Transcript
- 1:04Emeal Zwane: Ray, have you ever, in evangelism, shared Isaiah 53 with a Jew?
- 1:08Emeal Zwane: Yeah, and what's been the response?
- 1:10Emeal Zwane: Wonderful.
- 1:11Emeal Zwane: From then, I'm going to get it.
- 1:14Emeal Zwane: I remember.
- 1:15Ray Comfort: I did a video it just got up with Reuben the Jewish math professor.
- 1:19Ray Comfort: Yeah, yeah, and we talked about it and I mentioned Isaiah 53 and how it speaks of a man.
- 1:24Ray Comfort: It doesn't speak of the nation of Israel, and he was just saying wow, and this is a Jew saying wow, as I quoted Isaiah and Psalm two.
- 1:35Oscar Navarro: Yeah, by the way, if you have not listened or if you have not seen that video, I really urge you to go to YouTube and look it up.
- 1:41Oscar Navarro: It is really really good.
- 1:43Oscar Navarro: The man almost begs for salvation at the end of the interview.
- 1:49Emeal Zwane: Yeah, it's beautiful.
- 1:49Emeal Zwane: It really was.
- 1:50Emeal Zwane: It's one of the best I think you've ever done, right?
- 1:52Emeal Zwane: We all know I'm crazy yeah, amen.
- 2:03Emeal Zwane: So it's no surprise that one night last week, as I sat alone on my couch in my living room, I laughed out loud to myself.
- 2:12Emeal Zwane: But the question is, why did I laugh out loud to myself?
- 2:16Ray Comfort: Because you're looking into the mirror On my watch and you're looking into the mirror Because you're high-kitched in the mirror.
- 2:20Mark Spence: That's annoying you as well.
- 2:21Emeal Zwane: The question is why did I laugh out loud to myself as I sat alone on my couch in my living room last week?
- 2:26Emeal Zwane: I'm going with mirror?
- 2:27Emeal Zwane: It's because, friends, my brain conjured up a wonderful image of Ray Comfort with a perm.
- 2:37Emeal Zwane: With a what With a perm?
- 2:41Ray Comfort: Perm?
- 2:42Ray Comfort: What are you talking about that?
- 2:44Ray Comfort: I was just going to tell you I just wrote it down here that I accidentally took three of my wife's supplements.
- 2:52Emeal Zwane: I saw them getting a perm.
- 2:54Mark Spence: Yeah, see it was appropriate Ray looking like Keith Green Ray did you Back in the day?
- 3:00Emeal Zwane: perms were the thing.
- 3:01Emeal Zwane: I mean guys were the thing.
- 3:02Ray Comfort: Well, you better explain what is a permanent curl that you're getting here.
- 3:05Ray Comfort: But it's not permanent.
- 3:05Ray Comfort: Yeah, it's like what you've got.
- 3:07Ray Comfort: It is.
- 3:09Emeal Zwane: Seriously, if I let my hair go would you have a perm Ray?
- 3:11Mark Spence: did you have?
- 3:11Oscar Navarro: a perm no.
- 3:12Emeal Zwane: Wait if I let my hair go.
- 3:13Oscar Navarro: Yeah, I want to know what would happen with Easy.
- 3:15Emeal Zwane: Would it be a fro?
- 3:16Emeal Zwane: Like a Middle Eastern fro you guys know, my hair doesn't grow out, it grows up.
- 3:19Emeal Zwane: Basically, I think it is so cool to have a huge fro.
- 3:22Ray Comfort: I was thinking about it the other day.
- 3:23Ray Comfort: You see guys walking down the street and they got a fro.
- 3:24Emeal Zwane: I think that's very cool.
- 3:26Ray Comfort: Yeah, you could have like a really bad 80s like flat top, you'd never get a head injury.
- 3:30Ray Comfort: I know Kid and play.
- 3:32Oscar Navarro: It's funny, I bet you can grow a landing pad up there.
- 3:34Emeal Zwane: When we.
- 3:34Emeal Zwane: But it's funny, though, when people have like big hair and get rid of it, they look like half the person they were.
- 3:40Ray Comfort: Well, you're already like half person.
- 3:41Ray Comfort: We want you to grow them.
- 3:43Ray Comfort: It's like my dog.
- 3:44Emeal Zwane: When I give her a bath, she like disappears.
- 3:47Mark Spence: She's like.
- 3:47Mark Spence: She's like a rat.
- 3:47Mark Spence: You clean your dog Well that's why I'm a clean person.
- 3:52Emeal Zwane: Seriously, I was thinking yesterday.
- 3:54Emeal Zwane: I wish I had a dog shower.
- 3:55Emeal Zwane: I'd shower my dog every day if I could, Really.
- 3:57Emeal Zwane: Anyway, Ray, back to your perm.
- 3:59Ray Comfort: You take the dog in the shower, will you?
- 4:00Ray Comfort: That's what I do, no way, yeah, I always do that.
- 4:04Ray Comfort: So much easier.
- 4:04Ray Comfort: That's just not right, there's no panic from the dog.
- 4:06Ray Comfort: They just stand in the corner looking terrified.
- 4:08Ray Comfort: You spray the, you send the shower towards them or her, and it's all over and they're thrilled.
- 4:14Emeal Zwane: Yeah, I'm not into that.
- 4:15Emeal Zwane: Ray, now Ray perm.
- 4:16Emeal Zwane: Did you ever, ray, seriously get a perm?
- 4:20Emeal Zwane: No, what do you think I'm crazy?
- 4:24Ray Comfort: I did have hair on my, I just didn't brush my hair when I was in my late teens.
- 4:28Ray Comfort: It was just hanging on my shoulders and sun bleached.
- 4:32Emeal Zwane: Kind of looking like Seiway, seiway.
- 4:34Oscar Navarro: How many guaranteed YouTube views.
- 4:36Oscar Navarro: Would it take to get you to have a perm right now?
- 4:38Ray Comfort: Oh, I'd do it for a million views.
- 4:40Oscar Navarro: There, you go.
- 4:41Ray Comfort: You heard it here.
- 4:42Emeal Zwane: Ray, why don't you grow your hair out like really long?
- 4:47Ray Comfort: Because, I'm out of my teenage years.
- 4:49Ray Comfort: I've grown up.
- 4:50Emeal Zwane: No, that would be so cool to see you with long hair.
- 4:53Emeal Zwane: Really, no, not really.
- 4:55Ray Comfort: You made me shave my mustache off when we were in Israel.
- 4:58Emeal Zwane: Oh, that was the greatest joy of my life.
- 5:00Emeal Zwane: It was terrible.
- 5:01Emeal Zwane: Seriously, because you know I detested your mustache.
- 5:03Emeal Zwane: That's no secret.
- 5:04Emeal Zwane: Everybody knows that and I see it, but I, honestly, I could not believe my eyes.
- 5:12Emeal Zwane: When you walked out the next day from a hotel room and your mustache was gone.
- 5:16Emeal Zwane: I was like are you saying moustache?
- 5:19Emeal Zwane: Yeah, it is Moustache, moustache, that's what I say.
- 5:22Mark Spence: My nose is so important it had to be underlined Ray what was the last time you were completely clean shaven, though I know you that you cut it down really low, but you can still see it's double In the late 20s I tried eight times grommastache and it wouldn't come through.
- 5:34Ray Comfort: It was pathetic.
- 5:35Emeal Zwane: It was like you.
- 5:35Emeal Zwane: Like you get it?
- 5:39Ray Comfort: No, but remember when you were in Israel and you came out with your mustache yes and I had breakfast in the morning and, as a teenage kid that really loved me, says you don't look like Ray Comfort anymore.
- 5:47Ray Comfort: Yeah, remember.
- 5:48Ray Comfort: And I was just shattered.
- 5:49Ray Comfort: He was terrified.
- 5:50Ray Comfort: And then my wife didn't like it either.
- 5:52Ray Comfort: She said big grudge.
- 5:53Emeal Zwane: Did she really?
- 5:54Emeal Zwane: Oh, yes.
- 5:54Ray Comfort: I had to have trained nasal here to fill in the gap.
- 5:58Emeal Zwane: She wasn't happy with me when you got back home.
- 6:01Emeal Zwane: Huh Well, it was me, not you.
- 6:02Emeal Zwane: She never got me to do it.
- 6:03Emeal Zwane: Why made you do it?
- 6:03Ray Comfort: Yeah well, you didn't make me do it, you just strongly suggest you don't do well with peer pressure.
- 6:08Emeal Zwane: Knife to my throat.
- 6:08Emeal Zwane: You really don't Prove it.
- 6:09Emeal Zwane: Did you ever have a mullet Ray?
- 6:11Emeal Zwane: A mullet yeah.
- 6:14Ray Comfort: No, that is disgusting.
- 6:15Ray Comfort: I saw kids were in right now.
- 6:17Ray Comfort: Oh, it's horrible, like half of our listeners have mullets.
- 6:20Oscar Navarro: Yeah, that means half our listeners are Canadians.
- 6:24Ray Comfort: Oh, that awful.
- 6:26Emeal Zwane: Mullets are big in Canada.
- 6:27Emeal Zwane: They're big right now, back in the day, I know.
- 6:29Ray Comfort: Everything goes around in circles, oscar, don't you?
- 6:30Emeal Zwane: do it.
- 6:31Oscar Navarro: I told my wife You're in everything, that's in.
- 6:33Oscar Navarro: You're in everything.
- 6:33Oscar Navarro: No, that's not true.
- 6:34Oscar Navarro: I did tell my wife that during our two week break in December I might grow a mullet.
- 6:39Oscar Navarro: No, please.
- 6:41Emeal Zwane: I think your hair is like mine, though.
- 6:42Emeal Zwane: It will just curl.
- 6:43Ray Comfort: Yeah, a little puff work in the back.
- 6:46Emeal Zwane: Mark mullet.
- 6:47Mark Spence: No no, you never did a mullet back in the 80s, kirk did a mullet I yeah, I'm not a mullet guy I don't know if it was a mullet, it was just a bush behind him.
- 6:57Emeal Zwane: You know who had the worst mullet ever?
- 6:59Emeal Zwane: I think was Mel Gibson.
- 7:02Emeal Zwane: He had a pretty nasty mullet.
- 7:04Mark Spence: And that's business in the front, parting the back.
- 7:08Emeal Zwane: But Rachel used to say this.
- 7:09Emeal Zwane: They used to use this acronym.
- 7:11Emeal Zwane: You're not going to remember it.
- 7:13Emeal Zwane: No, it was that like parting the front Business in the back, Business in the front.
- 7:17Mark Spence: Parting the back something like that.
- 7:18Oscar Navarro: I feel like.
- 7:19Emeal Zwane: Albert Muller.
- 7:22Oscar Navarro: Albert Muller is like a pseudo character of himself called Albert mullet.
- 7:26Oscar Navarro: It's like this younger, rebellious rock and roll self.
- 7:30Oscar Navarro: That would be funny.
- 7:32Oscar Navarro: He's going to make us take his episode off Albert mullet Off our list.
- 7:36Emeal Zwane: The adventures of Albert mullet.
- 7:38Ray Comfort: That'd be a fun thing to do, really.
- 7:41Emeal Zwane: There was a thought that had a real bad mullet.
- 7:43Emeal Zwane: Was it Ray Bolton or Bolton?
- 7:46Mark Spence: Michael Bolton.
- 7:46Mark Spence: Michael Bolton.
- 7:47Mark Spence: Michael Bolton oh yeah, from the 80s Remember his man, it was like is he still around?
- 7:52Oscar Navarro: I?
- 7:52Mark Spence: don't know.
- 7:53Mark Spence: Well, EZ still listens to the music In his prayer.
- 7:56Mark Spence: Closet out comes Michael Bolton from underneath.
- 7:59Emeal Zwane: The worst is balding guys with mullets.
- 8:01Emeal Zwane: Those are the worst.
- 8:02Emeal Zwane: I think they're trying to make us Well, it's worse when the mullet comes over the front.
- 8:05Emeal Zwane: It's a cover up, okay.
- 8:11Ray Comfort: Apologies to any big guys.
- 8:12Oscar Navarro: Exploring the messianic prophecies of mullets.
- 8:15Emeal Zwane: We're going to lose all the mullet here.
- 8:16Emeal Zwane: That's what I'm saying.
- 8:17Emeal Zwane: They're all going to be gone.
- 8:18Emeal Zwane: All right, france.
- 8:20Emeal Zwane: Here is a wonderful comment from Liso Bezo.
- 8:24Emeal Zwane: Liso Bezo, 1216.
- 8:27Emeal Zwane: This past Lent I gave up TV and entertainment and got to a point where I couldn't listen to any more worship songs.
- 8:33Emeal Zwane: One podcast became my thing.
- 8:35Emeal Zwane: I randomly came upon the podcast when Ray visited Janet Partial, or, as Ray says, janet Pashel to promote one of his new books.
- 8:44Emeal Zwane: Ray, you are my hero.
- 8:45Emeal Zwane: I thought he was awesome, so gave this podcast a try.
- 8:49Emeal Zwane: First episode I listened to was on Job, and I think they talked about tofu.
- 8:56Mark Spence: We did talk about tofu.
- 8:58Ray Comfort: Welcome to the podcast.
- 9:01Emeal Zwane: Then I heard EZ's voice.
- 9:03Emeal Zwane: Sorry about that, but I kept listening.
- 9:07Ray Comfort: Did it really say that?
- 9:08Ray Comfort: Oh, that's funny.
- 9:10Emeal Zwane: I heard EZ's voice dot dot dot, but I kept listening.
- 9:13Emeal Zwane: I can't count how many episodes I've listened to now.
- 9:16Emeal Zwane: This podcast has changed my walk with God.
- 9:19Oscar Navarro: Is it bitter or worse?
- 9:20Oscar Navarro: Right.
- 9:22Emeal Zwane: I'm a cancer survivor and gave my life to God a long time ago and thought I was doing pretty well.
- 9:27Emeal Zwane: In addition to focusing on reading scripture, this podcast has changed my life and helped sanctify my walk.
- 9:33Emeal Zwane: The fear of the Lord is a real thing and has transformed my life.
- 9:36Emeal Zwane: You guys fostered that in me.
- 9:38Emeal Zwane: I thank God for you all the time.
- 9:40Emeal Zwane: I have shared your podcast with so many people and I think I drive my Bible study attendees crazy because I talk about you guys all the time.
- 9:47Emeal Zwane: Also, since this spring, I've gone through major anxiety slash, panic issues.
- 9:51Emeal Zwane: Anytime I feel alone, afraid or panicked, I listen to you guys.
- 9:55Emeal Zwane: You don't know how this impacts you are making for the kingdom.
- 10:00Emeal Zwane: I also say hi, friends, all the time now in EZ's voice.
- 10:03Emeal Zwane: God bless you.
- 10:05Emeal Zwane: Ez's voice is now my favorite.
- 10:08Emeal Zwane: No, love you all dearly Elizabeth.
- 10:10Mark Spence: Did you add that?
- 10:11Mark Spence: Yeah, what do you add?
- 10:13Mark Spence: What do you add?
- 10:13Emeal Zwane: Redemption I would Hang on.
- 10:17Ray Comfort: It's her name's, elizabeth.
- 10:18Ray Comfort: That's why she likes your little squeaky voice.
- 10:20Mark Spence: That's why it also says please read, please read.
- 10:22Mark Spence: Ez, I've noticed this that people will put compliments.
- 10:25Mark Spence: Did you see that?
- 10:26Mark Spence: Okay?
- 10:27Oscar Navarro: Well, I was at a church preaching two weeks ago in Colorado and they were like it's so clear that EZ reads all the comments written about EZ.
- 10:35Oscar Navarro: I was like thank you, Of course, Of course.
- 10:39Emeal Zwane: Oh, Elizabeth, thank you so much.
- 10:40Emeal Zwane: Seriously, when I read this to Rachel the other day, I bawled my eyes out.
- 10:43Emeal Zwane: That's why I didn't cry.
- 10:44Emeal Zwane: Now I got it all out.
- 10:46Emeal Zwane: Just the thought that the Lord has used us in this way in your life means more to us than you know Elizabeth.
- 10:51Mark Spence: So be it a male.
- 10:52Emeal Zwane: Thank you and God bless you.
- 10:53Emeal Zwane: All right Friends.

- 11:14Emeal Zwane: Well, we did one on anxiety.
- 11:16Emeal Zwane: We did Anxiety attacked yeah, because that was one of my pastor sermon titles.
- 11:19Ray Comfort: So we must have done one.
- 11:20Emeal Zwane: Yeah, we probably talking about it.
- 11:21Emeal Zwane: Why Christianity, booklet Ray, was that a question?
- 11:27Emeal Zwane: Why Christianity?
- 11:29Ray Comfort: Why not this?
- 11:30Emeal Zwane: is one of our top selling books, by the way.
- 11:33Ray Comfort: Say it.
- 11:34Ray Comfort: What's that?
- 11:34Ray Comfort: I have a million copies in print.
- 11:38Ray Comfort: I think it's very, very popular because it uses that illustration of the four things you're offered in a plane.
- 11:46Ray Comfort: It makes it very clear.
- 11:48Emeal Zwane: Well, we have an episode on it too on the.
- 11:50Emeal Zwane: Youtube channel One of my favorites for sure Really really good.
- 11:53Emeal Zwane: My friend Eric Joule Bean is in it and I'm in it, which is what really matters, but that was a fun one to film, ray going to that airplane graveyard.
- 12:05Ray Comfort: Yeah, it was Standing on the wing of a plane.
- 12:08Ray Comfort: That was really cool.
- 12:11Emeal Zwane: Alright, friends, make sure to check it out why Christianity Solving lies most of the questions Booklet.

- 12:25Mark Spence: And I said every day Noah ordered it.
- 12:29Mark Spence: Yeah, Noah ordered one for the shipping and everything and Sue goes.
- 12:33Mark Spence: I can't have him pay for this, I go.
- 12:35Mark Spence: Well, now all my kids want one.

- 12:54Emeal Zwane: Ooh good, Alright, friends, time to get started with the show.
- 13:00Ray Comfort: I'm so excited about this.
- 13:01Ray Comfort: Psalm 53 is one of my favorite Psalms, so I need to get into it.
- 13:05Ray Comfort: I've been digging into it all week and memorizing it.
- 13:08Emeal Zwane: Imagine if you prepped for Psalm 53.
- 13:10Emeal Zwane: Yes, friends today we are exploring the Messianic prophecies in Isaiah 50.
- 13:14Ray Comfort: And we were going to do this a week or so ago but we put it off because this is such a hallowed ground of Scripture I mean all Scriptures hallowed ground.
- 13:23Ray Comfort: But this is super special and I was thinking how, when we approach it, we're going to handle it with white gloves because it's so special.
- 13:30Ray Comfort: It is special and especially when you consider the fact that Isaiah wrote Isaiah Isaiah Ray.
- 13:39Emeal Zwane: Seriously, you guys say it like that.
- 13:40Emeal Zwane: Yeah, I had to relearn it when I came over here.
- 13:45Ray Comfort: I think Rachel finally changed her ways in that regard.
- 13:48Emeal Zwane: That's pretty annoying, isaiah.
- 13:49Emeal Zwane: What's wrong with that, isaiah?
- 13:54Emeal Zwane: You don't feel that's?
- 13:55Ray Comfort: unnatural to say like that.
- 13:58Oscar Navarro: No.
- 13:59Emeal Zwane: Let me hear you say it, isaiah.
- 14:02Ray Comfort: Anyway, that was my gladiator voice yeah.
- 14:06Emeal Zwane: But, he wrote it around 685 BC, so almost 700.
- 14:10Emeal Zwane: Years before Christ came.
- 14:12Emeal Zwane: Honestly, guys, I know, we're going to jump into it, but I just want to say at the outset I don't think you need anything else in the pages of the Old Testament besides Isaiah 53 to demonstrate that Christ is who Scripture tells us he is.
- 14:24Emeal Zwane: Well, god would disagree.
- 14:25Emeal Zwane: I was thinking that, but I didn't want to say it.
- 14:28Emeal Zwane: But no, I see what you're saying.
- 14:30Emeal Zwane: I'm saying in terms of being able to recognize the fact that you're a Christian, you're a Christian.
- 14:36Mark Spence: You're a Christian, you're a.
- 14:37Emeal Zwane: Christian.
- 14:37Emeal Zwane: You're a Christian.
- 14:37Emeal Zwane: You know being able to recognize like how can you not realize this is Jesus?
- 14:44Ray Comfort: Specificity.
- 14:44Ray Comfort: That's what it has.
- 14:46Ray Comfort: That's specific Specificity, yeah.
- 14:50Emeal Zwane: Did I say that wrong?
- 14:51Emeal Zwane: No, I misheard you.
- 14:54Emeal Zwane: But you know, I think I watched a video once where someone in Israel was going up to people.
- 15:02Ray Comfort: Yeah, tell us about it.
- 15:03Ray Comfort: Right, it's the guy that loves the ministry of God, the Gospel of God, and he was reading Isaiah 53 to people and saying where is this from?
- 15:11Ray Comfort: And they said it's obviously the New Testament.
- 15:14Ray Comfort: But it wasn't.
- 15:16Ray Comfort: It was the old test of it.
- 15:16Ray Comfort: And I actually watched a video this morning.
- 15:18Ray Comfort: Not many views, but it was a guy who's repreaching, I think in New York, and he was reading Isaiah and nobody was listening to him.
- 15:26Ray Comfort: It was just, and suddenly two Orthodox Jews stopped and listened to him and they said that's talking about us, and I'm not going to be.
- 15:37Emeal Zwane: Yeah, it would make no sense in that context.
- 15:40Emeal Zwane: You see verses too within Isaiah that make a differentiation between and usually they'll say that because it says the servant of the Lord, and there's times when Israel is called the servant of the Lord.
- 15:50Emeal Zwane: But you see in there where there's a differentiation made between Israel and the servant.
- 15:57Ray Comfort: They're mentioned both within the same text.
- 15:58Ray Comfort: Are you going to read it to us?
- 16:01Emeal Zwane: Isaiah 53?
- 16:02Emeal Zwane: I know, hey, scotty, I'm hearing the resonance in my voice.
- 16:05Emeal Zwane: Now it's coming back.
- 16:09Ray Comfort: We've got 40 minutes of easy talking I want to talk more.
- 16:11Emeal Zwane: We've been trying to adjust these mics.
- 16:12Emeal Zwane: But yes, you're right, Ray, we go back to 52.
- 16:16Emeal Zwane: Unfortunately, sometimes, you know, with verse breaks we don't get full context.
- 16:21Ray Comfort: What was the coffee break in the Old?
- 16:23Emeal Zwane: Testament.
- 16:24Emeal Zwane: But let me just say this real quick and then I'll let you guys jump in.
- 16:28Emeal Zwane: I see Oscar there.
- 16:29Emeal Zwane: Just I'm not ready to jump in, but I listened to a great sermon by MacArthur on this, so a number of the things I'm going to share come from that.
- 16:37Emeal Zwane: But he highlighted the fact that Isaiah is really kind of split into two.
- 16:42Emeal Zwane: So you have chapters 1 to 39, and those are dealing with God's judgment on the southern kingdom of Judah.
- 16:48Emeal Zwane: They had gone really bad.
- 16:51Emeal Zwane: God had talked to Judah about how they went further than even the pagan Gentile nations went.
- 16:57Emeal Zwane: And then we know that in the captivity to Babylon there were three phases in that regard.
- 17:02Emeal Zwane: And then chapters 40 to 66 deal with salvation for Israel and starting in chapter 42, that's where we see the servant of Jehovah being mentioned.
- 17:12Emeal Zwane: And then it culminates in chapter 52, there at the end, and then into 53.
- 17:16Emeal Zwane: And Isaiah has been called the gospel of the Old Testament.
- 17:20Emeal Zwane: Yeah, spurgeon, I think it might have been Spurgeon, I'm sure others as well, and it's pretty interesting when you look at it right.
- 17:27Emeal Zwane: So when you start at chapter 40, verse 3, the salvation section, it says in verse 3, the voice of one crying in the wilderness.
- 17:34Emeal Zwane: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for God.
- 17:37Emeal Zwane: And that's how some of the books in the New Testament open up, right with John the Baptist that was referencing him.
- 17:44Emeal Zwane: We see that in Mark 3, 1, luke 3, 4 to 6.
- 17:47Emeal Zwane: Then at the end of Isaiah, chapter 66, we read this for as the new heavens and the new earth which I will make shall remain before me, says the Lord, so shall your descendants and your name remain.
- 17:59Emeal Zwane: And then we see in Revelation 21 and 22,.
- 18:01Emeal Zwane: That's how the New Testament closes.
- 18:03Emeal Zwane: All right, revelation 21, 1,.
- 18:05Emeal Zwane: Now I say a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth have passed away.
- 18:09Emeal Zwane: And so it's just amazing that parallel, and that's why I think some reference it as a gospel.
- 18:14Emeal Zwane: All right, your turn, guys.
- 18:16Emeal Zwane: No we're good.
- 18:18Ray Comfort: When are you going to read it?
- 18:20Emeal Zwane: I will, but I want to see if anyone else has something to say first.
- 18:23Oscar Navarro: Yeah Well, I mean, I think it's important to not get ahead of our skis before we get into God's word, especially because we start.
- 18:31Oscar Navarro: You've never heard of that one before.
- 18:33Ray Comfort: No, ahead of our skis.
- 18:34Oscar Navarro: That's when you break a leg.
- 18:35Oscar Navarro: If you jump off a ramp skiing and your head goes in front of your skis, you're in trouble.
- 18:40Emeal Zwane: Yeah.
- 18:41Ray Comfort: Well, it's off his, come off your shoulders.
- 18:42Ray Comfort: That's why, yeah, it's easy.
- 18:44Emeal Zwane: It almost happened to me.
- 18:46Oscar Navarro: No, so we don't want to get ahead of our skis.
- 18:47Oscar Navarro: I think Easy brings up a really good first point, and I think there's two points that we need to lay sort of a foundation for before we get into it.
- 18:54Oscar Navarro: Point number one, which is what Easy's doing, is the sum total of the book of Isaiah.
- 19:01Oscar Navarro: You want to read Isaiah 53 within the context of the book of Isaiah.
- 19:04Oscar Navarro: And then the second point is the nature of prophecy, since we're focusing specifically on the prophetic nature of Isaiah.
- 19:14Oscar Navarro: So point one, just to summarize what Easy is alluding to, which is where, where does the book of Isaiah fit in the grand narrative of redemptive history?
- 19:24Oscar Navarro: It sits within a Babylonian exile, and it's important to recognize that.
- 19:31Oscar Navarro: As Isaiah writes, as actually all of the authors of the Old Testament wrote, they saw themselves in the context of the Exodus story, and so everything related both back to the Exodus story and it alluded to something looking forward of a new kind of Exodus.
- 19:52Oscar Navarro: And so you almost have like three Exodus stories happening, interwoven with each other.
- 19:57Oscar Navarro: You've got the Exodus story with Moses and God's people from Pharaoh, and then you've got this new Exodus story in which Isaiah and the Jewish people are being exiled to Babylon and they're waiting for a new kind of Exodus where they will return back to the Promised Land, and they're repeating all of the similar sins that were happening in Egypt.
- 20:19Oscar Navarro: People were getting comfortable, they were becoming too much like the culture around them.
- 20:24Oscar Navarro: They weren't living faithfully as exiles to the glory of God.
- 20:28Oscar Navarro: Once they are removed from exile and headed towards the Promised Land, they very quickly forget about the goodness of God and his salvific work in their lives.
- 20:37Oscar Navarro: So he's talking about past tense the Exodus story present tense, the Babylonian story.
- 20:43Oscar Navarro: But he's also talking about a future exile in which we are living post resurrection of Jesus, in which we are living as sojourners and exiles in this world, waiting for the second coming of Christ.
- 20:57Oscar Navarro: And so all of these things are sort of at play in one story, which also leads me to the idea of prophecy.
- 21:05Oscar Navarro: I think, unfortunately, a lot of people think of prophecy as, like this fortune telling.
- 21:13Oscar Navarro: Like you know, there's these codes and so they try to use, like they try to build their own Excel spreadsheets and they try to create a rubric to be able to go look, I've, I've calculated out of the prophetic words and, and here's the, the, the sum total conclusion, whether that's prophetic language towards Jesus or future prophetic language, and that's simply not the way Isaiah or any other prophet would want you to read what they wrote.
- 21:42Oscar Navarro: That's also not the way Christians in the in the New Testament or Jews in the Old Testament would have read prophecy.
- 21:51Oscar Navarro: The biggest clue is they didn't have Excel Right.
- 21:56Oscar Navarro: So step one you're doing something wrong, but more than that, what they saw.
- 22:00Oscar Navarro: Instead of trying to think of prophecy as a rubric, they saw prophecy as a way of understanding the role or the place in which they were in God's redemptive story.
- 22:13Oscar Navarro: And so all of these Old Testament stories are how Christians and Jews would understand their own story.
- 22:23Oscar Navarro: It's it's put it this way the Exodus story is to the New Testament and Old Testament people, what pop culture is to us today.
- 22:33Oscar Navarro: It's how they told their own story.
- 22:35Oscar Navarro: So here's the best example that I can give, and then I'll shut up.
- 22:38Oscar Navarro: In basketball culture, we've got stories and we tell our own stories in the context of basketball stories.
- 22:45Oscar Navarro: So imagine one day you and I are going to go play basketball easy and I say I'm gonna put up 81 on you today easily.
- 22:52Oscar Navarro: But what would that?
- 22:54Oscar Navarro: What would 81?
- 22:55Oscar Navarro: What is, what is the?
- 22:56Oscar Navarro: What do you know what?
- 22:56Oscar Navarro: 81 references in basketball culture?
- 22:59Oscar Navarro: 81 points, kobe Bryant oh, yeah, right.
- 23:02Emeal Zwane: Yeah.
- 23:02Oscar Navarro: So here's the thing if somebody heard me and they misinterpreted my language, they'd be like, oh, that's prophecy.
- 23:10Oscar Navarro: Oscar's gonna put up 81 points against easy.
- 23:12Oscar Navarro: And let's say I don't, I only put up 20.
- 23:14Oscar Navarro: Then they would have to reinterpret.
- 23:16Oscar Navarro: Well, maybe he meant he's gonna, over the sum total of all the games they play, put up 81 points.
- 23:21Oscar Navarro: And then, if they didn't get that, they'd think, oh well, maybe Oscar's Descendants would put up 81 points against easy's descendants.
- 23:27Oscar Navarro: You see, they would be Misinterpreting the language that I was using.
- 23:31Oscar Navarro: What I was trying to do was use Culture to tell a story that I wanted to demolish you.
- 23:36Oscar Navarro: In that same way, the, the authors of prophecy, are using Old Testament language to tell a new story.
- 23:44Oscar Navarro: That's how we have to read prophecy.
- 23:47Oscar Navarro: That's how we should read Isaiah 53.
- 23:49Oscar Navarro: So that's the rubric, that's the narrative.
- 23:52Oscar Navarro: I did not rubric.
- 23:56Ray Comfort: I had to look it up did you codex mark easy you know what rubric is yes, yeah, of course, Oscar.
- 24:01Emeal Zwane: What if I said I was gonna put a hundred on you?
- 24:03Emeal Zwane: What would that be from?
- 24:05Oscar Navarro: that would be Will Chamberlain.
- 24:07Emeal Zwane: Yeah good, all right, enough of that.
- 24:10Emeal Zwane: No good stuff, oscar, thanks for giving us that back.
- 24:13Emeal Zwane: Oh, all right, here we go, isaiah, begin again, again in 52, 13 to 15, and then we'll jump in there.
- 24:19Ray Comfort: You're going to a deep voice about.
- 24:23Emeal Zwane: Behold, my servant shall deal prudently.
- 24:25Emeal Zwane: He shall be exalted and extolled, and very high.
- 24:28Emeal Zwane: Just as many were astonished at you, so his visage was marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men, so shall he sprinkle.
- 24:36Emeal Zwane: Many nations, kings shall shut their mouths at him, for what had not been told, then they shall see, and what they had not heard they shall consider.
- 24:46Emeal Zwane: Now, in dies a, f53, verse 1, who has believed our report and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
- 24:53Emeal Zwane: For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant and as a shoot out of dry ground.
- 24:57Emeal Zwane: He has no form or comeliness, and when we see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
- 25:03Emeal Zwane: He is despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, and we hid, as it were, our faces from him.
- 25:10Emeal Zwane: He was despised and we did not esteem him.
- 25:13Emeal Zwane: Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.
- 25:16Emeal Zwane: Yet we esteemed him.
- 25:18Emeal Zwane: Stricken, smitten by God and afflicted.
- 25:21Emeal Zwane: But he was wounded for our transgressions.
- 25:23Emeal Zwane: He was bruised for our iniquities.
- 25:25Emeal Zwane: The chastisement for our peace was upon him, and by his stripes we are healed.
- 25:31Emeal Zwane: All we, like sheep, have gone astray.
- 25:33Emeal Zwane: We have turned everyone to his own way and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
- 25:39Emeal Zwane: He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth.
- 25:43Emeal Zwane: He was led as a lamb to the slaughter and as a sheep before it shares a silent.
- 25:47Emeal Zwane: So he opened not his mouth.
- 25:49Emeal Zwane: He was taken from prison and from judgment.
- 25:52Emeal Zwane: And who will declare his generation?
- 25:54Emeal Zwane: He was cut off from the land of the living for the transgression of my people.
- 25:59Emeal Zwane: He was stricken and they gave his grave with the wicked, but with the rich at his death, because he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth, yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him.
- 26:11Emeal Zwane: He was put, he has put him to grief when you make his soul an offering for sin.
- 26:16Emeal Zwane: He shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
- 26:22Emeal Zwane: He shall see the labor of his soul and be satisfied by his knowledge.
- 26:26Emeal Zwane: My righteous servant will justify many, for he shall bear their iniquities.
- 26:30Emeal Zwane: Therefore I will divide him a portion with the great and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul unto death and he was numbered with the transgressors and he bore the sin of many and Made intercession for the transgressors.
- 26:46Emeal Zwane: Whoo, how many times do we read that, you know?
- 26:51Emeal Zwane: But still, every time it's filled with so much freshness and I think that deeper mind are of what Christ endured.
- 27:01Emeal Zwane: For us, it's all about the cross.
- 27:04Ray Comfort: Yeah, the horror of the cross.
- 27:05Emeal Zwane: Yeah, and you know, isaiah itself is cited 13 times in the 27 books of the New Testament, and then Isaiah 53 in particular is cited in Matthew, mark, luke, john, acts, romans and 1st Peter, and We've talked about this before.
- 27:23Emeal Zwane: You know, there are some who will look at Old Testament prophecy again, like Isaiah, like Oscar alluded to, and, because of their understanding of how it works, we'll say, oh, no, no, this couldn't have applied to Jesus.
- 27:35Emeal Zwane: But we have to remember that the New Testament, through divine inspiration, validates for us what God placed within the Old Testament pages as a Prophecy.
- 27:45Emeal Zwane: So there's no questioning it, there's no, oh, I wonder.
- 27:47Emeal Zwane: That validates it completely.
- 27:48Emeal Zwane: And so we need to have confidence in that regard and we need to be able to to share this right.
- 27:55Emeal Zwane: Have you ever, in evangelism, shared Isaiah 53 with a Jew?
- 28:00Emeal Zwane: Yeah, and what's been the response?
- 28:02Emeal Zwane: Wonderful From them, I remember.
- 28:07Ray Comfort: I just a video just got up with Reuben, the Jewish math professor.
- 28:11Ray Comfort: Yeah, and we, we talked about it, and we, we talked about it, and I mentioned Isaiah 53 and how it speaks of a man.
- 28:17Ray Comfort: It doesn't speak of the nation of Israel, and he was just saying wow, and this is a Jew saying wow, as I quoted Isaiah and Psalm 2 no, by the way, if you have not listened or if you have not seen that video, I really urge you to go to youtube and look it up.
- 28:33Oscar Navarro: It is really Really good.
- 28:36Oscar Navarro: The man almost begs for salvation at the end of the, at the end of the interview.
- 28:41Emeal Zwane: Yeah it really was one of the best I think you've ever done.
- 28:44Emeal Zwane: Right Now, mark, I want you to jump in on this, but but let's, let's remember what we're told in Luke.
- 28:50Emeal Zwane: This is 24, 25 to 27.
- 28:53Emeal Zwane: This is on the road to Emmaus.
- 28:54Emeal Zwane: So then he said to them oh, foolish ones and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken.
- 28:59Emeal Zwane: Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into his glory?
- 29:04Emeal Zwane: And, beginning at moses and all the prophets, which would include isaac, he expounded to them and all the scriptures of things concerning himself, and then, and verses 44 and 46 through 46 says then he said to them these are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of moses and the prophets and the Psalms Concerning me, and he opened their understanding that they might comprehend the scriptures.
- 29:31Ray Comfort: And they go hop in.
- 29:34Mark Spence: Yeah, the first case of harpern Um Gregory of Nazarene's, this, I don't know if I pronounced that correctly in 83.
- 29:41Mark Spence: In referring to jesus I I sent this to easy.
- 29:45Mark Spence: Earlier today in a text it just stood out to me.
- 29:48Mark Spence: He said now, bear in mind the year is 381.
- 29:52Mark Spence: I like the inside of this.
- 29:53Mark Spence: He said he began his ministry by being hungry, yet he's the bread of life.
- 29:57Mark Spence: And he ended his earthly ministry by being thirsty, yet he is the living water.
- 30:01Mark Spence: Jesus was weary, yet he is our rest.
- 30:04Mark Spence: And jesus paid tribute, yet he's the king.
- 30:08Mark Spence: Jesus was accused of having a demon, yet he cast out demons.
- 30:12Mark Spence: Jesus wept, yet he wipes away our tears.
- 30:16Mark Spence: Jesus was sold for 30 pieces of silver, yet he redeemed the world.
- 30:21Mark Spence: Jesus was brought as a lamb to the slaughter, yet he is the good shepherd.
- 30:25Mark Spence: And jesus died, yet by his death he destroyed the power of death.
- 30:31Mark Spence: Hmm, that is a wall.
- 30:33Ray Comfort: No, yeah, that's 381.
- 30:36Emeal Zwane: Oh, that's so good.
- 30:37Emeal Zwane: Uh, I love what james on gummery boys said.
- 30:39Emeal Zwane: He said the cross stands as the focal point of the christian faith.
- 30:43Emeal Zwane: Without the cross, the bible is an enigma and the gospel of salvation is an empty hope.
- 30:47Emeal Zwane: Yeah, it all goes back to the cross and I think that you know, like paul said, I, you know, I knew nothing among you except jesus christ and him crucified.
- 30:57Emeal Zwane: You know that, that heartbeat behind what fuels us as believers, recognizing that it all revolved around the cross, that was the, the, the pinnacle of all of god's Redemptive history.
- 31:12Emeal Zwane: You know for mankind that that was laid out ahead of time, and and he did that.
- 31:16Emeal Zwane: You know for us, and so you know what I'd like to do.
- 31:19Emeal Zwane: Piper, uh, john piper, broke it down one, one pipe, yeah, that's.
- 31:24Emeal Zwane: He broke down, uh, isaia 53, and I want us to just look at each little point here and just talk about it.
- 31:32Emeal Zwane: So first he talked about the.
- 31:34Emeal Zwane: The servant, uh, the servant, he said, knew the purposes of the lord.
- 31:39Emeal Zwane: He said in the middle of verse 11, it says by his knowledge, the righteous one, my servant, will justify the many.
- 31:45Emeal Zwane: Why?
- 31:46Emeal Zwane: Why does by his, what does by his knowledge mean?
- 31:49Emeal Zwane: It means that the first work of the servant was a work of knowing.
- 31:52Emeal Zwane: It means that the servant was not taken off guard by the will of the lord to crush him.
- 31:56Emeal Zwane: He knew it and he agreed with it.
- 31:58Emeal Zwane: So, guys, we know in Gethsemane Jesus was Crying out to the father if there's any way, this cup can pass from me but ultimately we know that was Christ kind of manifesting, you know, the realities of the cross that was coming and the wrath of God that he was going to bear and the separation from the Father, whatever that really means.
- 32:23Emeal Zwane: It's hard for us to fully comprehend it.
- 32:24Emeal Zwane: But he knew, he had knowledge that that was his mission.
- 32:27Emeal Zwane: He was born so that he might die and so let's just talk about that a little bit.
- 32:35Emeal Zwane: I mean every episode that we see in Scripture.
- 32:39Emeal Zwane: Christ was aware of the fact he was going to Christ.
- 32:41Emeal Zwane: In fact he would tell the disciples and they didn't understand it.
- 32:45Emeal Zwane: They were detached from it.
- 32:48Oscar Navarro: He was born knowing that he might die.
- 32:50Oscar Navarro: That's really good.
- 32:52Oscar Navarro: And I think, isaiah, what you see Isaiah do is that he alludes to Abraham and Isaac here in these last chapters.
- 33:01Oscar Navarro: This is amazing.
- 33:02Oscar Navarro: This is from a book that I have found to be very helpful, by James Hamilton in typology, understanding the Bible's promise shape pattern.
- 33:11Oscar Navarro: So he points out, he says and if you notice, in Genesis 22, verse one God calls on Abraham.
- 33:18Oscar Navarro: Abraham replies here I am.
- 33:21Oscar Navarro: And Genesis 22, verse seven Isaac calls on Abraham, abraham replies here I am.
- 33:28Oscar Navarro: Genesis 22, 11, the angel of the Lord calls on Abraham.
- 33:32Oscar Navarro: Abraham replies here I am.
- 33:35Oscar Navarro: And then he points out in Isaiah 52, verse six so just before 53, it says this therefore, my people will know my name.
- 33:44Oscar Navarro: Therefore, on that day, they will know that I am the one who says here I am.
- 33:50Oscar Navarro: He goes on to say that, when joined with the other pointers to the narratives of Abraham and Isaac, in the immediate context this statement seems to be saying Yahweh telling his people that he will play the role of the Father in Genesis 22 narratives, saying as Abraham did here I am.
- 34:09Oscar Navarro: In other words, what Isaiah is pointing out is that Jesus is the better Isaac, in that Isaac was spared, but Jesus would not be spared.
- 34:21Oscar Navarro: His blood would be spilled.
- 34:23Oscar Navarro: The one and only Son, the precious one.
- 34:26Oscar Navarro: His blood would be spilled for the salvation of the people.
- 34:32Emeal Zwane: And Ray, I'd love you to just comment on this for a moment.
- 34:34Emeal Zwane: Jesus said no one takes my life from me.
- 34:37Emeal Zwane: I willingly lay it down.
- 34:40Emeal Zwane: I mean the willingness of Christ to do what he did for us.
- 34:45Ray Comfort: Yeah, which is the essence of servanthood.
- 34:48Ray Comfort: He was an absolute servant.
- 34:49Ray Comfort: Behold my servant, god says.
- 34:52Ray Comfort: And when Jesus was baptized it was so.
- 34:55Ray Comfort: God, if I may say this, couldn't hold back his joy and saying this is my beloved Son and whom I am well pleased.
- 35:03Ray Comfort: And I often look at the words of Jesus where he said I always do those things that please him.
- 35:09Ray Comfort: What human being could say that there's nothing we do that can please God?
- 35:13Ray Comfort: Even our righteous Deedra is filthy rags in his sight.
- 35:16Ray Comfort: And here was the willing servant who came to lay down his own will and do the will of the Father not my will, but yours be done for our redemption.
- 35:26Emeal Zwane: Yeah, mark, oftentimes we forget that the servanthood of Christ was tied to his crucifixion.
- 35:32Emeal Zwane: I mean even Scripture says.
- 35:34Emeal Zwane: I mean he did not come to serve, but to serve and to give his life are ransom for many, even in Hebrews, where it talks about the humility of Christ.
- 35:46Emeal Zwane: He took the form of a bond servant, coming in the license of men and became obedient, even to the point of death.
- 35:50Emeal Zwane: So I mean that's his service toward us.
- 35:54Mark Spence: Yeah, and that's the picture of humility and meekness all wrapped up into one.
- 35:58Mark Spence: You know, when we read Isaiah 53, we see the suffering that is foretold of the Messiah to come.
- 36:04Mark Spence: And I was reading a commentary earlier and he was talking about Jesus being called the man of sorrows because of how much suffering he had to endure, and he broke it down into three different sections and because of time we won't be able to get into all this.
- 36:18Mark Spence: But he brings out the fact that he first left the glories of heaven and he entered the human race as a man.
- 36:24Mark Spence: This is what is known as the incarnation and, as the old hymn says, the Creator had woven himself a robe of virgin flesh.
- 36:34Mark Spence: Wow, what picturesque language that is put on there, right?
- 36:38Mark Spence: Yeah, cs Lewis said the central miracle asserted by Christians is the incarnation.
- 36:43Mark Spence: They say that God became a man, and that flies in the face of all the other religions.
- 36:49Mark Spence: Right, because religions are filled with man's desire to want to either elevate themselves to God or how man is God himself.
- 36:58Mark Spence: But Christianity is how God became a man and this is, according to the commentator, the first act of suffering that Jesus endured as he became one of us.
- 37:10Mark Spence: Right?
- 37:12Mark Spence: And the second point he said was he suffered all the things that humanity suffers.
- 37:16Mark Spence: He suffered rejection, he suffered hunger and thirst, he suffered temptation when he was out in the wilderness for the 40 days, he was misunderstood and he was accused of being demon possessed.
- 37:29Mark Spence: Right.
- 37:29Mark Spence: So he understands the suffering that we will go through.
- 37:33Mark Spence: He understands the temptations that we experience.
- 37:36Mark Spence: And then, finally, thirdly, he suffered the wrath of God as the sin bearer.
- 37:42Mark Spence: And we talk to non-Christians all the time about the implications of this.
- 37:48Mark Spence: If you do not turn to Christ in faith and realize that the wrath of the Father came down upon the Son and in so doing, it satisfied the demands of the law, or you got to do it yourself.
- 37:58Mark Spence: Well, what does that mean?
- 38:00Mark Spence: To do it yourself?
- 38:01Mark Spence: And the commentator went on to say every sinful action that man commits is being stored in a celestial drawer that will come out on judgment day, and when God puts his hand on that knob and opens that door, you will fall to the ground.
- 38:19Mark Spence: That's good, I mean.
- 38:21Mark Spence: Well, that's like that.
- 38:22Mark Spence: Right, there is picturesque.
- 38:23Mark Spence: And that is a scary, scary thought, because every idol word, man speaks.
- 38:27Mark Spence: You have to give him a camera.
- 38:29Oscar Navarro: I love the opening of that, in the sense that it's so important to realize that Jesus suffered greatly and, to your point, I mean, I think, one of the most telling things too, because people often don't want to talk about the wrath of God, they don't want to talk about the reality of hell, and you alluded to the undeniable fact that you must talk about it because, to your point, jesus suffered but he did not say my God, my God, take this starvation from me.
- 38:56Oscar Navarro: He did not say take these nails from me.
- 39:00Oscar Navarro: He did not say take this crown of thorns.
- 39:02Oscar Navarro: He did not say take this cross.
- 39:03Oscar Navarro: He said take this cup.
- 39:05Oscar Navarro: What cup was he talking about?
- 39:08Oscar Navarro: All throughout the Old Testament, the cup is a representation of the fullness of the wrath of God, in other words, the one out of all of the suffering that Jesus experienced.
- 39:18Oscar Navarro: The one thing that his focus, his primary focus, was on was the wrath of God.
- 39:24Oscar Navarro: That was the greatest of suffering that Jesus was going to take on, which means his death is not just a symbolic representation of love and sacrifice.
- 39:34Oscar Navarro: It is a substitutionary atonement.
- 39:38Oscar Navarro: He took on the fullness of the wrath of God.
- 39:42Oscar Navarro: He who knew no sin became sin so that we sinners could experience and live within his righteousness.
- 39:50Mark Spence: Let me comment on that.
- 39:51Mark Spence: I absolutely love that Our friend is over at G-3, Josh Beis he wrote an article.
- 39:58Oscar Navarro: I have been saying Beis this whole time.
- 40:00Oscar Navarro: It is Beis.
- 40:04Mark Spence: He wrote an article on the wrath of God that is found over at their website, g3menorg.
- 40:09Mark Spence: This is what he said concerning the wrath of God.
- 40:12Mark Spence: He said in some circles today, the love of God is elevated above the wrath of God with clear emphasis.
- 40:18Mark Spence: That is a tragic mistake.
- 40:20Mark Spence: It does not reveal the true nature and revelation of God as he has put on display in the pages of Scripture.
- 40:26Mark Spence: We must be balanced and true to what God's word actually states.
- 40:30Mark Spence: God is not a loose cannon losing his temper with people.
- 40:34Mark Spence: God's wrath is not a reckless rage, an uncontrollable anger, a senseless fury or an unjust vengeance.
- 40:43Mark Spence: The wrath of God is a precise and controlled response to the belittling of his holiness.
- 40:50Mark Spence: Everyone who perishes under the wrath of God in eternity will not be because God lost his temper with them and mistreated them.
- 41:00Mark Spence: On that day, everyone will know that God has treated them with precise justice.
- 41:05Mark Spence: Three trillion years into eternity, every sinner who is cast into hell will still know that God has never mistreated anyone.
- 41:16Mark Spence: I applaud.
- 41:19Emeal Zwane: Josh for that.
- 41:19Emeal Zwane: Wow, that is really powerful, ray.
- 41:23Emeal Zwane: The second point that John Piper highlights is the servant poured out himself to death.
- 41:28Emeal Zwane: I will emphasize his death there.
- 41:32Emeal Zwane: You talk often about death and how people are held captive by it all their lives and you know, we know we're going to die.
- 41:41Emeal Zwane: But think of Christ, who is the eternal God, knowing that he's going to experience something that in reality is an impossibility for God to experience right in the fullness of his essence.
- 41:54Emeal Zwane: He was coming to die.
- 41:55Emeal Zwane: I mean, the thought of that is mind-blowing.
- 42:00Emeal Zwane: Don't you tie that ultimately to his love for us, that he'd be willing to do that?
- 42:05Ray Comfort: You can't separate his love from the cross.
- 42:08Ray Comfort: When we minister the love of God, it's so important to preach it in the context of the cross.
- 42:14Ray Comfort: So many comments.
- 42:15Ray Comfort: People say, like you're on YouTube channel, you're just unloving.
- 42:19Ray Comfort: And the goodness of God brings us to repentance.
- 42:22Ray Comfort: I like to say check out that verse in Romans, chapter two, where it speaks of the goodness of God brings us to repentance.
- 42:28Ray Comfort: It's sandwiched in wrath.
- 42:30Ray Comfort: Paul is speaking wrath-filled words when he mentions that and it's God's grace and his goodness that draws us.
- 42:36Ray Comfort: I love what a preacher once said, talking about Jesus suffering on the cross and then rising from the dead and victory over death.
- 42:43Ray Comfort: And Harry kicked over the throne of Satan, snatched the keys from him and said behold, I'm he that lives and was dead, and I'm alive forevermore and have the keys to death and hell.
- 42:53Ray Comfort: Just looking at verse three, where it says we hit, as it were, our faces from him, speaking of humanity hating the light, and when you hide your face, you don't want it in your vision.
- 43:07Ray Comfort: Get out of my peripheral, which reminded me.
- 43:12Emeal Zwane: I know exactly where you're going.
- 43:14Ray Comfort: Brian Reagan, walking through the stand-up community, walking through the first class, and looking at people who have got their little laptops and they're saying I'm making money right now, right now.
- 43:24Ray Comfort: And he says right now, bring me the head of a pig or something.
- 43:28Ray Comfort: And then he says, get out of my peripheral because we're the riffraff going through first class.
- 43:33Ray Comfort: And he says, get behind that curtain and pull that curtain across.
- 43:36Ray Comfort: And that's how people are with Jesus.
- 43:38Ray Comfort: They don't want to talk about them, they want to think about them.
- 43:40Ray Comfort: He's not in their thoughts, they hide their faces from them, and it's because of the guilt of this sin.
- 43:46Oscar Navarro: Wow, although the way you put it easy and it's actually what you just said is this stumbling block was and still is the stumbling block for so many Jewish people it's the idea that a God, that God, would die.
- 44:00Oscar Navarro: That was the thing that was.
- 44:02Oscar Navarro: So you know this.
- 44:03Oscar Navarro: This idea that God dies is a scandalous idea.
- 44:07Ray Comfort: Same with Muslim Muslim they're offended.
- 44:09Oscar Navarro: That's exactly right.
- 44:10Oscar Navarro: It's this great scandal that feels unimaginable.
- 44:15Oscar Navarro: And yet it's the beauty.
- 44:18Oscar Navarro: It is scandal, it is a scandalous act.
- 44:20Oscar Navarro: It is the beauty and the reality of the gospel.
- 44:22Oscar Navarro: I love the way.
- 44:23Oscar Navarro: One of my favorite books on church history I know I've quoted it before on this podcast Bruce Shelley's book church history and plain language, the opening line to the book, which is one of the best openers I've ever read Christianity is the only major religion to have at its central event the humiliation of its God.
- 44:42Oscar Navarro: Wow.
- 44:42Oscar Navarro: And it's that's a reality.
- 44:45Oscar Navarro: That's the scandal that holds people so many back.
- 44:47Oscar Navarro: We get it.
- 44:48Oscar Navarro: It is a scandalous act, and yet it's also the most loving act that's ever been done.
- 44:54Emeal Zwane: Yeah, I mean, it flies in the face of everything this world stands for.
- 44:58Emeal Zwane: It's so counterintuitive.
- 44:59Emeal Zwane: You know, yesterday I came across a video of an interview back in, I think, 1959 with the novelist Anne Rand as she wrote the book Atlas Shrugged.
- 45:12Emeal Zwane: What a wicked, evil woman.
- 45:14Oscar Navarro: Let me just say that that book when I was in the financial industry, that book was so popular, yeah it was like the book to read.
- 45:21Emeal Zwane: Yeah, she's a very wicked woman.
- 45:23Emeal Zwane: And basically she was saying she's creating a new philosophy and saying that this whole concept of altruism, of laying your life down for other people, it's a bunch of nonsense.
- 45:36Emeal Zwane: And I think it was Wallace.
- 45:39Emeal Zwane: He was interviewing her and he said to her he said what are you talking about?
- 45:43Emeal Zwane: Back in that day, right, that people had some sanity compared to today.
- 45:47Emeal Zwane: And he goes to her this is the foundation of our culture.
- 45:52Emeal Zwane: And he talked to her about Christ.
- 45:54Emeal Zwane: He said based on the teachings of Christ, that we lay our lives down, we love people, we give our lives away for others and basically she went on this rant about how only people who deserve love should be given love.
- 46:07Emeal Zwane: I mean, this stuff was insane.
- 46:08Emeal Zwane: This book sold like 10 million copies.
- 46:10Emeal Zwane: One of the biggest selling books of all time, but it flies again in the face of the world.
- 46:16Emeal Zwane: It goes against everything the world stands for.
- 46:19Emeal Zwane: But this shows all the more the wicked, sinful, fallen nature of man.
- 46:25Emeal Zwane: It's all about self versus a life that's given over to serve others.
- 46:31Mark Spence: I want to quickly read a hymn that I was listening to earlier today by Philip Bliss.
- 46:36Mark Spence: He was from 1838 to 1876.
- 46:39Mark Spence: He was an American hymnist, composer evangelist and teacher.
- 46:42Mark Spence: He was also a contemporary of DL Moody in Fanny Crosby.
- 46:47Mark Spence: So the hymn goes like this man of Sorrows, what a name for the Son of God who came ruined sinners to reclaim Alleluia.
- 46:57Mark Spence: What a savior.
- 46:58Mark Spence: Bearing shame and scoffing rud in my place, condemned he stood, sealed, my pardon, with his blood.
- 47:04Mark Spence: Hallelujah, what a savior.
- 47:06Mark Spence: Guilty, vile and helpless, we spotless Lamb of God, was he full atonement?
- 47:13Mark Spence: Can it be?
- 47:14Mark Spence: Hallelujah, what a savior.
- 47:16Mark Spence: Lifted up, was he to die?
- 47:18Mark Spence: It is finished.
- 47:19Mark Spence: Was his cry now in heaven, exalted high?
- 47:23Mark Spence: Hallelujah, what a savior.
- 47:25Mark Spence: And when he comes, our glorious King, all his ransomed home, to bring then anew this song, will sing Hallelujah, what a savior.
- 47:37Emeal Zwane: Wow, that's so good.
- 47:39Emeal Zwane: Wow, what a great place to end.
- 47:42Emeal Zwane: Mark, you know we can't go through all that pipe or laid out here.
- 47:46Emeal Zwane: Talk about the servant bore the sins of many.
- 47:47Emeal Zwane: The servant rose from the dead.
- 47:48Emeal Zwane: The servant interceded for transgressors.
- 47:51Emeal Zwane: The servant justifies as people servant bears the offspring and his death and resurrection and divides the booty with the strong.
- 47:58Emeal Zwane: But there's so much there.
- 48:00Emeal Zwane: I mean how we really should have done like four episodes on this.
- 48:04Emeal Zwane: But, mark, that was so good and I hope that that we keep what Christ did at the very center.
- 48:11Emeal Zwane: I D A Carson put it well.
- 48:13Emeal Zwane: He said I fear that the cross, without ever being disowned, is constantly in danger of being dismissed from the central place it must enjoy by relatively peripheral insights that take on far too much weight Whenever the periphery is in danger of displacing the center.
- 48:32Emeal Zwane: We are not far removed from idolatry.
- 48:34Emeal Zwane: So may we keep the cross the center.
- 48:37Emeal Zwane: May we recognize that what happened with Jesus was not accidental.
- 48:42Emeal Zwane: It was a preordained plan of God.
- 48:44Emeal Zwane: It is the very basis for our redemption, and may we continually proclaim the cross.
- 48:52Emeal Zwane: May we lift up Jesus as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness so that he, through his death, as Isaiah prophesied, would draw all men unto himself.
- 49:01Emeal Zwane: Well, there you have it, friends.
- 49:04Emeal Zwane: Another one for the history books.
- 49:07Ray Comfort: Boy, I thought there's going to be no silliness after you just said all that.
- 49:11Emeal Zwane: No, I think we can do a little bit of that.
