- 0:00Speaker 1: Notre Dame beats UNC in a ring-filled sloppy contest. This
- 0:06Speaker 1: was on the road, right? This was at North Carolina.
- 0:11Speaker 1: In a game that was probably closer than some people expected.
- 0:15Speaker 1: They find a way to get it done. There was
- 0:17Speaker 1: a big turning point in this game. I thought when
- 0:20Speaker 1: North Carolina got a stop at the goal line, which
- 0:22Speaker 1: would have been a 28-7 game, it stayed at 21-7. Yeah,
- 0:29Speaker 1: UNC went down and scored to make it a one-score game.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I don't think this game was ever really in doubt.
- 0:33Speaker 1: It felt like Notre Dame was just trying to get
- 0:35Speaker 1: out of there. But we are presented by PrizePix. Tom's
- 0:37Speaker 1: gone first all night, so I'll let Cole start us
- 0:39Speaker 1: off on this one.
- 0:40Speaker 2: This is one of those times where I won't say
- 0:44Speaker 2: that you came away super impressed with Notre Dame, but
- 0:47Speaker 2: the score does not indicate how it looked. C.J. Carr
- 0:50Speaker 2: was awesome.
- 0:51Speaker 3: C.J.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Carr was a surgeon out there. And if that's the
- 0:55Speaker 2: one takeaway that I can have with Notre Dame is
- 0:57Speaker 2: that the quarterback play has been phenomenal this year and
- 0:59Speaker 2: it's getting better at overtime. Yeah, he only threw for 234.
- 1:03Speaker 2: He had four touchdowns. I think he found like seven
- 1:05Speaker 2: different receivers. Faison had two big catches and he finished
- 1:09Speaker 2: like a buck 22. A buck 132 and two scores.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Gilbert had a couple of big-time plays. Walton got involved.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Your run game, you finally figured it out. Now, again,
- 1:20Speaker 2: we've been waiting for it to kind of come into motion,
- 1:23Speaker 2: but you figured it out. You averaged 5.4 yards of play.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Walton made some big plays in the backfield. James made
- 1:28Speaker 2: some plays. Williams got involved. There's things to like about
- 1:31Speaker 2: where this team is going underneath Dembrock in the middle
- 1:33Speaker 2: of the month of October. On top of that, your defense...
- 1:37Speaker 2: It wasn't the worst. I mean, you allowed a little
- 1:40Speaker 2: bit too close for comfort, but also keep in mind,
- 1:42Speaker 2: one of the reasons why it was 21-20 wasn't because
- 1:45Speaker 2: your offense gave up a pick six or your defense
- 1:47Speaker 2: gave up a big time play. It was because of
- 1:49Speaker 2: special teams that happened. Like they got an opening kickoff,
- 1:53Speaker 2: taking it back to the house and they muffed on
- 1:55Speaker 2: the PAT, which is why it was a one point affair.
- 1:58Speaker 2: You look at the numbers and the production, it's like
- 2:00Speaker 2: there was never a question mark of when was Notre
- 2:03Speaker 2: Dame going to be able to come on back in
- 2:04Speaker 2: this game. They dominated. They beat them in first down coverage.
- 2:07Speaker 2: They outgained them by 200 yards. Billy Edwards had two
- 2:10Speaker 2: big turnovers that were terrible. And honestly, the score should
- 2:14Speaker 2: have been more. It's just you got a really good
- 2:17Speaker 2: stop from that front four of North Carolina inside of
- 2:20Speaker 2: the red zone at the goal line that kept it
- 2:23Speaker 2: from being a 45-26 win. So like, Notre Dame is
- 2:28Speaker 2: handling business. And the one thing I will say, and
- 2:32Speaker 2: I think that we're really hard on Notre Dame, probably
- 2:34Speaker 2: harder than some people actually like us to be because
- 2:36Speaker 2: we don't go ahead and we don't kiss Notre Dame's ass.
- 2:39Speaker 2: The one thing I will commend Notre Dame on is
- 2:41Speaker 2: they don't schedule those hoity-toity games against, you know, Western
- 2:46Speaker 2: Michigan or Northern Illinois as part of their non-conference schedule
- 2:49Speaker 2: because they don't have a conference. They at least play
- 2:53Speaker 2: powerful teams. This is a powerful team and you handle
- 2:56Speaker 2: business against them. on the road, in a weird environment,
- 2:59Speaker 2: and you were able to make it work. So credit
- 3:02Speaker 2: where credit's due. Offensively, you looked really good. Defensively, you
- 3:05Speaker 2: got some things to clean on up. But you're undefeated still.
- 3:07Speaker 2: You're gaining more ground. We won't know how good you
- 3:10Speaker 2: can be until you face off against Miami. But to
- 3:14Speaker 2: be fair, we're not going to know how good Miami
- 3:16Speaker 2: is until they face off against you. So I'm going
- 3:18Speaker 2: to say on one breath, yeah, they continue to make
- 3:20Speaker 2: the plays and they continue to do a lot of good.
- 3:22Speaker 2: And there's things you can come away with a little
- 3:24Speaker 2: bit underwhelmed with, but at the same time know that
- 3:26Speaker 2: there's room for improvement and they're going to figure it out.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I got to say about one team, I'm going to
- 3:31Speaker 2: say about the other. Notre Dame went into a place
- 3:33Speaker 2: that wasn't home and they handled business and they won
- 3:36Speaker 2: by double digits and it was close, but it really
- 3:38Speaker 2: shouldn't have been.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Tom, thoughts on Notre Dame?
- 3:46Speaker 3: Every week they get better. That should scare people. CJ
- 3:50Speaker 3: Carr gets better every single week. To win this one
- 3:52Speaker 3: going away in the fourth quarter, third and fourth quarter,
- 3:55Speaker 3: three consecutive scores with no response from UNC on the scoreboard.
- 4:02Speaker 3: If you're a Notre Dame fan, it's like, yeah, we
- 4:04Speaker 3: wish we would have given up less points to Cole's
- 4:06Speaker 3: point on the road against an inferior UNC team. Credit
- 4:09Speaker 3: to UNC, the fact that they fought and they kept
- 4:12Speaker 3: this close to the point that they had a lead
- 4:14Speaker 3: early and they were down by one point in the
- 4:17Speaker 3: third quarter, you know, like they kept this thing close relatively,
- 4:20Speaker 3: but CJ Carr has weapons to play with. There's not
- 4:25Speaker 3: a true alpha game changer, one touch wide receiver pass
- 4:30Speaker 3: catcher by any means, but they've got multiple threats. And
- 4:34Speaker 3: I prefer that within a passing game, kind of, we've
- 4:37Speaker 3: talked about what Ohio state's doing and they're force feeding
- 4:39Speaker 3: Jeremiah Smith. Clearly it's working, but if you've got, three
- 4:43Speaker 3: or four guys and you have to protect every blade
- 4:45Speaker 3: of grass, CJ Carr will tear that apart. He is
- 4:49Speaker 3: in the same category, in my opinion, as a Julian
- 4:52Speaker 3: saying in terms of if you don't disrupt his feet
- 4:55Speaker 3: and his timing in the pocket, you just give him
- 4:57Speaker 3: time to pick you apart. Sometimes it's not even that
- 5:00Speaker 3: sexy to look at with CJ Carr. It's just very
- 5:03Speaker 3: clinical and methodical. So I like the way he plays
- 5:06Speaker 3: and they're finding answers in the running game. It's a
- 5:09Speaker 3: little bit more of the room working together as a whole.
- 5:11Speaker 3: I think we all thought, man, are they going to
- 5:13Speaker 3: have answers after Love and Price went off to the
- 5:16Speaker 3: National Football League? I wouldn't say they have the same
- 5:18Speaker 3: level of ability at the running back position. They got
- 5:21Speaker 3: a lot of solid guys. They got a good offensive line,
- 5:24Speaker 3: and they're working on the running game every single week,
- 5:26Speaker 3: and they're getting better. So I think that should scare
- 5:28Speaker 3: teams that play Notre Dame, and that should scare teams
- 5:31Speaker 3: that await Notre Dame come the college football playoff because
- 5:34Speaker 3: at that point, You could care less what the scoreboard
- 5:36Speaker 3: looks like. Just find a way to win. And they
- 5:39Speaker 3: won this going away to what Cole had said. They
- 5:42Speaker 3: finished really strong. That's the mark of a great team.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I'll get right back to this clip from The Power 2,
- 5:47Speaker 1: our live show on college football addiction. But first, I
- 5:50Speaker 1: want to tell you about the PrizePix app. We appreciate
- 5:52Speaker 1: PrizePix for their support. You can play $ 5 there with
- 5:55Speaker 1: the code HMA, and all new users who win their
- 5:58Speaker 1: first $ 5 lineup get $ 100. and $ 50 in lineups instantly
- 6:02Speaker 1: if they use that code. Again, HMA. Give me the
- 6:05Speaker 1: more on Bajon Robinson's touchdowns. It's set at. 5. Cole, Tom,
- 6:09Speaker 1: and I all picked this, which you should go do
- 6:12Speaker 1: as well. Give me the more on Tyler Shuck's passing yards, 254.5.
- 6:18Speaker 1: We appreciate prize picks for their support. Now back to
- 6:21Speaker 1: the clip of the Power 2.
- 6:22Speaker 2: By the way, real fast before Tom, TJ goes, the
- 6:26Speaker 2: performance that we saw, even with all the.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Slop that was out there, That was my point. Yeah,
- 6:30Speaker 1: you got it.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Do you think that that team could still win it
- 6:34Speaker 2: at BYU?
- 6:36Speaker 1: I'll tell you, that is an interesting litmus test for
- 6:39Speaker 1: them because BYU did the same thing on the road
- 6:43Speaker 1: in Fort Worth, and their defense is really freaking good.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Their offense with LJ Martin is worrisome, but they're also
- 6:51Speaker 1: just the definite. They hadn't won in Fort Worth. I
- 6:54Speaker 1: know this is not a BYU wrap-up, but they hadn't
- 6:55Speaker 1: won in Fort Worth in 20 years. 2006 was the
- 6:59Speaker 1: last time they'd won a game in Fort worth. That
- 7:01Speaker 1: is where good seasons had gone to die for them.
- 7:03Speaker 1: And so it was more than just a game. I
- 7:04Speaker 1: know TCU is not great. TCU was averaging, giving up
- 7:07Speaker 1: just 12 points a game coming into this thing. So
- 7:09Speaker 1: their defense has been really good this year. Sloppy, rain filled,
- 7:13Speaker 1: low scoring contests where their defense was really good. I'm
- 7:16Speaker 1: very interested to see from both perspectives, what I think
- 7:20Speaker 1: is a really good BYU defense and a, and a good,
- 7:22Speaker 1: and another name team that I think is better than BYU.
- 7:25Speaker 1: But I, Yeah. I mean, if they could, I think
- 7:28Speaker 1: BYU is a lot better than North Carolina. So I
- 7:30Speaker 1: do think Notre Dame probably needs to play a tick
- 7:31Speaker 1: better than they did this weekend in Provo. Hopefully weather
- 7:36Speaker 1: conditions will be a little bit better, but that's unpredictable.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I think it'll be a little bit more of a
- 7:41Speaker 1: challenging environment. I think Notre Dame fans will do really
- 7:44Speaker 1: great showing up out there, but BYU won't, you know, they,
- 7:48Speaker 1: I think they'll have a lower percentage of fans. Like
- 7:50Speaker 1: that'll be a more intense environment. BYU fans have been
- 7:53Speaker 1: talking about this game since it was scheduled. And I
- 7:55Speaker 1: would expect them to pack it out and be pretty,
- 7:58Speaker 1: they get pretty hostile for, for not, not hostile, but
- 8:00Speaker 1: pretty wild for, for being, you know, fairly sober as a,
- 8:04Speaker 1: as a general crowd. So they're, they're high on the Lord,
- 8:07Speaker 1: but that's it. So, yeah, I mean, I, I do,
- 8:11Speaker 1: I do. Yeah. I was going to say like the,
- 8:14Speaker 1: the Davo would be upset at me saying somebody else was,
- 8:16Speaker 1: but no, I think, I mean, yes, they can absolutely
- 8:20Speaker 1: get it done. They probably need to play a little
- 8:23Speaker 1: bit better than they did against North Carolina just so
- 8:26Speaker 1: that that thing doesn't go down to the wire, which
- 8:28Speaker 1: they very well may.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Yeah, but at the same time, I don't know if
- 8:33Speaker 2: the secondary of BYU is going to stop what we
- 8:35Speaker 2: saw from C.J.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Carr.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Even with the faults that we saw defensively. Now it's
- 8:39Speaker 2: one of those things where the defense, like the defense
- 8:41Speaker 2: allowed an easy touchdown to Jelani Thurman right before halftime.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Like you look at that and you say to yourself, okay,
- 8:46Speaker 2: we got to be better prepared for that. is bear
- 8:48Speaker 2: Bachmeier at the weather situations, which we just saw down
- 8:51Speaker 2: at TCU. We're in the same display. He's going to
- 8:54Speaker 2: find a weapon that's built like Jelani Thurman better yet.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Is there a weapon on a team like BYU that
- 9:00Speaker 2: is as good as Jelani Thurman to where that's where
- 9:02Speaker 2: I ask it in that standpoint?
- 9:07Speaker 1: I'm not sure, but no, I don't think so. Like,
- 9:11Speaker 1: I think you're right there. Um, I mean, overall, yeah,
- 9:17Speaker 1: I don't think they're going to be tested in an
- 9:18Speaker 1: incredible way until they get to that Miami game.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Yep. I agree. It's fair.
- 9:24Speaker 3: BYU will play them tough, and I encourage Irish fans
- 9:26Speaker 3: to go to Provo and soak it all in. Phrasing. Nothing?
- 9:32Speaker 1: Nothing?
- 9:34Speaker 2: Bummer.
- 9:35Speaker 1: No, that was good. Not falling past me, buddy. Yeah,
- 9:38Speaker 1: you're not shaking the bed on that one. Prize pick.
- 9:40Speaker 1: We'll underuse this to play a $ 5 lineup and win.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Get $ 150 in lineups instantly if they use code HMA.
