Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The First Aim of the Yoga: Receptivity to a Higher Spiritual Consciousness

- 0:00Historically, much of the spiritual focus has been
- 0:04directed towards seeing through the illusory nature of the
- 0:07external reality and shifting the awareness to a pure
- 0:11spiritual consciousness that is not involved in that external
- 0:15reality. Regardless of terminology used,
- 0:19whether it is Maya or samsara or something that represents A
- 0:24transitory field of experience that prepares us for heaven or
- 0:28hell, eternity or some development beyond this world,
- 0:33possibly becoming energetic beings separated from physical
- 0:37substance, the dissolution of the ego personality and the
- 0:42subsequent or consequent merging of that individuality into the
- 0:47universal consciousness turns out to be the primary direction.
- 0:53There are, of course, also those who reject this idea entirely
- 0:57and seek to enhance and improve life in this world.
- 1:01They may treat this as some kind of random existence, or they may
- 1:05simply believe that the purpose of our lives is to gain
- 1:09experience, grow and enjoy the world given to us for our
- 1:13enjoyment. Triorobindo and the Mother look
- 1:17at the manifestation as an omnipresent reality such that
- 1:22the expressed consciousness is systematically evolving over
- 1:26time, and thus there is both an individual progress and a
- 1:31transformation of the external life.
- 1:34As the individual progress impacts that external reality in
- 1:39virtually every direction, however, we can see that an
- 1:43unstable, shifting and jumping mind, subject to the pressure of
- 1:48circumstances and the impulses and sensations that reach the
- 1:52awareness through the senses and the nerve channels, is not a
- 1:57suitable basis for achievement for whatever objective the
- 2:00individual seeks. Those who seek to focus on the
- 2:04external reality as also those who seek to achieve spiritual
- 2:09realization or a shift to a consciousness no longer involved
- 2:14in earthly matters, all need to achieve a certain quietude in
- 2:18the mind to reach their goal, whatever it may be.
- 2:24In today's world, we are constantly bombarded with
- 2:28sights, sounds, smells, sensations and pressures that
- 2:33constantly set the mind in motion.
- 2:36Many of these things spur immediate reactions within us,
- 2:40while others may trigger long stored or embedded reactions
- 2:44that represent memory of the past, either of the individual
- 2:48or even the long process of the evolutionary past that have
- 2:53carried through to maintain their responses in all of us.
- 2:58We thus have a real challenge before us to achieve a calm,
- 3:02quiet, peaceful mind. In his lectures on Rajagoga,
- 3:08Swami Vivekananda goes into considerable depth about the
- 3:11nature of mind, how to observe the mind, how to bring it to a
- 3:16state of quiescence and how then to prepare it to both receive
- 3:21the higher spiritual forces and how to achieve any result for
- 3:25which the seeker is aiming through the concentration of
- 3:28samyama. That is one element of the
- 3:31practice of Raja Yoga. He also describes the status of
- 3:36consciousness called samati, whereby the seeker is not
- 3:40responding actively to all the sensory provocations that
- 3:45otherwise are pressuring him. All spiritual development is
- 3:50founded on the first step, which is achieving this kind of
- 3:53quietude and distance from the impressions of the senses and
- 3:58the pressures of the outer existence.
- 4:01At first a certain amount of separation may be needed to
- 4:05establish this basis, but eventually for the integral Yoga
- 4:10it must become constant even while the individual is fully
- 4:14engaged in carrying out his actions and duties in the
- 4:19external world. Sri Aurobindo writes quote.
- 4:24It is not possible to make a foundation in yoga if the mind
- 4:28is restless. The first thing needed is quiet
- 4:32in the mind. Also to merge the personal
- 4:35consciousness is not the first aim of the yoga.
- 4:39The first aim is to open it to a higher spiritual consciousness
- 4:43and for this also a quiet mind is the first need.
