go back to that, you want to keep that
- 30:10Speaker 1: ecosystem in check so that you are not having an
- 30:14Speaker 1: overgrowth of yeast or back to your vaginosis, and your
- 30:19Speaker 1: diet is super important. What are you eating? Are you
- 30:21Speaker 1: eating up? You know, you're doing gummies all day, You're
- 30:24Speaker 1: drinking sugary drinks all day, so you want to make
- 30:27Speaker 1: sure your diet is important. We talked about water. Water
- 30:31Speaker 1: is the best thing you could flood your body with
- 30:33Speaker 1: every day, but getting out of those wet underwear, and
- 30:38Speaker 1: then around your period is to try and make sure
- 30:41Speaker 1: you're not wearing tampons all day all the time. So
- 30:45Speaker 1: hygiene is important and that around your period as well.
- 30:49Speaker 1: I go back to my friend refreshed because I'm going
- 30:51Speaker 1: to say that over and over because that is one
- 30:53Speaker 1: of my favorite things which will help stabilize the pH.
- 30:56Speaker 1: So if you can keep your pH in that acidic
- 30:59Speaker 1: range that is should be and it will not allow
- 31:02Speaker 1: yeast and bacteria agnosis to overtake you.
- 31:05Speaker 2: And I know something that can contribute to perhaps a
- 31:09Speaker 2: weird word I'm going to throw into the mix here,
- 31:11Speaker 2: the climate down there could be what choice of underwear
- 31:16Speaker 2: you lean into, especially for activities.
- 31:18Speaker 3: So what advice do you have when it comes to that.
- 31:21Speaker 1: So I'm a big believer in cotton underwear, or at
- 31:24Speaker 1: least cotton lined underwear. And I love thongs, I mean,
- 31:29Speaker 1: but I try to buy the ones where it's not
- 31:31Speaker 1: just this stream. And the reason I've done that is
- 31:34Speaker 1: you're rubbing from the back to the front to the back,
- 31:36Speaker 1: and those two environments should not be connectored, you know,
- 31:40Speaker 1: and we'll throw out you know, what goes on in
- 31:43Speaker 1: Vegas should stay in Vegas. So even with intercourse and
- 31:46Speaker 1: that type of activity is you want to make sure
- 31:50Speaker 1: you're not dragging from the back to the front. So
- 31:53Speaker 1: cotton lined underwear, breathable cotton lined underwear will be important.
- 31:58Speaker 2: I'm like looking right now to see literally, like what
- 32:02Speaker 2: fabric it doesn't say, oh light gra like gra four
- 32:05Speaker 2: way stretch, breathable, breatheable, cotton guss it Okay, So you
- 32:08Speaker 2: know what I think it is. I do think that
- 32:10Speaker 2: a lot of like quote unquote athletic underwear they have
- 32:14Speaker 2: cotton in it, but it just feels a little different
- 32:16Speaker 2: obviously than like right now, I'm probably wearing like a
- 32:19Speaker 2: mostly cotton dress. But like my cotton dress feels very
- 32:21Speaker 2: different than my active underwear. It's just a different combination
- 32:25Speaker 2: of fabrics, I would say.
- 32:27Speaker 1: And you also have since we're talking about underwear. For
- 32:29Speaker 1: the woman who has just recurrent vaginitis, sometimes we even
- 32:33Speaker 1: tell them come out of the colored underwear. I try
- 32:36Speaker 1: to find something that doesn't have a lot of dye
- 32:39Speaker 1: in it and see if that doesn't help at all.
- 32:43Speaker 1: But I can always say to women, diet is extremely important.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Nutrition and nutrition is important. Probiotics and what are you
- 32:51Speaker 1: doing to your vagina? Now, we're gonna get a little risky.
- 32:55Speaker 1: If you are having multiple partners, you are, I'm definitely
- 33:02Speaker 1: more likely to have a disruption of the pH and
- 33:06Speaker 1: your vagina because you're mixing different floras. You know, one
- 33:10Speaker 1: guy has this girl, and then he goes to this girl,
- 33:12Speaker 1: and so he's creating this whole combustion of flora that
- 33:17Speaker 1: they're putting in place. So women who find themselves with
- 33:20Speaker 1: recurrent imagine itis will have to also wonder what type
- 33:24Speaker 1: activities they're participating in.
- 33:27Speaker 2: And something that we haven't touched on yet, and the
- 33:29Speaker 2: last thing that we're going to touch on today together.
- 33:32Speaker 2: We haven't necessarily talked about the girls up top. We
- 33:34Speaker 2: haven't talked about anything when it comes to breast health.
- 33:36Speaker 2: So two questions. One something that I know the woman
- 33:40Speaker 2: listening to this are probably curious about if they have
- 33:43Speaker 2: not yet started to do annual mammograms. But they of course,
- 33:48Speaker 2: at any age you're going to be when you go
- 33:50Speaker 2: in for your annual obgian appointment, you're going to be
- 33:53Speaker 2: doing regular breast exams. But if you haven't started getting
- 33:55Speaker 2: mammograms yet, is there any guidelines that you can provide
- 33:58Speaker 2: about when someone should really consider incorporating that into their
- 34:02Speaker 2: annual routines, so to speak.
- 34:04Speaker 1: So this one, yes, I can answer the question because
- 34:07Speaker 1: I'm a two time breast cancer survivor. So let me
- 34:10Speaker 1: shout out to women it's an early detection is your
- 34:12Speaker 1: best protection. It's to say that if you talk about
- 34:17Speaker 1: the American College of Obigy, in which governs obgyns, or
- 34:22Speaker 1: I believe the American Cancer Society, we do recommend a
- 34:26Speaker 1: mammogram starting at age forty. Now let me qualify if
- 34:29Speaker 1: you have had a first degree relative with breast cancer,
- 34:33Speaker 1: your mother or your sister, or your brother or your father,
- 34:38Speaker 1: then you should get your mammogram ten years before that
- 34:41Speaker 1: relative was actually diagnosed with it. If they you're not
- 34:44Speaker 1: sure about the age, I will say thirty. You know,
- 34:47Speaker 1: get your first mammogram at age thirty. Now, though, we
- 34:51Speaker 1: can do genetic testing, and so if a woman presents
- 34:54Speaker 1: and her mom or her sister, or her dad or
- 34:56Speaker 1: brother had breast cancer, we can certainly screen them to
- 35:00Speaker 1: if they have any genetic predisposition to developing breast cancer.
- 35:04Speaker 1: But if you just came in my office and you're
- 35:06Speaker 1: a woman who's forty years or older, we do recommend
- 35:09Speaker 1: annual mammogram screenings to up up to about the age
- 35:14Speaker 1: of sixty five. And I even tell a sixty five
- 35:16Speaker 1: year old woman, your life isn't over, and this is
- 35:18Speaker 1: something you want to do. You know, we can do
- 35:20Speaker 1: it to sixty eight, we can do it to seventeen.
- 35:23Speaker 1: But you do need an annual mammogram. You need to
- 35:25Speaker 1: do self breast exams every month, and a good time
- 35:29Speaker 1: to do it is the week after your period, when
- 35:31Speaker 1: all those hormonal changes have gone away. Checking your breast
- 35:35Speaker 1: in the tuble shower when your hands are soapy and wet,
- 35:38Speaker 1: and multiple positions, you know, standing lying flat, you know,
- 35:42Speaker 1: check your left with your right and you're right with
- 35:44Speaker 1: your left because there are very few nerve endings on
- 35:47Speaker 1: this side of the hand, and you want to do
- 35:49Speaker 1: it more on this portion of the hand. And then
- 35:52Speaker 1: taking vitamin D three has also been found to decrease
- 35:56Speaker 1: the risk of breast cancer, so we're encouraging that as well.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Wow, some really really great advice here. Thank you so
- 36:03Speaker 2: much for for sharing bress.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Health is super important. Like I started, early, detection is
- 36:08Speaker 1: your best protection. And if we're dying more, we should
- 36:11Speaker 1: be doing more.
- 36:12Speaker 3: Yes, we should be doing more.
- 36:14Speaker 2: The last thing that I want to ask you about again,
- 36:16Speaker 2: when it comes to that active woman or honestly just
- 36:19Speaker 2: any woman, I'm a fan of going without a bra,
- 36:22Speaker 2: but obviously that's not an option when it comes to
- 36:24Speaker 2: sport anything that we should be taking into consideration when
- 36:27Speaker 2: it comes to appropriate sports bra or fit for taking
- 36:32Speaker 2: care of our girls when we're getting active.
- 36:34Speaker 1: And I will be honest, I'm not a big fan
- 36:37Speaker 1: of underwire and why is it. I do believe that
- 36:39Speaker 1: the underwire just kind of moves around and creates a
- 36:42Speaker 1: calloused area underneath, which is always very confusing for the
- 36:46Speaker 1: woman who's checking her breast. But it's stick in that
- 36:49Speaker 1: area because it's responding to that wire constantly rubbing. So
- 36:53Speaker 1: if you could find a good supporting broad it's comfortable
- 36:57Speaker 1: to the back and hold the girls up and in place,
- 37:00Speaker 1: that's important. But I do tell women take your bronze
- 37:02Speaker 1: off when your home. You know, if you can just
- 37:06Speaker 1: allow the lymphatic drainage to take place, just be free
- 37:10Speaker 1: and not to wear a bra. You know, girls will
- 37:13Speaker 1: try and sleep in bros and my mother never allowed it.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Now she never gave me a reason why, but she
- 37:18Speaker 1: just told us never to sleep in a bra. But
- 37:20Speaker 1: there is something to just let those breasts go free
- 37:23Speaker 1: and let the lymphatic drainage do what it needs to do,
- 37:27Speaker 1: and then just make sure you know your breast like
- 37:29Speaker 1: you know your way home. You can tell that this
- 37:32Speaker 1: is always very thick in this area. If there is
- 37:36Speaker 1: a mask, you want to report that to your doctor.
- 37:38Speaker 1: If you have any nipple drainage, especially if it's bloody
- 37:42Speaker 1: or green, you want to talk to the doctor. If
- 37:44Speaker 1: you feel any unusual feelings in the accillary underneath the arms.
- 37:48Speaker 1: You want to report that to your doctor. So anything
- 37:51Speaker 1: that you suspect isntcorrect. But women who have fiber cistic breasts,
- 37:55Speaker 1: the lumpy, bumpy breast, will kind of get to know
- 37:58Speaker 1: their breast. They know that around their periods. It's kind
- 38:01Speaker 1: of thicker, more tender. That's when I say know your
- 38:05Speaker 1: breast like you know your way home.
- 38:08Speaker 2: For any women who are perhaps having issues with leaking
- 38:14Speaker 2: or incontinents, especially when it comes to activity, is there
- 38:18Speaker 2: anything that they can do on their own perhaps before
- 38:22Speaker 2: seeking alternative means or you know some of the things
- 38:25Speaker 2: that we've heard about these days, vaginal rejuvenation.
- 38:29Speaker 3: What can they do on their own before they get
- 38:31Speaker 3: to that step.
- 38:32Speaker 1: So, if you have any stress inconnents, which let me
- 38:35Speaker 1: just tell you, because I have matured, you don't call
- 38:37Speaker 1: it aging anymore. We're maturing, you will definitely encounter some
- 38:42Speaker 1: stress incontinence. And when we say stress incontinents is if
- 38:45Speaker 1: you cough or sneeze or jump, you may feel a
- 38:48Speaker 1: little bit of a squirt or all out leak. For
- 38:50Speaker 1: those women who may have some stress inconnents, I'm a
- 38:53Speaker 1: big believer in doing keg golds, and they make all
- 38:57Speaker 1: types of Cagle Sizers now make weighted cones. They make
- 39:02Speaker 1: these little contractions where you can work your pelvic muscle,
- 39:05Speaker 1: pelvic floor muscles to try to type. It's like doing weights.
- 39:08Speaker 1: You know how we tone up the biceps. Just google
- 39:12Speaker 1: it you'll find all types. So definitely do that, and
- 39:15Speaker 1: then make sure you go to the bathroom. You know,
- 39:16Speaker 1: as women, we do everything for everybody else and we'll
- 39:20Speaker 1: wait till the last minute to go to the bathroom,
- 39:22Speaker 1: So you're kind of putting a strain in that area.
- 39:24Speaker 1: And then be careful with what you're drinking. Caffeine and
- 39:28Speaker 1: those sugary drinks will sometimes make us go to the bathroom.
- 39:31Speaker 1: But there are things you can do now. Pelvic floor
- 39:34Speaker 1: physical therapy is really big and popular now and there
- 39:37Speaker 1: are some wonderful physical therapists out there who can teach
- 39:40Speaker 1: you how to exercise those muscles and show you what
- 39:43Speaker 1: you need to do. I do believe I have this
- 39:46Speaker 1: injection that I do. But you may have heard of
- 39:49Speaker 1: the old shot, and I call it the Wow shot
- 39:53Speaker 1: because by default, when you do an old shot, it
- 39:58Speaker 1: definitely makes the or gasing tissue more sensitive, but it
- 40:02Speaker 1: also helps with stress and continents. It increases collagen production,
- 40:07Speaker 1: and that you're the neck around the bladderneck, the ring
- 40:11Speaker 1: around the bladder neck, the sphincter is stronger. And I
- 40:15Speaker 1: personally would tell women after an old shot. I had
- 40:19Speaker 1: no inconments. It was like, Okay, this is a good thing,
- 40:22Speaker 1: so a good thing.
- 40:23Speaker 2: And it felt good. Apparently, I think it's I think
- 40:26Speaker 2: it's interesting. Uh, I didn't know that they made like
- 40:30Speaker 2: tools that or like, I mean, it sounds like it
- 40:33Speaker 2: sounds like, I don't know, picking up a dumbbell or
- 40:35Speaker 2: using a foam roller, like and that's.
- 40:37Speaker 1: Exactly that's exactly what it looks like. Wait and let
- 40:40Speaker 1: me let me warn your listeners. You think, oh, I'm
- 40:42Speaker 1: gonna put this little light cone in my vagina, girl,
- 40:45Speaker 1: it will fall right out if you don't have strong
- 40:48Speaker 1: enough muscles to hold it. And some people even use
- 40:51Speaker 1: them for fun because if you move them in and
- 40:54Speaker 1: out of the vagina, you're gonna hit those zorogynous tissues.
- 40:57Speaker 1: But yes, look for weighted cones or they call them
- 41:00Speaker 1: cagle sizors like exercise.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Amazing, amazing, Thank you so much for all this intel.
- 41:07Speaker 3: I know I certainly learned a lot.
- 41:09Speaker 2: I think there's probably we could probably keep talking for
- 41:11Speaker 2: quite some time here. Is there anything else that we
- 41:14Speaker 2: haven't touched on that you think is really important to
- 41:16Speaker 2: kind of bring some awareness to before I let you
- 41:18Speaker 2: go today.
- 41:19Speaker 1: I want women to be free, and the reason I
- 41:21Speaker 1: wrote my book The Queen Bee is to allow a
- 41:24Speaker 1: certain amount of freedom around the vagina, like normalize saying
- 41:28Speaker 1: the word vagina, talking about you vagina, and getting a
- 41:32Speaker 1: mirror and looking at your vagina so that you know
- 41:34Speaker 1: that the queen is okay.
- 41:37Speaker 2: The queen is oh okay. Doctor Jackie, thanks so much
- 41:40Speaker 2: for your time today. How do the hurdlers follow along
- 41:42Speaker 2: with you? How do they keep up with you? Give
