Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Mastery of Vital Impulses Requires Change of Focus and Management of the Energy Flow

- 0:00It is obvious if a system is set up to carry out vital demands,
- 0:06desires and wants, and it is provided more energy, it will
- 0:11simply expand its ability to achieve those desires.
- 0:16That is the reason that undertaking practices that
- 0:19increase the vital force without first ensuring that the focus
- 0:24and direction has been changed actually increases lust, greed,
- 0:29pride, ambition and other forms of desire.
- 0:35Many practices including the use of various regimens of fasting,
- 0:41breathing techniques, pranayam, specific Hata yoga postures,
- 0:46certain mantras or chanting, various sports conditioning
- 0:50routines and the implementation of bandas, energetic locks
- 0:55within the physical body to concentrate and control the flow
- 0:59of energy can vastly increase the physical strength and the
- 1:04overall vitality. They have their benefits.
- 1:08The dramatic increase in the practice of Hata Yoga in the
- 1:12West shows that people experience and notice benefits
- 1:16to their physical health and well-being.
- 1:20It is interesting to note that in the West, the practices of
- 1:23Hatha yoga are primarily considered to be healthy
- 1:26exercise routines. There is nothing inherently
- 1:30spiritual about these practices if they are not turned towards
- 1:35spiritual realization in the 1st place.
- 1:40As a result, in the context of gaining control and mastery over
- 1:44the vital impulses, whether the sexual impulse or any other
- 1:49vital action of the external being, the result does not come
- 1:53through increasing the intensity or force operating at these
- 1:57levels. Rather, a change in the focus
- 2:00and direction of the energy is needed so that the increased
- 2:04force is applied to the spiritual objective.
- 2:09Additionally, the practitioner should take care to build up the
- 2:12ability to hold and not spill the energy that comes into the
- 2:17system. This is done through the
- 2:20cultivation of calm, peace and equality.
- 2:25Shifting the focus to the inner being and having it direct the
- 2:29use of the energy, rejecting the pressures of the external nature
- 2:34and holding the enhanced energy effectively represent the
- 2:38primary directions for mastery of the vital nature, Sriorobindo
- 2:44writes. Quote Pranayam and other
- 2:48physical practices like asana do not necessarily root out sexual
- 2:53desire. Sometimes, by increasing
- 2:56enormously the vital force in the body, they can even
- 2:59exaggerate in a rather startling way the force too of the sexual
- 3:04tendency, which, being at the base of the physical life, is
- 3:09always difficult to conquer. The one thing to do is to
- 3:13separate oneself from these movements, to find one's inner
- 3:17self and live in it. These movements will not then
- 3:20any longer appear as belonging to oneself, but a surface
- 3:26impositions of the outer procrity upon the inner self or
- 3:30Purusha. They can then be more easily
- 3:33discarded or brought to nothing. End Quote.
