- 0:12Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:16Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I'm Lazarre and Lazarre. Hello, everybody nailed it? Joined has
- 0:21Speaker 2: always buy our gait match.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bars The math coaches,
- 0:31Speaker 1: whether it be in football, whether it be in basketball,
- 0:34Speaker 1: certainly happens a lot in baseball. Ye refuse to adjust
- 0:38Speaker 1: from their strategy because the spreadsheet tells them this is
- 0:41Speaker 1: what you need to do to win the game. The
- 0:43Speaker 1: spreadsheet was created before the game, not when you're up
- 0:46Speaker 1: twenty points in the third quarter or two touchdowns in
- 0:49Speaker 1: the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl. But they continue
- 0:51Speaker 1: to go bombs away when really, all you gotta do
- 0:54Speaker 1: with this big lead is just run out the clock.
- 0:57Speaker 1: And it's maybe not mathematically sexy, but it's how you're
- 1:00Speaker 1: gonna win the game. That's my big problem. Just go
- 1:03Speaker 1: to paint. But no, Kyle Shanahan has to Jimmy Garoffolo
- 1:06Speaker 1: throw the ball deep in the fourth quarter of the
- 1:07Speaker 1: Super Bowl up team scores because that's what the map says.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Strats killed me.
- 1:12Speaker 2: It always comes back to that. With always, it always
- 1:15Speaker 2: comes back to Kyle Shanahan being minutes away from like
- 1:20Speaker 2: three time Super Bowl champion to zero time Super Bowl champion.
- 1:26Speaker 2: That's where it always comes, sixty minute game. No matter
- 1:29Speaker 2: what we do, it always comes back to that. Evan Lazar,
- 1:32Speaker 2: Alex Barth, Patriots Catch twenty two with you for a
- 1:35Speaker 2: couple of hours here on schedule release day. The schedule
- 1:39Speaker 2: will be released tonight eight o'clock. It is a marquee event,
- 1:43Speaker 2: because obviously with the NFL, what isn't a marquee event.
- 1:47Speaker 2: I'll just say off the top, schedule leaks, we're not
- 1:50Speaker 2: gonna touch on those. I know there's a lot of
- 1:53Speaker 2: things floating around social media right now, but we're just
- 1:56Speaker 2: gonna stick to the facts on this show and on
- 1:59Speaker 2: probably all of our So we're not going to sit
- 2:02Speaker 2: here and guess which leaks are accurate and which leaks
- 2:06Speaker 2: are not accurate and all that good stuff. So as
- 2:09Speaker 2: the schedule comes out tonight and then tomorrow on PU
- 2:13Speaker 2: we'll talk plenty about the schedule, and you'll be on
- 2:16Speaker 2: the Sports Hub, I'm sure, talking about the schedule and
- 2:18Speaker 2: all that good stuff. So you'll get our schedule reacts
- 2:21Speaker 2: in due time. But for today's show, we're going to
- 2:24Speaker 2: focus on Rookie Mini Camp. I know it's been a
- 2:27Speaker 2: minute since we were out at Rookie Mini Camp, but
- 2:29Speaker 2: it's our first show since Rookie Mini Camp, so we'll
- 2:32Speaker 2: discuss that. We'll discuss the defensive side of the ball.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Do our roster reset on defense. Have a few things
- 2:38Speaker 2: I wanted to bring up there, and I know that
- 2:41Speaker 2: people are going to call an email in about the schedule,
- 2:43Speaker 2: so I'm sure we'll give some takes about our theories
- 2:47Speaker 2: about the schedule. But before we really get into it,
- 2:50Speaker 2: support the home team. Join New England's events staff here
- 2:53Speaker 2: at Jiled Stadium. Seasonal position. Seasonal positions available in food

- 3:07Speaker 2: Alex Well, I've had a worlwind of a couple of days.
- 3:10Speaker 2: As you can imagine, this has been a whirlwind of
- 3:13Speaker 2: emotions for your boy over here. Monday night, I was
- 3:17Speaker 2: at the Kendrick Lamar concert. I had a great time
- 3:19Speaker 2: with Jess at the Kendrick Lamark concert. He was fantastic.
- 3:22Speaker 2: He hit it out of the park. He played every
- 3:25Speaker 2: song that I wanted him to play. And I was
- 3:27Speaker 2: very excited about it. I mean, from top to bottom,
- 3:31Speaker 2: I just thought, Yeah, that is exactly what all of
- 3:35Speaker 2: us Kendrick fans wanted. I was a little concerned that
- 3:37Speaker 2: he was going to lean too much into the Drake
- 3:39Speaker 2: stuff like he kind of did on the Super Bowl
- 3:41Speaker 2: halftime show, and it was going to be too much
- 3:44Speaker 2: of a you know, an FU tour to Drake. But
- 3:46Speaker 2: it wasn't. He played a lot of his og hits.
- 3:49Speaker 2: It was fantastic. And then as I'm walking out of
- 3:52Speaker 2: the Kendrick Lamark concert, uh, you know, I'm looking at
- 3:55Speaker 2: my phone and Jason Tatum no longer has an achilles,
- 3:58Speaker 2: so you know, it was like the highest the highs
- 4:01Speaker 2: that you could go for to the lowest of lows.
- 4:04Speaker 2: So that was I will admit right now, I am
- 4:07Speaker 2: in seven stages of grief. And so we're gonna talk
- 4:11Speaker 2: about Patriots for the next two hours to totally ignore
- 4:15Speaker 2: all my emotions and feelings about the Celtics right now.
- 4:19Speaker 2: But the one little thing I have to say is
- 4:21Speaker 2: to get off my chest. The only to make this
- 4:24Speaker 2: Patriot related a Brady is the only thing I can
- 4:28Speaker 2: think of. It rises this to this level in our
- 4:31Speaker 2: you know time as sports fans slash reporters. I mean,
- 4:34Speaker 2: there's no other injury in Boston sports history during my
- 4:37Speaker 2: lifetime where the superstar player of the team goes down
- 4:42Speaker 2: with such a major injury that might wipe out an
- 4:44Speaker 2: entire season of his prime. It really feels a lot
- 4:48Speaker 2: like a Brady to me. And there's a lot of
- 4:49Speaker 2: parallels there are.
- 4:50Speaker 1: You know, they were coming off of a historical season
- 4:54Speaker 1: in the context of the league, and you know, had
- 4:56Speaker 1: this super team built, and it's it's a significant injury
- 5:01Speaker 1: and an acl back then, And it sounds crazy saying
- 5:04Speaker 1: back then, this is what fifteen almost twenty years ago
- 5:06Speaker 1: now was a lot more significant, held a lot more
- 5:10Speaker 1: long term implications than it does now, kind of like
- 5:13Speaker 1: an Achilles does now. And obviously, and it's it's a
- 5:17Speaker 1: good parallel. Even though I was texting a buddy that
- 5:19Speaker 1: night who said I was being dramatic bringing that up,
- 5:21Speaker 1: but I was.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Your buddy in the denial stage of the seven stages,
- 5:25Speaker 2: agreed as.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Much as I tried to tell him that he was
- 5:28Speaker 1: being a little too positivem But no, there are a
- 5:31Speaker 1: ton of similarities. And I've actually been kind of looking
- 5:34Speaker 1: into you know, reading stories from around that time, and look,
- 5:37Speaker 1: we all know what happened. Brady came back. It took
- 5:39Speaker 1: a while, but he wins four more Super Bowls three
- 5:41Speaker 1: year cemented his status as the greatest player in the
- 5:44Speaker 1: history of the sport. But at the time there was
- 5:48Speaker 1: a lot of uncertainty. People didn't know. It was like,
- 5:51Speaker 1: are we gonna blow this core up? Is Brady gonna
- 5:53Speaker 1: play with Moss again? What's gonna happen here? Matt Castle
- 5:56Speaker 1: leads him to eleven wins. Now it's well, you know,
- 5:58Speaker 1: we don't.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Know who Brady's at, what happens and just will he
- 6:02Speaker 2: ever be the same player again?
- 6:03Speaker 1: Or is this the beginning of the end? And is
- 6:06Speaker 1: that run that we got with him? Is that going
- 6:09Speaker 1: to be it? And it was, which should have been
- 6:11Speaker 1: a long career cut short. Obviously that's not what happened,
- 6:14Speaker 1: But these were some of the questions at the time,
- 6:16Speaker 1: and even Brady himself going back and reading some of
- 6:19Speaker 1: the quotes from him, not immediately after, but later on,
- 6:22Speaker 1: talking about how that changed the way he viewed football
- 6:27Speaker 1: and his interaction with football and a lot of the
- 6:30Speaker 1: stuff that he became very well known for. The TV
- 6:33Speaker 1: twelve method, pliability, avocado ice cream, not eating tomatoes right,
- 6:37Speaker 1: all of that. The genesis of a lot of that
- 6:40Speaker 1: is that injury in two thousand and eight.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Well, you're human, right for the first time, and it's
- 6:47Speaker 2: not it's not exactly apples to apples because Brady won
- 6:50Speaker 2: three and Jason Tatum's only won one. But if you
- 6:52Speaker 2: go back to that moment, right, if you go back
- 6:55Speaker 2: to that moment, it's very similar, very similar stages of
- 6:58Speaker 2: their careers. You know, was Brady's eighth year as the
- 7:01Speaker 2: Patriots starter, Tatum's eighth year in the NBA right now,
- 7:06Speaker 2: you know, both in the primes of their careers. Both
- 7:08Speaker 2: arguably one of the best players in the sport, if
- 7:10Speaker 2: not the best player in the sport in Brady's case.
- 7:13Speaker 2: So it's it's very similar.
- 7:16Speaker 1: So I think if you're Jason Tatum, you go back
- 7:18Speaker 1: and you look at some of the ways Tom Brady
- 7:20Speaker 1: approached that or even maybe reach out to him. And again,
- 7:23Speaker 1: Brady talked about how it changed the way he approached
- 7:25Speaker 1: the game, and it'll be interesting to see how Tatum
- 7:27Speaker 1: attacks it and if he brings that similar mentality.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's the more I looked into it, because
- 7:34Speaker 2: I did want to bring it to Patriot Focus. This
- 7:37Speaker 2: is a Patriots podcast. The more I looked into it,
- 7:41Speaker 2: even though Brady was a little bit older, and you know,
- 7:42Speaker 2: there's different age brackets in terms of primes when they're
- 7:46Speaker 2: an NFL quarterback versus a superstar player in the NBA.
- 7:50Speaker 2: You know, Brady was thirty thirty one when he tore
- 7:52Speaker 2: his ACL. Jason Tatum's only twenty seven. But you know,
- 7:55Speaker 2: Jason Tatum came into the league at eighteen, nineteen years old,
- 7:58Speaker 2: and Brady was older. So the amount of time that
- 8:01Speaker 2: they had spent in the league at that point was
- 8:03Speaker 2: exactly the same.
- 8:04Speaker 1: You know, Yeah, taking out two.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Thousand for Brady, so eight years is the starter eight
- 8:09Speaker 2: year career so far for Jason Tatum. You know, we thought,
- 8:14Speaker 2: I are just remembering my you know, kind of jogging
- 8:17Speaker 2: my memory of eight It was all about righting the
- 8:22Speaker 2: wrong of losing Super Bowl forty nine. Like that's really
- 8:25Speaker 2: what the focus was was, Okay, you went eighteen and oh,
- 8:28Speaker 2: you went sixteen to oh in the regular season, Like
- 8:31Speaker 2: no one wanted them really to try to do that again.
- 8:33Speaker 2: They just wanted to win it right again and would
- 8:36Speaker 2: just focus on winning the Super Bowl, and they had
- 8:39Speaker 2: by far were the betting favorites, and this was I
- 8:43Speaker 2: think the difference is to me that that makes this
- 8:46Speaker 2: one almost in some ways, you know, tougher is that
- 8:50Speaker 2: it kind of feels like two seasons are now impacted
- 8:52Speaker 2: by this Tatum thing because even though they were gonna
- 8:55Speaker 2: they were going down three to one no matter what.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Ye they were gonna lose Game four to the Knicks,
- 8:58Speaker 2: and they're gonna go down three one, no matter or what.
- 9:01Speaker 2: But crazier things have happened than the favorite with two
- 9:04Speaker 2: home games coming back from a three to one deficit
- 9:07Speaker 2: to win the series. So this season is now basically
- 9:10Speaker 2: over all intents and purposes, and then next season might
- 9:14Speaker 2: basically be over too because he might not play at
- 9:16Speaker 2: all in twenty twenty six. Whereas you know with Brady,
- 9:20Speaker 2: it was like, all right, the eight seasons a watch,
- 9:22Speaker 2: but Week one two thousand and nine, we know Brady's
- 9:24Speaker 2: gonna be out, Yeah.
- 9:25Speaker 1: And well, and then there's again that so next year
- 9:30Speaker 1: we'll see. Look, they still Jaylen Brown. I don't think
- 9:33Speaker 1: they're moving on from Jaylen Brown. I don't think they're
- 9:35Speaker 1: moving on from Derek White. So in the East is
- 9:38Speaker 1: it's terrible. It's really bad teams, right, Yeah, Like think
- 9:44Speaker 1: about how bad they'd have to be to not even
- 9:46Speaker 1: be in the playing in this conference. So they'll still
- 9:48Speaker 1: be decent, But like, what does the future look like
- 9:51Speaker 1: after that? This the roster's going to turn over next
- 9:53Speaker 1: time we see Jason Tatum on the floor, Yeah, it's
- 9:56Speaker 1: gonna be I would say more than fifty percent of
- 9:58Speaker 1: the roster is gonna be different. Who knows what the
- 10:00Speaker 1: coaching staff will look like all of that. So with Brady,
- 10:04Speaker 1: it was kind of the same thing where they hit
- 10:06Speaker 1: that breaking point and what happened was they used that
- 10:12Speaker 1: I don't know that that was solely the opportunity. Some
- 10:14Speaker 1: of it was just the time. And look, they obviously
- 10:16Speaker 1: get back to the super Bowl in twenty eleven, so
- 10:18Speaker 1: it was a little more of a drawn aut process
- 10:20Speaker 1: as it is in football compared to basketball. That's kind
- 10:23Speaker 1: of the demarcation of Brady being the young kid who
- 10:27Speaker 1: was on the rise, who was taking this roster of
- 10:30Speaker 1: veterans and maximizing things too. It really being the Tom
- 10:34Speaker 1: Brady Show, and he was the veteran and he was
- 10:37Speaker 1: the guy and everybody's looking up to him. This is
- 10:40Speaker 1: kind of the same opportunity for Tatum. It was Tatum's team,
- 10:43Speaker 1: Don't get me wrong, it was Tatum's team, but you
- 10:45Speaker 1: still had Al Horford and Drew Holiday as those veteran leaders,
- 10:48Speaker 1: and he was still I don't want to say like
- 10:50Speaker 1: up and coming. We knew who he was, but he
- 10:52Speaker 1: was considered like one of the younger superstars in the game.
- 10:55Speaker 1: He's coming back as like the veteran get on my back.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Here we go. It's you know, old head Jason Tatum
- 11:03Speaker 1: leading this group of young, younger players. I think that's
- 11:06Speaker 1: what it's gonna be when it comes back, which it
- 11:08Speaker 1: was for Brady. Right the twenty ten, twenty eleven drafts,
- 11:10Speaker 1: you get two thousand and nine, you get Edelman, Gronk, Slater, mccordy,
- 11:15Speaker 1: like that whole thing, the other tight end. That's what
- 11:18Speaker 1: I think the Celtics need to do here in the
- 11:20Speaker 1: next two years is have that kind of transformation like
- 11:23Speaker 1: the Patriots did in the early twenty tens.
- 11:25Speaker 2: So the last thing I'll say about this, because I
- 11:27Speaker 2: know people are probably some people hate when we talk
- 11:29Speaker 2: about other sports on this show, so I'll just wrap
- 11:31Speaker 2: it up with this today is where we went from
- 11:35Speaker 2: denial last night was depression.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Finally to acceptance.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Last night was depression.
- 11:40Speaker 1: What's your hobby? By the way, like flat.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I told Alex that I was going to pick up
- 11:43Speaker 2: a new hobby because I just I still think anymore
- 11:47Speaker 2: at flat out depression last night anger slash depression. Today
- 11:51Speaker 2: is is acceptance slash? What's the word?
- 11:56Speaker 1: Just? Moving? Moving forward?
- 11:57Speaker 3: No?
- 11:57Speaker 1: But do we do now?
- 11:59Speaker 2: Just like ridiculous overconfidence that he's gonna come back sooner
- 12:03Speaker 2: than I think you're gonna be over.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Confident about anything. It should be the Celtics still winning
- 12:06Speaker 1: the season.
- 12:07Speaker 2: No, I'm not over confident. I'm not any sort of confidence.
- 12:09Speaker 2: I think there's a better chance maybe, but not.
- 12:11Speaker 1: I think there's a better chance the Celtics win this
- 12:13Speaker 1: series than there is of Tatum coming back, like to
- 12:16Speaker 1: play a meaningful game six season.
- 12:18Speaker 2: So I this is why I disagree with you a
- 12:20Speaker 2: little bit. And this is totally cope, totally green team
- 12:23Speaker 2: or cope. But the green teamer take right now, I'll
- 12:28Speaker 2: say put it to you that way. He had the
- 12:31Speaker 2: surgery right away. Yeah, And a big reason why he
- 12:34Speaker 2: had the surgery right away is because it's like the quickest.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Path it's supposed to help recovery yet back.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Now, everybody says you miss a calendar year, but there
- 12:43Speaker 2: are guys that have come back quicker. He is twenty seven,
- 12:47Speaker 2: he's in peak physical condition. He's never been hurt before.
- 12:51Speaker 2: There's been it's been. There's a clean rupture and a
- 12:53Speaker 2: clean surgery from everything that we've heard. So it's not
- 12:58Speaker 2: totally out of the realm of possibility that by like
- 13:01Speaker 2: March or April of next year, he could try to
- 13:05Speaker 2: ramp it up to be make it for the playoffs.
- 13:08Speaker 2: And I'm not saying that they should do that, right,
- 13:10Speaker 2: I'm not saying that that's smart. I'm just saying that
- 13:13Speaker 2: it's not completely crazy to say that there's a chance
- 13:19Speaker 2: that let's say they are the Bridge Celtics, and let's
- 13:21Speaker 2: say they are pacing to win fifty games, which in
- 13:25Speaker 2: this Eastern Conference might be like the three or four
- 13:28Speaker 2: seed in the East. And then you see it, look
- 13:30Speaker 2: at it, and you say, well, he's good. You know,
- 13:35Speaker 2: he's ready to come back. You know, in late March
- 13:38Speaker 2: early April, we have ten more regular season games to
- 13:41Speaker 2: get him into some game shape. It's not crazy to
- 13:45Speaker 2: think that he could play at the end of next
- 13:46Speaker 2: year because of his age and because of the history
- 13:49Speaker 2: in terms of his you know, work ethic and all
- 13:51Speaker 2: that good stuff. That's total copium. That is an absolute
- 13:55Speaker 2: green teamer take. But I that's out there this morning
- 13:58Speaker 2: a little bit amongst us, you know, diehard Celtics fans
- 14:02Speaker 2: that it's not totally outlandish to think that he could maybe.
- 14:06Speaker 1: If they're not a true contender, just let him rest,
- 14:08Speaker 1: maybe a couple games at the end of the year,
- 14:10Speaker 1: to get his feet back.
- 14:10Speaker 2: No, I don't need him to play, and I think
- 14:13Speaker 2: I would probably prefer them to just treat next year
- 14:16Speaker 2: as a reset season.
- 14:18Speaker 1: We'll see in October. What would it be, October twenty
- 14:20Speaker 1: twenty six, No, October twenty twenty seven, No, twenty six,
- 14:25Speaker 1: twenty six. Next year is the twenty five six, Yeah,
- 14:28Speaker 1: I'll see October twenty six. That's where I Matt.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean like I hear that. But at the
- 14:34Speaker 2: same time, if they're again, if they're the Isaiah Thomas
- 14:38Speaker 2: Bridgie Celtics and they're a fifty win team without him,
- 14:42Speaker 2: and they really feel like they could get hot at
- 14:45Speaker 2: the right time, I'm not rolling it out, That's all
- 14:47Speaker 2: I'm saying. I can't roll it out for my own psyche.
- 14:50Speaker 1: I can't have this argument again next year, Ricky Minticamp,
- 14:54Speaker 1: Let's talk Patriots.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Sorry, thank you, I appreciate I had to you know,
- 14:58Speaker 2: I had the vent a little bit.
- 14:59Speaker 1: I needed a little.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Therapy there, right to vent for a second about what
- 15:04Speaker 2: just happened to my team, Rookie Mini Camp. We were
- 15:08Speaker 2: out there. God, what was it Friday? About? All these
- 15:12Speaker 2: in a blaze at this point Friday watching Rookie Mini Caamp.
- 15:16Speaker 2: I think the biggest takeaway, And again we always preface
- 15:21Speaker 2: these things and as we should. Nobody is putting anybody
- 15:24Speaker 2: in the Hall of Fame, and nobody is putting anybody
- 15:27Speaker 2: in the bust category because of one day of Rookie
- 15:30Speaker 2: Mini Caamp practice. Like, none of these takeaways, none of
- 15:33Speaker 2: these opinions are are should be, or are anything crazy
- 15:38Speaker 2: in terms of expectations for any of these guys. But
- 15:42Speaker 2: I think everybody's biggest takeaway, just listening around to what
- 15:46Speaker 2: other people who were there were saying, was just more
- 15:48Speaker 2: about the coaching staff and about Mike Rabel and just
- 15:51Speaker 2: watching Mike Rabel conduct a practice and how hands on
- 15:56Speaker 2: he is as a coach, how active he is throughout
- 15:59Speaker 2: the practice, is the pace of practice I thought was
- 16:02Speaker 2: noticeably quicker, maybe even more noticeably than the end of Belichick,
- 16:07Speaker 2: I would say, and that's not what veterans. So we'll
- 16:09Speaker 2: see what happens when, you know, the experienced guys get
- 16:12Speaker 2: in there, maybe it drags a little bit more. But
- 16:14Speaker 2: it felt fast paced, it felt energetic, it felt loud,
- 16:18Speaker 2: like I just like felt like I heard a lot
- 16:20Speaker 2: of things now we were inside, So maybe that was
- 16:22Speaker 2: a fact that, but it just felt like it not
- 16:26Speaker 2: just Rabel, you know, all the coaches. It felt like
- 16:29Speaker 2: they really were setting a tone and an energy. And
- 16:32Speaker 2: then of course, you know, Mike Rabel is just every
- 16:35Speaker 2: single position is getting coached by Mike Rable, Like there's
- 16:38Speaker 2: not one one spot, from special teams drills, to receivers,
- 16:44Speaker 2: to tight ends to offensive line, defensive line, which is
- 16:48Speaker 2: what you would expect, you know, defensive line, and linebacker.
- 16:50Speaker 2: You know, he's playing like scout team linebacker. You know,
- 16:54Speaker 2: at one point in this practice, he it was impressive
- 16:57Speaker 2: to watch, Like I look at that and come away
- 17:00Speaker 2: personally exhausted from watching how adiv is and like asking myself,
- 17:07Speaker 2: is it truly realistic to do that for six straight months?
- 17:10Speaker 2: Like once training camp comes around, but he does it
- 17:12Speaker 2: like he has that kind of energy.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Yeah. No, I think that's their plant. Like, I think
- 17:17Speaker 1: that's the way he's gonna do this is he's going
- 17:19Speaker 1: to be involved in every little bit of it. And
- 17:21Speaker 1: we heard from Milton Williams yesterday kind of a story
- 17:23Speaker 1: about how they were running it sound like they were
- 17:26Speaker 1: running gassers and Williams knew he was going to get
- 17:28Speaker 1: to line in time and he kind of pulled up
- 17:30Speaker 1: and Rabel called him out for it. It's the highest
- 17:31Speaker 1: paid free agent in you know, April or May on
- 17:36Speaker 1: one rep and Rabel stepped in and told him to
- 17:38Speaker 1: run it like he's watching everything. He's doing everything. He's
- 17:41Speaker 1: involved in everything. True CEO head coach. And we talked
- 17:44Speaker 1: about the salt the last years. That's not easy to do. No,
- 17:48Speaker 1: we kind of saw a little taste of it on Friday.
- 17:50Speaker 2: He's going up to land lairs and correcting around. He's
- 17:55Speaker 2: going up to CJ. Dupree and making a correction. It
- 17:59Speaker 2: was and it was expected from my vantage point that
- 18:03Speaker 2: he'd be doing that kind of stuff with the offensive
- 18:05Speaker 2: and defensive line, like that's where his specialty is. Even
- 18:08Speaker 2: special teams and he mentioned it in his press conference,
- 18:11Speaker 2: like he played a ton of special teams throughout his
- 18:13Speaker 2: NFL career, especially early in Pittsburgh, So I had all
- 18:17Speaker 2: the expectations in the world that those were going to
- 18:19Speaker 2: be areas of expertise for him. But even going out
- 18:22Speaker 2: and like coaching you know, route like top of the
- 18:25Speaker 2: route technique and like being able to break that kind
- 18:29Speaker 2: of stuff down that that was impressive. You know, that
- 18:32Speaker 2: tells you a guy that knows every single detail of
- 18:35Speaker 2: a football team.
- 18:36Speaker 1: And I think some of this is your And I
- 18:38Speaker 1: don't know if he was doing that in Tennessee or not,
- 18:40Speaker 1: but I think you're seeing the value of his I
- 18:42Speaker 1: don't know, what, do we want to call it a
- 18:44Speaker 1: gap year? Yeah, you know, being an exchange student in
- 18:47Speaker 1: Cleveland last year on the offensive side of the ball
- 18:49Speaker 1: and getting to work right now. He said he worked
- 18:51Speaker 1: mostly with the offensive line, but did some with tight ends.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Where this is relevant, I think you're kind of seeing
- 18:56Speaker 1: that where he has this more well rounded background than
- 18:59Speaker 1: maybe he had when he started coaching.
- 19:01Speaker 2: So the other takeaway that I had on the coaching front,
- 19:05Speaker 2: I had known this because we had done some some
- 19:08Speaker 2: videos and stuff like that with him. But Josh McDaniel's
- 19:11Speaker 2: probably lost like one hundred pounds.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Yeah, he looks good.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Yeah, like we got felt McDaniel's like, this looks like
- 19:16Speaker 2: two thousand and five six Josh McDaniels. He looks like
- 19:21Speaker 2: another guy that he took the full year off. You know,
- 19:24Speaker 2: we're able didn't, but he took the full year off.
- 19:26Speaker 2: And now it feels like maybe revitalized, you were, rejuvenated,
- 19:31Speaker 2: you know, whatever word you want to use to describe it.
- 19:33Speaker 2: But we haven't got to see him up close with
- 19:36Speaker 2: Drake May yet that will be cool. But we saw
- 19:38Speaker 2: him coaching Kyle Williams up a little bit, you know,
- 19:42Speaker 2: just a vibrant Josh, rejuvenated Josh McDaniels, which I found interesting.
- 19:49Speaker 2: It looks like a like a totally different person, Like
- 19:51Speaker 2: he cut his weight in half and and that's a
- 19:54Speaker 2: I don't know if that means anything at all. It
- 19:57Speaker 2: just was an observation that he he looked like a
- 20:00Speaker 2: more energetic, spelt guy out there. Let's get to the players.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Will Campbell obviously started starting in order off the top
- 20:07Speaker 2: here at left tackle. There's no there's no Peter Skeronsky
- 20:13Speaker 2: going on here. We're not you know, cross training or
- 20:17Speaker 2: unsure or whatever the case may be. I know we
- 20:19Speaker 2: posted some pictures yesterday from UH practice with the veterans
- 20:24Speaker 2: with Drake May, and he's on Drake May's blindside at
- 20:27Speaker 2: left tackle right away. So that was the first takeaway
- 20:30Speaker 2: was just there's no question internally, I don't think about
- 20:34Speaker 2: is he a tackle? Is he a guard? At least
- 20:36Speaker 2: early on, He's going to be a tackle and there's
- 20:38Speaker 2: not going to be any debate about that. The other
- 20:40Speaker 2: thing that I just again, it's against blocking pads with
- 20:45Speaker 2: no pads on in a day one a rookie minicamp.
- 20:48Speaker 2: But you can see the power and you can you
- 20:52Speaker 2: can see the hands and the grip strength that we
- 20:55Speaker 2: talked a ton about during the draft process and the
- 20:57Speaker 2: way you know, he explodes out of his ants and
- 21:00Speaker 2: with a really good leverage and really good power from
- 21:04Speaker 2: the ground up and his hands, you know, his finishing ability.
- 21:08Speaker 2: You you could see that even just watching him, you know,
- 21:11Speaker 2: block against against the pads and things like that. You know,
- 21:14Speaker 2: there's a pop that he makes when he makes contact
- 21:17Speaker 2: with that pad. So I we you know, still don't
- 21:22Speaker 2: know about pass protection that that's gonna be the number
- 21:25Speaker 2: one thing with him. The length stuff and all that
- 21:26Speaker 2: stuff is going to impact him a lot more in
- 21:29Speaker 2: pass protection than it is in run blocking. But just
- 21:31Speaker 2: watching him move and watching him go through drills and
- 21:34Speaker 2: from a run blocking perspective, it was it was exactly
- 21:37Speaker 2: what I expected to see and it checked the box
- 21:40Speaker 2: for me one hundred percent that I wanted to see
- 21:43Speaker 2: out of a non padded thing. Like I compared it
- 21:45Speaker 2: when we were watching during practice. This is a pro day,
- 21:49Speaker 2: right like that. Yeah, this is what it looks like
- 21:51Speaker 2: for offensive lineman out of Pro day. This is what
- 21:53Speaker 2: you're gonna see. They're gonna be hitting blocking pads. They're
- 21:56Speaker 2: going to be executing different blocks on the line of scrimmage,
- 21:59Speaker 2: most likely you know, reach blocks, combos, doubles, you know
- 22:04Speaker 2: those types of things like that's what you're gonna ask
- 22:06Speaker 2: him to do in this kind of setting. And you
- 22:08Speaker 2: can easily see the athleticism, the exposedness, the power that
- 22:12Speaker 2: he has in his frame. How all that is going
- 22:15Speaker 2: to translate nicely to run blocking. Well, we'll see about
- 22:17Speaker 2: the pass pro but from the run blocking perspective, it
- 22:20Speaker 2: was cool to see to hear that that thud, to
- 22:22Speaker 2: hear it like hear how powerful and strong he is
- 22:26Speaker 2: into the blocking pads was. I watched it for like
- 22:29Speaker 2: a good twenty minutes. I was really impressed and into it.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Yeah. And another thing like going through they actually weren't
- 22:39Speaker 1: using whistles. The coaches were just yelling whistle at the
- 22:41Speaker 1: end of each rep. But you know sometimes guy would
- 22:43Speaker 1: go through rep of your whistle and the guy would
- 22:45Speaker 1: just kind of stop. With Will Campbell, you'd hear whistle, whistle, whistle,
- 22:48Speaker 1: like just finishing every single rep, which obviously we've seen
- 22:53Speaker 1: him do on tape. There was this weird narrative out
- 22:56Speaker 1: there that he wasn't like physical and that he wasn't
- 23:00Speaker 1: that much of a bully leading up to the draft.
- 23:02Speaker 1: I don't quite know about that one. Yeah, no, I
- 23:06Speaker 1: you saw a little bit of that.
- 23:07Speaker 2: You saw everything you wanted to see. And the last
- 23:09Speaker 2: thing I would say about Will Campbell just talking to
- 23:11Speaker 2: some of his coaches down at LSU for the future
- 23:14Speaker 2: that I wrote about him on the website, the one
- 23:16Speaker 2: thing that a lot of them mentioned was he's a
- 23:19Speaker 2: true tone setter of the offensive line. And again, no
- 23:25Speaker 2: one's fitting him for Red Jackets. There's a long way
- 23:27Speaker 2: to go. There's still a lot of question marks about
- 23:30Speaker 2: some of the things with his game. If he practices
- 23:33Speaker 2: that hard in May at a rookie Mini caamp, that's
- 23:37Speaker 2: when you talk about the culture stuff like, that's when
- 23:40Speaker 2: you talk about setting tones and being that kind of
- 23:44Speaker 2: guy and leading by example and all that kind of stuff.
- 23:48Speaker 2: He was blocking like it was game speed in day
- 23:52Speaker 2: one of rookie Minicamp in the middle of May. So
- 23:57Speaker 2: if you want to re establish a culture and re
- 24:01Speaker 2: establish a just a baseline work ethic in an offensive
- 24:06Speaker 2: line room, that's what that's what it needs to be. Like,
- 24:09Speaker 2: that's what your best player in the fourth overall pick
- 24:11Speaker 2: in the draft needs to do. He needs to practice
- 24:15Speaker 2: like that, right, And that was probably out of all
- 24:18Speaker 2: this other stuff we're talking about with Campbell, I would
- 24:21Speaker 2: say the effort was probably the number one thing to
- 24:23Speaker 2: take away from this kind of setting was just you
- 24:26Speaker 2: could see that it was tangible that, Okay, this guy
- 24:29Speaker 2: our fourth overall pick. If I'm Jack Conley right like
- 24:33Speaker 2: I'm an undrafted rookie trying to make the roster, and
- 24:36Speaker 2: the fourth overall pick is balking through the whistle and
- 24:42Speaker 2: taking every rep like a game rep in Rookie Mini Caamp, well,
- 24:45Speaker 2: I better up my game too. I better get to
- 24:48Speaker 2: that level as well. And you hope that that trickles
- 24:51Speaker 2: in even with veterans as we go here and the
- 24:54Speaker 2: guys that have been here, so that that was good
- 24:57Speaker 2: to see as well. From Will Campbell. Again, you know,
- 24:59Speaker 2: looks part, fills out the suit, whatever cliche you want
- 25:02Speaker 2: to use. We did not see Travon Henderson. He was
- 25:06Speaker 2: there for the rest of many camp. It looks right like,
- 25:09Speaker 2: but he just wasn't there for the day that it
- 25:11Speaker 2: was open to the media. So I'll skip Travon Henderson.
- 25:14Speaker 2: There's no more speculation needed about why he wasn't there.
- 25:19Speaker 1: He was there on one of the other days they
- 25:21Speaker 1: put out pictures. Yeah, he was there at some point.
- 25:23Speaker 2: I believe it was Saturday that they put out the
- 25:25Speaker 2: picture that he was there, and then he was there
- 25:28Speaker 2: yesterday or whatever. Those pictures were taken from Ota Is
- 25:31Speaker 2: taking handoffs from Jake May. So he's here, he's not.
- 25:34Speaker 2: There's no more, uh, you know, if there ever was
- 25:37Speaker 2: any concern about him not participating, he's participating now. So
- 25:41Speaker 2: Kyle Williams, I thought, again, moved well and just kind
- 25:45Speaker 2: of looked the part as well. So I'm working a
- 25:49Speaker 2: lot on the outside, which I think is tells you
- 25:51Speaker 2: a little bit about there are plans for him, at
- 25:54Speaker 2: least in the short term in terms of where he's
- 25:55Speaker 2: going to train and where he's going to fit in
- 25:58Speaker 2: right away. But there was there was a certain speed
- 26:02Speaker 2: to his game and quickness to his game that I liked.
- 26:04Speaker 2: They did a open field leveraging drill. They obviously aren't tackling.
- 26:07Speaker 2: There's no pads, so they're not tackling anybody, but they're
- 26:10Speaker 2: just angling, you know, to tackle people. And in a
- 26:14Speaker 2: phone booth he made a guy look silly like you
- 26:16Speaker 2: got dough for him and just completely missed and ended
- 26:19Speaker 2: up falling, basically dropping the guy to the ground. Right,
- 26:22Speaker 2: So you see some of the quickness in a phone booth.
- 26:25Speaker 2: You certainly see some of the separation ability and in
- 26:28Speaker 2: the team drills that we did get a look at.
- 26:30Speaker 2: So again, same thing, like I said with Bill Campbell,
- 26:34Speaker 2: just kind of a box checked for Kyle Williams. I
- 26:37Speaker 2: thought that he looked as a speed receiver should in
- 26:40Speaker 2: this kind of setting, I should come away and pressed
- 26:42Speaker 2: with well his speed, and I was pretty impressed with
- 26:46Speaker 2: the speed.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I'd agree with that it's it was tough for
- 26:49Speaker 1: a lot of the pass catching players because the quarterbacks
- 26:50Speaker 1: and a ton of help. But yeah, you're right, he
- 26:52Speaker 1: moved well and saw a lot of them on the outside,
- 26:54Speaker 1: which is notable.
- 26:56Speaker 2: All right, So those were the draft picks.
- 26:58Speaker 1: You know.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Jared Wilson I thought, didn't do a ton in this practice.
- 27:01Speaker 2: You know, they had him snapping, he's playing center, like
- 27:03Speaker 2: those are the types of things you're looking for. But
- 27:06Speaker 2: you know, I didn't necessarily see him. You know, in
- 27:09Speaker 2: this kind of setting, the center is not going to
- 27:11Speaker 2: be super active in drills, so I wouldn't necessarily have
- 27:15Speaker 2: a big take about him. The two defensive linemen, Joshua
- 27:18Speaker 2: Farmer and Brandon Swinson. The biggest thing I just saw
- 27:22Speaker 2: with those two guys is that you know, they their
- 27:25Speaker 2: physical traits looked how I was hoping they would look.
- 27:29Speaker 2: You know, they they you know, Farmer is maybe a
- 27:32Speaker 2: little shorter than I was expecting just in person, but
- 27:36Speaker 2: the long arms were obvious, Like you could see that
- 27:38Speaker 2: he's got long arms and sort of a I would say,
- 27:41Speaker 2: like almost like a key on white build to him,
- 27:43Speaker 2: Like he's you can see sort of like a raw
- 27:45Speaker 2: tools the athletic guy out of his build. You know,
- 27:49Speaker 2: Swinson was that an athletic, you know, outside pass rusher,
- 27:53Speaker 2: you know, edge rusher looked to him, but that that
- 27:56Speaker 2: was farmer kind of looked a little bit like ke
- 27:59Speaker 2: On White to me. And interesting that practice is the
- 28:02Speaker 2: way the cut.
- 28:03Speaker 1: I think he's a little bit bigger. Yeah, but yeah,
- 28:07Speaker 1: I could see that.
- 28:07Speaker 2: I'm not saying that in terms of their playing style necessarily,
- 28:10Speaker 2: there's a ton of Simie right physically. Let's get to
- 28:13Speaker 2: the undrafted free agents.
- 28:15Speaker 1: I don't I've won take on one more of their
- 28:17Speaker 1: draft pars. Yeah, Marcus Bryant, the tackle from Missouri, is
- 28:21Speaker 1: like insanely huge. Yea, Like he's he he was dwarfing everybody.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Like I saw him next to Will Campbell and I thought, like,
- 28:31Speaker 1: Will Campbell looked small, and then I saw them next
- 28:34Speaker 1: to everybody else and I was like, no, Will campbells
- 28:35Speaker 1: still the second biggest guy out here. Marcus Bryant is
- 28:39Speaker 1: massive and with his athleticism, man, if they can get
- 28:42Speaker 1: him going, if they can fix some of that technique stuff,
- 28:45Speaker 1: I don't know. Like again, I think he might almost
- 28:49Speaker 1: be too big, just in terms of the height and
- 28:51Speaker 1: leverage and stuff. But you just talk about raw traits
- 28:54Speaker 1: and a guy that has some tools you want to
- 28:56Speaker 1: work with. Yeah, he's really big, he moves well like that.
- 29:02Speaker 1: I can't believe he fell as far as he did.
- 29:04Speaker 1: I don't think he was gonna be like a top
- 29:06Speaker 1: to hundred pick or anything, or a top one fifty pick,
- 29:08Speaker 1: I should say. But like, there's some fun traits there,
- 29:11Speaker 1: there really are.
- 29:12Speaker 2: He's he's a little high cut. I think that was
- 29:14Speaker 2: one thing that people had against him was long legs,
- 29:18Speaker 2: short torso, high cut frame, which typically tends to lead
- 29:22Speaker 2: to some issues with leveraging or pad level and your blocking.
- 29:26Speaker 2: When you're built like that, especially at tackle like it's
- 29:29Speaker 2: harder to get underneath guys, it's harder to get hands
- 29:33Speaker 2: on speed because you don't have the bend in that
- 29:36Speaker 2: flexibility in your lower halft to do that. There's good
- 29:39Speaker 2: tackles that have gotten away with it being high cut
- 29:42Speaker 2: like that and have had really good NFL careers, So
- 29:45Speaker 2: I'm not saying it's impossible. But he's an athletic guy,
- 29:48Speaker 2: there's no doubt about that. And he's a big dude,
- 29:50Speaker 2: Like yeah, yeah, and that's all we're looking for this
- 29:52Speaker 2: time of year in terms of the undrafted rookies. I
- 29:56Speaker 2: had some fun during practice with some of these guys.
- 29:58Speaker 2: You will one guy in in particular, Uh, and it's
- 30:02Speaker 2: not who you think. Some of it was kind of
- 30:04Speaker 2: tongue in cheek because like.
- 30:08Speaker 1: It stuff was legit.
- 30:10Speaker 2: I I like the cut of the of his jib,
- 30:13Speaker 2: as Paul Parrella likes to say, I was impressed, a
- 30:16Speaker 2: more impressed than I thought I was going to be
- 30:18Speaker 2: about Land Larison and just uh the burst that he has,
- 30:21Speaker 2: Like he's not I still don't think that he's going
- 30:24Speaker 2: to have great long speed right, Like, he's not a
- 30:27Speaker 2: top end home run hitter type of running back. But
- 30:30Speaker 2: for the role that I think he projects best into,
- 30:33Speaker 2: which is that James White, Shane Ververen, Kevin Falk, third
- 30:37Speaker 2: down running back type of role. He's got good initial quickness,
- 30:42Speaker 2: you know, out of routes and burst into the flats
- 30:46Speaker 2: and to the top of the route and things like that.
- 30:48Speaker 2: And he's got a little bit of juice at the
- 30:50Speaker 2: top of the route, like a little bit of wiggle
- 30:52Speaker 2: there to his game. So he's wearing thirty four. He
- 30:57Speaker 2: kind of looks like rexburg Head. He's playing like rex Burke.
- 31:00Speaker 2: I think that comparison still exists in my mind, at
- 31:02Speaker 2: least for land Larrison, but in general, that's where what
- 31:06Speaker 2: my takeaway with him was was like, you know that
- 31:08Speaker 2: movement skill that those traits like that lends that themselves
- 31:13Speaker 2: to that kind of role in the in this offense,
- 31:15Speaker 2: Like he at least has that baseline of Okay, he
- 31:19Speaker 2: moves the way that you need to move to be
- 31:20Speaker 2: able to succeed in that role.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, it's there's quickness to it. There's real quickness
- 31:26Speaker 1: and subtleness to his game. So that was impressive. I'm
- 31:29Speaker 1: surprised you weren't more impressed with Chisholm just gets open,
- 31:32Speaker 1: the subtleness of his ro out running, just really smart player,
- 31:36Speaker 1: The way he sees the field, create separation, things like that.
- 31:39Speaker 1: I mean, these are all things you see on tape.
- 31:41Speaker 1: You see it in person. You can see some more
- 31:42Speaker 1: of than nuance in the fort work and things like that. CJ.
- 31:47Speaker 1: DePree another guy that you know. Seeing him in person,
- 31:50Speaker 1: you see the list in size right, six five, two
- 31:52Speaker 1: fifty whatever, you see him in person, it's like, okay,
- 31:54Speaker 1: like he looks like a tackle. Yeah, he's built like
- 31:57Speaker 1: Nate Soulder kind Yeah, he's you know, forty pounds later,
- 31:59Speaker 1: but built like Nate Solder, moves better than I thought.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Guy that's going one hundred percent every rep. I think
- 32:07Speaker 1: it's the guys we've talked about, the one guy I
- 32:09Speaker 1: wonder And maybe this is just because they haven't really
- 32:11Speaker 1: done install They were using brock Lampy more as a
- 32:15Speaker 1: tight end than a traditional fullback. Maybe that's because they're
- 32:17Speaker 1: going through some very fine and he did do some
- 32:19Speaker 1: traditional fullback stuff. Maybe it's because that's not all installed
- 32:22Speaker 1: yet or whatever, But that was the one thing I
- 32:24Speaker 1: noticed that I was like, if if he's just gonna
- 32:25Speaker 1: compete mainly as a tight end, I don't think he's gonna.
- 32:28Speaker 2: Make the team. So there are there was some stuff
- 32:31Speaker 2: on his tape at Northern Illinois, you know, talking about
- 32:34Speaker 2: brock Lampy. Yeah, wing blocking, not as much in line
- 32:38Speaker 2: like hand in the dirt sixth offensive lineman type stuff,
- 32:41Speaker 2: more like h BAC move tight end.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:44Speaker 2: Angles that he was taking that weren't true full back
- 32:48Speaker 2: backfield rep. So he has that in his back.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Yeah, But I just think if that's what you want,
- 32:53Speaker 1: jaheen Beale's better. We talked about this last week. If
- 32:56Speaker 1: you want.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Differently, so that like that's the only pushback I would
- 32:59Speaker 2: have on that because Lampy's what like six two fifty
- 33:03Speaker 2: two sixty, Like he's built like a mac truck, whereas
- 33:06Speaker 2: Bell is like an athletic tight end.
- 33:08Speaker 1: But if you want if you want Kyle Yuschek, right, yeah,
- 33:11Speaker 1: it's it's Jean Bell. If you want the guy that's
- 33:15Speaker 1: going to be more tight end than fullback, would beyond
- 33:17Speaker 1: that hybrid, it's going to be Gene Bell. If you
- 33:19Speaker 1: want Yakub Johnson, James Devlin, that kind of guy, it's
- 33:25Speaker 1: Brock Lampy. You wanted the hybrid, you would have drafted
- 33:27Speaker 1: rob youts.
- 33:28Speaker 2: Well, the hybrid is sort of what I'm thinking is
- 33:31Speaker 2: maybe the role that they have in mind. And when
- 33:33Speaker 2: you watch Ravens tape or Chargers tape with their guys
- 33:37Speaker 2: that are more are bigger than Lampy, a lot of Yeah,
- 33:40Speaker 2: those guys are like converted defensive linemen that are now
- 33:43Speaker 2: playing as blockers for those two teams for the Harbas.
- 33:46Speaker 2: But when you watch them, they do take a lot
- 33:48Speaker 2: of reps as in that wing role, right, which is
- 33:51Speaker 2: like off the line tight end next to the Why
- 33:54Speaker 2: that's a little bit further out and there's a little
- 33:56Speaker 2: back on the line of scrimmage, and that role is
- 34:01Speaker 2: you know, there's a lot of different things you can
- 34:03Speaker 2: do within that role because of the alignment. You can
- 34:05Speaker 2: have him get out and block on the perimeter and
- 34:07Speaker 2: block corners and you know, slot corners and outside corners
- 34:11Speaker 2: on tosses or outside zone you can sift them, you know,
- 34:15Speaker 2: block across the formation, coming back to across the grain,
- 34:19Speaker 2: and like a split zone or a duo scheme, you
- 34:21Speaker 2: can have him insert up to the second level as
- 34:23Speaker 2: well in duo. So like there's a bunch of different
- 34:26Speaker 2: things that you can do from that position as well
- 34:30Speaker 2: as you know, having those guys to block as like
- 34:33Speaker 2: a full back if you want it, to move him
- 34:34Speaker 2: into that kind of role. So maybe that's more of
- 34:37Speaker 2: the role that this is evolving to under McDaniels. It's
- 34:41Speaker 2: definitely not so much with the chargers, but with the Ravens,
- 34:44Speaker 2: like it's more of like a wing t you know,
- 34:47Speaker 2: option offense role. So if they are thinking of putting
- 34:50Speaker 2: that kind of stuff in with Drake, may not to
- 34:53Speaker 2: run him like Lamar Jackson, but like just a little
- 34:55Speaker 2: bit of it and have a touch of it then
- 34:58Speaker 2: maybe that that's part of what their thought process is.
- 35:02Speaker 2: But I thought Lampy's blocking tape from the various alignments
- 35:07Speaker 2: is definitely better than gams.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Well, so that's what I go back to. If you're
- 35:11Speaker 1: gonna have that guy spend any sort of amount of
- 35:13Speaker 1: time meeting a linebacker in the A gap, yeah, it
- 35:17Speaker 1: has to be Broccolin. Yeah, and I think that I
- 35:20Speaker 1: don't think can do that. And they can pay base
- 35:22Speaker 1: I think right. And they can both make the team too,
- 35:24Speaker 1: It's not necessarily one or the other. Now that means
- 35:27Speaker 1: probably five wide receivers instead of six, or you're keeping
- 35:30Speaker 1: Marcus Bryant as your third tackle so you don't have
- 35:33Speaker 1: to keep low In Jacobs as direct positional backups. Maybe
- 35:36Speaker 1: they're keeping one less cornering come from anywhere, one less
- 35:38Speaker 1: running back. But they can both make the team. It's
- 35:41Speaker 1: just gonna come down to those those at large spots.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, I I I still won't. I will
- 35:49Speaker 2: believe that lead with the full back in the backfield
- 35:53Speaker 2: going up to the linebacker in the A gap is
- 35:56Speaker 2: going to be a in Josh McDaniel's offense until it
- 35:59Speaker 2: isn't like that is a day one Josh McDaniel staple.
- 36:03Speaker 2: It was in Vegas, it was with the Patriots, Like,
- 36:05Speaker 2: I just can't imagine that that's not gonna be anywhere
- 36:08Speaker 2: in the playbook, Like they're just gonna completely walk away
- 36:11Speaker 2: from that kind of stuff. So I have to imagine
- 36:14Speaker 2: that that's gonna be there. Now, could it be there
- 36:16Speaker 2: on goal line and short yardage? And you're using a
- 36:19Speaker 2: sixth offensive lineman as an eligible player because it's a
- 36:22Speaker 2: situational thing only like sure, I don't know if it's
- 36:25Speaker 2: gonna be in there first and ten from the twenty five, Like,
- 36:29Speaker 2: I don't know if that's like gonna be a base
- 36:31Speaker 2: offense type of thing for them or not, But I
- 36:34Speaker 2: it's gonna be in the playbook, like it's gonna be
- 36:36Speaker 2: in their installations and things like that. So it'd be
- 36:39Speaker 2: interesting to see where they go with that. Jack Conley,
- 36:43Speaker 2: there's another guy there, And I was encouraged by what
- 36:48Speaker 2: I saw at Boston College out of Jack Conley, what
- 36:50Speaker 2: I heard at his pro day about his versatility and
- 36:53Speaker 2: about some of the different things that he could do
- 36:55Speaker 2: from you know, playing guard, tackle, jumbo tight end, like
- 36:59Speaker 2: all across.
- 37:00Speaker 4: UH.
- 37:00Speaker 2: The offensive line certainly has size. You know certainly looks
- 37:04Speaker 2: the part like some of these other guys like we're
- 37:06Speaker 2: talking about. So, I mean I've seen let's not get
- 37:10Speaker 2: carried away with Jack Conley, Like no one's really giving
- 37:13Speaker 2: him a shot right now at left guard, I don't think.
- 37:15Speaker 2: I think we're a ways, a long ways away from
- 37:18Speaker 2: him being in a conversation of actually seeing the field
- 37:22Speaker 2: making the roster. But another one of those guys that
- 37:26Speaker 2: I thought just kind of stood out. I mean, he's
- 37:28Speaker 2: a big dude. Well he's bigger than Will Camp.
- 37:30Speaker 1: We from a we just talked about tracking the roster spots,
- 37:34Speaker 1: and that's a guy that can maybe play four spots
- 37:35Speaker 1: yeah for you as a backup. So that's relevant. Just
- 37:38Speaker 1: along those lines, I was talking about this with somebody yesterday.
- 37:42Speaker 1: That left guard spot is probably the most wide open
- 37:45Speaker 1: right of any on the roster starting left guard, and
- 37:49Speaker 1: everybody's kind of thrown out three lead contenders. And we'll
- 37:52Speaker 1: get a better idea of what this looks like it,
- 37:54Speaker 1: you know, over the next couple of weeks ago. DA's
- 37:55Speaker 1: a mini camp but lighton Robinson City, so cold strange. Yeah,
- 38:00Speaker 1: what are the odds that the week one starting left
- 38:03Speaker 1: guard is not in that group of three because I
- 38:07Speaker 1: think it's bigger than people think. And that could be
- 38:09Speaker 1: Wes Switz, or that could be Taking Wilson, that can
- 38:11Speaker 1: be Jack Conley, could be this the other UDFA they
- 38:14Speaker 1: signed from Arkansas State who was with them on a
- 38:17Speaker 1: tryout basis, Like I don't know, I put it like
- 38:19Speaker 1: twenty five thirty percent.
- 38:21Speaker 2: That high. Yeah, Jared Wilson definitely pushes it into a
- 38:27Speaker 2: possibility range, right, you know, he could he could definitely
- 38:31Speaker 2: come out in training camp and they could look at
- 38:34Speaker 2: it and say he's just too good to keep him
- 38:36Speaker 2: off the field, Like we need to find a spot
- 38:38Speaker 2: for him. Maybe it's out, like we talked about this
- 38:40Speaker 2: a little bit last week. Maybe it's that left guard
- 38:43Speaker 2: to start, so that you're taking the center of responsibilities
- 38:45Speaker 2: off of him as a rookie and make it easier.
- 38:48Speaker 2: I still think it's a long way or a long
- 38:50Speaker 2: way away from talking about a Jack Conley or any
- 38:53Speaker 2: UDFA pushing to start Schweitzer is interesting.
- 38:56Speaker 1: Well, just remember when I told you last year that
- 38:58Speaker 1: Michael Jordan had a chance started left guard. He told
- 39:00Speaker 1: me was gonna make the team.
- 39:02Speaker 2: Okay, but that shouldn't have been the case.
- 39:05Speaker 1: No, he was the best left guard last year at
- 39:08Speaker 1: this point.
- 39:09Speaker 2: Which is an indictment on the roster.
- 39:10Speaker 1: It's an indictment on the roster. But they go it's
- 39:12Speaker 1: the same guys.
- 39:13Speaker 2: They're better now than they were then.
- 39:15Speaker 1: It's the same guys they did not need to start.
- 39:19Speaker 1: I don't think he can win the starting jobs.
- 39:22Speaker 2: I think West Wwhitz are no offense, no no disrespect.
- 39:24Speaker 2: Men like West Sweitzer. To me, is Michael Jordan right
- 39:27Speaker 2: like that. He's a veteran guy that's kicked around the league,
- 39:30Speaker 2: that has some starts under his belt. But that's what
- 39:33Speaker 2: he in terms of the talent level of the player,
- 39:37Speaker 2: he's a He's a Michael Jordan.
- 39:38Speaker 1: But it's the same guys. Well, I guess City so
- 39:41Speaker 1: has hurt. City would have started last.
- 39:42Speaker 2: Year because like Landon Robinson, is Cole Strange wasn't wasn't
- 39:48Speaker 2: there at that point last year. So it's not the
- 39:51Speaker 2: same guys. If they're in a position where they're starting
- 39:55Speaker 2: the Michael Jordan equivalent week one and left guard, things
- 39:58Speaker 2: went wrong fair enough, things went like multiple people would
- 40:01Speaker 2: I still think if.
- 40:02Speaker 1: Jared Wilson starting Week one, it's a center. I think
- 40:04Speaker 1: they want to keep Met center Mike Rabel kind of
- 40:05Speaker 1: said that last week.
- 40:06Speaker 2: That's fair. That's fair. I just at some point it
- 40:12Speaker 2: get you get into the season and it comes about
- 40:14Speaker 2: winning five.
- 40:14Speaker 1: I look, I think it's gonna be city. So I
- 40:17Speaker 1: know there was a picture going around yesterday from whatever
- 40:19Speaker 1: practice that was West Schweitzer. I think this time of year,
- 40:23Speaker 1: I would expect a lot of that when Tuesday we're
- 40:26Speaker 1: out there for the first time. Wednesday, Yeah, whatever it is,
- 40:29Speaker 1: I would expect to see a lot of that over
- 40:31Speaker 1: the first OTA practice or too, just because it's it's veterans.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Veterans generally get the nod this time of year. It's
- 40:37Speaker 1: like how Bailey's AFFI was repping over Drake May last
- 40:40Speaker 1: year when we started the spring, right, I would expect
- 40:42Speaker 1: to see quite a bit of that in the rookies.
- 40:45Speaker 1: By the time we get to Mini camp, I think
- 40:46Speaker 1: we'll see the rookies more involved.
- 40:48Speaker 2: All right, So that's rooky Minichamp and I just love
- 40:52Speaker 2: and I see it in the chat. I'm sure we
- 40:53Speaker 2: got got some emails about it. I just love how
- 40:57Speaker 2: ten minutes of anything that's not Patriots sets all of you.
- 41:01Speaker 1: We made it a little bit. We tried to make
- 41:02Speaker 1: it Patriots, Ralph.
- 41:03Speaker 2: It's also may Okay, yeah, and uh and I'm sorry,
- 41:07Speaker 2: but I'm in a bad I'm in a bad place
- 41:09Speaker 2: right now. Okay, I'm in a bad place. It's a
- 41:11Speaker 2: dark time right now.
- 41:13Speaker 1: What's your new hobby gonna be?
- 41:14Speaker 2: I'll let you know. I'm still haven't.
- 41:17Speaker 1: Decided or any of my pitch is being considered.
- 41:20Speaker 2: No, definitely not. You keep trying to pitch golf to me,
- 41:23Speaker 2: and I'm not going to golf, and he should golf.
- 41:24Speaker 1: It's a golf is going to great escapism hobby.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Golf is like similar to how like when I hear golf,
- 41:33Speaker 2: it's similar to like remember when like CrossFit first became
- 41:37Speaker 2: really popular.
- 41:37Speaker 1: It's so different and everybody just.
- 41:42Speaker 2: Like cross cross like golf is. It's it's like golf.
- 41:46Speaker 1: Has been around since like centuries out. I'm glad i'mrect
- 41:49Speaker 1: me more of a bird watching guy.
- 41:51Speaker 2: I'm glad you enjoy it it works for you. Don't
- 41:56Speaker 2: try to make me golf. I don't want a golf.
- 41:59Speaker 2: I'm not interested in it. Bad take that's it. I've
- 42:02Speaker 2: done it. I've done it a couple of times in
- 42:04Speaker 2: my life, and I don't enjoy it.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Right. So my one other pitch to Evan was he
- 42:08Speaker 1: should get into video games because if he gets into
- 42:10Speaker 1: video games, we could play CFB and Madden on Twitch. Yeah,
- 42:16Speaker 1: and if you're in the chat, would you want to
- 42:17Speaker 1: watch me and Evan talk Patriots when we played Madden
- 42:20Speaker 1: some sort of football video game. So because maybe we
- 42:23Speaker 1: can make that a thing.
- 42:24Speaker 2: I'll say this Madden is a possibility because I've seen
- 42:31Speaker 2: some of the innovations of Madden, and like I do
- 42:34Speaker 2: feel like you when you know as much about football
- 42:38Speaker 2: like we do, like you can kind of coach the
- 42:41Speaker 2: team and like drop plays and like like you can
- 42:44Speaker 2: see shells a defense.
- 42:45Speaker 1: So they really unlocked that last year. You can now
- 42:48Speaker 1: do like so before it was like if you were
- 42:49Speaker 1: in cover two lined up in cover two. They put
- 42:52Speaker 1: in a mechanic now where you can set a covered shell,
- 42:56Speaker 1: like you can open and cover one and then go
- 42:58Speaker 1: to cover two or whatever. You can do like custom
- 43:00Speaker 1: route stems now on offense. So the College one is
- 43:03Speaker 1: really where they unlocked that. So like just looking at
- 43:06Speaker 1: it and then you can play two K and you
- 43:08Speaker 1: can like sit playing with Jase table.
- 43:10Speaker 2: So like, no, I can't do that.
- 43:11Speaker 5: All right, I want to see you play sixty four
- 43:13Speaker 5: blitz where you can't do any of you can't.
- 43:16Speaker 1: He's not gonna do blitz. You're not an NFL blitz guy.
- 43:18Speaker 3: I was.
- 43:19Speaker 2: I was as a kid.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Yeah you're not now I know that.
- 43:21Speaker 2: No. Like I mean, they literally don't call passing appearance.
- 43:23Speaker 2: It's like you can just tackle the gain.
- 43:25Speaker 1: I'll still pitch. I'm pitching. I'm pitching mad in CFP,
- 43:29Speaker 1: and then in CFB you can start learning some of
- 43:31Speaker 1: the players for the draft.
- 43:33Speaker 2: It's it's an option. And like I said, I think
- 43:35Speaker 2: the main reason is it's like I watch all this
- 43:39Speaker 2: film like it'd be kind of cool to put it
- 43:42Speaker 2: to the test, right right, Like if I'm playing quarterback
- 43:44Speaker 2: and I watched Drake May and I criticize him when
- 43:47Speaker 2: he like makes a wrong read, Like am I able
- 43:50Speaker 2: to actually on the fly, like notice a coverage rotation,
- 43:53Speaker 2: Like I d what they're in, know where my beaters are,
- 43:56Speaker 2: get to the beater, Like obviously I'm not making the throw,
- 43:59Speaker 2: but I can do the mental process of what I do.
- 44:02Speaker 1: Now, So you're not making the throw. But they have
- 44:04Speaker 1: like a throw meter now or like you have to
- 44:06Speaker 1: decide exactly how much touch you want to put on
- 44:08Speaker 1: the ball or how much zip so like, mentally you
- 44:10Speaker 1: have to decide like the vision very different than the visions,
- 44:14Speaker 1: very different. Think like think like a shot meter in
- 44:17Speaker 1: two K. But for past Okay, sorry, I'm put in
- 44:20Speaker 1: the chat. If you want to see me and Evan
- 44:22Speaker 1: play Madden or the college game, you can get.
- 44:25Speaker 2: I don't even have a console. I get you on
- 44:27Speaker 2: the console. But if you want to see it, put
- 44:29Speaker 2: it in the chat. Maybe enough of us can convince
- 44:31Speaker 2: even to make this a thing, because I think we'd
- 44:33Speaker 2: have fun. Hey Patriots fans, if you want to see
- 44:36Speaker 2: Toyota's best offers, including those not seen on TV, go

- 45:26Speaker 2: store of the New England Patriots.
- 45:28Speaker 1: All Right, the chat likes any of us playing Madden,
- 45:30Speaker 1: but they think I'd win. So you've been calling.
- 45:31Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I mean you definitely been. I haven't played
- 45:33Speaker 2: Madden in like ten years.
- 45:34Speaker 1: What we get, I give you like a run up
- 45:36Speaker 1: before it's like serious, before we really count it.
- 45:40Speaker 2: Okay, let's get into our roster reset here on the defense,
- 45:43Speaker 2: and maybe we'll do like a couple positions and then
- 45:45Speaker 2: we'll open it up because I know people are waiting.
- 45:47Speaker 1: With pose less positions on defense and offense.
- 45:49Speaker 2: So let's start with the defensive line. There are twelve
- 45:53Speaker 2: names to get through here, so bear with me. Milton Williams,
- 45:56Speaker 2: Christian Barmore, Kean White, Joshua Farmer, Kyrie's Tanga Jeremiah Farms,
- 46:02Speaker 2: Jacqueline Roy, Eric Johnson, Jumaine Jones, Javari Ritzy, Isaiah iiden
- 46:10Speaker 2: eighten I believe, and uh Wilfred Penny are your defensive
- 46:15Speaker 2: lineman right now. So in for the sake of facilitation,
- 46:20Speaker 2: I had two little things I jotted down here yep,
- 46:24Speaker 2: the first one and uh this one is the most
- 46:26Speaker 2: interesting thing to me. Uh just get the caveat of
- 46:30Speaker 2: the way Christian Barmore, like, is he gonna be available?
- 46:33Speaker 2: Is he not gonna be available that you know? Is
- 46:34Speaker 2: he gonna uh be one hundred percent go no setbacks
- 46:38Speaker 2: like last year when he tried to come back. All
- 46:40Speaker 2: that stuff is is definitely out there. But what's a
- 46:44Speaker 2: little bit more interesting to me just in terms of,
- 46:46Speaker 2: uh this defensive line outlook? Is there another level for
- 46:49Speaker 2: Keon White like I have? Is this the best key
- 46:52Speaker 2: on White is gonna be or is there another level?
- 46:56Speaker 2: And can Mike Vrabel and hopefully one sees you know,
- 47:01Speaker 2: his health is in better order, Torell Williams, Yeah, come
- 47:03Speaker 2: back and be able to get that out of him.
- 47:08Speaker 2: And because I go back and forth on Keon White,
- 47:11Speaker 2: on the one hand, there's a ton of raw talent there.
- 47:14Speaker 2: There's a really good pass rush production from last year,
- 47:17Speaker 2: But is he just a interior pass rusher that should
- 47:21Speaker 2: really be more used in a rotation sparingly situationally sparingly
- 47:25Speaker 2: is the wrong word? Situationally is the right word? Or
- 47:28Speaker 2: is there a three down player in there that just
- 47:30Speaker 2: hasn't been coached up properly?
- 47:32Speaker 1: Well? I think some of its consistency because we've seen
- 47:34Speaker 1: flashes of it, but and some of that's due to injuries.
- 47:37Speaker 1: But like he you know, is there another level? I
- 47:39Speaker 1: think at times he's played at very high level. You
- 47:42Speaker 1: look at those first few games of his rookie year,
- 47:44Speaker 1: you look at that little stretch he had last year.
- 47:46Speaker 1: So I don't know that it's it's like he knows
- 47:48Speaker 1: how to do it, it's just can he do it
- 47:51Speaker 1: more often? I think if he's going to this, this
- 47:54Speaker 1: defensive system certainly should help facilitate that. I think it's
- 47:57Speaker 1: a better fit for somebody who plays the way he
- 47:59Speaker 1: wants to play. Talked last year about how you know,
- 48:02Speaker 1: at times he was limited because in the back of
- 48:05Speaker 1: his mind he's working more uncontained than being aggressive. That
- 48:08Speaker 1: shouldn't be as much of an issue this year, So
- 48:10Speaker 1: I don't know that it's I think we've seen him
- 48:13Speaker 1: play at a level where he can be a three
- 48:14Speaker 1: down player. I think we have seen that, but he
- 48:17Speaker 1: also goes through stretches where he can't, Like he struggles
- 48:22Speaker 1: too much against the run, he's not getting after the
- 48:24Speaker 1: quarterback enough, things like that. So I just think it's
- 48:26Speaker 1: about consistency, and consistency is usually the last thing to
- 48:29Speaker 1: come for any player, but that's what I'm looking for
- 48:31Speaker 1: with him more than anything else.
- 48:33Speaker 2: So his role in this defense is interesting because if
- 48:36Speaker 2: you assume that Christian Barmer is healthy and Milton Williams
- 48:40Speaker 2: is the one hundred million dollar man, right and Christian
- 48:44Speaker 2: Barmore is a very well paid player too, both those
- 48:47Speaker 2: guys are not coming off the field a ton. They're
- 48:49Speaker 2: gonna play a lot, yeah, assuming health and all that
- 48:51Speaker 2: kind of stuff. So they're gonna be the three techniques.
- 48:54Speaker 2: They're gonna be, you know, the one shades, like they're
- 48:57Speaker 2: gonna be the guys on the interior for three downs
- 49:00Speaker 2: most likely. So that means that ke On White is
- 49:02Speaker 2: not going to be playing the three technique or playing
- 49:05Speaker 2: over the guard on an every down basis. So the
- 49:08Speaker 2: next step for him is being better on the outside. Now,
- 49:11Speaker 2: he's not going to be standing up like he was
- 49:13Speaker 2: in a Belichick defense. In a more odd front three
- 49:15Speaker 2: to four, he's not going to be out on outside
- 49:17Speaker 2: the tackle. He's probably gonna be in like a five
- 49:20Speaker 2: or a four eye, like right over the tackle. So
- 49:24Speaker 2: can he play that role? Is that better suited? He'll
- 49:28Speaker 2: be handing the dirt, he'll be more up the field,
- 49:31Speaker 2: which I think are things that are encouraging. But he's
- 49:33Speaker 2: openly talked about in the past that he's not a
- 49:37Speaker 2: great outside rusher. He's a great interior rusher, he's not
- 49:41Speaker 2: great up on his feet, he's not great outside of
- 49:43Speaker 2: the tackle. Like that's not an overall strength to his game.
- 49:46Speaker 2: So maybe kicking him inside just even a little bit,
- 49:49Speaker 2: like into that straight up over the tackle would be
- 49:52Speaker 2: a five four eye is like shaded a little bit
- 49:54Speaker 2: into the b gap over the inside shoulder of the tackle,
- 49:57Speaker 2: like those types of alignments, Like maybe that's just enough
- 50:00Speaker 2: inside that he still has that feel of rushing on
- 50:03Speaker 2: the inside. I think there's some optimism with that being
- 50:06Speaker 2: the case. And then in the system you mentioned, you know,
- 50:10Speaker 2: the upfield stuff. I think last year what they got
- 50:13Speaker 2: caught in Is. Early on in the season, he was
- 50:15Speaker 2: running past the quarterback a lot. He was shooting gaps
- 50:19Speaker 2: and being overly aggressive to make plays in the backfield
- 50:22Speaker 2: against the run. Teams are smart. It worked for the
- 50:24Speaker 2: first couple weeks of the season. They watch film two
- 50:27Speaker 2: and all of a sudden you look at it and
- 50:29Speaker 2: you see on key on White side, there's no contain right,
- 50:31Speaker 2: So if you run vertically up the field at Keon White,
- 50:35Speaker 2: or if the quarterback escapes out the pocket that way,
- 50:39Speaker 2: there's going to be open gaps. And that that's sort
- 50:42Speaker 2: of what got him into trouble last year. So in deary,
- 50:46Speaker 2: I think this defense is a better fit for him
- 50:49Speaker 2: if there's another level to his game. And this is
- 50:52Speaker 2: the reason why, big picture that I brought it up.
- 50:55Speaker 2: This defensive line has a chance to be really, really good.
- 50:58Speaker 2: You know, bar More, Milton Williams, Keon White. You know,
- 51:02Speaker 2: they'll probably have like a designated pass rusher and a
- 51:05Speaker 2: Harold Landry in a you know, maybe it's a Chase
- 51:10Speaker 2: On or Swinson or one of those guys will be
- 51:12Speaker 2: the nine or the seven that's all the way outside
- 51:15Speaker 2: of the tackle and really just getting up the field
- 51:18Speaker 2: and rushing. So this this group has a really good
- 51:21Speaker 2: chance to be especially those top three guys. I would
- 51:26Speaker 2: say borderline elite. If Keon White has another level, if
- 51:30Speaker 2: there's another sort of thing for them to unlock. The
- 51:33Speaker 2: other question that I had on the defensive line is
- 51:35Speaker 2: one that I had coming into the draft and was
- 51:37Speaker 2: wondering if they would address. You know, I think Tonga
- 51:40Speaker 2: is an okay player for the role that he's probably
- 51:42Speaker 2: gonna play. I still feel like they might be one
- 51:45Speaker 2: run stuff for short on the interior, like pure three
- 51:49Speaker 2: twenty pounds and movable object run stuffer. They they're counting
- 51:53Speaker 2: on plays on the other side of the line of
- 51:55Speaker 2: scrimmage a little bit right now, and that in the
- 51:58Speaker 2: past in Tennessee. Just watching some of those Titans defenses,
- 52:01Speaker 2: there's a little bit of boom er bust there with
- 52:03Speaker 2: that type of style, like you're gonna make some plays,
- 52:06Speaker 2: but you're also gonna give up some, you're gonna get
- 52:07Speaker 2: gashed some. Playing that way do they need? It's not
- 52:11Speaker 2: a full time role anymore, which is why guys like
- 52:13Speaker 2: Devon Godshaw are and here anymore. They're not gonna be
- 52:16Speaker 2: asking nose tackles to play forty to fifty percent of
- 52:18Speaker 2: the snaps. How much do you trust Toga? Are you
- 52:21Speaker 2: at all worried about the interior run defense being firm enough?
- 52:25Speaker 1: A little bit? And you know at the second level too,
- 52:28Speaker 1: you know they're they're smaller. I wonder so some of it.
- 52:31Speaker 1: I think Williams is gonna play more against the run
- 52:33Speaker 1: than he did in Philly, right, and they're gonna count
- 52:35Speaker 1: on him to grow as a run stopper. I think
- 52:37Speaker 1: they drafted Joshua Farmer to be that run stopper. He's
- 52:39Speaker 1: just not built like it. Yeah, but I would not
- 52:41Speaker 1: hate it if they added another nose tackle at some point.
- 52:44Speaker 1: I do think it would be a good addition. I'm
- 52:45Speaker 1: kind of surprised they didn't even in the UDFA market.
- 52:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it's definitely a secondary concern. It's not like I'm
- 52:53Speaker 2: not saying that this is why they're gonna go four
- 52:55Speaker 2: and thirteen. It's because they don't have a nose tackle.
- 52:57Speaker 2: But it was something that I thought was a sneaky
- 53:01Speaker 2: need in terms of depth there and just maybe some
- 53:04Speaker 2: guys that can make some plays. You know, I don't
- 53:06Speaker 2: think Jeremiah Farms is really that guy either. You know.
- 53:09Speaker 2: I liked what I saw at last year.
- 53:11Speaker 1: He might end up being that guy just because again
- 53:12Speaker 1: they don't have Bright somebody else.
- 53:15Speaker 2: But I'm with you know, I think Milton Williams is
- 53:17Speaker 2: going to have to play a lot more against the run,
- 53:18Speaker 2: and they're expecting him to be a true three down
- 53:21Speaker 2: game wrecker. And then bar More coming back healthy and
- 53:24Speaker 2: then it's kind of like, if you know Kean White
- 53:25Speaker 2: can take that next step, Now you have three guys
- 53:27Speaker 2: that can kind of wreck games upfront, and that's the expectation.
- 53:31Speaker 2: Moving to edge, your favorite position title real, very real position. Hey, listen,
- 53:37Speaker 2: I talked to Brandon Swinson's edge coach at LSU. They
- 53:43Speaker 2: literally have a coach that is his position is edge.
- 53:47Speaker 2: So it's a very real position. It's coming.
- 53:49Speaker 1: So he coaches deep but like not all edge. So
- 53:51Speaker 1: he's coaching the two hundred and ninety pounds defensive end
- 53:54Speaker 1: the same way's coaching two hundred and fifty pounds out.
- 53:56Speaker 2: He was coaching asigh linebackers in your in your parlance,
- 54:00Speaker 2: he was coaching outside.
- 54:00Speaker 1: Line side linebackers. Coach. My whole thing with edge is
- 54:03Speaker 1: like edge. There are some players that, depending on the system,
- 54:08Speaker 1: might have a different position right where you don't know
- 54:11Speaker 1: what team they're playing for. Once they are on a team,
- 54:15Speaker 1: that's where edge becomes unnecessary to me because you know,
- 54:18Speaker 1: in this system, that's how I feel about it.
- 54:20Speaker 2: It does have a purpose, right, So like, for instance,
- 54:23Speaker 2: Matthew Judon when he was a free agent, it might
- 54:26Speaker 2: be a defensive end some places, might be an outside linebackers.
- 54:28Speaker 1: Some places, how do you include me call him an edge.
- 54:30Speaker 1: I'm fine with that. Once he signed with Patriots, he
- 54:33Speaker 1: was going to be an outside linebacker. We call him
- 54:34Speaker 1: an outside linebacker. So you know, for LSU, he's outside
- 54:38Speaker 1: linebackers coach, they call it edge, but he's outside linebacker's coach.
- 54:40Speaker 1: In the draft, I'm fine calling Braden Swinton an edge
- 54:43Speaker 1: because he could play either spot.
- 54:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:45Speaker 1: The other line of demarcation for me is like does
- 54:48Speaker 1: a guy cover. If he doesn't cover, he's a defensive end.
- 54:50Speaker 1: If he covers, he's an outside linebacker.
- 54:52Speaker 2: That's fair. So these guys to me are kind of
- 54:56Speaker 2: tough because they're kind of they're kind of hybrids in
- 54:59Speaker 2: this system. This system, they're gonna be designated pass rushers.
- 55:02Speaker 2: Most of the time. They don't drop a ton off
- 55:06Speaker 2: the edge. They they will do it run through them.
- 55:08Speaker 2: And I'll tell you what I'd consider all of Harold
- 55:10Speaker 2: Landry linebacker, Uh, Chase on linebacker. Anthony Jennings, he's.
- 55:18Speaker 1: Right on that line. I'll call him a linebacker because
- 55:20Speaker 1: as we played at Alabama, but he's right on that line.
- 55:22Speaker 2: Brandon Swinson, I think he's defensive end. Elijah Ponder defensive
- 55:27Speaker 2: outside linebacker. Those are all just outside linebackers. So most
- 55:30Speaker 2: of these guys I would say, are in the outside
- 55:32Speaker 2: linebacker category. There's people call it key On White and Edge. No,
- 55:35Speaker 2: he's the defensive lineman, right, he's defensive end.
- 55:38Speaker 1: Uh.
- 55:38Speaker 2: They these guys to me are are also though gonna
- 55:41Speaker 2: play potentially a lot in a three point stance like
- 55:44Speaker 2: Harold Andry played in a three point a lot.
- 55:47Speaker 1: Yeah, you can play. You can have outside linebackers three
- 55:49Speaker 1: playing a three point stances. So the McGuinness used to
- 55:52Speaker 1: do that.
- 55:53Speaker 2: Yeah sometimes probably, although I guess some people call it
- 55:55Speaker 2: with the mguinnis a defensive end. So the biggest question
- 55:57Speaker 2: I had with this group, Uh No, now that he
- 56:00Speaker 2: can digress on the name Edge, Anthony Jennings one of
- 56:05Speaker 2: the guys you know him and Tavai that are still
- 56:08Speaker 2: kicking around from holdovers from this front seven from last year.
- 56:11Speaker 2: There aren't aren't many of them, frankly, especially at these
- 56:15Speaker 2: two spots. What's Anthony Jennings is fit here? And you know,
- 56:18Speaker 2: like what's his future because I don't necessarily see a
- 56:22Speaker 2: great fit in the scheme that they want to be playing.
- 56:25Speaker 2: And I'm curious to see what their plan is for
- 56:27Speaker 2: him because he's still on the roster, so they obviously
- 56:30Speaker 2: have some sort of plan for him, and I'm curious
- 56:32Speaker 2: to see what it is.
- 56:33Speaker 1: So I feel more that way about to Vy, like.
- 56:36Speaker 2: With Devis with my linebackers.
- 56:37Speaker 1: Okay, so we'll get to that. I think with Anthony Jennings. Look,
- 56:40Speaker 1: when he was at Alabama, he played up the field
- 56:43Speaker 1: more than he did into England.
- 56:44Speaker 2: Yeah, but then he had the injuries and then kind
- 56:46Speaker 2: of sapted his explosiveness.
- 56:47Speaker 1: One thing he's really good at or look we're going back,
- 56:50Speaker 1: was he twenty class of twenty twenty, right, he was
- 56:52Speaker 1: the COVID draft. Yeah, so they're going back five six
- 56:54Speaker 1: years now. But like, one thing he was really good
- 56:56Speaker 1: at Alabama that I thought they were going to take
- 56:58Speaker 1: more advantage of here. They didn't. I think think you
- 57:00Speaker 1: had like eleven batted passes his last year in college.
- 57:03Speaker 1: He led an Alabama team in pass breakups that had
- 57:06Speaker 1: just a loaded secondary. Yeah, an insane secondary. And so
- 57:09Speaker 1: to me, let him get up the field, let him
- 57:12Speaker 1: get into passing lanes, let him put his hands up.
- 57:14Speaker 1: That's I think the role is to allow him to
- 57:16Speaker 1: get more aggressive and be more power rusher on the
- 57:19Speaker 1: on the quarterback's throwing side, on the front side. So yeah,
- 57:23Speaker 1: that's how i'd use him, Like, I think you have
- 57:24Speaker 1: a bunch of guys Calebon Chason's a weak side rusher
- 57:27Speaker 1: to me.
- 57:27Speaker 2: Yep, he's a third down pass right, but he's.
- 57:29Speaker 1: Gonna you're gonna put him opposite the left ackle You're
- 57:32Speaker 1: gonna put him on the weak side, right, who else?
- 57:35Speaker 1: Swinston's probably weak side guy.
- 57:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I think him and Chase on are competing for
- 57:39Speaker 2: this the right the designated third down pass. Landry can
- 57:43Speaker 2: go on either side, but he's probably a weak side guy.
- 57:45Speaker 2: I think Landry is a strong side guy.
- 57:47Speaker 1: Likes more strong side guy.
- 57:48Speaker 2: Well, that's what he did in Tennessee and so especially
- 57:51Speaker 2: towards the end. So I just like where I wonder
- 57:52Speaker 2: what Jennings like is Jennings's role just back up to
- 57:55Speaker 2: Harold Landry, which, look, Harold Andry is you know what
- 57:59Speaker 2: thirty Now, it's not crazy to think that there might
- 58:02Speaker 2: be some snaps here for him, But.
- 58:03Speaker 1: Well, do you also let Jennings. Maybe Jennings puts his
- 58:05Speaker 1: hand in the dirt and Landry's standing up behind him.
- 58:08Speaker 1: Maybe they do kind of turn Jennings in more of
- 58:10Speaker 1: a full time defensive end.
- 58:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess. I mean like they're gonna play four
- 58:14Speaker 2: down though, right and you're expecting it to be Yeah,
- 58:17Speaker 2: you know, Keon White, Milton Williams, Christian barr More, Harold Landry,
- 58:22Speaker 2: with Chason maybe coming in on pass rush situations, kicking
- 58:26Speaker 2: Kean even further inside and then putting Chason on the
- 58:29Speaker 2: outside as a designated pass rusher, or maybe that ends
- 58:32Speaker 2: up being Swinson, which is sort of my number two
- 58:35Speaker 2: is like, I'm very interested to see if Swinston can
- 58:37Speaker 2: push Chase on and right away, which I think is
- 58:39Speaker 2: possible because I think Swinson's a really talented pass rusher, Yeah,
- 58:43Speaker 2: like really high end pass rush skill, so there's a
- 58:45Speaker 2: chance that he could push him right away. I just
- 58:48Speaker 2: look at at Jennings as a traditional strong side Belichick
- 58:53Speaker 2: edge setting three four linebacker. That was a long way
- 58:55Speaker 2: to say that, but like that, that's the way that
- 58:57Speaker 2: I look at him.
- 58:58Speaker 1: Well, this goes back to your point of the edge.
- 59:00Speaker 1: Can he maybe be an early down run player as
- 59:03Speaker 1: a defensive end.
- 59:05Speaker 2: A hand in the dirt guy. I just don't know
- 59:06Speaker 2: if he's big enough for that.
- 59:07Speaker 1: He's pretty, isn't he like two six?
- 59:11Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 59:11Speaker 1: I thought he's bigger than that.
- 59:12Speaker 2: I don't know. I'm not trying to write off anybody
- 59:15Speaker 2: in this exercise in May. We haven't seen anything. I'm
- 59:18Speaker 2: just it's just something that I has stuck with me.
- 59:21Speaker 2: As they turn over this roster, they've gotten away from
- 59:25Speaker 2: a lot of the typical Belichick role player type, seeing
- 59:29Speaker 2: like a Juwan Bentley, Right, he's not here anymore. Anthony
- 59:32Speaker 2: Jennings is one of the guys that's still here.
- 59:34Speaker 1: So that's part of the reason if he's still here.
- 59:36Speaker 1: I have to believe he's still here for a reason.
- 59:37Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'm curious to see what the reason is
- 59:39Speaker 2: because they know more than I do about this, so
- 59:41Speaker 2: they probably have a role for.
- 59:42Speaker 1: Him, and I think he might be an early down player.
- 59:45Speaker 2: I think he'll be an early down player no matter what.
- 59:47Speaker 2: But is he really going to be a four to
- 59:50Speaker 2: three end, like it was his hand in the dirt,
- 59:52Speaker 2: and like, I don't know, I just I know if
- 59:55Speaker 2: I see it. Linebacker, this is off ball linebacker now
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: Robert Spollyne July and Devai, Jack Gibbons, Christian Ellis, Monty,
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: Rice cam Riley. So there's one more. The biggest thing
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: with this group I think is obviously Devia's future. You know,
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: is he going to be here he is at his
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: best as they used to call it, the fixer right,
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: it was you know, off ball slash on ball, hybrid player,
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: depending on the down, depending on the situation, depending on
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: the game plan.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: Another guy that said his best is like a strong
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: side edgesetter.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: And he's a tweeter, Like he's a guy that needs
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: to be used in a specialized role that allows him
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: to stay away from certain things like coverage in space
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: as his own dropper. He's not a pure edge rusher,
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: you know, in terms of pass rush, So you don't
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: want to be using him a ton like that. So
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: like there's ways that you have to coach around some
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: of his limitations. What his future is here is along
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: with Anthony Jennings, two guys that are still hanging on that.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: I don't know if they're exactly a fit for what
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: they're going to be doing.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a Vilan's fascinating because he's survived all these cuts. Yeah,
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: and you know last year, so when he first came here,
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: he struggled playing off the ball. They moved him to
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: the edge and he was much better. Last year, he
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: had to go back off the ball because of all
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: those injuries, and he struggled again. Like I would have
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: put him in your edge category, I think he's an
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: outside linebacker. I don't think he's not off ball linebacker.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: I think he's kind of similar to Jennings. You're gonna
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: put him on the strong side on early downs. He's
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: gonna set the edge against the run. I think that's
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: where he's at his best. You know, you don't want
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: him a ton of coverage. It's not great at rushing
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: the passer. But he's a big, powerful guy that can
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: take on blocks and hold his ground. Yeah, but they
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: have Jennings to do that as well, and some other
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: guys they've brought in. So unless they're gonna keep playing
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: him off the ball where you know, well, they played.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: Him as a weak side linebacker in the past, where
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: so you know they don't want to put him on
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: the side with the double team.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: Well, whichever side they'll put him on somewhere to put
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: against the run. The thing for me is they bring
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: in all these smaller, more athletic linebackers in I kind
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: of figured, do you still want one guy that's like
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: two fifty five, two sixty that can play situationally, you know,
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: third and one right, Yeah, he comes on the field,
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: it's a run downhill, he's gonna plug a gap. Yeah,
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: And they don't really have a ton of linebackers right now.
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: They're gonna do that, especially not at that size. And
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: this guy's probably gonna play special teams as well. We
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: talked about some guys during the draft that's like, are
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: they gonna take a guy later on Day three? Maybe
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: he's just a very involved special teams player that all right,
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: you know he's he's gonna be in in a defensive
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: package with like Kiris Tonga and Jeremiah Farms. We've got
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: to stop the run, put him in, let him plug
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: a hole.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: I like that take because I thought they were gonna
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: keep Bentley around for that right. I thought that was
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: gonna be but I think they decided that he has
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: too much of a voice and too much of a
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: leadership role on the team, and.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: This is like a twenty maybe thirty.
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: So to push him all the way down the depth
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: chart like that and play him so sparingly as a
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: guy that's been a captain and been a leader of
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: the defense, that was gonna be a tough transition for
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: a lot of people. But with Tavia, maybe they feel
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: like they could they could do that sort of thing
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: and get away with it, you know, him coming on
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: the field for a Gibbons for an Ellis, you know,
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: in run stopping situations. That could definitely make some sense.
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: How what what's your what's your feelings? So overall just
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: about this linebacker group, because we've gotten a lot of
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: questions in the past, you know, do we like this
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: linebacker group? Is there any concerns about about it? You know,
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: it's it's not exactly like they have you know, Teddy Bruski,
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: Mike Rabel and William Lennis right, Like, this is not
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: a star studded linebacker group. This is much more of
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: a stylistic fit, lunch pale kind of linebacker group. You know,
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: do you feel like they have enough here at this position?
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's it's changed. It's definitely changed. Again, I
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: think that they have the ability to be more athletic
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: cover place sideline a sideline they needed that. I still
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: wouldn't and maybe it is to buy I would have
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: liked to see them keep that one guy that can
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: come in and play the run. But yeah, so it's
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: it's it's changed. It's upgrade, it's more modern, But I
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: still like just having that one old school linebacker.
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: The next Yeah, you could be right. It's a good
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: take about to Via. Maybe that's Tavia overall about the
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: linebacker group. I don't have a ton of concern about
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: them not being talented enough or having enough in this room,
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: I'll say it. And I know everything right now is
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: very positive and everything's pointed in a good direction. Patriots
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: fans are gonna love Robert Splaine. Oh yeah, Robert Spulayne
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: is he's not Ray Lewis, Like, he's not primer lacker,
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: like he's not that kind of guy. Like I get that.
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: But they need somebody in this defense from the second
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: level that's just gonna clean up the trash. They're gonna
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: watch the defensive line to get up the field. They're
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: gonna watch those guys to make the splash plays. But
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: every once in a while, when the running back squeaks through,
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: you know who can make the tackle. So that's an
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: eight yard gain and not an eighty yard game, right,
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: And that's Robert Splaine. Like he's a firecracker out there.
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: He plays with his hair on fire. He's sidelined a sideline.
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: He's a great tackler at someone's birthday. I don't know
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: what's going on out there. So that's that's Robert Splain, Like,
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: that's the type of thing that he can do. So
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: I wouldn't sleep on Spolene playing a good player.
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: Sure, I'm actually seeing if Christian Ellis can take another step.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: He was actual playing some pretty good football at the
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: end of year last year.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he's got a third down role in him. Yeah.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: I think he's a coverage guy and and a more
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: athletic guy in space that can maybe do those kinds
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: of things. All Right, we're moving at a good pace here,
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: so let's just knock these out right. Cornerback Christian Zales,
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: Carlon Davis, Marcus Jones, Alex Austin, Marcellus dial Isaiah Bolden,
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: DJ James Miles, Battle, Kobe Minor, Brandon Crossley or your cornerbacks. No,
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: so a lot of questions in this group.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: He's listed as a safety for some reason. Jordan Polk
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: is a corner.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: Okay, so I have him as safety. dB call him that.
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: Played mostly corner last year in Texas.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: So Christigan Zales and Carlon Davis are your starter's day
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: one week one, like there's no there's no questions about that.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: I actually don't hate their depth with Alex Austin and
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: dial In Bolden in terms of outside corners either, you
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: know those guys are gonna hold fully knock on wood.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: He up a ton of snaps for them this year,
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: and Gonzo and Davis, and I think Alex Austin's a
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: capable third outside corner.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: I should he should have played. I know he was hurt,
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: but like they didn't give enough chances last year.
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: The question that I have is slock corner.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: And they do not have enough depth beyond Marcus Jones.
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: So Marcus Jones is your starting nickel corner, Like if
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: you're gonna play a true corner body type and a
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: true corner skill set. Then it's Marcus Jones. Right now,
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: they've talked a little bit about playing a big nickel,
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: whether that's a third safety.
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: Or it's or probably Craig Woodson, right.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: Is it Craig Woodson? Is it? Uh? You know, Kyle Duggart,
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: Jabriel Pepper is kind of morphing into that hybrid role. Again.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: Woodson's probably the best guy to do it in terms
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: of what he's done in the past. Isaiah Bolden, I'm
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: just not ready to really count on him in any capacity.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: Like maybe he has a good camp and my opinion
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: changes there. Marcus Jones. I really like Marcus Judge as
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: a man coverage player. I like him maybe a little
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: bit more than some other people, but there's a ton
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: of size there. There's durability concerns with him always. You know.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: I still think slock corner is one of those positions
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: that I have circled in camp as like what are
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: they going to do here? You know, what's the plan?
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: Because it's a high stress role. Nowadays, it's one of
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: the more it's evolving into, I would say a premium
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: position in the NFL because of the amount of time
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: that you're at the point of attack in the run game,
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: and because of all of the inside receivers that you
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: have to cover, you know, whether that that be slide
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: receivers or even like pass catching tight ends, it's a
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: massive role in an NFL defense nowadays.
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: This is where I think you this could be where
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: so we talked about this, like, I know you like
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: Elijah Ponder, but the UDFA class leans a lot more offense. Yeah,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: Ponder is a good player, but you just look at
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: the depth in front of them. If we're going to
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: get a UDFA on defense, I think this is maybe
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: where where we get. Now Kobe Minors in the midd
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: he's not a udfavant, he projects as a slot corner
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: as well, so, but between Kobe Minor, Jordan Polk, Brandon Crossley,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: this could be a chance for one of those guys
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: to stick on the roster, could have to play special teams, right,
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: but add some depth in the slot. I think mineor
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: is somebody whould add itt both spots right, and I
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: think Crossley as well, But this could be a spot
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: where one of those udfa's or Kobe Minor steps.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: Up and it is the new strong sidelinebacker it has
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: been for years, but it's it's becoming that more and
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: more to the point where a lot of teams are
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: really using safety body types as in the slot, to
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: get some size in there and to get some run
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: instincts in there. The slot. The dream slot for any
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: NFL team right now is Brian Branch. Like, Brian Branch
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: is the absolutely the quintessential slot player at this point
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: in the NFL. In Detroit, He's the best one in
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: the league. And he's more of a safety than he
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: is a corner man. Coverage and being able to cover
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: like that isn't as always as big of a pro.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: And this is the guy that has gotten completely forgotten
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: about this offseason. Is this where you know, should we
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: bring Marte Mapu into this conversation?
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: Yeah, So here's the safeties. Kyle Duggar, Jabrill Peppers, Craig Woodson,
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: Jalen Hawkins, Marte Mapu, Marcus EPs del Pettis, Josh Minkins,
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: and I have Jordan Polk here, but you're telling me
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: he's not here, but whatever Jordan Polk.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: Also, so my two bigger questions here were obviously that
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: third safety spot, Like is it are they looking for
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: a nickel safety or are they looking for the true
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: free safety because they want Dugger or Peppers to play
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: nickel safety. You know, how do they go about that?
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: I'm packing that puzzle and then the other thing. I
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: just think it's worth mentioning since we did with Jennings
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: and Tavai, Like, are Dugger and Peppers one hundred percent
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: and trenched here?
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: Like?
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: Are they safe now as long.
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: As they're healthy?
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: I think they are because contractually they just signed those
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: extensions and it's not easy to get out of them
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: this quickly. And all that kind of stuff as well
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: play as a factor here. But how do you how
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: do you view the third safety? Because this could be
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: a big determining factor in all this puzzle putting this
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: puzzle together. In the back end, you have Dougger, you
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: have Gonzo and Davis on the outside. To me, are
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: the two only guys in this secondary that I'm one
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: hundred percent certain where they're gonna play? Like all these safeties,
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: like I you could convince me of any different type
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: of combination of you know, Craig Woodson's gonna be the
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: free safety. Craig Woodson's gonna be the nickel Craig Woodson's
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: gonna be a box safety like and same thing with
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: Peppers and Dugger Like they could be anywhere.
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: Well, you know me, I want the true free safety.
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: I'm interested to see where Marcus steps is at health wise. Yeah,
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: and you know how he looks. He's played, you know,
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: some good football, but he's coming off torn acl Craig
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: Woodson if he's back there. If you're gonna put a
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: safety near closer to the line of scrimmage, it should
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: be Duggar Peppers. That's where those guys are. Better. Keep
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: those guys close to the line of scrimmage. Find somebody
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: else to play on the back end, whether it's Apps,
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: whether it's Woodson.
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm with you. I think Kyle Dugar and Pepper's
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: one of those two guys. They've both kind of done
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: it in the past and taken turn playing as like
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: a nickel safety. I think those two guys can be
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: really good players in that role. They can blitz, they
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: can set the edge against the run, they can come
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: downhill at the line of scrimmage, they can handle some
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: of the more stressful zone drops that like a linebacker type,
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: you wouldn't necessarily want to handle. You know, if they
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: have to drop into you know, a zone in cover
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: three right and they have to pick up the cross
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: or coming from the other side of the formation, like
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: they can do those types of things. They can play,
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: you know, in different roles, you know, run the shoot
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: right in a Tampa two or in a quarters coverage
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: if they if somebody goes to split the safeties right
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: up the middle in cover two, like I could see
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: Kyle Dugger being able to carry that safety. Okay, that
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: that tight end or whoever's running up the middle a
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: lot better than a linebacker. So I like them in
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: those roles. That would mean Craig Woodson most likely or
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: Marcus Epps potentially would have to then be the true
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: free safety. I think that's their best defense. Yeah, Dugger,
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: Pepper's in the slot, the other guys playing the strong
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: safety box role Woodson or EPs up top. Like, I
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: hope that's what we get to eventually with this group.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: I'd feel pretty good about that secondary with Gonzo and
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: Davis on the outside of that group. In the middle,
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: you feel pretty good about it. Really quickly. On the kickers, yes, especially,
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: they have to cut you off.
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: I was getting ready to cut you off and be like, don't.
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: Forget Bryce Berenger, John Parker Romo, ye, Andy Borgolis and
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: Julian Ashby. So we know Berenger and Ashby are gonna
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: be your punter and long snapper Alex Bart Is there
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: a kicker competition?
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: I mean there is.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: I don't think there is. Well, well, they drafted the guy.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: They're gonna go through one, whether or not there's anything
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: behind it or it's just academic. Like I let me
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: put it this way, I think John Parker Romo is
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: gonna be on the team through the end of camp,
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: okay or club maybe they or before. But like I
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: last year, it didn't feel kind of neck and neck
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: going in last year, Yes, right like this, people were saying, well,
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: just you know, Ryland had an advantage because he was
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: on the team. Maybe a little bit. This to me
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: feels like Parker like it's Romo's job to or sorry,
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: it's it's job to lose, right.
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: I mean, Barguallace would have to be terrible.
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: Right, he's starting ahead, And honestly, I think they want
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: to see maybe just how the kid handles some pressure.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: Maybe just have another guy here see he handles it.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: So it should be Borgollis. This is not as much
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: of a toss up as last year, but I think
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: they are still going to go through the exercise to
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: see how the kid handles it and just to make.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: Sure, Okay, that's it. And then I have Brendan Schooler
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: as a cover Jase and I I believe, you know
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: kick covering special teams days.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: Matthew Slater, I think he might still play. I wouldn't
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: Longhorn package stick around.
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: It was effective. Yeah, I don't think that was like
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: the one wrinkle that I'm not coaching staff.
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: Last year that worked, so I don't think that goes
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: away entirely.
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: Now maybe it looks different, but he was able to
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: get heat, was aggressive and getting after the quarterback.
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: That's what they want from there. He was essentially playing
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: linebacker more than safety.
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he was, and I say this a
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: little the tongue. Yeah, he was like legitimately one of
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: their best pass rushers. But it was effective, so it worked.
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: I kind of hope that doesn't go away entirely. It
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: might look different and it might not be as much,
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: but you know, keep that in place a little bit. Yeah,
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: I'm with you. I have him in the coverage area
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: right now, he's gonna be on the team, But I
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: just I do wonder this coaching staff tries him out
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: on defense at all.
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: I do wonder. I mean, they've been pretty walked into
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: the kicker handling kickoffs the last few years. It's not
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: like that everywhere. I do wonder if they open up
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: open up for kickoffs between Borgolos and Baringer, they're both
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: bigger guys, they can both handle themselves and coverage, they
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: both have a big leg. I wonder if they open
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: that up or you know, you see some teams now
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: and the Patriots kind of flirted with this last year
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: in camp. I don't think it ever trying to remember
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: if they ever did in a game like because it's
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: so specialized now and all right, we want to put
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: the ball in this spot, on this trajectory. We want
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: to put the back here with this kind of kick.
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: If there is a Bourgalis kickoff package and a Bearinger
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: kickoff package just based on their ability to hit different kicks.
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: Interesting, all right, So that's the defense and the special teams,
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: because we had to get special teams in there. So
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: the last forty five minutes of the shows all you guys,
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: we got calls, we got emails, so let's start it off.
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: Hopefully is still there. What's up, Patty and aguam, how
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: are we doing?
- 1:15:26Speaker 7: I'm still here, guys.
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: What's up? Patty?
- 1:15:29Speaker 7: Not too much. I just want to go over a
- 1:15:31Speaker 7: few things. I'll make them quick, heavan. Maybe Alex can't
- 1:15:35Speaker 7: get you sold on golfing, but dude, I'm telling you
- 1:15:38Speaker 7: maybe once you're a little bit older, there's there's nothing
- 1:15:41Speaker 7: more relaxed and then grabbing a few beers, throwing them
- 1:15:45Speaker 7: in a cooler, getting on a golf cart and just
- 1:15:47Speaker 7: having a good time. You know, Because I don't know
- 1:15:49Speaker 7: about Alex. I don't really play competitively. No, just go
- 1:15:52Speaker 7: to play to have fun in it.
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: So that I think that's my problem, and I think, Patty,
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: you're right, maybe my older ages will go away. I
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: was a good athlete, I'll put that out there. But
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: I was extremely competitivele You know me when I golf
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: the part that frust up I stink, And you.
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: Know me, I'm very competitive and I'm not good, and
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: I make it work. I make it more.
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: I can't do like leisurely, like past time, like if
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: I'm playing a sport, I'm competing.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: If you know, but if you go in knowing you're bad,
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: it's easier because you're just trying to get better. On
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: the other side, though, somebody in the chat did offer
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: to buy you a gaming console, so one step closer.
- 1:16:28Speaker 7: Yeah, listen, you know if you if you game, dude,
- 1:16:30Speaker 7: I'll go buy Accountable. If you guys go on Twitch.
- 1:16:33Speaker 7: I've never been on Twitch, but if you, if the
- 1:16:35Speaker 7: two of you make that happen, I'll make it happen too,
- 1:16:38Speaker 7: just so I can, just so I can have more
- 1:16:40Speaker 7: of your context. Because Ny, when it comes to you
- 1:16:42Speaker 7: that the last two things I'll touch on, it's funny, guys,
- 1:16:45Speaker 7: we're going over roster reset. I don't think that the
- 1:16:50Speaker 7: roster construction is done by any means of course. I
- 1:16:53Speaker 7: mean they got to get through cuts and everything. But
- 1:16:55Speaker 7: I think the final fifty three, I think they're gonna
- 1:16:59Speaker 7: I'm I think they're gonna add a receiver somehow, some way.
- 1:17:04Speaker 7: But Alex, I think around last year, around this time,
- 1:17:07Speaker 7: and this is the last thing. I gave you a name, Mosey.
- 1:17:09Speaker 7: The last year, two years ago, I gave you the
- 1:17:11Speaker 7: name of Joe Griffon, junior from Boston College Wide receiver.
- 1:17:14Speaker 7: He didn't pan out, but I'm going to give you
- 1:17:17Speaker 7: another guy to look at. And I know it's way
- 1:17:19Speaker 7: too early to get into college football. And he shares
- 1:17:23Speaker 7: a name with with with another wide receiver. But Elijah Moore,
- 1:17:27Speaker 7: six foot four x guy, two hundred and five pounds,
- 1:17:30Speaker 7: plays from Florida State. He's I think he was a
- 1:17:33Speaker 7: red shirt freshman last year, but he's got a lot
- 1:17:37Speaker 7: of He's getting a lot of play right now. I
- 1:17:39Speaker 7: mean there's a lot of people are thinking that he's
- 1:17:41Speaker 7: gonna have a breakout year. And you know, maybe two
- 1:17:45Speaker 7: years from now.
- 1:17:45Speaker 6: We don't.
- 1:17:46Speaker 7: We're too good and we don't have enough capital to
- 1:17:49Speaker 7: trade for Jeremiah Smith. But that's the name to if
- 1:17:52Speaker 7: he has a big year, big couple of years to
- 1:17:54Speaker 7: look out. And that's all I got.
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: All right, Thanks Patty, thanks for the call. Every buddy
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: is gonna try to get me into golf. I'm telling you,
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: it's like, oh, it's like Peloton, Like, oh, you gotta
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: try Peloton. It's not like you can't.
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: Drink well, I guess you could drink a drink Peloton.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: I'm not. I'm just I I actually would prefer to
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: Peloton then to golf. I'm not gonna lie, horrible take
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: I'm not gonna lie.
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: It takes a long time to get good at golf.
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: And if you are competitive, I'm the exact same way.
- 1:18:25Speaker 5: It's like, oh, I'm just gonna go hit the driving
- 1:18:26Speaker 5: range for you know, twenty bucks a pop for four
- 1:18:29Speaker 5: months before I could step onto a course.
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: It's just like I get three or four holes in
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: and I I just I'm done, Like it's it's it's
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: just not for me.
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: But it's not if you just don't expect yourself to
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: be that good.
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: It's not even realistic that though. It's like I'm terrible,
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: Like I'm like, I think this is ultimate lazy. Yeah,
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: like if I've never done it. Uh, I played one
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: round with a card. I played like probably like five
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: rounds of golf in my life. Four of them I walked,
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: and one of them, so I will say some of
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: those numbers are not used.
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: I used to always walk. And then like two years ago,
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: has placed my buddies at a really hilly course and
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: we're like going up to the last holes, like this
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: big hill in the woods, and we were just like
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: feeling it. We got up to the top of that, we
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: looked each other and we're like, we're too old to
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: be walking. So like all occasionally walk nine. I play
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: with the cart most of the time. Now if I'm
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: playing eighteen, I'm absolutely playing with car.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: I definitely could be swayed by the cart.
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: I we'll get you out there this summer. This is
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: gonna happen.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: No, Yes, Chris is in the original England, so across
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: the pond. What's up, Chris, Chris, you're there, all right,
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: give us a call back, Chris and we'll get you on.
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: All right, let's get to some of these emails. Lots
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: of emails pulling pouring in and I can't speak. You know,
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: this guy Brownie's emailing in my college roommates. Ok, you
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: knew Brownie back in the day.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: Is this about the Eagles?
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: It's about the schedule release. But yeah, I assume that
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: Brad is like me with the Celtics, like I still
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: wear the Championship had for the Celtics. Yeah, I guarantee
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: you that he's still walking around in the Championship had
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: for the Eagles. So Brad's a big Eagles fan. Shout
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: out to my guys in PA. But what is your
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: favorite NFL stadium you have traveled to. This's a good question.
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: I do keep track. I think I'm like, this is
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: a humble brag, but I think I've been to like
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: twenty four.
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: Do you have a running list?
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: I do keep track. I can pull it up real quick.
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: And how many have I been to?
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: It's probably h much easier at this point to tell
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: you the stadiums I haven't been to than the ones
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: I have been to. So I've been to twenty four.
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: I was right. So the stams I haven't been to
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: Carolina Bank of America and Carolina lumin in Seattle, which
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: is a bummer. I can't wait to get to that
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: one Energy in Houston. Never been there, Raymond James, and Tampa,
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: which I'll check off this year, which I'm excited about.
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: I never been to so far because it's so new.
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: I haven't been yet. So those are the the what, one, two, three, four,
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: five stadiums I haven't been to. So my answer for
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: my favorite is different from my I have two different
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: answers to this question. There's a difference between the my
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: favorite stadium I've been to and like the most historic,
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: like coolest venue I've been to. So the nicest stadium
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: in the league is in Vegas, and it's not particularly close,
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: like the Raiders Stadium is unbelievable. Like the only one
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: that's come close is is is Jerry World, Like that's
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: the only one that's even in the same stratosphere. I
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: would say the like Lambo's Lambeau, Like, yeah, like Lambo's Lambo.
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: It's it's it's just there's a feel to it, like
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: you walk. It's not an impressive stadium. It's it's a
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: little bit like Jillette. It's kind of just a stadium.
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: Uh But you go there and it's just you know,
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: you see Curly Lambo and Bart Starr and you know
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: all of the great Packers just like around Ring of Honor,
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: and you just know the history and you know, like
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: the players that have played in that stadium. There's absolutely
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: no other feeling besides uh No, I'd say Lamba is
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: probably in its own category in that regard.
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: I think my favorite people are gonna be surprising when
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: me say this. I have two that are towards top Buffalo.
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: Well that same just stinks though, but it's that's what
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: football should be. It's loud, it's rowdy, it's metal bleachers,
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: it's open, it's old school.
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: That's about the kids.
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: I know, it's a shame. That's that's a real football statement.
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: That's a college environment. And then Pittsburgh's really cool too.
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: Pittsburgh's all right. I've kind of gotten over Pittsburgh as
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: we've been so many.
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: Times that that was it's the same thing again.
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: I know that sounded.
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: It's it's a cool stadium, elite, media spread, elite. But
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: it's also like it's a it's a cool building, it's
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: a historic building. All that. I know. My lead the
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: I actually can answer my least favorite easier than my
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: favorite release, met Life. Yeah, it's just it and I
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: understand why it's like this, but it's faceless.
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: So I describe MetLife to people like, you know, like
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: when Lego has like football stadium, it's just the Lego
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: seen it's literally like football stadium, Like that's what I
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: would call it. Like that's it. That's all it is.
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: It is just generic football stadium.
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: It's hard to get to. Yeah, we got lost one
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: year driving every work for sealing.
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: It's not good. So I would say, just.
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: From a media standpoint, yeah, for one o'clock game, Yeah,
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: the sun comes right into the press box and you
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: get cooked.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: That is That's what those are. The type that you
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: tell me that I complain about things.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: That that's fair. Yeah, so well allegiant Honestly, anybody's sitting
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: in that corner, but yeah, allegiant. Yeah.
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: In at and T in Dallas and walking into Jerry
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: World and walking out into this just it's just huge
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: and it's it's impressive. It's an impressive stadium for the history.
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: I would say definitely Lambo is one of its own arrowhead.
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: It just the atmosphere arrows just off the.
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: Chuck Well that that that's me with buffal I haven't
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: been any of those I have been to. So Atlanta
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: was the same thing. Like I walked into Atlanta. Atlanta's impressive.
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: And I was there before the Super Bowl because I
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: went for Alabama Florida State when they were one and
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: three in the country a couple of years ago. And
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: it's like, I mean that is a football cathedral, Like
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: that building is so impressive. Absolutely, and then so I
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: haven't been for an event, but I went on a
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: tour when I was in college. Minnesota stadium is very
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: impressive too, and I.
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: Like how that's a good shout.
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: I'm pretty anti indoor stadium generally as a rule. I
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: love but I know because the nerds. But as far
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: as indoor stadiums go, look they don't let the weather
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: get in, which sucks, but there is a ton of
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: natural light in there compared to a lot of indoor stadiums.
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: Minnesota was one of the cooler environments. The one time
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: I've been to Minnesota, and we're gonna go back potentially
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: this year. But the one time that I went to
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: Minnesota was Thanksgiving night Hunter across the goal line and
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: they had a great in game presentation. The skull chant
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: hits it.
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: I want to see the skull chant like again. I
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: went for a tour. I wasn't there for a game fantastic.
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: Like it definitely, Uh it hits like, it's really cool.
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: Their intros were really cool. They they had fake snow
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: like coming down and like real cute. You had fake
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: snow coming down and he just you know, skull skull
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: like really cool and you know, mate, hopefully we get
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: there with like Drake may or something like that. But
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: when they do the individual player intros and you have
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: a player of Justin Jefferson's caliber, like in its inside
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: to the noises. I mean it is like God himself
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: just walked onto the football field. Like that's how it
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: feels like. And it was really cool that night. You know,
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: it's prime time Thanksgiving night. He was just coming off
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: that game in Buffalo where he made the crazy one
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: handed catch and justin Jefferson comes onto the field and
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: it is just the one of the loudest atmospheres you'll
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: ever be in.
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: What was I gonna say, Indy was cool that that
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: Builly's huge?
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's like, you know a lot of these domes, uh, Indy, Arizona,
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: you know, not necessarily like the most historic of places
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: or anything, but they're well designed. They're domes. They're indoors,
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: so they're big and impressive. You know, Arizona is one
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: of those places that it's so obvious why they hosted
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: super Bowls there, Like it's the weather, It's yeah, it's
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: it's just a really nice layout. All right, there's your
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: stadium minute. It's a good question for schedule release day.
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: Jeff emails in from La and he had we talked
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: about this. We touched on it briefly. Uh, why is
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: nobody giving West Sweitzer a chance that left guard. Cole Strange,
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: Light and Robinson and City so get named the most
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: and we never hear about Schweitzer. Well, he has started
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: more games than those guys, and that was what he
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: brought up, which is all all.
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: Fare, I think, all but what four or five of
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: those are pre twenty twenty.
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I I used the comparison earlier. I stand by it.
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: You know, Wes Schweitzer, to me, is very similar to
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: Michael Jordan last year. If nobody is ready from that
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: younger group to play right away out of the gate,
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: then you start Wes Sweitzer the first month, you know,
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: five weeks of the season, whatever the case may be,
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: and you get you know, those guys ready, but like
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: you shouldn't be in that position. Cole Strange is going
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: into year three, Leydon Robinson's going into year two, City
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: sw is going into year two, year three, Cole Stran
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: going into year four, year two three, Jesus Christ two
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: twenty three four four, Yeah, he's twenty year four Jesus
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: So yeah, like those guys aren't rookies anymore where you're
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: worried about them being ready to play the position. So
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: I think that's why they shouldn't need Schweitzer. That doesn't
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: mean he won't make the team. They shouldn't need them.
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: So Schweitzer started six two games in his career thirteen
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: of those all but thirteen were before we're twenty twenty
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: or earlier. He's only started two games in the last
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: two years, none last year. He's only played ten games
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: total in the last two years.
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, because he's he's really a career backup, Like
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: he's a nice backup to have. Like, those guys have value,
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: you know, sometimes nowadays they're they're veteran practice squad players,
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: but they have value because they've played games in the league.
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: They've been around. Like if you needed a spot start,
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: like would they spot start Wes Schweitzer over you know,
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: a rookie or a you know, Jack Conley or something
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: like probably right, you know, that's like the why those
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: types of guys are around. Chris has a question and
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: he We've gotten this question a bunch two as well,
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: just in all the shows, like Mac Collins and his
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: security on the roster. You know, Chris lays it out.
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: I'm not going to read the whole email, but you know,
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: why is Mac Hollins considered a lock. I think both
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: of us have sort of said he's a lock. I
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: lock might be strong. I think he's a probable player
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: to make the roster. I think there's a world where
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: he doesn't, because it's not like they have all this
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: money tied up into him that it's impossible. But I
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: think it's a couple of reasons. To me, they need
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: a glue guy in that room. And I know that
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: not a lot of people want to look into that
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: too much and don't like the culture stuff, but the
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: reality is that room last year was a mess and
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: they're trying to change the culture of that room, so
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: they kind of need that glue guy type. Matt Collins
- 1:29:28Speaker 2: throughout his career has been known to be that he
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: has familiarity and Josh mcdaniels's offense. He played with McDaniels,
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: had his best year under McDaniels in Vegas. We're talking
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: about Schweitzer as being a bridgie type player, like Matt
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: Collins to me, in terms of his role on the field,
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: is sort of a bridgie player to Kyle Williams, Like
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: if Kyle Williams is not ready to play the X
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: week one of the season right out of the Gate
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: in September. Matt Collins can go out there, he can
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: run the wind sprints, he can be the sacrificial X,
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: and they don't have to throw guys like Kyle Williams
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: directly into the fire right away if they don't want to.
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: Special teams stand out. I think that has to be
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: mentioned too. But I would just find it hard to
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: believe that MATC Collins isn't here. I know not. Everybody's
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: not super impressed with him as a player. I think
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: he's a little underrated. Like I'm not saying he's Randy Moss,
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: but like his year in Buffalo last year wasn't terrible,
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: like if you watched the film, like his film isn't terrible.
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: I don't think he's as bad as some people think,
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: but I understand that he's not the most exciting out
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: of this group either way. Where do you stand right
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: now with mac Collins?
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't. I mean, he's maybe one step below
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: a lock, but he'd certainly be as surprised as a
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: as a cut like they need an AX. He can
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: play the acts. Like you said, the leadership stuff, I
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: think you pretty much nailed that.
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: So this is from Ashton in Canada. He is wondering
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: what we think Pot Douglas's steeling is and where does
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: he need to improve on to achieve his ceiling? These
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: things like I would say, are you good over there?
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: I think so. I want to make sure it's like
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: in the right spot, so he keeps all right, I mean,
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: where he's improved, just availability, right, He's been kind of
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: banged up his first couple of years, so staying on
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: the field and that that's the big thing to me.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: Like on top of that, I think he can be,
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: you know, a really good secondary option. Maybe work on
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: his contested catch ability a little bit, but like I mean,
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: I think he is a legitimate top three receiver in
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: an NFL wide receiver room.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: His ceiling, I think he's close to it. Yeah, I
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: think he's right about there. He's a third receiver, like
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: he's a slot and eleven personnel, right, I don't think
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: he's a base receiver. It's gonna play in your base packages.
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: He's a slot only fifty sixty percent ideally, But when
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: he comes in, he makes an impact and he makes place.
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: His ability to separate against man coverage is good, it's
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: above average to really good. Trade of his I would
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: say the next step for him on the field is
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: really learning how to run routes against zone a little
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: bit more consistently. Sometimes when he sees zone, he doesn't
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: always find those pockets, right, He's not always very quarterback
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: friendly and doesn't find the pockets. And he's not the
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: biggest the targets to begin with, so that works against
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: him too. But you'll see, like last year a couple
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: of times where you know, the big one is obviously
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: the interception to end the game against the Rams, but
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: like just in general, where Drake may really wants him
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: to sit or settle in the zone and he's kind
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: of still running and like then he like kind of
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: comes back late to it and maybe has to make
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: an adjustment on a catch. You know that that's what
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: takes those types of slot guys from like what Pop
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: Douglas is doing right now over the first two years
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: of his career to being like Wes Welk or Julian
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: Edelman volume right, one hundred and twenty plus targets is
- 1:32:47Speaker 2: can you have developed that sixth sense and that ability
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: to find the openings when you do see zone. It's
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: not all going to be man to man and it's
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: not all going to be matchup base. You have to
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: be able to get open there. So I would say
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: that that's the biggest thing for him as well. All Right,
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: this question, I think is an obvious answer, but like
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: we can just kind of couch it like this, which
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: rookie do you think will have the biggest impact on
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: the season. Let's take Will Campbell out of it, because
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: I thinks OBUs.
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: Should be Kyle Williams. Ideally it's Kyle Williams, like they need.
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: He's in a position where like there's not a ton
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: of of competition for him, especially if Dis isn't going
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: to start the year. You know, they should be throwing
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: the ball more with Drake May and he's an explosive player.
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: I'm gonna say, Kyle Williams, I'm.
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: Gonna say I agree, But just for the sake of
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: being different, I think Travon Henderson is gonna have a
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: big impact. Okay, I think Trayvon Henderson has a chance
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: to be My guess is that it might not manifest
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: itself in him being the true number one running back
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: in the rotation and snaps or a volume standpoint, But
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: I think his big playability is just gonna be infectious. Like,
- 1:33:57Speaker 2: I think it's gonna be hard to keep him off
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: the field when they really need points because of how
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: he can flip the field. And I think that's gonna
- 1:34:05Speaker 2: be just huge for them in general. They just really
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: haven't had that here in quite some time, and I
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: think they might have it with Kyle Williams too, But
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: I feel better just in terms of actually being able
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: to take explosive plays, chunks out, whatever you want to
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: call it, Like I think Trayvon Henderson's gonna do that instantly,
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: whereas with Kyle Williams, like there might be more of
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: adjustment with the routs in the role and all that
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: kind of stuff, but both those guys should be able
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: to make an instant impact in terms of all of that.
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: All Right, this is another question here from Barton Poll
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: and that bart I'm sorry I haven't gotten to this
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: question sooner because he's emailed in like three weeks in
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: a row trying to get to this question. So I
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: wanted to ask about Will Campbell and his potential potential
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: transition to left guard, which he's not gonna do, but
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: it's okay. I know it's often said that it's the
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: worst case scenario, but he's said that he's heard multiple
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: people mention that his stance at left tackle might make
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: the transition up because he'd likely have to adjust his stance.
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: So he does have an at least at LSU, And
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: I don't know if he was coached this way. Emery Jones,
- 1:35:10Speaker 2: the right tackle at LSU, did it too, but not
- 1:35:13Speaker 2: quite as pronounced as Will Campbell. Will Campbell does have
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: like an upright stance. I'm not talking about how he
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: plays once this ball is snap, but like when he
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: actually gets the line of scrimmage, he does have like
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: sort of an unorthodox upright stance to him. But what
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: I think is really good about him is that once
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: the ball is snapped, like he's got great sink and
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: lower body flexibility to get his pass down instantly. It's
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: just the way he stands literally, just what he literally stands.
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: It's like he got with the weird batting stands.
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: Yeah, where the way the ball is snap now, is
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: that something that needs to be fixed or changed? I
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: don't know. I would tend to lean towards don't mess
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: with it unless it becomes a problem.
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: It was kind of like how they would talk about
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: Drake May's throwing motion when we talked to them about that, Like,
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: if he starts to lose control of the ball and
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: we see a lot more of those sprays than maybe
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: you want to tighten it up and change you know,
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: the actual arm motion. But if his accuracy is fine,
- 1:36:09Speaker 2: and then why would you mess with it? Right, You're
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: just messing with it just to mess with it because
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: it doesn't look aesthetically great. I think the same thing
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: is true with Wilkes Well.
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: I I would again I like the batting stands comparison
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: because a lot of these guys with weird bating stands
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: is right, like Kevin Euclis, he's all the way up
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: here and it's like, you know, his heads in his
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: arms or whatever. As the pitcher gets ready to throw,
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: you watch and he kind of sinks back into a
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: more normal stance standing that weighs more just like a
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: timing mechanism. And a lot of these guys name anybody
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: with a weird batting stance, right, Garry Sheffield, Gary Schiff,
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: well know Gary Sheffield section exception of this. But Chuck
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: Nawblock is what like he'd have the bat all the
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: way over there but gets in with position, whari, he's
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: more loaded up as the pitch is coming. Like, as
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: long as you can get into that position in time,
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: like you said, it's not an issue.
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: That's the way I look at it now. I don't
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: know if that.
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: I'll give you another one. Tyreek Hill, Yeah, Tyreek Hill
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: just stands there before the snap. He does it. You
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: wouldn't coach or ash and Genty, you wouldn't coach you
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: got a stand like that. But they can get to
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: where they need to get to once the play starts,
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: and that's ultimately what you care about.
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: Ash and Genty is a good comparison because he has
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: that weird like upright, he just stand there, literally just stands.
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: I think Sheffield kept doing that thing until like he
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: was really ready to swing. Maybe I'll just remember it.
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: All right, let's get back to the phones. Brad is
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: in Ohio. It's up Brad.
- 1:37:28Speaker 8: Hey, crew, how are you doing today?
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: How are you pretty good?
- 1:37:32Speaker 8: I got a couple of quick questions, real quick. You
- 1:37:36Speaker 8: know you're all insightful, so so much so. Uh. I
- 1:37:40Speaker 8: just want to I want to ask, do you think
- 1:37:43Speaker 8: that it'll be McDaniels or digs that will help pop?
- 1:37:47Speaker 8: William or Polk kind of transcend to the next you know,
- 1:37:53Speaker 8: be able to like we were talking about get better,
- 1:37:56Speaker 8: you know, based on which one of those players do
- 1:37:59Speaker 8: you look making the largest lead or or benefit to
- 1:38:04Speaker 8: our team? And the first question I had and then
- 1:38:08Speaker 8: which guard given city sales and left guard? Like I
- 1:38:12Speaker 8: believe that Han said that before uh his position of
- 1:38:17Speaker 8: you know, originality and which one would fit best in
- 1:38:21Speaker 8: Josh McDaniel's offense with you know, given the three we
- 1:38:27Speaker 8: have that you have just mentioned, And then do you
- 1:38:30Speaker 8: think the fullback and depre because of the blocking blocking
- 1:38:34Speaker 8: ability in the way McDaniels structures the offense both have
- 1:38:39Speaker 8: an opportunity to make the team. And then my last
- 1:38:45Speaker 8: the question or you know statement was with with Diggs
- 1:38:51Speaker 8: and Born in the of the you know, the ones
- 1:38:55Speaker 8: that's going to teach mostly about helping the guys. Do
- 1:38:59Speaker 8: you think Baker out or will it be Booty in
- 1:39:03Speaker 8: your opinion?
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: Thank you, Thanks Brad that those were a lot of questions,
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: so we'll try to get to all of them. In
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: terms of receivers, you know, Polk, Baker, Williams. I think
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: we're all the most optimistic about Kyle Williams right now,
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: because he's the unknown guy or he's the rookie we
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: haven't seen before. I'm still and again, I the way
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: I would try to phrase this, I guess is like
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: I'm hoping for the best, but expecting the same out
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: of Jalen Polk. Like I hope that it works out
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: for him. I hope that last year. There's a lot
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: of excuses the wrong word. There's a lot of caveats
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: to last year for Jalen Polk. Wasn't a great coaching staff,
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: it wasn't a great situation for a rookie wide receiver.
- 1:39:43Speaker 2: There's a lot of reasons to point to it and
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: just kind of be willing to throw out Jalen Polk's
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: rookie season. With that being said, though, I just there's
- 1:39:52Speaker 2: not a ton of precedent for a player coming in
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: as a rookie, having such little production in so much
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: many struggles as a rookie, and then going on to
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: blossoming into being a true contributor. Like it just I'm
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: honest saying you can't be an NFL player, but to
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: go from that to being instantly like a good player
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: or the player that people projected coming out of college,
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: you know, Kobe Meyers, Tyler Boyd type of receiver. I
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: just think there's a long way to go for that
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: to be a reality. And I would say the same
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: thing about Javon Baker. I'm not writing them off. I'm
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: just not expecting anything. I think that's like, you know,
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: sort of the difference, Whereas with Kyle Williams, I kind
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: of have some expectations for him right now, and I
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: think Kyle Williams, they have a chance to really hit
- 1:40:35Speaker 2: with Kyle Williams, and I'm expecting them to almost in
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: a lot of ways.
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll answer the guard one. To me, City Show's
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: the favorite because he is a true left guard, and
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: I think he plays the game more as more of
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: a maller than the other two, which is what they want,
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: which is what Josh McDaniels historically wanted in his guard.
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: So to me, like City Show's the best fit. Does
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: that mean he's the best player. We'll find out, But
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: remember he was. He had a good year as a rookie,
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: and he had really good summer last year before he
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: got hurt. He just never really bounced back from that.
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: Yeah, it's definitely possible, and he's the biggest out of
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: the three guys, just from a measurable standpoint, which you know,
- 1:41:07Speaker 2: if they want to get back to those like mauling
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: guards and in the McDaniels, you know, downhill scheme. I
- 1:41:12Speaker 2: think Laden Robinson. He's smaller, like literally smaller, but he's
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: also kind of like a maler and has play strained
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: to him. Really. The only guy that I don't think
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: fits is Strange, like Cole Strange is his own guard.
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: No, he's a center in this scene.
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: Yeah, but he's he's I think both those guys Robinson
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: and and so mix it up in a run game
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: and like have a good solid foundational play strangth to
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: their game that would lend themselves to playing in more
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: of like a gap scheme or a downhill scheme like
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: we've seen from McDaniels in the past. Email here from
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: Dave and San Jose. His question is what trade value
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: if any do any of the wide receivers have even
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: a late round pick just talking about the log jam
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: numbers wise that wide receiver. I still think the guy
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: that has the most value, which is the reason why
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: he's been floated in rumors, is Kaishan Boody. Yeah, and
- 1:42:03Speaker 2: I think that's why his name is out there and
- 1:42:05Speaker 2: nobody else's name is out there. Kendrick Bourne is kind
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: of going into a season where he needs to, you know,
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: rebuild his stock in an NFL hierarchy, just because of
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: last year in the ACL two years ago. Kaishan Boody
- 1:42:18Speaker 2: to me, seems like the guy that maybe even they're
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: trying to sell, like frankly, like, you know, just with
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: all the rumors that have been out there, he's been
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: somebody that's just there's always a reason why the guy's
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: name's out there. And I would say it's not because
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: they necessarily don't see him being on the team or
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: having a role on the team. I think it's more that, hey,
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: if we can get a third or fourth round pick
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: for Kashan Boody, wouldn't it be a little bit crazy
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: not to do that.
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it's clearly him And I'll say this on Bourne.
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: If Bourne does enough this summer to prove that he
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: has trade value, they should probably be keeping him. Yeah,
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: because it means he's playing well and we know that
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: it works with him and Josh McDaniels.
- 1:42:59Speaker 2: That's fair, all right. Uh, Jake says there would one
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: be an audience for Catch twenty two on Twitch playing
- 1:43:10Speaker 2: dynasty in CDB. Do you does that mean anything to you?
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: Yeah? So, uh what is CDB?
- 1:43:16Speaker 2: Maybe he meant CFB CFB Yeah, so well so it
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: basically I think what he meant, because I've had people
- 1:43:22Speaker 2: ask me about this, like we're instead of playing against
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: each other, like we do a franchise and we build
- 1:43:27Speaker 2: the team.
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: I'll let you call the place and me the quarterback.
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: I'll be the receiver.
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: So he said, Uh, what he would want us to do, yeah,
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: is to each build our own separate teams in the
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: same conference in college football and then play each other.
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: See. I feel like it'd be better and Madden, because
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: then we'd be doing like free agency in the draft
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: and stuff. Because you're not You're not going to get recruiting.
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: That's going to frustrate you. I know that.
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: But is it like is it like do they have
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: like scenes? Like is it like you walk you walk
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: into something. It's like you have like make an elevator pitch.
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: You can't actually see it, but so like they you
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: have a certain number of points, right, Yeah, And depending
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: on your coach and your school, you have different Every
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: school has a different number of points to work with.
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: But each week you use you like spend your points.
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: You could what is it you can DM recruits. You
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: don't get to choose what you say, but like these
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: are what you're spending your timeline. DM recruits talk to family.
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: There's one that's like set in the house, which is everything,
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: and I forget what the middle one is. I never
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: use that. But then there's also like you can like scout.
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: You can spend time scouting. You can spend time just
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: doing other things things like that. I'm out, Yeah I don't.
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: That's not for you. No, I think it would be
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: me versus you. We'd figure out some way to do it.
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: In Maden er CFB. But the people want to watch it.
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: The people do want to watch it.
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: Brownie emails back in as someone that has golfed with
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: me before, which is true. I think I've golfed with
- 1:44:56Speaker 2: him at least once. And he says, as someone who
- 1:44:58Speaker 2: has golf with Evan, and I would agree with him
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: better to stay off the course. But a cart would help,
- 1:45:04Speaker 2: is what he said. Yeah, I Brownie knows, he knows
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: how I have no patience for the game of golf.
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: Ryan is in Virginia, what's up, Ryan, You guys hear me?
- 1:45:15Speaker 4: Yes, right, I got two comments and hypothetical that I'll
- 1:45:20Speaker 4: listen to go off there. I understand that, like you said, Mac,
- 1:45:24Speaker 4: college to see the blue guy. I know that in
- 1:45:26Speaker 4: the past people have seen Kendricks Born as.
- 1:45:28Speaker 8: The blue guy.
- 1:45:29Speaker 4: I also think that like my comments though, is that
- 1:45:31Speaker 4: he's a sneaky devices, especially with the Bailly zappy and
- 1:45:34Speaker 4: like mac Jones situation, I think he's like underfined a
- 1:45:38Speaker 4: lot of the room in the past, even though he
- 1:45:41Speaker 4: has like a mom thod. I just don't really like
- 1:45:43Speaker 4: I feel like he's not a good blue guy. By
- 1:45:47Speaker 4: other comment is I think there's heavily on Drake made
- 1:45:50Speaker 4: his development the sex year dump. So my hypothetical view
- 1:45:53Speaker 4: is to father, see Drake may have like a seventh
- 1:45:58Speaker 4: touchdown in turnover retio or he's down at like twenty
- 1:46:04Speaker 4: four touchdowns and keeps it overs underten O that off there.
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: Yeah, Ryan, that's a great call, because this is uh.
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: I'm curious about your answer to that.
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what.
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: My answer to that is the load load turnover numbers.
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: The nerds they want to tell you turnovers don't matter.
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: Second probably so well that was why. I thought it
- 1:46:23Speaker 2: was a good question because I thought that this is
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: where we're but like you want them to score. Yes,
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: I that's a weird question. It's a good question.
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: It's a weird question because all right, twenty four touchdowns.
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: Does Travian Hunt Henderson punch ten touchdowns in from the
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: one yard line? Right? Like I It's so dependent on
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: the context. Cutting down the turnovers is a big must
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: for Drake May this season. He's a turn He was
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: over turnover per game guy last year. Like that needs
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: to come down. I look at can you get through
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: the season at a turnover per game flat? Like as
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: a maximum? Can you get through the season with that?
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: But you know, if he's like twenty turnovers but he
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: throws close to forty touchdowns, that's pretty good. So it's
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: I mean, it's very But at the same time, let's
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: say he only throws twenty two touchdowns, but there were
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: top five offense in football because they keep getting inside
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: the five and just running the ball in which we
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: know Josh McDaniels likes to do. He probably had a
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: pretty good season even if the stats aren't there. So
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: cutting down the turnovers is important. I don't you know,
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: putting an exact number to the same thing. If it's
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: if he has less interceptions, if it's twenty two touchdowns
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: but ten interceptions, but he fumbles the ball another ten times,
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: versus if it's the seventeen interceptions but that's it and
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: he doesn't fumble. There's so much context missing there, it's
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: tough to answer that question.
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: Okay, so just to pull it up because you know,
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: you knew I was going to go here. So last
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: year Josh Allen had twenty eight touchdowns, a six interceptions,
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: one MVP.
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: The and that's not a lot of touchdowns.
- 1:47:51Speaker 2: Well there's a fake MVP, but but one MVP of
- 1:47:53Speaker 2: the league, fake MVP Joel Joel embid one MVP one time.
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: Oh my god, he did he also well, he also
- 1:47:59Speaker 2: had thirteen rushing touchdowns, saying so he had forty one
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: rushing touchdowns to six interceptions.
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: Forty one total touchdowns.
- 1:48:07Speaker 2: Yeah, sorry, forty one total touchdowns to six interceptions. He
- 1:48:09Speaker 2: fumbled five times, but I don't know if those are
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: all lost, but let's just call it forty one and
- 1:48:14Speaker 2: eleven was his reshie. That's why you win MVP of
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: the league, right, Like those are MVP numbers.
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: Yeah, no, that would be well Lamar had more MVP numbers,
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: but sure, just just he was by default their MVP numbers,
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: he was first or second for the MVP. Can do
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: that great? I think just he's not gonna do I
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: know he's not gonna do that, but I think just
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: putting it on touchdowns interceptions removes a lot of content.
- 1:48:36Speaker 2: So just but just for the sake of the discussion,
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: because I think that this is this is the volatility
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: question that's really being asked. So in twenty twenty three
- 1:48:46Speaker 2: where Josh Allen also had a really good season, but
- 1:48:49Speaker 2: he was twenty nine touchdowns passing touchdowns to eighteen interceptions.
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: Yeah, that's too many.
- 1:48:54Speaker 2: So that that, right there is what I think I
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: could see Drake May doing in the ballpark of like
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: this season, right is a guy that's around thirty total touchdowns,
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: but I don't know if it's gonna be eighteen. But
- 1:49:08Speaker 2: I think the biggest worry that it's not even the
- 1:49:11Speaker 2: nerd stuff, Like obviously there's been a lot of recent studies,
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: you know, just to explain to people what Alex is
- 1:49:17Speaker 2: talking about, Like, there's been a lot of recent studies
- 1:49:19Speaker 2: in nerdom world about turnovers and how backbreaking are they
- 1:49:25Speaker 2: really and how important are they really? Obviously nobody wants
- 1:49:30Speaker 2: to turn the ball over, right like that, don't do that.
- 1:49:33Speaker 2: Nobody wants to turn the ball over.
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: Saying they're okay is very close to wanting it.
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: They're not saying it's okay. They're saying that. The old
- 1:49:42Speaker 2: coach speak is turnovers lose football games. Turnovers are are catastrophe.
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: They do. There's no stat what is it? There's no
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: stat more indicative of wins and losses other besides final
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: score than turnover margin.
- 1:49:58Speaker 2: Except passing EPA, which is a real stat, which is
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: what we're gonna go.
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: Or did the nerds make up that stat because this
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: is what they do. All right, we really like Josh Allen,
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: but he's turning the ball over a lot. Let's pull
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: some formula out of thin air the sizes turnovers. This
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: all started happening with Josh Allen and a couple other
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: quarterbacks too. But like, they wanted to downplay the turnovers
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: so they could say that the guys they liked, so
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: some of them. So they created a formula that downplay
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: turnovers and said, see, look.
- 1:50:28Speaker 2: Some of the things that they looked at. Uh, passing
- 1:50:31Speaker 2: EPA is probably the biggest one. And Ben Johnson has
- 1:50:34Speaker 2: famously said the most important stat other than the scores,
- 1:50:36Speaker 2: passing game EPAU, Passing game EPA is the big one.
- 1:50:40Speaker 2: Explosive plays is the other big one.
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:50:43Speaker 2: It's now been determined that essentially one explosive play a
- 1:50:48Speaker 2: drive is a scoring drive, to is a touchdown drive
- 1:50:51Speaker 2: on on the whole. Uh, you know, in terms of averages.
- 1:50:55Speaker 2: So what I'm getting at where we're all driving at
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: here in terms of all this is is it better
- 1:51:03Speaker 2: to hunt the explosives and hunt the efficiency and not
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: put as much emphasis on protecting the football as it is?
- 1:51:12Speaker 2: You know, the callers point like if Drake May has
- 1:51:15Speaker 2: a season, you know, Josh Allen's second season in the
- 1:51:18Speaker 2: NFL was twenty to nine. It's it's just so you
- 1:51:21Speaker 2: can sit there and say, only threw nine picks. That's
- 1:51:23Speaker 2: really good, but he also didn't have the upward of
- 1:51:26Speaker 2: the ceiling of the eyes.
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: I just think it's so context dependent. What kind of
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: offense do you have, what are you trying to accomplish,
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: what kind of players do you have around you? Like,
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: I don't think there is a definitive answer to that,
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: because there's so many other variables. Here's the way i'd
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: put it. What would be more encouraging to you, Evan,
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: Drake May is and we're going to extremes here, but
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: like you all understand, we're going with this. Yeah, Drake
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: May is a top ten to fifteen quarterback, but the
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: Patriots finished top five in offense. Or Drake May is
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: a top five quarterback, but the Patriots finished top ten
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: to fifteen in scoring offense.
- 1:52:01Speaker 2: So basically justin Herbert, because that's justin Herbert, Like you
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: can aesthetically say, Justin Herbert, it's like a top five
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: quarterback in the league, but maybe last year they crept
- 1:52:11Speaker 2: on but he enough, But that's justin Herbert.
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: Don't use it nerd number here. I'm specifically talking about points,
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: because the idea being if Drake May is getting them
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: into scoring opportunities regularly, even if he's not directly responsible
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: for the scoring play itself, Yeah, that's more encouraging than
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: all right, well, Drake May threw a bunch of touchdowns,
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: but they didn't really have anything going besides that. I
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: have to see how I guess it's tough to because
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: like if it's man, what I'm saying, Yeah, like if
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: it's Mac Jones's rookie season, then I'm not I'm not.
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: I don't want That's kind of what I'm saying.
- 1:52:44Speaker 2: I don't want to turn Drake May into that. And
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: that's my I'm not saying turn him into I'm not
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: saying that's my fear of like overstressing.
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: I'm not saying the approach. I'm not saying necessarily that's
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: the internal approach. Let's just say it falls that way,
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: going the way that they want to go about it.
- 1:52:57Speaker 2: My concern is and I'm not saying this is going
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: to happen, Yeah, I'm just saying, like, my concern with
- 1:53:03Speaker 2: this conversation is that they are going to put kid
- 1:53:07Speaker 2: gloves on him and put him on you know, training wheel.
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: It's not even kid gloves, it's.
- 1:53:12Speaker 2: They are gonna I don't want them to over emphasize
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: you cannot turn the ball over in uh trade for playmaking,
- 1:53:20Speaker 2: Like I'd rather him turn the ball over a little
- 1:53:23Speaker 2: bit more than you would like, but still make the
- 1:53:25Speaker 2: high end plays. But that that, again, is that's not even.
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: Me really my point. I guess, Okay, so in what
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: year is this in twenty This is a bad cop
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: that I'm gonna make.
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: It's Matt Johns's rookie season. Matt John's rooky season. They
- 1:53:40Speaker 2: were a top ten scoring offense, but they weren't an explosive.
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: So it's more like this in twenty sixteen, right, Yeah,
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: and I'm gonna take turnovers out of it because he
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: was insane that year. But like Tom Brady threw twenty
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: eight touchdowns in twenty sixteen, that's as far as Tom
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: Brady goes a relatively pedestrian year, twenty eight touchdowns. They
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: still ran third in offense. Why le Garrett Blunt had
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: eighteen rushing touchdowns, Yeah, because they just got inside the
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: five all the time and hammered a home. That was
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: the year that like James White kept taking screens getting
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: pushed out of bounds at the two yard line. That
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: happened like seven or eight times something if I'm remembering correctly.
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: So like if it's like if Drake May throws twenty
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: touchdowns but they run for another twenty, Drake May played fine.
- 1:54:24Speaker 2: But you have to remember and this is we can
- 1:54:26Speaker 2: move on after this. But like he's a playmaker, Drake
- 1:54:31Speaker 2: May is, He's a playman. I don't need it back.
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: But here's my point, I don't even be a playmaker
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: inside the five. Run the run, the balling.
- 1:54:36Speaker 2: No, I'm not even with him, but I'm just saying,
- 1:54:38Speaker 2: like you can't. He's a gun slinger, he's a playmaker.
- 1:54:42Speaker 2: Like that's the type of quarterback they drafted. They drafted
- 1:54:45Speaker 2: Josh Allen, they didn't draft Tom Brady. So like, if
- 1:54:48Speaker 2: you're gonna get him to the point where he's a
- 1:54:50Speaker 2: winning player like Josh Allen is now, you have to
- 1:54:53Speaker 2: let him make the mistakes because if you try to
- 1:54:56Speaker 2: rein him in and you try to limit, you know,
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: the suppressed the turnovers, that is also going to suppress
- 1:55:03Speaker 2: the playmaks.
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: I just think we're making different arguments. I think they're
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: going to be more run heavy than they've been in
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: the past in the red zone, which is going to
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: impact his passing touchdown number. So I'm not looking at
- 1:55:15Speaker 1: that number as indicative and success, looking.
- 1:55:18Speaker 2: At like the play style of the offense right exactly.
- 1:55:21Speaker 2: I would rather then allow him, like Josh Allen has,
- 1:55:25Speaker 2: like to figure it out as he goes here, to
- 1:55:27Speaker 2: get that turnover number down to the point where in
- 1:55:30Speaker 2: three or four years from now he is playing at
- 1:55:32Speaker 2: an MVP level. Then to try to suppress both, because
- 1:55:36Speaker 2: what they're gonna end up doing is if you say
- 1:55:37Speaker 2: to him, we like, we can't turn the ball over.
- 1:55:41Speaker 2: That's emphasis number one is don't turn the ball over.
- 1:55:44Speaker 2: He's not gonna make that.
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: But you also can't be afraid when there are bad
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: turnovers to do things to correct him.
- 1:55:50Speaker 2: Sure, all right, Uh, Eldred is in North Carolina? What's up?
- 1:55:54Speaker 2: Eldred to horn?
- 1:55:58Speaker 6: But I'm in the parking lot without everybody, and I
- 1:56:00Speaker 6: can't do that. One ain't going down.
- 1:56:02Speaker 2: Now, Okay, question Evan, Yes, sir, I.
- 1:56:07Speaker 6: Man, and I would love to see you and bark
- 1:56:09Speaker 6: go ahad it. And like said, I've been playing Man
- 1:56:12Speaker 6: for about thirty seven years now and I still play
- 1:56:14Speaker 6: it and I'm.
- 1:56:15Speaker 3: Sixty three.
- 1:56:17Speaker 6: Still play Well, Uh yeah, I would try that. And
- 1:56:21Speaker 6: my question is, I'm like everybody else about Matt Hollins,
- 1:56:25Speaker 6: and I'm hopefully that one of the young guys maybe
- 1:56:29Speaker 6: they give jun jobs or shot at it, you know,
- 1:56:32Speaker 6: at the ax. But you keep thinking the is just
- 1:56:35Speaker 6: gonna be a sacrifice dummy, just run down the because
- 1:56:38Speaker 6: I'm pretty sure, uh, he ain't gonna keep doing that,
- 1:56:41Speaker 6: like the like the Brady outfit, he got to throw
- 1:56:43Speaker 6: a deep sometimes because Drake got the Army throw deep too,
- 1:56:46Speaker 6: and I take it off the air. Thanks Eelas, you
- 1:56:48Speaker 6: have a good one.
- 1:56:49Speaker 2: Thanks Elger, Thanks for the call. Yeah, I definitely think
- 1:56:52Speaker 2: that that's say, uh something that you know Drake. Not
- 1:56:56Speaker 2: that Brady was a bad deep all thrower by any means,
- 1:56:58Speaker 2: but that's a strength of Drake that maybe wasn't a
- 1:57:01Speaker 2: strength of Max game as much that with Josh McDaniel's
- 1:57:04Speaker 2: in this offense, Like you want to see more of
- 1:57:06Speaker 2: those down to field drows, no doubt about it. And maybe,
- 1:57:09Speaker 2: uh maybe maybe that X receiver gets a little bit
- 1:57:12Speaker 2: more volume because of that. It's definitely possible. All Right,
- 1:57:15Speaker 2: our last call here, Todd is in Gardner. What's up Todd?
- 1:57:20Speaker 3: Hey, guys, I got just a quick question for you,
- 1:57:22Speaker 3: and I'll give you my answer before I get off
- 1:57:24Speaker 3: there and take it. So, I'm wondering who's gonna mature
- 1:57:28Speaker 3: first into their into what they're going to be, the
- 1:57:30Speaker 3: defense or the offense. And I think it's gonna be
- 1:57:34Speaker 3: the offense because I think Drake. This is Drake May's
- 1:57:37Speaker 3: second year and there. I think with Josh McDaniels can
- 1:57:40Speaker 3: take what he's got and they'll be able to You'll
- 1:57:42Speaker 3: see the offense come into and thrown before the defense,
- 1:57:44Speaker 3: because I think the defense has got a lot of
- 1:57:45Speaker 3: new parts, a whole new identity they're trying to bring in,
- 1:57:49Speaker 3: and these guys haven't played before and it's together, and
- 1:57:52Speaker 3: I I just I don't know. Something just doesn't feel
- 1:57:55Speaker 3: like it's gonna come quickly. I'm not gonna say it's
- 1:57:57Speaker 3: not gonna come. I just feel like it's gonna take
- 1:57:59Speaker 3: more time to get the style of defense that Brabill
- 1:58:02Speaker 3: wants in place. What do you guys think?
- 1:58:04Speaker 2: Thank you, that's a good question, Todd. So historically defense
- 1:58:07Speaker 2: is ahead of offense, right think, just in terms of training,
- 1:58:10Speaker 2: camp and all that kind of stuff. And I do
- 1:58:12Speaker 2: kind of lean a little bit towards defense just because,
- 1:58:16Speaker 2: for one, I still think their talent on the roster
- 1:58:19Speaker 2: is better on defense for now than it is on offense.
- 1:58:21Speaker 2: Until we see some of these rookies play and maybe
- 1:58:24Speaker 2: you know, Campbell and Kyle Williams and Trevon Henderson improve
- 1:58:27Speaker 2: the talent level of the offense beyond what it is now.
- 1:58:30Speaker 2: But until I see that happen. I still think the
- 1:58:33Speaker 2: defense is a little bit more veteran and a little
- 1:58:35Speaker 2: bit more established talent on that side. It's also Rabel's
- 1:58:38Speaker 2: side of the ball, So like, I lean a little
- 1:58:40Speaker 2: bit more towards defense, just because historically that's that's what
- 1:58:43Speaker 2: comes faster to most teams. But with McDaniels, like, it's
- 1:58:47Speaker 2: a big learning curve for a lot of young players.
- 1:58:49Speaker 2: On offense, it's a tough offense to grasp. It's a
- 1:58:52Speaker 2: young quarterback and another system. Your two different system. I
- 1:58:56Speaker 2: could see there being some growing pains on offense.
- 1:58:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I think the defense one has more veteran players,
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: like you said, and also what you know in terms
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: of what they're going to become. I think more of
- 1:59:07Speaker 1: the long term personnel more. The core is built on
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: defense than offense. Yes, you have the quarterback on offense,
- 1:59:12Speaker 1: it's monumentally important. But on defense, you know, Christian Barmore,
- 1:59:17Speaker 1: Keon White's hopefully a part of this obviously, Christian Zalz
- 1:59:20Speaker 1: I know, kind of on the fringe, but you know,
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: Kyle Dugart's not old. He's not young, but he's not old.
- 1:59:24Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:59:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: On offense, you have Drake May, you have Will Campbell,
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: Kyle Williams. I think ideally long term is your wide
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: receiver two, right, I still think they're going to make
- 1:59:32Speaker 1: a big splash at receiver one, if not two. Spots
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: on the offensive line are still going to turn over?
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: Are they committed to Mandre Stevenson long termers? There are
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: another back coming in with Trevon Henderson. What's how long
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: is Hunter Henry's runway? Like, I think the offense is
- 1:59:48Speaker 1: still going to change a lot around Drake, maybe between
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: now and when he gets into his prime at twenty six,
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: twenty seven, twenty eight years old.
- 1:59:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I'd still I feel the same way. Yeah, that's
- 1:59:58Speaker 2: ultimately what it is is defense. I just feel like
- 2:00:01Speaker 2: they have more established players and like an NFL established like, yeah,
- 2:00:05Speaker 2: we know Christian Gonzales, we know Carlton Davis, we know
- 2:00:08Speaker 2: what Milan Williams is, we know what Barmore is when
- 2:00:11Speaker 2: he's healthy. We even know what a guy like Robert
- 2:00:13Speaker 2: Splaine is going to bring, you know, to the defensive
- 2:00:15Speaker 2: side of the ball. Offensively, I still think that you're
- 2:00:18Speaker 2: really hoping that the young talent Drake May, Will Campbell,
- 2:00:23Speaker 2: Kyle Williams, Traveon Henderson, maybe the guys from you know,
- 2:00:27Speaker 2: the twenty twenty four draft, like you're still hoping that
- 2:00:30Speaker 2: that young talent is gonna elevate your ceiling, and it's
- 2:00:33Speaker 2: kind of a little bit of a mystery of that
- 2:00:35Speaker 2: if that's going to happen or not. I don't necessarily
- 2:00:37Speaker 2: feel the exact that really with the defense, like even
- 2:00:41Speaker 2: defensively and we did today with the safeties like Peppers
- 2:00:44Speaker 2: and Kyle Duggar are NFL players, like I don't know
- 2:00:46Speaker 2: if they're great NFL players, are elite NFL players, but
- 2:00:49Speaker 2: we've seen them play at a starting caliber clip in
- 2:00:53Speaker 2: the past. We've never seen Kyle Williams be a starting
- 2:00:55Speaker 2: ex receiver in the NFL. I hope he's a great one,
- 2:00:58Speaker 2: but we've never seen it happen. So that's where that is.
- 2:01:01Speaker 2: It's a good question by Todd there at the end.
- 2:01:04Speaker 2: I'm not gonna you know, there's some Celtics questions in
- 2:01:06Speaker 2: the emails, but I'm gonna let it go because it's
- 2:01:08Speaker 2: two o'clock. We gotta cut it off. But I'm not
- 2:01:12Speaker 2: trading Jalen Brown. There was too many questions, too much
- 2:01:14Speaker 2: of that going on. But we'll be back next week.
- 2:01:17Speaker 2: I think we're getting to an OTA right next week,
- 2:01:20Speaker 2: I don't remember what.
- 2:01:21Speaker 1: Day it's I think Tuesday, Wednesday.
- 2:01:23Speaker 2: Yeah, so hopefully we'll have an ota to talk about.
- 2:01:25Speaker 2: We'll obviously have the schedule officially to discuss as well,
- 2:01:29Speaker 2: and then we'll talk about the schedule plenty tomorrow on
- 2:01:31Speaker 2: Patriots Unfiltered, and Alex will be on the Sports Up
- 2:01:34Speaker 2: I'm sure as well to get schedule takes.
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: So live show tonight starting at seven to fifty.
- 2:01:39Speaker 2: There you go, So we'll have plenty of schedule takes,
- 2:01:41Speaker 2: but today stuck to Mini caamp and the roster reset.

- 2:01:47Speaker 2: the end. I'm glad we were able to get to
