- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, welcome back, great audience with US iHeart Music
- 0:05Speaker 1: Lounge Headquarters, Yukon Sports Network, Dan Hurley with US Tuesday
- 0:09Speaker 1: Night Final tune.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Up for the Huskies, they get a preseason game with
- 0:13Speaker 2: Michigan State. I used to be secret stuff, right, secret scrimmages.
- 0:17Speaker 2: We'd always have to say what happened, coach, and you
- 0:19Speaker 2: wouldn't say anything. Now it's right in front of people.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Do you like it better?
- 0:25Speaker 3: I think it's more beneficial. It's just the downside of it,
- 0:28Speaker 3: is you just, especially with some of these people in here,
- 0:31Speaker 3: some of these crazies in here, these crazy fans, is
- 0:34Speaker 3: we're just you're setting off alarms sooner, you know, like
- 0:39Speaker 3: where there were fan bases, maybe even before Opening Night.
- 0:43Speaker 3: You may see your team and exhibitions and be like,
- 0:46Speaker 3: all right, we're going to suck this year, you know?
- 0:49Speaker 3: Or are this player scaring me? And now you're just
- 0:51Speaker 3: creating hysteria before you want it. But the exercises themselves,
- 0:57Speaker 3: are they get Opening Night jitters added away? You know,
- 1:02Speaker 3: you find out a lot about your team, especially when
- 1:04Speaker 3: you're playing you know BC, who's an acc team. Now
- 1:07Speaker 3: you get a chance to play Michigan State, you figure
- 1:10Speaker 3: out your vulnerabilities way before.
- 1:12Speaker 2: MAUI right, we didn't get the solo ball yet. But
- 1:16Speaker 2: let's get to him. Third year, lefty sharp shooter over
- 1:20Speaker 2: forty percent last year. Defensively, you got to improve. What
- 1:25Speaker 2: do you do with a guy when you're trying to
- 1:26Speaker 2: get him to improve defensively. It's not something like shoot
- 1:30Speaker 2: a thousand shots, you'll get better at that. It's not
- 1:33Speaker 2: the same.
- 1:34Speaker 3: I think we're just trying to get him to play
- 1:37Speaker 3: to his athletic ability. You know, he's his evolution coming
- 1:41Speaker 3: in here to the shooter he is. I mean, he
- 1:43Speaker 3: may be the best returning shooter in college basketball. I
- 1:46Speaker 3: mean his volume and his efficiency as a shooter, and
- 1:50Speaker 3: the fact that a lot of its movement not quite
- 1:52Speaker 3: Jordan Hawkins, but there's a lot of movement to it
- 1:55Speaker 3: like that. So, but he's a freak athlete. He's got
- 1:58Speaker 3: crazy length and athleticism and upper body strength. I just
- 2:04Speaker 3: think we're right now, it's trying to get him. He's
- 2:07Speaker 3: identifying like too much as shooter score and like the
- 2:11Speaker 3: guy is a freak, Like he should be in passing lanes,
- 2:14Speaker 3: stealing the ball, win milling it, you know, not just
- 2:18Speaker 3: using screens to shoot threes, but using screens for lob dunks,
- 2:21Speaker 3: like they're just trying to get him to play more athletic,
- 2:25Speaker 3: you know. And then like like Cam Spencer, he was
- 2:27Speaker 3: not a great on ball defender, you know while he
- 2:30Speaker 3: was at Ukon, but he obviously was incredible on offense
- 2:33Speaker 3: in every way. And then he also he stole the
- 2:36Speaker 3: ball though sometimes, so like we just need solo. He's
- 2:39Speaker 3: gonna make some mistakes on defense, but go getting a
- 2:41Speaker 3: passing lane and like erase a mistake you just made
- 2:45Speaker 3: technically by using your athletic ability making more plays.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Does he have to get to the basket more? I
- 2:52Speaker 2: mean yeah, I mean obviously he's a good free throw shooter.
- 2:55Speaker 3: We'll get above, like stop broad jumping and high jump
- 3:00Speaker 3: and use your forty five inch vertical, which he says
- 3:03Speaker 3: he has on his Twitter page that Luke mocked him
- 3:08Speaker 3: for ye in a team meeting.
- 3:12Speaker 2: He brought it up practice. Obviously, college coaches, you were
- 3:18Speaker 2: thinking about going to the Lakers where they don't practice,
- 3:21Speaker 2: by the way, but college you can work on stuff.
- 3:23Speaker 2: So you walk into a practice, I've seen you, you got
- 3:27Speaker 2: your notes, you got things you want to do. How
- 3:29Speaker 2: do you approach it? I mean, do you say to yourself,
- 3:31Speaker 2: we're going to do this today and we're going to
- 3:33Speaker 2: make better at that today, or do you just go
- 3:35Speaker 2: through your list of things to do and then at
- 3:37Speaker 2: the end go, wow, we sucked or we're good today.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean you're trying to develop habits, you know,
- 3:43Speaker 3: like hard habits, habits that aren't fun. You know, like
- 3:47Speaker 3: closing out with technique on the perimeter to a three
- 3:50Speaker 3: point shooter that could also drive the ball. It's the
- 3:53Speaker 3: hardest thing to do in basketball, so like it's almost
- 3:55Speaker 3: like being a cornerback corner in the NFL receivers right,
- 4:01Speaker 3: like close out to a guy who's got a live
- 4:03Speaker 3: dribble who could shoot. So like habits like that, or
- 4:07Speaker 3: blockout technique, or you're getting over a screen, Like a
- 4:10Speaker 3: lot of what your practice is this time of year
- 4:13Speaker 3: is building those habits so that they're embedded and now
- 4:17Speaker 3: you start fine tuning execution, or try to simulate multiple
- 4:22Speaker 3: defenses that you'll play against, or do drills in practice
- 4:26Speaker 3: to make your team tougher, or make sure that they're
- 4:30Speaker 3: getting enough skill work so that when you're executing or
- 4:34Speaker 3: plays breakdown that they can go in and win one
- 4:37Speaker 3: on one battles so and then eventually as we get
- 4:41Speaker 3: closer to preparing for opponents, now you've got game plan.
- 4:45Speaker 3: You know, you're installing, how you're guarding all the different
- 4:49Speaker 3: things that the other team is going to do offensively, defensively, personnel,
- 4:54Speaker 3: preparing for special situations, end of game. There's a lot
- 4:58Speaker 3: that's going on. Plus you try to get your team
- 5:00Speaker 3: enough live reps in practice so that they're fresh for
- 5:03Speaker 3: the game, but not too many live reps in practice
- 5:06Speaker 3: so that they're drained for the game. And you only
- 5:09Speaker 3: know that when you've coached for a long time. I
- 5:12Speaker 3: don't look like I coach a long time because I
- 5:14Speaker 3: look so young. You do until you take it twenty
- 5:17Speaker 3: This would be my twenty fifty years a head coach. Wow, yeah, yeah,
- 5:21Speaker 3: twenty five.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Oh you're talking about Saint Benedict's too, Yeah, I mean
- 5:23Speaker 2: that counts right, Yeah, absolutely, That's when I first saw
- 5:27Speaker 2: you in action.
- 5:27Speaker 3: I think, coach. One of my top five best teams
- 5:30Speaker 3: I ever coached was probably at Saint Benedict's. Tristan Thompson
- 5:33Speaker 3: played the three for me. I know that one year
- 5:36Speaker 3: we were so tall at Saint Benedic's. You had j R.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Smith too right Jr.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Swish he was, He's special, all right. Back with Dan
- 5:44Speaker 2: Hurly in just a moment. The Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches
- 5:47Speaker 2: Show continues. I lear Fiel
