- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean here. It is a Monday.
- 0:15It is the 14th of August. Yes, August.
- 0:20Just make sure I get that right. Lovely to have you company as we
- 0:24begin a new week together, reading further through God's
- 0:28Word. And we continue reading in the
- 0:30book of Isaiah. And at the moment we are reading
- 0:32through the section where Isaiah is pronouncing God's judgment on
- 0:37all the nations of the world. And today God's eyes fall upon
- 0:41Babylon, who from the perspective of God's people is
- 0:45this enormous, powerful, mighty empire.
- 0:49And they couldn't even begin to imagine that in a few 100 years
- 0:53they would be walked all over by the Persians, who would replace
- 0:56them. And so God is saying, don't
- 0:59trust your alliance with Babylon.
- 1:03Don't go to them for stability. Come to me to be rescued.
- 1:08Come to me for your permanent place of safety.
- 1:12So this is God pointing out the fallibility of human powers.
- 1:18So join me, friends, as we read together.
- 1:21Isaiah, Chapter 21. This message came to me
- 1:35concerning Babylon, the desert by the sea.
- 1:39Disaster is roaring down on you from the desert like a whirlwind
- 1:44sweeping in from the Negev. I see a terrifying vision.
- 1:49I see the Betrayer betraying the Destroyer destroying.
- 1:54Go ahead, New Elimites and Meads attack and lay siege.
- 2:00I will make an end to all the groaning Babylon caused.
- 2:04My stomach aches and burns with pain.
- 2:07Sharp pangs of anguish are upon me.
- 2:10Like those of a woman in labor. I grow faint when I hear what
- 2:14God is planning. I'm too afraid to look.
- 2:18My mind reels and my heart races.
- 2:21I longed for evening to come, but now I'm terrified of the
- 2:25dark look. They are preparing a great
- 2:29feast. They are spreading rugs for
- 2:31people to sit on. Everyone is eating and drinking,
- 2:35but quick, grab your Shields and prepare for battle.
- 2:38You are being attacked. Meanwhile, the Lord said to me,
- 2:43put a watchman on the city wall. Let him shout out what he sees.
- 2:48He should look for Chariots drawn by pairs of horses, and
- 2:51for riders on donkeys and camels.
- 2:54Let the watchman be fully alert. Then the watchman called out.
- 3:00Day after day I've stood on the watchtower, my Lord.
- 3:03Night after night I've remained at my post.
- 3:06Now at last look, here comes a man in a chariot with a pair of
- 3:11horses. Then the watchman said, Babylon
- 3:15has fallen, fallen. All the idols of Babylon lie
- 3:20broken on the ground. Oh my people thrashed and
- 3:24winnowed. I have told you everything the
- 3:27Lord of Heaven's armies has said, Everything the God of
- 3:31Israel has told me. This message came to me
- 3:36concerning Eden. Someone from Eden keeps calling
- 3:40to me. Watchmen, how much longer until
- 3:43morning? When will the night be over?
- 3:46The watchman replies. Morning is coming, but night
- 3:50will soon return. If you wish to ask again, then
- 3:54come back and ask. This message came to me
- 3:59concerning Arabia. Oh caravans from Dadan hide in
- 4:04the deserts of Arabia, oh people of Tema, bring water to these
- 4:09thirsty people, food to these weary refugees.
- 4:13They have fled. From the sword, from the drawn
- 4:16sword, from the bent bow and the terrors of battle, the Lord said
- 4:21to me Within a year, counting each day, all the glory of Qadar
- 4:27will come to an end. Only a few of its courageous
- 4:31Archers will survive. I, the Lord, the God of Israel,
- 4:37have spoken our Lord, from our vantage
- 4:51point, some things around us in life look like such a sure bit,
- 4:55such a firm foundation on which to build our hope.
- 5:00But here we hear your words through your prophet Isaiah that
- 5:04says everything will fall, everything in its time will end
- 5:11except for your mercy, your faithfulness and your goodness
- 5:16for us. Help us always to turn to you.
- 5:21And when it comes time to drop anchor on a solid rock, to hold
- 5:26a steady and the stormy seas of life, let that rock always be
- 5:30you. Let our anchor always find its
- 5:34way back to you. You are our identity.
- 5:38We are your children. You are our hope.
- 5:42You offer us eternal life. You are our companion, with arms
- 5:48wide open and forgiveness ready to be offered.
- 5:53Ah, we thank you for being this incredible and wonderful,
- 5:56eternal and loving God. We lift you up and praise you.
- 6:00And it's in the name of Jesus that we pray all these things.
- 6:04Amen.
