- 3:00Hey, have you got some name? You don't have to tell us?
- 3:02He's here. I'll tell you Lauren. Now we consider right here may ought
- 3:07to be laws against the man like that marrying woman asked a woman stealing now
- 3:12money there are Missus Cedar, he must have found and punched. Continue you
- 3:15understand. We'll do our best. Missus sitter. Hey, I have your
- 3:19attention. Please you people out there on the other side of the wire in
- 3:23the audience room, may I have your attention? Please? Thank you.
- 3:27My name is Corger, Sergeant Pete Corger. I'll explain the lineup. Please.
- 3:30Each of the suspects you will see will be numbered. I'll call off
- 3:32a number the name in charge. If you have any questions or identifications.
- 3:36Please remember the number of sign of the prisoner as I call his name at
- 3:38the end of each line, and I ask for questions of identifications, call
- 3:42off the numbers. If you're sure. And I'm too sure of the suspect,
- 3:45have him held the questions I asked these suspects for me that you get
- 3:49a natural tone of voice. Will not pay too much attention to their answers,
- 3:52as they often lie. All right, bring on the line, even
- 3:57moving boys over here at the end of the stage. That's right right over
- 4:00here. Step it up, turn it all over and face the screen.
- 4:03It's right. Stand still, keep the hands at your side, and the
- 4:06answer my questions sing out. The people on the other side of the screen
- 4:10want to hear you, all right. Number one, James Frank from assault
- 4:13with a deadly weapon. Step right up there, that's it. Where do
- 4:17you live, Jim? Walk up, Jim? Where do you live?
- 4:21I said, Brammer. Where'd you sleep last? Somewhere? Is on the
- 4:27road or I don't know where? To pop your head up, Jim,
- 4:29look at the screen. How long you've been in town? I just got
- 4:32in. Didn't wasting time getting picked up? So I was picked up?
- 4:36I mean weapons? Yeah? What time gone? What kind of gun?
- 4:42Pistol? Thirty two? Cold blue steel and nickelplate? Deal? Where'd you
- 4:46get it? Round? With no one is around? Do you use it?
- 4:53Guys in a hospital? Any critical list? I used it? Why
- 4:59shouldn't the heir out on me? He got all the money, had one
- 5:02miles he bought, that's all he had. Thought he was holding out on
- 5:06me. One lousy bumm. Not even enough for a good hotel room.
- 5:12Oh orry, we'll give you a place to stay, all right. Slide
- 5:15down. Number two, Charles the Professor Grumpton, drunken, disorderly. Step
- 5:19right up, Charlie, I do sound happy tonight, Charlie, why not
- 5:25back up on bread? Today is the thirty ninth time you've been up there,
- 5:29Charlie, and the promised to stay out of trouble the last time.
- 5:31Indeed, I have her. That's not what it says here. No chargers,
- 5:35the bass cut off. That's the Charles grumpt and may have all the
- 5:40caken him by too freely of the great foot orderly he threw out of Joe's
- 5:45bar last night, Charlie, devil's disagreement something the all out of the half.
- 5:49Joe says you tossed an empty beer bottle to his plate last window act.
- 5:56I was really victim superstition. I was that big wow while the jembering
- 6:00would hands the flavor of a beer, I filled some salt exactly. I
- 6:04tossed the picture over my shoulder. I realized too late that the windows badly.
- 6:10The salt back is the bit. How could I pinch him salt break
- 6:14a big window like that? Jerny, obviously, sir, the glass was
- 6:17inferior. Qualis okay? Charlie moved down. I'm the free Harvey Devin thought
- 6:25Frands step thought of step right up the audience face the street. Where do
- 6:29you live? Aby? I ain't talking? Where do you live? I
- 6:33ain't talking? You talk pretty fast at the car dealer? Is what a
- 6:36second? He was? He was the second? How come you wound up
- 6:41here? I ain't talking loudly? Nice? Yeah? Whatever? Letter stops
- 7:00snowing less time letter stop? Oh you sho? W's you tie bid?
- 7:10Hey? Yeah? It's left too well? I get home late. Ship's
- 7:17killing two. I said ten words, let my mind, yeah, Charlotte
- 7:29Evans. May do you think it hurt weather? I guess same kind of
- 7:33night over a year ago, wouldn't January third, nineteen fifty two? Oh,
- 7:40go me in. I wasn't working honn side then. I had nothing
- 7:43much to it. He's a young kid spell a night like this Verdi streets.
- 7:48He's coming home alone. Pounder the next morning, buried in a drip
- 7:54broke. Have they got anywhere with it? No? No witnesses, no
- 7:58motives, nothing, young kid buried in a smooth let's SAT's gorse get them

- 8:37we had address on the heart and what about it? Well, it's just
- 8:39car thirteen K on that missing person's report clopped in at two seventeen am this
- 8:46date named Dorothy Shelton. Twenty one single occasion recorded Missington, seven forty five
- 8:54pm by father Thomas. Want the description that will hold me? Thanks?
- 9:00I want to take a right peet sixty seven to twenty hundred. Yeah,
- 9:05it's a block and a half from where Charlotte Evans was killed. There's thirty
- 9:18two B. Ben just pulled up. Yeah, then at Guthrie, that's
- 9:30right, officer random car thirty two B. You've got an amended flash on
- 9:33that missing person's investigation, so you'd take over, Yeah, a cruise the
- 9:37neighborhood, random, all night restaurants, drug stores, fired out. If
- 9:39anyone's seen the Shelton girl, I'll check with you when we get through here.
- 9:43Right, he's gone? Sure is allows the night? Yeah, yes,
- 9:56mister Shelton, Yes, I wrote, tell A Guthrie, this is

- 10:11Oh yes, of course. Can you thank you? Thank you? Can
- 10:16hear it please? I'm sorry I was so insistent about this, Lieutenant.
- 10:22I know you don't usually do anything for at least twenty four hours, but
- 10:26I know that something's happened to Dorothy. What makes you think so much?
- 10:28Shall I know my daughter? She'd never do anything like this. He's so
- 10:31late and not call or anything. She knows how I worry about her.
- 10:35There's just the two of us to see her. And she's been missing since
- 10:39seven forty five last night. That's right, at least that's the time she
- 10:43left school. Now what school's Atmosphe grew here Art School on Madison Avenue.
- 10:46She goes there on Tuesday and Friday nights. Anyone leave with her? But
- 10:50I asked the school out and they said no. Has that her picture over
- 10:54there on the desk? Yes, yes, that's she, beautiful girl.
- 10:58She is she's a wonderful to anything happens to her. Could we borrow that
- 11:03photograph? Please? Did cause or anything? Is if the only one I
- 11:07had liked it? So he would be careful. Oh, certainly, we'll
- 11:09return it tomorrow. This will have some copies run off. Oh Dorothy,
- 11:13could she be I'll be right back to What do you think? Then?
- 11:18I had to tell her to be routine. Love up there, running away
- 11:20from responsibility happens every day. Yeah, well you don't think so well?
- 11:26Officer rands on him. He wants to talk to you everything. Thanks for
- 11:31shoan. What's up? Right? Enough? Well, i'd better tell you
- 11:37first the Sennant We better flash in, Dorothy Sheldon. Yeah, where two
- 11:43blocks over on Paulson Avenue. She was in the snow the throat cut?
- 11:56Yeah, Oh, come in, Pete, anything new? Ben stopped snowing.
- 12:05That's all just about it. Dorothy Sharton off the Gruya Art School around
- 12:09seven forty five, All right, got on a street Cark Madison Fulton at
- 12:15eight o three, got off at Paulson and the Heart for two blocks from
- 12:18home, Buddy fifty seven. Those times exactly. Mortiment says, they are
- 12:22slow plows has been through a couple of minutes before Carr was traveling on schedule
- 12:26did the monument one. They remembered her by that bright clad scarf she was
- 12:31wearing. She started up the speed alone. That's the last time he went
- 12:35saw into two forty three am. Except the guy who killed him. Yeah.
- 12:39How about that woman who found it there? Nothing there? She's driving
- 12:43home with her husband and a couple of friends. Headlights picked up the body
- 12:46when they turned into driveway. What was them coming? No? No,
- 12:50no, have something to keep me awake? Mind if viker in, gentlemen,
- 12:56make yourself at home. Doc, looks like you're holding awake. Ye.
- 13:03No, thanks, Dorothy Chulky, that's right, And include Doc Gorson
- 13:09among the mourners. Who are you? I knew what was going to happen.
- 13:15That's an interesting statement. What do you mean that? Remember Charlotte Evans?
- 13:18Yeah, same man killed both girls. How do you know? Look,
- 13:22it's a classic example of compulsive homicidal mania. It's all right here.
- 13:30This is practically a book, doctor, What a time for me? Okay?
- 13:33Two crimes virtually identical. The victims a young slight girl, cause of
- 13:37death, a slashed the book circumstances a snowstorm, girl walking home alone at
- 13:41night from the street car, same time, same neighborhood, same lack of
- 13:45obvious moment. All adds up to one thing. You're after, a repetitive,
- 13:50psychopathic chill. A lot of snowstorms are past, You have plenty of
- 13:54young girls out on the streets alone. How come he hasn't hit again before
- 13:56this? Muld have been something still about those two storms. Oh what it
- 14:01is your job to find out? You'd better get that guy given the same
- 14:07condition as a similar circumstance. He's going to kill again. Hi? Then,
- 14:31Hi, how are you doing? Client? You get two squad's busy
- 14:33making the house to house, come up with anything? Yeah, Frost lay
- 14:37Man, that's cool. Nothing got on Dorothy shelf And if they hadn't find
- 14:41on after if that swat you never got off that street cars, somebody must
- 14:43have seen her. Keep checking sure going inside those houses, I get a
- 14:46chance to get warmed. I see you later, claim right for that's a
- 14:54big help. Yeah, I think could come up with anything. Somebody had
- 14:58to see here. I was a guy who killed her. Maybe not well,
- 15:03somebody had to letting this things ride you pretty hard man, Remember what
- 15:07Doc Carson said, sure, how much sleep you had the last four days?
- 15:11How much have you had? Okay, I do. Now, let's
- 15:16stop at this restaurant. Great, great, I can use some coffee.
- 15:26You got to get rid of this one. This will help. He was
- 15:31good in it. Yeah, gives you a uh see. Yeah, what
- 15:39kind of pie you got? The apple? Okay? Hell me too.
- 15:43Coffee all the way around, yep. I guess I didn't have to ask.
- 15:46Not weather like this. You've been doing the land, all the business
- 15:50and coffee making up at the store. Than this was the loneliest place inside
- 15:56of Siberia during that visit. I get the closet. Nobody came in.
- 16:00Huh, brother, it wasn't for the snow plow man coming in. I
- 16:03got a closed it then here and nobody sawnd me for day like that shelfle
- 16:07girl. He how about that? Yeah? What kind of allows of dumb
- 16:12thing like that? Brother? Yeah, you're bad. Nobody saw him?
- 16:18Who could have seen him? Nobody was out in M streets and didn't have
- 16:19to be. I still think somebody would have seen him, not a chance.
- 16:23I was talking to Joe Travis about us. He said, there was
- 16:26nobody on M Street who's Joe Travers. Guy lives around here. He was
- 16:30driving one of the snow clouds that night. They put him on the extra
- 16:33help. You know lives around here, doesn't Yeah, with the Clarage hotel.
- 16:37He says he didn't see nobody out on m streets and he ought to
- 16:40know. Yeah, I guess that's true. Pete, you's true? Oh
- 16:44sure, Oh you didn't finish your bye some row? No, just no
- 16:48hurry, Hi missus, Travis. Oh, let's mee. We're police officers.
- 17:11Could we talk to you for a minute place, sure, come on
- 17:14in. Thanks. Need to work out knocking snipples? Yeah, that's the
- 17:21excuse. How the joints looks have been working out of the weights? Yeah,
- 17:23I can see even chaped that way. Two hours a day really builds
- 17:27a guy. Yeah, yeah, I'll bet. Yeah, I still got
- 17:30ten minutes ago. You mind if I work out while we're talking? No,
- 17:33go right ahead, right, yeah, I do off with it if
- 17:41I get to Hey, a fucking take it to swipe. Oh, nothing
- 17:45like that. Investigating the murder of Dorothy Shelton, Yeah, right about it?
- 17:51Really tough? Ah, pretty good? Huh he's two hundred pounds,
- 17:56thanks, muscle boy. How bad you would driving a snowplow of the night
- 18:00she was killed. Weren't you travers? Yeah? That's right, I don't
- 18:04do it. I want I'm on the extra this. Uh you you covered
- 18:12this neighborhood? Yeah? Do you happen to see Dorothy Shelton? See anybody
- 18:18at all on the streets? A couple of people? Now you know?
- 18:23Oh man, watch man, get down on one knee. Now do you
- 18:30notice anything peculiar about anything? Too busy driver, do you notice anything peculiar
- 18:37about any of them? Now? Watch I straightened up. Press man,
- 18:48notice anything peculiar about any of them? Now? Too busy driving? Anything
- 18:53else? You can tell us about it? Now? Watch I straightening up.
- 19:00I stow my head. That's where we're doing. Huh. We're trying
- 19:06to get some information. Travinh sure told you every thing I knew? Gay
- 19:12Because they committed murderer foot away in that storm, you wouldn't know the difference.
- 19:17I don't think you guys got a chance. We've gotta try. Yeah,
- 19:22stop around again sometime, watch me work out. I mean, in
- 19:26the Mister America contest next summer. How do you think i'd be it's mister
- 19:30America. Huh? It's great. Check out all those number two clock boys.
- 19:45Give me a report by five, got a thick one coming up.
- 19:49If I got the extra list, that'll hold for twenty four hours. Pardon
- 19:53me, you, sail, pintendent's all this? That's me, I would
- 19:56say a gout. Three. Oh yeah, glad to know you got three.
- 20:00Now, let's go to the office. Can't hear yourself? Thank you
- 20:02there by? Sure, that's better. Thanks, Sit down, that's better,
- 20:18Sit down, thanks. Set over the phone. You wanted some dope
- 20:22on our street maintenance. Set up your snowplower operations to what I'm interested in.
- 20:26A couple more hours, you can see it working. There's a dilly
- 20:29of a storm heading our way. Oh, what do you do about the
- 20:33side streets? What the hecks? Nothing? Well, you're clear them,
- 20:36don't you? Jugely? You only have a limited amount of equipment of personnel.
- 20:40Main traffic arteries have to be cleared first. You don't clear the side
- 20:45streets at all. Oh, it's in a while. Depends on how long
- 20:48the storm lasts, how quick we can clean up the main streets. What
- 20:52about the last one. Yeah, we had some details on side streets toward
- 20:56the tail end. What about the neighborhood around Pauls and Hard hard to remember.
- 21:02I don't think so. But let's take a look. Let's see Alson
- 21:12and Hard. Yeah, we did send one unit in there on the last
- 21:18night. Did you ever send any in there before? Yeah? January third,
- 21:22last year, medium rotary plow, same tap of us this year.
- 21:25Well, tell me you any idea who drove it, same man who was
- 21:29on it this year? An extra name of Joe Travis. Communications all setman.
- 21:42Yeah, cap Water's holding an emergency communications all setman. Yeah, cap'n
- 21:48water was holding frequency four. Open course, there'll be a straight to wear
- 21:52radio between the cars. How many cars we used, too? Are some
- 21:56cars three square blocks to cover two cars? Be helped? Even too?
- 22:00Is pretty risky, I guess fine. Yeah, that police woman get here
- 22:10yet, Sergeant Barnes, Yes, she said, I sent her in and
- 22:12Steven gets up. Cointendent Saunders at street maintenance. Right. Well, now
- 22:17she's been doing we'll find out. I think it's gonna work. Got Gorson
- 22:21does think he's worried for it? We have to hello, Lieutenant come in
- 22:26Sargon. No, pe Carter, fine, thanks, listen, how's it
- 22:33been going pretty well? I think you met covers. It wasn't too difficult.
- 22:38I've had the apartment next to his for four days now, Brah,
- 22:42how's he been reacting? Pretty queer? Duck doesn't seem to have much interest
- 22:48in women, and at times I've seen a look in his eyelands. I
- 22:52know how Dorothy's Shelton and Charlotte Evans must have felt. You been taking the
- 22:57same the street car home every night. Ye, that's right. I get
- 23:00off at Paulson Street exactly eight fifty seven travers. Know I've invited him to
- 23:06meet me there. Hasn't taken me up yet, but he knows the time.
- 23:10He's going to take you up, sagiant when tonight. Anything special you
- 23:15want me to do, Just get off the car at the regular time,
- 23:18make sure the streets deserted. If anyone's around fixing broken shoelace or something to
- 23:25my gone, then start walking up Paulson toward the Carriage hotel. We'll handle
- 23:30the rest, okay, anything else, that's it all right, see you
- 23:36late at night and she'll love yeah. Now, here's the diagram of the
- 23:41location. Quin's Carlby here on Parson, halfway between the car line and the
- 23:48hotel. The kind of like I saw a thumb one. Oh it's it's
- 23:52buried in a drift and looks like a park job, caught by the stone.
- 23:55What about mobility, we had a that we park here. On the
- 24:00next plot, quid keeps us posting, travers makes us move, We make
- 24:03ours sounds okay, you better be you got three saunas within it. I
- 24:11assigned the medium rotary to the pulse in Hartford area travers driving. How do
- 24:15you take the assignment? Jumped at it? That's suspicious, no reason to
- 24:18be. Fifth night of the storm, main artery is cleared, same conditions
- 24:21as last time. Yeah, well, thanks for the assists on this.
- 24:23I get it. Just let me know how you make up. I'll say,
- 24:26Yeah, what's time we get there? Eight thirty? It's only five
- 24:30now, Yeah, it's it'll be a long three and a half hours,
- 24:44really getting cold. Yeah, storm is not letting it any the most time,
- 24:52isn't it? Eight fifty five? Couple more minutes the street cars outside,
- 25:02Carl wondering about Travis. Yeah, it's going to be around by now.
- 25:10Might be a couple of blocks over storing like this, even if PLoud
- 25:14doesn't moved too fair, I guess yeah, tough, having to do it
- 25:19this way, no other way, No evidence gone, got any sign of
- 25:29that snow pile? Nothing you yet? How's the street empty? Has been
- 25:36for a half hour? Any pretty close? Now? Is they? Fifty
- 25:40six? I think Travers is dumping off? I doubt it. He's probably
- 25:44better up. Yeah, flow is coming down the street. He's coming down
- 25:47the street now, Quin where he's heading? Probably go around the block.
- 25:51The pulse who come up behind him give us the working time. I'll have
- 25:55to. I'm snowed in tight and get out of here with a blow such
- 25:56you'll have to handle it. We will. He comes. Yeah, it
- 26:02was funnest anybody chances when he pass them back at his holly can he stopped
- 26:06to pass it? What do you think? All right? It's so probably
- 26:15not he's got things on his mind. Yeah, did you recognize him?
- 26:18No, Stum's too heavy. It's him, though, has to be.
- 26:22What's the time. It's twenty seconds past eight fifty seven? Where's that street
- 26:26car? We'll get there, hey, Ben? Yeah, Quine a street
- 26:34car stopping at the corner. Doesn't look like anyone's getting off though, what's
- 26:37that means? Just stopping me? Ben? Can't see what's going on from
- 26:41here? Oh wait, somebody's getting off now. Can you tell him it's
- 26:45Barnes that from here looks like a woman though walking this way along? Yeah,
- 26:49yeah, it's a woman. Must be Barnes to start. Yeah,
- 26:52sure, what about the snow cloud? I'll sign of it, Jeff.
- 26:56She's walking pretty slow, giving him plenty of time to make it. What's
- 27:00with that day? I don't know. If she don't catch we'll keep it
- 27:02going. He's almost at the first corner, Ben, Still no sign?
- 27:04Oh yeah, yeah, there's a plow coming off. The car tracks are
- 27:07turning up the fall. Snap right, you better get dark. Come on,
- 27:10pee cross the street. It won't be long now, looks from here
- 27:14at that up turn in the middle of the block. But what's role with
- 27:15its? Mom? I hope you're a mob But Ben, plot, there's
- 27:19only a couple of yards behind it now like that? My hands on craignant
- 27:22that the flo tying. They got a free man. I've gotta got piece.
- 27:26I'll try to hang on. Come on, Benny, he's moving up
- 27:30the doors, starting a run. There he is got a ninth fan.
- 27:45Why are they going to do? Comfort? It's pretty thin than Julieutenant,
- 27:57that's psycho. You're okay, sure, but let's get out of this still.
- 28:02I'm not helping your cold any Hey, I have your attention. Please,
- 28:26you people out there on the other side of the wire in the audience
- 28:29room, may I have your attention? Please? Thank you. My name
- 28:33is Conger Sergeant Pete Corger. I'll explain the lineup to you. Each of
- 28:37the suspects you will see will be numbered. I'll call off a number the
- 28:40name in charge. Do you have any questions identifications? Please remember the number
- 28:42of side of the prisoners. I call his name the end of each line.
- 28:45When I ask for questions to identifications, call out the number if you're
- 28:49sure. You're not too sure. The suspects have him held the officers who
- 28:53took your name, and that says to you they're seated among you. Please
- 28:56be prompt with your questions to identifications. When the prisoners leave there the sense
- 29:00of the washroom address back into the jail clothes. It makes it quite difficult
- 29:03to bring them back after they leave it. The questions I asked these suspects
- 29:07are able to get a natural tonal voice, why not saying too much attention
- 29:10to their welcome back. Rehearsals are always somewhat interesting to listen to as you
- 29:45you hear the actors kind of work on their parts and get everything up to
- 29:49snuff. But I don't have to say this is one that I really and
- 29:55truly wish we're available in the full dramatic uh uh dramatic form because I think
- 30:04you I think it, you know, was a very interesting story, and
- 30:12I think the music would have made it even better because it definitely provides this
- 30:18sense of tension. And even without that though it was, it was a
- 30:25very uh well plotted mystery. Uh you know. I think in the second
- 30:30half really did get to the point of how we're going to catch this guy,
- 30:33because you know, when you do this in the snow, with the
- 30:37big advantage for the killer is how much physical evidence is destroyed, plus the
- 30:42lack of witnesses. Now to listener comments and feedback, I have a couple
- 30:47of quick ones from podcast Alley. A great podcast, says Carrie, and
- 30:53r STG says one of the best old time radio programs offered. Adam does
